As Morrigan dropped the bomb - quite literally - the charlatan hopped down from their perch on Bubbles’s back, landing on the ground a little ways away from the pandemonium with a grandiose, showman’s bow and a flourish of glitter.
“Aaaaaaaaaand, Scene!”
Their finale was punctuated by the sound of a hydra, enraged beyond its wits, saw its other heads as enemies and began to tear itself apart. Javal sprinted up to them, out of breath - Morrigan turned to him with a smile so wide their cheeks hurt. “Why, Javal… THIS was my master plan!” They gestured towards the hydra with an impossibly smug look on their face.
“Oh, why Master Javal, a bit of scheming like this is nothing.” They crossed their arms, the praise absolutely contributing to their overinflated ego. “A touch of maddening chaos to drive the beast feral, and a bit of condensed shrapnel to send it exploding everywhere. For you see, Javal, when you cannot hope to destroy a foe that seems indestructible, your best hope is to have it destroy itself!”
And the hydra was certainly wearing itself down. It was tearing into its multitude of skulls, poison breath corroding its own thick, draconic hide… and exposing its vulnerable exoskeleton underneath. They could start to see its ribs, bone protecting the hydra’s core on the inside. If there was a time to deliver the final blow, it was now.
“Finish it!” Morrigan cried, keeping a safe distance away from the chaos while Javal rallied the troops. He had this covered… right? Morrigan had done the brunt of the work, so Javal could have the final, killing blow, and Morrigan could have all the glory. They crossed their arms, still insufferably smug and triumphant while Javal and his retainers finished the job.
Man, this saving the day was easy! All they had to do was contribute a few quick and easy potions, and sitting back and watching the fruits of their labor! Maybe they should do this more often -
BONK!
It was at that precise moment a thick, heavy branch from a nearby tree was dislodged from the hydra’s horrific fighting - and fell directly on top of Morrigan’s head where they’d been standing, immediately knocking them to the ground. Unconscious before they could claim any kind of victory from this fight.

With projectiles flying in their air and piercing the beast’s side, Javal used the opportunity to rush forward, determined to finish this thing once and for all. He entered the poisonous field surrounding the hydra and held his breath raising his sword in the air as he avoided the biting heads who seemed much more focused on eating each other to pay attention to him. He rushed over to the beast’s side pulling out his lightning spear, spotting its stomach littered with projectiles revealing its exoskeleton. And among the flesh and bone there it was, the hydra’s infamous core. The source of its regenerative power is the thing that aside from its size, physical power, elemental abilities, and several heads made it so memorable. He pulled back his right hand that held his katana and began swinging around its core, clearing the flesh and bone that held it still. He then with his left hand pulled the hydra core out causing the beast to immediately stop moving as it finished tearing itself apart.
He happily exclaimed, “HUZZAH WE DID IT”, and held the hydra core in his hands, sprinting away from the site of the now-dead monster’s corpse. He would only make it about tent stops before slowing down. The moment that he opened his mouth to huzzah the poison entered his system. Caspian and Nadia managed to catch their leader while Meryl tried to help Morrigan up from their stupor.
The moon elf couldn’t help but laugh snarkily as she spotted the purple fellblood knocked out by a simple branch, “So this is the power of a purple clown able to best a hydra but easily defeated by a tree, so very fitting”.

Javal’s Herculean strength finished the job; nimbly ducking and dodging every which way, past the raging heads ripping into one another, ripping right through the exoskeleton like paper, and grabbing his reward; the hydra core. It only took a modicum of his strength to crush it in his hand like paper. As the source of its life was destroyed, the hydra finally slumped over, no more strength fueling its rage. The life drained from its eyes, and its lifeless corpse hit the mud with a grand SPLASH.
Of course, Morrigan Moonweaver witnessed none of this, considering they’d been knocked cold only seconds before. Oh, the irony.
Bubbles landed on the ground near his master as Javal’s minions helped lift Morrigan up. The Drake nudged Morrigan’s body, confused. They tilted their head, eyes glimmering with concern while Nadia Sadrine finally had the last laugh by virtue of the fact that Morrigan wasn’t conscious and capable of responding.
Oh, well. This part of the story would be receiving a heavy edit in the subsequent retellings of the tale.
But that would be for a later time, after Morrigan had awoken and realized they’d fallen to a stray tree branch of all things. Perhaps they would spread word that they’d tapped so much into their magnificent magic to slay the undying, unkillable monster that it had taken a toll on their body, and they had to enter a state of hibernation to recover… yes, that would work.
But for now, Morrigan was out stone cold, and Bubbles was left behind to worry about his master. Why wasn’t Morrigan moving? Oh, maybe this was one of their usual tactics when they encountered a dangerous threat… playing opossum! They knew what to do in a situation like this. Get Master Moonweaver to safety. Their wagon was just at the edge of the swamp… Bubbles just had to get them there! The Drake nodded to himself, as if this made perfect sense. Then, he took to the air, snatching Morrigan from Javal’s retainers, and took to the air excitedly, squeezing Morrigan’s torso perhaps a little too hard; enough to knock the wind out of their lungs.
And that was the last any of them saw of Morrigan that day. Their Drake, taking to the air, off to safety, while Morrigan hung like a limp ragdoll from his claws. And just like that, the great Wizard of the Wastes was making yet another incredibly heroic exit.

Javal slumped over all the energy leaving his body a faint whisper of, “We did it guys, look we did it” could be heard from the man’s lips before his head jerked down.
The man had given it everything he had in his body and was now suffering the effects of the remaining poison wholeheartedly. The fellblood had headfirst charged in and opened his mouth letting the airborne poison that remained enter his lungs and system.
As Meryl held Morrigan’s body a little panicked and frantically looked around for someone to give her orders, Nadia stood in front of her dancing to her heart's content, “I was right you were wrong, I am graceful and virtuous you are weak and a fraud, hahahahaha ha ha”.
She stopped after a moment realizing how undignified she appeared and hurriedly got to work tending to her master's condition. She didn’t know what it was but that foolish purple fellblood got under her skin so much. It irked and irritated Nadia to see her master bow and treat them with so much respect and be made a fool of by the purple clown. She pushed the thought to the back of her head content with the fact of at least seeing Morrigan get what they deserved.
Meryl continued panicking a little confused about what she should be doing until suddenly the drake from earlier picked them up from her grasp and flew away. She stood there shocked for a moment, a little confused, “Huh? Are we supposed to let that happen? I-I?”, before shrugging, “Eh, who cares? Not my job, I don’t get paid to care about what happens to random adventurers”, and walking towards her boss.
The group saddled Javal on Shimmer and quickly told her to fly towards the nearest town to get their master treated. The Greater Dragoonfly wastes no time and quickly zooms away. The rest of the team pack up their things and hurriedly make their way behind Shimmer following her lead. After getting Javal settled and treated by a physician nearby he stays asleep for a total of three days. He has strange dreams all of which include him losing control and remembering fighting. After waking and getting filled in he happily makes his way back to his ship content with a job well done and looking forward to the next one. He sends his friend Morrigan a letter simply recounting their adventure and saying how awesome it was.
