At the southern end of Dragon's Spine far below the elevated village of Skypeak, sits a base camp for travelers to stop during their journey. An encampment of mostly tents, carts, and a few permanent structures, it makes for a good pit stop before people make their way up the mountain to Skypeak or east to Stormgale. A few tall metal structures surrounded by wide-radius fences are scattered around the base camp, a protection against the thunderstorms that sometimes stretch into this area. Astrid has been to this camp before. From here, she rode in the back of a covered cart and first made her way up to Skypeak Village in search of her mother. She's not quite given up her search on that front, but this was the real last place she saw the dwarven woman, so she can't help doing a few glances around to see if she can't find her this time around. She almost wonders if they originally passed through her from Frost Gale. After all, there's a large dwarven population in Bleakfort from what she learned from the bushy-beared dwarf Jonesy in Moonglade. She hopes he made it to Bleakfort safely. For now, she's been given a task from Miss Veliky: escort a group of Type-I Infantry-Model Blixtbots™ and their cargo to the border of Frost Gale safely. The half-halfling promised her an excellent reward if the task is completed successfully, and if Astrid wants to do anything, it's to impress Miss Veliky. However, this isn't a task she can undertake on her own, especially not through the dangerous Lightning Fields, so she's found help with a couple of strangers who seem inclined towards Sky magic. That's the kind she's most familiar with, and she looks forward to put her namesake to the test and weather the storms of Dragon's Cradle. Deciding she's spent enough time wandering around, Astrid returns to the group of Blixtbots™ and their cargo, hoping the others that will join them have arrived. One of them speaks in a robotic voice to her, its head mechanically turning to fixate on her. "Conscript Astrid, greeting: Welcome back. Query: At what time will we depart with the cargo?"Astrid looks at the bot, a bit of admiration on her face. The Blixtbots™ are a marvel of engineering. She hopes one day she'll have enough coin to buy a Pawn bot for herself from Miss Veliky. "We'll be leavin' here soon," she replies. "Just waitin' on two more folks ta show up. Make sure ya have a good stock of oil on ya!" It's a quip. She doesn't think that the bot will take her literally. It, of course, does. "Statement: Blixtbots™ carry a small stock of oil for repairs while enroute in the event a Blixtbots™ needs minor tuning or repairs. We are well equipped.""Oh, right, course ya are. Miss Veliky plans ahead fer stuff like that." Astrid looks around for her new companions. Renown quest page

Post by Leni-Aura Thunderpaw on Oct 17, 2022 23:20:19 GMT -5
Leni-Aura is in a bad mood; granted, she is always in a bad mood— but she is in a particularly bad mood today.
Because today, she feels like she has been duped by a particular halfling woman. She owes Veliky for the life of both herself and her caravan after a Displacer Beast attack in the Moon Glade some time ago. So, when the opportunity to pay the woman back with a favour came around, Leni-Aura was content to entertain whatever task she might ask of her… But to her surprise, the favour comes in a request to ‘babysit a shipment and its escort’. She thought it was an odd request, but she is a woman who holds to her word— a favour for a favour is fair— and she owes Veliky at least one of those... … However, what Veliky failed to mention is that it would require her to travel all the way back to the Dragon’s Cradle— her home. A place she should not be. She also failed to mention that she would be escorting a shipment and a literal child across the Lightning Fields, one of the deadliest features that the land has to offer. “ Sometimes I wonder if she is a snake,” Leni-Aura continues to complain to the man that she’s dragged with her on this escapade; mostly because he was unfortunate enough to be present when she received the request. “ a snake in a halfling’s body. A snakeling.” She flicks her ears, listening to the thunder as it grumbles in the distance; the young rabbitaur woman travels through the base camp below the village of Skypeak, accompanied by her mentor, approaching Astrid and the Blixtbots™ as they chatter amongst one another in the distance. She continues to be less than pleased, however. Curled around the neck of the man nearby is a small, winged reptilian; Nimbus clicks in small, curious sounds at her. “ ... What? You have something to say, little traitor?” she scolds the small beast, flashing him a look from where his head is visible from around Ulrich’s neck. Nimbus wiggles, seemingly only growing more excited when she looks at him. “ Who is it that pulled your egg from that landslide? Hm?” Nimbus squeaks, tail thumping against Ulrich’s shoulder with sheer, child-like joy. “ And yet, you still prefer him?” Nimbus just wriggles, stamping his feet excitedly over Ulrich’s jacket; he does not even know she’s trying to scold him. “Tsk...” Leni-Aura’s gaze softens over his joyful wiggles; but she still shakes her head as she looks towards the caravan as they near it.
“You!” she calls out to the little blonde child; she swings out with her spear, and uses it to direct a point at her. “You are Veliky’s escort, correct? The caravan is ready for travel?”

Ulrich was no stranger to Leni's many bouts of not so great moods. She was in a particularly bad mood today, in fact.
They'd found themselves back in Dragon's Cradle, why? Well, because a certain mutual acquaintance, or friend, whatever you would like to call them, had conscripted Leni to babysit a shipment and it's escort as a favor. As always, he just happened to be in the right place at the right time for Fate to throw him into another situation.
He chuckles at Leni's name calling. One could certainly get behind the idea, but Ulrich had no ill feelings towards their certain halfling employer. Some time ago he'd witnessed her do some amazing things against an elemental... Which also lead her to drinking said elemental, but that was a story for another time.
The little drake around his neck may not be able to understand what a scolding is yet, but Ulrich certainly does. He hears the venom in Leni's voice as she attempts to scold the little drake— to no avail.
"Oh, come now, Leni-Aura. He has no sense of what a traitor is. Isn't that right, Little Nimbus?" Ulrich reaches up to pet the little drake as he stamps his feet excitedly.
Her expression softens and she looks away to address the caravan. In true Leni-Aura fashion, it is a bit of a strong approach. It causes Ulrich to give a nervous chuckle, and Nimbus to chirp and click in that same energy.
"Yes, as you can tell from my apprentice's question, we were asked by Veliky to help you on this mission of yours."
Ulrich approaches with a warm smile, Nimbus around his neck mirroring the man's warm energy.
"My name is Ulrich Ambriz," he reaches up to the little drake, "This is Nimbus," and then he gracefully steps to the side as Leni strides up, "And this is Leni-Aura Thunderpaw."
He gives a slight bow and offers his hand to the blonde child, "Who might you be?"

The last thing the half-armored half-dwarf expects while looking around for companions is to turn her head and be met with the end of a spear to jut toward her face. Unfortunately, that's what happens. It startles her, she falls back off the crate onto her back. It kicks up a small cloud of Wastes dust. "Oof!" she winces, and rolls over with a clatter of armor then pulls herself back up onto the crate rubbing her head. "That's a way ta greet someone, ain't it?" she grumbles.
Astrid drags herself to her feet and dusts her butt off and takes in the newcomers. Then she blinks a few times. That lady's a rabbit. That's a tiny dragon. And that's just a dude. Her annoyance fades, and her eyes light up. "Whoaaaa, Miss Veliky didn't tell me I was gonna adventure with some special travelers!" she exclaims. With her spirits higher, she strides around the crate and introduces herself. "Me name's Astrid Stormstone. Nice ta meet alla ya!" Astrid takes Ulrich's hand and shakes it with a firm grip. Though she's learned not to rip someone's arm from their socket, it's still surprisingly strong.
She looks over at the few carts and Blixtbots™ gathered around them. "Yeah, the group's all ready ta go. Though I wish we had one of them lightnin' rods," she notes, pointing at the big metal structures around the encampment. "Honestly, I thought about knockin' one of 'em down and findin' a way to attach 'em to the carts. But since alla this has got Miss Veliky's logo on it, I figured that'd probably be a bad look fer her."
Astrid looks back at the two travelers and gets a big smile. "Can I pet yer little dragon?"

Leni-Aura pulls back her spear to ensure the child does not impale herself when she falls and looks down at the fallen girl with a cocked brow, as though confused by her surprise. Her ears perk, keen hearing catching the young girl’s grumbling; she furrows her brows, looking almost quizzically at Ulrich, as if for explanation— but he’s already gone.
“Who’s your apprentice?” she puffs back, easily drawn away from the moment. She hops after him, tail flicking as she looks to Astrid while she introduces herself. “ She didn’t tell us much either.” Leni-Aura sighs, looking towards the carts and the Blixtbots™ that have gathered around the base camp, then to the lightning rods. “ It is a good idea,” she remarks, tilting her head thoughtfully. “But you do not really need lightning rods— lightning is most often attracted to the tallest object in the field first. In this case, that is Ulrich.” She gestures towards the taller man and affirms her comment with a thoughtful nod. “ So we should be fine, and there will be no worries about Veliky’s… image.” She narrows her eyes, looking Astrid up and down: although, she doesn’t know how ‘sending a young child across the lightning fields’ positively reinforces the halfling’s image, either. She blinks when Astrid brings up the drake, and turns to look at Nimbus; he’s still curled around Ulrich’s neck; his big cyan eyes are focused on Astrid, and the second the girl’s eyes are on him, he starts to wriggle excitedly. Leni-Aura breathes an exasperated sigh. “ Mm. Go ahead. He would like nothing more than that.” Almost as if affirming it, Nimbus squeaks and extends his neck towards Astrid; his tail thumps rhythmically against Ulrich's back.

Ulrich smiles as he feels the rhythmic thumps of Nimbus' excitement on his back. He was glad that Nimbus was here with them to melt the ice with this child assigned to escort this shipment.
Honestly, Veliky, what are you thinking? Employing a child for this sort of thing? Of course, there was a reason for it. Veliky always had a reason.
"As Leni-Aura has stated, you won't have to worry about the lightning much. I'm pretty much a walking lightning rod in that aspect."
As Nimbus coos at the pets he's receiving from Astrid, an expression of ponder finds itself upon Ulrich’s face.
"If you don't mind me asking, Astrid. How did it come to be you who was assigned the task of escorting this shipment? Obviously, you care enough to take her image into consideration," he chuckled, remembering the time he found himself in a party of three that included Veliky herself. "I've traveled with Veliky before. There's usually an ulterior motive to everything with her."
He thought about the dangers that awaited them after their departure. The lightning wasn't the only threat they would face out there. They would be faced with all manner of dangers. The environment, wildlife, blood thirsty bandits looking to snatch a quick opportunity to make a stack of Solars. There had to be some kind of nice compensation for this young woman for her to be so cheerful and ready to take on an operation such as this.

Astrid has no effin' idea what she signed up for. She can't recall ever having been through the Lightning Fields. She's heard stories, but in her experiences with a certain electrical ooze, lightning doesn't particularly frighten her. She might learn a healthy does of fear in this trip. Bandits? No problem. Monsters? Also no problem. Lightning? Apparently this is also no problem.
With approval, she happily strides over and starts petting the cooing tiny drake, just absolutely melting at its cuteness. "You're just so adorable, ain't ya? Ya ready ta go on an adventure with me? Oh yes, I will give you so much attention." She gives Nimbus a gentle boop on the snout then offers the scaley boi a little bit of jerky before turning her head to Leni and Ulrich.
"How'd I get assigned this task?" she parrots ponderously. "Well," -She sets her hands on her hips confidently, gauntlets clattering as she does.- "I'd been hopin' fer a chance ta prove meself ta Miss Veliky that I'm worthy enough ta purchase one of her bots, so I didn't think much of it when she said she had a job. I didn't ask fer no details, just said yes and snatched up the opportunity. The Lightnin' Fields don't seem so bad. Don't frighten me one bit."
Astrid looks up between the concerned adults, thinking nothing of the expressions on their faces. "What about you lot? Out here fer a good payday or tryna make a good impression? Oh, or maybe Miss Veliky conned ya into it!" She laughs at the thought. Miss Veliky is tricky, but not usually without reason or a plan. That part's definitely true.

Leni-Aura’s tail twitches as she looks up at Ulrich; she nods in confirmation of his remark that he is, in fact, a walking lightning rod. “Indeed.” she remarks; though Astrid looks like she’s far from listening. Instead, she’s showering the drake in affection and treats. Nimbus’ wiggles intensify as Astrid gets closer; his tail thumps against Ulrich’s back while he receives pets from the girl; and a rumbling, clicking purr catches in his throat with the attention.
The rabbitaur’s eyes soften somewhat while watching the two interact; but the moment is gone in an instant when Astrid turns back to face them, parroting Ulrich’s question from earlier— and proving she was actually listening. “To prove yourself?” she repeats, crossing her arms over her chest as she looks at Astrid.
Although… Veliky offering to let a child buy one of her bots?
Leni-Aura did not know Veliky terribly well, but she knew her well enough to know that sounded off for the halfling woman. Still, Astrid seems pretty confident, and Leni-Aura nods her approval, ears perking curiously. “No fear in the face of danger makes for a good warrior.” she remarks, her concern for Astrid seemingly disappearing. She recalls her youth, in which she performed many daring and stupid acts in order to prove herself to her peers and mentors. Indeed... it's a way of life. “I understand your desire well.”
Astrid turns the question on them; and Leni-Aura shakes her head. “I owe Veliky a favour; my caravan were attacked some months ago, and she lost some of her bots in the battle. I promised to assist if she were to call.” After a moment of pause, she offers a gesture at Ulrich. “And he just happened to be there when she called, so he came with me, as well.”

Ah, so she wants to prove herself worthy of one of Veliky's bots, then.
Ulrich chuckles at Astrid's question.
"I'm well past the making a good impression phase. As Leni-Aura said, I just happened to be there and got dragged along. That usually happens to me." He shrugs as he's expecting Leni to try and attack him for his comment.
He turns to shift his attention towards the fields. They would certainly be able to guard Astrid and the shipment on their journey through the Lightning Fields to... to- where were they going again?
He turns back to the two, "Right, where were we supposed to escort this shipment to again?" He shifts his attention to Leni-Aura, "Did Veliky mention anything about the final destination of this operation?"
He laughs a bit to himself as he remembers the fact that Veliky keeps a dossier of everyone she works with. This whole operation could very well end with Ulrich's "demotion."
Also, they were going into a place where everything has a resistance to lightning. The primary choice of magic for him. Well, the Sky Domain isn't just about Lightning. They've got the element of wind that they can count on as well. Anywho, hopefully their journey would go without much hardship.

"Glad we'll be on the same page then!" Astrid says cheerfully in response to Leni's understanding in proving oneself and being fearless. That isn't to say Astrid isn't without fear. She's faced a healthy dose of frightening things in the last few months. She's seems to be moreover lacking in... worry? Concern? Caution might be the best word for what she lacks.
Then Astrid ponders, "I s'pose Miss Veliky is pretty transactional, ain't she? Makes sense if yer a businesswoman. She said anyone with any good sense would make sure ta always gain somethin' out of the circumstances they find themselves in. I'm hopin' ta gain her favor, and yer hopin' ta pay her back. Maybe we can all gain a friend or two outta this!" The gap-toothed and childish grin on the girl's face is genuine and hopeful. Maybe if she doesn't annoy them before this is over, she can find a few more people to rely on.
She starts over towards the bots when Ulrich asks about the destination. "We're headed to the border of Frost Gale," she replies. "I heard it's a tough journey, but lotsa things are tough, ya know? Me included. I'll kick anyone's butt who messes with us!" At her side, Astrid pats her trusty hammer which seems to have a cord on a loop embedded into the end. The other end of the cord appears to be attached to her gauntlet and occassionally floats about in different directions as she emotes with her arms.
She speaks up to the collected metal humanoids with some sense of presence though somewhat shrill in her young age. "Alright BlixtbotsTM, we're leavin' out for the fields! This is Leni-Aura and Ulrich, and they're gonna help me protect alla you! If ya keep yer heads on straight and do as yer told, we'll all make it across in one piece!"
One of the bots speaks up, their head mechanically cocking as they speak. "Conscript Astrid, declaration: BlixtbotsTM are made with the utmost care and quality materials. A BlixtbotTM's head should not need to be "kept on straight" nor will they fall from a BlixtbotTM's shoulders unless a great force is exerted upon them."
"You bots really got no idea what turn o' phrase is, huh?" she murmurs.

“If you did not passively agree to everything, it might happen less.” Surprisingly enough, the rabbitaur doesn’t move to smack at him; but she does offer him a cocked brow and a frown; but then again, Ulrich’s whole ‘following the wind’ and ‘whisperings of Avasha’ lectures have gotten a hold of her too… Putting her in odd scenarios that she would otherwise not find herself in… and it’s stressful! Why does he do this to himself? Or, why does Avasha do it to them? It’s weird, but she has to admit to some degree, occasionally following the whims of the wind does seem to lead her to events in which she feels she needs to be.
She looks towards Astrid once more, awaiting the young girl’s explanation of the situation. “She has always been quite… that way, yes…” Leni-Aura can’t quite get a grip on the larger words in Astrid’s vocabulary, but she just nods in agreement, regardless. “We would also like to stay alive until Frost Gale as well, so there is that. Our goals will line up, regardless.” Astrid is all bright smiles and optimism, but she quite likes the girl: she’s got moxie and courage, even if it’s masked as childish recklessness and blissful ignorance.
She watches Astrid pat her trusty hammer, and nods.
“The Dragon’s Cradle is merciless; my warren has lived in the Lightning Fields for many years. The weather is unpredictable, and many things lurk beneath the clouds; but we will be fine. I am more than capable of guiding us through most elemental hazards, and he…” she gives Ulrich a side-eye.
She watches Nimbus try to climb up Ulrich’s hair from the back, until he’s peeping over some guy’s head to look at Astrid.
“...is capable of a few many things. Together, we will be fine.”
She looks back to Astrid, listening to the young girl’s announcement, and then the bot’s response. She rolls her eyes. “They are just the same as ever…” she murmurs with a shake of her head; she’s only met Veliky’s Blixtbot™’s a number of times; but they are always strange and confusing to her. “Are we prepared to leave?” she addresses the bots. “If so, we should leave; the Lightning Fields are worse at night, and we should make as much ground as we can throughout the day.”

Ulrich receives Leni's side eye with a warm, slightly goofy smile. All the while the small drake has climbed up onto his hair, peeking over his head. He reaches up to pet Nimbus as he chirps and squeaks at the attention he's being given.
"Yes, of course. I can do some things so we will definitely be fine!" He exclaims as he pulls out his sketchbook. He's looking for notes on the Lightning Fields. You never know when they might come in handy. At this point, Ulrich is really putting on the image of "just some guy" who happened to be dragged along on this mission.
Nimbus watches from atop the man's head as his finger runs through the various notes he's taken on the Lightning Fields. A pondering look on his face. He closes the book and places it back in his satchel.
"Yes, as Leni-Aura has said, making ground right now while we have the light is the best option for us. Unless, of course, you'd like to get a good bit of fighting with whatever is out there?"
A wind blew through the group as Ulrich spoke, and he turns to the fields. The sound of distant lightning can be heard— a bit of an omen, if you were to ask him what his thoughts were at this moment.
His back is turned to them, and the two can see him take in a deep breath and exhale as his shoulders rise and fall.
He turns back to them.
"Well then, shall we get this show on the road?" He says with a warm smile.

Astrid agrees that it's time to get moving. She spent a bit of time wandering around and sitting waiting, so she's raring to go. It doesn't take long to get the BlixtbotsTM ready to move, and they robotically begin marching out of the base camp with the two carts full of cargo in tow. Astrid confidently leads them into the fields, pulling out a map to help try to guide them. Luckily, there's a road leading northwest towards Frost Gale, so they stick to that. They march at a decent pace as the BlixtbotsTM don't tire out.
Throughout the journey, Astrid chats Ulrich and Leni's ears off about anything and everything. Not that she notices herself doing it, she's just happy to have someone to talk to and travel with again. She shows off her greaves, which have a thin ever-present coating of a blue-tinged slimy substance, and her dinged up, misfitting gauntlets that she's proud to have taken off a bandit. Gods above can this girl talk. Hopefully it's at least entertaining for the other two, because the BlixtbotsTM often just make sounds of agreement when she asks about something.
As the day wears on, the wind picks up, and the ever-present stormclouds seem to grow thicker. Thunder rumbles in the distance, but the imminent danger does not deter Astrid. They're simply the rumblings of Avasha's tummy.

She rolls her eyes, her shoulders falling as she looks off to her side; the sigh she heaves is exasperated. “ Men ritsre phase naas enatung…” (Does anything phase this man?) she murmurs in halfling before looking back to Astrid. One hand moves to rest against her hip, the other holding her spear to point to the sky, while Ulrich confirms it’d be best for them to make ground. “ Regardless of what comes to fight us, we can handle it.” she boasts— but the wind gives her pause. She turns to look in the direction it had come, ears tilting back for just a moment, before she looks back to Ulrich. “ ...Yes, we should go.”
Does this child ever stop talking? Throughout the journey, Astrid can go on about literally anything; the most mundane things are an exciting event for her to recount. To her credit, she does have some fun stories about her armour, which Leni-Aura finds herself appreciating the most. Every now and then, Leni-Aura offers her own recount of a tale— one, of the time she hunted a basilisk in the Lightning Fields opposite the mountain— and another of her last visit to Dragon’s Cradle, when it had rained acid. At least this time, she knows the smell of the acid— the rain which is coming for them now is not that. She looks up to the sky, feeling the ominous rumble in the pads of her paws as Avasha groans overhead. She’s had a bad feeling ever since they set out, but it seems to only worsen as the clouds thicken. It frustrates her that she can’t place the feeling, but… She looks begrudgingly at some guy. “... Hey,” she adjusts her steps, moving away from Astrid to join him at his pace. Nimbus has finally returned to her for now, sleeping in a curled bundle on Leni-Aura’s back to keep warm. “Do you feel… Sto goo na motn…?” (What are the words?) she looks away for a moment, lapsing into the halfling tongue, before looking back to him. “Does something feel off to you, too?”

They had set off into the Lightning Fields, Astrid was talking nonstop since they had begun their journey, and Leni— well, it was a bit of a surprise to Ulrich that Leni was actually sharing stories with Astrid so casually. In all the time that he's been mentoring her, seeing her slowly warming up to someone in a short span of time like this... It was nice to witness. She still had the habit of trying to hit him and giving him the cold shoulder sometimes. At least Astrid didn't feel uncomfortable around her.
He listened to the two talk as they marched along. His sketchbook was held out in front of him as his eyes moved back and forth, reading the various notes he'd taken of the Lightning Fields. They would do well to be prepared for whatever threw itself their way on this journey.
His concentration on his notes is broken as he hears Leni's voice directed at him. He watches as she changes her pace to match his. It seemed as though Leni had been getting an off feeling for a while now.
Ulrich's eyes slightly narrow as he ponders on her question.
"So it wasn't just me then." His gaze dances back and forth as he scans the immediate area. "I agree with you that there seems to be something off putting about our current location."
Now that Leni had pointed it out, the ominous aura he felt couldn't be ignored.
He gestured towards Astrid, indicating to Leni that they should stay closer together now. His senses were on alert now as he quietly scanned their surroundings again.
