As Taki turns the not-carrot over in her hand, Askr can't help but shift a little uneasily, fingertips drumming against Yggdrasil's scabbard where it hangs at his hips; the more pieces of this puzzle they string together, the more confident he becomes that they're being surveilled, playing into some grand and horrible joke by some grand and horrible power. It does not help to hear Shaa's contribution, either-- that the dog they'd all seen benignly sitting by the side of some playful child was an unwillingly transfigured human.
It's all a lot, and it's all at least a little unnerving, but there is one mercy to it all; the magics are all the same, or of the same kind. Transfiguration, illusion, a struggle to hold onto the tangible, perhaps a bit of hysteria-- it all traces back to the mind, to the loss of the body, to mischief. The chances of these coming from different forces are slim to nonexistent.
It's a small comfort, but it is at least nice to figure that it is just... one force, and not many, however powerful.
"...I agree with Mr. Shaa," Askr murmurs, barely raising his voice. "In that we should go to the farmhouse, I mean-- there's likely more to be found there. Especially if we're being led that way."
And with that, he starts off down the path toward the farmhouse, his tread slow, just to wait for his companions to come with him.

The carrot certainly doesn’t feel like right. It’s surface is rough and it feels narrower than it appears. But a little nibble couldn’t hurt…right? As the gust sweeps across the village and into the forest, there are a few things of note. One is the sounds of surprise from the villagers at the unexpected sudden gust of wind. Two is that the woolful offer no reaction, and even their wooly exterior barely shifts as one would expect. Three is that the "eyes" in the trees disappear, and a few of the trees remain completely still despite others around them shuddering in the wind. Returning back to Taki, the shaman would note that there is indeed a path that leads deeper through the forest, but it’s visibly obscured. The woolfuls are confirmed to not actually be there, with the winds telling Taki the pen is empty. And even beyond the pen, the forest is also surprisingly void of animal life. The dog runs up to Taki and Askr before looking back at Shaa. It then runs up to the farmhouse's front door and scratches at it. From the looks of things, the door seems locked and the windows are all closed. There are no lights on inside the house, and the smoke stack isn't active. Given the number of weeds around the front steps, the house seems to have been left vacant for some time…except Shaa and Taki would pick up some vibrations of something moving around on the inside of the home just before there’s the sound of something falling onto the floor which all three adventurers hear. The dog’s hackles raise as its fur bristles and it snarls at the door. Something is inside. Shaa Rhunn Shitakibo Askr Mimameith

Shaa stepped away from the house back to the yard motioning for the shaggy dog/man to follow his lead. He wasn’t sure what was running around in the house but he could feel it was something real. If it was dangerous, he knew two things about it. It wasn’t trying to hide or wasn’t clever enough to. The other thing was that, if it was dangerous, why wouldn’t it just bust down the door or crash out a window and come after them? Either it wanted them to go inside or it was sealed in there. He needed to know which. Shaa wasn’t born yesterday and whatever it was would have to do better than that to get the jump on him.
With the ground beneath him, Shaa summons two two bulky rock golems from the ground in front of him. With a bit of a push, he imbues them with life and they start to stir. The two creatures look at him waiting for their orders. He points at the door. Punch your way through that door. If anything attacks when you do, take it out. The two stone creatures give a slight nod of understanding and start making their way towards the door. Golems aren’t subtle. They would try to make as much of a racket as they could giving his companions a chance to sneak around and flank whatever was waiting for them.
The creatures make it to the door and start punching it as hard as they can with their stone fists in an attempt to break it. Shaa focuses and prepares for anything that may try and come after him.

"Alright, let's go see what's going on in the... house." Taki replied, turning to see Shaa summoning a pair of Stone Creations. After imbuing them with life, they began assaulting the door vigorously. She couldn't help but smirk at the tactic, and took the opportunity given to slip around the side of the house. Hopping the small fence without much effort or sound1, she approached the back side of the house.
Without light from within, the windows looked more like dim mirrors reflecting their surroundings. Picking a shadowy spot within sight of the door, she followed the progress inside through Geomagnetic Sense2 and waited. While Askr was getting into position, she pulled out a small notepad and made a simple map of the trail she'd discovered. To go with it, Taki wrote some short-hand notes about the other discoveries. Satisfied for the moment, the shaman turned her attention to the house while listening for any warnings from either of her companions.
She couldn't help but wonder what the point of these illusory effects was, why all the effort to mask their disturbance in such an obvious way. All Taki could do for the moment was have patience and let this play out one step at a time. Ahead of a potential fight, she spent a moment to call on a Sprite3. Beside Cirrus, an elemental spirit manifested and hovered closely. They would relentlessly assault any foe with bolts of flame, following the Stormcloud Servant.

Askr knows something is not right the moment they make it up to the farmhouse. It comes in the form of something colliding with the floor, of the dog vaulting into a display of aggression, in the unease that suddenly permeates the group at large as the realization that something lurks within the home hits them. It is impossible to say what lurks within, now, but it hardly seems to care for the structure of the house at large, for the arrangement of the things inside, and that alone is enough to convey that whatever it is is an unwelcome guest. For a moment, Askr simply pauses, glancing over to Shaa and Taki as they make their own moves– Shaa… summons up golems from the earth, urging them to storm the door in an aggressive approach, all as Taki starts to slink off to the back of the house. Though he’s certainly capable of an aggressive entrance, Askr knows his strengths lie within silence, and so he is quick to follow Taki to the back of the house, nodding in quiet understanding as she settles into a shadowy spot a short distance from the door. As little help as he’s been thus far, it is… good that he has a chance to contribute, now. He steps up to the back wall of the house, pressing his palm against the surface of it, channeling a sharp concentration of magic into his index finger as he starts to trace the outline of a circle over the wood– nothing too vast, merely… big enough for him to crawl through. [1] It’s best not to create too obvious of an opening, after all. As soon as the door opens up, Askr quickly slinks through it, tucking himself away against the wall, quick to try and take refuge in the dark, intent on avoiding the gaze of whatever may roam the inside of the farmhouse. [2/3] It’s better to wait and watch, for now– and hopefully Shaa’s golems will be a sufficient distraction.

At Shaa’s gesturing, the dog backs away from the door to give the adventurers room to do whatever it is they have planned. The appearance of the golems definitely isn’t the most subtle approach, and some of the surrounding townsfolk look over at the home curious as to just what is going on. “Hey! What are you doing over there? Mr. Phil ain’t home!” Shouts one townsfolk from across the dirt road. The door doesn’t stand much of a chance against some magically enhanced stone and starts to splinter and break apart after a few heavy hits. “Hey! Knock that off!”Flanking the other side of the farmhouse, the shaman takes time to prepare for whatever is to come while Shaa provides a very effective distraction and Askr takes a more discreet route into the house. Upon sneaking in through a newly created hole in the wall, Askr would immediately catch the distinct smell of rotten food and dust. The building is dark on the interior, though he can make out a table, a bed, and a few shelves. What seems the most out of place is a dark silhouette of something standing on two legs near a few open crates and barrels near a small window. Light filtering through the moth-eaten curtain reveals something unfamiliar and otherworldly. The strange creature turns its head on a swivel. Two orb-like eyes stare at the busted-in door as it gnashes on what’s left of an old loaf of bread that’s gone bad. It has a long snout, flat teeth, and long curled hair covering its whole body. But it hardly looks like a real woolful. Instead, it looks like some twisted version of a woolful, its hair pitch black and greasy rather than the cotton-candy puffball it should be. Its face is also a bit off, the eyes too round, the snout too long, and the pupils too small. It’s like some weird combination of a deer and a woolful. As the golems bust down the door, the creature is quick to gather more moldy food in its arms and seemingly phase through the window. Taki would notice its escape as it takes off bounding into the forest at an alarming pace moments before all the penned woolfuls suddenly bounce like rabbits over to the home and swarm the party to try and block their vision like a poofy, colorful smoke screen. As the golems smashed their way into the house, Shaa hears some alarmed shouts from the road. “Hey! What are you doing over there? Mr. Phil ain’t home!” And “Hey! Knock that off!” Still unsure of what exactly was inside, Shaa frantically searches his brain for a good excuse. Ummm I noticed that his door frame was crooked. So bad in fact, we just have to tear the whole thing out and start over. I’m sure he won’t mind getting a new door. Shaa casts his eye over to the dog. He wasn’t sure, but the dog/man seemed to have a pained look on his face watching his home being turned into so much kindling. He whispers over to the dog. I know some really good carpenters, don’t worry. I’d be more worried about what’s inside.
No sooner had he said it, the herd of fake Woolfuls rush the house and immediate area in a crush of multicolored fuzz. It was an odd sensation with the mass of color in front of him but he could not feel anything to brush it away. He calls out to his companions. Hey! Are you ok? Do you see it? He can tell with his Geosense that there are only 2 entities in the house, matching that of his makeshift party. But what had happed to the entity? Had it escaped while he was being distracted by the village idiots? Shaa could still sense his golems so it didn’t go through the busted door. Something was moving away from the house, towards the forest. Whatever it was, it was getting away.
Errgghhh! The big Minotaur growls in frustration. Fine! Shaa dives beneath the ground and tunnels after the fleeing entity. The two golems, sensing that their creator has gone underground, hop off the porch and tunnel their way behind him as back up. He goes deep enough to get under the foundation of the house and soon starts to find a large root system. He must be getting near the forest. As he does, he bursts from the ground, his two golems close behind him. Did he manage to catch up to the entity? In an effort to defend himself blindly, Shaa breathes out a very special flame.

The villager's shouting nearly took Taki's attention away, but she caught sight of the strange amalgam. The shaman's nose twitched at the smell of decay and refuse that clung to the odd being, and it's bizarre appearance reminded her of some horrid experiment. She shuddered a moment, glad that most of her companions wouldn't have to see this. Hakaze bellowed overhead, having spotted the fleeing creature a moment later1 and moved to cut off it's path. Cirrus sparked and sizzled, rumbling with anticipation as they started after the creature.
"Heading for the forest, Shaa! Askr!" Taki shouts to the others inside as she sees the strange being bolt from the window. As the woolful began to rush the house, she leaps onto the wall2 and scales above the distraction. Sighting the fleeing creature, she tenses her body before launching off the wall. A moment later, the shaman shot forward to close the distance, a thunderclap trailing her wake3. The bizarre terrain rushed by, blurring the creature's form for a moment until the spell's acceleration wore off. Hoping she'd gauged the distance right, the shaman lashed her long, flexible tongue4 towards the spot she anticipated the strange creature to be in hopes of restraining it. She wasn't looking forward to the likely unpleasantness it would involve, but answers were needed and this creature seemed to have them.

As soon as he crosses the newly-created threshold into the building, Askr’s senses are immediately assaulted by harsh shadows and the smell of rot and dust, the farmhouse forged into a cradle of shadowy decay. He ducks into the darkness immediately, holding deathly still as he glances through the veil, seeking out anything more significant than displaced furniture– [1]
And lays eyes upon a strange, harrowing silhouette standing by the window, haloed in the faint, filtered light. It’s unlike anything Askr has ever seen before, a fusion of something that should be small and harmless and something carved from someone’s nightmares, and yet it is decidedly real– there’s no other way to explain how it’s sifting through the cracked-open crates, no other way to explain how it’s gnawing at long-forgotten, crusty bread, uncaring of the mold that permeates it.
Askr stays still as Shaa’s golems bust through the door, expecting the deer-thing to fly into a rage– and yet, it does not. Instead, it bundles up an armful of rot and slips through the window, disappearing from sight in an instant.
That’s… certainly concerning.
Askr is quick to jump up, slipping back through the opening he’d created in the house wall so he can rejoin Shaa and Taki, managing to catch Taki’s cry as he makes his way out. So the creature’s made its way for the forest– worrying, but… it seems they have no way but forward. As his companions run for the trees, he’s quick to follow, his steps light and quick– though he slows for a moment just for the sake of drawing Yggdrasil, letting a surge of magic pass through his palm and into the weapon itself before speeding up again. [2]
As soon as he sees Taki rush forward, lashing her… tongue? forward, Askr glances a few feet ahead of where she’s aiming, and quickly directs his blade to rush toward the area right before it, hopefully intercepting the creature if it manages to dodge Taki.

The farmer doesn’t look too convinced, but then chaos erupts and any further argument he would have with the minotaur would have to wait. Shaa’s geosenses help point him in the right direction, and after a quick swim through the dirt, he pops out near the forest’s edge and spews a cone of fire at the back of the fleeing not-woolful. The fire catches the back of the creature’s oily hair on fire, and quickly the scent of rancid, burning hair fills the air. It spots the drake swooping in from above and lets out a horrifying ear-piercing screech that hardly sounds like anything natural in an attempt to spook the creature off. With limited visibility from the very much confirmed to be illusory woolfuls, Taki takes the initiative in getting above the illusions by climbing the home which does give her enough of a vantage point to spot the burst of flame from the ground where Shaa emerges. Some of the foliage does catch fire as well, but there are also trees that appear completely unaffected by the sudden blaze. The creature continues to flee even as its hair burns away, but Taki would notice that it is much slower while in closer proximity to Shaa. This gives her just enough time to close the gap from the roof to where it crosses into the forest, seemingly passing through trees as if they’re mere mirages. Askr is also quick to try and help, but with no way to see through the cotton candy cloud of woolful fluff and no real way to know which trees are real or not, Yggrasil’s strike ends up getting jammed into the bark of a tree just next to the fleeing creature. Askr does manage to escape the cloud but is now chasing Shaa and Taki into what still appears to him as a thick and untraversable forest that is partially ablaze with fire. Their combined efforts don’t go completely awry however as Taki does manage to grapple the creature. Unfortunately, this does give the shaman the most unpleasant taste to match the awful reek the creature gives off. Also, unfortunately, this thing, though willowy in appearance, is much stronger than it looks. While Taki is strong enough to keep a hold on the creature, it ends up discarding the rotting bread on the ground and uses its oddly human-like hands to grip Taki’s tongue in return. It then throws its weight forward and drags Taki along behind it like a large ill-trained dog on a leash. Speaking of dogs, the dog that was with Shaa gets easily lost and confused by the cloud of swarming woolfuls and falls behind. Its alarmed yapping draws confusion from the locals who start shouting about the escaped herd and notice the smoke rising from the burning trees. Shaa Rhunn Shitakibo Askr Mimameith

Shaa and Askr responded without hesitation, much to the dismay and shock of the townsfolk. Enthralled by the layers of illusion pervading the town, they struggled to understand the group's actions. The fleeing oddity suddenly erupted in a gout of flame as Shaa appeared from beneath the ground with their Spirit Guardian. A greasy, acrid smell permeated the air as the entity let out a wild and pained howl towards Hakaze as the drake barricaded it's escape.
Shaking it's head from side to side, the wind drake let out a frightened screech and dusted off1. On instinct and a primal desire to flee, and several heavy beats of their wings, Hakaze managed not to crash into the ground. Banking over the clearing and away from the foul smelling being, he soared off away from the pursuit. Cirrus buzzed with little bolts of lightning, swept along by the shaman's spell2 as her tongue wrapped the beast up.
A brief look of disgust crosses the shaman's features before being replaced with a sly grin, and then surprise. The creature's strength was quite the discovery, gripping Taki's lashed tongue and storming off into the bizarre, illusory woods. Orienting herself, she quickly drew herself towards the fleeing creature. Carried along by the momentum, she threw her arms wide as she winched herself to the creature and attempted3 to wrap it in her crushing embrace and bring it to a halt.

As Shaa lashes out with his flame, he can tell that he has hit the fleeing creature. To be honest, the smell of hot burning garbage alone probably would have done it even if his geosense hadn’t confirmed it. For the first Time ! The big Minotaur gets a look at the thing. It was what that villager had said. A Wooful standing on two legs. But it wasn’t right. It would have been more accurate to call it Woolfull-like. It was dark….but in a sad sort of way. Just what in the world was going on?
Before he could get a better bead on it, he sees Taki has already beaten him to the punch and lashed out at the creature. To Shaa’s surprise, the dower creature grabs Taki’s young and continues his attempts to flee. He only has a couple moments and the creature, and his new hostage will be out of the range of his spirit shroud. He needs to stop it.
It has been a minute but Shaa pulls out a spell that he hasn’t needed since his early days of adventuring. He uses a simple but basic spell called Earth Bind. Enhanced by his spirit guardian, stones and dirt from the forest floor reach up and attempt to bind the creature with stone so that it can’t move. If he can stop it, not only will he stop Taki from being drug around but they may be able to speak with it.
Shaa does a side check and notices that only some of the trees have been impacted by his flames. Are they an illusion or just impervious to fire somehow. Still using his wielder of the true flame, Shaa uses the fire that he generated magically to shape into a mass of hundreds of small and thin fire strings. He directs the strings to shoot towards the unburning trees. if they pass through , Shaa will know they are illusions. If they stop but just don’t burn, he will know they are something else entirely.
As he sends out his tiny fire assault, his two golems emerge from the ground beside him. The big fighter motions toward to creature with a flick of his head. The two understand their creator’s desire and rush after the creature.

Ah. That’s… troublesome. A mild surge of what might be some semblance of annoyance washes over Askr as he watches Yggdrasil’s blade cleanly dive straight into the bark of one of the trees, wedged in there as true as any other strike. Even the few flicks of his wrist it would ordinarily take to redirect his blade back toward him has no effect– the sword is well and truly stuck in there. As his companions continue the chase, Askr darts toward the tree to grab his sword by the hilt and pull it from its place, grimacing until it finally gives and returns to its place in the air at his side. From then on, he turns and tries to give chase– the strange creature is… dragging Taki along by the… tongue. …that’s certainly a vision. Regardless, he doesn’t let the strangeness faze him too much– he vaults himself forward, intent on catching up, weaving through the trees with all the fluid grace that’s been hammered into him, careful to avoid the ones that are on fire. [1] …Hm. He does hope they don’t get in trouble for all of the ecological damage they’re doing. That doesn’t matter at the moment, though. What matters is pinning this creature down, and determining the nature of the woods they wander through. And though Askr doesn’t specialize in grand shows of magic or strength, he… supposes he can help a little bit with both. Keeping up his pace, he flings Yggdrasil forward once more, aiming roughly for where he thinks the creature might run next– if Taki can’t completely stop it with her strength alone, he can hopefully at least slow it down, interrupt its pathing, and give her a better opportunity to stop it completely. [2] With that, he slows his stride, glancing around at the infernal strings blazing to life around him, woven by Shaa’s hands– a clear attempt at highlighting the illusion. He… does have a means of handling illusions, but he doubts it would improve the situation. No, it would make things much worse. Much worse. For now, Askr supposes, he can be content with drawing Barnstokkr from his space pocket and whacking the nearest tree with its blade to test its realness. Not a great help, but it’s something. [3]
