Looking at books for an extended period of time can have an interesting effect on the unaccustomed. Quincy had been pouring over these tomes for what felt like days, in reality it had only been an hour or so. The words seemed to mesh together, or he’d lose his place do to some small disturbance, or his eyes would jump between lines, occasionally rereading a line he’d read three times over now. This whole ordeal was almost as exhausting as practicing with his spear. Which was a rather tall order. With all that being the case the only truly frustrating part to all this was the reading material and subject matter.
Quincy cared so little for the gods he’d heard so much about before this, the most interesting thing about them was that they were replaced by this imposter. Somehow the news of this imposter god was of little importance to him. He’d never prayed to any of the gods, never thought to worship them, never joined in on any of the religious celebrations or activities. His faith was in the uncaring god. The god that sought no worship or prayer, that cared not for the trivial lives of those beneath him. One of these documents had to have more information on the god. At least that’s what he was telling himself as his eyes traced, retraced, and reretraced the pages of the old dusty tomes that laid before him.
The afternoon sun pouring into the library allowed the candles to stay unlit. They'd need them for later. With all the dust floating around from the pull and opening of such old books and tomes the room was filled with floating dust particles giving the entire library a rather ethereal look. Quincy sneezed.

Javal had finally had a day free from any missions or jobs from his job as the leader of a security company and was excited to make the most of his day. He woke up happy and got ready for the possibilities of what he could do today ahead of him. He could train his swordsmanship in the mountains of Dragon’s Cradle or spend the day at a tavern getting along with the people inside. However something was bugging him, something at the back of his head was beginning to irk and make his head spin. The more time he spent thinking about what he should do as he walked out of his galleon anchored in the port of Thorock the more he reflected on what had occurred. He knew that something in this world was amiss, something was off, something didn’t feel right. Ever since the villainous Scern revealed that perhaps what they were being told was a lie as well as the battle against the god of rebirth Vulcadreus Javal had felt strange. As if something was missing, something not quite right about all of it but considering all of the things he had to do he just kind of shoved it back into his head never to focus on it again, until now that was as he walked through town looking for something to do. That’s when he was approached by an elderly-looking dwarf woman with thick bifocals as she waved him over.
“Why hello there young man, it seems that your spry eyes are indeed working properly now. I humbly ask you young one to aid me as well as the rest of Charon. Considering the recent events and revelations related to the gods and Screen I have begun to take a deep dive into the old and lengthy history of our nation. However, I have come to realize that this old bag of bones’s eyes aren’t what they used to be. I ask you young man to comb over the texts at the library and look into this matter thoroughly and investigate what truly is going on. Is it indeed true what that dastardly fellow Scern says? Are the gods truly not what they seemed? What is going on? I can pay you a great sum if you do this for me dearie now what does a youngster like you say?”.
Javal looks down and smiles before cheerily expressing, “Why of course my friend I’d be more than happy to help you in this search for knowledge. I give you my word I shall comb over every book in that library to find the truth and will inform you of everything I’ve learned”.
He then shakes the old woman’s hand and walks towards the library thankful for the opportunity and even curious himself as to what was going on in the world. He quietly and carefully opens the library doors walking inside the ethereal-looking quiet world within the shelves, tables, and people here. He then first walked over to the history section and pulled out a book before then looking over the area looking for where to sit and begin his research. Quest Name: Nose in a Book
Participants: Two or more
Location: Anywhere (libraries)
Post Requirements: 4 posts per person, 200 words per post
Reward: +1 Renown
Description: The world is starting to warm up to the idea of Scern's story being truthful, at least to some degree. Many still can't fathom how they were able to be tricked for so long by an imposter god and had absolutely no idea about Vulcadreaus. Scholars are starting to realize they know very little about Charon's true history and are now asking for help from the public. People have begun to pour over old texts, study forgotten scripts, and attempt to find any information that would help shed light on the world’s current situation. You are being asked to study old texts from libraries or book collections around Charon, hoping to find any clues to help explain things. (No information is found, however.

This process continued to take from his well of patience. Though he knew his search was important, for him and to the woman that roped him in here for different reasons, the process was just so tedious. What exactly were they expecting those who volunteered to do this work to find? How would they feel if they actually found something that showed the ‘heretic's’ claims in the light of truth? Taking a moment Quincy leaned back in his chair while gripping the bridge of his nose tight. A reset was in order and a moment to process and gather himself. How many books and tomes had he gone through at this point? A large began to escape him as the questions began to mount up.
Just then there was a sound one that Quincy recognized all too well. Someone else had just traded their freedom for this purgatory of books, tomes, dust, and silence. Sure due to the nature of their search and the amount of people the library was louder than one may normally find. Though the sound of a pin dropping is louder than an owl’s wings in the night. He would have been lying if he said he didn’t wish for someone to occupy the desk across from his own.

Javal looked down at the book he had picked up titled, “History of Charon: Through the Ages”, and looked over to the table in the corner where he saw another man surrounded by books.
He looked around and there were a couple of people already occupying the available tables, a grandmother elf sitting down reading a magazine, kids reading fairy tales, a city official going over old files, and finally there was a young scholar who had fallen asleep in a book with his head in the middle of two pages. He saw Quincy in the corner and decided to walk over and sit across from him seeing how strong-looking he was. He hoped he wasn’t interrupting and whispered, “Hello there good sir! May I be allowed to read here?”.
After hearing his response he opens his book and begins reading, going through the book at a decent pace. It for the most part talks about wars and allegiances although personally interesting he can’t find a mention of the gods. He scours through it another two or three reads he places it down. He then stands up and puts it back in it's place before picking up another book on the same shelf, "History of Sol City, our Great Capital" and sits back down ready to read.

The dust had finally started to get to him. His nose felt like a damn about to break as a sneeze was building up with the force of 10 mules. Every ounce of his being prepared itself for the tremendous kick back of the cannon that he called a nose. Until…nothing. The entire sensation left him leaving Quincy in this odd sensation, or a purgatory, of dissatisfaction. The reading was dry and uninspired, the information seemed impossible to find, the dust seemed to be piling with each piece of literature, and now this. In a small bout of frustration Quincy drug his hand down his face. As his eyes opened again he was met with a new view entirely. A rather traveled looking fell-blood sat before him asking him if he could occupy the seat across from him.
“Your company would be a gift. Please.” His voice carried an air of frustration and couldn't help but be a bit louder than a whisper. With that he watched as the man grabbed his book and sat down.
“Here these might help.” His voice was slightly less agitated as he placed a bucket of long thin wide sticks in between the two of them. As long as this wasn't the fell-blood's first time treading the dusty halls of a library they'd know exactly what to do with these tools.

The blue fellblood kept reading quietly trying his best to wrap his head around the book struggling to get through even a chapter. It was less of an actual informational historical recounting of the founding of the nation and more of a tourist guide and basic historical facts that seemed less true and more to sell the fact how the royal family were chosen and how Charon was so great and its leaders made the country. Then there was mention about how they were chosen by the gods which Javal wasn’t sure was true. All and all it was a pretty weird read for Javal; he was trying his best to understand and take as much as he could from the book until he glanced at the nice fellow sitting across from him.
He looked as if he was in great anguish, his face twisting and contorting into a strange expression. He waited to say something before suddenly his face returned to normal as if nothing ever happened.
He had a look of concern and was about to voice his worry about the fellow before the other man reassured him his presence was indeed not a bother although his tone didn’t sound that way, “Thank you my friend although I indeed do not what these are for, are they to help one read? Still into your eyeballs to keep yourself asleep? Please friend tell me if you could”.

His savior, the fell-blood, spoke to him beyond just a greeting! The arrival of this one before him truly was some kind of amazing coincidence, thank the uncaring. Placing the tome he was reading to the side to pull the sticks to the center of his desk and give the fellow a better view of them. Reading more of these mundane, uninteresting, and personally ridiculously dry books was something he could not do at this moment. Explaining how one of these rods worked was something he could do in spades.
“These are really interesting little tools. You place these in the area where you took a book from and it will mark the place that it was so you don’t forget.” His tone became lighter, informative, and there were heavy notes of relief. Is this how his mentor felt when he taught him the spear? No. this small appreciation of a random passerby wrenching his mind free of the tedious text before could never compare to teaching…him.
“You can even write the names of the books on sticks so you can take multiple books without fear of losing their true places.” Quincy turned behind him as he said and pointed to the myriad of sticks he had placed in the shelves each with names belonging to a piece of literature.

Javal placed his book down on the table excited about this new stranger’s contraption; it was something he had never seen before.
“Woah I can just put this in a page and it’ll still be there when I open it? Saving a place in a book seems like a genius idea, the few times I open a book I tend to lose my place all the time. In most cases, I just start from the beginning of the book or just stop reading and try another day. This is super useful though I could read a million books now if I had one of these bad boys”.
His jaw dropped as the other man mentioned the fascinating ability to write on the sticks, “Friend, how did you even come across such a tool? You must be a genius to come up with such a system. May I buy some from you? They’d come in handy with this reading mission I get from that old lady outside about the recent stuff going on”.
He then shows the man the history book he was reading, “What brings you here friend? Are you some sort of studied scholar here in pursuit to add to your knowledge or something else”.

The praise felt unnecessary but at the same time filled the bearded scholar with a sense of satisfaction. Just the idea that he could bring something to someone, even something as superfluous as this, made him feel…good? This was a bit different. Had he forgotten what it felt like to bring someone the slightest bit of joy or the feeling of helping someone else earnestly? He had lost himself in the depths of his own grief and plunged deep into a cycle of inebriation and mundane tasks undertaken in a state of veisalgia to continue spinning his wheels. Quincy wiped his face as nonchalantly as possible. Enjoy the moment.
“Actually a friend taught me about it when I was still studying my craft. I keep some on hand whenever I know I’m going to a place such as this. They make greater undertakings such as this a bit more bearable. Take what you need and don’t concern yourself with payment.” A chuckle escaped his lips as the memory floated to the front of his mind. Those were better times and he felt somewhat of a debt to the gentleman for reminding him of better times.
“Ah she got you too then? Seems we walk with the same winds at our backs.” His chuckle became more of a laugh as he tilted his head to look at the book his new companion had. “To be entirely transparent with you I’m looking for something myself in these books. Something about an uncaring god, the god didn’t accept worship and gave no blessings.”

Javal’s eyes were filled with wonder as he listened in silence to the wise man speak about the gods and himself before speaking once more.
“Really mister? What friend? They must be a serious scholar to have such extreme knowledge such as this. What is your craft? Are you some sort of professional reader? I didn’t know that was an occupation but I suppose that’s what a scholar or researcher is, isn’t it? Although I took you for some sort of fighter when I first saw you but of course my mother always tells me not to judge a book by its cover, even if you are not a book and are indeed a person”.
“Thank you good sir”, Javal says talking about three not wanting to be so greedy but still wanting a few for his personal use.
“She indeed did get me as well, although I was sure it wasn’t windy outside was it?”, Javal asked with no understanding of figurative language.
“As for your search for this uncaring god, I don’t think I've heard of them before. What have you found or heard so far? Maybe I could help you out. It's the least I can do for you by giving me such a useful tool”.

Quincy couldn’t help but beam at the company of such an enjoyable person. His childlike sense of wonderment was refreshing to say the least. For a moment he felt far removed from all that ailed him before this man’s arrival.
“We were more so friends of convenience and we didn't keep in touch unfortunately. She was an interesting fellow though. Your first estimation of me was correct, my craft is the spear... or at least it was the spear before recent events happened. I took it so seriously I not only practiced it physically, I practiced imaginary scenarios in my head, and read every time my library had on the subject. My instructor was rigorous to say the least.” Quincy could wince at any moment as he relieved some of the more exhausting training he’d subjected himself too. Nobody should have to sleep with a weighted spear and run random practice drills.
A smirk crossed his lips as he shook his head. “I simply mean we share a common goal.” Quincy made a note to try and be more literal with his new acquaintance.
“My mother told me about this god when I was young. She was the only source of information I had on the subject. She would tell me not to pray and why not to. She told me that with a god that doesn’t care or interfere with the lives of mortals all we could do is live well.” His worlds carried a world of pain though he kept a slightly jovial expression as he looked the fell-blood in the eye.

The fellblood stared at the other man as he waited for him to finish speaking, his mother always tried to instill politeness in the young man.
“Well still a friend of convenience is a friend and I’m sorry you guys didn’t stay in touch. I hope you can someday talk to them again who knows what other interesting contraptions she has under her sleeve”.
His eyes are filled with excitement, “You’re a spearman? That’s amazing I knew you looked like a real fighter when I saw you I just didn’t want to assume. What do you mean before recent events? Are you still a fighter or have you decided to give it up? Woah that training sounds fun and intense, I was trained in the art of swordsmanship under Sensei Emeraldcutter my coat carries his sigil”.
Javal turns his back and points his thumbs at the sigil on his back a pair of two swords on his red coat.
“Who was your instructor? I can relate to having a rigorous teacher once Sensei Emeraldcutter fought a tiger during one of our training sessions when I was young”, he chuckles as he recounts the story, reminiscing fondly of memories from the past.
He then nods his head as the other man explains his language, “Ah makes sense, indeed we do then. An uncaring god whom you prayed to? Honestly, that god sounds pretty cool my friend as long as it wants the best for us that’s more than enough. I was raised to pray to Avasha and Salina considering I hail from Thorock, Dragon’s Cradle”.

A wave of emotions washed over Quincy as he listened to each and every word the fell-blood spoke. He was a bit sentimental as he thought back on his old friend. “If our paths were to cross again, I suppose I’d be happy? I’m not sure I don’t think it would really matter to either of us. It may sound sad, but we’ve grown beyond each other. If anything it is something to be celebrated.”
He couldn’t help but stroke his beard as a large grin stretched across his face. It wasn’t often he got the opportunity to talk about his craft and he couldn’t help but swell with pride. “A spearman through and through. As a young man I dreamed of being a legend of the pike. I’d hoped that my thrusts would be notable enough to end up in one of these tomes, but…” his town shifted as he thought of ‘recent events’ “My mother passed away. I never truly understood how much she meant to me until she was gone. Her passing changed me greatly.”
Up until this point Quincy had told no peer of what weight he was carrying. Why was this man different? Maybe it was his attitude, maybe it was the way he called him friend. Either way a sudden wind lifted his sails “My instructor was a family friend. Someone my father knew. When I told my parents I wanted to go to the martial academy they sent me to him instead. This is going to sound silly but I don’t know his actual name. I merely know him as ‘Uncle Fluffy’. My mother gave him the nickname and it stuck.”
A grin stretched his beard from ear to ear once more as he heard Thorock. “You’re from Thorock too? From my understanding you’re not supposed to pray to this uncaring god.”

Javal sat placing his book down and looked at the man sympathetic, “That’s okay my friend, things of that nature happen. You’re right! It is to be celebrated, for that means you and her have grown a lot and have become stronger in your regards”, he smiled, eagerness beaming off of him as he spoke.
The fellblood couldn’t help but just stay quiet and listened as he heard the man recount his spearmanship, “Whoa a legend you say? I knew you were formidable if that dream is anything to be considered which I will”, his voice then lowered as he tried his best to respond to the recent events the man spoke of, “I’m so sorry my friend to hear that, I hope that her spirit is having the best afterlife she can. You and your family have my deepest condolences and now I know you’re truly strong. After all, the strongest people aren’t the ones with the biggest muscles or the biggest weapons, it’s those with the biggest hearts. I understand not being grateful for someone until they are gone and I cannot give any advice about it. It is hard, it's difficult but what matters is that you remember them and are grateful for them now. It’s easy to be thankful for people when they’re here with us but what matters most is how we pay our respects and carry them with us after they’re gone”, Javal was being honest and trying to let the man know he understood.
He gave him a small smile before trying to continue with their conversation of training, “Uncle Fluffy? That sounds like an excellent name. I truly wish to meet this gentleman. You’re not supposed to pray to an uncaring god”.
His eyes widened as the other man revealed he also hailed from Thorock, “Whoa another Thorocker? It’s an honor! I was born and raised there . My mother and father run an inn called the Indigo Inn. Although I had to leave due to unforeseen circumstances”, he chuckles a bit remembering.

Perhaps the fell-blood was right. A small part of him hoped he was, though he’d never humor that part. To truly give himself that hope would set himself up for an unnecessary fall. Falls these days were far more detrimental than he’d ever want to admit. “Perhaps you’re right.” He said with a small sigh and even smaller smirk.
His gaze turned downward. A wave of shame washed over him. He knew for a fact he had done the opposite of everything that was said. He began taking in more booze than food, his spear had been sold to continue his bad habits, and he had been running from facing any of it with each sip. His hand began to shake, and in response he slowly clinched it into a fist. “She told me instead of praying that we’re supposed to live well. What does that mean? This is the only way I can think of to pay my respects to her and I don’t know how to do it. I know for a fact I’m not living well, because I simply live. To get out of bed when you awake because that’s all you know how to do.” His tone could only be described as crestfallen. To live well was a puzzle that his mother left him with that he seemed unable to solve. With the only piece of the puzzle he had was the ironclad truth that he was not living well.
Anyone hearing the name and thinking of the person had to smile. The centaur wasn’t exactly what you would call fluffy in the slightest. “Yeah, more taskmaster than uncle though.” He composed himself for a moment after that. “I’ve heard of the Indigo Inn, never been myself. When you’re a local there isn’t as much use for an Inn. The world truly is smaller than it seems.”
