Being someone with poor observation skills does not work out well for an adventurer. Often things catch one by surprise, even obvious things. Sometimes even the smell of rain on the air don't register for those of low perception. So, while the two adults in the group seem to have noticed something off kilter, Astrid continues to march forward through the fields with some combination of fearlessness, stupidity, or reckless abandon. A streak of lightning splits the sky and thunder rumbles around them. Finally, Astrid notices, pulled out of her chatty reverie by the sudden crackle. She takes cover beside the caravan, which continues to march forward with the BlixtbotsTM guiding it.
"Ooh, Avasha's really gassy today, huh?" she jokes, looking back towards Some Guy and Leni-Aura. They both seem a bit perturbed at something, but these are the Lightning Fields. It'd be silly not to expect some lightning. The sky seems to settle, so Astrid steps away from the cart and looks up at the cloud covered sky. It's a nice color, an interesting stormy gray. She decides she likes it and continues to march ahead. "C'mon, slowpokes! We've got a lotta ground ta cover!"
Another rumble of thunder rolls across the fields and smaller flashes of light speckle the clouds overhead. Still, she carries on. At this point, no one is listening to her, but the fields are wide open around them, and there's no movement on the horizon from creatures or people, so she doesn't worry. However, she doesn't notice the BlixtbotsTM speaking to each other in a series of beeps and clicks. The cart comes to a stop, and Astrid does not.
"What're ya stoppin' fer?" she asks, walking right past them but looking in their direction.
The most forward bot speaks up. "Conscript Astrid, report: There is high likelihood of a lightning strike in this area. Proceed with caution."
"Ah, I'm not worried. Miss Veliky's wantin' ta test how ya perform in a lightnin' storm anyway," she says. The bots still do not proceed forward. "Come on, nothin's gonna-"
Suddenly bright blue-white light bathes the area. It erases even shadows for a split second. A massive clap of thunder erupts and shakes the ground. When it clears, Astrid lies on the ground, smouldering, and surrounded by lightning shaped burn marks in the dirt.
Avasha must have tired of her incessant talking.

“No.” she agrees, ears turning back as she walks alongside Ulrich. “The air feels heavy… But I cannot place it.” She takes a slow breath, scanning the horizon with a mild look of concern; after a moment, her eyes return to him.
He gestures towards the child— and she narrows her eyes briefly at him— before quietly turning her head and following his motion back towards Astrid. “Gassy? What do you mean? She is the sky.” She slows her pace closer to the girl again, only rolling her eyes upon her eager hurrying. “We are on foot, hurrying will not carry us much faster than our current pace.” she remarks— however… Suddenly, Veliky’s escorts stop.
Leni-Aura furrows her brows at them, walking past them after Astrid, but turning her head enough to keep her eyes on them while they chirp and beep at one another. “Astrid?” she remarks over her shoulder; one of the bots steps up, making a mechanical report. Leni-Aura slows her steps, ears perking, then flattening back as she continues after the girl. “Astrid, we should stop for a moment until the storm pass—”
Nimbus suddenly lifts his head.
The earth quakes. Light fills Leni-Aura’s vision, and for a brief moment, her paws leave the ground.
CRACK!
The force of the lightning strike slams Leni-Aura back into one of the bots, toppling both of them over. She hears whirring, chirping, and buzzing while she lays atop it in a daze, Nimbus cradled tightly in her arms. The drake squirms and chirps, wriggling out of her arms to bounce sporadically around in the dirt. “Sto aul na w’old…” (What in the…) Leni-Aura rises, shaking her head as she turns to see…
Astrid, sprawled out in the dirt.
“Jae mitchin! Go’ faa yeh? Astrid?” (Oh gods! Are you okay? Astrid?) Leni-Aura trips over herself, scooping up her panicked drake as she sprints to the girl, lying in the midst of a flurry of scalded lightning imprints. “Astrid??”

Ulrich watched as Leni took to his suggestion of staying close with Astrid. Who knows what immediate danger lied ahead? Surely, none of them knew what it was! Then he observes the bots stopping in their tracks, beeping and chirping to one another. He halts his steps now as well. Narrowing his eyes, he listens for any danger that may be descending upon them.
He had been wrong though.
Instead of listening he should have been feeling— and in the question of danger potentially descending upon them, it was quite literal.
In one instant, Astrid had been charging forward, and in the next, a crackling of electricity and flash of light!
Ulrich had managed to anticipate the coming lightning strike due to the static charge in the air causing his hair to raise. After the blinding light had subsided, he was nowhere to be seen. Then all of a sudden— if anyone had been paying attention— the top half of his head peered over a large rock. His wide eyes showing clear worry for the unconscious child.
"Oh boy... Now why the hell would you go and do that to the poor girl, Avasha?"
Leni had rushed up to the girl desperately trying to make sure that Astrid was alive. Of course, no normal being would be okay after a vicious lightning strike like that! Luckily for them, Ulrich learned something from a healer years ago.
In Leni's panic, she didn't hear some guy walking up from behind. He was calmly rubbing his hands together. As he did so, small sparks of electricity started to dance around his hands. His closes his fists leaving the pointer fingers out. All that his apprentice would notice was his shadow looming over her and Astrid. Before Leni would be able to look up towards him, she would see his fingers make contact on Astrid's chest and the opposite side of her ribs. The child's chest would jump out at them as the electricity ran through her.
He was attempting to resuscitate the girl via lightning magic. Of course, this might have been too sudden an act. A shocking flurry of verbal abuse might ensue. A punch to the face, probably?
Hopefully, what he was doing would work.

Surprisingly enough, Astrid was breathing still despite the system shock she received. Much of her body has charred marks, but her greaves remain surprisingly unfazed, having absorbed the brunt of the bolt. It was still an extreme jolt, enough to knock her out.
Then Ulrich approaches and calmly reaches past the panicking Leni to defibrillate the girl. With the healing shock, her eyes dart open. "OUCH!" she yelps, suddenly stirring awake and falling out of Leni's arms to the ground. "That smarts!" Astrid winces, shakily pushing herself up to remove her face from the dirt. She manages to sit up with a little help, and she blinks, trying to process what the heck just happened. One moment she was fine, the next she's on the ground. Leni looks freaked out, Some Guy has a surprisingly intimidating expression, (the classic anime glasses glare) and she is hurting quite a lot.
"Wh...What happened?" she asks. Little bits of electricity spark off of her armored bits and between her horns. Some of her hair is singed, and with a great amount of concern, she looks at the ends of her bangs. "Did a dragon show up?! Did I miss the coolest part of the adventure?!" Somehow she's on her feet. The idea of missing something awesome is more painful than her actual pain. Her head whips around looking to the skies for the beast descending upon them. Even the lightning storm seems to have settled for now. "NOOOOOO! I wanna fight a dragon!" She does not need to fight a dragon.

Dust skirts and clouds around Leni-Aura’s paws when she skids to a stop near Astrid; she can still taste the copper in the air, and feel the heat in the earth even as she crouches down next to the young girl, and for just a brief moment, the past overlaps with the present. Astrid’s form flickers behind her eyes, her armoured silhouette replaced by someone smaller and more fragile coiled against the charred earth.
She blinks, and it’s Astrid who lies in her arms— unresponsive, charred by the lightning— but breathing. Leni-Aura swallows thickly, lying in the burned dirt next to the child, when a shadow passes over them— and she recognizes the magic as it’s transferred into her. Astrid’s chest jumps. It doesn’t make sense to her, though; she’s never seen anyone treat Avasha’s wrath with a second dose of it. So, instinctually, Leni-Aura lashes out in an attempt to slap Ulrich across the wrists, barking in a frightened tone of halfling, “Sto na ‘ell!? (What the hell!?) You want to kill her again!?”
Just as the words leave her lips, they die again. Astrid’s yelp fills the air and her weight leaves her arms. Leni-Aura stands quickly, startled, and moves to help the child into a sitting position when she realizes that Astrid is moving. “Astrid?” she prompts, ears lowering slightly— but then, she’s up on her feet in a heartbeat, yelling about a dragon that does not exist.. She feels her heartbeat drumming in her chest, somehow more startled by the chain of events than Ulrich and Astrid put together. Her complexion is pallid, expression grim while she studies Astrid’s movements. “No… there was no dragon. Avasha struck you down.” she objects, placing a hand over her heart in a bid to find some kind of center for her anxiety.
How many of her own has she seen struck by Avasha’s wrath in her years with the warren?
She was certain she would see it yet again.
She takes a breath, brows furrowing while she re-channels her myriad of emotions into a more scolding tone. “You nearly died and you are worried about a dragon? You’re lucky to still be able to move about; even now, you’re still electrified!” She gestures widely at the girl as electricity sparks off her armour. “Look at you!”

His calm expression is broken a bit as Leni lashes out at him for his antics. Her exact reaction was to be expected. It's not every day that you witness someone in your party get zapped by the gods, only to be zapped again right after! Just a few moments later, to both of their surprise, Astrid yelps and falls out of Leni's arms.
Ulrich's eyes flash back and forth between Leni and Astrid as she voices her disappointment in not having been able witness and fight the imaginary dragon that just flew in. His hands are still held out in front of him, electricity crackling between his fingers. He gives a small nervous chuckle before shaking his hands to disperse the magic gathered within them.
"There was no dragon, Astrid. As Leni-Aura said, you were struck by Avasha herself."
Leni mentions that the girl is lucky to even be moving about still, which he wholeheartedly agrees with. Then the fact that Astrid is still electrified is brought up. One of Ulrich's eyebrows raises and he brings one of his hands up to rub his chin in contemplation. Had Avasha meant to end the poor child or was this something else?
His gaze travels to the skies above, and the only thing the other two can hear from him is, "Hmm."

"Aye, I'm disappointed there weren't no dragon!" Astrid huffs. That would have been super cool! Though absolutely out of her league. "What happened then??" So the adults explain.
Struck by lightning? Look at her? Astrid looks down at herself, still sparking with tiny arcs of electricity. Look at her! She wondered what that buzz at the ends of her fingertips was. Now, it's evident. Astrid's hands whip out in front of her, and she watches the bits of lightning travel down her arms. One particularly stubborn arc keeps pace between her horns. Her hair is, of course, on the fritz.
"Whoa!" she exclaims, looking at Leni and Ulrich. Blue light crackles in her eyes, unnoticed by herself. Her head tilts. "Avasha struck me down?" she asks, then she turns her head up towards the overcast sky for a long moment. Her hands fall to her sides while she ponders. "Well, why'd she go and do that, huh?" Again, she turns her head up to the sky and raises a sparking fist, shaking it. "Oi, Miss Avasha, is it 'cause I said ya were gassy?? It was just a joke, ya know! A turn o' phrase! Ever heard of one??" One arc actually gives her a bit of a shock, a loud snap in the air. "Ow! What gives?!" She shakes her hand out.
There's a hanging pause in the air. Things have fallen surprisingly still. What now?

Leni-Aura’s shoulders drop, her expression growing further exasperated when she hears the ”Hmm,” resounding from some guy’s direction. “ Explain.” she says simply, ears lowering slightly as she tilts her head to look at him. “ You cannot do that and then not explain.” Does he try to be this vague on purpose? She looks back at Astrid, brows furrowed slightly as the girl prattles; her eyes crackle with webs of blue, and… oh; something clicks in her head.
She thinks she understands Ulrich’s hum of consideration, now. ... annoying. Why does he always have to be right about these things? She rolls her eyes, distantly listening to the rambling of the child beneath a sigh. “Astrid,” she tries to say, her voice low in warning— but Astrid is already shaking her fist up at Avasha. “Do not challenge the god of storms in her own domain. She—” Electricity crackles with a loud snap, causing Leni-Aura to jerk back a step. She perks her ears, hackles rising with the static in the air. The atmosphere suddenly draws thick in the silence— it feels similar to when the lightning struck, but still... different, all the same.
Leni-Aura turns her head, feeling a tingle in the pads of her paws; Nimbus suddenly perks up, tail lifted high and eyes wide as he looks towards the caravan. He lets out a small squeak from where he's standing.
Leni-Aura frowns, turning sharply to face the caravan, to see… .... wait, what is that? She locks eyes with it; the creature seems to be pulsating static electricity, big blue eyes staring back at the three.
It’s… almost cute. Snake-like with multiple legs, and tiny horns that are too big for it's stupid triangular head— but Leni-Aura knows what that thing is, and that thing is not a good sign.
The fact that it is a baby, with an adult nowhere in sight, is also not a good sign.

Ulrich does not have time to explain his thoughts to Leni-Aura though. Before he even has to time to think about how to word his thoughts out to her, a squeak from the young drake catches his attention. His gaze quickly shifts from Leni and Astrid, to Nimbus, then finally back towards the caravan.
What is that?
Out of the corner of his eye he can see that Leni is familiar with the creature— or at the very least, seems to be familiar with it.
He can't seem to put his finger on it. Had he encountered a creature like that before on his travels? Were there any notes on this creature in his sketchbook? Ah, blast it! He'd look like an idiot reaching for his sketchbook right now! All he could do was stare back at it, but then something dawned on him. Was that a juvenile? Do they all grow to that size or do they grow bigger than that? If that's a juvenile then that means...
"I'm not even sure if I've even come across a creature of this kind before." He says as he keeps his gaze trained upon it. "I'm assuming that you're familiar with this creature then, Leni-Aura?"
He's flexing his fingers attempting to ready himself in case even more trouble comes their way. Lightning magic, though, would be out of the question. They were currently in the Lightning Fields, where everything has a resistance to lightning! No, if they were to deal with any problems now, he'd have to do it the old fashioned way...
Just some guy and good old fashioned fisticuffs.

Still shaking her hand out, Astrid looks around and notices Leni and Ulrich both staring at something hanging around the cart. It's small and almost slimy looking and a deep, dark, stormy blue. Oh, it's cute. It's super cute! It's got like twelve legs and two little horns, and it's adorable! What is it? She has no idea. "Ohhhhh! Look at it!" Astrid squeals, rushing over to get a better look at it. Its tiny mouth opens and clicks and croaks like a frog, shuffling its feet back to hide behind the cart. The creature, which is about the size of a small dog, presses itself into a corner of the cart to avoid Astrid's grubby hands. Sparks of electricity bite at Astrid's fingers (not that they weren't already, as she's still got arcs flowing along her body occasionally).
The BlixtbotsTM, at this point, have started moving forward again. They assessed the situation with Astrid from afar, determined she was unharmed, and now lurch the cart forward. When it moves and unblocks the view for the group, small bits of movement can be seen on a distant hill. Tiny, dark masses move down the hill, swaying and zig-zagging as they move like strange, fingernail-sized snakes in the distance.
Astrid pulls her hands away from the weird twelve-legged salamander and looks at the worms moving on the hill. Squinting her eyes at the movement on the hill. Thunder rumbles around them, and once it settles, the croaks of the creatures can be heard en masse. Oh, oh, that's like a couple dozen of whatever this thing is. Oh, that can't be good. It's a tiny stampede!

Leni-Aura’s ears tilt back. “ My warren calls them Ele’vite.” she answers Ulrich’s question without much fuss, a frown on her face. “ Orym calls it Behir…” Her voice is flat— but serious nonetheless. “ They are like the lightning of the land; fast, electric predators. This one is still a child, but… Astrid! What are you doing!?” The serious tone of her voice twists into something more quizzical when Astrid suddenly rushes over to the baby Behir. Leni-Aura stomps a hind paw. “ Don’t touch it, it’s electrified!” she calls after the girl, looking exasperated as she takes a step towards Astrid, but… something more concerning than the girl and the multi-legged snake catch her eye. She stops, turning her eyes away from where Astrid is pawing at the baby Behir. A bunch of squiggles on a hill could be seen far past them as the cart lurches forwards… and a sudden look of shock crosses Leni-Aura’s face when she realizes that they are… “ What is the season?” she remarks, her voice flat despite it being a question. “ It is the leaf-fall outside of the Cradle, and so…” she trails off, quiet for a moment; then, her eyes widen when she makes some connection. “ Atcoahtam!” The Rabbitaur goes rigid; there are few times Leni-Aura truly looks panicked, but the look she offers Ulrich holds a mild terror at her realization. “ It is Atcoahtam in the Cradle— they have just hatched by the droves and they’re hungry— you understand, yes? They’re looking for food. The mother will surely be following behind.” She turns back to the cart, “ Astrid! Get on the cart and stay on the cart! Nimbus, alet!” (Nimbus, come!) The tiny drake squeaks from where it is; crawling towards her while she bolts to him to pick him up. Nimbus goes without complaint. “We need high ground. They swarm.” she chides as she passes Ulrich— leaping up onto the cart with ease— she looks out towards the squiggles, growing larger by the moment.
Jolts of electricity shudder between each of them, becoming more visible as the tiny stampede of hungry babies approaches.

Ulrich follows her gaze to the hill in the distance. A bunch of squiggles make their way over the hill in their direction. He watches as Leni realizes the terror that is making it's way right for them. She gives him a look of shock, which also shakes him because it's not every day that Leni shows a face like that!
"The Mother?! There's an even bigger one trailing after them?" he asks as Leni bolts past him with Nimbus cradled in her arms.
She leaps onto the cart with ease and he follows suit. He hops up onto the cart, looking back toward the squiggly stampede as they close the distance between them and the party.
"We're not exactly the fastest moving thing out here. Especially with all of us on this thing!"
The squiggles are getting closer and the cart can't move any faster. They'd be swarming around their little escort party in no time! He spares another glance at the three beside him before getting that look in his eye. He was probably going to decide to do something very stupid and dangerous, but that's just the way it goes for Ulrich in these types of situations.
"What about a distraction? Would one be able to grab their attention and drive them off someplace else?"
These little creatures might be lightning resistant, but so was he.

The adults are suddenly, and Astrid does not understand why. The little thing... He's just a little guy. She just wants to pet it. Then Leni's on the cart talking about them swarming. "They're small though," Astrid protests. "They can't be that much of a problem. Maybe just a few nips at yer ankles, right?" The small one on the cart disappears from her vision, and she assumes it fled from her and back to its clutch.
However, hearing about a mama monster... Yeah, okay, that can be a big problem, especially if it's big. Maybe they should move. What if the lightning bolt came from a creature of the fields and not actually Avasha? Yeah, that could be bad. Especially if two seasoned adventurers are freaking out about it.
"O-Oh, um, okay, BlixtbotsTM! On the cart! We gotta get movin' fast!" she says quickly. "Protectin' the cargo's our priority!"
One of the bots speaks up, turning to look at them with little to no sense of urgency. "Conscript Astrid, analysis: If all units ride on the cart, our top speed will not exceed current speeds. Report: These units will remain on the ground. Mistress Veliky entrusted Astrid et al with protecting the cargo and these units. Analysis: Failure to accomplish your mission will yield catastrophic results."
That was just the boost of confidence she needed! Wow, so helpful, BlixtbotsTM!
"Guess we're fightin' whatever's runnin' down that hill!" she huffs, hopping back off the cart and grabbing her hammer. Though, she could push the cart and help it go faster. She's got greaves, so she can at least avoid ankle nips.

“ Only one or two, yes— a few nips— but they hatch by the tens and hunt in a pack.” Leni-Aura puffs back, “ That is a hundred ‘nips at yer ankles’.” She even repeats Astrid’s accent back at her, even though it’s more of a bastardization of an accent, with the inclusion of her natural halfling accent muddling it. She turns her eyes to Ulrich. “ Of course there is a mother,” she answers, careful as she balances herself on the cart; she releases Nimbus enough to let the little reptilian swirl up her arm and come to a nervous rest on her shoulders. He makes a squeaking sound at Ulrich from his perch. “ She is protective. She will be close by.” She looks towards the Blixtbots™ as they respond to Astrid, before looking back at Ulrich with a frown. “It is better than being swarmed right away.” she responds, pulling her spear from its sheath with a quiet inhale; the little squiggles are getting closer, and she can better make out their size. They’re all about the same size as the one that was on the cart, which means they’re… what, maybe a few weeks old if they aren’t big enough to hunt by themselves?
She's seen these things chew up livestock from the bottom up; generally, her warren's advice is simply to run from the little bastards, but... they are protecting cargo. “They are hungry, of course they could—” Leni-Aura’s focused expression suddenly swaps to one of irritation when she turns to face him, apparently having had a realization. He’s got that stupid look in his eyes. “ How much do you value your legs?” she asks, eyes narrowing slightly— but she’s distracted by Astrid hopping off the cart. She perks up, spinning around to redirect her attention. “ Astrid, you do not want to get swarmed by those.” she objects, throwing her gaze towards the growing hoard of Behir. She hops across the cart, balancing expertly on the cargo. “ At least try to put some distance between us and them, before—” She winces as lightning splits the sky, and further behind the squiggles of little Behir, crawls something much larger. Multiple legs drive it forward over the line of the horizon— a massive serpent in comparison to the blips of small, little guys stampeding hurriedly towards the cart. Leni-Aura bristles slightly. There she is. Almost as though the mother Behir senses their presence, the slithering behemoth rises up from a distance; it looks directly towards the cart before dropping onto its front legs with a screech that can be carried over the fields like thunder. It disappears behind a dip in the horizon, tail undulating as its many legs carry it after the children. Leni-Aura winces slightly; the mother knows they’re here, which means even trying to escape the little ones with a height advantage to bat them away will do no good in the end. “...we may be forced to fight them off.” she admits, ears lowering slightly. “Their mother will be angry if we do, but if we....”
Leni-Aura's ears flick back when she trails off, eyes tilting towards Nimbus on her shoulder, before looking back uncertainly at the stampede of week-old hatchlings. A time ago, she wouldn't have much of an issue with this, but... she feels uneasy for a reason she isn't sure how to explain. "You wanted to lead them away? How?" She turns to the man hesitantly, regarding his previous question on distraction, while occasionally throwing glances in Astrid's direction to ensure she hasn't just run off yet.

A look of concern washed over his face as Astrid jumps off of the cart ready for a fight. Goodness, does nothing frighten this girl?! He had to give her credit though. At least she wasn't panicking in this situation. The average adventurer would be panicking right now resulting in them getting swarmed by the little critters.
Then Ulrich watches in horror as the mother, an giant compared to the little squiggles, appeared in the distance accompanying her young. It gives a horrifying screech as it falls onto it's front legs.
"You have got to be kidding me..." he says, eyes wide.
The mother disappears behind a dip in the horizon heading straight for them. That's not good... That's not good at all.
He looks to Leni as she poses the question. His expression was serious with a hint of worry in his eyes, but the worry faded quickly.
How was he planning to lead them away?
"Well, to answer your earlier question. I do value my legs quite a bit. They're quite useful for a lot of things..." The serious frown turns into a goofy grin, and he gives her a wink, "...but I do not plan on losing them today."
Just then a gentle wind passes through, and Ulrich looks to be stepping up into the air with it.1
"I'm sure these creatures would like a bit of fun chasing their food. Someone has to be the bait!"
The plan was to entice the mother— who was the biggest threat in this case— to chase him, leading her away from the team. That would at least give them a fighting chance if some of the other newly born Behirs decided to pull through with their attack on the cart. The only concern of his was that these creatures were resistant to lightning magic... That would present quite a problem. This was definitely going to need a bit more than just plain old fisticuffs.
