Leandros rested his hands on the pommel of his saddle, sitting atop his mount as usual. The knight overlooked the Arid Mesa ahead of them. This place seemed to be turning into a haven and refuge for monsters of all sorts. The Winged Expeditionary Force was so focused on the King Troll, these dragons were seemingly being ignored. Dragons are a common enough threat that maybe they feel it can wait. City leaders and civilians seem to think otherwise and want them taken care of as soon as possible. Well, the knight can oblige that. Ever since he took down the dragon he now wore as a cape, he had the reputation of a dragon slayer. Though, the stories he's heard in mead halls kindly forget the beating he took on that day. Truth be told, there are days when he can still feel the tingle in his finger tips from the lightning. He smiled and patted Byrr's shoulder as the horse let out a little huff, "Don't worry Byrr, we won't be careless this time around." It's about this time the knight turns his head to see the other adventurer joining him. Leandros grins wide and bright as she approaches. It was good to see Astrid again and she seemed to be in good health at the very least. He had hoped she'd be in better spirits as well. They have only met once since Vikram's death and while he no longer thought about it much, it was hard not to seeing her again. "I hope you're well this day Lady Stormstone."
Quest Name: Burrow These Participants: Two or more Location: Arid Mesa Post Requirements: 8 post per person, 250 words per post Reward: +1 Mystical Archive Ticket, +1 Earth Dragon Scale Description: Something dangerous is truly stirring in the east, with Mount Drakolt getting more active with each passing day. However the west is experiencing its own issues, specifically in the Arid Mesa. With the recent rumors of the Sol Stone being destroyed and temples to the gods discovered in the sands, many groups have flocked to the desolate waste land to set up research camps and excavations. However a deep power beneath the sands has been disturbed, ancient earthen burrowing dragons have been woken up. These massive dragons with both the ability to fly and burrow beneath the earth are attacking these researchers, destroying their camps and killing everyone there. If we are to understand what is happening in the east, we need to protect these scientist and researchers at all cost! Special Requirements: At least one member of the group (PC only, no NPC's) must be knocked unconscious during this fight.)

After having spent so long preparing for a good old troll hunt with other members of the WEF, it’s nice to turn attention back to other kinds of monster hunting – in this case, some sleepy earth dragons that have been resting beneath the sands for who knows how long. There isn’t a lot of information about them except that they’re very big, can burrow, and can fly. Astrid wonders if they’re so old that they don’t have the same wherewithal that younger, less ancient dragons have. Either way, there are researchers in danger per usual, and being something of a dragon slayer herself, the young Lady stepped up to help.
To her surprise and pleasure, someone else she knows came forward to assist! None other than her dragon-slaying knight friend Leandros. Seeing him perched upon his horse as she flies down on the back of her own equine mount, Arcus the pegasus, Astrid waves to him. A lot of time has passed since she last spoke to Leandros, and this time she’s in much better spirits, having dealt with much of the grief of Vikram’s death in one way or another. Sometimes all someone needs is time and support.
“Hiya, Leandros!” she says in a chipper tune. “Just Astrid’s alright.” Somehow an increasing phrase out of her mouth. Her friends don’t need to be so formal. “Good ta see ya again. Heard yer part a’ the Fighter’s Guild now. How’re they treatin’ ya?”
Clanking just behind her, strapped to the saddle but covered in some haphazard protective burlap, is an odd lump. Who knows what she’ll be doing with that if anything at all.

"A pegasus, a fitting mount for you." He smiles brightly. "Well, though I admit I have little time to spend at the Guild proper. It is good to see them doing some help around Charon, but everyone's attentions are pulled so thin given everything."
It was hard to ignore whatever was stirring in Mount Drakolt. Leandros hated that there was little more they could do beyond wait to see what was happening. He at least held to the hope that the greater minds of the land were trying to figure it out and prevent a disaster. The tension of everyone was hard to bear some days for a man who tries to put it all on his shoulders.
Save those thoughts for later, there is something to pull his focus to the present. Just ahead the earth starts to rumble and churn, the beasts haven't breached the surface yet, but they are close.
"Have you faced a dragon before?...Not that I am worried about your skill, just idle talk between warriors as we wait."
Another small laugh from the knight as he gently snaps Byrr's reins to move him forward. It's a slow walk towards the spot, not enough to draw attention their way, but getting closer nonetheless. Despite his relaxed posture, one hand holds the reins and the other rests on the shaft of his halberd ready to be drawn in an instant. For now though, some conversation with a friend while they wait for the actual action.

Astrid looks at the mount beneath her with a proud smile and pats Arcus’ neck affectionately. “Glad ya think so! Me da found him fer me!” Somehow, Cantio’s friendship with an apparent unicorn resulted in the glorious, gray, speckled flying horse that carries her.
Her expression shifts to one of more understanding, and she gives a small nod in agreement. “Aye, there’s a lot happenin’ all around Charon. Seems like the dragons are just another thin’, ya know?” As if on cue, the ground rumbles beneath them. That’s right, no time to stop and smell the roses. “Aye, I’ve faced a dragon before!” she says loudly, as if she’s offended he doesn’t remember. “We bonded over it! I fought a white dragon in Frost Gale, and ya fought a blue dragon! That’s how me hammer got all icy, took his breath dead on.”
She nudges Arcus forward alongside Leandros and Byrr.
“Though, I get the feelin’ these big ancient fellas are gonna be a lot tougher than the ones we faced before. I’m expectin’ ‘em ta make those look like wee babies. S’pose it ain’t the best place ta test somethin’, but trial by… erm… well, trial by dirt’s about the best thin’ ya can do fer a drill!” Astrid lets out a little laugh and pats the lump under the fabric strapped to the saddle behind her. With each pat, there’s a metallic thudding, though it isn't hollow.

"Right, right, I apologize." He offered a soft smile and laugh, "The troubles plaguing Sol City keep me busy...so busy I apparently forget my friends and their stories."
Leandros is all too glad to hear more about the fight again though. It is encouraging to see someone as young as Astrid brimming with as much confidence as she does. He doesn't entirely know her past, but the future ahead for her is bright if what he does know is anything to go off of. He nods at her assment though as they continue on.
"Ayarteshki was no small dragon, but he was also ancient and alone....this pair....let us hope they are bitter rivals and not a mated pair. It will be all the more difficult if they are coordinated.
Almost as if on cue there is a ripple through the ground, a tremble of the earth. It is not enough to come close to unseating either of them if that were even possible, but it is a warning. These dragons were at least kind enough to give them a heads up that they were unwelcome guests. Unfortunately for the dragons the meeting wasn't exactly something that could be avoided.
"Well....that's a sign I suppose. We should spread out a bit at least make them both reveal themselves if they are going to come out at all. Do not be afraid to call out if you are in need of healing, I will do what I can to assist you. Though I imagine a dragon a piece will keep us both busy."
The knight offers her another smile, dutifully waiting for her input before he would head off to the west to get some distance. The further they travel into the supposed territory of the dragons, the more the rumbles increase and the more intense the warning.

The ground rumbling beneath Arcus’ hooves startles the pegasus, and he threatens to take off, but Astrid pulls back on the reins and keeps him from charging forward, giving him a comforting pat on the neck. “Seems like it. At least they ain’t burst up ready ta eat us yet,” she says with a small smile. “Couple a’ dragons’ll be a right pain, they will.”
As the two of them spread out and continue forward cautiously, the rumbles continue. Astrid keeps an alert eye out for any dirt moving in the vicinity. If she needs to avoid danger, she sure will let Arcus take off into the air. They trot in relative quiet, keeping their eyes and ears peeled as they approach a canyon that dips below the plateau. It’s dotted with sparse shrubbery, dried and long dead trees, and the occasional butte marking where an old mesa might have been. The rumbling grows more aggressive, so much so that small stones rattle against the dry ground.
In front of Astrid, the ground splits asunder, and a massive brown dragon explodes from below, sending rocks and dirt in all directions. With long claws like those of a mole and wings that drag along the ground like a cape, the dragon lets out a mighty, challenging roar to those who enter its territory. Arcus panics and attempts to flee, and Astrid lets him take off into the air, though she pulls him back toward the dragon. At that point, she notices its eyes are closed in the bright midday sun, its heavy brow furrowed and a frown on its face pulled even deeper by long whiskers. It seems to have not even noticed her or Leandros, and it looks forward intently at the other wall of the canyon before it bellows.
“Shaelethag, show yourself! I know you’re out there, creaky bitch!” Each word rattles the canyon around them like rolling thunder.
Having been summoned, the opposite wall of the canyon rumbles, and debris rains down, clattering against the canyon floor. Claws matching the length and style of this other dragon break open the rockface with explosive force then pull it away. Slowly, another dragon of equivalent size and stature shambles out of the wall and roars at the first dragon in return. This time the voice is feminine. “You whiskered rat bastard, what do you want? I was taking a nap!” The female dragon emerges into the sun, twisting horns and a long mane running down her neck. Each movement of her massive limbs is slow as she steps forward to glower at the first dragon.
“Likely excuse,” the first dragon snarls. “I can feel you moving through my territory! Stay on your side of the canyon lest I make a meal of your younglings!” His claws clench, creating trenches in the dry bed below.
“Your territory?” Shaelethag sounds offended and looks the first dragon up and down, then her lips curl up in a snarl. “By all accounts, you are the one trespassing on my lands! Step back, you brute.”
A gasp escapes the first dragon, and he huffs and stammers for a moment, his eyes opening wide to look around at the area. Then he aggressively points at a butte down the canyon. “That butte marks the line! I haven’t crossed it!”
“You daft old codger, we didn’t settle on a butte, we settled on a mesa! Remember your place!”
“When did you last wake, Shael? That mesa is now a butte!”
The two dragons continue bickering about semantics and erosion and how long they’ve actually been asleep. Meanwhile, Astrid looks at Leandros with a puzzled expression. Maybe they won’t have to fight after all? She decides to give them a chance, so she flies over to the first dragon on Arcus’ back despite the steed’s protests.
“Um, ‘scuse me!” she says as loudly as she can. The male dragon pauses and shakes his head before scratching at his ear as if swatting at a bug. “Ack! Don’t be rude!”
With a low, rumbling growl, the dragon pauses his bickering and looks around slowly until he spots Leandros and Astrid. “Oh great,” he complains. “Your intrusion into my territory attracted the adventurers.”
“You’re the one who called on me!” Shaelethag snarks. "Besides, I never crossed the line!"
“Oi, ‘scuse me! Maybe we can settle this, huh??” Astrid asks. “Miss Shaelethag and um… what’s yer name, mister?”
The male dragon grumbles something under his breath, which may or may not be his name or some draconic curses. “...But everyone just calls me Clark.”
Astrid certainly isn’t expecting that name, but she smiles nonetheless. “Well, Mister Clark and Miss Shael, maybe we can help ya settle this?”
Both old dragons look between the two adventurers with suspicion wrinkling their old faces, but neither of them seems to want to actually do any of the fighting.
“Fine, what do you propose?”

Leandros did not know much draconic, it was not the most taught of the languages in Sol City, and if it was he did not have the mind for many languages that his wife did. Though the little he had gleaned in his time made this a very confusing situation.
Admittedly, his guard was up as he heard the aggressive tones and posturing. His hand went instinctively to his halberd, but the grip relaxed when he saw they were not immediately attacking and instead kept bickering among themselves.
He lets out a long breath when Astrid finally interrupts them and they are slowly keyed in on the dispute. Great. A land dispute. Oddly enough this is something he was familiar with when it came to nobility, but not so much when it came to draconic entities.
"Welcome to being a noble Astrid." Leandros offers a small laugh with the aside before climbing down off Byrr to approach a bit closer.
"So you both believe he crossed into your lands, but you say you didn't?"
"YES" They both bellow in unison before awkwardly looking between each other.
"All right," His hands are put up defensively. "Well, when is the last time either of viewed the surface? Charon has faced a few cataclysms in recent history, it is possible that your previous line of demarcation has been erased."
Both dragons seem to hem and haw, nervous to admit just how long they had been asleep. It would be foolish to admit they had slept too long and just forgot.
"M-.....maybe like 2....3 centuries...maybe two and a half." Shael refuses to make eye contact with Clark after this admission.

“Two or three centuries??” Astrid says with a gasp. Holy smokes, that’s a long time. She knows that elves can live for many centuries, and she assumes as much for dragons, but sleeping that long can’t possibly be good for someone. Maybe to a dragon, a few centuries is nothing more than a few simple hours.
“I’m with Lee on this one,” she continues. “Lotsa stuff has happened, ‘specially lately. What if that rock there ain’t even the same one??”
Shael and Clark look at the butte then at each other before turning their snouts up and away in a huff. The adventurers may be right, but neither of them want to admit it.
“Fine,” Clark grumbles. “Maybe it wasn’t Shael, but if it isn’t, then who on Ginma’s Fuzzy Horse Ass Earth has been rummaging through my territory?”
It’s about that time that Astrid spots a small flying creature darkening the sky in the distance. It seems…vaguely dragon like, and after all the roaring between the two old dragons, it seems to be coming this way. “Maybe it’s that one?” she asks, pointing toward it. The older dragons turn their heads and squint at the approaching draconic figure.
“Ginma’s ass, that better not be that child, Arzenax,” Shael hisses through her teeth, her neck curling up in disdain.
“GREAT,” Clark grumbles.
Surely enough, a younger dragon lands between the two elders and lets out a mighty roar in some attempt to be intimidating. “I see you old folks are awake just in time for me to rip you from your territories!! Leave now while you still have your dignity or face the consequences of rebellion!”
The two older dragons look between each other, unimpressed and exhausted and then look at the adventurers. "Do something," they demand in unison.

Leandros didn’t know if he should feel better or worse now that a third dragon had shown up. On the one hand this meant they had a threat to directly address, but it also meant time to fight a dragon. This would certainly be a lot easier than settling a land dispute.
Centuries of age helps dragons think they know a lot, but so far it seems like it just makes them more stubborn. The land dispute would still probably take hours to sort out when this was all done, but maybe they would be more amenable to the small folk after they kill a dragon.
The knight lets out a small sigh as he draws his halberd while Shael and Clark shuffle off to the side. “I am somewhat stuck to the ground here Astrid, so I’ll do what I can to harry it from below. I am sure you have more than a few ways to drop it out of the sky.”
He shoots a small smile to Astrid before snapping the reins on Byrr to take off towards the descending dragon at a gallop.
“Going head on huh? Must not be one of the magic ones?”
“Do you see the armor? Ah course he isn’t you blind old coot.” The dragons grumble amongst each other while they watch the two take off. Well, at least this meant they would be getting some entertainment. Not a bad way to start their first day after waking up after a few centuries.

“The tiny one has armor too,” Clark says indignantly as he shuffles away to find a good place to perch. “Don’t know what a hatchling is going to do about a full grown dragon. Maybe the knight will carry her through it.”
“I don’t need no carryin’!” Astrid declares. “Lee, on the other hand, might!” The girl lets out a giggle and manifests her war hammer in one hand whilst digging in her bag for a potion with the other. “Lee, if ya want wings, I got ‘em fer ya here.” She offers him one of Beist’s Transmutation Potions should he want it. “I don’t think we gotta kill this one, do we?” she says, looking at the older dragons with a furrowed brow.
Shael raises her lips in a sneer. “He’s a pest, not of my brood. Fill your coffers with pay from his scales and make a trophy of his head if you wish. If you’re going to die, at least weaken him so that we may deal with him without issue.”
Astrid looks a bit surprised at that, but after taking a moment to consider it, she decides that dragons aren’t the same as people necessarily, and the new one that’s showed up does seem like a huge jerk. She shrugs a little. No harm giving this Arzenax a chance. Climbing up into Arcus’ saddle, she rides up to the young dragon.
“Oi, if ya don’t leave the old folks’ home, we’re gonna kick yer butt!” she says.
What is this speck in his face? Arzenax wrinkles his nose and looks down his snout at the adventurers before him. A child on a flying horse and a well-armored warrior. It must be a knight and his squire here to make an attempt on his life! Pulling his lips back into a full, teeth-bearing growl, Arzenax says, “Knight, can you not speak for yourself? To allow a child to do the talking for you is disgraceful. Face me with your full might so that I may revel in your death!”

"Someone learns how to fly and suddenly they think they are the better fighter." Leandros laughs a bit as they take off. "We can try and just push it back out of the territory, but I am not going to feel bad if we end up felling the beast."
Leandros, for his part, is not entirely surprised by the reaction from the dragons. In his studies they weren't exactly known to be caring creatures that doted over the small folk. Or at least finding such a dragon was a rarity. The cold indifference was the default setting it seemed, but teetering them over into angry and destructive wasn't hard.
"I wouldn't lose focus lest you lose a few of your teeth." The knight calls to the dragon above, fully expecting Astrid to have some choice reactions for the dragon so callously disregarding her.
As he snaps Byrr's reins to spur the horse forward, his ethereal armor shimmers over his body once again.[1] He keeps the charge going as the dragon takes a deep inhale, sparks glinting in its throat, before it bellows and spreads a gout of flame across the field. Fire covers the field for a moment, but Leandros comes out the other side with his cloak held in front shielding him and Byrr from the blaze.[2]
Leandros uses the moment as he passes to reach out and slash at its leg with his halberd. The weight and holy energy in the blade sear a wound into the dragon's flesh. It isn't deep or grevious, but a warning none the less that this lion had claws.

A mighty, “HA!” escapes Arzenax’s throat as he throws his head up into the air, bellowing a hearty laugh at this knight’s empty threats. Then the reins of the horse snap, and the dragon looks down to see Leandros charging at him with his halberd poised. As if that will do anything! So he lets out a gout of flames across the canyon at Leandros, but he’s surprised to see the knight completely unharmed rushing forward to slash his leg. The dragon bares his teeth and growls, leaping back with anger on his face.
“You use the skin of my kin against me?!” Arzenax demands, smoke drifting out of his seething teeth. “Fine, knight, you have chosen your fate!” As he reels back to release another flame breath, a shrill voice calls out from the side.
“OI! Don’t forget about me!” Astrid shouts as she launches her hammer through the air at Arzenax and smashes the dragon in the face. One of the dragon’s teeth does indeed come loose, and it flies through the air and sticks in the cliffside. He roars in anger and looks at her, but Astrid just looks smug. She’s used to being underestimated or taken for a squire, especially when traveling with Blue Raspberry, but she’s not going to take it from a dragon of all people.
Glancing between Leandros and Astrid, Arzenax growls and snorts. He can’t let a pair of upstair two-leggers show him up!

"INSOLENT LITTLE FLIES!" The dragon calls out as he is cracked in the jaw. Arzenax whips his tail forward to try and swat Astrid out of the sky. As long as he remained airborne, she would be his main threat. He could crush the knight below once she is taken care of.
The dragon sheathes his body in the heat of the desert[1] turning the air around him into the sweltering heat of the desert. Tooth and claw the size of buildings keep after the half-dwarf as it looks to eliminate her as quickly as possible, his arrogance not willing to let himself take the girl seriously for the moment.
Leandros pulls the reins to start circling back to make another charge against the dragon. He was limited by his inability to fly, though he did have the potion. It would be his third option as he did still have one final ploy to try and pull the dragon down to the earth. Well, not so much pull as blast it out of the sky.
Holding his halberd aloft again, the knight barrelled forward without fear. Rather than striking, a light gathered at the tip before a beam of holy energy blast forth.[2] The burst of energy burned a hole in the dragon's webbing sending out another roar.
Arzenax's form lilts to the right pulling his swing wide as he reels in pain. One hole doesn't bring the dragon down, but it's mobility in the air is hampered with one of its wings damaged. He decides he will land and face these adventurers.
"Fine, if you wish to be so foolish as to demand my attention you shall have it AND YOU SHALL BURN!"

Seeing Arzenax’s tail coming right for her and Arcus, Astrid tries to get her mount to fly out of the way, but as often as she rides the pegasus, she is not trained in the ways of proper battle riding. The mount panics, struggling to get itself moving midair before the tail swipes. Rather than let her mount be harmed, Astrid pulls Arcus from reality into her pocket dimension just as the tail whips through the air and slams into her. Like a ball struck by a bat, she flies through the air and slams into the side of the canyon.
While Arzenax basks in his victory, his wing gets caught by Leandros’ holy beam of “fuck you” energy, and his ability to stay aloft falters. If that’s the way it’ll be then, he will face them on their level but on his own terms.
As he bellows at Leandros, reeling back to prepare another breath of flame, Astrid manages to pull herself from the crater in the cliffside, dazed and groaning. That hit did not feel good at all. She can feel the dents in her armor pressing into her skin. Fixing that isn’t going to be fun whatsoever. She should really make a helmet, shouldn’t she?
Shaking herself out, Astrid jumps from the crater and opens her wings before she recalls her hammer into her hand and flies in to rejoin the battle. “Oi!” she calls again. “I said don’t forget about me! I think ya should cool off!” Aiming her hammer at Arzenax, a bright streak of blue light fires out from the end of it, and a swirling beam of icy energy strikes the dragon in the side. A blast of frost creeps across his scales and wing. Maybe that’ll give Lee another opening!

The weight of the dragon hitting the ground shakes the earth, but thankfully Byrr's training keeps the horse steady and level.[1] Leandros lands another glancing blow to its rear leg as he passes by, the heat burning into his armor forcing the knight to get some distance.
Arzenax raises a claw to crush the knight beneath him. The speed is devestating despite the behemoth before them. Knight and steed are just barely able to get past the end of the claws, but the rush of air and stone send them off-balance and tumbling.
Leandros rolls to his feet as Byrr works to gather himself up, "Go Byrr, get clear." Reluctantly, the hard-headed horse retreats to safety at the knight's order.
"Good, I like my snacks to be soaked with a bit of fear." Arzenax's voice drips with the hunger of a predator with prey in sight.
Before the dragon can take off after Byrr in a sadistic show of power he is hit by the blast of frost. It does give Leandros the opening to charge in and land a much more devastating blow, putting his hips into the slash he cuts into the softer underbelly of the dragon.[2] Blood falls from the wound as Arzenax pauses to look at it, almost amazed for a moment.
"YOU WOULD DO WELL TO REMEMBER LIZARD THAT YOU ARE FACING A LION, YOU WILL RESPECT THE KING OF THE BEASTS." Always defiant towards monsters, Leandros issues his challenge[3] and the dragon seems more than willing to oblige.
