New Member Guide
Welcome new adventurers and returning veterans! All adventurers need a starting point, and this is yours. Below is a guide specifically designed for new users to help you get comfortable with how the forum works, what Charon is, and the steps to diving into our fantastical world!
What is Tales of Charon?
Tales of Charon is a forum, text-based collaborative roleplaying experience that is constantly evolving and growing thanks to the support of our amazingly friendly and creative community. Tales of Charon has been going strong for over two years now and we have no intentions of stopping.
So, what makes Tales of Charon unique compared to other forum or play by post TTRPG games?
Tales of Charon focuses on collaborative storytelling. While we have systems with game mechanics, what we're mainly about is roleplaying and working together to explore the amazing journeys characters embark on across the fantasy world. Outcomes of events are not left up to random dice rolls and how charismatic or smart your character is isn't determined by a number.
Roleplay on your own time at your own pace
Unlike your typical TTRPG, there is no set sessions or schedule you have to adhere to. You can take on as few or as many threads as you are comfortable managing and write when you have the time to spare.
Customize your character
Our system is highly flexible, allowing you to play almost anything you can think of so long as it fits within the world's setting. Create unique combinations of Skills, Abilities, and Items to compliment your character's personality, history, and role within the world. Pick and choose from a growing library of interesting spells, Prestige Classes, and more to arm your character and expand your creative options.
Tell your stories your way
Choose to share your character's journey with others, develop in-character friendships, rivalries, and more. Embark on your own narratives without needing a Game Master at the lead or complete quests with writing prompts and challenges to earn rewards. Collaborate with other players to create amazing stories and share those stories with a community of fellow creatives.
Take action to shape the world
Work your way up the social ladder in our Renown System to gain access to higher tiered quests and crafting, or influence the stability of the regions of Charon by participating in our Political System. Join your fellow elites in Charon's Guilds to unlock unique abilities, quests, and subclasses. Band together with your fellow players and rise to the challenge of conquering our World Plot Events including staff-run dungeons and raids to unlock new rewards, world lore, and more.
Become part of a creative community
We are continually blown away by just how welcoming, talented, respectful, and kind our Discord community is. We take pride in maintaining a safe space for community members across the world. Whether you're a veteran to forums and roleplaying, or you're just getting started, we welcome you to tell stories with us.
How roleplaying works
As mentioned above, roleplaying is text-based and works like a forum. A forum is a collection of threads and threads contain a chain of replies focused on a topic. These topics can be determined by the players in the thread or be based around a quest prompt.
Once a thread is started participants in the thread take turns writing and posting their replies, going back and forth, interacting and responding to each other until reaching a conclusion to the story. You can have multiple threads ongoing at one time, and there is no limit on how long a thread can be.
Each thread marks something your character has experienced in the world. These experiences can lead to your character changing and adapting, making them feel more dynamic the more you explore how they interact with other characters and the world as a whole.
Before you begin...
Now that you have a basic understanding of what we are, you may be feeling pretty eager to jump right in. Before you get into creating a character and roleplaying, there's some information you need to read first and foremost.
Site Guide
If you are unfamiliar to Proboards or forum based roleplay, it may be confusing to navigate the site at first. The following guide will work from the top of the site down explaining where to find what on all the sections that are visible regardless of what page you are on in the forum.
Depending on what page of the site you are currently on, the middle section of the site will look different. The Home page will display collections of sub boards as yet another way to navigate the site.
Proboards forums are made up of a collection of sub boards which have other sub boards and/or threads inside of them. Everything that you do in Charon is done by creating and replying within threads in these various sub boards.
Getting Started
The following section talks about creating your account, switching between profiles, and the various profile features and settings.
Profile Features
It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with your profile and its features to make your roleplaying experience on the forum easier. Each character you create must have their own profile attached to your forum account.
Now that you have read our Community Guidelines, created your account, and have your first character profile started, you can move onto our Character Creation Guide. This guide will walk you through the steps of completing your first character so you can start roleplaying right away!
