Shitakibo took care of the fleeing mephits, leaving Morrigan to deal with the last of the survivors. One of the mephits let out a squeal, summoning shards of ice that Morrigan hurriedly blocked, raising their umbrella to stave off the frozen projectiles with a twirl and a flourish. From behind their shield, they blindly fumbled through their bag, searching for something they could use to get these creatures off their back.
They grabbed a potion at random, squinting at the contents of the bottle for a moment. Was this a healing elixir or a poison? Eh, didn’t matter. They lobbed the potion over the side of their umbrella, striking the Mephit over the head and breaking the glass.[1]
The Mephit hissed as flesh bubbled and cracked, the parasite poison making its way into the creature’s system. All at once, the barrage of ice lessened - an opportunity! Morrigan closed the umbrella with a SNAP and pulled the blade from the handle once more, stabbing it right into the mephit’s back.
One was left.
Morrigan brought their finger to their lips in a sharp whistle, one whose shrillness pierced through the air. A few seconds later, the beat of wings grew steadily closer, until A bright red dragon burst through the treeline that Morrigan and Shitakibo had come from.
“Bubbles! Snack time!” They shouted, gesturing towards the remaining Mephit. Bubbles’s eyes lit up with glee, diving for the last creature. The poor mephit didn’t stand a chance. A burst of fire later, Bubbles was quite content with his crispy meal. 1. Parasite Poison

Taki looked around the clearing, then up to Yukina who was circling overhead slowly. The wild storm broke apart, leaving behind a bright, slightly cloudy sky that warmed the clearing. Smiling, she signaled Yukina to rest up for the trip home as she walked over to Morrigan. Dismissing the Flame Sprites with a gentle word in Druidic, the shaman relaxed and caught her breath.
"That was an interesting encounter, it's a shame they can't be reasoned with in many cases." She said to the fellblood, her senses reaching outward to ensure there wasn't any stray pests waiting for an opportunity. Satisfied they were in the clear, she dusted herself off and offered the fallen Mephits Last Rights in Druidic.
"I suppose we can call this one complete. It was a pleasure working with you again Morrigan. Shall we collect our respective entourages and head back?" She said to her purple friend, glad they could share a more straight forward and less trying adventure. It was also pleasant to see their spirit growing, changing after the trials of the mountain. Trekking back through the snow, Taki was pleased to have given her latest spell a good trial. The Flame Sprites had proven useful, and allowed the shaman to free her attention to the larger battle. It would take some getting used to, but she was pondering what it might be like to have a mythical swarm of flame sprites filling the sky with firebolts.

With the last of the creatures taken care of, Morrigan moved to scratch Bubbles under the chin, a proud look on their face. “That’s right, who’s my little destroyer?” Bubbles, who had just enjoyed a particularly tasty snack and now praise from his master, let out a little satisfied purr that spurred smoke from his nose, warming the snow around him.
They’d taken care of the problem, but not without damage to the surrounding forest and fields. Morrigan figured that wasn’t much of a problem considering they’d contained most of the damage to one area rather than the villages that the mephits were attacking. That was a good deed, right? Morrigan was admittedly a stranger to morality and what it meant to actually do good deeds, but they figured that this counted as one. Or at least as good as it was going to get. Hey, and they’d done it intentionally, too! That had to count for something, right? The charlatan pulled their coat tighter around themselves, looking quite like the cat who’d got the cream. Secretly, they were looking forward to being able to get back to their wagon so they could write to Cantio Von Lumen and tell him about the fact that they’d actually, intentionally saved a village from vicious spirits. Maybe he’d actually be proud of them!
It was an entirely different feeling, having people who actually seemed to care about you for yourself. Morrigan wasn’t used to it and they certainly had no idea how to reciprocate the feeling. But maybe they were getting close.
Morrigan nodded as Shitakibo spoke to them, clicking their tongue to call forth their menagerie of animals. Nugget perched on their shoulder - Bubbles, trailing behind them, and Luna Rose climbing into their bag. “Sounds like a plan to me. There is an inn out there somewhere with a warm fire and a meal and my name written all over it. You’re free to join me in the merriment and celebration, if you’d like.” They offered as the two started setting away from the Ice Fields. “Drinks are on me tonight!”
