This whole situation didn’t make sense. Finding a giant rock should never be this difficult. While he was peeling himself off the bar floor he’d overhead some pirates saying whoever could clear some of the boulders that fell from the sky after the eruption would have a more fortunate future before them. After questioning them on where one was they sent him to a dwarven shopkeep. The shopkeep went on a rather crestfallen tale about how he lost a cart of wares to one of those “damned falling pebbles”...then sent him to the cart driver. The cart driver happened to be nursing a head injury after the whole ordeal, in hindsight he was lucky that’s all that happened. The driver's wife sent him to their oldest son. The kid was learning how to take over the cart when his dad decided to retire and happened to be with the cart that day. Apparently he was grabbing a drink at the local pub. After some backtracking, cursing, and a few stops to glare at his own reflection trying to figure out where things all went wrong he finally got the information from the kid. The rock had apparently landed on a crossroads a couple hours walk out east. The information was good and that’s how he made it to this point. Quincy stood on the side of the road staring down the giant rock, his head throbbing every half minute or so, a reminder of his lack of foresight when he’d order his last drink or two. The crossroads itself was rather unremarkable. The sign was under the rock so unless you knew where you were going you had a fifty percent chance of getting where you were going. The area around was flat and unmemorable. The road had a strong “I go to the middle of nowhere vibe” but pay is pay. “Now how do I get you off the road?” Quin murmured to himself as he raised a hand to the rock. The warmth was honestly a little enjoyable. From that he could tell it wasn’t too hot to touch but it wasn’t like he was going to move it by hand anyway. —------ Quest Name: That's a nice boulder
Participants: Two or more
Location: Dragon's Cradle
Post Requirements: 5 post per person, 200 words per post

Description: The recent eruption at Mt. Drakolt has caused hundreds of massive, flaming rocks to soar across the eastern coast of Charon. The primary roads and countryside around the Ashlands, Dragon's Cradle and Zeinav have all been littered with the giant rocks. They block travel and trade routes, as well as disrupt the local wildlife population. Some have landed in local farms, destroying important crops for the winter, and some have even landed on unsuspecting homes or wagons. Adventurers are needed to help rid the east of these giant stones, some still extremely hot from their time inside the volcano. How you get rid of them is entirely up to you, you can move them to a better suited area, or break them up into tiny, more manageable pieces. It does not matter how you dispose of the boulders, as long as they are removed.

“A good question.” Responds someone from behind him. A small boy, half-elven, with messy hair and, in his opinion, a rather charming demeanor.
Vinny has heard the rumors. It was hard not to, hearing the pirates talk, and this man was not making a secret as to what he was trying to accomplish.
Of course, the pirates were full of shit. There was no gold, no luck to be found, and definitely no payment. Though, Vinny wasn’t going to tell him that. Instead, Vinny would smile at the guy, and chuckle lightly. “We’re here for the same reason, it seems.” He approaches the rock, and rests his hand on it.
The incidents have been causing multiple issues for his city. Given, Sky Peak village wasn’t somewhere many people went. A lot like this area, if you didn’t know where you were going, it was far too easy to get lost. Given, with this in the way, even those who knew the safest route to his town would now simply start refusing to go. This was not something Vinny could simply allow. His city needed trade, after all.
He turned to the man. “Any ideas, hot shot?”
He was having way too much fun with this. Though, to the man, the little boy gave barely any emotion.

Sylvari was never more grateful for the icy magic coating the bottoms of her feet [Frozen Feet], allowing her to fly through the rather bland landscape on the way to her destination. Once again, she was on the hunt for rocks from the recent eruption, causing problems with trade and travel. How many godsdamned rocks can a mountain spew? I highly doubt this outing will be as interesting as my first excursion with Ube. Sylvari grinned thinking back to the memory of fighting the elemental with her friend. Oh to be fighting instead of just breaking up rocks and moving them off the road, but we don't get to choose the needs of the people. This concern is just as valid as a predatory monster, and, if the merchants are to be believed, more deadly when winter comes.
It wasn't all that long before Sylvari came to the crossroads where the massive boulder sat, having crushed the signpost and fully blocking the intersection. She came to a stop and allowed the ice coating her feet to melt away. Sylvari raised a gauntleted hand to the porcelain skin of her face, resting it in a thinking position on her chin as her half-veil rustled lightly in the light wind.
As Sylvari circled the large rock to find the best angle to deal with this problem, she saw two men joking with each other about how to deal with the same problem. Well, one was joking at the other's expense: a boy that Sylvari recognized from her recent adventure in the city. She smiled and walked forward to them.
"Vinny! Pleasure to see you again, so soon after our parting. I thought you didn't leave Sky Peak. Have I inspired you to branch out?" Sylvari's impish smile was clear to anyone save her target to hide genuine warmth and affection, but she knew it would goad the boy. "And who is your friend? I don't believe we've met." Sylvari's blackened full plate made a light sound of metal against metal as she extended a hand to the stranger. "Sylvari Dawnsage, a pleasure."

Something about the silence of this rather drab place had grown on him like moss on a great oak. They didn’t mind each other and in fact it had become the new norm. One might even grow to enjoy the sounds of the wind dancing occasionally over the landscape. A man, a rock, and an otherwise unappreciated scene. Had he the artistic talents he’d be able to paint this scene so others might also find something in it as he had.
Yet as they say all good things must come to an end. A boy's voice broke through the silence like a child’s ball thrown through a window. Quincy remained silent, his eyes wincing a bit at the pitch of the voice, another painful reminder of the importance of water during a night out. Before he could even begin to dream of piecing back together his window of silence the boy spoke again.
“So it would seem.” to say his voice sounded unenthusiastic would be an understatement. There was no real time for him to entertain a kid. Slowly turning to regard the boy in full Quincy gave him a stern questioning look. “Look kid, shouldn't you be somewhere falling in love or eating your weight in your mother’s cooking?” And before he got much of a chance to retort to the kid another one appeared.
This one was different and sparked more curiosity. To be honest a tumbleweed would be more interesting than a kid calling him hotshot. Was she poking fun at the boy? They apparently knew each other and his already ‘playful nature’ toward him was enough for him to go off of. The sound of metal against metal caused a reflexive wince in pain as his head throbbed. Maybe they didn’t notice? He reached forward and firmly clasped Sylvari’s forearm.
“Quincy Demir. Pleasures mine.” He took a second to glance at ‘Vinny’. “You know this kid? And kid, don't call me hot shot.” his arm extended to lay against the boulder allowing him to apply his weight in a regulated manner. They could converse all day but the boulder needed to be moved. Working and talking was something he was capable of doing.

Ooh! This person clearly didn’t want any help from Vinny. Unfortunately, that wasn’t going to happen. Vinny smirked as he listened to the man’s response - Eating his weight in his mother’s cooking? Vinny couldn’t help but chuckle. “What mother?” He responded, with a bit of a shit-eating grin.
When Sylvari popped up, he watched the two exchange pleasantries, and rolled his eyes at the man’s formality. He smiled at Sylvari, shrugging in response. “Me, leave Sky Peak? Not with all the new responsibilities I suddenly have. Thanks for that, by the way.” He answered, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. “Lorelai is doing her part, in case you are wondering.” He added, his expression falling a bit at the mention of his newfound colleague.
“No, it turns out that this is one of the main roads up to Sky Peak. We leave it like this, my kids and I aren’t getting fed for another week… So here I am, fixing the problem.” He gestures to the rock, and the sort of funny scene of the other guy trying, unsuccessfully, to push it by himself. “Any ideas, Justiciar?” His tone was a bit teasing again, but the question was serious, for he himself had no ideas.

A genuine smile graced Sylvari's face, as she reached over to tousle Vinny's hair, despite knowing he hated that. "Ever the diligent guardian. I'm glad we found the right man for the job." She looked over to Quincy and nodded, a fond smile still on her face from interacting with Vinny. "He's a good man. Despite his impish demeanor, if he is here, it means this boulder is putting his kids in some type of danger, and I know he'll go through hells and high water to make it right." She threw a knowing look to Vinny, before moving toward the large rock to consider it.
"Seems to me too large to reasonably push, even with the three of us working together. If we can break it down into more manageable chunks, I have some magic that will assist with the transportation." As Sylvari spoke, she raised a finger to demonstrate the icy arcana swirling around it to emphasize her point.
"Nothing for it then. A bit of hard work is a great way to start the day." She unslung the warhammer she carried from where it rested on her back, wielding it in one hand [Knight, Master of Combat], where a lesser man would have needed two, as she approached the boulder. A careful observer would note that Sylvari's frosty magics seemed to have infused her weapon itself [Spell Blade, Arcane Soul], as the head of the instrument swirled with a miniature blizzard, though she showed no signs of concentrating on a spell. She brought down her hammer hard on the rock surface, creating a crack, that, while initially small, began to spiderweb across the surface, fracturing other portions of the obstacle.

Quincy’s jaw tightened at Vinny’s question. 'What mother?' The grin on the boy’s face baffled him. Was he just being strong and he’d lost his mother? Had he never known the love of a carrying mother’s warmth? Maybe he’d just been disowned? All these questions came to Quincy in a flash but he figured it best to let sleeping dogs lie. Silence felt like a good option as the two began discussing matters that were frankly none of his business. Though they raised questions that he was itching to have answered. This kid had kids of his own? The idea of it felt like the blind leading the blind.
Quincy’s eyebrows raise and his gaze fell to the ground in an expression that can only be described as “If you say so” as the Justiciar(?) vouched for the lad. Was she a Justiciar? These two became more and more interesting by the moment. Quincy stepped away from the boulder as Sylvari began to take the lead. “Yeah I thought as much judging by the size alone. You’ve got magic? Good news. Looks like we’re in luck.” To be entirely honest Quincy wasn’t sure at all how he’d move the boulder had these two not shown up. He’d never let them know that though.
Backing up a bit more as he watched her heft her hammer. Her hammer slammed against the boulder and Quincy found himself understanding how the boulder felt as the back of his skull felt like it cracked along with the stone. Yet another reminder of his poor choices, and truly at this point this hangover felt more like predetermined karma for his underestimation of Vin. He Gently caressed his temples in a fruitless attempt to sooth what ailed him “Guess I’ll just help with the clean up. Stupid question but would putting water in the cracks help at all?”

As the two conversed, and she tussled his hair, she glared a little at her for a moment, though was clearly not upset. It seemed in character for her to mess with him like that, and he didn’t mind it so much from her.
“To be fair, I can’t really help with much either…” he notes. He was also unsure of what he was going to do if these two didn’t show up. In either case, he seemed relieved that Sylvari showed up. As she pulled out the hammer, he stepped back, watching as she crushed the boulder. He was impressed, but not surprised.
Vinny glanced over at Quincy. The two clearly didn’t get off to a good start - And Vinny could tell he was dealing with some sort of ailment. Given his attitude, Vinny couldn’t help but be amused at his misfortune. He saw the questions he had when he and Sylvi were conversing, and he had no intentions on explaining. The man clearly didn’t want to hear it before, so why would Vinny waste his time now? But at least he was slightly more useful than Vinny in the current situation. “Water might help? Might loosen some cracks.”

After a good few swings of the hammer had created sizeable fractures over the greater portion of the rock's surface, Sylvari stepped back to survey the damage she had done and paused to listen to her companions' input. She nodded her head in agreement with their assertions.
"That's a fine idea, if you have the resources. In fact, there's a bit of magic I know that could expedite this process quite a lot if we could make a single fissure large enough."
Sylvari's tone was confident and positive, but internally she harbored mixed feelings about her offer. The spell in question was of a darker art: one that she had only come to understanding of recently, as she had begun embracing more of the beast within. In truth, she had never attempted to cast the spell, but an isolated area on a non-living target seemed ideal practice if she was to include the magic in her regular repertoire.
She delivered a few more swings before deciding to act fatigued, for Quincy's benefit. Vinny might know the secret of her nature, and was surprisingly accepting of it, even seeing it directed towards his one-time associates, but she was always dubious of providing strangers a reason to mistrust her. She was acutely aware of the validity of the objection, as well, so the deception was a hard, if necessary, ritual.

The three of them looked like the start of a bad joke. How many people does it take to displace a boulder? A feeling of uselessness poured over Quincy like the rains during a thunderstorm and his eyes darted toward the road home. The Justiciar didn’t need his help, but there was a tankard of ale somewhere that could use a hand and dry throat. Was he living well? He shifted his weight and as he did so felt a sloshing at his hip. An eyebrow raised as he began to investigate.
His hand was met with a familiar feeling of smooth supple leather cool to the touch from the contents. The mystery item was a waterskin he’d had for a while now. Without a second thought he removed the waterskin from his hip and let out a small sigh of relief. The container was filled to brim with fresh water. A preventative he should have used the night before but yesterday's forgetfulness would prove to be today’s boon.. “Keep forgettin I have this on me.” His voice came out as gruff mumblings under his breath as he poured the contents into the cracks that were made. In part he hoped they didn’t hear him.
Sylvari seemed burnt out after all the work she’d put into breaking the boulder. Quin’s eyes gave her a sorrowful look betraying his rather stern demeanor. How he wished he could have done more to lighten the young woman’s burdens. He and Vinny both had to do better. No one person should have to shoulder the majority of the work he felt. Yet he felt any words of praise or apology on the subject would be to his own benefit not hers.
“This might be an odd question, but would you both say you live…well?” The question felt odd in his mouth and even odder to hear out loud. Instinctively his tongue made it’s way around his mouth as if to hastefully disinfect the areas that question had been.

Oh, Sylvari. He shot her a knowing look, aware that she was trying to help the rude man save face. He felt the glance on him, and looked over to see him giving Sylv a pitying look. He honestly couldn’t help but smirk a little. Still, he played along, sighing in exasperation, acting as if he was annoyed that he had to show any kind of effort. He pushed himself up and walked up to the boulder, testing it to see if he could begin to pull any of the pieces out. Unfortunately, he could not. So instead, he examined it for a moment.
Vinny stepped back and held his hand toward the boulder. All the two could hear was the slice of air around him for a moment, as two spiral strikes of air slammed into a soft spot for the rock. (Air Bullets). He would do this a couple more times, trying to weaken the boulder the best he could. The water was definitely helping to soften up the boulder a bit as well - They were definitely getting somewhere. The cracks in the boulder were on their way to breaking the damn thing in two.
He was momentarily distracted by Quincy’s question. He paused to look at him with a hint of confusion. “Well? What do you mean by well? Well for ourselves or well for others?” He questioned. It was sort of an existential inquiry, wasn’t it? “For myself, I could… Definitely be doing better. But I’m not living for myself. I have a whole group of people to worry about nowadays so… For them? I don’t know. It’s not up to me to decide if I’m doing well enough for them. They deserve better, and I am unfortunately unable to provide such for them.” He looked momentarily sad, though he quickly looked away from both of them in hopes neither one of them noticed as he composed himself, and continued to bludgeon the boulder with air bullets.

Sylvari's eyes flared in surprise from beneath her veil, [Chaos Touched] sensing the swelling of sky arcana from within Vinny. She was impressed at both the ingenuity of the technique, to be applied in this way, as well as the not-insignificant power that she sensed. She gave him a teasing smile before speaking.
"Is that a new skill you've acquired, or were you holding out on me during our last meeting, darling?" Her words were accusatory, but within, Sylvari felt only relief, knowing that Vinny was expanding his repertoire for both his town and the children he had within his care: a sentiment that was reflected in the man's own words as he answered Quincy's surprise question.
Sylvari found herself nodding along as Vinny answered, a small, proud smile on her face. She was ever surer that she had left the village in good hands. As Vinny finished speaking, and attention was turned to her, Sylvari made a show of thinking about her response. Idly, she noted that requisite progress had been made on cracking the boulder sufficient to implement her plan. Sylvari decided to end this phase of their work before answering.
She made motion of gathering and fostering an invisible ball of arcana between her swirling hands, letting it swell until it was the size of her chest. Then, she thrust the energy toward the boulder, lifting her hands to the sky once the magic was firmly lodged within the crack the trio had made. [Death Wall] With the cacophonous sound of splintering rock, a wall of writhing skeletons erupted from within the boulder, bony hands pressing and clawing against the obstacle, further splitting the two halves. Such were the animated dead's force that several smaller sections of the rock were hewn from the main stone of the two halves. Sylvari quickly dismissed the wall, the bones crumbling to dust in a matter of moments, as it drifted away on the wind.
Sylvari did her best not to seem embarrassed by her show of power and was met with middling success, only the slightest blush showing on her pale features. She cleared her throat and quickly began her response, hoping to breeze past the display of dark artistry.
"My answer is much the same as Vinny's, if perhaps broader in scope. My people have a ritual, a coming-of-age ceremony wherein we forsake pursuing the betterment of ourselves to focus our energy on bringing that progress to the world." Sylvari paused briefly, recalling the words of her vigil beginning as if they were spoken but moments ago. "'This I pledge my oath to: that I die to myself, that I may live for others. It is no longer I who live, but an armament of justice I shall be for the good of all I meet.' Well, that's the ideal anyway, we strive towards perfection in the hopes we may one day reach it."
Sylvari felt a little silly sharing such imperious words with those who had not grown up in her culture, but they blazed within her heart with the certainty of truth more than anything else she had ever experienced, so she was glad to relay them overall. Smiling softly, she looked to Quincy. "And you, dear one? What of your own life? One shouldn't ask a question without being prepared to answer in kind."

Both of them had magic? This realization made sure Quincy was the odd man out. Wasn’t it enough that they had already known each other? Now he felt left out in the fact he was the only boring one there. Well…he brought the water. The sight of the way Vinny had decided to attack the situation gave him a feeling that said ‘I should back up’. With a wide couple of steps back Quin found himself a relatively safe spot and crouched down low. As low as these two paragon’s of pebble producing power made him feel at least.
Before a rebuttal to the question could be formed the boy had already begun to answer both. Instinctively Quincy’s hand met his beard as he began to think on the answer he was given. The expression that found its way to the face of the young adult was etched into Quin’s mind as if carved from stone. That profound sadness if only for a moment. Would the boy have given a different answer if he was unfettered? Would the way he views his responsibilities change them? The woman’s gestures gave off the feeling of approval she may believe the boy lives well.
The Justiciar then began to use some magics that had yet been witnessed by these seasoned eyes. A feeling crept up his spine that spelled out the work dark and as the hairs on the back of his neck stood tall he knew this day not to cross this woman. When the spell ended and the dust settled Quincy was quick to begin moving what he could off to the side of the road, his eyes never allowing the Justiciar into his sight. Her words would still find purchase. The duo who knew each other, both had magic, had given very similar answers.
“Must you live for another to live well? To ignore the betterment of the self does that not eventually fail those you live for? Should you not be ever evolving if you are to appropriately see to the ever changing needs of those you serve? If you cannot say that you live well as an individual can you say you live well for others?” His questions were fired off back to back not allowing them to reply before beginning the next as the goal wasn’t for them to listen for them to reply. The questions were given in hopes that they would think on their replies before answering. Especially Sylvari, who’s oath felt rehearsed and embedded in her deeper than any ore vein could find itself.
The question was a knife that he knew would cut both ways. Did he live well? He knew the answer and he stopped to look at them both. “No. I spend my nights in mourning and drink myself into a stupor. My days are filled with the repercussions of the night before to try and drown out the grief that weighs my heart down like an anchor around the neck of the child I once was. I even sold my spear to keep myself on this journey. No, I do not live well.” Is what he wished he had the strength to say but instead he could only look at them both with a warm smile and eyes holding back a deluge of tears. Shrugging he began to walk off, his portion of the work completed. “The next time we three meet I will have an answer…or at least I hope to.” His voice cracked a bit before finally finding its natural tone. In part he hoped they’d meet his rather improbable condition.

“I was holding back,” he replied, winking at her with a small smirk. The reaction was more amusing than annoying - Though, he hated showing his magic usually. “A lot like you are right now.” He added, watching the rock get destroyed. Once the show was over, he just walked over and started grabbing the now smaller, and definitely more manageable, bits of the boulder. He grabbed it piece by piece and started throwing them off to the side. He didn’t seem bothered by Quincy not helping - He seemed to be dealing with different issues of his own right now.
His answer was definitely interesting. Though Vinny was pretty comfortable with his current situation, he couldn’t help but consider - Before ultimately shrugging. “Living for others is not the only way to live well - But the key there is to live for the betterment of yourself, and the betterment of your community and those around you will eventually come around..” He grunted as he tossed another, slightly larger, rock. “It’s a circle. A… A cycle, I suppose. If you live for others, you want to better yourself for them. If you live for yourself, you’re eventually going to want to help your community, and better your surroundings. Is that making sense?” He seemed a bit unsure of himself there. He was sure Sylvari would get it though.
“Hey, that couldn’t be the only boulder, right? Do you guys think there’ll be more falling?” He questions, looking up and around for a possible source of the boulders.

A pervasive frown tugged at Sylvari's lips upon hearing Quincy's nihilistic viewpoint. She worked in silence, rolling boulder fragments off the road as she contemplated her response. She had been at this long enough to understand a cry for help when she heard one. Sylvari also listened to Vinny's explanation, sending a small smile his way to show her support. Though she thought his answer was a good one, she wasn't sure it was what Quincy needed to hear right now.
Finally having slid a larger rock shard off the road, with a little help from an icy path she created underneath [Ice Bridge], Sylvari sat upon it and turned her face to look at Quincy as she spoke, her words soft and gentle as if she was speaking to a child. "My dear, I think you've mistaken my path for a prescription I propose for everyone. Oaths have no meaning if such is expected of everyone: they are either extraordinary by definition or meaningless. I do genuinely believe that we can only truly live well if we dedicate ourselves to the benefit of others, but please do not mistake that to mean running yourself ragged to dwindling effectiveness. Even I understand the need for training and self-care. It's all in how you frame your activity within your mind. When I train, I am strengthening my body to better defend those within my care. When I take time for myself, I am refreshing my mind to safeguard against impatience or anger against those who would make request of me. I am called to be many things to many people, to meet them where they are so I may serve best."
Sylvari moved from her perch to rest a gentle hand on Quincy's arm. "Unless I am wrong, what you need is a sympathetic ear and for someone to tell you it's ok to be searching for your purpose. I understand the blessing I had to find what drives me so young. Find your reason for living, and share that in community." She smiled, gentle and serene, so genuine that even those who knew of her nature would think her the furthest thing in the world from the monster within.
