The longsword swiped twice through the air,a nearly taking Tatalia's head with it on the second pass. She rolled out of the way, tumbling into a pile of burning debris. The goblin hissed in pain, then spotted the archer just as he loosed his arrow at her. She ducked just in time, but she still got nicked in the ear. That pain was pretty sharp.
This is bad, Tatalia thought to herself as she hopped backward into the air to reposition herself.1 She landed on the rooftop of one of the few houses still standing nearby. She just needed a moment to think!
But the raiders weren't going to give her one. The goblin didn't even get a second to breathe; a lightning bolt slammed into her back,b knocking her sprawling back into the midst of the other bandits. Her whole body screamed as she crashed face first into the ash covered dirt.
"H-ha! Haha!" The goblin staggered back to her feet, swept her enchanted short sword in front of her, and slipped her goggles down over her eyes. "Three against one, is it? I like these odds!"
She didn't, actually. For the first time in a long time, Tatalia was the one being ambushed, not the other way around. She was probably going to die. But there was that saying she'd lived by for the last several years...
Fake it 'til you make it, Tatalia reminded herself. She flashed a cocky grin at her opponents. Then she slipped her dagger out of sleeve just long enough let loose a brilliant flash of light2 that blinded her enemies, and even sent the flyingc sky wizard tumbling toward the ground!
It wasn't just a means of blinding her enemies, though. It was a signal. Tatalia was hoping someone would see the light flare from a distance and rush to investigate.
There wasn't any more time to think, only to fight. Tatalia rushed at the dazed swordsman, slipping behind him to deliver a quick pair of stabs to his back!3 But his armor absorbed most of the impact; her blade just wasn't slipping into the weak point!d No time to think; she kept moving, ducked beneath his sword, scrambled into cover behind an overturned water trough just as an arrow buried itself in her shoulder.e
A yelp escaped Tatalia's throat. The electrocuted, ash covered goblin quickly grabbed the arrow in her shoulder and yanked it out with a pained grunt. She tried to breathe, but the ashes and cinders in the air filled her lungs, and all she could do for the next few seconds was cough.
Tatalia really needed a lucky break!
