Vonoros had fallen asleep in the middle of an alley his asleep head against the wall as he snored away. He had fallen asleep during the middle of the day after his regularly scheduled midafternoon nap after completing a job. He was soon interrupted from his land of slumber as he felt a small paper ball pelt his head. He startled awake and grabbed his quarterstaff from his back pointing it towards the faint figure at the end of the alley.
He yawns before saying, “What business do ya got here? If it’s not worth my sleep then yer going be in a world of hurt I can promise you that”.
The figure reveals himself to be an older gentleman who appears to be a scholar with bifocals curiously looking at the triton before speaking up, “Why hello there sorry for interrupting you lad but I am in dear need of help here. I have been informed of your efficiency and effectiveness so was wondering if you would take on a job for me”.
“Depends what is it? I’m not offering to buy two murders, get one free anymore after a client ruined it with a political assassination”, the triton says, lowering his quarterstaff and walking towards the man now appearing more jolly and nice.
“No no lad no murders here all I simply ask for your help in assisting me with my scientific research. I am currently seeking more field information on a mysterious elusive beast called the Bogaboo. If you can go to the Black Bog and bring me back a lot of field research on it then I shall pay you handsomely”.
The triton stands there thinking for only a second before grabbing Lloyd’s hand and shaking it, “You got yourself a deal dude I’ll head there right away”.
Vonoros then began walking away from the alley before stopping as Lloyd raised his voice once more, “Oh before I forget you’re going to be working with another adventurer that I recruited for this project. You’re to meet them at the Black Bog in three days and work together to get me my data”.
“Yeah, Yeah”, the triton waves off as he walks away and heads towards the Marsh Flats after a couple of days' journey making no stops he makes it and stands in the middle of the fog-filled bog.
He thinks about what type of person Lloyd managed to pull into his plan, “Another assassin? Warrior? Barbarian? Hell has to be the toughest and roughest dude out there. Woah maybe it's the Specter of all people, at least it’ll be an easy job if it's any of these”, he thinks to himself before freezing in his tracks. Suddenly he hears a splashing noise coming up ahead and shouts, “Hey! Who’s there? Show yourself now before I make you”.
Quest Name: Into the Marsh
Participants: Two or more
Location: Marsh Flats
Post Requirements: 4 posts per person, 200 words per post
Description: You have been asked by Lloyd to venture into the swamp and study a Bogaboo, however, the trip has already started rough. A thick mist has settled across the region making your trip into the swamp even more difficult than normal. The first part of your task is to simply find your way. After getting lost in the dangerous bog, you need to find an area that resembles some sort of safety and set up camp. This venture may take you a few days, or even weeks, so you need somewhere safe to set up and stay at for a little while.

“ What do you mean he’s not going to make it?” Cypress is swinging her legs at a table, sipping a cup of warm tea sprinkled with cinnamon and nutmeg, when she hears the aging man with round spectacles exclaim at the table next to her. She looks over, still sipping her drink while she quietly eavesdrops on whatever conversation is being had. The man rubs the bridge of his nose, looking exasperated. “ I already paid him in advance for this research… That triton fellow I’ve recruited will already be well into the Black Bog looking for him to start the mission!” A woman at the same table nursing an ale sighs, “ I know, but that storm nearly took out the whole caravan. It’ll be days before they’re repaired— we’re just lucky no one was lost.” The older man frowns, scratching beneath his brown hat. “ I know, I’m sorry. I’m not trying to be selfish, it’s just that this research is important for Charon, and I… I wasn’t expecting this kind of delay.” The woman nods, seemingly expressing some kind of sympathy. “ This research very well can’t be delayed, Miriam— what if the Bogaboo changes its location? It could take months to find it again— years, even. This could be our one chance to find it here.” Bogaboo? That’s a funny name… a little familiar. “ Is there anyone else that we can send out on short notice, Lloyd?” “ Not unless we hire a mercenary without a resume, and… oh, Miriam, you know how many solars I’ve spent on mercenaries who don’t even show up to the field work in the end. Even if I hire one, there’s no guarantee they’ll go to the Black Bog to help with this.” Cypress sniffs, ears wiggling while she lowers her cup of tea and sets it gently on the table. “ I know, I know.” “ Maybe I should get word out to that fellow to not bother, but… bit of a scary one. Maybe he can handle the Bogaboo by himself.” “ Maybe— but they don’t make urban legends about it for no reason, Lloyd.” “ Mm… I know. I don’t know how I feel about sending a man right into the jaws of the beast alone like this. Maybe I should go out to find him...” Cypress sniffs, looking at them from the corners of her eyes with her brows furrowed just slightly. Alone? Out in the bog?
“S-sorry! Sorry…” Comes a tiny voice from the fog in response to the yelling; rather than anyone who could possibly be Vono's equivalent, a small satyr steps forwards, struggling in the mud that nearly comes up to her knees as she looks up at the stranger with wide, uncertain eyes. “Are you, um…” What was that guy’s name, again? “… Are you Mister Lloyd’s field researcher…?”
Oh, she really hopes this is that guy’s field researcher. He didn’t ask her to come out here— not really. The idea of this field researcher being out here all by themselves really bugged her though, and... she started thinking about it... What if this guy had a family? Kids like her? What if he died out here, and they never knew what happened to him? The 'what ifs' just kept growing, until she found herself preparing to head to the bog.
...Then it turned out to be AWFUL, and FOGGY, and TERRIBLE.
It’s silly to think that she could do much, but at the very least, she wants to tell the researcher to leave the bogaboo, so that they don’t just die out here alone— the way that Lloyd and his assistant were talking made the thing out here sound really bad.

Vonoros’s eyes grew slightly bigger as he heard a faint cry of sorry, he turned his head to the side. He even let his hand go from his back where he was holding his quarterstaff ready to grab it from its sling and use it if the other voice happened to be the bugaboo. His face turned into one of complete confusion and shock as the small-voiced figure he heard earlier had revealed itself, and it was…a small satyr child?
His guard was completely down as he looked down at Cypress with his yellow eyes, eyebrows raised in suspicion and concern.
“Yeah, I am, that old dude just came up to me, offered me money, told me to look here for some beast and here I am. Enough about me though”, he says in his voice with concern and worry, “What about you there little buddy, what’re you doing down here? Where are your parents? Are ya lost? How do you know Lloyd?”.
The triton had a soft spot for kids always wanting to make sure that they were alright and not in distress. If any job involves children he wouldn’t take it and would instead take down the contractor. He found it weird that some kid was just here in the black bog alone and asking about Lloyd. Then the thought dawned on him, was this supposed to be his adventurer partner? That bastard old man making kids do his work for him was just plain lazy and unnecessary.

Cypress’ tail and ears start to wiggle nervously when she realizes that Vonoros is armed, and she ducks her head slightly, trying to make herself smaller. “Um…” she gets out, but she doesn’t even know what to say in this case. She knows she’s not a threat, but she also knows that there are bad people out in the world— and unfortunately, she didn’t think through the possibility that the person Lloyd had hired could be someone cruel.
Swamp plants begin to sprout around her hooves, reaching up out of the water in furled ferns and prickly bracken. (1)
Why does she never think this stuff through? She tightens her fingers around the strap of her bag, perking her ears when Vono speaks and confirms that he is the field researcher. A wave of relief falls across her face; his voice is a lot softer than earlier, and it does a lot to help ease her nerves just a little bit. “Oh, um… I don’t have…” she trails off, clearing her throat, and looking away when she continues. “I was in the inn when I heard Lloyd talking about how your field researching partner wouldn’t make it, and how getting word to you on time would be nearly impossible, and I just… He was talking about the Bogaboo, and it sounded awful.”
She shakes her head, blinking up at Vono worriedly, “It sounds like it’s dangerous out here, and I couldn’t sleep thinking someone out here was going to wait for someone who wouldn’t show up, and then go find something so scary on their own. Are you really planning to go find it all by yourself?"

Vonoros quickly realizes as the young child looks at his staff that he may be making the kiddo nervous.
He chuckles softly, “Don’t worry kiddo these things right here’s to keep me safe from monsters like this bugaboo dude. Wouldn’t dream of hurting ya I’m what you’d call a monster hunter taking down whatever beast I get hired to”.
Vonoros is lying, although not really he was indeed hired to kill monsters whoever the monsters he dealt with were of the moral and evil person kind. Still, he wasn’t going to explain his funny little inside joke about the assassination to this child. For now, being a monster hunter was a good cover story, the assassin never tried to hide his profession but this was different. This was a young child and he wanted to make sure they were as comfortable and protected as possible. He was making her nervous as he could tell from her making the nearby plants suddenly grow at a rapid rate. He then nods, listening to the little girl’s story finding it amusing if not reminding him of himself in a way.
Vonoros then speaks up looking down at the girl as he says, “I’m sorry to have dragged you into this accidentally kiddo, sucks to hear my original partner dipped on me but hey it's fine. Yeah, I plan on dealing with this ugly on my own don’t worry about the little old me here. I’ll be fine I can take this creature down but right now my only concern is getting you home. Where are your parents? Where is your home? How can I help you?”, the triton is sincere in his concern, his voice soft and with worry very different from his usual cold indifference.

With some caution, Cypress eyes the stranger. “A monster hunter?” She repeats, processing the information with everything she sees about him; she knows on some spectrum that he could always be lying, but what would he have to gain from that? Also, wouldn’t it make sense for Lloyd to hire a monster hunter in order to hunt a monster?
Oh, but he could be lying about being hired by Lloyd because she brought him up…
Gosh, how does Astrid do things like this all the time? She blinks when the stranger starts talking again, and tilts her head to look up at him. “But, it’s really scary!” Or, so she’s heard; she actually doesn’t know much about the Bogaboo. “Why don’t you just come back to the inn? I can take you there! It’s…” she trails off, realizing that in the thick fog, she actually doesn’t know where the inn is.
…
Oh no.
The ferns around her curl nervously, and Cypress raises a hand to her lips, ears lowering when she realizes. “I don’t know where it is, actually… the fog got really bad, so… it was lucky I even found you in the first place…” She blinks a few times, flushing in embarrassment and worry; she trudged out here, just to get lost!
Just to get lost!!
Urgh…
She shakes her head, “Um— I don’t have parents, it’s okay. I live in an orphanage in Darkveil, but I’m traveling right now.” She’s so distracted, she doesn’t actually consider the possibility that this is a little too much information to give to a stranger— but luckily for her, Vono seems genuinely concerned with her safety. “Er… maybe we can go back to the Marsh Flats together? I don’t want to go alone, and... you shouldn't have to fight the Bogaboo by yourself, so! Maybe by the time we get back, your partner will be there.”
She seems a little downtrodden when she looks back at him— but this proposition seems fair to her.

“Yep, a certified monster hunter”, Vonoros responds to the satyr child in a calm and honest voice. He wanted to make sure the child had no clue about his unsavory occupation considering it may not be the brightest idea to tell a child you're a professional assassin. Her thinking he was a monster hunter would do it anyway since it wasn’t too far off from his actual job.
He smiles and looks at her, “Yep it’s pretty scary but you gotta be big and strong to face your fears. Monsters like bugs aren't really scary, just a little spooky and tricky but easy to handle with enough time and preparation”.
He turns his head as the young girl offers to take him back to the inn finding it amusing before responding, “I’m not sure about that little lady I still gotta finish the job, even if my partner’s gone I still gotta finish the job for the sake of honor and stuff”, he was lying he just wanted to finish for the sake of the payout.
His voice then returns to its calm and concerned nature, “Oh no you went all the way out here for my sake little buddy? I’m sorry to hear about your parents, I can empathize that you don’t need parents in life, just gotta have people who care. We can get back to Marsh Flats together. I can walk you there to your orphanage and I’ll come back to finish the bogaboo off. I can do it myself little buddy trust me I’m strong enough to do it”, he says putting both his thumbs up and grinning.

Cypress starts to relax, ears twitching as she gazes across the bog at Vonoros, a foggy stranger that she took a huge risk to find, hoping to return home over a silly little whim. She feels embarrassed; she doesn’t even know which way to go should he have agreed to come back; and now she has to ask him for help getting back to the inn… how awful.
She sighs, tightening her fingers around the strap of her bag as she listens to the finned man talk about the monsters.
She’s not so sure about that… but then again, she’s not very brave. She doesn’t like to take a lot of risks, but meeting Astrid has expanded her mindset just a little— otherwise, she probably wouldn’t be risking this little detour into the Black Bog. She perks her ears, frowning slightly as he speaks; admittedly, she doesn’t know a whole lot about honor and stuff…
“But… won’t your family be worried?” She chances to ask; although, his next words catch her off guard— he can empathize, and all you need is people who care in your life. Cypress lowers her ears, a grimace wrinkling her nose. “Oh,” she feels the heat rise to her face, “I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have assumed.” She apologizes meekly; but she perks up when Vonoros does agree to walk back to Marsh Flats.
She smiles sheepishly, looking hopeful. “You will?” She chirps back; after a moment of gazing between the bog and Vonoros, Cypress decides to move towards him. She pushes through the muck, mud clinging to the fur of her legs. “Um… Do you know which way the Marsh Flats is? I think it’s back that way, but… the fog’s really bad right now.”
None the wiser, Cypress halts in front of him; she doesn’t look particularly happy about his persistence to hunt the Bugaboo, but… she can’t stop him if that’s what he feels like he needs to do, so she offers him a sheepish smile. “You seem strong enough to fight a lot of different monsters, mister. Especially if you do it a lot… how come you decided to fight monsters like this?”

“Don’t worry little one it’s alright you wouldn’t have known anyways, but yeah I don’t have parents or siblings. I’m an orphan in a sense like you all grown up but I did have a family that took me in and raised me and for them, I’m thankful for even if they’re gone now”.
Swiftly moving on he nods at the satyr child’s excitement, “Yep let’s get out of here together and get you home safely. I’ll come back some other day and deal with this myself, someone’s gotta do the job and it’s gonna be me. I don’t know where we even are right now since the fog is being pretty annoying”.
He looked at the child and was determined to make sure that this innocent and kind kid made it back home. After all, he’d feel like crap if they didn’t consider they were in this foggy boggy mess because of him. Even if it wasn’t his idea it was his responsibility as an adult to make sure that this kid was safe.
“Thanks, stranger I wouldn’t say I'm the strongest around but I’m strong enough to do my job and that’s all I need to be. I fought monsters for a pretty simple reason, to keep people like you safe from them. People shouldn’t have to worry about getting attacked by some monster in their daily lives. Heck, life’s pretty hard already, especially with some of the recent events”, he mentions Scern and Vulcadreus, “So call it justice call it boredom both would be right but I won’t to make sure those monsters never hurt a single soul”.
In reality, Vonoros was double entendre for although what he said was true about monsters like the bugaboo he was also speaking for the human monsters he killed almost every day. They were the same amount of cruel and dangerous so although it’s not exactly the intended way he was telling Cypress his words were true.

An orphan… Cypress blinks up at him, a frown creasing her lips for a moment before she smiles with subtle furrowed brows. She nods over his statement; and she tries not to overthink this whole thing. Once again, though, Cypress feels as though she has managed to insert herself into something she doesn’t really belong in; she seems to have a knack for finding these moments. Thinking she can help when she is wildly unprepared for it. She is lucky that he seems nice; despite his original outburst towards her, which she supposes makes sense, because she did sort of come out of nowhere while he was supposed to be hunting monsters. “ Oh.. my name is Cypress.” She says, introducing herself in the middle of his explanation; but she quiets down to pay attention, ears perked just slightly while he explains that he’s strong enough to do his job as a monster hunter. She blinks, smiling sheepishly after he has finishes. “ That seems real noble, mister.” She admits, ears lowering slightly; if he’s trying to do this for other people, for people like her… she definitely shouldn’t get in his way, right? She’ll just weigh him down. She feels even worse about making him have to take her back to the Marsh Flats, but… “ I’m sure when you fight the Bogaboo, you’ll be able to bring it back to Lloyd, no problem!” Her tail wiggles as she smiles up at him. “ I’m, um… sorry for coming out here to try and stop you. That’s not very noble, is it?” She clasps her hands together in front of her, sheepishly glancing off to the side. She thinks of Astrid, and how brave she is to be doing stuff like what Vono is doing… she could never imagine facing down creatures like the Bogaboo, or Vulcadreus. She glances back up at Vono, “Um… when we get back, I’ll put in a good word to Lloyd for you! I mean, he doesn’t know I’m out here, but, you deserve a good word. It’s just a matter of… um, actually getting back.” She lowers her voice a little, glancing out into the void of fog with an expression of distaste.
“I know I was walking… this way from that direction, but…” She points to where Vono had called out to her earlier, but outside of that… she really doesn’t know how to get back.

Vonoros smiles slightly, “Nice to meet ya Cypress, oh I guess I forgot to introduce myself, names Vonoros, Vonoros Jedath".
He shakes his head and chuckles a little bit, he’s not used to having the word ‘noble’ anywhere near his name so hearing it from Cypress feels a little amusing.
“Thanks for the vote of confidence friend, and yeah I just know it after all someone’s gotta bring this bogaboo down. If it ain’t me someone with family or friends could be sent and hurt, wouldn’t want that now would we”.
He then pauses and holds his hands out, “No don’t worry at all alright? You’re not slowing, no one is done, not me, not the fog. As for being noble and all who cares? I think it’s pretty noble to go out of your way to check up on someone you don’t know just because you think they're in trouble. Heck, you’re even more noble than I am cause I’m gonna be honest little buddy I wouldn’t do that so you’re already braver and stronger than I am”.
He grins gently trying to show the kid he means his words, “I appreciate your kindness, and don’t worry about getting back. I’m sure we’ll be able to cut through this pesky fog soon enough. How about we work together to escape this fog and make it back to Lloyd as well as get you safe? Alright, what can you do exactly little friend? I use this big wooden stick on my back pretty well and I can control ice decently. What about you?”.

“It’s nice to meet you, too, Mister Vonoros…” Cypress responds, ears wiggling slightly as she gazes up at him. While it’s noble, she does think that Mister Vonoros should take care of himself, too… it’s a sad thought to imagine that sacrifice.
While she glances around in the fog, she hears Vonoros speak again, and glances back to him with wide eyes; it’s pretty clear she’s out of her element here. She blinks a few times, her ears simmering with an embarrassed warmth when he tries to comfort her. “I… I don’t know about that.” She murmurs, rubbing her arms sheepishly. “I could’ve gotten hurt, or I could’ve gotten you hurt! And all that’s…” she trails off, glad that mister Vonoros continues.
An odd look crosses her face when he asks what she can do, though.
“Uh…” she trails off, pursing her lips in worry. How does she describe what she does? Because what she does is a whole lot of— “I can’t really do much.” She answers quickly, ears tilting back slightly. She thought about lying, but in this situation, it’s probably not the best thing to do. “I mean, I can… grow plants… sometimes.” She looks down at the bog water, where ferns are curling around her hooves. “Sometimes I can do other stuff, but I can’t really… control it… So it's not really helpful.”

“Hey Cypress look at me”, the fellow pauses to say, “No one’s hurt no one gonna get hurt I can promise you that now, so don't be worried. What can a little bag of bones and some bog fog do to brave adventurers like me and you after all?”, he softly chuckles trying to comfort the poor kid. He truly thought that she was brave back when he was a kid. The thought of checking up on some random person for any reason besides self-interest seemed almost insane.
The triton taps his chin as he listens to Cypress speak, “Come on I’m sure that growing plants sometimes is beneficial. And as for the other stuff you can’t control it’s okay”.
He kneels to her level and smiles, “When I was your age I was a real scared kid, the fact that you are here trying to help is a real power my friend. So don't for a second say that you’re not helpful”.
He then stands back up and takes out his quarterstaff, “I believe in you kid we’re gonna get you back home safe and sound. Suppose we manage to take out that bugaboo fellow if they get in our way the better. Now where exactly should we start walking is the question here, hmm”, he says turning around to face the ever-present fog.

She glances up from the swirling muck around her hooves when Vono asks her to do so. She sniffs, gazing at his face in an attempt to locate any ounce of dishonesty when he tries to encourage her— most adults usually have a certain look when they tell you something that’s not true— but Vono doesn’t seem to have that.
Something about it makes her relax a little, even though he’d been rather scary earlier.
She lifts her ears slowly, furrowing her brows in slight disbelief. “You were a scared kid?” She asks, her voice quizzical; he seems strong, and he was scary when he called out to her at first. He seemed pretty confident, ready to fight, even… “That’s kinda hard to believe when you hunt monsters, now, mister Vonoros...”
She twitches her ears, gazing back up at him when he stands.
Still, it’s nice to hear somebody believe in you— even if you can’t believe in yourself just yet. Cypress doesn’t know how to respond, so she blinks and wrings her hands together nervously. “Yeah…” she agrees, glancing over her shoulder to the fog. “I came from… this way, I think.” She points directly behind her, and glances up to mister Vonoros for his opinion. "I passed through a few clearings on the way here that weren't in the water, so... maybe we could luck into finding one to wait out the fog?"

“Yup that's true”, the triton responds bluntly as he continues to try to look into the fog for a path forward or in this case backward.
“I used to be a real scaredy cat back in the day, scared of the dark, scared of heights, scared of plants, heck scared of even my own shadow. I got over it and I’ve been hunting monsters for a very long time now. Monsters aren’t too scary honestly you just gotta hit them in the right spots and they kind of go down on their own. It's the real grown up stuff like managing boring meetings and responsibilties that are scary nowadays”, he says his double entendre of the true monsters being the criminals he assassinated still being correct although it’s meaning differently than intended, “So trust me Cypress when I say that you’re really brave and strong here, coming all the way here by yourself”.
“Alright”, he nods, listening to Cypress’s words, “If you say it’s that way then let’s start there. Finding someplace to wait out the fog is a good idea, the most important thing to remember about adventuring is to conserve your stamina and energy”, he says, leading the two towards the direction that Cypress pointed behind her.
