Ray held back the magic that wanted to spring forth a barrier around himself, it was better to give them the feeling of control he'd taken years prior. The lordling seemed very much like that little boy who'd come rushing in full of righteous emotion ten years ago. The tears again filled Ray's eyes, another family seemed to be ripping away from his heart, one he'd not even truly had the chance to know.
"I was a different man, the guilt was killing me, it still is to this day... only less so." He didn't fight back and simply allowed the lord to hold him there while looking into the pained expression on his face.
Nathander appeared before them soon after, unarmed as requested with vanguards on either side.

Sarne had forgotten that Ray had other than healing powers as he felt the resistance of magic. Sarne released Ray and lowered his dagger. Patting Ray on the chest with his hand is almost like an apology. "We are not done yet discussing this, Ray," said Sarne in a more calm voice.
Turning around and walking towards the three men standing by the door. Sarne stopped and picked up his sword and sheath it.
He looked at Nathander and thought then looked him in the eyes. "Am I not the young Lord of Gray Rock of the house of Sequoia?" Sarne paused to let that statement run through the man's mind. "You dare to take up arms against someone in my house someone employed by me?" Sarne looked back at Ray then back at Nathander. "This is a family matter that will be dealt with in the Family. If you ever threaten or even attack anyone I am in my charge of without asking me I will deal you the same punishment" warned Sarne.
Sarne looked at the two vanguards and Nathander "Do I make myself clear?" asked Sarne.

The young man stood before the men and looked Sarne in the eyes. He nodded and then quietly added, “She is my family too.”
He was ready for a backhand from Sarne or one of the guards. Sarris had been teaching them that because of the training, discipline came hard and quick. Even Sarris knew when not to push her luck. She also got away with a bit more than she should at times. But open defiance was reserved for Grandfather and was not done publicly.
Sarris started to pull herself together. She would deal with it all when the quiet of the night came. She laid cuddling her charge.

"I see, Nathander, let me say it like this. It is an internal family problem" explained Sarne his tone sharp to get his point across. "Master Ray is in my charge I will deal with him. I understand your position. If you wish to challenge me on this. You can go to my father and issue the challenge." said Sarne in a way more like a warning.
Sarne looked at Ray one more time then back at Nathander. "I am not ageist you. This is just something I must deal with. Just go and I thank you for looking out for Sarris. Now leave me with Master Ray I have much to talk about." said Sarne.

As Nathander finally relented and exited, the door was closed behind him. The now far less violent Sarne was standing with a look of refined anger that seemed ready to bust loose at any moment. It had surprised him that the lordling spoke of him as a charge still, he was certain he'd be kicked out for this one. Discussion seemed far too civil a word for what Ray expected.
"Young Lord, I am willing to endure punishment for the actions of my past. Though I can do no more than I currently do to strive towards redemption." Ray was rubbing the book at his hip to calm himself.

Sarne was quiet just looking at the ground. He looked up at Ray. "The feeling of betrayal is an understatement. But I must also see what your path is now. That you did not know it was Sarris and me that day. The fact you gave Sarris a dagger so she could escape and you did not try to kill me that day or the other Man." explained Sarne looking at why he did not just kill Ray.
"By law, I could drag you be for my Father or worse my grandfather, and have you tried. The other side of that coin is I can pass judgment on you here. But as a noble, I will be judged for my actions good or bad as a noble." said Sarne as he crossed his arms. "Master Ray, you have put me in a bad position. Sarris has nothing to worry about. but I do and how all this will look my reputation could be ruined." said Sarne making sure Ray knew the gravity of the situation.
Sarne mumbled to him self looking down at the ground "Valor, chivalry, honesty, and compassion are my family traits and what we built the Vanguard oath on. Compassion and honesty stick out here in this situation." said Sarne quietly thinking out loud.
"Master Ray my judgment in this matter is as follows you are on probation. If you do anything out of line you will be brought before my father or me for punishment. Wich will be severe. you will not be confined but will let me know where you are going or someone like Sarris or Vanguard Captian. If you agree to the terms I consider this matter closed. Now it is Sarris you must deal with and I hope she can forgive you" said Sarne with a slight smile.
Sarne paused looking at Ray " I know it will take me time for that but this is a good start on your path to redemption" finished Sarne.

Nathander walked away, unsure. He looked back at Ray unsure of what to think and with a confused look. Nathander did not know who his target was. Sarris had not say anything she just cried. Attacking a healer would probably be a death sentence as they were so important.
As he walked out one of the Sargents grabbed him by the collar. “You can’t fix this, boy,” he said. “Trying to steal can shorten your life. I suggest you talk to Lord Sarne about possible opportunities to make something of yourself,” he said.

Ray's fears had been misplaced. The Young Lord was full of surprises, still yet. He'd never taken himself as the type worth forgiving, how could others do so when he was entirely unable to? The lord's terms were more than reasonable, probation would be no problem as long as no misunderstandings arose. He walked over to the Young Lord and reach his hand out towards Sarne.
"I accept your kind offer, Young Lord. I'll do what I can to make myself of this chance offered." He gave a deep nod to Sarne.
"Now...Off to the hardest task, comforting someone..." Ray gave a long sigh at this.
He began to walk out the door and noticed Nathander being picked on by the vanguard. As the man let him go Ray managed to catch his attention before he ran off.
"Nathander! I want you to know this. The courage you showed rushin to Sarris' defense was noble. Learn to use that, within your limits, and you'll be proud of what it does for you..." He patted the boy on the back. The way Nathander reacted to his family's pain was how Ray wished he had reacted when his family was killed, that sort of action should be praised and refined.
"Say boy, where's Sarris? I need to do my part now."

The lad looked at Ray grateful for the advice but unsure about bringing Ray to Sarris. “She might not take kindly to you,” he said as a bit of a warning. He shifted a bit not sure if he should say something more or not. It was obvious that the boy was more than just an admirer of Sarris.
Nathander said to Ray, “She takes care of us orphans and nobody hurts us.” “The Lord takes care of her, but he ain’t seen all the troubles she’s gets into,” he said as a weak explanation.

Sarne followed out Ray seeing the Vanguard soldier and Nathander. Sarne shook his head. "will this day ever end." he mumbled. Sarne turned to the Vanguard soldier "Go easy on him unless you want to deal with Lady Sarris" said Sarne walking by.

The knight gave Lord Sarne a salute and frazzled the boy’s hair. Nathander sighed then brought Ray to the barn. “Adults,” he mumbled. ”They just do not understand what it is like being an orphan,” he thought.
He led him to the barn. It was in need of some repair one wall needed some mason work. Stalls became rooms. The loft was Sarris’ space and she had pumped the ladder which meant a climb. The floors wince inside the doors were swept and there was a stone hearth
Blankets were over the stall walls where the children slept. The hey in the stalls was dry and fresh.
He pointed to the loft and went and laid down.

Before they left the clinic, Ray went back inside and picked up the blade she'd dropped. It was definitely the same one he'd lost all those years ago, didn't even seem like it had been sharpened in a long time. The stain of Sarris' blood on the blade made the patina look even darker.
Maybe he could offer to sharpen it for her, renew the edge and make it hers... maybe even a new sheath or handle... he'd make the offer at least. His own sword wasn't the one he'd fought with as a bandit, sometimes a change was good for the mind.
As Nathander led them into the barn and went to lie down Ray was taken by the conditions, rough, yet cozier than any he'd had growing up. These people were doing better than almost any settlement on charon for orphans.
Instead of climbing to the loft immediately Ray looked to Sarne, he knew her better. Plus, Ray was never good at handling emotions...
"Any ideas how I should do this, Young Lord...?" He whispered.

Sarne stopped and looked at Ray. "First, just be straightforward with her with your regret and how you feel about it. Second Food she likes food bring enough for the kids there. Maybe some juice for them they don't get much of that and Ale for the two of you. Talk it out with her not two say she will talk ight now but that might help." advised Sarne with a smile.
Sarne looked at the Vanguard standing around "OK back to work I think you for coming and being there for me." said Sarne in appreciation for them.

Nathander made a comment, “Food would help, in agreement. She would rather starve to make sure we eat.” His tone conveyed some concern and he said it as much for Sarne to hear.
A rock came flying from the hay loft and bounced off the stall boards where Nathander was laying. He throw was fairly accurate and rattled off a couple boards. She missed him. Nathander gave the men a look for good luck.
“I do not need food,” she growled from above.

Ray took that as an indicator that food would be a good idea. He still had a couple of pastries left from an earlier outing and had kept one in his robe pocket to eat for lunch. He took it out and unwrapped it from the cloth with deft movements of his left hand. He climbed one rung of the ladder and placed the food on the ledge tenderly.
"Sarris, I regret deeply everything that happened that day... I'll do whatever I can to make it up to ya..." He wasn't really sure how to apologize for something so far in the past, apologizing was something he usually did with actions instead of words...
"I can sharpen this old knife, maybe even getcha a new sheath or somethin, make it less the knife from ten years ago and more the knife you carry today?" It seemed a good idea to him, he'd left his favored blade behind when he left banditry.
