No matter what the job is, Raoul would always take it as long as the solar payment was worth looking at. And boy that sure did put him into some really dangerous business sometimes far over his head. Today was no such exception as he walked through the muddy Marsh Flats, worriedly going over information about his mission. He’d taken up a job posted by a village near the flooded road, where instead of the usual criminals the dhampir dealt with he was going to be facing a whole swamp hydra. A menacing beast who had taken up residence in the town’s storehouse greedily consumed anything and everything around it. He was completely terrified at the prospect and thought about just letting someone else take it up but he couldn’t. The reward of Solars was way too great to just miss out on even if he wasn’t exactly strong enough to take on a swamp hydra. That was okay though, he thought to himself, he didn’t need to be stronger than a swamp hydra, he just needed to be smarter than a swamp hydra.
He had some decent firepower in his arsenal to hopefully stop its regenerative ability and was fairly stealthy so as much there was a pit of anxiousness and nerves in his stomach he had a decent shot at it. After going over all the information he had on Hydras he placed his notebook back into his bag and increased the pace of his stride with the village already coming to his sight.
Quest Name: More than we Need
Participants: Two or more
Location: Marsh Flats
Post Requirements: 6 posts per person, 200 words per post
Reward: +1 Renown, Choice of 2 Common crafting materials

The creature has made its nest in the storehouse and has been running people out of town, completely taking over a section of the village. They are requesting help from adventurers, who have been asked to go in and remove the hydra in whatever way they see fit. The locals do request, however, that those who challenge the hydra try keep as much of the village intact as they can, moving the hydra out of the village and away from homes.

These villagers really knew how to complain. Nonstop, Hylltywyll listened as one person after the other threw out vitriolic words words about the weather, how long it took adventurer's to get to this place, the brat kid who lives next door and won't stop stealing from their garden, the price of bananas, their favorite pair of earrings going missing that Hylltywyll definitely had nothing to do with, and most of all about that damn hydra living in their storehouse, eating all their food.
Now, that was something Hylltywyll wanted to hear more about. He had never seen a hydra before and was very interested. They sounded powerful, being able to regrow their severed heads and grow more heads as they aged. This one was apparently still young, only having three heads, but those three heads were still quite dangerous. One could breathe fire, one ice, and the last one lightning. Very dangerous indeed.
Hylltywyll wanted to know how it could breathe three different elements, all from a different domain of magic. Maybe if he could figure that out, he could gain better mastery over the earth, sea, and sky domains. He was already as powerful as anyone could be with light, dark, and space, but the natural elements illuded him. For now.
But, according to the villagers, there was already an adventurer on his way here to remove the hydra. Hylltywyll waited to see who it was, hiding in the leafy canopy above the swampy ground, watching. It looked like that adventurer was arriving as a lone figure walked through the marsh toward the village.

The dhampir approached the village with a warm smile waving towards some townsfolk at the city gate, “Hello ther-” but before he could even say another word one of the elderly villagers shushed him and took his hand quickly guiding him deeper into the city. The sounds of slurping and popping would get louder and louder through the townsfolk stopping a few houses before the hydra pulled Raoul inside and gathered around a table.
“Alright listen here everyone this pale and weird-looking fella is gonna save our town from the hydra”.
She’d motion for one of the villagers to come forth presenting the dhampir with a large bag of solars.
“We’ve all pitched in and gathered enough funds to pay you, you’re the only one to answer our call. For the danger level and size of our village, no one thinks it’s worth it but you’ve stepped up and we’re counting on ya. Not sure exactly how you’re gonna be getting rid of that beast but eh you’re an adventurer I’m sure you’ll figure something out”.
Raoul grinned very widely as he placed the bag of solars into his pocket, focusing his attention back on the conversation, “Of course don’t you guys worry about a thing, your supplies and food storage should be free from terror in no time. You’ve hired Raoul O. Ardelean and now that you guys have given me your payment it’s my sworn obligation to finish this job no matter what”.
He then stepped outside and leaned against the building’s wall as he began to think things through. This was certainly going to be an impossible mission to complete especially by himself but he just had to make the most of his situation. He glanced around trying to place together some sort of plan, perhaps he could build something or place a trap for the beast to bind it.

Hylltywyll was a bit disappointed. Following along stealthily as the man was guided through the village by who he could only assume was some elder, he took in the sight of the man and frowned. A bit of earth domain magic, but it was weak. Novice level. And it was the only domain he possessed. He also didn't look particularly strong. This was the guy that was hired to fight a hydra?
The Fae silently grumbled to himself. If this was the best the village could find, it was no wonder they were having such a hard time with the hydra. He could understand more powerful adventurers not finding the beast worth their time. Hydras were dangerous even young, and this one was young. It wouldn't provide much in the way of materials and the poor village couldn't pay much. The danger outweighed the rewards. That this guy actually accepted the job showed he was either an idiot or too nice for his own good.
He was hoping whoever they hired could handle it himself and he could sit back and wait for them to finish dealing with it before he came and took what he wanted from the creature, but it was looking like he would actually have to help in this fight, and coordinating would make that much easier.
"So, do you have a plan?" A small, scrunkly voice sounded out from above as Hylltywyll looked down on the adventurer, his fingers and head peaking out over the roof of the building he was leaning against.

As Raoul leaned back against the wall his finger on his chin deep in thought about how in the heck he was going to defeat a hydra, a small shrill voice broke him out of thoughts. His eyes darted wildly around the area, the dhampir didn’t see anyone that the voice could’ve been. He was the only one there at least it seemed but the voice rang out above him so Raoul stepped back a few feet and looked towards the roof quickly spotting some fingers and a strange-looking head peeking out from it. It was some sort of dark furry creature with large blue eyes staring back at him.
The dhampir quickly jumps back, in total surprise before trying to compose himself and taking a good look at the individual. He couldn’t really tell what he was looking at, some sort of demon. Imp? Possibly a Fairy or Fae creature? All he could tell was this fellow certainly seemed like an odd sight right now.
“I’m sorry, who are you and why are you here?”, Raoul questions the mysterious individual, “As for my plan, your guess is as good as mine to be honest. I kind of just took the job and thought I’d figure it out when I was here. I mean I’m not skilled at hunting monsters but it’s not impossible to beat it. Maybe I can set up some traps around the town or lead it away with some really good food?”.

Hylltywyll was amused, chuckling lightly to himself as Raoul jumped back in surprise. Just because he had a mission to complete here didn't mean he couldn't have a little fun, and he enjoyed making people jump. This guy really didn't seem strong enough to fight a hydra if that was enough to take him by surprise. Hyll hadn't even been using his magic to hide in the shadows. The prospects of this guy actually being useful were looking bleak, but he was pretty much the only option.
"My name is Hylltywyll. I know you're here to deal with the hydra. I can help with that... For a cut of the reward money." Hylltywyll answered with a toothy grin.
He might be getting greedy asking for some of the reward money when he already had his own prize to gain from this, but what was the little gremlin if not greedy? And, there were other reasons for doing so. In a place like this, is was far less suspicious for someone to demand a fee for their services than to offer them freely from the good of their heart. When dealing with Fae, it was much safer to have the price laid plainly before you than to have it unspecified. Of course, he hadn't specified what his cut of the money would be yet.
Knowing he had no plan and just thought he'd figure it out when he got here... honestly, didn't surprise him. It did, however, lower his expectations of the man's abilities even more.
He nodded along in thought and shrugged. "Traps could work. I don't know what food you could offer it that it doesn't already have in that warehouse. Well, I'm not here to give you free advice. Do we have a deal? Reward money in exchange for my help?"

“Well it’s nice to meet you Hylltywyll, and yes I’m here to try to take the hydra. So, you’d be willing to help me out for a price, huh? Hmmm, that’s not such a bad idea, I mean two pairs of hands are way better than one so why not? As for half of the reward money, although it pains me to part with it I have no other option with such a tough mission here you go”, he’d reach into the bag of solars and dump half of its contents into his pockets. Raoul would then throw the rest of the bag up towards Hylltywll hoping he’d catch up from up on the roof.
“We have a deal from here on out you’re going to help me with taking care of the village’s hydra problem. I’ve given you half of the payment and now hopefully with your power we should be able to take it down”, the dhampir would confirm agreeing to the terms of their deal. Sure it was a very shady situation he’d gotten himself into but at this point, he had no choice, he was alone, and as weak as he was, receiving the power of a mysterious individual like this might result in good things.
“So Hylltywyll, what do you have in mind to help me? What’s your deal exactly, are you an imp, demon, or fae? How can we take a hungry hydra away from this place without causing serious amounts of property damage if possible?”, the detective would question curiously.

Hylltywyll caught the pouch of coins with an amused smile. He had said he'd help for a cut of the reward, but never specified how much of a cut. The man giving up half the payment straight away without even trying to haggle really showed he must have no clue what he's doing. Or he's just really bad with money.
Hylltywyll tossed the pouch into his shadow, the coin disappearing as if it had fallen through a dark hole in the roof he was perched on. He didn't really care much about money himself. His only real interest in it was how shiny the gold coins were, making them a nice filler for his hoard of sparkly trinkets and baubles. He didn't need to spend them when he just stole whatever he wanted.
"I have an idea for removing the hydra from the warehouse." Hylltywyll said as he climbed down from the roof and walked past Raoul. He stopped for a moment beside Raoul and gave him a pat on the back of the leg before speaking again. "You, just go find a good spot to fight it. Somewhere in the swamp, outside of the village should do."
With that said, he scurried off toward the shed, leaving Raoul to go find somewhere. Raoul likely didn't even notice the black handprint on the back of his leg where Hylltywyll had touched him, like a stain of ink on his pant leg.

“An idea you say?”, the dhampir would question as he looked up and watched the strange mysterious fellow climb down and walk past him. The creature appeared much smaller than he thought it was more fitting with the description of a shadow fae than an imp or demon. Hylltywyll would pat his leg leaving Raoul quite confused looking around as he bid him farewell leaving him with ominous words of a plan.
“Oh well okay then? I can do that, I’ll see you there hopefully?”, he’d say, standing around for a moment trying to figure out what just happened.
The thought crossed his mind that this might all just be a dream or some sort of strong illusion magic, but after pinching his hand he confirmed that this was real. Part of him even though that Hylltywyll might’ve just taken his money and ran off not intending to help but he pushed that to the side just deciding this was his best shot at stopping the hydra.
After getting his bearings Raoul quickly runs outside the village towards the dangerous swamplands. He could feel the murky water seep into his boots as he rushed to find a good spot to wait for Hylltywyll. The dhampir just stood there waiting holding his hands in his pockets and tapping his foot on the swamp floor hoping against hope the strange fae creature was making something happen soon.

It didn't take long for Hylltywyll to put his plan into motion. With the little Fae skulking through the shadows, he used a touch of magic to open up a hole in the back of the warehouse and and walked right in beneath a shelf of jarred foods. It looked like the hydra had mostly ignored the jars after breaking a few and getting mouthfuls of glass or ceramic shards. Instead it had focused on eating all of the preserved meats and sacks of grains. It also didn't look like it cared whether or not the inside of what it thought of as its new nest was well lit or not, which made it perfectly easy for Hylltywyll to slink right up to it undetected and lightly place a hand on its tail.
The hydra's three heads turned to see what had brushed it, but saw nothing there. It didn't even notice the small handprint that blended into one of the stripes of dark blue on its blue and green striped tail. It didn't notice him thanks to his shadow magic, but Hylltywyll didn't test it and stick around for long. The hole in the wall closed up again behind him as he made his way out and started off toward Raoul, the mark he'd left on the man telling him exactly where he was.
He snuck up behind Raoul, getting close but not close enough to be within his range if he swung a hand or foot out in surprise, and then spoke.
"This is the spot you found? What did you do while you were waiting for me, just stand here and tap your foot? Didn't set up any traps or anything?" Hylltywyll asked, hands crossed in front of him, one eyebrow raised.

The dhampir stood by just waiting for something, anything to happen, this Hylltywyll fellow said he’d help but he just up and left without so much as an explanation. Although Raoul would rather look like a fool for trying to get help than die an arrogant senseless death. Just as he thought the little fellow just pulled a mean trick on him he heard a voice break out looking around before spotting the furry fae a look of relief would cross his face.
“Oh trap don’t worry about I have it covered already, I didn't want to just up and use it if you ran away or something. Hold on, just give me a second and stand back”, he said, holding his hand and motioning behind him.
He lifted his chest and sucked in the air before gathering magic into his throat, Raoul then opened his mouth and blew a large thick webbing (1) towards the floor in front of him. Spraying into the ground and sticking in place he’d walk a few steps back admiring his work.
“Alright, that should be able to keep it still for a few minutes at least, I got some pretty explosive projectiles that should at least do some damage to it. I know it’s not anything too crazy or powerful but it’s something I could come up with in such a short time. I’m open to hearing if you have any better fraps or ideas. Also speaking of”, he’d turn to face the fae, “You came back a lot faster than I thought it'd be, where's the hydra you said you would bring out of the storehouse? I don’t see out here, where is it?”.

Hyll watched Raoul huck a web out of his mouth, his nose wrinkling slightly in disgust. Ew. He was glad none of his magic required spitting his spell out in such a gross way. The sticky webbing on the ground looked passable enough as a trap, even if he was expecting a bit more. It'd have to do, he guessed.
He crossed his arms and glared at Raoul. He didn't like the man questioning his abilities. Yes, he said he'd bring the hydra here. Did he expect him to come running with it chasing behind him? He can do so much better than something like that. It was insulting that this guy who didn't even have a plan before he came here was actually questioning his abilities!
"Oh, you want it to be here that bad? You're ready for it? Alright then."
Hylltywyll didn't give Raoul a chance to answer his questions before he raised one hand and swiped it in the direction of the webbing.
In the storehouse, the hydra didn't even notice as the black handprint it didn't know was on its tail started to spread, the inky blackness flowing over its scales until it was completely covered. Mid bite into another piece of dried meat, the entire hydra became nothing more than a dark silhouette and then suddenly vanished.
Above the webs, the same dark silhouette slowly materialized, a dark handprint appearing floating int he air and then spreading out into the shape of a hydra before the ink poofed away into a black mist that quickly faded to nothing, a real, solid, surprised and confused hydra in its place.
The huge creature fell just a few inches onto the webbed up ground, its clawed feet becoming stuck to the ground suddenly as all three heads looked around, taking in their new surroundings. One of the heads immediately landed on Raoul and decided it must be his fault it was no longer in the comfort of the storehouse with a tasty meal in front of it.
Hylltywyll, to the side and slightly behind the hydra, scurried off into the shadows and up a tree to watch Raoul learn not to question him from a safe distance. He'd step in to help some more... once he was bored of the show. Or Raoul was dead. You know, whichever happened first. He wasn't picky.

The dhampir looked at the shadow face with a curious look, a little worried by its cold glare.
“What? I was just asking when it’d get here, that's all, I’m not ready, I’m not ready”, he’d call out before suddenly right in front of him the swamp hydra that was previously tucked into the storehouse was materializing in front of him. It fell with a loud thud as its body hit the web under it but before Raoul could even stammer in complete shock he found himself getting hit by a large weight pressing him under, one of the creature’s head had fallen on top of him.
Quickly he rolled out of the creature’s head and onto the grass next to it looking around wildly for the shadow fae responsible for this. Unfortunately for him Hylltywyll appeared gone with the wind, dammit the little trickster managed to set him up in a bad position. He turned his head to see that the swamp hydra was indeed quite angry as its face had a deep scowl on it.
Thinking fast he pulled out his brightly colored obsidian whip and shifted its position until the bright sun met its reflection and blared the hydra’s eyes with a bright glint of flash causing it to be blinded for a moment (1) Raoul rushed forward using this opportunity to hopefully make his crazy idea work; he placed his hand on the creature’s scales praying this would work.
He would place all of his goodwill and cheer on his touch (2), “Please my friend just listen to my voice calm down every here is a friend. I don’t want to hurt you, just help these villagers with your bugging so please just be a jolly good fellow and relax”.

The hydra seemed to listen to Raoul's words, the serpentine face relaxing from an angry hiss to a quiet, almost puppy-like look. The flames that had been gathering in its throat just moments ago died out and its neck bent, lowering its head down curiously, all hostility gone.
Unfortunately, the other two heads still didn't look so friendly. Neither spared a glance at the third head as their respective elements continued tog ether in their throats, preparing to launch from their fanged maws with the force to obliterate this creature that dared remove them from their comfortable, food-filled home.
They didn't realize the real target of their fury was now sitting on a tree branch behind them, the shadows of the foliage above hiding him from view as his magic caused him to blend in to near invisibility within the dark shapes of leaves and branches lightly moving in the slight wind.
From one mouth, lightning crackled as the underside of its serpentine neck glowed blue. Arcs of electricity arced between its large fangs, the glow at the back of its throat growing brighter. From the other head's mouth, there was not nearly as bright a glow, but a steadily growing chill and a sound like chimes in the wind, the sound of ice forming on the fangs, cracking, and falling off rapidly as the air between its maw rapidly cooled in the dim blue glow.
Near simultaneously, both breaths came forth, the muddy ground freezing solid from a freezing wind blowing over it and then cracking apart and remelting as a powerful bolt of lightning followed closely behind, all headed straight for Raoul.

“Phew, okay now that’s a relief”, Raoul would mutter as he saw that the previously terrifying monstrosity who was about to demolish him now was calm, almost cute even. However, before he could count this job finished he looked up and noticed that he only managed to calm one of the heads and that the other two were still clearly enraged at the interruption of their feeding. Pure and utter terror would fill his heart as he heard the sounds of energy and magic begin to charge from their maws.
The dhampir would panic immediately trying to figure out a way to not get blasted to death. Thinking on his feet his only real option was that trick, a technique that he hated using considering it came from his father but in this case, it was his only real option for survival.
His entire body billowed with smoke as it enveloped his entire figure turning him into a simple cloud of mist (1). He flew around the swamp hydra barely outflying the beast’s double elemental beam. He reformed behind it taking a moment to catch his breath since taking that form took a lot of him. The swamp hydra struggled to turn around as its body was still enveloped by the sticky strong spider silk web under it. Its long heads though were able to turn around and glare at the dhampir trying once more to charge their elemental breaths.
However, Raoul wasn’t going to keep getting bombarded with attacks so he decided to pull out another one of his vampiric abilities. He closes his eyes before opening them once again the red irises of his eyes glaring and glowing a bright crimson color. He met the gaze of the lightning head of the swamp hydra and as soon as its enraged eyes met Raoul’s it stopped gathering energy in its maw.
It fell under his command (2) and then Raoul spoke his voice seriously and coldly, “Stop fighting me I’m here to make sure everyone is okay. You’re hurting people’s livelihoods and have to go look for other food. Help keep your brothers in line and please just go somewhere else far away”, he waited to see if his ability worked, hoping that he wasn’t about to get blasted by a triple element beam.
