"I am grateful that you would accompany me."
Marion smiled to the other, as they walked the paths across the marshes- they had set out with daylight in mind, so this trip would not be so perilous as it would be in the dark. According to what they had read from the instructions given, this area was one of the routes that was affected, and the tradesmen that Marion had been traveling with towards Moonglade have their paths blocked by this happening- this the sun elf have explained to the other as they walked.
"I have a plan in mind, how to go about this, but I want to hear your thoughts about the wasps first- you do seem to be more experienced than me in adventuring."
He managed a smile. You could tell that the young elf was somewhat fretted by the whole idea, but is trying his best to keep his head cool- to be fair to him, Marion did only just left home behind, and is taking his first steps into the world on his own. He didn't even have any viable weapon on him, the staff held in his hands have leafing branches sticking out all over, and frankly looked more like a living sapling than an actual stave.
—————————————————————————————————————————————— Quest Name: Attack of the Killer Wasps
Participants: Two or more
Location: Moonglade, Marshflats, Kings' Valley
Post Requirements: 5 posts per person, 200 words per post
Reward: +1 Renown
Description: People have been getting used to the presence of Fae in Charon. Many of the creatures have even begun to find places to call home. However the nature of the Fae remains the same, with many of them still pulling pranks and causing mischief. We are unsure of where it started or who began the trend, but pockets of Fae are now starting to release thousands of wasps into isolated areas, such as small villages or areas of high travel. Locals are being bombarded with the swarms of wasps, which is causing quite the disruption. We need brave adventurers to help locals survive the swarm and find a way to rid the area of the pesky creatures.

Once more into the marsh. Once more into the land soaked in water and teaming with biting insects and mud holes deep enough to swallow you whole. Once more does Everett leave his beloved ocean behind in a desperate attempt to earn enough money to survive yet another day.
Gods is he tired.
He only recently came into possession of his own vessel. A mighty galleon that he commandeered from some pirates with the help of a shady elf during their initiation into the Knight Order. With that vessel came some freedom and control over where he goes...but it also came with a never-ending list of expenses. Crew wages, supplies, repairs, and Gods forbid he forget about all the port taxes, the Lightning's Edge has consumed much of his personal savings from the past year. The burden of responsibility is both overwhelming and oddly familiar. Still, all the paperwork and accounting is worth it just to stand on the vessel's deck and feel the salty spray of the ocean against his skin.
That said, the interior of the Marsh Flats still doesn't make his top ten places he enjoyed visiting. The last time he was in the region he had purposefully gotten caught by members of the Mud Worms, a local gang set on keeping Marsh Flats from being overrun by foreigners, in a foolhardy attempt to locate their base of operations and lead authorities right to them. That whole situation quickly turned sideways when Astrid and Cypress, two young adventurers, had the same idea. They were lucky to get out of that whole mess relatively unscathed.
Returning to the flooded lands reminds him of that debacle, but this time the reason for being here is much more mundane than hunting down criminals. Dealing with some bugs shouldn't result in setting anything on fire or a giant golem falling from the treetops.
His reminiscing is cut short as the individual slogging through the mud with him perks up with conversation. He smiles and offers a nod of acknowledgment to the young sun elf's declaration of gratitude, then he considers the topic of some sort of strategy for dealing with the pesky swarms annoying the locals.
"To be honest, I'm not terribly familiar with wasps." Everett rubs the back of his head sheepishly. "I've probably dealt with more seagulls than insects."
As rugged and well-traveled as he may appear, his memory only goes back so far. It was only last year that he woke up in Sol City with a face full of sand and nothing to his name besides a broken compass and a boot full of seaweed. Over the course of the past year he's done what he can to try and figure out just why he has no memories before that point in time, but it's like he keeps hitting some wall that refuses to budge.
"I've only really been doing this for the past year. You'll catch on quick."
He looks down at Marion and considers what he knows about his new temporary traveling companion. They seem quite young for an elf, though that means they're likely much older than the average human walking about. There's a youthful innocence to them that shines in those bright eyes. But the slight twitch at the corner of their smile, the subtle worried wrinkle of their brow, and a grip a little too tight on their stave all clues the taller half-elf into just how anxious Marion is.
Dealing with some pesky insects seems like something that isn't too dangerous for them to take on. It's strange being the more experienced one in this situation. It hardly feels earned despite all the power he has amassed as of late. More than anything, it's unsettling to him how natural controlling the wrath of a storm is. What it all means remains shrouded in mystery for the time being, though the fog thins from time to time.
"The important thing is to not get in over your head, and be willing to lean on others. I've been very lucky to have the help of well-meaning strangers. I probably would have died months ago without their strengths covering for my weaknesses."
Even with Marion being newer to this kind of work, he's confident that between the two of them they can handle some common bugs. At the very least they can help any people who are in immediate trouble and get them clear of the area. His authority as a Knight of Duros would come in handy for that.
"If you do not mind me asking, what made you want to pursue the life of an adventurer?"

"I want to see the world, for what it is." The mud and the uneven ground did not seem to bother Marion as much, his white dress not getting a stain on it, as he found footing with a sense which is hard to say if gifted or trained- and he talked. The elf seemed to enjoy sharing his thoughts, and as conversation began to flow, the worry in him also drained somewhat.
He told you of his house- Aurea, of golden harvest- and of their roots in the King's Valley, and he talked about the soil and all that grows on it, about him following in footsteps of ones that came before- of how the fields stretches on for miles and miles and how to keep them healthy, thriving, so that the people that depends on this earth would thrive too.
"But- you know, this world is so very large, and- oh, how do I begin? Simply being here in the marshes already brings surprises, every step- is it not a marvel how wildlife adapt and survive in such rapidly changing environment! Simply the salt content in the soil is a hurdle, and did you know some plants have came to resolve this by simply excreting the salt out from their leaves? And then there is the flooded aspect, you know how roots tend to rot when constantly soaked-"
At that, he looked down at the ground where the pair tread, and seemed really tempted to stop and point out something in this mud that he found interesting, but fought against the thought in the end and carried on.
"-ah, I apologize. What I mean is- to be able to understand the earth, I think, I would have to walk across it first."
Falling into silence after that, as if in thought, the elf mused to himself like this for a while, before speaking up again.
"You are more familiar with the sea, then...? What is it like? I have never sailed before, and I heard she is cruel and unforgiving, but men loves her none the less."

Marion's musings about the world around him are entertaining. Listening to the young elf emphatically speak of their home, its history, and the rolling fields of gold is oddly transportive. It nearly makes him forget about the black flies nipping at his neck or the stagnant sink water seeping through his boots.
A smile tugs at the corner of Everett's mouth as he listens. The distraction seems to have helped his companion relax and put their troubles aside for the time being. It's better that way. A mind filled with worries and doubts leads to hesitation or reckless abandon.
"No need to apologize. It's good to have things you feel so passionate about."
He's the same way about the sea, so he can relate.
The moment of silence between them is a bit awkward, but Everett doesn't want to push Marion to much to keep up idle chit chat if he's not comfortable doing so. It's not long before the young man does break the silence of his own accord though.
"I am," he confirms. "It's actually not too different from where you're from. The rolling hills of grass are kind of like the waves out on the open ocean. The wind shapes everything at sea, changing the water from flat and calm to waves that tower like mountains."
Talking about it, his focus grows far off, as if looking beyond the stands of cypress trees, past the tangled mangroves on the Marsh Flat's shoreline, and out into the big blue ocean that surrounds the entirety of the continent they tread.
"It's true that if you are caught unprepared, you may find yourself in a very dangerous situation very quickly. You have to respect the water and the wind, recognize the subtle changes in the clouds, know when and where the currents and tides shift. It's a lot to consider."
And a single slip-up can cast you into the deep, forever lost in the inky black depths. The sea is both incredible and terrible. The wrath of a storm favors no one and can come across a ship in an instant, tossing it around like a toy in a wash bin until it breaks. How many lives have been lost amongst those glimmering waves? Likely too many to count. But despite all that, he's ever drawn to it, like a moth to a flame.
A fond smile spreads across his lips at the irony of it all.
"It's beautiful though. It's impossibly vast and the horizon stretches on for what seems like an eternity. There are times when you can't even tell the sea from the sky. Other times the water lights up with incredible colors, reflecting the sun on its surface before the darkness of night blankets the sky. At night, it feels like you're somewhere else entirely. You can see countless stars all around you when it's calm. Even the storms have their own beauty, the way the clouds swirl and the lightning ripples across the sky..."
It's home.
He snaps out of his ramble and pulls his attention back to the muddy path beneath their feet. Back to the land and its stubborn resilience. It's funny how different their worlds are from one another. Marion, a child of the soil, and him, a child of the sea. Despite their differences, their love for the land and sea seem to come from the same place in the end.
"If you ever choose to see it for yourself, you're welcome aboard my ship."

Marion smiled, much more genuinely now, and it was warm and soft with the crinkle in his eyes. There were plants woven into his hair, you began to notice just now- barley and wheat, their awn thorns crowning him like a radiance.
"I think- I might just take you up on that offer, if not for a later time."
It is always inspiring to listen to people talk about what they love dearly. Marion had began to understand, that when you whole-heartedly, truly believes in what you say- then, this love from your heart is sure to be able to be felt by others too. And as same as he loves the earth, this man loves the ocean, for all it's beauty and horrors in tow. ———————————————————————————————————————————————— "I want... to run my thoughts against you. It would probably be dangerous, but I would like you to hear it first."
Returning his thoughts to the task at hand, Marion sighed, and you see his ears droop once more- perhaps it is more understandable now, that you know his sentiments towards nature, that it is not only from the nerves. He did not seem to enjoy what is going to happen.
".., it is the spike moss. I have collected some samples a while back, and I can make them grow, with Plant Growth. You only need blow the mist towards the swarms."
He looked to you, and although he did not seem particularly glad, Marion still looked determined, steeling himself with an exhale.
"- I know the Remove Poison spell. We'd be fine."

Everett nods. "I can do that. Do you think the moss will deter them?"
The half-elf has heard of the moss, but his knowledge of its properties are limited to say the least. Plants are shockingly not his forte, so he defers to Marion's expertise on the matter. The young man's reassurance that poison will not be a concern is somewhat a relief, though now knowing that the moss is poisonous at all does make him more wary.
He tries not to let it show though. Marion looks determined and doesn't seem like the kind to lie about what he can or can't do. The kid could also just use a bit of encouragement, he thinks. Leaving home for the first time can't be easy.
"Don't worry. I'll have your back."
After they walk for a ways longer, they start to come across signs of people having recently passed by. The mud is more rutted, and there's even some discarded belongings sunk into the muck. Everett picks up some of the items and tucks them away to hopefully return them to their owners further down the road. As he's pulling one abandoned boot out of the mud, the pair of travelers hear a ruckus not that far from them.
Just up ahead, a number of civilians have been stranded on the side of the road. Their wagon is sunk deep in the muck, and it looks like the mount that was pulling it must have broken free and run off into the marsh. The people left behind are desperately flapping their coats and swatting at the air as swarms of agitated wasps buzz about their heads.
"That's not good," Everett huffs as he plods through the mud towards the alarmed civilians. He looks back at Marion to see if the young elf has their spike moss ready to go. He holds his palm upright and a small gust of air starts to gather around it.[1]

"Everyone clear the area! Do not swat the wasps, keep skin covered and run behind us!"
There isn't much time left to react, but Marion raised his voice and shouted out, as he ran alongside Everett, digging out the clothen covers from his satchel and threw it over himself- for both the wasps and the mist to come. As civilians ran towards them, the wasps followed suit- Taking a glance beside him, the elf deemed his partner ready.
"-Incoming!" With that word, and Marion flung out a small packet, before slamming the blunt of his tree-stave into the soil, the black, web-like moss began sprawling out before them where the packet landed- emitting their signature light grey mist. Marion then reached into his satchel to grab another pinch of seeds, sowing them into the area- these grew different plants, and you can see the vines before they bore pumpkins that emitted a strange light- their faces carved into eerie shapes.
He seemed to cast though singing, you noted, as the plants stretched and grew and so did his staff, the branches unfurling itself as magic is channeled through- Marion sang a song with no words. It may be something that would seem quite unconventional, but you could guess that was how he had always done magic before, something that passed down like a ritual to him- how to sing to guide the life that you grow. ______________________________________________ - Plant growth You can cause a small amount of vegetation to spring up in an area or on an object, causing things like grass, weeds or vines to grown over a surface. This vegetation will slowly grow over the course of time then stop when the area is filled.

The civilians are pretty disoriented by the swarm of wasps buzzing all about them, so they’re surprised to see others on the road. Luckily they’re not so distressed that they don’t recognize that Everett and Marion are there to assist them. They start running towards the pair, hoping to get away from the cloud of insects.
Everett puts himself between Marion and the civilians, not so much to block the young elf’s path, but more to just make sure they aren’t trampled by the fleeing people. Seeing that the swarm is in hot pursuit of the people, a ripple of electricity sparks along his body, veiling him in a protective layer of lightning.[1]
Once the people flee past him and Marion tosses their pouch, Everett throws his hand forward and a gust of wind catches the spore cloud from the spontaneous growth of spike moss.[2]
The swarm is buffeted by the air currents and the toxic spores start to affect the insects causing them to become dizzy and less aggressively organized. The swarm disperses, and the deafening buzz of their collective wing beats starts to die down.
Everett focuses, twisting his hand and changing the air currents once more to send a gust sweeping through the area around the wagon. The rush of air rustles through the trees and ripples the surface of the swamp all around them before coming back to him. His ear twitches as the wind whistles past before eventually dying down.[3]
“The wasps are scattered for now, but there are other creatures nearby. It could just be more wildlife, or it could be the wonderlings who caused this. It’s hard to say for certain.”
“Th-thank you, strangers,” stammers one of the civilians as he catches his breath. “You saved our skins.”
Everett surveys the group, noting how many of them have several swollen stings.
“You all should seek medical treatment as soon as possible. Getting sick out here will make you vulnerable to infection.” He then looks at Marion, remembering them mentioning that they can deal with poisons. “Marion, can you treat them for the wasp venom?”

Marion nodded. "... Burn the moss, the whole grove. The swampkins- the pumpkings, I mean, they'll tell you when is safe to stand."
The elf instructed thus, before picking up his staff from where it stood in the soil, heading over to the affected travellers.
It went better than how Marion envisioned it- but he understands how caution is not something you can throw away just because it seemed to be going well. The spike moss that he grew- it must be cleared out, or else an infestation here will prove even more detrimental to the passersby.
"Form an orderly line- I will do what I can, and I'll try to get to everyone." - But now, it's not a time to worry about what could have went wrong. Doing a deep breath, Marion tried to bring his focus back, and he called out to the group as such. Most obliged, if not some disputing with each other about the order of the line- but Marion lowered his gaze, focusing to the person in front of him.
"You'll be alright, now." Putting his palm over the stung area, Marion whispered, and the poison cleared from the other's body- be it from the wasps, potentially from the moss, or any other. "Dress your wounds, and seek a doctor when you can. Next-"
—————————————————————————————————————————— When he was done with the last person, Marion let out a sigh of relief- as he leant heavily on his staff with his eyes squeezed shut against the vertigo. It simply comes from casting too many times in succession, which couldn't really be helped until he becomes more proficient in it.
"... I'm done, here." He had probably meant to call out to Everett, but it turned out to be more of a murmur instead. ——————————————————————————————————— - Remove Poison: By touching a person or object, you can remove any form of poison or toxin. If used on a person it will remove any poison or toxic effect currently afflicting the person. If used on an item it will remove any poison from the item. Everett helps get the civilians into an orderly line for Marion. Once he's sure Marion can handle treating them for all the insect stings, he turns his attention to the wagon still stuck in the mud.
"Did you have an animal pulling that?" He asks one of the travelers.
"Ah, yes, it got spooked by the swarms. It ran us into that tree and the harness broke. Ran off that way."
Everett nods and makes a bit of a thinking face. None of the creatures he thinks he detected on the winds were large enough to be a horse or oxen. Their mount probably ran for the hills and is long gone by now.
"Do you think you can pull your wagon back to town?"
"Yeah, it'll be slow going but there isn't too much heavy stuff in there. The problem is getting it back on the road."
"We'll handle that," Everett assures the man before heading towards the wagon.
There is, of course, a patch of noxious spike moss now in the way, but the half-elf just steps up into the air, walking across it while cover his mouth and nose with his hand.[1]
Once he's reached the other side of the spike moss patch and steps down onto the wagon, he assess just how jammed up it is. Part of the shafts are snapped off and one wheel is locked up in the thick roots of the tree. It wouldn't be easy to pull it out. He has said they could handle it, but now seeing just how stuck it is does make him second guess if they can get it out themselves.
After spending a few more minutes assessing the situation, he comes up with one idea that could - in theory - work. By this time Marion has finished healing everyone up which they are very grateful for. Everett waves towards him and the group.
"I have an idea to get this unstuck, but everyone should get clear of the area just in case."
"How far away should we go?"
"Uh," Everett looks up and down the road then points towards a little mossy rock outcropping near where the road disappears around a bend. "Over there."
The civilians look a little unsure but go with Marion to safety for the time being. Once they're clear, Everett steps down into the mud near the front wheels, shoves his shoulder against the axle, then casts a spell between himself and the tree.[2] Another burst of air gathers around him and expands between the wagon and the tree. Slowly the wagon starts to roll backwards into the spike moss patch and back up onto the road.
Unfortunately, Everett has to move with the wagon to keep the pressure under control, which means he does trudge through the noxious tangle of plant growth. He huffs and hacks and coughs, bearing with the spores until the wagon is clear of the patch. Resting a hand against the wagon, he wheezes and waves down Marion again.
"Got a little magic left in you?"

The elf had to be called a few times for him to answer you- he was spacing out massively, but still stood from his temporary seat on the rock outcrop, and headed towards the other.
Taking a deep breath, Marion dug Idun into the ground once more, and reached out to hold Everett by the wrist. He did manage to get the spell going, to his credit- and Marion braced himself for the pull of nausea that rolled over him like a wave. That comes and goes, and he still stands. Good.
"You haven't... mn, ok... "
Yawning widely, Marion rubbed his cheek with a hand, not really noticing the nosebleed he had gotten, and headed over to squat down beside the patch of vegetation that he had grown- it was a safe spot, as the faces of the pumpkin lanterns that he had grown nearer to the edges than the moss in the middle had indicated, then fumbling around in his satchel to produce the good old rock and flint, dripping blood onto the ground and smearing it away with a palm as he does- which only made it more messy.
It took much many tries than usual in his current, almost drunken state- it was really lucky how he had only missed the metal instead of scraping down his own arm with a rock with that dedicated force. A spark flew, in the end, and more, the fire caught, and the grove started burning down. Marion watched, as if he was mesmerized by the flame.

The blood running down Marion’s face is alarming, and Everett is quick to glance towards the civilians. Had something happened while his back was turned? Marion’s face doesn’t look bruised or scraped up, and he hadn’t heard any argument break out. Marion also doesn’t seem particularly panicked, just…drowsy. Maybe he was frailer than the half-elf thought.
“Hey, easy.” Everett puts his hand on Marion’s shoulder to steady the young elf as he casts a spell once more. “We’re almost done here,” he assures the young man, hoping that he hasn’t pushed him too hard.
He lets Marion start the fire, but then is quick to help him back to the wagon to sit and rest for a moment. He’d stand watch over the fire to make sure it didn’t spread into the treetops and use the air currents to direct the flames back towards the water’s edge once the spike moss had been reduced to harmless ash.
Once things are all dealt with, he turns his attention back to the civilians and his companion. He approaches Marion and checks on how he is holding up.
“You did well. I’m glad you were around to help with all this.”
Marion’s airheadedness is a little strange to him. But then again he’s not that familiar with the magic the young man uses. Maybe it’s tougher on the body than his own magic. Or perhaps it’s something else. He can’t be sure, and he doesn’t want to pry. Marion helped people. Marion did well. That’s all that matters.
He sits next to him while the travelers talk about their plan for returning to Lilicors. Everett pays them little mind for the time being, he'd help them if they called, but for now his attention is on Marion.
“Are you going to be okay?”

the young elf leaned on Everett when he helped him to stand and guided him to a seat- which he took gladly, blinking the lights out of his eyes and recovering some sense enough to pinch his nose to stop the bleeding.
When the other was done and came back to check in on him, he was doing considerably better than before- the nosebleed had stopped, for one, and his eyes seemed to be more focused now. Marion managed a smile, and it was warm and genuine despite the drying bloodstains still on his face- he did try to clean them, but you can't really do a good job at that without a mirror.
"I—— it's ok. mn... Just too many... people. I ran out."
He was just a novice in magic- while mana being limited is a factor, the other is not that he was not familiar with it, but what was passed down- their song- it was in it's nature, slow to come to effect, but guiding and gentle and allows room for intricate manipulation. Doing things almost instantly in a sitting was not something that he was trained for so far, but Marion is sure he can get it right- he just needs abit more practice.
Closing his eyes again, Marion let himself lean on the other's side- they were sitting next to each other after all, and gave a little nuzzle as a gesture, too tired to do much more.
"... Me too. Thank you."

Everett lets out a soft sigh while he lets Marion rest against him. He didn't mind. It's clear he's just tuckered out. Even when the travelers are ready to get a move on, Everett insists on Marion riding in the back of the wagon, bundled up in a spare blanket, while he helps push the wagon along the road and back to Lilicors.
It takes a long time for them to make the trek back to what civilization exists in the Marsh Flats, though few from larger cities would regard Lilicors as little more than a backwater bog town. By the time they arrive on the town's edge dusk has already fallen and the innkeeper of the Safe Dry Sleep Eat Spot - a rather oddly named local inn - is perched up on a rickety ladder hanging a lit lantern to guide travelers to the establishment's front door.
Once they have managed to wheel the wagon to the side of the inn, Everett fetches Marion from the back, offering the young elf a piggyback ride if he's still too tired to walk. Everett would also handle securing a room for the night for the young man, covering the expense and making sure that Marion gets something to eat and drink as well. That is assuming Marion would allow it or is conscious enough to argue against it.
The travelers also find themselves accommodations and insist on buying the two adventurers their dinner and any drinks they want as thanks for their assistance. Everett doesn't deny their offers and is grateful that this whole venture won't completely drain his personal funds.
If Marion is at all awake while they sit at a table in the common space of the inn and eat their hot meals, Everett would start up a conversation with the young man.
"So," he'd start. "Where are you headed to next?"

While there were elves that sleep with their eyes open, apparently Marion does not do that.he did doze as much as he could on the way back, and was soft and compliant when offered help- he did insist on paying for his own room though, and now that the other man wouldn’t take no for an answer Marion could only decide to try and repay him in some way later. Shoving the cash into his pockets is a valid choice as well.
After a short nap, though, and with food in him- the elf was properly recharged, eagerly shoving his face with meat boiled down beautifully tender- he seemed to enjoy every part of a meal, a look of bliss on those perpetually blushy cheeks.
“Oh, I am headed to Moonglade- Stargazers Village, if I remember rifht. Now that the wasps are cleared, we can move forward now- I should rejoin them by tomorrow, and we’d set off again!”
Seeming excited that the prospect,Marion’s ears perked up as he talked.
