Hearth Day.The day of chocolates, flowers, and romance. The day to show the person closest to you how special they are to you with extravagant gifts, fancy dinners, and poems written from the heart. Yet none of that was on the docket for a certain cowboy. Flint was instead drowning his sorrows away in a dimly lit tavern in the heart of Darkviel. His hat was placed beside him on the sticky wooden surface of the bar; his hand wrapped around a half-empty glass of bourbon while a cigarette hung idly on his lips.
Flint removed the smoke from his lips before quickly replacing it with the rim of his glass as he downed the rest of his watered-down bourbon. He slammed the glass onto the bar as the burn made its way down his throat. “Hey, Partner, pour me another.” he slurred as he tilted his empty glass to the short and portly man behind the bar; it was clear that this wasn’t the first drink of the night for him … nor would it be his last. The bartender's eyes bounced between Flint and his empty glass. Debating whether or not to cut the drunk off, but the allure of a paying customer seemed to outweigh his concern as he grabbed a bottle from behind him and refilled his glass with a sigh.
“Much obliged,” Flint thanked with a wink before returning the rim to his lips for another sip. Ever since he left that small town in the desert, he had always dreaded hearth day. Most days, he would count being alone as a blessing despite his love of the limelight. This was the one day when he was reminded how alone he felt he was, and as he kept his eyes down on the bar, those thoughts spiraled in his head. Subconsciously, he picked at the newly formed patch of dragon-like scales that sat below his eye until he felt something bump into him. “Hey kid, watch it!” he barked at the elven man who had accidentally backed into him. Before Flint could escalate further, the sound of the bar door opening pulled his attention to see a familiar one-armed figure stepping into the smokey tavern.
