The voice that came from Javal’s mouth was most definitely not Javal Zarrias.
“What the hell…” Morrigan muttered, glancing upwards. They were surprised to find that Javal’s form had shifted entirely in appearance, growing a foot in height and gaining considerably more muscle. Morrigan had only seen this kind of thing once before… in the snow-capped mountains of the World’s Crown, as a god took control of a man they called a friend.
Morrigan narrowed their eyes as they skidded to a halt, their tail swishing behind them.
The man who was most certainly not Javal raised his hand and fired off water projectiles straight at Nugget.
“Oi, that’s my bird! Watch what you’re doing!” Morrigan snapped, their demeanor shifting entirely in the face of this asshole whom they didn’t know or particularly care to know. Sure, something was wrong with her, and she was firing off bolts of fire at them… but that was their phoenix! One of the water bullets struck her in the side - Nugget let out a pained screech and swerved, pivoting towards the ground.
Morrigan swore under their breath in infernal, a surge of… something churning in the bottom of their gut. If they were more in touch with their feelings, they might even call it protective anger.
They stepped in front of the other fellblood, eyes icy with disdain. Even as short as they were, they held themselves with the aura of a king; their meager five feet felt larger than it was. Poking their finger into the fellblood’s chest, they spoke, “I am not sure who you are and I do not care. But if you harm my bird again, there is no hole you cannot hide in where I cannot find you. And if that day comes, let’s hope you don’t find out how it feels to face a godslayer without the use of your pretty little spells, hm?”
They turned on their heel and made their way to where Nugget had fallen, bending down to press a hand to soft phoenix down; they released a breath when they felt the soft rise and fall of Nugget’s chest. She was just unconscious. They lifted her in their arms and stomped away. They wouldn’t have time to drop her off at their wagon, so they settled for nestling her atop their bag and departing for the bar. Not-Javal could follow, or he couldn’t. Morrigan didn’t care. They had a bone to pick with whoever started this.
You could say whatever you wanted about Morrigan Moonweaver; they were a cheat, a fraud, reckless, prone to whimsy, and a pathological liar. But they were petty, and they always wanted to have the last laugh.
This bastard wouldn’t know what was coming for him.

“Sorry kid it attacked me first, what do you want me to do? Get scorched by its firebolt just because your birds are controlled by whatever dirtbag we’re dealing with”, the man remarks snarkily.
He heard their infernal curse under their breath and chuckled at their frustration as they poked him in the chest. The man was not impressed or intimidated in the slightest as the other fellblood in front of him puffed up their chest and threatened him.
“Cool glad to see we’re on the same page kid, I wouldn’t have to hurt your bird if you could control it better. Don’t start whining and complaining to me about your bird. All I'm doing is keeping myself safe. Don’t try to threaten me kid with your annoying words because I don’t believe ‘em. I won’t be hiding anyway kid if a fight’s what you want then I’ll easily molly-whoop you no spells needed. I can even take you on with this fool’s body, it’s funny you call yourself a god slayer with no merit because I’m a fucking devil killer who escaped hell itself. I’ve seen and fought against things that kids like you would cry and piss your pants at so don’t speak to me as if you can do something to me because you can’t”, the fellblood as curt and brutal as ever retorted.
He was neutral on Morrigan himself; he'd seen a glimpse of them the last time Morrigan and Javal visited Javal’s grandfather. He thought the purple clown was funny; they had fools like them in his gang for entertainment. He followed behind the irate fellblood finding their frustration and anger at him of all people amusing. He couldn’t understand why the purple clown was angry at him. After all, shouldn't they be more mad at the dude who made him attack their bird in self-defense? Eh, who cared not him that's for sure. He held his hands behind his head and walked over to the bar. He then got a funny idea and charged some more water into his gullet. He then opened his mouth and shot back-to-back bullets of water (1) towards the bar hoping to hit the bastard at least once.

It was worth noting that this was hardly the first time Morrigan Moonweaver - king of liars and fakes and overinflated egos - had been threatened, or talked down to by someone bigger and stronger than them. And as they stood there, with their hands on their hips, this cocky asshole snickering at them and calling them kid like he thought it might make Morrigan cry and run off the playground, they smirked as they realized exactly what kind of person they were dealing with. “Ooh, big tough guy, are you?” They taunted. Maybe this guy was accustomed to bending all over and kissing the ground he walked on because he was some big, ooky-spooky spirit, but Morrigan had never been reverent a day in their life. “I’m shaking in my sandals. Wait, no I’m not. If you were so great, you wouldn’t have died in the first place.”Devil killer, my ass. He couldn’t even kill a bird right.“But, by all means. If you’re so insecure you feel the need to brag about your accomplishments to cover your shame up at getting spooked by a bird, then give me your curriculum vitae. Just don’t come complaining to me when I don’t care.” They turned on their heel, considering that done and taken care of. The big ghost could do whatever he wanted to stroke his massive ego - he could possess Javal all he wanted. Morrigan was quite sick of being jerked around by dead things who still thought they had a say in this mortal life. In all honesty they perhaps should have expected the damn spirit to brute force his way into the tavern. Alas, they only felt it a second too late from the slight tingle that ran up their spine, the hair on their arms standing on edge - the taste of mana potent in the air for the briefest of moments before it was unleashed in a burst of water straight at the tavern’s walls. High-pressurized liquid shot through the air and the building’s walls with the force of a crossbow bolt, breaking apart the foundation - Morrigan couldn’t see inside, but the sudden spike of pressure in the air said enough. They’d brought the fight to whatever rested inside, and now they were about to learn exactly what they provoked. The air grew sharp and heavy once more as that same, oppressive voice was objected straight into their mind. Morrigan stifled another gasp at the words. YOU SHOULD HAVE HEEDED MY WARNING. And where not-Javal’s aqua bullets were like a crossbow bolt, the sudden force that exploded the tavern wall outwards was like a fireball. Morrigan didn’t catch themselves in time - they were thrown to the sand, ears ringing from the force of the blow. Smoke and chunks of debris were flung every which way, pelting the air like hail from a smiting god. But the creature that emerged from the hole was no deity at all. Its face, a deep and mottled purple, completely distorted by years spent in whatever cave it had crawled out from. Ragged robes framed a thin, gaunt figure - at the top of which was an enormous head, with tentacles protruding from its front that made Morrigan sick. It wasn’t a wizard or spellcaster at all that had taken this town hostage. It was a chthonian.

“Yeah, I am, and shut up kid you don’t know a single thing. Oh, yer still crying about the bird if I knew you were gonna wail like this I shoulda just let us get burnt. I know I could take the heat”, the fellblood curtly responded as he walked towards the tavern.
After firing off his rapid-fire water projectiles he yells out, “Did that get ya? Or do I have to fire off some more to get ya out here and fight?”.
The fellblood smashes his fists together in anticipation, this fucker dared wake him up from his slumber. He was going to show them what happens when little weasels try to mess with a bear. Before he could fire off some more aqua bullets the same voice that woke him echoed again.
He grabbed the side of his head grinning and shouting, “Fuck your warning you lame coward I’m here and I’m ready to beat the crap out of you”.
He saw the tavern wall explode, his excitement increasing, he hoped that whoever this bastard was, they’d offer him a good fight. He smashed his feet into the dirt vines and plants grounding him to the floor as the wind and debris hit his body. The fellblood looked ahead as some sort of weird tentacle fucker came out looking ready to rumble.
He scoffs as he de-grounds himself from the floor and yells, “Really? Is some squid dude the one running things here? Well, color me surprised. Enough talking though let’s get to the part where I kick your ass”.
Not-Javal doesn’t waste any time and throws his katana (1) at the squid’s head, his blade whirling in the air as it spins. He sprints forward while gathering ice magic shaping it into a glacial spear (2) in his right hand right before he gets close to him he jumps back and throws the ice spike right at the fellow’s abdomen.

Okay. Morrigan had to hand it to him. There were few stupid enough to challenge a chthonian like that. Morrigan knew little about the confounding beings aside what they’d read in their research - chthonians were aberrant creatures, and one of the few with the curious ability to leech and resist magic. It was a good thing that Morrigan didn’t have any. They pulled themselves to their feet as not-Javal immediately took to the offensive… and perhaps it would have worked if his opponent were not stronger than your average creature. As it were, the chthonian raised its hand and stopped the sword mid-air, and the ice spike melted before it could strike the creature’s midsection. [1,2]YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO TRY BETTER THAN THAT. The chthonian raised its arm, hand dissolving and morphing until it became a writing, tentacle-like appendage. Long enough to strike and coil around not-Javal if he didn’t move out of the way. Morrigan whistled to themselves, taking a step back. Javal was a companion whose trust Morrigan wanted to keep, but along the same vein, they weren’t particularly inclined to help this twisted version of him, even if they were the same person. Yes, Morrigan was that petty. You know what they say. Not my monkey, not my circus. They were about to step away when another grasping tentacle was flung their direction, wrapping around their torso and hoisting them into the air. NO WITNESSES. MY MACHINATIONS ARE BEYOND YOUR UNDERSTANDING. YOU WILL NOT INTERFERE WITH MY PLANS. Morrigan huffed, the grasping tentacle coiling around their torso and crushing the very air from their lungs. This was dangerous. Other lives Morrigan didn’t care about or think much on unless it impacted their own, but now, this was personal. They raised their arm, triggering the mechanism on their gilded arm bracer - the sword slid out, metal gleaning under the Zeinavian sun. Their lips were split in a grin, as if they’d already won this battle. “It looks to me like you’ve got a bunch of zombies digging for buried treasure in the wasteland. Didn’t anyone ever teach you the real riches were the friends we made along the way?”They brought down the blade, stabbing it into the tentacle. At the same time, they swiped their tail upwards, the hidden blade cutting through the bottom - a dual attack. It cut through the tentacle, freeing Morrigan from the thing’s clutches, for now. They hit the sand and ducked back, putting distance between themselves and the creature. Well, you know what they also said. In for a penny, in for a pound. If there was one thing you could trust to be consistent, it was their inconsistency. There was one thing they could do, at least. They weren’t going to get in the middle of battle but if this weirdo was determined to kick the chthonian’s ass then he could make himself useful by being a human shield for Morrigan while the charlatan figured out how to disable this thing. May as well piss it off. Morrigan was quite good at that. “By the good name of the Wizard of the Wastes, release your hold on these people! Or else it’s going to get messy.” They were also quite good at hamming it up for the drama.

The fellblood’s grin only grew wider with excitement as the stupid squid managed to repel his attacks.
“Good you weird-faced bastard, if that would have killed you I’d feel bad. Give me a fight that shows me this generation hasn’t gotten weak”.
He was about to charge another attack before he was gripped by the creature’s long tentacle arm thing.
He tried wrestling and squirming his way out of the foe’s grip but found it pointless. He lowered himself closer to the ground enough to touch the sand below. The creature’s grasp was tight and firm, starting to squeeze his stomach and making it hard to breathe. However, the man wasn’t about to go down this easily and touched the earth below shaping it and creating a pair of fighting knives (1) he used to cut off his binds.
Not-Javal jumped back before glancing over at Morrigan and proceeded to point laughs before they escaped. The fellblood took a moment to stretch before his gaze sharpened towards the opponent in front of him.
“Alright you slippery coward show me whatcha got, ignore that purple one I’m the one here that’ll give ya a good fight”.
He then raised his hand making the sand in front of him look alive as it rose (2) and began spinning faster and faster around the chthonian the molecules sharpening and creating a small maelstrom of sand.

While the aberration who had stolen Javal’s countenance tousled with another aberration on the sandy floor, Morrigan Moonweaver took a step back and assessed the situation. Their knowledge was scattered between texts and scrolls skimmed during their research; monsters who bent reality to their will and rejected magic. A kindred spirit, if you will. But why had one slithered so far aboveground? And what were they doing, making people dig holes?
In all honesty, which Morrigan was doing a rather bang-up job of learning at this point, they were considering leaving the impostor Javal to his own devices to deal with this alone. Especially considering their attacks seemed to be doing nothing. That was the plan, until…
“Ignore that purple one. I’m the one here that’ll give ya a good fight.”
The ignorance! The audacity! Morrigan Moonweaver might have been a coward and a liar and a cheat and everything under the sun one might acquaint with a creature of dubious origin and habit, but ignorable? Morrigan Moonweaver was probably one of the least forgettable people in the whole of Charon! They reached for the blackened blade at their hip, pulling out the wicked curved sword, which seemed to sing as Morrigan moved. Their stature was slight, but the way they moved across the Zeinavian sands, the way they spun the sworddancer’s blade, Morrigan was no stranger to making themselves appear larger than life.
Not-Javal spun the sands to his advantage, and perhaps his attempt at a trap might have worked… if it weren’t for the magic resistance that simmered in the Chthonian’s veins. The sandy attack died in midair, the force behind the blow petering out before it could bind the creature properly.[1] The Chthonian hissed and spat in a language Morrigan could not understand, three of its tentacles rising, arcane energy filling the air with a strange pressure.
The Unweaver vibrated in Morrigan’s hand.
And then, light burst from each one of the Chthonian’s tentacles; an orb of fire and wind charging straight for Not-Javal, and an orb of water hurtling Morrigan’s direction.[2]
Morrigan flicked their wrist and sliced the spell into ribbons.[3]
“You’re the one who’s going to have to try better than that.” Morrigan smirked, cocky as the day they were born. With their free hand, Morrigan cupped their palm, the universal gesture for bring it on. The bells on their wrist jingled, the spell of a Zeinavian dancer. Or perhaps… the grace of a circus performer. Either way, their provocation and their alluring movement had grabbed the Chthonian’s attention.[4] All eyes were on Morrigan, just as they liked it. They took a step forward, the Unweaver hungry for more magic in their grip. “Why don’t you try going toe to toe with a real challenge? I promise I won’t just keep slinging useless spells your way.”

Not-Javal’s maelstrom of sand quickly was disrupted and disappointed into nothing, this damned squid was a real pain in the ass with its ability to fuck with his magic. Looks like he was gonna have to do this thing the old-fashioned way. Which was to beat this weird fellow with his fists and weapons until it stopped moving. But before he could start his assault Not-Javal is immediately put on the defensive with two orbs of fire and wind blasting straight for him. He quickly slams his fists into the sand below and a large block of ice (1) rises blocking both orbs and dissipating due to the heat and wind. Man, this guy was really annoying him with so many tricks and weird attacks but at least it was an entertaining fight. The fellblood smirked though as he saw the little purple brat start to act bigger than their britches.
“Yeah yeah keep talking clown”, he chuckles readying himself for his next move he felt the cold feeling overcome his throat before opening his mouth and spraying a cone of ice (2) straight for the Chthonian quickly sprinting forward as fast as he could holding his lightning spear in hand. Javal hadn’t used it since his last encounter with Danae swearing off its dangerous properties but Not-Javal didn’t care he was gonna beat this thing however he had to do it.

Why the hell was this guy still using magic to try and beat this thing?
Morrigan pursed their lips as the possessed fellblood threw up a wall of ice to destroy the beams of light, and throwing up a breath of ice. Technically, it was not a spell. It did not bounce harmlessly off the Chthonian, but because the elemental breath was primordial in nature, and the Chthonian an ancient aberration, it did not kill the creature the way it might slay a man.
Even Morrigan’s distraction keeping it within a trance would only work so long while Not-Javal was ragging on it. As the breath froze at its limbs, causing it to recoil and hiss in pain. Several things happened at once.
The Chthonian moved to retaliate against the bigger threat-
Morrigan dropped their trance and grabbed the Unweaver -
And as the Chthonian and Not-Javal leapt at one another, Morrigan dove forward with a dancer’s grace, the prowess of one intimately familiar with the sand. Their sandals were light, Unweaver singing in their hands with a potent magic. Bells jingled as the charlatan spun and cut off two of the Chthonian’s tentacles in one smooth movement.[1] The Chthonian screamed in pain, and at the same time, Morrigan activated the moon tattoo on their hand, vines sprouting from the enchanted ink, ensnaring the Chthonian in their grasp.[2]
“Its neck!” Morrigan screamed, holding tight to the vines with all their might while the Chthonian bucked and writhed. For all its telekinetic prowess, its physical body was quite weak. “Cut it off at its neck! End this!” 1. Blade Dance 2. Witcher Pitcher Tattoo

“Yeah that’s right you damned octopus give me all ya got and don't hold back”, Not-Javal would exclaim as the two monstrous forces would leap at each other ready to tear each other apart. However, as he was mid-jump holding his lightning spear in his hands and ready to clash against the strength of the Chthonian he glanced down and saw the little purple one play their little clever tricks. Purple goo would splatter as Morrigan would slice through the fellow’s tentacles and instead of lunging at him the beast simply cried for its lost limbs. Quickly a mean-spirited smirk appeared on the fellblood’s face as he saw it get ensnared by the lavender clown's binds.
“You don’t gotta tell me twice”, he yells, gripping the lightning spear and Theseus in his hands quickly jumping into the air. A mix of lightning and water would pass through the air in front of him as he flew a mad grin on his face as he saw the look of confusion and terror from the Chthonian in front of him.
He then crossed both blades and sliced (1) through the Cthonian’s neck cutting it clean off as he landed behind it and turning back to say, “Told ya it’d be your funeral squid face” seeing its head drop to the floor.
He then turned to face Morrigan chuckling with amusement, “You did well out there bucko thanks for the help that pesky anti-magic was getting fucking annoying”.

Morrigan flashed a smug grin at the insinuation that they had merely helped take care of the Chthonian. Puh-lease. They were the main reason this thing was squid ink on the sand, thank you very much! This guy had been the one continuously slinging spells at a creature who’d shown to be endlessly resistant to magic.
The fact that they lacked the power to make a finishing blow that strong was beside the point.
They flipped their braid over their shoulder, as cocky as ever. The Chthonian’s writhing movements were coming to a halt as the last dregs of life left its body. Around them, the innocent people of the village were beginning to stir, the hold on their minds having been eliminated. The charlatan was less concerned with the civilians, more focused on the creature in front of them. They brandished the Unweaver, kneeling down to cut off one of the smaller tentacles on its person.
A Chthonian was a rare little critter. Morrigan would be remiss if they didn’t collect this piece for an alchemical component.
They pulled out a piece of wax paper wrapped the tentacle in it, sealing it with a bit of some sticky substance from their potion kit. Yes, a rare find indeed.
They stood, shooting the man who was no longer Javal a wink. He still hadn’t gone back to normal, but… eh, he’d probably be fine. Morrigan had seen him lose himself before in a similar manner before, and he’d been right as rain in the aftermath. Besides, Morrigan needed to get back to their wagon. They had potions to brew, and they were quite interested in the properties of this parasite.
“They’re going to think you were the one to save the day, but I think the two of us both know who the real victor was here.” And they weren’t talking about the Chthonian. “I’m off to take care of this little parasite, and you’ve got a gaggle of confused villagers to take care of. Ta.”
And thus exited Morrigan Moonweaver, stage right. They’d normally stay around and chat, but they didn’t feel like being the one to comfort a handful of emotional villagers who had pesky gaps in their memory. They’d miss the fame, but they’d gotten something much more valuable out of this.

Not-Javal would quickly walk over to the dead Cthonian’s body and kick it in the side for good measure. Both parts were for the sake of disrespect as well as checking if it was dead, and on that account, it appeared it was. He’d reached down and cut off one of its tentacles, tucking it into his pocket. If that purple clown took one must mean it’s important so he’d rather just snag a piece of this squid here. Hell who knows maybe it’d be a tasty thing to eat but knowing whose body he was in, it’d probably go missing the second Javal’s consciousness would return.
He turned around to look at the little purple clown that shot him a wink, an amused grin appeared on his face, “Yeah I’m glad that we’re both on the same page here, that you admit I was the real victor in all this. It takes real guts to admit that you’re weak and wrong so I respect your honesty young one. And huh?”, he’d ask in confusion before the now awakened villagers would start swarming around him.
All asking questions without a sense of personal space, Not-Javal was not a people person so he raised his blade to try to get them off him. However, as soon as he touched Theseus he felt his consciousness start fading away, his time was up it would seem. Suddenly Javal was back as he gasped for air and stumbled backwards holding his head in confusion.
“Huh? What’s going on? What happened? Where’s friend Morrigan? Why is there dead Chthonian all over the floor?”, he would get no answer as the villagers crowded him once more looking for him to help them out.
And with nothing else to answer him he’d hang around the villagers for a few days eventually leaving with just a piece of squid’s tentacle to commemorate the strange unknown day.
