Sylvari's giggling increased at the triton's words, as she playfully shoved him on the shoulder. "Now I can see your true nature, Vonoros. You are well and truly a rogue and ruffian to say such things to a lady with such cheek." Her confident words came in stark contrast with the deep scarlet that flushed her cheeks at Vonoros' flirting.
Sylvari brought a light hand up to her face to cover her face, her fingers exceptionally delicate considering the contrast with the imposing armor she usually wore. It was possible that her emotional armor was doffed as well this night. It had been some time since she was so affected by flattery. Unable to remain serious at Vonoros' wry grin, she averted her eyes to answer his next statement.
"You misunderstand my statement about the stars, dear. I understand every person is beautiful and unique in their own way. I say insignificance is a comforting thought because, for one with such regrets, it gives me hope that eventually any sins committed will be washed away with new life. The gentle balance of the cosmos will extend far beyond my passing, and in time, the pain wrought will fade."
Sylvari's words and tone were bright and hopeful, but the pained smile on her face spoke of an abiding sorrow that only death could sever. Her melancholy lasted a few seconds, rendering her unable to answer the triton's next question as she recomposed herself.
"My... passion, yes. I was born into it. The People are trained from birth for it, but I would like to think in another life, I would still endeavor towards the good of my fellow people."

Vonoros reeled back playing a joke as he whined, “Ow, Sylvi you got to watch that strength of yours almost tore my poor little shoulder off” and chuckles happily with himself. He couldn’t help but smile and stay mesmerized by Sylvari. He had a new goal in mind and that was to keep making her giggle. He liked it, it was his favorite sound, and he didn’t want it to stop.
“Oh, I am a ruffian, to say the least with a nefarious goal in mind, sweeping you off your feet. After all, I have been faced with my most challenging and alluring opponet”, he says looking at her eyes.
He feels a little embarrassed as he realizes he misunderstood what she meant, “Ah I get what you meant sorry for bringing that up. Watching stars is cool though I get what you mean. Since I mostly sleep outside because of my lack of money I tend to sleep watching the stars above. It’s a wonderful sight to see getting lost in the sky above, almost as wonderful as losing myself in those beautiful eyes sweetheart”, he says, a little embarrassed at saying such an obvious line.
“I’m surprised to hear there are more people like you, sorry to say I’ve never met someone like you before dear. What was it like growing up? It seems you had some good set of guiding eyes on you”.
After a couple more minutes, Madame Nocera walks by behind her two tall muscular orcs in well-dressed shirts holding two plates covered by a fancy metal cover.
Madame Nocerna waits as the two men place their meals before them, pulling back on the covers to reveal their food.
“For Vonoros I present Owlbear Egg Omelette with Monkfish and Cockatrice Skewers served with Gin”
“For the lady baloth Wellington done extremely rare drizzled with a special red sauce", she winks at Sylvari, "alongside panna cotta served with a glass of red wine”.
She smiles before waving her servers behind her chuckling sweetly, “I’ll leave you lovebirds to it”.

As Vonoros continued flattering her, Sylvari was transported back, years and miles, to a lesson her father had taught her when she was but a girl on the cusp of growing up. One of the villages her people helped on their roaming routes through the Crescent Isles sheltered a boy who had been sweet on her, determined to impress her, despite the world of difference dividing them. He would follow her as she worked, layering compliments and gifts on her in equal, generous measure. For the inexperienced girl, who had only received harsh instruction from her father, she felt like the most special person in the world.
Her father kept a watchful, disapproving eye of the whole affair and chose not to prevent tragedy when it struck. There was a certain kind of sweet-smelling flower in that place, pleasant in small doses, but its fumes were lethal after prolonged exposure. The signs of danger were there for those who knew what to look for: the absence of animals, even insects around the small patch of wildflowers, the vibrant coloration of their petals, but the boy was blinded by fancy, gathering up a large bundle for his beloved.
Her father brought Sylvari to see his body the next day, laid out with beautiful scattered flowers of death all around him. Sylvari was shocked and tears welled in her eyes, and she turned to her father for comfort. She instead only found cold words and a harsh lesson. "You indulged on his given praise for days and weeks and it blinded you to the dangers of this place. If your head was on its shoulders properly, you would have known the boy foolish enough to collect the death flowers, but you attributed infallibility to him because he praised you. Flattery is a currency that only buys vanity and arrogance; it is sweet-smelling but will lead to ruin." He gestured to the obvious example before him and turned to walk away, leaving his daughter to comprehend the brutal reality of his words. Sylvari's sobs could be heard well into the night.
Suddenly she was back, her smile faltering at the memory, as Vonoros' praise faded in its ability to affect her, despite her trusting his intentions and capabilities. While they were both strong and able, weakening each other with compliments became a detestable thought to her.
Sylvari's smile had nearly faded entirely when the food was brought out, and she could only manage a slight nod of appreciation to Madame Nocera. In light of her memory, Vonoros' question was particularly poignant.
"Yes, Vonoros. My upbringing was not a thing many would desire. It was painful, but necessary. My people taught me the lessons needed to survive." Sylvari was unable to slip back under the pleasant ease of the evening as she prodded at her food, having lost her appetite.

Vonoros noticed his date’s faltering smile and became worried, “Did I do something wrong? Did I mess up? Is she thinking about my confession earlier? Yeah, right. Why did I ever think someone like me could be with someone like her? I’m so dumb why did I think some beautiful knight obsessed with justice could be into me, a monster”, he thinks as he plays with his food, disinterested and quiet.
He then looks at her and sighs, “Hey Sylvi I hate for this to be awkward and quiet since I liked hearing you laugh. I like you a lot and want to know if I did something wrong. Was it the flattery? If so I’m sorry I’m new to this whole romance and flirting thing so sorry if I’m laying it on thick. I’m not used to talking to people I have an interest in, my parents and mentor didn’t teach me anything about it”, he chuckles, “We can sit here in silence if you want and then conclude the night and never speak again if you’d like”.
Suddenly one of the figures who were whispering and staring at Vonoros walks alongside the two and ‘accidentally spills his drink over Vonoros’s right side covering the right side of his white shirt in red wine.
“Oh, whoops I’m so clumsy I’m sorry my friend”, the man says in a very condescending tone chuckling.
Vonoros's eyes sharpen for a second as he grasps the knife of the utensils on the table before suddenly grabbing the man by his collar and placing the knife to his neck.
He then whispers in his ear, “Don’t mess with me right now, I’m not in the mood if you or anyone else does anything to me or my date I will kill you Madame Nocera’s rules be damned”.
He lets go of the man whose eyes are filled with terror and fear as he trips and walks back to his table.
Vonoros then sighs, sliding his hand over his face, “Yep just like I’d thought this would go, sorry you had to see that Sylvi. Call it instinct I guess, dammit I should've taken you to the friendly giant, even if it’s kind of loud and annoying it’d be better than being next to an some weird assassin within his natural environment”.

Sylvari's heart broke with sympathy for her date, who, through no fault of his own that he could be blamed for, had fallen right into one of her emotional pitfalls.
"No, no. I'm sorry, Vonoros. You've been very kind. I just have broken pieces. I-" Her explanation was cut short as another patron clearly purposefully spilled his drink over the triton's fine white shirt. Sylvari's annoyance flared at the juvenile disturbance, glad at least that the Madame's rules of neutrality limited hostility to this relatively harmless harassment. She had certainly suffered far worse in her time for her mission.
Vonoros, apparently, had not, or else was so soured in his mood to not be in his right state of mind. In a flash of motion, Vonoros' assassin training was on full display, as he held a cutting knife to the man's throat and threatened his life. Soon enough, without further harm, Vonoros had let the man go, but Sylvari was on edge, eyes narrowed and wisps of black energy beginning to form over her fingers [Eldritch Claws]. After several seconds of heavy breathing to calm herself down, Sylvari released her hold on the magic as her blackened claws blew away like smoke on the wind.
She couldn't help but feel partially responsible for the triton's quick temper, but her mission did not afford her the luxury of partiality, even with close friends. If Vonoros had struck, she would have been honor-bound to retaliate, a date soured to deadly combat. She tried, to repeated failure, to smile again, but her upturned mouth held none of the easy warmth that had been between the pair moments ago.
Adding yet more grease to the growing fire of this disaster, Sylvari spied Le Fey standing up to walk out the back of the establishment. Of all the black luck... "I'm- I just need to calm down a bit, Vonoros. Please excuse me. I'm just going to run to the restroom." Without waiting for a response, the justiciar rose quickly and stalked after the crime boss, slinking like a panther pursuing her prey.

“But I want to be there to help pick those pieces up to get to know you better too…”, his voice trails off as if she’s gone.
He chuckles to himself, “Welp that went about how I expected, a man can dream of being happy huh, but monsters are doomed to face reality”.
He sits there finishing his food by himself and slams down his gin before looking around at all the eyes on him.
“Fuck off”, he says to everyone around before getting up and leaving through the back door opposite where Sylvari went.
“Yeah right going to the bathroom, she’s gone, she had a good idea though, man I'm so dumb for thinking a monster could be with someone”.
He pushes past the kitchen doors and walks through the kitchen taking a drumstick of meat with him as he unbuttons his shirt.
Madame Nocera walks behind him, “What’s wrong Vonoros? Did you do something? I’m sorry I didn’t work out”.
The triton just keeps walking as he eats, “Yeah yeah it’s fine granny I messed it up, stuff didn’t work out she’s gone. If you need me I’ll be at the Duck and Cover. If I’m going to be sad and lonely I might as well be drunk”.
He then walks outside to the back alley taking off his hair tie and shaking off his shoes walking out to head to the tavern. Suddenly he’s surrounded by a lot of men in suits as the guy who he threatened earlier laughing and pointing stands behind his boss, a familiar Kobold prince of crime who stands in front of him smoking his cigar, “Bad move Vonnie making a fool of my guy in there, now boys teach him a listen”.
Vonoros couldn’t help but smile as he kept chewing on the drumstick pounding his fist together, “Thank the fucking gods for giving me punching bags to blow off some steam”.

Once Sylvari hit the cobblestone street behind the restaurant, she tore off her fancy shoes, favoring the speed and ease of maneuverability that her bare feet would provide. Thanks to her quick action, she could still sense the presence of the mage attending to Le Fey as the little group rounded a corner [Chaos Touched]. She ran after them, feet pounding on the stones below as Sylvari pushed away thoughts of her date in guilt. If I can just deal with Le Fey quickly, I can be back before he even leaves. I owe him that much. Gods, I'm a terrible date. This is why I can never be in a relationship.
As she rounded a corner, the three men were waiting for her, a fact she already knew thanks to their resident arcana user, so she was well-prepared to dodge an incoming blow, sliding just under the trajectory of a fist from Le Fey's enforcer.
"So, I see little Miss Justice is determined to be a thorn in my side. I was going to spare you, you know. The little song and dance of avoiding you has been for your benefit, little one. You remind me of my late daughter, and I suppose I'm getting sentimental in my twilight years. No more, though." The man turned to his lackeys. "Kill her."
Sylvari had been preparing a spell through the entirety of Le Fey's speech and so, when the underlings whirled into action, she released the dormant energy, calling up a hulking amalgamation of twisted bone and discarded flesh to deal with the enforcer [Summon Undead Hulk]. She had barely finished her conjuration when a forking stream of lightning shot at her from the mage's hand. Shocking all of the gathered criminals, Sylvari lunged forward and bit the streak of light, absorbing the energy as she ate it [Mage Slayer, Spell Drinker].
As she rose, empowered by the rejuvenating energy she had absorbed, a shining mark of enmity appeared over the mage's heart [Mage Slayer, Sworn Enemy]. She advanced with lengthening claws, as her minion dispatched the other goon, and shredded the magic user to ribbons in a shower of gore, dancing back just in time to spare her elegant black dress from his vile blood. She turned to look at Le Fey with vengeful crimson eyes, which could be seen under her veil from the light breeze that made it flutter upward.

Vonoros glared at the kobold kingpin as he leaned against the stone wall smoking his cigar as his 4 henchmen sprinted forward. He and this kobold had some history, he had served as a hitman for this guy taking down some of the nearby small-time gang leaders leaving him enough room to take control of a portion of the city. He didn’t mind or care about the politics of it but eyed the man closely over the years as he built his empire.
“Hey, get ‘em boys he doesn’t have a weapon, not so strong without that long staff or lance now huh are ya big guy”, one of the yells before getting kicked back.
“Shut up”, the triton said as he held his hand out, conjuring his ice spear in his hand (1. Ice Sike) and pointing it towards the goons in front of him, “Alright boys say goodnight”.
The brawl began and it was pretty one-sided with Vonoros dashing through and forth the goons spinning his ice spear around driving it through legs, arms, and abdomens although something was different about this beat-up. Vonoros couldn’t help but keep Sylvari in mind as he thought purposefully missing vital and brutal points like the face, heart, and other key points he’d normally go for when fighting. Although he knew in his heart it was over and he’d likely never see her again, a selfish part of him couldn’t help but want to see her again so was keeping her in mind. His hands became filled with the blood of his enemies and he walked towards the kobold criminal shouting, “Xefen give it up your little joke is done” and charged forth bloodied ice spear in hand.
Xefen could only laugh, “Nah embarrassing is that date between you and that lady, she was too good for you and you know it. I’m glad she was able to get out when she did, hey at least this makes you free now. What do you say? I got a job in mind already, I’m thinking you will track and find this merchant that pissed me off the other day”.
“Nah, screw off Zefen I’m through with you”, he says as he thrusts his spear forward only to find Xefen chuckle and fire something from his pocket, a small crossbow in his hand as he ran away, “Seeya Vonnie no hard feelings talk to me when you’re not all pissy”.
The triton grunts as he looks down to his knee, streaming blood and bolt in it, “Welp at least this day can’t get any worse. I need a drink time to head over”, he says left leg still had the bolt in it limping away towards the tavern.

The hulking abomination Sylvari had summoned ran toward the crime boss, and was quickly dispatched, ground to dust under the weight of his mighty fists. Flavius Le Fey was no pushover. He had risen through the ranks of the underworld through guile, wit, and no small amount of personal strength. In another life, he may have been one of Sylvari's preeminent allies. Here and now though, he had set himself against her, and was thus another casualty in her holy mission.
He just didn't know it yet.
"Not bad bad for a little girl, though I would have been disappointed if those weaklings managed to kill you." Sylvari's inhuman eyes blazed in response to Le Fey's words. She held up a hand to stop him from speaking further, using her other one to lift her veil so she could gaze at him unimpeded. She found it helped with the control.
Sylvari normally hated using her cursed power of supremacy, but she thought such a fitting end for one such as he who exploited the weak all his life. She leveled an imperious gaze at Le Fey, and issued a single command in a tone that demanded obedience [Powerful Presence]. "Kneel."
The crime boss was only too eager to comply, his will overruled by her powerful presence. She stood over him, blood still dripping from her claws from his comrade, as she grabbed his face and forced him to look up at her.
"Flavius Le Fey. The blood of the men, women, and children you exploited calls out to me from the streets. By their pleas you have been judged and found wanting. I sentence you now to go to the embrace of the gods. Pray they have more mercy than I."
Sylvari's eyes flashed, releasing her control an instant before she struck, allowing him to feel all the cold fury of justice's arrival. Le Fey's eyes went wide with the horror of mortal peril an instant before Sylvari's sharpened fingers pierced his chest and lungs, preventing his ability to cry out. As she wrenched her hand free, his blood splattered on her prized black dress that she had taken so much care in safeguarding.
Sylvari's face was in a pronounced frown at the development, as she walked away, leaving Le Fey to choke on a pool of his own blood. She walked with a quickened pace back to the restaurant, meeting Madame Nocera outside, who blessedly asked no questions about her condition and told her where to find Vonoros. Sylvari thanked her and headed to the bar in question, arriving a few minutes later.

Vonoros continued limping towards the bar at this point his mind was blank, the night hadn’t been so bad all things considered. Sure he’d lost out on a big payday but he at least was able to go on a date with a pretty lady even if it was cut short and he even gotta crack some heads open. He pushed the doors forward without care and walked toward the counter where the muscular dragonborn barkeep greeted him with a, “Hey Vono what’ll it be? The Usual?”.
“Yep, start prepping up the cups Jugoo, it's been a rough day, to say the least”, he said as he rested his head on the wooden counter.
He didn’t even lift his head from its place as he heard the other man open the tap and serve him up a large tankard of Fairae Fireball sliding the drink and hitting the side of his head as it stopped. He then slowly raised his head before grabbing the drink and drinking it slowly, there was a reason he liked this place, it was quiet usually during this time. No one was there to bother him, no one there for him to hurt, there was Jugoo but he forgot he was there sometimes. He had just finished his tankard and slammed it down about to ask for another when he heard the doors swing up.
He at first didn't even bother to look back thinking nothing of it before Jugoo pointed at the figure and said, “Looks like you got company, I’ll be in the back”.
He turned his head slowly as the figure sat at the chair next to him he smiled softly before chuckling, “Well this is a weird coincidence, looks like you are following me, sweetheart, what here to arrest me already”.
His voice then softens, “What’s up Ms. Dawnsage I’ll leave if you want me to, I don’t wanna be a bother for you my favorite lovely lady”.

Sylvari walked forward with painful elegance, unnaturally graceful, despite the blood covering the bottom of her fine dress and coating her left arm as it hardened over her skin. She threw a veiled glance in Vonoros' direction as he spoke, but remained silent and stoic as she approached the bar. She took a seat on the bar stool next to him, keeping her face studiously trained forward as she grabbed one of the arranged cups on the counter, dumped its contents, and replaced them with a vial she withdrew from the small bag she carried, pouring a viscous red liquid into the glass before downing it.
The whole time, she had not spoken or even glanced in Vonoros' direction, other than her first acknowledgment. Finally, after pouring a second vial directly into her mouth, she spoke, still facing rigidly forward. "It was nice to pretend for an afternoon, wasn't it?" A macabre and unsettling smile settled onto her face as she continued speaking.
"We're killers, you and I. Simple domestic pleasures of romance should be left to the masses." Sylvari turned on her stool, her profile finally facing the triton. "I used you to gain entrance to the restaurant and to get closer to my target. He's dead now, or dying still. We can dispense with the niceties of whatever this arrangement was. We're better off without each other."
Sylvari turned back forward, her face a dead mask, devoid of emotion. Inside however, she was breaking down. It wasn't true. She cared deeply, and that fact was what made the more unsavory portions of her oath all the more unbearable. She had wanted nothing more than to enjoy a nice quiet evening with a new friend, but opportunity forced her hand. Her personal desires would always take second place in the face of her duty. Justice was her first love, and so jealous was its affections that there could be room for no one else. Her callous attitude was the only way she knew to prevent further pain: keeping others at an arm's length to avoid their hurt becoming a necessary consequence of her mission.

Vonoros stood there hands on his cup and said, “Yep it sure was a beautiful lady, it was nice to imagine for even a minute that we were normal people. Killers don’t deserve good things; we're too far gone for nice earthly pleasures. After all, where we go after we die won’t be a nice place”.
He then chuckles softly, “Yeah as for using me I had a feeling so don’t feel guilty I would've done the same thing to get close to a target. I’m glad to hear you at least got it done and were productive on our date. And you’re right it would be the smartest decision for us to just pretend that each other don’t exist”.
He stays quiet until Sylvari walks a few steps and then says, “But hey I don’t make good decisions, if I did I’d be boring. Hey, Sylvari wants to make a contract? Heh, damn that's the first time I’m the one saying it. We both are monsters in our ways, killers who are horrible for society just by existing. I like you, I like you a lot Sylvari not because of all the beautifulness, the passion, the justice but everything your toughness, your honesty, even the overworking, obsessive sense of justice I like it too. I know it sounds selfish and I know it sounds silly but I want to take it all the good and the bad. I know I’ll always be second to your sense of good and justice and that's more than fine, being together all the time attached at the hip would be too boring. Just because we’re bad people with bad habits and past doesn’t mean we can’t learn to be good…maybe together”.

Unable to maintain her façade any longer, Sylvari felt her lips quivering between a joyful smile and a frown of profound sorrow. As no one else was in the bar at this time, Sylvari removed her veil to reveal her crimson eyes, glossing over with unshed tears. She walked over to the triton, taking his larger green hands in her dainty, blood-soaked ones.
"Oh, Vonoros. I said we were killers, not that we were monsters. I have spilled oceans of blood, and yet I maintain hope that after all accounts have been settled, my ledger will still be positive, else I would disappear from this world forever. I want the same for you, and I think you're on that path." She placed one of her hands on Vonoros' chest, feeling the gentle thump of his heartbeat. "Keep following your golden heart, and I know you will bring more good than ill in this world." Sylvari leaned forward, pressing her blood red lips against Vonoros' in a soft, innocent kiss that was over before it truly began.
"But..." The justiciar stepped away, removing her hands and extricating himself from his presence. "My oath forces me to face harsh realities. As much as my heart in rebellion rails against the boundaries set in place by my honor, I cannot forsake my path. It's the only thing I have left. I can only serve one ideal, and justice has the entirety of my being under its iron grasp. Besides, you deserve a partner who could devote themselves to you wholly, heart and soul. I cannot do that, and my heart would break everyday, chaining you to a half-hearted romance doomed to failure."

His eyes flew up with delight as she removed her veil and revealed those sweet crimson eyes he was mesmerized by. He felt her dainty blood-soaked hands with his blood-soaked and scarred hands and felt a strange calm wash over him.
He stays silent listening to her before saying his one final protest, “That’s fair my dear hopefully by the end of all of this we’ll be remembered for good. I’ll keep doing my part to make both of you and the world happy”.
He then comes up with his final proposition with all the passion he gained from that kiss he says, “I understand your oath and my line of work needs us to swear our time and efforts to them but I’ll I'm saying is why don’t we just give us a shot? No mushy gushy living together doing everything together being together always that’s not what I want at all, I can’t do that. I don’t want someone who’s attached to me and who only has me in mind, that's not my vibe. Just maybe just giving our hearts to each other knowing that the other is out there loving us wherever they are knowing that each of us is devoted to each other in spirit. We’re both adventurers, love like ours doesn’t have to be static and boring playing to some tired rules. I don’t deserve anything in love, not a single thing at all, I don’t want a partner who can commit to me heart and soul that sounds way too much. This isn’t some half-hearted romance doomed to fail my dear, this could be something different than the standard something new. I propose something different. I guess you can kind of call it a long-distance relationship. We both have our paths to walk, maybe even not together but being together in spirit that's enough for me if you’ll have my heart”.

Sylvari was unnaturally still at Vonoros' proposition. A normal girl in her position, having just given her first kiss and being bombarded with sincere, if unorthodox, proclamations of love, would be flushed and panting, overwhelmed by the gravitas of it all. While the storm of emotions certainly raged inside Sylvari, she lacked any of the vital life processes that would elicit such a response. This fact culminated with everything else to build her deep sadness.
"My dear, please. This is hard enough on us both without proposing such compromises. We might be ok with this arrangement for a week, a month, a year or more, but what then? Romantic love is a jealous thing: half a heart cannot function. That's not a bad thing: it's the most beautiful thing in the world. Love makes life worth living, and I will die to protect it. I cannot have it, though. I'm sorry, but I respect the institution too much to have anything less than its full measure. If the cost of my oath is one fragment of a piece of true love, then I shall stand ever as its guardian, but never as a participant. I will carry the memory of you and our time together fondly in my heart, but I can promise nothing more."
Sylvari stepped forward again tentatively, straining at arm's length, as if afraid to be pulled in again, never to escape the gravity of the emotion, as she caressed Vonoros' cheek lightly. Her tone was quivering, panicked, as if afraid he would make a mistake that he could never recover from. She was truly weak in that moment, powerless to safeguard the one who had come to mean so much to her. "Please don't sell yourself short, Vonoros. You deserve the fullness of devotion as much as anyone has claim.
