After the awakening of Vulcadreas, the volcano’s explosion sent giant boulders flying all across a localized area in a few regions. Being a noble adventurer from Dragon’s Cradle, Count Thadda asked Astrid and some others to step in and help with clean up. The kid doesn’t think anything is beneath her, and that makes things easy when tasks that some other seasoned adventurers might find to be beneath them. Astrid is happy to help the locals, enthusiastic even, especially with the opportunity to collect some possibly still-hot volcanic material that she could potentially take home and use for some projects of her own. So, dressed in some of her workshop clothes, thick and protective from the heat of the forge and perfect for protection from the heat of the rocks, Astrid arrives in an outlier village to assist with cleanup. To her surprise, she sees a familiar face – one she wasn’t sure she’d ever see again: that samurai guy who decided that getting eaten by a lava dragon was the best way to do some damage. “Hey!!” she calls, waving her hand then tromping over to Arashi. “I saw ya made it through the battle, but I didn’t think I’d get ta see ya again? How are ya??”
Quest details: Quest Name: That's a nice boulder Participants: Two or more Location: Ashlands, Dragon's Cradle or Zeinav Desert Post Requirements: 5 post per person, 200 words per post Reward: +1 Renown Description: The recent eruption at Mt. Drakolt has caused hundreds of massive, flaming rocks to soar across the eastern coast of Charon. The primary roads and countryside around the Ashlands, Dragon's Cradle and Zeinav have all been littered with the giant rocks. They block travel and trade routes, as well as disrupt the local wildlife population. Some have landed in local farms, destroying important crops for the winter, and some have even landed on unsuspecting homes or wagons. Adventurers are needed to help rid the east of these giant stones, some still extremely hot from their time inside the volcano. How you get rid of them is entirely up to you, you can move them to a better suited area, or break them up into tiny, more manageable pieces. It does not matter how you dispose of the boulders, as long as they are removed.

After slaying a deity came the cleaning duty, pieces of Mt Drakolt scattered about everywhere and a bunch of them had ended on a small village in the outskirts destroying houses and blocking roads. As he looked around trying to find where his help might be needed the most he noticed a young girl in some workshop clothes, she seemed familiar, and once she called over to him and began approaching he realized it was the girl who fought Vulcadreaus with them! She had given him an item with which she could cast spells from, it ended up not being needed and Arashi had noticed it disappearance after the fight ended, guessing the girl knew how to summon her items back to her.
"Oh hello!" Arashi waved at her as she approached, "Well I'd like to say it takes more than being eaten by a mountain-sized burrowing magma lizard that apparently explodes to get rid of me... but I did technically die..." he chuckled awkwardly "but hey I survived!" He shrugged with a grin not everyone gets to say that they've died and survived in the same sentence. "I'm glad you're ok too, I tried my best to try and end it there just so no one else had to fall... it didn't quite seem to work sadly..." he shook his head a little snapping himself out of it
"Anyways guess we should introduce ourselves, I'm Arashi pleased to meet you." He extends his hand for a handshake.

As casually as Arashi says that he “technically” died, Astrid’s head cocks in confusion. Clearly, he’s alive. Though, Astrid does recall catching a glimpse of him near Taki, and she knows Taki is an incredibly capable healer, so things start to make sense. Besides, there are plenty of magical ways to bring someone back to life. Astrid even has her own magic item to make that possible.
“Glad ta see yer alright,” Astrid says with a smile. “Seems like lots a’ folks made plans ta try an’ take ol’ Vulcy down, but they didn’t all pan out fer us. I wanted ta blast him with ice from inside, but stuff kinda went bonkers when he exploded. Can’t believe ya made it through it, but I’m glad ya did! Speakin’ of… do ya happen ta have me magic rod or did ya lose it in the explosion? Honestly, I forgot about it until just now.”
“Ah, right, nice ta meet ya officially!” Taking Arashi’s hand and shaking it with gusto, Astrid introduces herself. “I’m Astrid Stormstone– erm, sorry, Lady Astrid Stormstone. But just Astrid is fine!” She gives Arashi a bright-eyed, gap-toothed smile. “So, yer here ta do some cleanin’ up, yeah? We’ve got a big chunk a’ hot rock over there that we need ta break down!” She motions across the village to what is indeed, a giant steaming hot rock with veins of magma glowing under its surface.

After they shook hands and properly introduced, Arashi tried to answer her question "Well about that... I think it was still there after the explosion but once the fight was over I couldn't find it... I thought since I saw you use replicant you might also have known summon possession so I assumed you took it like that..." he shook his head "If you don't have it then I fear I lost it at some point during the commotion"
Unsure of how Astrid would react, and slightly concerned since she introduced herself as Lady, implying she is a noble, which means either she's really strong or has a lot of influence... probably both... besides she seemed like a good kid so he'd hate to upset her... but well it was the truth he had no idea where it went, maybe he shouldn't have assumed and should've gone to talk with her and ask her about it, but other things where on his mind back then... mainly an Unconscious friend falling from the sky... "I'm sorry I should've reached out to you as soon as I noticed it missing..."
he replied to the other question still a bit ashamed of himself "But yeah I am here to help with repairs and cleanup."

With Arashi admitting that he was a little too preoccupied with being deleted from existence to think about returning her Proxy to her, Astrid’s smile turns to a bit of a snarky, playful one. She holds one hand up and summons the rod into her hand in a little flash of purple magic.[1] “Aye, yer right about that! An' lucky too. I woulda been upset ta lose this.” she says gleefully. “I don’t know a lot a’ Space domain magic, just a couple a’ spells me gran helped me learn.” Then, she stows the Proxy in one of the many pockets in her coveralls. It clinks against other metal objects inside, presumably tools based on the wrench jutting out of one of them.
“Just wanted ta see how much yer brain got rattled in the explosion,” she admits, though keeps her playful tone. “I really am glad ta see yer alright. An’ I’m glad ta see ya here!”
Astrid motions over to an incredibly large boulder, at least the size of a house, that blocks the main road into and out of the remote village. “We’re workin’ on ways ta move this. I don’t s’pose ya know any earth magic or rock splittin’ skills, do ya? I’m thinkin’ about tryin’ ta turn chunks of it ta water bit by bit an’ just washin it away.”

As Astrid summoned back her Arcane Proxy, Arashi let out a bit of an annoyed sigh, "Don't worry I would've felt very bad as well had you lost it because of me..." Surprised at the mention of a grandparent, he felt curious so he had to ask. "Your gran is a wizard?" he wondered who they might be, might be someone relatively unknown, but it might be someone he knows, besides some small talk never hurt anyone. "I'm glad to see you're alright too, also glad to see that even after all that's happened children are still the same, pranks and all" he chuckled, the little prank had bothered him a little, but seeing a kid that not so long ago found herself in the frontlines against primordial being still being able to act the part of a child was... heartwarming to say the least. For him, it meant that no matter what the world faced, and what hellish things fate had in store, there was still joy to be had, there was still those who gave and received love. And as long as that was a thing, the future was something worth fighting for.
being brought back to reality by Astrid showing him a massive boulder "I... don't know any earth magic no... but I'm pretty sure I can at least cut it in half! then we might have to get a bit more creative... But the first bit shouldn't be hard!" He unsheathed his Katana anyone around would probably wonder what the hell he was gonna do with that, a steel sword, which also seemed unenchanted, no matter how sharp would not be able to cut through solid stone... And normally that'd be a correct assumption, even more considering this was a katana, they are good and sharp swords but they are also more brittle than say a greatsword.
Arashi Lifted his sword above his head readying himself to bring it down on the boulder, so as to make sure the whole of it would be hit he concentrated to augment the range of his blade temporarily[1] as he brought it down swiftly but gently, like a practiced motion rather than a full powered attack, a path of void was left on it's wake and once it hit the rock, there was basically no resistance, a clean slice in half[2], the rock opened up and a gash was left even on the ground following said slice. "Like a hot knife through butter" Arashi chuckled to himself, this was one of the first times he had gotten to use this ability which he had been practicing for a while.

Astrid ponders whether or not Kamille is a wizard then decides that she doesn’t fit the image of the scholars at the academy. “Mmm more like a witch, I’d say,” she says. “Known as the Witch a’ Moonglade. She was ridin’ a drake ‘round the battle with ol’ Vulcy.” As Astrid pats the pocket where her Arcane Proxy now sits safely, she smiles. “Pranks ain’t all that bad so long as they don’t hurt no one,” she says.
As she presents the boulder to Arashi, she sees the samurai studying it. When he suggests cutting it in half, at first she looks surprised, shocked even, but then her mouth stretches into a wide grin. “I’d love ta see that!” she says with genuine excitement. That kind of strength or skill would be incredibly impressive, and Astrid quite likes being impressed. Now, she does have her doubts seeing just a thin blade. But then again, she’s seen people split stones with a few well-placed wedges and a couple of proper hammer swings.
Stepping back to give him plenty of room, assuming a massive show of strength, Astrid watches Arashi. But he makes a clean and simple cut through the air. At first, nothing happens. Then the boulder cracks in half and falls apart in two pieces. Inside the hardened surface is still red hot rock, but not so hot that it’s liquified like lava. Steam bursts out as a wave of heat rushes across the area.
“WHOA!!!” Astrid exclaims, a rush of excitement flowing through her. “That was awesome!!”

Wait the witch of Moonglade was her Grandma?! He'd have to make a mental note of that. Either way after cutting the boulder in half as steam rushed out and the temperature of the area went up a little Arashi sheathed his sword just in time for Astrid's exclamation of excitement. Arashi couldn't help but chuckle "I'm glad you think so! it's a technique I've been developing for a while now, it's basically just channelling space magic trough a blade, it allows me to cut almost anything. Although that isn't the coolest part... Sadly I can't do it too often, even if it is not that tiring... you know how space magic can be, with it's caveats of time between castings"
Now that the giant boulder was split into two big boulders, and he wouldn't be able to try that again for a while, he wondered what could be done next to break it further. "I still have a few more tricks, but would you like to try your hand at it?" He asked Astrid wanting to see what the child could do. He didn't want to be the only one showing off, and considering how strong she was during the fight against Vulcadreaus, she must have a few tricks up her sleeve as well.

Astrid’s respect for blades in the past has not been exactly… high, mostly because she subconsciously thought that blades were inferior weapons by the fact that they need to be sharpened and honed versus hammers that can get beat to hell and still do their job. Seeing this special technique demonstrated by Arashi, however, might have just changed her mind. “Ya invented that technique? That’s incredible…” she breathes.
Looking over at the two halves of a once massive boulder, Astrid considers what to do with them. “Well, lightnin’ ain’t all that good fer rocks, an’ I ain’t got nothin’ special fer splittin’ ‘em like ya do. I did learn somethin’ from the Consortium that’ll let me turn stuff into other stuff, so I’ll try breakin’ down one of the boulders like that!” With a grin on her face, Astrid rubs her hands together and walks up to one half of the boulder which sits on the edge of a deep slope. She opens her wings[1] and flies around to the side overhanging the drop off and touches the boulder, focusing on the biggest area she can muster at once.[2] Slowly, the solid stone starts to liquify, the surface bubbling because of the hot stone below and then slaking off in droves as a mass of rock turned to water rains down and rushes down the mountainside below.
She flies back and examines her handiwork. It’s not nearly as fast as Arashi’s technique, but a good human sized chunk of rock has been turned to water and harmlessly washed away. Astrid wipes her brow. “That seems like the best way fer me, but I can only do it once more I think, so probably ain’t actually the best.” If only there were some spell that could shatter things at a touch…

As Astrid flew around and turned some of the boulder to water, Arashi felt intrigued, He had expected something along the lines of an impressive display of strength and power swinging a hammer down and blowing up the boulder into millions of little pieces... although she probably didn't want to use that sort of method so as to not damage the surroundings...
But as she turned part of the rock to water, Arashi was rightly impressed that sort of technique must require a lot of control and knowledge to pull off, besides it has a lot of possible applications, still as she herself said it might not be the most efficient way... So he nodded and gave a smile. "I did not expect you to be so gentle, but that seems like a very useful ability! hell you could turn someone's weapon into water as you did with that rock, or even turn an armor into oil! Although that might be too much..." he didn't want to continue that idea in case Astrid found it messed up, or worse tried it and painfully killed someone by setting them on fire... "Anyways, it seems like it wont be the most effective way..." he thought for a second as he observed the two pieces of boulder one slightly smaller than the other.
He began to fly[1] as he looked for a good angle and after finding an angle in which he was sure he wouldn't hit anything other than the rock with his next technique, he nodded again and floated up and to the left, looking down at both pieces of the rock one behind the other. "Ok good thing I found this now before it ran out." He closed his eyes and focused the still active energy of the art of the soul. gathering his spiritual energy as a few glowing specks of energy began spiralling towards his arms as he weaved them with a single circle in front of him the specks grew in number and size, and right before he extended his arms towards the rock his eyes gave out a similar glow[2]. then he extended his hands towards both pieces of rock as if striking with both palms, a beam of pure energy was sent forwards passing diagonally through the rocks, uninterrupted, it wasn't big enough to engulf them but it went right through leaving a sizable hole in both of them, and ending shortly after reaching the other side of the farthest rock.
As both parts of the original boulder were left with holes their weight proved too much for the shorter bits that held them together, and so with a strong snap they broke in roughly half again
"Ok now I'm almost out of tricks... that was the only one of those I had!" He chuckled a little he still had ideas on how to break the rock if further breakage was necessary but now that we had the rock split into 4 parts each missing about a quarter of their original mass... maybe it could be moved.

Arashi’s compliment about being gentle catches Astrid off guard. As much as she tends to do like her namesake and storm into situations and bring forth a certain amount of destruction, to be called gentle feels odd. Off, even. She smiles brightly nonetheless. “I ain’t thought about turnin’ someone’s weapon or armor into water or nothin’ like that! Ain’t even occurred ta me.” In the heat of battle, she tends to just smash things and move along. That idea though, that’s a good one, especially if someone is particularly challenging. “I think I’ll try that.”
Turning to look at the rocks, Astrid puts her hands on her hips. “Aye, thought I might be able ta do a bit more than I did, but don’t look like it’ll be effective after all.” She stands back and watches Arashi use some sort of special technique to rend the giant boulder halves in two once more. She lets out an unpracticed but impressed whistle. “Wow… That was real neat!” she says excitedly.
Now with each of the four chunks of rock the size of a house’s living room (which is still large and much too heavy to move by normal, physical means), Astrid taps her chin and considers what they could do, especially with the rocks as red hot as they are inside. Any good dwarf with quarry and mining experience could split these rocks with a few well-placed chisels and hammer strikes. But getting too close to these rocks could probably still burn the skin.
So, Astrid starts to consider what she’s learned from her time working in the shop and something comes to mind: thermal shock. Rapidly changing temperatures on an object can cause it to fracture or even explode depending on the material. Glass is especially subject to this, so igneous rock might just be the same! “Oh! I think I’ve got an idea, but it’ll take a lot a’ magic an’ might explode the rocks, so go clear folks outta the area!”
Then, Astrid manifests her war hammer in her hand[1] and points it at the rock chunks like a magic wand. Swirling blue light and cold wind focus into the end of her hammer. With her free hand, she makes motions that will duplicate the spell[2]. Then, after a moment of charging and focus, two bright blue-white streaks of light fire out of the end of her hammer and strike the red-hot rocks. Powerful ice magic blasts the rocks,[3] changing their temperatures rapidly, seeping deeper and deeper into the material for as long as Astrid can keep the spell going until the boulders are covered in a layer of frost.
When she’s worn out, Astrid stops the spell and lets out an exhausted breath. There’s cracking from the boulders, snapping from the different chunks rapidly shrinking due to thermodynamic mumbo jumbo. Then… two of the four boulders crumble into smaller and much easier-to-clean-up bits.

Arashi nodded as Astrid admitted to not having thought of that, it was understandable even if powerful and way more experienced in combat than most anyone her age, Astrid probably didn't have in depth combat training so winging it and relying on instinct and power rather than strategies, was likely easier for her. Still he was glad that their interaction might help her, she has a lot of potential, so any help he might give to help her make the most of it is a win in his book.
As Astrid warned that her next move might bring danger to those close to the rocks, Arashi began telling the people to clear the area, he gathered them and made them stand several steps behind him he himself standing a bit behind Astrid. In an impressive display of magic power she managed to freeze two of the rocks over which began to crack, at this point Arashi approached standing next to Astrid, holding his hand out signaling the others to not approach yet. At this point the two rocks seemed like they would explode into millions of shards, but Arashi was ready to protect the people, still it seemed it wouldn't be necessary as the boulders just crumbled almost in place turning to pebbles rather than explode into rock bullets.
"That was quite the display! You managed to basically get rid of two of the rocks, and even kept everyone safe by making them crumble instead of explode." He approached what was left and looked at the remaining rocks, still too big to carry. "I'm kind of running out of tricks... I think I can break them down further but it will take some time... I guess I should still try it's better than doing nothing." with a sweeping motion he creates a blade made of lightning and wind[1] it is capable of passing through stuff burning, melting, and cutting through most any material at least if given enough time so he stabbed it into the rock and began to slowly move it around making sure it was actually breaking it down, it would take a while to cut pieces out like this but at least it's working.
"Sorry... I can't help that much more..." With that he carved the first piece out while he could cut it in halves until it was managable he figured it might be faster to cut it into already managable sizes of rock, this one should be about 50 pounds. Should be carryable, after it dropped he got back to carving more pieces.

Breathing heavily from the intense use of her magic, Astrid still manages to give Arashi a thumbs up and a smile. “Thanks,” she says breathlessly. “Wish I coulda done more, but that spell takes a lot out a’ me.” Leaning on her hammer, she watches as Arashi sizes up the last two pieces then manifests a blade that looks as if it’s made entirely of sky domain magic. Her eyes go wide, having never seen anything like it and struggling to imagine the amount of control that kind of spell might require. She considers herself pretty proficient with sky magic, but Astrid does a lot of flashy tricks that are more focused on power than technique usually. Arashi must be pretty incredible too. If she’s the storm, then he is the elements that individually make up its creation – the perfect combination of circumstances to bring lightning to life.
Watching him carve through the giant boulders and reduce them to manageable chunks one by one is nothing short of impressive, and Astrid doesn’t take her eyes off of Arashi for a moment. After a while, she’s recovered her energy, and all four boulders are reduced to something that they can manage.
“That was incredible!” Astrid says as she approaches Arashi. “I ain’t ever seen a technique like that, but now I know what kind a’ special stuff can be done with the right kind a’ control. Thanks fer showin’ me! Even if that weren’t yer intention necessarily.” She laughs a little and offers Arashi a grateful handshake. “Now we can get this mess cleaned up with all the hands we got around here. Let’s get ta it!”
Then she starts hoisting up rocks to help with the cleanup efforts. It’s no small amount of work, even with all the villagers helping to clear the road, but after a few hours, they’re able to move wagons through the area again, which helps the cleanup effort and get folks who were trapped on the far side into town. It’s a grueling but rewarding task, and at the end of the day, Astrid collapses on a bench.
“This woulda been way harder without yer help, Arashi,” she says to the samurai, wiping her brow. “Thanks a lot.”

As he's carving the rocks Arashi notices Astrid paying close attention, he didn't see this as that impressive but he's always been more focused on control and technique than raw power, although during his fight with Vulcadreaus he noticed his lack in that last area, he's working on it though trying to develop a spell that might be strong enough... Once he carves the last big piece into two manageable ones, he opens his hand and the phase blade disappears.
Astrid approaches calling Arashi's technique incredible, and thanking him for showing her what control can achieve. "You're right that it wasn't my intention, but I'm glad I could regardless!" he shakes her hand cheerfully, and once she said the bit about finishing up the cleanup he nodded "Indeed we should get to it!"
Some of the villager's brought a cart to load the bigger chunks into and take them out of the village that way, Arashi, Astrid, and some of the villagers began to put the rocks on the cart, while other villagers swept the pebbles that Astrid made by cooling part of the boulder until it crumbled. In not too much longer all the chunks were in the cart and the pebbles in sacks to be carried away later.
After that Arashi wipes his brow and stretches his back, slightly tired and a bit achy from the cleanup effort. still it was indeed rewarding to see all the relieved and happy villagers now that they had a piece of their town back. "You also helped a lot! not only did you manage to basically entirely break about half of the boulder, but you're pretty strong! as well as energetic... it definitely would've been harder to put those chunks in the wagon without your help. so thank you too" He looked at the distance, thinking of making his way home, maybe some other adventures would happen on the way but for now, he really wanted to lie down somewhere, he probably wouldn't make it to his bed until a few days later but he wanted to be on his way there.
"hopefully next time we meet is for a more... action packed quest. Not that this wasn't good, but... it could be fun to fight together! Goodbye Astrid" Arashi said and waved at the girl sitting in a bench.
