Even in the middle of winter Zeinav, Ak’ka was sweating her shit off. She hated the heat. She fuckin’ hated sand. Even snow and ice in Frostgale was densely packed and the ground felt like ground. In the desert Ak’ka moved on what felt like solid water - didn’t give her no chance to brace herself in a fight, to dig her heels in and hold strong. She was always gettin’ lost in the moving environment, and always. Damn. Sweating. She grunted and smudged a beat of sweat off her brow, wipin’ it off on the side of her skirts. She’d already long since shrugged off her furs, but even that didn’t do jack to stave off the heat from her wild mane of hair or the pure, coiled muscle on her frame. At this point, there was nothin’ she could really do but suck it up and keep pressing on. After all, there was a job to do. To be honest Ak’ka wasn’t sure what the fuck was so scary about flowers, or why someone felt the need to hire one of the most frightening mercs in the land to take a pleasant fuckass romp through the oasis, but money was money. And the job was pretty simple. Get in. Take notes about the flowers growin’ around the rim of the water basin. Get out before anything weird happened. When she asked what the hell might happen that they needed to look out for, no one could answer her. Somethin’ shimmered in the distance. Ak’ka stopped, hand cupped over her squinted eyes in an attempt to try and get a damn look at this mirage. From here it was hard to see, but the rippling in the air almost looked like light bouncin’ off water. In the distance, she thought she heard the sound of… rolling waves-? Nah, that couldn’t be right. They were nowhere near the ocean. Must have been one of those sand-hallucinations. “We must be close.” She grunted, glancing Javal. She was pretty damn glad to have a fellow fighter with her for this. Nothing was going to go wrong, and Ak’ka wasn’t the kinda woman who got scared or nervous easy - no point in it when you could handle any threat that came your way - but she was… aware of the chance something might go sideways. And when it came to working with other mercs, there were plenty of folks she’d crossed paths with that she wouldn’t piss on even if they were on fire. But Javal was good people. He was pretty happy go lucky, and most things flowed off him like water off a duck’s back - and damn if he wasn’t fun to be around. With him by her side she felt pretty damn confident that they could handle whatever… whatever was waitin’ for them here. She elbowed him in the side, a blow that would’a knocked anyone lesser off their feet and into the sand. “‘Least it’ll be easier than an undead dragon or bein’ shrunk, yeah?”

Just some random patch of mysterious flowers seemed like a very boring job to Javal as he listened to Nadia give him her usual debriefing. The other missions seemed fairly easy as well transporting cargo, catching some bandits in the Moonglade forest, and saving a cat from a tree. As much as Javal would like to do all of them he knew that his team was dying to see some action so in an attempt to free his subordinates from a boring mission he decided to take on checking on the flowers in the Zeinav Desert. With a simple, “I’ll check out the flowers, have fun guys”, he left accompanied by a pet flitten as it buzzed alongside him excitedly. Making his way from Dragon’s Cradle to Zeinav Desert took little time, especially as he was accompanied by his loyal steed, Asleipmir.
After some time he stumbles upon a delightful sight, his dearest friend Ak’ka the Bonegrinder in the distance. He ran to her and yelled, “AKKA'' excited that at least even this mission was probably going to be boring and that at least had a friend to talk to.
He chuckled as she elbowed into his side, although not hurting him it pierced his armor, not suprising considering Ak'ka's great strength.
“That is true friend Ak’ka although, to be honest, both sound a lot more fun than looking for some random flowers that appeared. How about you though friend how’re you doing? What’ve you been up to? How strong have you become? I hope we get the chance to fight again!”, he exclaims, excited to speak to his close friend again.

“Oh, for damn sure those are a lot more fun.” Ak’ka grunted, nodding in agreement. She and her bud usually got up to some pretty whack shit; fightin’ necromancers with undead puppets, tricky fae just lookin’ for a couple of laughs. Hell, they’d even burned down a tavern. Ak’ka could create an entire list of shit she’d rather be doing than sitting down and smelling the roses.
But, hell. Money was money.
“Uh, what’ve I been up to?” Ak’ka crossed her arms, thick brows furrowing while she thought. Hadn’t been long since they’d seen each other, to be honest. And she’d been laying low - or as low as a gal like her could - just while she learned to control the Beast. “Mostly some fighter’s Guild shit… you do anything fun lately?” They went back and forth for a bit - you know. The usual chitchat. Catchin’ up.
“Yeah, I’d love to fight sometime. Just don’t provoke the Beast again, eh?” She let out a laugh and slapped her knee. “Ain’t too fun if I’m only backseat fighting.” If she was still upset about her new condition, Ak’ka didn’t show it - it was all just part of life, and so long as she was still up and kickin’ to live it, not much phased her for long.
Based on the look that suddenly passed across Keiga’s face, though, he didn’t agree.
Ak’ka leaned over and nudged him with her boot. “Oh, lighten up, would ya? I’m not gonna keel over just cus’a some magic bear bullcrap.”
“The Beast really takes a lot out of you. Don’t make light of it.”[1]
“I’m a-okay now, aren’t I?” She grunted, not likin’ the feeling of bein’ chastized. She was fine. “Dancin’ around this flower bullshit like a fuckin’ spring chicken. Now come on, let’s go get this over with.”
Keiga rolled his eyes and continued on, keeping pace with Ak’ka and Javal across the scorching sands. She could already see spots of baby blue against white in the distance. Looked like they were getting close. 1. Necklace of Animal Speech

“Yes, for as much as this job is important for the sake of whatever ends that our employer has in mind, it is still incredibly uninteresting. At least we’ll see some cool flowers if anything else on this journey”, Javal exclaims, trying to be optimistic.
“Ah, Fighter’s Guild business, that sounds like fun. I wish I could do some missions for them now that I’m a member but I’m just a little busy with work at the moment. Having grown in reputation now, the business has been booming a lot more than before. Why the other day I had to go take down about twenty goons who were causing trouble over in Moonveil and that was on a slow day. Although it is very tiring I would consider it pretty fun although in terms of personal time, I have gone on a trip with a friend to train and get stronger”.
He motions towards himself, his appearance slightly different than the last time they’d met, Javal was buffer and just an inch or two taller than before.
“Great I look forward to battling against you whenever we have the chance to do so and of course friend Ak’ka. I’ll try not to do that although I will say I relate to not enjoying backseat fighting. I've had this slight problem since I was young where whenever I reach a breaking point I lose consciousness and my body takes over itself. It’s frustrating to deal with and I’m pretty sure it happened during our fight last time”.
Javal chuckled as he saw the back and forth between Ak’ka and her new tidal serpent whom he hadn’t seen before.
As Ak’ka mentioned the getting it over with and the group moved on towards their target, the fellblood then stopped and touched the bottom of his feet coating them in a layer of ice (1), and playfully jokes, “Hey Ak’ka first one there has to pay for the other’s food after this”, and sprinted forth zooming through the desert sands with an excited smile on his face.

“Yeah. Just gotta hope they know better in mind than we do what this is all for.” Ak’ka agreed, hands still tucked in her pockets. Thing about being a merc was, sometimes you got jobs like this. They could’a just hired some researchers, but if they wanted muscle, it meant one of two things. Either they expected trouble, or they didn’t know what to expect.
“Oh, yeah?” Ak’ka asked as Javal boasted about how busy he’d been. Even though he hadn’t been able to do fighter’s guild stuff, he didn’t really have any trouble finding trouble. “Sounds like fun. Possession sure don’t sound fun, though. Have ya tried just beating yer body into submission when that happens? Picture it like two dudes drivin’ a wagon, and one dude is tryin’ to wrestle the other for the reigns. You just gotta smack that dude away ‘til he gets the hint.”
Wasn’t really helpful advice at all to be honest, but it was all Ak’ka had. When it came to keepin’ the Beast away, she had to think of it like fighting in an arena, or a battlefield. Where if you lose, you die. It was how she’d managed to wrestle it into some semblance of control. Where it only got let out on her terms - in the moments where adrenaline was high and beast and man were one, and it was impossible to tell who was more monstrous.
She was so distracted thinkin’ about the beast that she almost missed Javal’s challenge - but by then he was already zoomin’ off.
“Wha - hey!” Ak’ka stamped her foot on the ground, ice coating her feet in the same way Javal’s had.1] Unfortunately for Javal, he’d triggered her competitive spirit. One of the tattoos on the mural of Ak’ka’s back began to glow, from black as pitch to white as snow with a luminescent aura - and the winds behind her began to pick up, and the Bonegrinder was shot forward like a hurtling stone, natural speed and magic propelling her forward.[2] Four hundred pounds of hulking, ten-foot half Orc, to anyone else, mighta been a death sentence. But it was all good clean fun.
Ak’ka zoomed past Javal, stomping her foot on the ground again and forcing a chunk of solid ice to jolt from the ground between Javal and the ring of flowers.[3] And givin’ her just enough time to cross the threshold of baby blue flowers.
Ak’ka clasped her hands together and raised them in the air, lettin’ out a triumphant roar. “Nobody bests the Bonegrinder! Nobod-“
Then there was a pop in her ears, and the feelin’ like she was being sucked backwards through a straw - too fast for her to comprehend. For Ak’ka, it was only a blink, and a bit of weird pressure in the back of her skull. Just like that, and she was right back where she started.

Javal thought for a moment about Ak’ka’s advice but decided to fully think it over once he beat her in their race. He glanced back expecting Ak’ka to run behind but quickly a look of surprise struck his face as a faint trail of ice followed her feet and suddenly she was zooming through kicking up massive amounts of sand and dirt behind her. She was a massive force and honestly for a second part of him was alarmed that she’d crash right into him. Unfortunately for him, the slight moment of hesitation was more than enough to let Ak’ka’s bolting figure pass him. He tried to rush forward keeping his momentum but suddenly a frozen wall appeared in front of him causing him to smash right through it.
He stumbles over looking up at a triumphant Ak’ka chuckling and shivering weakly, “Ha, good job friend Ak’ka, you wo-” and suddenly his whole body shook. It felt like every single part of him was being pulled back right through the air itself. His body felt squished and contorted as suddenly he returned right back to where the day had started. He was in the middle of the desert riding on Asleipmir and a cheerful Elessie buzzing around.
“What just happened?”, he stammers out looking around confused, “Was that some sort of dream? Did I fall asleep? I swear Ak’ka’s never been in my dreams, usually the only thing in them is sandwiches, my ship, and the open sea”, he keeps pondering what just happened out loud, his loyal companions heading him no mind.
Then once more like that strange vision earlier he spots a familiar figure, Ak’ka the Bonegrinder.
He hurriedly jumped off his steed and sprinted towards the friendly face yelling, “AK’KA'' and about to ask how she’d been but for an odd reason perhaps from that weird vision earlier he didn’t feel the need to ask how she’d been instead he simply asked with concern, “Hey Ak’ka did you have a dream about me? Because I just had a weird daydream we both meet up and race towards some sort of oasis”, he then turns and points and exclaims, “OH! Kind like that one right here!”.

Ak’ka’s head hurt.
She grimaced, takin’ in her surroundings. They were still in the oasis, the roar of the waves in her ears and the feeling she’d just been snubbed of a victory even though she couldn’t remember why. Javal was back by her side, but weirdly enough, Keiga was… ahead of them. She brought her finger to her lips in a whistle, callin’ her serpent back to her side. Keiga whirled around, slitted eyes widened as he turned tail and came back to her side.
“What’s going on? You were winning.”
“Winning what?” Ak’ka grimaced, snorting out a puff of cold air in frustration. Somethin’ funky was happening here, but she wasn’t sure what the hell it was. Keiga just tilted his head at her, forked tongue darting out of his mouth.
“The race?”
She turned back to Javal, who’d only just noticed she was there. He sprinted up to her, waving his arms in the air like an excitable dog. And what the hell was he talking about? “Javal, we came here to investigate the flower ring, remember - YES, the one around the oasis. Did’ya hit yer head on the way up here?”
He pointed up towards the oasis - Ak’ka held her arm out in front of him, preventin’ him from just running off.
“Wait. Somethin’ ain’t right here.” To her it felt like it’d only been a second since they started off towards the flowers… an entire second for Keiga to teleport from her side to the basin of the oasis. And now her headache, the gap in Javal’s memory -
Deja vu. That’s what it was.
“We’ve done this before, ain’t we?” Ak’ka growled. Monsters, she could handle. Something she could punch. But this? She didn’t like this. This was somethin’ that couldn’t be solved with fists.

“We did? I mean I know that I came here on orders from my employer who assigned me to investigate some flowers. If I remember correctly I had that weird dream I was telling you about and then woke up on my horse I think at least? I don’t think we talked before right now in reality”.
He was about to start running towards the oasis before he could even step forward. The orc woman held him in place with her arm in front of him stopping him.
He looked around a little confused, “What is the up friend Ak’ka? Eat something that’s bothering your stomach. Is the heat getting to you?”, the fellblood asked, still not realizing the true reality of the situation just yet and just worried about his friend.
“We have?”, Javal asks, a little confused, “But I’m sure we just met now, didn't we? I mean sure I had that dream that was exactly as you spoke of but I’m sure that was just a silly dream I had. I have pretty odd dreams, you know this one time I dreamt I was eating this unlimited pear on a boat in the desert it was pretty cool”.

Ak’ka grimaced, running a hand through her hair. This was gettin’ outta hand really quickly. She was pretty sure they were hired together, weren’t they? She was pretty sure they had been. Or maybe not. Her head felt so weird, like somethin’ was splitting it apart. Keiga nudged his head against her boot, concerned.
“Are you alright?”
She grimaced again, ‘cus it was all she could do.
“Nah, my stomach’s fine. I’m fine.” She answered both Javal and Keiga. An enemy she could see and touch was one she could hit, and therefore one she could destroy. But this was somethin’ outside of her wheelhouse, and Ak’ka hated it.
“I have the same feeling. And if it’s a dream we’ve both had, then that’s pretty damn uncanny, ain’t it? So I’m thinking, maybe something bigger is going on here. Maybe something here is stealing our memories. You ever heard of flowers that have magical properties?”
She knew some types of flowers had poisons, but was there a poison that could fuck up yer mind?
Only one way to find out.
“I could damn sure use a pear right now.” She lamented. “Alright. You two wait here, watch me.” She stomped back up to the ring of flowers, the roar of the ocean in her ears. While fellblood and serpent watched, she picked a flower…
And held it in her hands for a minute.
“Nothing.” Ak’ka grunted, frustration budding in the grind of her teeth and the tension in her muscles. She crushed the flower and her hands and stood, waving to Javal to get his attention. “Nothin’s going on, it’s safe-”
She looked down at the flower in her hands where she was crouched in the ring, a grimace on her face. “Nothing.” She stood, crushing the flower in her hand, and raised her hand to wave to Javal. “Nothin’s going on, it’s safe for y’all to come up.”

“Are you sure?”, Javal said worriedly as he glanced at Ak’ka, “You look like you're confused or in pain”.
The fellblood placed his finger on his chin as he listened to Ak’ka this day was getting weirder and weirder by the looks of it. How did they have the same dream and remember it when they woke up? How did the day feel like it already happened? What was he going to have for lunch? All these thoughts and more ran through his head as stood and listened for a moment taking Ak’ka’s theory into mind.
“It is very uncanny I’d say the uncanniest, something stealing our memories? But if that was the case how did we end up where our day started? Unless we simply forgot a few days which in that case I’m sure my employees would’ve noticed something is up. I’ve heard of magical property flowers before I encountered a patch of them recently, however, the ones I encountered last simply switched my body with that of my friend. I’ll tell you getting back was a very difficult thing but do you think this might be some of the same case? Are you in my body and am I in yours?”, he questioned.
“Okay, I shall stay here and watch to the best of my abilities. I've never stayed here and watched before”.
He intently stared at Ak’ka not trying to blink which began causing him great eye discomfort as he focused on the scene in front of him. Javal continued to stare with all his might and said nothing as he focused on watching Ak’ka as she stood in frustration. It wasn’t until Ak’ka called him over that he broke his intense eye contact and finally blinked the pain over as he jogged towards her.

“Not in pain.” Ak’ka said. “Annoyed, I guess.”
How the hell was Javal not seein’ something weird was going on here? She had a nose for magical fuckery ever since she’d been buried in that avalanche, and here, as the sands shifted around them and the roar of ocean waves rang in her ears, Ak’ka was struck with that same feeling. Something - or someone - was yanking their chain.
“No, I ain’t in yer body.” Ak’ka laughed. “I think I’d realize if I was suddenly all short and shrimpy.” A joke. But the story about the magic flowers struck a chord in her. A powerful magic…
Ak’ka didn’t have no anti-magic capabilities in her arsenal, but a thought occurred to her. If it was the flowers, then there was nothing stopping the two of them from simply ripping these damn flowers out at the bud. Time was working against them, and the warrior didn’t really feel like standing around with her thumb up her ass when they could be making progress.
Javal didn’t seem to notice anything weird, so Ak’ka gestures towards the flowers gathered in the weird ring. “Come on. Let’s rip these bastards out before the magic does anything strange to us.”
She punched her hands together, the tattoos on her shoulder glowing as two extra arms sprouted from her torso.[1] More hands to fuck up these flowers.
She punched the earth, ripping a massive hole in the circle, tearing out the dirt. And then Ak’ka took another chunk. And another.
And she was about halfway through when she blinked, and the circle was whole again, and she hadn’t even summoned her tattoos again.
The headache came back in full swing.
“Fuck… what was I doing again?” 1. Extra Arms

Javal continues to jog forth over to where Ak’ka is and looks over to where she gestured a little confused.
“Why would we want to hurt an innocent patch of flowers friend Ak’ka? Isn’t a hero supposed to protect all of life, even plant life, so wouldn’t killing the flowers be bad?”, he questions before suddenly exclaiming, “OH NO! UNLESS THEY’RE EVIL FLOWERS!”.
He quickly surmises that this is what his friend meant and immediately gets to work already familiar with intimate objects being evil, his chief archenemy, and being one of those so-called evil forces at least in Javal’s eyes. He grabs his katana and starts swinging it around the patch of magical flowers cutting them in half as he glides and avoids Ak’ka doing her ripping of the earth itself.
He chuckled as he did so, “Gosh this is indeed some great fun I’ll say it’s like training but against a strong foe”.
Suddenly as he turns around to look at Ak’ka a wheezing and crushing feeling comes over his head as he hits the ground. Suddenly his entire body felt like it was spinning around ripping him from where he stood and twisting and contorting his mind. And then there he was again riding in the middle of the desert on his trusted steed Asleipmir waking up from what he thought was a really weird dream. This one was really strange. He had a dream inside of a dream? He hadn’t heard of that before and thought it was odd. He didn’t pay it too much mind though and just continued forward through the desert until he spotted a familiar face in the distance.
Javal gets off his horse and sprints forward yelling, “HEY AK’KA OVER HERE FRIEND!”.

Even in the tense moment Ak’ka huffed a laugh.
“Yeah, that’s what I’m sayin’.” She said. “I’m pretty sure these are evil flowers.”
The roar of the ocean in her ears seemed to agree with her.
Ak’ka was no mage. She had magic, yeah, in the way most folks held a spark of primordial energy in ‘em. It was her rage brought to life. But she didn’t know magic the way learned folks did. When you breathed it you didn’t need to be able to see it. She had no ken what the hell kind of magic was in these flowers, but she bet a mage or summat could… divine it, or whatever they did. The problem now being that the Mage’s and the Fighter’s guild weren’t exactly on good terms.
Maybe she could collect some of these and bring them to Ein, or even Taki… one of them might have a better idea what these flowers did. But since neither of them were here, it was up to Ak’ka and Javal to figure out the secret of this damned place. And there was little she hated more than havin’ to solve something with her head and not her fists.
But clearly, brute force wasn’t working either. Cus the second she and Javal started rippin’ up the flowerbed, Ak’ka was struck with a weird, familiar sensation, like the world was bein’ pulled out from underneath her feet -
She let out a yell, muscles coiled in anticipation of whatever was about to happen -
Ak’ka was standin’ at the edge of the flower ring, Keiga at her heels. The baby blue plants swayed in the breeze, a perfect circle in the sand. She looked around, wild. Wasn’t she here with Javal? They’d been talkin’ about him and a friend encounterin’ magic that sent them into one another’s bodies…
But if that was the case then where the hell was Javal?
Ak’ka whirled around, wild-eyed, until she spotted the figure on horseback. Now how the hell did he get over there so fast?
Ak’ka froze in her tracks, a chill curlin’ up her spine. He was wavin’ at her, like an old friend saying hi after months apart. The exact same way he’d waved at her a couple’a minutes ago when they’d met up.
”HEY AK’KA OVER HERE FRIEND!”
The deja-vu returned with a vengeance.
Ak’ka shoved her hands in her pockets and stalked over to him, tusks grit in irritation. She didn’t bother with small talk. She was already painting a picture of what was happening here, and she didn’t like it one bit. “Javal. Quickly now, don’t fuck around. Tell me what you remember of the last few minutes.”

Quickly Javal would hop off his trusted steed when a wave of familiarity washed over him, he felt like he had jumped off of Asleipmir a lot today. However that couldn’t be, it was barely midday, and as far as he remembered this was the first time he’d cross through the desert. Something did feel weird as he walked over to Ak’ka, a strange feeling that he couldn’t shake off. It made his head hurt as he tried to place and figure that feeling out, it had felt as if he’d been here before. But that couldn’t be he just got here today right? That weird dream inside a dream inside another dream couldn’t possibly be real.
Before he could finish going down that trail of thought he was surprised by Ak’ka’s strange greeting, “Oh well hello to you too friend Ak’ka, uh let me think. I had fallen asleep on my horse and had this crazy dream, I was here you were here and we were ripping some flowers apart. You know it was a really funny dream because it happened like once or twice and I had a dream inside a dream. Although something feels kind of weird, to be honest, those dreams were realistic. It was kind of unnerving. Then I woke up on Asleipmir’s back and saw you and then right now I am currently talking to you. How about you Ak’ka? What do you remember from the last few minutes?".
