Javal and Nadia make a cautionary sweep around the room to see if anybody was listening in on them as Cyran instructed. Javal searched through the room under the bed's drawers any objects in the room were thoroughly searched through thanks to him. Nadia made sure that nobody was listening to them outside and even tried her best to hear through the walls and it seemed like they were perfectly safe for now at least.
After getting permission from his two friends Javal sat on the bed next to Nadia both listening intently to Cyran. The Lord had a lot of control over the city; it would be hard to be able to find them without immediately getting caught. They had to think of something quick the more they stayed the more likely they would be caught. The villains knew they were coming; it would only be a matter of time before they’d get caught but at least they had to do something.
“Rest seems good”, Javal said as he offered Nadia the bed, “I and Cyran can take the floor”, Javal sat leaning on the wall and started to fall asleep as Nadia rested on the bed.
Javal suddenly woke up to getting pushed by Cyran and Nadia using the bed as cover for some sort of attack.
“What’s going on”, Javal says as he holds his katana in his hands.

Lightning danced across every part of the room, filling the inn with electricity. Assassin stared down assassin, lightning meeting ice. Cyran’s daggers were in his hand in an instant as he vaulted over the bed, throwing himself closer to their attacker.[1] He had to get rid of this assassin’s magic first and foremost.
The assassin raised two fingers, leveling them right at Cyran’s chest. Lightning arced through the air, raised right for him - Cyran dove forward, his form flickering and becoming incorporeal.[2] The magic sailed harmlessly through him, like it was passing through smoke. A blink, and then Cyran was no longer in front of the assassin and charging him, but behind him, raising Spell Slicer in his hand.[3] The assassin whirled around, too little, too late. Cyran was faster.
Cyran was usually faster.
The assassin, to his credit, was fast enough to recognize that he was no match for the Specter’s speed. He whirled around to face the devil behind him, swinging his sword wildly. Cyran ducked, bringing his hand up to Drive Spell Slicer into any part of the body he could reach. Accuracy didn’t matter right now. He just needed to land a glancing blow anywhere, break the skin in order to trigger Spell Slicer’s enchantment.
And he wouldn’t fail.
The sword sailed overhead, barely missing his hair before Cyran righted himself, jabbing his arm forward and slicing the assassin’s cheek. Red welled up from the thin cut.[4] That was all Cyran needed. The assassin raised his arm, murmuring under his breath in a foreign language as if to cast a spell, but he would find that he had been temporarily cut off from the source of his magic.
“Now!” Cyran called out to the fellblood, hoping that Javal would take advantage of this opening. 1. Summon: Possession 2. Phase Walk 3. Blink 4. Magic Blocker Enchantment

Javal held his katana in his hands struggling to spot where the source of the attack was, everything was going so fast. Nadia was next to him holding the bed against the window using it as a shield to block any further fire. He struggled to follow Cyran and the assassin’s battle. They were moving so fast and so efficiently that if he wasn't about to die he would’ve been impressed by the assassin’s great skill. He was about to get up and try to interfere but was confused about where he should jump in. That was until he heard Cyran cry out for Javal’s help he immediately saw what Cyran meant. He had given the fellblood a golden opportunity to get this assassin while he was busy, and he wouldn’t waste it.
He charged forward and jumped towards the assassin striking the target straight across their chest with a straight slash.
The assassin jumped back holding his bleeding chest and held his twin daggers as he was cornered at the corner of the room by Nadia, Cyran, and Javal.
Javal raised his katana at his neck and said, “This is your last chance to surrender before I’ll have to seriously hurt you".

In hindsight perhaps Cyran should have known that Javal wouldn’t land a killing blow on this assassin, even with him attacking them. Javal was the noble sort like that. Still, it gave too much opportunity for the killer strike back in an attempt to escape, like a cornered python.
Cyran kept Spell Slicer trained at the killer, shadows gathering in the palms of his hands. Unlike Javal, he was ready to lash out if necessary. It was a cruel evil, but he was far too old to indulge in the hope that this situation would resolve itself peacefully. There was no doubt in his mind that blood would be shed this night. But at the very least he could try to pry some information out of this man.
“Who sent you?”
There it was again - that cold, indifferent voice, his nose turned upwards at the cornered man. Cyran was adept at shutting off his kindness and patience when the situation needed it. It was between themselves and the killer, and Cyran was no stranger to doing whatever necessary deed it took to make sure they were the ones to come out on top.
The assassin remained silent, assessing his options. Three against one - two bladesmen and an archer, and his magic was only just now coming back to him. But all it took was one slice from Cyran’s blade to seal it away again.
“The Feline resides at the precipice of Dawn, at the place where Skyfire strikes.”
Cyran frowned. The riddle may as well have been offered in another tongue for how backwards it was. He took a step forward, knife glinting in the dim light provided by the singular lantern light residing on a nearby table. As the darkness stirred around Cyran, the flame flickered.
“I want a name.”
The assassin swallowed, staring at the point of the knife and the edge of Javal’s sword coated in his own blood. “Can’t.” He wheezed, blood gurgling in his lungs.
“Can’t or won’t?”
“Can’t.” He repeated firmly.
Cyran grimaced. It was entirely possible that the calamity of lightning had put some sort of enchantment on this man to protect his own identity. It made information gathering more difficult, but he could always extract it the magical way. He raised his other arm, still cloaked in shadow, murmuring an incantation in elvish under his breath. If he couldn’t say the name of his master, then Cyran would simply pry it from his memories -
A glint of light flashed before his eyes right at the moment the assassin threw a pin concealed in his sleeve. The silver struck Cyran in the shoulder, pain from some sort of venom lancing through his body. Cyran swore, but he was too slow to stop the boot from connecting with his chest and sending him staggering backwards. The assassin took that opportunity to throw himself out the broken window, to the ground below. By the time Cyran recovered and brought himself to the window, he’d already teleported away in a bolt of lightning.
“Shit.” He wheezed, rubbing at his shoulder. “I’m getting old.”

Javal waited for the assassin to answer Cyran’s question; he was a bit caught off guard by Cyran’s tone and demeanor. Nadia and Javal kept their weapons out but were not ready to finish off the man, only ready to imprison or capture him.
After the assassin gave the group a cryptic message Javal began to ponder what the man could be saying. This was probably some sort of coded message they’ve already seen how much control the lord of chaos of this area had over their subjects so it was no surprise that the assassin wouldn’t give them information willingly or not.
Knowing Cyran though Javal was sure that this little hiccup wouldn’t be a problem they seemed like a capable enough information gatherer. Sure enough, he heard Cyran begin to chant some sort of spell Javal was relieved that this would be quick. That was until suddenly Cyran had been attacked Javal couldn't even react in time to catch the thief he was just about to jump out the window before Nadia grabbed him by the robe and pulled him back.
“Enough my liege we have to tend to Cyran’s injury, there’s nothing more we can do about the assassin now”.
Javal and Nadia then walk over to Cyran to assess his injury from the assassin’s surprise attack.
Javal bows towards Cyran, “Cyran I’m so sorry I should have been more careful if I had captured or held him you wouldn’t have gotten hurt”.

Cyran clenched his teeth, shrugging off the pain to join Javal at the window - at least, that was what his mind wanted to do. His body, on the other hand, had different ideas. What felt like a paralytic poison was coursing through his system, making his limbs feel numb and sluggish. All he could do was watch in time as Javal attempted to jump out the window, stopped by his retainer at the last minute.
Cyran tried to shake his head, frustrated. “Don’t worry about me. Follow him - we need to know what he knows…”
But it was too late. The assassin had made their escape, and though Cyran was an adept tracker, he was of little use to them in his current state. All he could do was stagger closer to the bed, leaning against one of the wooden posts while Javal and Nadia returned to his side. He offered Javal a kind smile, one that was probably undercut by the pain on his face and the sweat on his brow. “There’s no need to apologize.” He assured the young fellblood. “I should have been careful, too.” He should’ve taken care of the target, quick and painless. But he was too worried about what Javal might think of him for making the killing blow.
He’d been so worried about someone else’s opinion of him that his blade had strayed.
Cyran frowned. That had never happened before. Maybe he really was getting old… and sloppy.
With his uninjured arm, Cyran mustered up enough strength to pull Javal in for an awkward half-hug. Despite his own shortcomings, he was relieved the swordsman was unharmed.
“It’s okay. I’m fine.”
The needle still in his shoulder was still concerning, but it was just a pin. His eye flicked towards his shoulder as he released Javal. “Though I could use some help getting this out.” He couldn’t exactly move dexterously enough to painlessly extract a needle from himself. “We don’t have time to waste. I thought by being careful and laying low we might be able to conceal ourselves from the calamity… but it seems that it’s too late. We’re already in his sights. I’m sorry.” He swore under his breath in elvish, mind already quickly moving to resolve the situation. The element of surprise was completely and utterly lost. The calamity knew they were here, and he’d already sent killers to silence them.
They had to figure out what the assassin’s code meant, and quickly. The only thing left was to strike.

Javal wanted to jump out of the window and give chase towards the assassin that poisoned Cyran but something stopped him, he had to make sure Cyran was okay before they proceeded. He turned to look over the area of Cyran’s poisoning and tried to think of something, anything he could do to heal the poison. He and Nadia didn’t have any healing capabilities; they've never needed them, usually, they never took on missions that were so world-threatening. The most danger that they’ve had on these contracts was the occasional mauling from a cat stuck in a tree.
He was pondering all the possible ways to fix the situation and blaming himself for Cyran’s injury all that was suddenly stopped as Cyran hugged him.
He calmed down slapped himself in the face and jumped into the air, “I have to get serious about this no more Mr. Nice Fellblood, they’ve hurt Cyran and have tried to kill us next time we run into one of these goons. I'll ensure to properly contain and capture them before anything else”.
After hearing Cyran’s request to help pull out the source of his poison Javal jumped for joy and excitedly ran to Cyran to pull the pin out quickly before quickly being blocked by Nadia.
“My liege please be careful we have to take our time with this we cannot have the needle break or something mess up”.
Javal calmed down a bit and sighed, “I’m sorry Nadia you’re right”, and got to trying to take the pin out of Cyran’s arm slowly.
After what felt like an eternity of slowly and carefully pulling the needle out of Cyran (which in reality was only a couple of minutes), Javal and Nadia were successful in taking it out as fast as they could.
Javal quickly asks Cyran, “What do we do now? These guys know that we’re here, they're ready for us. I’m sure some of their forces are already on their way here”?

Unfortunately, Cyran didn’t really have any healing capabilities, either. Seeing Javal’s frustration, though, made his sharp anger soften. Javal was such a young fellblood, around the same age as Cirice. The sting of loss and the frustration of injury with no results was bound to take its toll on him. Cyran shook his head, meeting Javal’s gaze firmly. “Don’t lose your head, now.” He warned. His voice, though firm, was not unkind. “Take a deep breath. The minute we get too angry to focus is the minute that they win.” And who knew how many people this calamity had under its influence?
“Besides, cutting off the limbs won’t do any good if the beast still has its head. We need to figure out what that assassin meant.” They’d mentioned something about a feline - that had to be the calamity.
He grit his teeth as Javal pulled the needle out of Cyran’s shoulder with great care, moving slow as per Nadia’s advice. Precision was not something Javal was as adept with as Cyran, but his concern kept his hand still until the needle was successfully extracted from the wound. Cyran flexed his shoulder, still feeling the effects of the poison but no longer as potent now that it was not in his body.
”Thank you.”
He couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t nervous. But Javal looked so uncertain… so unsure of himself. There were enemies abound, and Javal was right. Their survival meant they only had a limited time before more men came after them. Cyran had to remain calm for the both of them.
“Breathe… remember what the assassin said. He gave us some hint to the feline’s location.” Cyran reminded him. “He resides at the precipice of Dawn… that means we need to make our way eastward, the direction the sun rises from. He’s somewhere there.”
And it was fortunate that they weren’t utterly alone.
Cyran glanced out the window, at the ladder that lead down to the streets below. It would be better for them to escape here unseen, without getting the attention of the people down below. And across the street in the alley below, he spotted two figures hiding in the shadows as per his instruction. While Cyran and Javal had been dealing with threats, he’d sent them on a mission of their own - one on reconnaissance. A small, tired smile grew on his face as he turned to the young fellblood.
“I think it’s time you met my apprentices.”

Javal nods and says, “You’re right Cyran I’m no use to you losing my cool I have to calm down”, and he took as large a breath as he could and exhaled it calming himself tremendously.
“Do you have any idea what the assassin’s code meant, Cyran? I’m not known for my excellent detective skills or insight like Raoul is”, Javal asked, trying to rack his head around the cryptic code the would-be killer left them.
Nadia herself was pacing around the room deep in thought whatever the assassin meant it would have to at least point them in some sort of right direction.
Javal smiles after he manages to pull out Cyran’s needle and nods in acknowledgment from Cyran.
Nadia immediately perks up at Cyran’s suggestion for where to head next, “You’re absolutely right Sir Cyran that is the only direction that makes sense. Perhaps we will find the calamity herself there or even her vessels".
Javal was about to run out the door when he suddenly heard Cyran mention meeting his apprentices. Javal was filled with excitement and almost jumped with joy.
“Really? Who are they? Where are they? How are they”, Javal almost yells.

Nadia seemed to understand what Cyran was getting at. He smiled at her, glancing out the window. “Where skyfire strikes… lightning only hits places that are of high elevation, yes? If I had to hazard a guess, I should say that we’d need to investigate the easternmost places of Skypeak for the calamity.” And that was where Cyran’s students came into play.
He moved to grab Javal before the Fellblood could simply leave through the front door. “No, not that way, we need to lay low, and who knows how many of the Calamity’s minions are watching from outside?” He murmured, directing Javal back towards the window. “Come along. They’re waiting for us across the way. They are… well, you’ll see.”
There was a ladder for Javal and Nadia to climb all the way down, but the dexterous assassin merely slid along the wall before landing gracefully on the stone path below.[1] He waited for the young fellblood and his retainer to join him on the crowd before beckoning them to follow him as quietly as they could. Anyone they passed along the way found themselves on the receiving end of one of Cyran’s spells, effectively erasing them from the memories of bystanders.[2] Eventually, Cyran brought the others to a darkened alley, where two young adults in darkened clothing were waiting for him.
In the darkness, it was difficult to make out much of their discerning features. They were both human - one man and one woman, each wearing black masks that resembled the beaks of avians to obscure the top halves of their face. The young man fiddled anxiously with a polearm strapped to his back, while the woman bore an inordinate number of knives strapped to her belt, a small drake perched on her shoulder.
The young woman perked up when she saw Cyran.
“You’re late.” Her tone was sharp - though not without much heat. The blunt statement was merely spoken in lieu of a question, while she eyed Javal and Nadia with thinly-veiled distrust. She knew that Master Cyran was traveling with others, but that didn’t mean she had to like them.
Cyran nodded at the both of them, experimentally rotating his shoulder and wincing at the physical reminder of his injury. “We ran into some complications.” He mumbled. “Needless to say, the Calamity knows we’re here. We don’t have time to lay low… I hope you two found what you were looking for.”
The softer spoken young man stepped forward with a small nod. “We found a church on the other side of town that has reported some odd sightings. A couple of their members disappeared for days at a time - and when they returned, their friends and family reported them acting oddly. It sounds like cult behavior to me.”
“But I still don’t know what that has to do with this demon.” The woman interrupted.
“We’re looking for someone who has integrated themselves into a human persona with society. Someone with a lot of influence, who’s capable of wreaking havoc on the world around them. A cult leader fits that criterion.” He turned to Javal. “What do you think? Oh, where are my manners? This is Oriole-“ He nodded towards the young man, who offered Javal a friendly smile, “And this is Andromeda.” The surly young woman merely nodded, still tense, as if she expected to be attacked any moment now.
"It's nice to meet you." Oriole added under his breath. 1. Cat's Grace 2. Fade From Memory

Nadia nods along to Cyran’s explanation to Javal understanding everything he said, she was a very intelligent person serving as her noble father’s financial advisor before she left her former life to follow Javal and his sense of justice.
While Javal nodded he thought of what Cyran’s students could look like, would they be like Cyran? Cool collected and calm fighters or did Cyran already have a goofy strong fellblood friend the second option saddened Javal a bit if only for a minute before he focused back on the conversation only hearing something about the eastern part of Skypeak before hurriedly sprinting to open the door before getting caught by Cyran mid-movement.
He looked up at Cyran and nodded, “You’re right sorry for being so impatient I’m just really excited about all of this to be honest I just want to beat that calamity down and free this town as quickly as we can for the sake of its people”.
Javal followed behind Cyran slowly and carefully going down the ladder while his retainer quickly climbed down behind him. Javal and Nadia quietly and slowly followed behind Cyran trying to stay as low to the ground as possible.
Javal was excited and almost yelled an introduction before Nadia tapped him on the shoulder stopping him mid-opening his mouth. He then quickly whispers, “Hello there good fellows my name is Javal I am a simple adventurer trying to stop evil in its tracks. It is a pleasure to work with Cyran’s students. If you're as talented and skilled as him, we should have no problem getting this done without any more issues".

Javal’s excitement was quickly stopped by Nadia before it could get too loud, which Cyran was grateful for. When he calmed down, his voice was nearly a whisper, an attempt to remain silent. Andromeda merely stared at him in disbelief, surprised that Cyran would travel with someone as straightforward and naive as the fellblood seemed to be. Oriole, on the other hand, looked delighted to meet someone so friendly.
“It’s nice to meet you too!” He whispered back, excited. “I’m nowhere near as talented as Master Cyran but I try my best to learn from him. But I look forward to working with you.”
Andromeda only grunted, which was downright pleasant from someone as churlish as her.
Cyran turned to the others, gesturing for them all to gather around. “We don’t fully know what we’re up against - not entirely. But I think we should make our way to the eastern side of Skypeak and peek into the places that Oriole and Andromeda scoped out.” From what Raoul implied, they would be looking for someone with a lot of influence who could sway the minds of others to their side. Otherwise, how would the demon manage to integrate themselves so seamlessly into human life?
“Meanwhile, Oriole here will provide a distraction for us.” He turned to Oriole, a proud look on his face despite the seriousness of the situation. “A demonstration would serve better than an explanation. Oriole, if you please?”
“Right!”
Oriole reached out and brushed a hand against Javal’s shoulder - as he did, his skin seemed to shimmer and morph for a moment, almost like the scales of a chameleon.[1] When the transformation finished, Javal would be staring at a mirror image of himself, though lacking any of the confidence and mannerisms. It was an odd effect for those who knew him. But for strangers after their life, it was the perfect decoy.
“I’m going to pretend to be you on the other side of town to lure as many of the assassins as I can a-away from all of you.” He mumbled shyly, tugging on one of the strands of his hair - a nervous habit. It might have seemed like a ridiculous plan, but for what Oriole lacked in confidence, he made up for in silent skill. He was a thief, a survivalist, with fast hands and even faster feet. He wouldn’t fail at the task his master assigned him. 1. Appearance Mimicry - Oriole

“I look forward to working with both of you”, Javal says with a huge grin and Nadia bows forward slightly and smiles at the two to show her respect.
Javal thought for a second only to say, “Didn’t Raoul mention some sort of minister? Wouldn’t that be a decent place to at least find some clues? Where is that do either of you know”, Javal asks in a hushed tone towards Cyran, Andromeda, and Oriole.
Javal then listens carefully to Cyran ordering his apprentices; he admired the bond that the three had. It reminded him of him and his captain only to get slightly saddened for a second. He turns to Oriole touching him and looks puzzled only to see Oriole shift into a mirror image of himself.
“Woah it's like looking in a mirror how’re you able to do that Oriole? Is this some sort of ability Cyran taught you? Can I learn that?”Javal asks quietly, shouting.
“If you’re going to act like me then show them what Javal Zarrias’s got, don't let them even get close to you. And if that fails, face them head-on like a true warrior like I would”, Javal says excitedly.
“Or what Cyran would do my liege”, Nadia follows up

Cyran nodded in response as Javal mentioned a minister. He wished he had answers as to who or where that might be, but he was woefully unfamiliar with the religious and spiritual practices of this place were. But Andromeda, who’d scouted out the area with her drake companion Calliope, had a better idea of what Skypeak held.
“There’s a series of spires towards the east where priests seem to gather to do their rituals. I did some reconnaissance of the place and even sat in for a sermon. If you’re looking for a place where someone like a minister might be.”
“Then we should look there first, right?” Cyran nodded, putting a hand on Andromeda’s shoulder. “You did well. Thank you.”
Andromeda grunted in response.
Oriole, meanwhile, flushed under Javal’s praise. The thief’s shy blush looked rather odd on the fellblood’s features. “It’s a combination of minor illusory magic enchantments and a - a lot of training from Master Cyran. It takes a lot of concentration to learn how to look like someone else… though maybe Master Cyran could teach you if you’re interested?” He glanced towards his teacher, who shrugged.
Javal, from what Cyran knew, wasn’t exactly the sneaky type. The fine-tuning that was required of stealthy magic might not be something that he was as gifted at as he was the blade. But he could always be taught, given time and patience. “I suppose that depends on how dedicated you are to learning. But given time… yes.” But now was not the time or place. Now, Javal was instructing Oriole how to act like him, and the young thief was getting fidgety at the prospect of having to fight.
“I’ll do my best…” He mumbled, the complete opposite of confident.
Cyran’s gaze softened. “Oriole, I wouldn’t have asked you to be the distraction if I didn’t think you could handle it. You’ve studied Javal’s movements - embody them, and remember that the name of the game isn’t outright combat. Just be smart and be quick. If there’s anyone on your tail you can’t shake…”
He trailed off, pulling a dagger from his belt before handing it to the thief.[1]
“Hit them with this.”
Oriole stared at the dagger in his hands, forcing his trembling to go away before nodding. Master Cyran and Mister Javal were depending on him. “Right.” He promised before returning to the shadows, splitting the group up and leaving Cyran, Javal, Nadia, and Andromeda to set off after the calamity. 1. Javal listened intently to Andromeda’s revelation of possible location of interest, a strange spire filled area for rituals that had to be the place, right? Theres no way that isn't at least a location He thought to himself.
“Woah I wouldn’t even notice it wasn’t me. Everything from Master Ronrik’s school's sigil on the coat all the way to my earrings”, Javal chuckles still admiring his body double, “I’m interested in learning I’ll do whatever it takes I’ll be the sneakiest ninja ever! Cyran you have to teach me one of these days”, Javal whispers in excitement.
Javal whispers in his most encouraging tone able to hear Oriole's hesitation, “Don’t worry Oriole you got this! Your Javal now means you cannot lose anymore no matter what”.
Javal nodded along with Cyran’s words of wisdom, “Everything he said there was true Oriole just do that and now that you have a blade you're set”.
After Oriole left Javal whispered, “All right what do we do now? Do we go together as a group? Do we head to the spires now? Cyran it’s your call seeing as you are the most experienced”.
