It was a village like many others River had visited in the past, quiet and charming. The main and lone boulevard leading into the city circled around the well landscaped small park at the center of town. Townsfolk gathered at the pavilion abuzz with talk of the bandits that had been making raids on the outskirts of town, rustling livestock and raiding homesteads.
A call for help had gone out to the surrounding area, and a few adventurers had already arrived to offer assistance, River among them. River figured that she had spent the last few months in far more dangerous situations, and could certainly take a few days to help the village rid itself of these miscreants. What were a few bandits in comparison to the fanatical cultists she had been dealing with as of late?
From what she had already learned from various locals, the raids always took place late at night after citizens had already fallen asleep. Village leaders were at odds about the best way to handle the situation. They’d already tried to figure out where the bandits’ camp might be by following any tracks they left behind, but any foot or hoof prints had been lost or blown away within meters of the homesteads.
River didn’t consider herself much of a strategist, but she had a possible solution in mind. Perhaps one of the other adventurers might have a better idea, but she thought it might be best to stake out various homesteads in the area, hoping to catch the bandits in the act. River looked around, wondering who among those assembled would become her comrades on this mission.

Marik had recently arrived at this small village; she had gotten word from a friend of hers that they were having a Bandit issue of sorts. And the village leaders had reached out for help, and her friend knew she was more than capable of this type of hunt. As Marik walked toward the center of the village, she made sure to keep notes of a few places she may need to return to. Such as s few local shops, just a simple general store in case she needed a few supplies. A tavern.... a girl has to eat... and maybe drink. A blacksmith, she had been meaning to get her dagger sharpened, and an Inn. All places she made mental notes of in every town or village she arrived in. She continued down the main road of the village a short distance and she saw an area that was fairly crowded, at least for this size of a village. She could tell a lot of the individuals were other adventurers here for probably the same reason as her.
From what her friend had told her, the village had been getting attacked late at night. And apparently these bandits were pretty good at hiding their tracks or were just really lucky. The leaders and locals had both tried searching for some evidence of these bandits, a camp of theirs would have been ideal. But the tracks seemed to vanish shortly outside whatever home or area they had attacked. The villagers were scared, the leaders were tired and aggravated, they needed help.
Marik found a tree, just outside the crowd, where she took a seat for a moment. She didn't particularly think this mission was one she needed to try alone. To many unknowns to rush in on her own. She scanned the other adventures seeing if any stuck out to being capable to handle there own.

“All right everybody. Quiet down,” the mayor, a stout dwarf named Grimley, said, raising his voice to be heard above the chatter. It took a few minutes for everyone to stop talking and listen. “I know you’re all concerned, but now we have help from some adventurers who have elected to heed our call,” he said, waving his hand to indicate the new faces in the crowd.
“I’ve been hearing a lot of ideas about how to proceed, and the consensus seems to be that the best idea is staking out as many homesteads as we can to try to catch them in the act. With that in mind, we’ll need to break you all up into pairs so that way we can cover more ground.” Voices raised at his words, some in agreement and others in opposition. “I know. I know. Hey, we’re working in the dark here. All we can do is try.”
Grimley looked out at the crowd, picking out the non-locals. “You and you. You’re one group,” he said, pointing to two humans standing next to each other. He continued to pair people up that appeared to be together. Lastly, he pointed to River, and hesitated, searching for who to pair her up with. “Oh, over there, you, young tiefling. Will you pair up with her?” he asked, addressing Marik.
River turned to her new comrade, and nodded, moving over to stand next to the tiefling. “Hello, I’m River. Ready for a little bandit hunting?,” she asked with a slight grin.

Though Marik was not thrilled whatsoever with the thought of someone else choosing who she would go into a possible dangerous situation with. She also knew there had to be some kind of order to this, or else it would get chaotic and more damage than good would be done. She decided to go along with dwarfs' instructions, hoping her comrade would be able to handle their own and not slow her down.
Plus, this way they could cover more ground and hopefully find these bandits sooner.
She watched as he paired off everyone, most looked like they had traveled here together anyway. The list of possible individuals she would be paired with got shorter she started really paying attention to was left. It came down to a rather tall half-elf, with green hair. Though most were tall when you barley hit the five foot mark.
The half-elf walked over to where Marik was now standing and introduced herself.
Marik smirked back, "Defiantly, The names Marik." Everyone at this point had moved over to wherever their comrades where and were talking amongst themselves. Unsure if this mayor already had a strategy or if he was just going to leave it to the adventures themself to figure. He at this point was talking amongst a small group of what she assumed were other people of leadership roles in the village. Marik sat back down against the tree and pulled out a small map of the general area. She motioned for River to have a seat, so they could possible discus strategy, or at least where to start. Marik laid the map out between the two, "So I only have basic information on what's going on from a third party, they didnt know much either. What do you know? And any ideas where to start?"

River frowned. “Yeah, not much to go on. I suppose we take our chances. Pick a homestead to stake out and see what happens.” Marik agreed, and the two of them spoke with Grimley to determine which homestead they should watch. Directions received, the two adventurers set out a few hours before sunset.
As they left the village, River watched the other non-locals moving off in different directions. A shudder of worry spread through her. Were any of these supposed adventurers actually one of the bandits? Was their tactic now known by the miscreants? River shook her head, pushing away such thoughts. She had to assume the bandits were not surveilling the town, otherwise the plan was a failure before it even started. River would keep vigilant for a possible ambush, but she was determined to proceed with the plan.
An hour or so before sunset, Marik and River found themselves hiding in the trees at the outskirts of a charming small homestead. River felt slightly uncomfortable as they spied upon the family buckling down for the night, feeding and securing their livestock and stabling the mules. River turned to her companion and whispered, “Might as well get comfortable. It might be hours before anything happens.”
Another hour passed, and besides the occasional whimpering of the mules, the night was quiet and still. It wasn’t easy to remain vigilant at all times the longer they watched, but River tried to keep her gaze roaming the perimeter of the homestead. Suddenly, she noticed movement, much larger than the small creatures she had seen scampering about throughout the evening.
River stilled. On the other side of the homestead, large shadows moved toward the stable. Her hand tapped Marik’s shoulder, pointing toward the dark forms, and she mouthed, “Over there.”

After finding a nice hiding spot, they settled in for more than likely a long wait. The part she despised most of all in her usual line of work... waiting. She looked over the small area of land, a house that held a small family, just going about their normal day. As the two watched over them so to speak, she tried not to think about how this was kind of violating the innocent family. Two young children played in the field while she assumed the father tended to some animals, she saw the mother come out a few times and check on them while she tended to whatever she needed inside. Just your stereotypical small family, living their life. The sun started to set, and she eyed the perimeter of the homestead, making sure to keep a close eye on the tree lines. She figured if these bandits were going to strike, they would come from a more hidden area. The sun at fully set, it had been quite when Marik felt a tap on her should. She looked up at River who mouth to her and point towards the stables. She noticed more movement in the area then just animals would be making. The two watched a few moments longer, a mixture of making sure they were seeing it correctly and to stake out exactly what these figures were doing. The moonlight hit the figures just right and she saw the two figures, who had some kind of weapon out clearly sneaking where they weren't supposed to be. She looked over at River and nodded, both started to make their way towards the figure's weapons drawn ready for whatever was about to happen.

As they watched the dark figures approaching from the shadows, River and Marik began stealthily moving toward the outbuildings and finalizing their plan. “ I’m going in invisible, so I should be able to get the jump on them. And then you can enter the fray after,” River whispered. With a quick nod and a wink, River took a deep breath. As she let out her breath, a sparkling shimmer began moving around her, causing her body to become transparent and nearly impossible to see (1). Marik might have noticed a hazy movement when River waved as she disappeared. Now virtually invisible, River moved quickly to intercept the unwelcome visitors who were already making their way through the doorway of the animal shed. River quietly entered the stables after them. The interior of the stable was dark, lit only by the scant moonlight that filtered through the cracks in the planked walls. Luckily River had dark vision (2), and she could see the bandits clearly. The two of them were already in a stall attempting to corral and harness a large gelding bay who was bucking and whinnying anxiously. River hesitated, not sure whether she should attack while they were fooling with the uncooperative horse or not. Deciding to wait until they had the horse under control, River situated herself in a spot out of their direct path. Over the horse’s cries, the sound of approaching footsteps could be heard. Assuming it was Marik, River turned to look. Instead of seeing her new comrade however, two more bandits strode into the stables, bold as brass. Who did these miscreants think they were? she thought with irritation. The two newcomers started grabbing tack and stuffing them into their large packs. Now faced with four enemies, River took out her bow and notched one of her special arrows into the grooves. She knew that as soon as she attacked, she would become visible for a moment, so she moved into the shadows before attacking. Drawing her bow string, she aimed at the nearest man not engaged with the horse. A slight whistle could be heard as she let loose of the arrow. It struck true into the bandit’s back, streaks of lightning crackling from its tip. The man fell to the ground, not only cut but paralyzed [for one post] from the shocking lightning energy of the bolt (3). The other bandits stopped what they were doing for a moment, and looked around in confusion, not quite sure where the attack had come from. River took the opportunity to notch another arrow into her bow, and prepare to fire again.
(1) Invisibility (2) Dark Vision (3) Lightning Rune (arrow enchantment)

Marik moved towards the stable, she had spotted a window at the back of the stable. It was open with no glass, she looked over into the stable. There candles scattered thru out the stable, but there was enough shadow she should be able to stay hidden. She quietly climbed in and dropped down on the other side, one of the bandits was wrestling with a horse trying to get to calm down. She watched from the shadows, dagger in hand waiting for the right moment to attack. She saw an arrow shoot out of the shadow and hit one of the bandits, he went down and didn't look like he was getting back up for a moment. The others stopped and started looking around trying to figure out what was happening. With confusion, she took the time to attack. She thru her dagger at the bandit closest to her, it struck him in the side. As soon as the dagger left her hand, she started moving thru the shadows again. Hoping to confuse them even more. The bandit doubled over and pulled the dagger and thru it to the side. She made mental note to of wear it landed so she could grab it. She watched as the bandits started freaking out again, trying to figure out where everything was coming from. She unsheathed her Katana preparing for her next attack.
