Grocery shopping with Kamille has proven to be an interesting experience in a very short time. While the woman checks over produce, herbs, flowers, and other ingredients with particularly keen attention to detail, Astrid sees all the things on display as equivalent. In her street urchin opinion, if it's worth selling, it's worth eating. Over the last few days (or weeks - She's really lost track of time.), the half-dwarf decided to stay with her favorite grandma to take her up on her offer to learn some new skills. On the docket? Space magic and alchemy. After explaining how her connection to Sky Arcana was unlocked by being literally struck by lightning, learning the magic of space and time has come with quite a few different challenges. It doesn't feel as natural to her, and it really forces her to think in different ways than she did previously. With alchemy, she at least mostly just has to read books, understand how ingredients interact, and be precise with preparation. This is something more akin to baking, which Astrid also wanted to learn so she could better cook for Cantio. After the omelet fiasco that left the both of them sick, she decided she really does need to learn to cook for herself. Roasting meat over the fire when you have an entire kitchen at home just won't cut it! In her spare time, the Quills have tried to slide in their own lessons. Edgar's passion for blade wielding (and placement) is really infectious, and Astrid learned a lot about what makes a good blade from him for her own smithing exercises. The trickster Allan found ways to teach her how to annoy Edgar without getting caught - a dangerous skill for an equally mischievous child. Poe, silent as ever, started teaching Astrid sign language. Needless to say, Astrid's notebook is completely filled in just a short time. Purchasing a new one in town is on the docket. Being back in Moonveil for the first time in a long time is a bit of a surreal experience. It's the same place, but this time she gets to see it through more experienced eyes. The tavern where she and Blue Raspberry ate far too much for their own good catches her eye, and a smile pulls across her face as she points toward it. "That's the place that got real mad at me an' Blue after me first solo adventure," Astrid says. "They were a big blue wolf at the time, and we spent alla my reward money fer fightin' bandits on a big feast! But they ate chairs too! Ooh those folks were mad at me, and I got footed with the bill! I barely had enough ta get me chest paddin' fer the next adventure." In their time together, Astrid has told Kamille a little about Blue Raspberry, switching between calling them Blue and calling them Wolfe. The one thing she hasn't revealed is the secret that they're an ooze. They're simply a shapeshifting knight. Really, Astrid's dumped a lot of information on Kamille during the visit. A lot of things changed between their first adventure and their visit together. In all honesty, the girl is quite enjoying the time to just sit and let things settle and pursue new endeavors.
Who's there?- Reward = 1 Renown + 1 Claw and 1 Feather crafting material As you make your way through a local town, cries of terror ring out as your attention is brought to four large owlbears. These creatures have begun to attack the village, be it a group of wagons, a home, or just random travelers. Being the strong adventurer you are you step in to assist the locals. SPOILER: Click to hide
Quest Name: Head on a swivel Chapter: One Description: Another simple quest, fight off the pack of owlbears while protecting the locals. Moonveil village might have felt slow - sleepy even - for energetic Astrid, but still there was some interesting stories for her there if she decided to pay attention. Kamille spoke of bandits and werewolves, giant frogs and harpy infestations. The Witch really had a lot of connections, but never it got so evident than in the place she chose to place her home. Everywhere they walked, there seemed to be a stare of recognition, a wave back and sometimes they walked up to them to strike up a conversation. Kamille had provided medicine for kids, reagents for druids and poisons for unhappy wives.
Astrid brought so much agitation and light than Kamille was prepared for. Her house, sitting squashed between two hills, while much larger than it looked like from the outside, was starting to feel small with the amount of fuzz and chaos that Astrid brought. The cat - a panther that was the size of a medium sized dog, yet felt and behaved like a small kitty - was one to imediatelly get closer to Astrid, whether she liked it or not. Astrid would also learn Kamille had a fiery mare named Despair, that was usually seen striding the fields close to the house; and, even if Astrid was yet to meet him, a dragon. A lot of things have changed since they last met, it would seem.
Much to her surprise, the Black Quills seemed to imediatelly accept her into their circle, starting to teach her a variety of skills, each to their liking. She had a feeling that was bad - Edgar sure was punching Allan more frequently - but the girl seemed to be enjoying it, so she tried to not worry about it. The Witch did seem to hold her breath everytime Astrid got close to her alchemy glassware in the kitchen, but as she got to show Kamille she actually could handle things on her own - without breaking them, I mean - that seemed to dissipate a bit of the tension. Kamille didn't seem to see much difference between cooking and alchemy - perhaps alchemy was just a tad more complicated, but still - so it was only natural for her to teach them both.
When it came to teaching Space domain magic, her approach was a little more hands off, not any different from a mother bird kicking the hatchling off of the nest so it could learn how to fly on its own. Kamille had learned people had different ways of approaching magic, as she learned for herself. Despite being a studious woman, her own magic came from a much more instinctive path, which is why she assumed she wasn't thriving when trying to learn under her former Master's very strict and plastered kind of approach. Kamille was there to give directions and knowledge and a safe environment, but Astrid would need to carve her own relationship with her magic for herself.
Kamille took all the stories Astrid had to tell her, specially during dinner - and Gods did she need help feeding the child! Her kitchen was getting so much action these days, it was unbelievable! But far from complaining, Kamille seemed to love to have her food appreciated - there was always some kind of stew on the cauldron, a loaf of bread on the oven and cookies at will, everytime of the day.
When it was time to go to the village to buy supplies, Kamille would rather divide and conquer, getting each Black Quill a task and sending them off on their way. The ingredients that needed a bit more of expertise to buy, such as ingredients for potions, she would handle herself. The Witch looked where Astrid was pointing out, and a crooked smile crept up her face when she realized it was Gerard's tavern. The grumpy old tavernkeeper had a complicated relationship with her, because at the same time she was useful and solved problems, half of those problems he had were brought by her, one way or the other.
"Wait, they ate the chairs? What do you mean? Literally?"
As they stopped to talk outside of the tavern, a barmaid stepped outside, carrying a bucket and some cleaning supplies, evidently in the middle of her cleaning duties. She took a glance at them, and once again that recognition light flared up in her eyes, and the girl smiled at Kamille.
"Good morning, Miss Kamille! Gerard said something about wanting to talk to you these days... Some weird stuff happening in your absence... Again..."

Of course, fully knowing that she herself is a black hole for food, Astrid brought plenty of coin along (and likely mooched some off of it off of Grandpappy Bellighul). She danced around this subject as a bit of a playful game for herself and Kamille. It might have resulted in a couple of tickle lessons.
When Kamille asks for clarification about the chairs, Astrid freezes, realizing she's said too much. Does she tell Kamille Blue Raspberry's true nature?? Given some of Kamille's stories about oozes, she's not so sure that's the best idea. In her mild panic, she stumbles over words, and when the barmaid speaks up, she's glad for the distraction.
"Weird stuff?" Astrid asks quickly, looking at the woman. "What kinda weird stuff? Somethin' we can help with?"
The barmaid eyes her for a moment, this strange, somewhat familiar, scrunkly child. "Hey, aren't you the kid whose pet wolf ate the-"
A scream from down the street interrupts her. The singular scream erupts into a chorus of shouts and calls for help followed by strange, screeching roars from four large, feathered creatures lumbering into town and clambering on a produce stall, snacking on the various fruits laid out for marketgoers. Apples tumble across the street like spilled marbles as guards rush forward.
"Well, that kind of weird stuff," the barmaid says.

Kamille squinted her eyes at Astrid, as she realizes the little one noticed her own slip up. She couldn't be sure exactly what kind of information she was hiding and why, but she would probably have time to go after it sometime soon. She frowned as she reminded that Astrid specifically said that Blue was a wolf "at that time". What does that even mean? Wasn't he a wolf? Was he a changeling of some sorts? It got even weirder when the barmaid, who seemingly recognized Astrid, said something about the pet wolf. The lady knew the story - Kamille alredy knew who to question for it later.
Because right now, the screams have gotten their attention, much more urgent than a chair-eating wolf. The market was suddenly flung into chaos as four giant.... owlbears? What were owlbears doing inside town?
"Well, that kind of weird stuff."
"Oh."
For half a second, Kamille stands still, blinking at the scene. Well, wasn't it weird...? And suddenly snapping into action, she handed the barmaid the basket she had with the herbs and ingredients they had bought for the day, and searched her satchel for something else. It came naturally for her to try and protect the village in circumstances like that, people didn't even have to ask.
"ASTRID! Watch out for the beak, watch out for the claws. We got this. I would rather attract them outside of the town if possible. The druids give me a hard time for killing stuff on sight....."
At the same time she took out both her rooks, she also gave Astrid a potion [1]. Kamille had now a much better grip on Astrid's abilities, but still would rather take extra measures to protect her.... while at the same time, not pretending she could keep her out of conflict anymore. The girl defeated a dragon, she wasn't the one to stand in her way!
Once that was set, Kamille rushed forward, whistling loudly to get the owlbears attention, ready to throw the stone gargoyles at them.

Oh no, Kamille sees right through her. She's a terrible liar. How did Astrid expect she'd be able to pass one off on Kamille? And this lady recognizes her. If Astrid doesn't tell Kamille, someone else will. Is... Is it better to just tell her herself? Yes, that's probably better. Not now though! There's monsters afoot! Floofy... bird bears. Oh!
"Cantio's got a stuffie of one of these!" Astrid says with a slightly excited laugh. "They're cute! So fluffy! I wanna pet 'em!"
Before she knows it, Kamille shoves a potion in her hand and warns of the dangerous bits of the owlbears. The yellow liquid swishes around in the vial. "Oh, this is... um... lightning resistance? Or speed! It's a speed potion!" Kamille would often quiz her on identifying potions at a glance, something important in the heat of battle. Her studying is starting to pay off!
Without a second thought, Astrid downs the potion. Whipping out her hammer, she then charges ahead after Kamille, quickly catching up as the potion flows through her blood. "Alright, let's get 'em outta town then!" Has Astrid ever seen an owlbear? Not in real life. She's certainly never fought them, but they can't be that bad! She's fought wore, right? Right??
Astrid runs past Kamille to where the bears are snacking on the produce, much more intent on sniffing out something to eat than necessarily attacking the townsfolk. Maybe they can just scare them out! So she pulls her goggles over her eyes and runs up, calling back to Kamille, "Watch yer eyes!" Then she claps her hands. A bright flash of blinding light erupts from her palms. The owlbears groan and whine, their eyes watering from the bright light. Two of them are blinded, and the rest are now angry at the small girl.
Uh oh.

Just in time, Kamille covered her eyes to avoid the blinding lights. Kamille had also thought this would scare away the owlbears, since they weren’t exactly aggressive towards the people, only.... hungry? This situation was so confusing... Owlbears weren’t usually that forward and tended to avoid people - they could be dangerous if provoked, but would often keep to themselves.
There was something very wrong going on...
Whispering a few words of power, Kamille threw forward her two Rooks. They both landed on the ground with a few thousand times their original weight, growing to the size of two six foot tall stone gargoyles. Astrid already knew those two, Sir Prize and Miss Fortune. Kamille barked a few orders and the gargoyles were ready to follow, barreling down the street and knocking the blinded owlbears. Half fighting, half dragging, they started the process of leading them away from the village, the townsfolk immediately throwing themselves out of the way of the giants fight. The owlbears were confused, but still tried to hurt the gargoyles with beak and claw, and it was hard to say if Miss Fortune and Sir Prize felt anything, because their stony expressions didn’t change.
On the other hand, now Astrid and Kamille had two more to handle. One of the remaining owlbears let out an ear piercing scream, charging forward towards Astrid. Suddenly its charge was brought to a halt, as the ground moved beneath its feet [1], causing it to trip and slow down for long enough for the stone to shot up and encase one of them in an earthly coccoon [2].
The second owlbear remaining, while quickly bumping into the first one, shook its massive head and looked at Astrid more angry than before. In an incredible display of strength, it jumped forward, aiming to get closer to Astrid to rip her apart with its sharp claws.

Well, that's not good. With two owlbears distracted, the last two have a small and presumably easy target in front of them: a child. They're large and powerful, and Astrid is small and powerful. Aided by the go-fast potion, Astrid gets a magical dash cast and zips away just as the claws swipe through the space she only just previously occupied. The owlbear roars viciously, angrily, seeing its prey get away. Its massive size charges forward after her, so she decides to take this one out of town.
"Kamille, can ya get that last one outta town?" Astrid shouts over at her, managing to stay just out of the owlbear's reach as it swipes at her. She's of course referring to the owlbear cocooned in a coffin of cobbles. If they can get the bears out of town, they can handle them properly without worrying too much about the townsfolk getting caught up in the destruction.
One of the owlbear's claws catches Astrid's cape and yanks her back, slamming her on her back. "Ow!" she squeaks. The owlbear's shadow looms over her, and Astrid looks up to see its massive paw poised to rake across her tiny torso.

There was something so weird about those owlbears.... For a moment she looked into the eyes of the one that was encased in the stone prison and while she didn’t quite understand what was wrong, she felt a tinge of magic that wasn’t inherent to such beasts. Were they hexed, maybe?
There's not much time to think, as she listens to the sound of Astrid's cape ripping apart. The giant owlbear stands tall before the girl, ready to use its claws to rip her apart...
...before a giant ball of fire hurls into its chest, making it step back with the force of the impact [1]. Another came in sequence, seemingly more aggressive than the last, which made the owlbear howl with pain and anger.
But before it could launch another attack, Kamille's shimmering image showed up before it, putting herself between Astrid and the beast. Maybe ones eyes could be deceived, but it looked like black smoke slithered away from her figure like she was made of burning coal. And the heat that radiated from her felt oppressing, chest-tightening, as a sliver of anger started to build up inside her chest, and the very air around them became heavier, hot as the insides of Mt. Drakolt [2].
How dare that thing try to hurt Astrid!
As surprised at the sudden surge of rage and heat as it was, the owlbear still tried to claw at her: its claws sunk deep into what appeared like a wall of sand, swirling like golden dust before Kamille as she raised her arms to brace for it [3].
Before she could focus on the fight, Kamille glanced over her shoulder to see if Astrid was okay.
"Are you hurt, Astrid? Can you get up?"

Wow, this owlbear is really persistent, still attacking her despite Kamille's defensive efforts! Astrid scrambles to her feet, magically dashing away with her cape flaring behind her as she skids to a stop. "Aye, I'm alright!" she calls, giving Kamille a thumbs up. "Let's get these guys outta town, yeah?"
With that, Astrid starts waving her arms. "Oi, big guy, I'm over here! A tasty snack, come an' get me!" With that, Astrid rushes off toward the entrance of town, and the angry owlbear, offput by Kamille's sand wall, barrels after the girl. With the help of the lingering effects of the potion and Astrid's casts of Bullet Dash, this time she stays well ahead of the owlbear and dashes through the town gate past a couple of perplexed guards.
When she gets out of town, Astrid jumps into the air and steps on invisible collections of wind to climb up into a tree and out of sight of the owlbear. The confused creature looks around, then its ears perk up in a particular direction, and it sniffs the air. As if in a trance, the owlbear lumbers into the forest.
That's weird. Astrid looks back for Kamille then looks into the trees before closing her eyes and listening out to see if there's anything weird happening in Moonveil Forest. There's shrill screeching from... a man? Oh no! He must be in trouble!

It would look like Astrid had it handled already, but Kamille followed the owlbear at a distance to ensure things would be alright. The more time Kamille and Astrid spent together, the more the Witch trusted her - truth be told, Astrid was an exceptional child on her own right.
Kamille stopped on her tracks and squints when the owlbear starts to act strangely. This whole situation had nothing normal in it, but she recognized that... Were the owlbears charmed? If they were charmed.....
And then, they heard the scream.
"Come on, Astrid! Let's help him!"
Whoever it was, they may have come across the running owlbears as they exited the village. Kamille ran ahead. Usually she opted to stay behind, as she had no illusions about her physical capabilities, but when it came to Astrid, even if she knew the girl could certainly take more damage than herself, the Witch felt the urge to stay between Astrid and danger.
A few minutes run took them to one of the weirdest scenes she ever saw - and that was a huge statement! The three owlbears - since one was still in a stone coccoon back at town - surrounded a smaller figure, waving franctically at them, not unlike a mother scolding a rebellious child. Odly enough, Sir Prize and Miss Fortune were there too, but since they had fulfilled their orders, they just stood there with their blank expressions, taking in the words from the smaller guy without reacting. Just as they were watching, the gargoyles suddenly shrunk back to their original sizes of pieces of chess, and the movement brought the person's eyes back to the road and directly towards Kamille and Astrid.
"Look what we have here... I suppose it is the two of you that are standing in my way... Take them down!"
The order was directed at the remaining owlbears. Kamille raised her brow.
"..........the f*ck?!"

Astrid's fast, but without magic, her little legs can only carry her so far. Kamille hurries ahead of her through the forest. "Those bears are actin' weird," she comments, looking ahead at her gran. They're both in agreement there, but neither of them expect to find an old man with a twisted cane raising his fist and shouting in... anger? At the bears? Astrid exchanges a confused look with Kamille when the gargoyles become small again and draw attention in their direction.
Before they can ask what's going on, the man points a knobby finger in their direction, his whole body rattling with rage as his voice squawks out for the bears to attack! Magic gathers at the top of his cane -or rather, his staff- and the owlbears' eyes all light up with the same eerie purple glow. He's mind-controlling the bears!
"Oi, wait just a minu-"
A bear's roar interrupts her, and one of the lumbering beasts charges forward, a puppet of its master cursed to do his bidding. Rather than fight it, Astrid decides avoidance might be the best course here. Wings burst out from beneath her cloak, and she grabs Kamille and leaps into the air. "Goin' up!" What are they gonna do? Fly up there?
"WHAT?! NO! That's cheating!" the old man shouts, stamping his foot against the grass.
"We could talk it out if ya weren't bein' such an ass!" Astrid sneers back. Somehow, in Kamille's presence, "ass" feels like the appropriate word. "Ya want the Witch of Moonglade ta kick yer butt? Cause she will!"
"Th-The Witch of M-Moonglade?" the man stammers, suddenly reconsidering the situation he's in. Does he really want to pick a fight with her of all people?

Whatever it was that Kamille was hoping, to be suddenly up in the air with her feet dangling above the ground was certainly not it. The Witch was slow to get used to the idea of flying and only Kalaf was able to get her off of the ground - so for a moment, Kamille let out a surprised yelp.
Luckly for them, her reputation preceeded her, because she was in no shape of being intimidating like that. Hopefully Astrid had learned a thing or two from her grandma.
"Y-yes! Stop this madness right now!"
The owlbears looked confused by their sudden flight, looking at each other unsure about what to do.
"Y-you'll never catch me!"
He would rather flee than face the Witch of Moonglade and her prodigy grandchild, but the odds were not in his favor: Kamille tried to focus on her hands, and not on the fact her feet didn’t find solid land, and managed to get out a spell [1].
Below them, a dark smoke started to gather and quickly grew in size. Two bright red eyes stared down at the old man, and when he heard a low growl, all blood fled from his face. The smoke suddenly vanished with the strong winds created by the flutter of giant, leathery wings - and there stood Kalaf, a drake with black scales so polished each one looked like black mirrors.
And he looked pissed.

“Sorry, wasn’t much time ta warn ya,” Astrid says quickly and quietly to Kamille. It’s fine, it’s fine, the guy is clearly scared. Look at him running away! The timely summoning of Kalaf makes Astrid grin from ear to ear, and she quickly flies over to set Kamille upon his back.
A powerful witch on the back of a drake is truly a terrifying sight to behold. The old man nearly trips over his own feet and instead falls back on his ass, cowering in fear beneath the great beast and the witch. His fragile, wrinkly body trembles, his arms up to cover his face. He’s no match for them.
The avianbears themselves cower beneath the might of a mighty predator, and none dare approach, instead stepping back and trying to avoid looking Kalaf in the eye. With the bears unwilling to approach, Astrid lands beside the old man and accosts him.
“Alright, mister, what’s the big idea?!” she shouts, shaking him.
“P-Please don’t hurt m-me!” he begs.
“Then yer gonna explain what the heck is goin’ on. What’s up with them bears? Why’d ya have ‘em attack the town?”
“I-I won’t tell!”
Astrid hoists him up by his shirt and looks at the drake with a devious grin. “Kalaf, ya hungry? Want a snack? I bet he’s real crunchy!”
“Alright, alright!! Just don’t feed me to that creature!!” the man pleads, his legs flailing about and his strength unable to overcome that of a mere child. “The bears are people! I turned people into bears to attack the town! I can undo it, I swear! Just don’t hurt me!!”
Astrid drops him to the ground and crosses her arms impatiently. “Why the heck did ya want them ta attack the town?”
“I was performing magic tricks in town… They said what I did was fake! I’m no fake! So I showed them what I’m capable of!”
Unimpressed, Astrid looks up at Kamille wondering what she wants to do with this guy.

Kamille was much more comfortable on Kalaf's back, where she straightened up and stared down at the old man. Despite it all, Kamille listened to him speak up to the end. He was... mighty brave with his owlbears under control, but all it took was a dragon and he was cowering!
...
Truth be told, anyone would cower before Kalaf and his Witch. Kalaf sniffed the old man, but apparently wasn't excited to eat him.
"Turn them back," Kamille finally ordered, straight and simple, with no wriggle room for...
"I-I will! Only! I-if you promise not to h-hurt me!"
The day had been completely ruined, in her point of view. They were supposed to have a nice, relaxing day buying reagents and clothes and just have some tea at the end of it........
The dragon's tail hit the ground, making the earth quake. Kalaf's impatience mirrored her own, a rare occurrence for her to be out of patience. Maybe it was for the best, since the moment it happened, the old man regretted it deeply: without anymore instructions, no more words, Kalaf lunged forward, taking the man by his arm and leg and suddenly taking the skies in a powerful windwhirl created by his giant wings.
Kamille's not there to ask an old fart nicely to undo his damage.
I'm gonna give this f*cker some flight lessons, Astrid. Just wait for a second.
With his manly squeal following them and piercing her ears, Kalaf and Kamille made a wide turn over the forest. Eventually, in a surprisingly short amount of time, in between the sound of the wind and his screams, she heard the magical words.
"ALRIGHT ALRIGHT I'LL DO IT! PUT ME DOWN! PUT ME DOOOOOOOOOWNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!"

Since the bears have lost interest in attacking, Astrid lands and tucks her wings under her cloak, crossing her arms, and watching the cowardly old man while Kamille makes demands of him. But still, he’s being a ripe pain about it all.
Without warning, Astrid’s hair and cloak are buffeted back as Kalaf launches into the sky with the screaming magician in tow. She watches them soar overhead in great circles, but it doesn’t take long for the man to agree to turn the bears back to people. When he’s finally set down, his whole body trembles in fright.
“So, ya gonna do it or what?” Astrid asks impatiently.
“I’m going, I’m going!” he says, scrambling to his feet and collecting his staff. “There’s one missing, where is it?”
“Kamille trapped it in some rocks in town,” Astrid says.
The wizard huffs. “Well, I need all of them together so I can fix them!”
“Okay.”
It doesn’t take very long nor very much effort for Astrid, Kamille, and Kalaf to escort the wizard and his mind-controlled, polymorphed avianbears back to town. All eyes are on each step he takes, and one step out of line will result in probably being a drake snack. When they make it back, Astrid briefly explains what they’re doing to the guards at the gate, who seem wary to let the bears in, but they’re not being aggressive, and Kamille is here, so… Well, who are they to argue?
Finally, the wizard collects the four avianbears together and raises his staff. Swirling pink and green magic follows his motions, and he directs it around the bears. As the magic envelopes the bears, it lifts them into the air and in a flash, they’re transformed back into people, all dazed and confused by the events. Some of the townsfolk recognize them as missing people and rush to greet them.
The wizard looks back at Astrid and Kamille. “There. I’ve done it. Can I go now?”
“Nope.” Astrid snatches the staff out of his hands and breaks it over her knee before he can argue. There’s a small magical explosion in front of her, blasting all her hair back and leaving her face blackened as a result. “Bleh…”
“WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!” the wizard demands, stamping his foot.
“Cause ya don’t need it. Hey, guards! Over here!”
