Marions eyes went absolutely wide as the other opened her mouth and said she thought a frog was just a frog. He had very very dark pupils, and it sort of reminds you of the eyes of a moth now you have seen them open properly- Marion had always had a slight squint, much more so from his habit of smiling than from anything sight-related.
"The order Anura- short-bodied, tailless amphibians- include everything from frogs to toads- they are related, in evolutionary terms- and this order is further divided into several suborders- three suborders, really, Archaeobatrachia, which includes four families of primitive frogs, Mesobatrachia, which includes five families of more evolutionary intermediate frogs; and Neobatrachia, by far the largest group, which contains the remaining families of modern frogs, which is like the most commonly seen ones. This classification is not set in stone, however, since some frogs hybridize between themselves easily enough, as well as relationships among families of frogs are still under debate- "
He would have went deeper into frog territory, if not for C'Leena dropped a question after another and Marion wants to answer every single one of them.
"- oh, we always sung our magic! It is something that had always passed down in our family- how to do it, I mean. The Formulae in melody, and we write our spells somewhat like the idea of... weaving. A song is better than other types of spell for plants- in general, I feel, because the magic doesn't pull them up in an instant, but it guides and supports and let itself grow- and the magic lingers."
And lastly he nodded. "They eat everything! If you grow them really fast. There are strands that actively kil bacteria too, besides out-competing them. We did make anti-inflammation medicine with it, but doesn't use it willy-nilly, since bacteria evolves alongside it as well."

C'Leena found the frog talk to be so incredibly fascinating. There were so many kinds of frogs. Seriously, how did she not know this? In her twenty five.. No! Twenty Six Years Of Life - did she really forget her own birthday? Wow that's impressive.
BUT FROGS! C'Leena listens intently, drinking in the information. She found herself almost disappointed when her own question derailed the subject, but was promptly fascinated again when learning that he sung his magic.
"I didn't even know you could do that. I just kinda.. Do it? Like an effort of willpower, y'know? God that is really interesting. Is there anything else thats different when you cast magic? Is every spell a different song or is it just from singing in general? Holy shit wait can you show me!?" C'Leena grows more and more excited with each word out of her mouth, and by the end of it she looks about ready to start vibrating with how excited she looks.
Then suddenly all of it stops for a moment. "Oh my god if I didn't know this about frogs and fungus, what else am I missing out on?" Then in a blink of an eye, it all comes back doubled. The mere thought of learning so much is generating such a strong reaction in C'Leena's brain that she's 90% sure it's restarted her brain and forced her into a hyperactive state. This is going to become an obsession for her, it's almost guaranteed.
"Waitwaitwait, would it be possible to make medication - no wait, I don't know anything about chemistry. Dammit! I fucking knew I should've taken the class! No problem - gotta focus on prosthetics anyway - Is there a limit to the magic you can cast by song? Oh shit wait what if I'm the limited one!?"
C'Leena finally catches herself and forces deep breaths through her lungs, slowing her down. Truth be told, it's a difficult fight, and it takes her a bit to calm herself, but even then she's got a massive grin on her face. "Sorry, sorry. I just really like learning new things." She chuckles self-consciously, rubbing the back of her neck.

Marion was just as excited to talk about these things as the other is eager to learn- and his smile matched as he brought Idun, the apple-tree staff up in both hands before him.
โWillpower- well, I think some spells work like that in basis. It is like a demand, and have enough force behind its wording and you would want to continue to force it through. I feel that is more likeโฆ a lance, sort of. The weapon. When it pierces the effect gets into place in a relatively short frame of time- as soon as it could possibly be, really.โ
The elf thought for a while, and then continued.
โDespite that being said, spells are intended to be the path of least resistance, I do only speak in relativity. But song is somewhat the opposite- perhaps you can think of it as tendrils. Pushing from behind with feeding in energy, and guiding you to run in the right direction. You donโt get yoinked to the destination. You have to run it- though the process could be sped up more that you may think- and I feel this type of prompting structure is a better tool to work with anything living. Also, a songโs structure allowes more intricate prompts to be written in, and could be improved and altered in itโs duration to a certain degree without halting or breaking the spell.โ
Planting the rear of his staff onto the ground, Marion motioned for the other to watch, before continuing to explain. โAllow me to demonstrate first with what is essentially the Plant Growth spell. I am going to direct it in my song so it focuses on this one entity-โ at which he fished out a seed from his satchel, and placed it in the little cracks between the atome lining the Capitol streets. โAnd I can prompt it not to only grow, but also flower, self-pollinate, and fruit,โ
And then, he began to sing. It was a melody quite foreign- Marion had lifted his voice in the effort to be able to showcase it, and it was one flowing, continuous thing with rhythmic lulls in it. Breathing space, for both sides, before pushing on. It was much longer than necessary as Marion demonstrated in some places lyrics are not important and simply fitted repetition of the previous word or phrase in reprise, and in other places that seemed like structure and formatting of the song, it became somewhat incantation-ish but the words themselves hold little power. The music is the most overbearing code while underlying lyrics and incantations are a more subtle part to be able to be manipulated.
And true to his word, the one seed he placed grew and bloomed and its petals fell in this short space of time- and it was a dandelion, its white mane full as it swayed gently in the light breeze. It was like watching a time-lapse.

Marion's depiction of how C'Leena casts makes her think for a moment. Would it be worth it trying out a different method of casting? Instead of forcing out the spells like she does now, what if she instead tried weaving them? Perhaps she could get better results from a more gentle, delicate approach. Perhaps she can enlist Nephele's help with researching that.
As he kept explaining, C'Leena reopened that rift and pulled out a notebook, flipped through multiple pages, filled with writing and a few drawings. The drawings; even if they were barely glimpses, were very clearly drawings of the blue skinned fey they had flown by before. The cerulean skin, cloud like hair and eyes of the night sky itself is recognizable. There are a few of these drawings, and they appear to be surprisingly good and of different perspectives of the woman. It takes a few moments to find a new page, and when she does, she begins jotting down notes, her handwriting a careful cursive.
C'Leena is noting down everything she can, from the most basic of details to the most elaborate. Yet her notes stop the moment Marion starts demonstrating. She watches carefully as the seed is placed, the staff planted. For once, her focus is absolute and unwavering as he begins singing. Truly, it's like watching a timelapse as the seed grows from the ground, going through every stage before blooming. It's a stunning sight, and C'Leena can't tear her eyes away. Also because she has absolutely no idea what flower this is. Sure, she's seen it occasionally but she never paid it much mind. Now that it's in front of her, though? It's fascinating.
"That's.. Incredible." Once again, the rift opens up, but she doesn't reach inside. Instead, a floating orb bumbles out and begins circling the two. The doctor simply snaps her fingers and it comes to rest in her hand. With a small push of will, a display of the entire moment replays within the orb[1], from Marion's explanation to the accelerated growth of the flower. Once it's done, it rewinds and plays again. "I.. I've never seen anything like this. God, only if Australia had this sort of magic. Maybe it would be less of an urban wasteland.."
She shakes her head, refocusing back on Marion. "So, if I'm understanding this correctly, it's more of the melody and song than it is about the lyrics? Do the words have an effect or is it just for ease of use?"
She lets go of the orb, and it returns to it's orbit around the duo, constantly observing. It holds the memories of everything she's observed since getting it, and C'Leena constantly watches back on them, reliving the memories.
1. Glass Orb It records everything that the owner sees, keeping a collection of their memories and experiences within the glass ball. While not in combat you can hold the glass orb and watch your memories play out through it. Whatever the glass orb was able to record can be retrieved and viewed later.

Marion bent down to nick the little cluster of a plant by it's base, and with a very subtle wiggle and a rather concentrated look on his face to get it just right, the elf pulled it out of the crack in the stone- and the roots came up alongside, with the slender taproots mostly intact and ridiculously long compared to the little bit of visible vegetation ontop. He held it up in a hand, the other clutching Idun, to show C'Leena- and perhaps at this moment the result of whole process could be understood fully. A plant was never just the little leaves and buds on the surface- half of them or maybe more are buried beneath the ground.
"It is, the melodies had stayed mostly the same- As the original had been passed down, every unique version of the song also had. It is more of optimizing or adding on to it, but the Formulae had always been the Formulae."
Marion explained, thinking back to the large tomes that they had of scripts and scores of their music.
"While altering the melody and its tempo changes the 'direction' and it's 'nature' drastically, the wording used is a more minute change- it is like a larger dial and a smaller dial, and between them you can usually always get things just right. For example, again, this dandelion- there was no pollinators. The melody prompts it to grow and supplies the energy it needed to do so- in this environment that has virtually no soil to draw from- while I prompted it to grow it's flowers in such a way that the anther curls inwards- oh, I mean, I made it so that the... male and female parts of the flower touch?"
He seemed to be trying to explain things that are related to plants in a much more laymen sort of way- but it sounded more like how a teacher would word things to a kindergarten student.
"- Which does not happen by design for this particular plant, though there are many mutations out there since the base numbers are extremely high- the point being, I can prompt a single part of it to curl, grow this way or that. The slower the process, the longer the song takes, the more of these minute prompts can be fitted and finished in a gentle way. It is also possible to fit in a tonne of prompts by various means into a single bar, but that may end up more like an explosion of cells and, while they will branch the way you had dictated, if they split, die off or mutate further is now out of your hands."

As the dandelion is pulled out of the ground, roots and all, C'Leena can't help but reach out and try to take it from Marion, her grip extremely delicate and careful. As she takes it in her hand and analyzes it from all sides, noting the sheer size of the roots, she can't help but wonder..
"What does this feel like?" C'Leena asks, glancing over to Marion with curious eyes. "I ah.. Can't actually feel things."
As she looks over the flower as if it's some unknown artifact, she listens to Marion's explanation on how he casts. C'Leena nods in understanding, even before the laymans explanation - the knowledge that plants do indeed have male and female 'anatomy' being something she learnt in passing at school. Yet the explanation is still fascinating to no end. It's almost like Marion uses his magic to nudge the progression and development of something, instead of simply accelerating it; akin to using fertilizer instead of simply planting a mature flower.
"I'm just thinking.. Would it be worth it to try something similar myself? Minus the song, of course - my proficiency is strictly with the piano, no matter how much Nephele might try to argue otherwise. Nah, like I said, I cast with willpower, which to me feels like.. Hammering steel into shape; the steel being Mana in this case. Would it bring different results if I try a more careful approach? Instead of treating mana like steel, what if I looked at it as if it were clay?" C'Leena muses aloud. She hums in thought, carefully handing the dandelion back to Marion.
The temptation to test this theory right here and now is overwhelming, but seeing as the last time she purposefully tried harnessing raw mana within herself was when the Dial Fractum had an anti-magic collar on her and the very act of trying to overload the collar caused borderline explosive results, she's hesitant to say the least. Perhaps that is something to try when there is nobody around.. Just in case.
"How long have you been practicing this sort of thing? Everything you're talking about is fascinating!"

"It is not hard, but not really soft, and somewhat fuzzy- and different parts feel differently, of course. The taproots- really thin bits of root are not very rigid, but the thicker it is the more unwieldly it is. Dandelion root, this central thicker part of it, can also be used to make tea, their leaves eaten as vegetable- all around a very good plant to have around! But they can be somewhat problematic in cities like this, growing in the cracks of stone and quite hard to remove once they have really grown into the ground- you would have to upturn the stone for it."
Marion thought some about the proposed question, and answered. "I think, it would work- our song was written with oral casting in mind- if you play a piano and is able to channel energy through it, maybe magical conducts through each of the keys and they would light up the respective strings behind. I imagine it would be abit different, but different mediums have their own opportunities that are unique to themselves! Even if it will be hard to lug a piano around everywhere. Oh, actually, if you are interested- I would suggest consulting bards of the musical college about such subjects! It was said that our ancestor worked out the first ever prototype of our song with his bard friend."
The elf gestured with his free hand as he talked, evidently quite excited to share.
"I've found having several alternatives does work wonders- I mean, there are always places where something does better than the other, and learning is just so fun in itself! I've been learning the direct way of casting as well these days, and it would really be so much better to get the pain over with in an instant instead of having to draw it out- and keeping the order concise and precise without wiggle room helps in certain situations as well."
Pulling out his own green cover notebook from his satchel, Marion looked around to find a surface he could put it against, and made a beeline towards one of the tables that are placed in this resting area, and cracked the book open to a new page- You could see it was all filled with sketches of plants, done with simple charcoal, and watched him lick his lips in concentration as he pushed abit of fringe behind his ear, and began scribing down lines on the fresh pages.

C'Leena focuses in on herself as the description is given to her. It's elaborate and beautifully described. It's moments like these that make her hate the prosthetics with a burning passion. They're useful, without a shred of a doubt, but she would rather her own hands over these. But this is life, she just needs to suck it up and continue.
On top of that, despite C'Leena simply musing aloud, Marion's suggestions actually hold some weight. She'd heard of people casting using instruments before, but her only skill is with the piano, and that's not exactly.. Mobile. There could be workarounds, without a doubt, but she's not quite at the 'lets go all in' stage just yet. For now, her focus will be on simply trying to refine her spellcasting, working it under a gentler hand and seeing if that proves fruitful.
"It's definitely something to consider. I haven't actually run into any bards that use instruments as a spellcasting focus. Like you said, not sure I can lug around a piano constantly, but I'll look into it. Might prove to have some form of insight." She smiles warmly toward Marion, "I appreciate it. Thank you."
As Marion pulled the notebook out and rushed to find some surface, C'Leena was quick to act. Between one blink and the next, C'Leena was at the table Marion spotted already, without as much as a whisper hinting at her moving[1]. She looks like she was always there, with how comfortable she looks. Back where C'Leena was proves that this isn't another one of her Replicants. She really just did that.
As the notebook is opened, C'Leena looks curiously at the numerous sketches within it's pages. Detailed, elaborate drawings with their own little descriptions too fine to read at a mere glance. Still, the entire thing fascinated her, and she watches with incredible curiosity as he scribbles down something new into a fresh page.

Marion writes with a clean and quick hand- you could already tell he is trained in this sense with the small font that he had been using to fill out the space between the sketches on previous pages, written without smearing the drawings over as well as able to keep everything straightened instead of the words wiggling across the page nilly willy.
What he had proceeded to draw down on the page, before he ripped it off his notebook and handed the sheet to you- turns out to be a very simplified way of conveying a musical score, the notation using numbers as notes and underscores and dots to indicate cadence- for an instrument this would be lacking in supplementing chords, but for a song this is already enough. There were also several places where lyrics were written under- it was not exactly in the common tongue, but it was not so far removed from it either. You can sort of guess and make correlation between the sound and a certain sort of meaning, if you read it aloud to yourself for a few times.
The paper was handed to you by Marion, who looked as if he was just sharing a neat little song he heard and not some sort of family secret. "This is the basic one, and everything else grew from it, really- this melody is simply the function of guiding energy out of yourself and into somewhere else. It can be shortened, like this- "
The elf opened his hand, and particularly strange sound was made- it reminds you of when you can speed up a video incredibly fast and the sound will distort, well, it happened here as well but sounded much more like a bird's quick trilling, and the charcoal that he wrote with turned back into bark in his hand and back into a seed. If what happened before was a timelapse, this is a rewind.
"But the effect of your energy on a certain object is something everyone must experiment with themselves, hence we all have our own songs. Mama sings hers like shanties with a very repetitive tempo and structure, while papa sings his like with different parts interchanging like how you would braid hair."

C'Leena takes the paper and looks it over, absent-mindedly humming the notes shown. She doesn't understand the language the lyrics are in, but that is to be expected. Her eyes remain on the sheet music as Marion speaks, but C'Leena nods, acknowledging what he's saying. The entire thing is extremely fascinating and she can feel her mind begin to spiral into ideas and experiments to conduct with this as it's foundation.
The lyrics are similar to Latin, in the way you can infer a definition by basing it off words you already know. Lumos, for example, simply means 'Light'. It's easy to infer that from the word Illuminate, which is to introduce light to something. She reads through it, making her guesses and estimations, but she's no linguist. Chances are she's extremely wrong about a few things.
"So this is like the.. Foundation of how you cast? It has it's own uses but would need to be developed - like you said - to achieve greater results?" C'Leena asks, simply confirming what she's heard.
The demonstration that Marion gave, reducing the charcoal back to a seed absolutely entranced C'Leena. There is still a large part of her that refuses to accept that magic is real, and scrambles to find a reasonable explanation for what she saw. Each and every time, she fails to find those explanations. This is no exception.
"Y'know.. I might have to nag you sometime to teach me some of these tricks of yours." She says, her voice infused with a healthy dose of awe. She's not sure if she'll ever get used to magic, but she hopes she never does. This sense of awe is almost childlike; similar to a kid seeing the unfiltered night sky for the first time.

"Yep! Everyone have their own tempo, so to speak. I can't cast well though metal, and am not good with connecting with base elements, so I have to sing the spells a different way. Some may sing their healing spells as a prayer."
Putting the now-seed and his notebook back to his satchel, Marion dusted off his hands- the motion not really helping the black smears left behind from the charcoal.
"Oh, I would love to! But perhaps for later, since it is much more complicated, and I'd need to prepare some props for that... and I am getting hungry again."
He admitted, quite unabashedly.
"Should we get something more to eat? I'm still thinking about sausages with corn in them... but oh, I just saw someone- there, look, that huge yellow spiral thing on a skewer... what do you think it was made out of? Wait, is that ice cream? But I do want something warm alsoโโ do you think there will be noodle shops here? I passed through the border regions of crescent isles and there was a shop that sold incredible noodles in pork bone broth, would they be here? Just thinking about their soup and the crunchy bamboo shoots... wuaaaaa I want to have herb meatballs too, and roasted mushroom with cheese- "

C'Leena thinks for a moment. A long moment. It's a fascinating subject that has the doctor's mind whirring every which way. The temptation to practice it right here and now is strong, but alas.. She does hand Marion a cloth for the charcoal on his hands, however. And the fact that Marion is willing to teach her more sometime? Downright exciting.
C'Leena chuckles a little hearing that Marion is hungry again. Just how ravenous is this guy? She listens with an extremely amused smile as Marion explains in depth just what he's craving. Honestly? Fair enough - a lot of the foods described sound incredible. Although bamboo shoots? That's new to her. Truthfully, she didn't even know they were edible. Which just brings her to the realization that cooking in Australia was so much more different than cooking in Charon. Other than the obvious technological difference, the recipes, ingredients and pretty much everything was different. It's a lot more 'chaotic' here, whereas her old home was pretty precise.
She looks at the pointed out Spiral on a Skewer and stares blankly at it. It really doesn't help that she can hardly see it thanks to her horrid eyesight. "I.. Have absolutely no idea. I can't even see the thing - eyes are dogshit."
"I mean, you want food, we can go get food. I.. Think there might be a noodle stall somewhere? Events like this usually cater to most cultures so it's probably around somewhere. C'mon, lets wander." C'Leena stands up and waits for Marion to take the lead. She has no idea where she's going, so might as well let Marion lead with whatever fancies him.

The said spiral on a skewer proved to be fried potato, but cut in a special way to make it one, long, thin strip- which can be stretched out onto a skewer. The taste is effectively just regular chips if not freshly fried, but how impressive it looks is definitely part of the charm.
The little elf held the skewer up for the other to rip a section off to eat, and had some himself as well- it was quite large, and once again Marion only bought one. For a medic's child he surely did not seem too concerned about the hygienic complications about sharing food with effectively a stranger like this, but then again his upbring did include him literally playing with mud and messing around with plants and god knows how many pathogens there are in the dirt, so maybe it's just how they had always did it.
Marion had babbled on the whole way, even when they were in line to get the snack- where he had first promptly chatted up the couple in line before him to make sure he is in the right line and asked about if they knew what the snack actually is- and conversation flowed like that until it got to them, and Marion waved them goodby as they parted ways. From the enthusiastic impromptu exchange about the potato being almost a perfect food to the warm thank yous and genuine compliments that he is so ready to make, the little guy is just... having a really nice time and it radiates off him like this.
"What sort of food do you like the most- are they really different? I mean, in the world you come from? "

C'Leena happily tried what she now knows is a potato. She's never been one for carnival food since it's all ludicrously expensive, but she wasn't hurting for money. She could afford to spend a little. Unreasonable expenditures isn't exactly unheard of with C'Leena, and least of all Nephele. She's sure that Neph would understand.. Right?
The constant talking on the way there and back didn't bother C'Leena in the slightest, and she even joined Marion in the conversation with the people in front of them in line. They seemed nice enough, and C'Leena was happy with the interaction. It seemed Marion was, too. It's clear as day that he's having a blast, and that pleases the doctor by proxy.
The question about what her favorite food is caught C'Leena off guard a bit, and she needed to pause to think. It took her a few moments, but she could only come up with a single answer.
"My sister made like, the greatest Jambalaya known to mankind. It was incredible, I couldn't even begin to describe it. Most of what she cooked was brilliant." She answers, her smile radiating nostalgic happiness as she spoke. Yet, after, it morphed into a sadness. Even after all this time, she's still trying to recover.
"She learnt from the best. Me, of course, but also mum. Though she was unforgivable - she cooked her steaks well done." She chuckles, managing to wipe most of the sadness from her eyes and voice, but not completely.
"How about you?" C'Leena asks, hoping to nudge the subject back toward Marion.

"What is a jambalaya?"
The little elf tilted his head.
"Mine- well, mama makes the most perfect honey roast ever, but then there are so many things that are particularly nice to eat as well! There's a bunch of good food in the isles, and the shells and crab they sell in eclipse city are heavenly- you can just steam them and eat that without any other condiments! The freshness of the ingredient itself is enough- oh, and there's the noodles that are made from rice flour, and sweet potato, baked, and don't get me started on the mushroom stir-fry in moonglade! Even if it's meant to be the same dish, the ingredients depends on what sort of edible mushrooms you have in your local area- and it taste different village to village, most probably home to home as well."
Taking another bite out of the potato spiral- it is still crunchy and salty and aromatic with glorious fat- Marion continued.
"It's been really interesting- a privilege, really, to be able to taste the food from the locals' table- this is the most final and integral part of a bountiful harvest, I believe. We are all a part of the grand cycle of things- and it's one of the most basic joys of being alive, to eat and be full, to share with others your plenty- nothing connects more than food does, between people and people, and people with nature as well, with all the different plants and animals that are your food- and you respect them by not being wasteful, and through you they all go back into the cycle as well."
