The cold air of the mountains reminded Lyeth of home. Though, that was the only comparable factor. The ground bore no grass, outcrops of stone replacing where trees would lay, the few trees that were there lacked their green lush. The nibblenynh wasn’t really sure if this was due to the season or if this was simply how this area was. The kid didn’t know why the moonlight guided him here at first. The winds nearly sent him flying a good few times. A couple scary encounters had the mothling running from various predators. Though, once he finally arrived, he understood completely.
Hearthside, the newest addition of villages to the Dragon’s Cradle and current refuge for those involved in the Rise of Vulcadreaus. Shabbily built homes dotted the somewhat flat space among these mountains. Many of the people were found hard at work: Some working the land to be farmable, others supporting each other in designing roofs over the heads of other families. The big eyes of young one widened ever larger. Even if he may not be any at all related to these folk, the kid’s heart was as pure as the snow he was familiar with. The search for home can wait. Right now, he was gonna help.
It was an eventful few days for the little guy. Despite the adults not allowing him to do any of the building work, he did get play farm hand and support with laying brick work. And as the sun rose on a new dawn as Lyeth stirred awake from their spot behind the town’s inn, something about today felt different. Sitting up from his bed comprised of his many, many scarves, he took the few minutes rewrapping himself. As mama always told him, you need to always keep warm. You can’t seize the day sick. Then again, before the kid can even start his stroll to help out the fellow villagers, he needed something to eat. Stretching all four of his arms, he took off to where he remembered the local tailor was.

The sun rose quietly on Hearthside Village. Another day of toiling for the good of all. The air was cold, but not terribly so. The people in this fledgling village had been kind enough to share what they had with her in exchange for her help. To pass the time, Val had been feeding a patch of moss verdant energy and watching it slowly establish itself on its prey: a tree stump Val temporarily called home. Ah well, it would do fine without her. She focused on her immediate future. The chill in the air told her she'd enjoy a cup of tea later, after her tasks for the day. In the half-light of early dawn, Val left the comfort of the dwindling fire and began her work for the day.
On a morning like this, a warm fire was invaluable. So was a thick, wool blanket. Produced, procured, or volunteered, she had amassed a collection of them and was handing them out to anyone in need. She'd planned to go door to door first, then to the nearby boarding house with whatever she had left. Waking up warm and comfy can make the difference between just surviving and actually living.
On the sparsely populated street, each figure stood out. So it was no surprise that Valerian noticed a small, four-armed bundle of scarves appear from behind the inn and totter happily down the street towards the tailor.
oh, I hope they aren't cold. I just grabbed what the tailor could spare for blankets and warm clothing. I make sure they aren't looking for anything
Val pulled her robes tight and grabbed her backpack and bundle, together almost as much as she could carry, and hurried after the child.
"Excuse me, you aren't looking for a blanket, are you?" Val knelt, now close to eye level with the walking scarf wrap. "I was just about to distribute these, if you need anything." As she undid the wrap on her blanket bundle, she thought to ask, "Oh- and I don't mean to talk down to you- but does your guardian know you're wandering about town this early?"

Lyeth paused as the woman approached. With a closer look, the mothling appeared to wear a simple white mask and a cot tunic under all his scarves. His long brown antennae draped over the sides with short, white, and fluffy hair covering the head. He smiled, his large black eyes squinting to try and get a better look at the stranger. "I'm ok miss. I was on my way to get brekky." His head tilted, eyeing the blankets she had with her before looking back at her. "Ms. Tailor gets mad when I eat her items. I'm only allowed the scraps. Thank you though!"
The kid was about to continue off before she asked about his family. "Well... mama and papa don't live here. I'm supposed to find them but I wanted to help out first before I go looking again." He walked over, patting the woman on her head. "Are you helping people too? Wanna work together? The adults don't let me touch the tools. Only if you want to though. Wait, I need to go eat. I'll be right back miss!" He started running off back to the tailor's.
Moving to the back of the building, the nibblenynh knocked on the backdoor. There was silence for a moment before the door opened and as a halfling lady steps out, rubbing the sleep from her eyes. "Hey kiddo. Hungry?" "Mhm! I'm gonna get to work soon today. Saloan's almost done with the walls around the crop field." She handed him a stack of fabric pieces, leftover remains and unused scraps when clothings were made. Lyeth took the stack, lifting their mask a little and shoving a piece in his mouth. "Fank you!" He spoke with his mouth full. "Be safe now, I gotta open up the shop soon. Lots of folk need'n warm clothes." She pat his head, rubbing the hair a little before going back inside.
Lyeth ran back, hoping that Valerian was still there.

What an adorable creature! Val stood motionless for a moment past Lyeth's departure. Hopefully the little one finds breakfast. She had a job to do, she supposed, and couldn't simply stand around waiting. Certainly he'd catch up, if the little bundle was serious. She gathered her blankets. Struggling under her pack once again, the dryad prepared to depart.
Valerian had just began to walk on when the small knight returned, nibbling on scraps. I guess he was serious after all. "What a splendid mask," Val began, smiling. "I hope you're enjoying breakfast! Thank you for not eating the good stuff- I assume this would be good, anyway. You said you wanted to help me help? I'm distributing these blankets to the cold people of the village: anyone here in need." Val had no qualms with his age; she knew everyone was perfectly capable of contributing. Her only concern would have been the knight's well-being. He looked well-dressed and warm, however. "I'm a bit encumbered at the moment, but I like to think there are people depending on me. My delivery will be a surprise, to be fair. I just hope its a welcome one. Unless you had other plans, little one? What do you say? Oh- I'm so sorry, I haven't even given you my name. I'm Valerian."
Light frost formed on Val's hair as the two of them loitered outside the tailor's house. The little one slid a few more scraps through his mask. She thought about the fire she abandoned and hoped someone was gathering firewood for her return. Val hoped she wasn't distracting this child from more important duties, as well. What she was doing felt so small in comparison to what others were doing to help the village, but she felt it needed to be done.

The kid swallowed down the cloth scrap before speaking. ”Its ok miss. I was also gonna help out people anyways.” He tucked the rest of the scraps into the insides of his multiple scarves as he tried to sound out the woman’s name. “Vaaa… Valeri… Valerian… Valerian! Thats a cool name. Its nice to meet you miss Valerian. My name is Lyeth-“ The boy paused, noticing the cold touched hair. Lyeth tugged on a scarf wrapped around his arm, pulling it off and handing it to her. “You’re cold miss. Put this on.”
He took a couple folded blankets, putting the given scarf on top of her stack. Lyeth held the blankets over his head withcall four arms, nearly falling over from the weight but catching himself. “Ok ok! Lets go deliver surprise gifts!” He took off immediately to the first door he saw. As he ran, he skidded to a stop as he saw a man lying on the floor next to a large dog. He approached sitting the stack of blankets on the floor before pulling one off and throwing it over the man and dog. The guy didn’t move, being too deep in sleep to notice. The dog sat up immediately however, turning to Lyeth. The mothling gave the dog a little pat. ”Shh, its a surprise.”
Picking up the rest of his given blankets, he continued on to the door he was originally running to. Lyeth stood there for a moment, not really knowing how to knock on the door and already forgetting he can set the blankets down for a bit. After a good second or two, he headbutted the door twice with an audible “Bweh” at the light pain.

Val was busy affixing her new scarf while juggling her blankets and her own pack, and only looked up at Lyeth as he threw a blanket over a sleeping man. I fear I've given direction to chaos. "Shh, its a surprise." Like lightning, he was off to deliver more surprise gifts. The cold pressed in on her, and, trying to save the blankets for those most in need, she had neglected herself. This scarf did more than just warm her neck. Nyooming to the first door he saw, Lyeth warmed her heart plenty, too. The cute moth child's desire to help others redoubled her own resolve. The cold certainly wouldn't stop her- not with her new scarf and new companion. Lyeth was hesitating at the doorstep when Val finally caught up with him. He knocked. "Bweh" With his mask, of course. Oh dear. "Lyeth, please be careful-" Val was interrupted by a sleepy mother and her child answering the door. "Hello, we're sorry to bother you, but I'm handing out blankets and was wondering if you wan-"
With a "Surprise!" Lyeth explosively handed out a fistful of blankets. The kid was shivering, and the air radiating from the house wasn't as warm as Val would have liked. Lyeth had the right idea. after making sure everyone in that house had a warm blanket, the pair moved swiftly on. At the next house, Val knocked (with her fist, to set a good example). There was a distinct sound of wood on wood, bringing puzzled looks from the older man who lived there. "Surprise!" Val chimed, handing him a blanket. Suspicion swiftly gave way to relief as he donned the blanket and declared he was returning to bed. Fires were dwindling as the morning pressed on, but the mountain's frigid air was scarcely effected by the sun. If she wanted to think people were depending on her, she should be swift; the cold was pressing in.

The kid was having fun going from house to house. The saddened looks of the unfortunate shifting to ones of joy placed a happy smile on the boy, the happiness being visible in his cheery eyes and excitement. The next hour or so was spent delivering until all blankets had been thoroughly offered, only one being leftover. Being as how he didn't need it (the cold never bothered him anyway), he left it with Valerian.
As light gave way to a brighter morning, folks began to start their morning routines. Kids busted out of their homes, parents following closely behind. The little ones were ignorant of their situation, though not entirely a bad thing as they went off to play. As for the adults, the many made their way to their much needed work. There was much to do after all. Lyeth tugged on Val's robing. "I need to go help Mr. Askev with the town walls. Do you wanna come with me?" Regardless of her answer, the boy would end up marching off to the town's entrance where an aged male drow awaited.
"Morning Lyeth! You ready?" The man was a taller fellow, dressed in a thick coat and pants. Over the coat, he wore a messy apron with what appeared to be putty or some sort of glue-like substance. The mothling nodded, the session of blanket gifting giving him a good boost in energy and morale. The drow waved over to a heavy looking bag filled with various large stones and a bucket with that same-looking putty that he had on his apron.

As they worked, the streets came alive. People of all kinds- refugees and wanderers, kind souls and paid laborers- were waking up and taking to the town. She and her assistant had gotten a head start, but now morning had begun in earnest. Val's journey started with the eruption of the volcano, and she's been dealing with the aftermath ever since. Helping the people she encountered along her journey has been rewarding, but this morning has been, to her, a breath of fresh air. People like Lyeth contributed in more than material ways. They had handed out blankets, sure, but his joy was infectious, and she saw smiles on the faces of so many people who had lost so much so recently. She, too, couldn't help beaming as they worked. Today is a good day. The people here survived a calamity, but we're rebuilding.Lyeth handed her his last blanket- how sweet. I suppose I'd be a bit comfier at night if I kept one. Besides, it was Lyeth's to give away. "I need to go help Mr. Askev with the town walls. Do you wanna come with me?"
"I'd love to help a little. At the very least, I'll walk with you over there." Val didn't even know the town was getting walls. Nice! She had planned on cooking lunch with the people over at the boarding house, but that wasn't for another couple of hours. Val introduced herself to Mr. Askev and collected the same stuff Lyeth grabbed: some large stones and a bucket of putty. Watching Lyeth, she tried her best to copy him, but building didn't come naturally to her. Still, she was very happy with the way this morning went, and, with Askev's instruction, she started to get it. She'd done a lot this morning, and she'd made a friend! There was still so much to do, but every day they got closer to having a functional, sustainable village.
