She snorts softly as she continues casting her eyes up and around the room. Yeah, a lot of places tended to be traps, that was for sure. "That's the way to go, honestly-- Wait," Izzy nods absently, only having to do a double take after the fact as she realizes what Shaa was saying. "You live underground?"
Before they can fully unpack that, though, someone speaks up, from behind them. Izzy's hand moves to the hilt of her sword out of reflex borne of an abundance of caution, that same caution that prevents her from pulling her steel just yet. A young woman, smiling as though they were welcome guests-- and that seeme to be the case. Her eyes drop to the basket in her arms before exchanging a dubious look with Shaa. Even without the benefit of their rings, she could easily discern his skepticism.
Still, the call of information not-yet gathered is a siren song to the fellblood. After looking at Shaa a few seconds longer, she gives him one slow blink, and clicks her tongue-- some apparent indication that maybe they should play along for a little with this apparition. Maybe they could get to the root of the cause.
"My friend and I, ah, apologise for the intrusion, Miss." Izzy says smoothly, flashing a winning smile as she pulls out one of the chairs to take a seat, as bidden. "It's a welcome surprise that you were expecting us... are you Marette, by any chance?" she asks, recalling the name that the jerkwad back down the mountain had used when they were regaled with the story.

The young woman blushes as she sets the basket on the table. Shaa can smell the fresh rolls even from where he was. If this was an illusion, it was one of the best he had ever seen. Oh, you flatter me Miss. The lady Marette was famous around here for her beauty and affable nature and I am afraid none of that applies to me. No, I am just a simple girl with a vested interest in the house, my name is Kwell. My master will join us shortly and will explain everything. In the mean time She holds her hand out towards the table please.
Shaa still didn’t think this added up but took at seat at the table, motioning Izzy to follow suit. But…the dishes… Yes, my grandmothers. When the master and I got here, the home was in ruins, burned to the foundations. It took a long time to put everything back together again. Shaa’s head was starting to hurt. So your’e not the original family and the house did really burn down. A deeper voice comes from the back. I’m afraid the story goes back even further than you may realize.
A man in a hat and a long black cloak walks into the room holding a some kind of large cooked bird in his hands. This is heavy Kwell he laughs. Where do you want this thing? Kwell hurries over, takes the bird, and places it towards the head of the table. Shaa looks over at Izzy, looking more confused than ever. He shrugs his shoulders, grabs a roll, an tears into it. He had the feeling he was in for yet another long story. The least he could do is have a snack while he sat through it.
My name is Roland, and you are Shaa and Issala if I am not mistaken. What, are you some kind of psychic? Roland laughs. I actually have friends in the camp, nothing quite so magical I’m afraid. Well at least that made sense. And the roll. That was pretty good too.
Look, I know how all this must seem. Frankly, I’d rather not have to explain any of it but who would have thought that adventurers of your caliber would come all of the way out here to nowhere? Talk about things that don’t make sense. Well when hell hounds go around winnowing down the locals, people get tetchy. Roland shakes his head and pours some wine from a bottle on the table. Nonsense. The hounds are deterrents, nothing more. No one has been actually hurt. I can think of a couple of crispy former residents who might disagree with that. Roland sighs and starts to cut into the bird while Kwell passes around some side dishes.
Despite the seeming connection, the fire that destroyed this house and the hell hounds are not actually related. True to the stories, the former residents, as you say, ignited the house on their own in attempt to escape their pursuers. An escape that worked I might add. I hear they are somewhere retired in the crescent isles. But, they were mear tenants of this house. A house that has been in my family for close to 10 generations. Kwell is actually my cousin on my mothers side. Someone from our family has always owned the home, until another of my cousins thought it a brilliant idea to lease it out to sharecroppers who, of course, promptly burned it down. We lost items that were nearly 200 years old. Tragic. Indeed cousin indeed.
But now, everything is nearly back to perfect. Roland dabs his mustached face with a table napkin. So, we have now fed you, hosted you, gave you a reasonable explanation. As much as I enjoy the company, the work of restoration never sleeps so I must ask you kindly to be on your way. It would be a great favor to me if you helped us keep people away. In two weeks, we will be finished with the house, we will unsummon the hounds and everyone will be fine. What do you say friends?
What could he say? It made sense in a weird way. All nice and neat. But something still didn’t jive. Shaa looks over at Izzy and raises an eyebrow.

Already seated as she was bidden, Izzy watches the young woman, who was not Marette, and her 'Master', Roland, bringing in a meal. Izzy was even reticent to eat, some niggling sense in the back of her mind that this was Strange Food and eating it could create a problem. Nonetheless, she didn't want to seem rude, carefully dipping a roll into the juices of the bird and taking a careful bite.
The corners of Izzy's smile tighten as this man she decidedly does not know says her name. Now, she hadn't been precisely careful about using her name around here-- she had, in fact, introduced herself as such to the group of bandit story-tellers back in the camp down the mountain, so there was merit to how this man had come into possession of her name. But Izzy's name was hers to give, and to hear it on the lips of someone she was not sure was a threat, but by her estimation, the man had even less reason to know Shaa's, as he had only just entered the camp barely an hour ago. "Ahh, you have friends at the camp! Do you mind my asking who that might be? Forgive my impertinence, I definitely don't recall your face there over the past few nights, and my companion just arrived. Word travels mighty fast, it seems."
Her brow furrows a little more as she and Shaa exchange a look. There was a non-zero chance that these people were here to claim whatever treasure was in this property-- at least, that was what it sounded like to her. As she chews thoughtfully, she recalls the story that their Friends down the mountain told them.
"Deterrent is an interesting way of putting it." Izzy muses out loud. "Though I seem to recall that the person in question that summoned those hell-hounds at the time was Victor McCreedy. He was after Miss Marette, who does not appear present, and apparently you and your cousin here, or at least your family, are, what, the landlords of this property? Funny how that isn't ever really mentioned in the story." Izzy drums her fingers on the wood restlessly-- but in a pattern.
Convinced this was some sort of spell, some sort of strange magic that was at effect here, her ember eyes glow bright for just a moment as she flattens her hand on the table, pushing out negative energy into the room to dispell whatever it was these two were trying to hide from them[1].

Roland laughs as he takes one of the knives on the table and jams it into a random piece of fruit. What you heard was just a story at a bar. One that has been told and retold over years with countless variations. Not exactly a reliable source. Roland pulls the fruit up to his mouth and takes a bite. I have heard variation myself where Marette was eaten by the hell hounds. There was yet another variation where Marette tried to run off with a suitor and was accidentally killed by her father who burned the house down in grief. There was that one that they weren’t even hell hounds but tiny howling drakes. Kwell interjects. Roland snorts and chokes a bit on the fruit. That’s right, I nearly forgot that one. Just nonsense and the bored machinations of people with way too much time on their hands. Indeed.
Roland considers the fruit a moment and places it carefully back down on the table. Izzy continues to press him and then, unsatisfied with the answers, casts her counter spell.
Oh dear, it appears as if you have let my pets come out to play. Kwell looks absolutely distraught as she starts grabbing as many plates as possible. Master Roland, the dishes. Roland shrugs a bit looking very unconcerned. I’m very sorry cousin, it can’t be helped. You know how they get when we have guests. While the room hasn’t changed, Shaa notices a couple things that have changed when the counter spell took place. Both Roland and Kwell looked much paler and now both had red sharp eyes. The other thing he noticed as Roland took a bite of the fruit. He also now had fangs. Dang it.
Izzy watch out! They’re vampires!

Vindication was a sweet, sweet feeling. There was something wrong here! It was proven! Once again her investigative skills were second to none, and she was the Smartest. She could practically preen at her own brilliance.
That feeling was then immediately replaced by the gravity of their situation as the vampires rounded on them. That was certainly an issue.
"My. What big teeth you have."
Grabbing the edge of the table, Izzy abruptly stands, pushing the table sharply to shove it towards Roland and Kwell and put some distance between the vampires and them. She backs towards Shaa and draws her rapier. Outside the howls of the Hellhounds began to be heard again, a cacophany that rings out through the darkening skies outside the cabin. "Welp. That's one mystery solved."
She turns back to the vampires. "So sorry to have to, ah, decline your dinner invitation, but I really rather think this particular vintage needs a few more years in the cask, if ya catch my meaning." she gestures to herself and flashes a casual wink, combined with a smile that does not quite reach her eyes. "So if you'd be so kind as to fuck off with your little pets and your fangs, which I am not jealous of, and get out of dodge, we can allll call it a day."
She doubted that would go over very well, but at least it gave her and Shaa a second to evaluate the amout of threats that were in the area.

Like a rush of lava, several hell hounds burst into the room and start to approach from either side of the large table. Kwell starts to swat at them from the side. No, no no, bad puppies! You get down. I swear if one dish gets broken, there will be consequences. Roland! Get them under control! Roland just shrugs. They have been cooped up, you know how they get. The one closest to Shaa starts to give a low growl. Bad puppies. Stay…stay. The Minotaur grabs a drink from the table and splashes it in the hell hounds face. The liquid evaporates before it even gets near him. Apparently even the gesture is enough to piss it off.
The hell hound jumps at Shaa’s face, claws out and mouth agape. Shaa turns a bit and grabs the creature’s claw, pulling it forward and hard into the wall behind them. The impact is hard enough to make the dinnerware shake. Kewell is 1/4 clearing tableware and gives an audible grunt as she hears the clanging supperware. A second hell hound has quickly replaced the first. Watch your sides, they might come from under the table. With that, a pair of firey fangs snaps at him from under the table. He jumps out of the way and then, unexpectedly, feels his legs start to buckle . What the….
It’s ok my friend jud sleep. It’s time to sleep. That didn’t sound right. It wasn’t nap time was it? Shaa’s eyes go blurry and he can feel himself starting to fall. Don’t…..worry …you go……. These are the last words Shaa remembers as he falls to the floor in a jumbled heap. The last image he sees is of Izzy passed out on the floor close to him.

"That's what I'm hopin' for," she flashes a feral grin, lashing out with a kick into the face of one of the hell hounds snapping at them from under the large dining table. It yelps, pulling back for a moment, only to be replaced by another.
Her thoughts whirl furiously. In tight spaces, she and Shaa could do some pretty considerable damage together. They were both scrappy sorts, and she could rely on his large size and skill while she performed some trickery on the other side. A spell on her lips, she draws a rapier, beginning the spell.
Shaa crumples, and Izzy blanches.
"Shit-- Shaa!" Panic arcs through her like an electric jolt. Abandoning her plan, Izzy reaches for him, her other hand fumbling with her pockets. If she can just get to the key and get to a door, she can get them both out of here--
It was here's a wave of enervating energy that rolls over her like a wave. Unlike Shaa, who had been able to withstand it for a few seconds, his legs only buckling before his collapse, Izzy goes down like a sack of bricks, as if thrown to the floor by her imbalance. Dazed, she hits the ground, looking at the swimming vision of Shaa, still trying desperately to reach out and grasp him before her world goes black.

Whatever spell they had been hit with had really thrown Shaa for a loop. He was not quite sure how much time had past. He just remembered the dinner….then hell hounds…and ….vampires. Izzy? Where was Izzy? The big Minotaur forces his eyes open to the dark blurr of what looked to be some sort of torch lit cellar. He was chained to a wall while his two hosts were doing something ominous in the middle of the room. They apparently had not realized he was awake yet so he took the opportunity to assess what was happening.
The cellar itself was large and made of cobblestone from floor to ceiling. It was large enough that it probably covered the entire square footage of the house. Further in, there were storage shelves and wine racks and large wooden casks. Some of them looked like they could be hundreds of years old. At least that tracked with what Roland had told them. In fact, there was a good chance he had been entirely truthful about the whole thing. Well, except for the whole being a vampire part. Considering that they were vampires, he got the sinking suspicion that some of those wine bottles might not be wine at all.
Shaa tries to keep his breathing as even as possible as he continues to look around the room for any sign of Izzy. He finally spies her shape on the other side of the room, probably locked up like he is. Grrrrrrrrrr. He looks over only to find one of the hell hounds has taken an interest in him. Roland looks up and smiles a toothy smile. Ahhh you are awake! Excellent. Forgive the accommodations, things were getting a bit hostile upstairs. You understand of course. Sure I do. It’s so problematic when your food tries to become a to go order. Roland laughs hard. Oh you are funny but fear not my friend. It is not out intention to eat you, truely. As I said before, we just need to finish our little ritual and all will be right in the world. We just want to fix our home. Is that too much to ask? Seems reasonable to me cousin. Roland nods reluctantly. I’m afraid our reputation may have gotten the better of us this time.
Shaa hated to admit it, but they did have a point. They had been in the house for centuries and no one even suspected they had a family of vampires living here. He himself had been misjudged for being a Minotaur on a seemingly weekly basis. Was he being too harsh on them? You said you were restoring the house. Why do you need a ritual for that? Seems like a good set of tools and some lumber would work. Roland looks over at him thoughtfully. It’s true, if simple construction where the issue we would have been done a long time ago. But what you don’t understand is that there is a reason we built this house here in the middle of nowhere. A treasure, not of gold but…Roland! Of course, of course. Hand me that brazier cousin.
What was the end of that sentence ? Shaa did not want to stick around to find out.

The fellblood came too, groggily, with the distant sound of voices echoing around her. Smarmy and superior; unfamiliar. Low and angry... that one, now, was very familiar. A comforting familiarity. Shaa. He was alright, then. Or, at least, talking. If he was safe, she could relax a little.
In her addled state, she can barely grasp what the words being spoken are meant to mean, but she doesn't open her eyes. Not yet. First, she has to get her bearings. She is currently slumped forward, hanging by her wrists from rusty metal chains with her hair hanging in her face. Her knees dig uncomfortably into a similarly cold stone floor... agh, her neck hurts. How long has she been in this position? Too long to be comfortable, but Izzy is patient. She can suffer through a crick in her neck if it means no one suspects anything of her. Best not to tip her hand, not when they've already gotten the jump on them.
Her satchel, cloak, and weapons are removed, but she can feel some of her other items lurking in the secret pockets. At least they didn't go looking too hard. That was a relief.
Now, where was Shaa in relation to her?
Through the veil of her hair, Izzy carefully lifts her eyes. Her mountain of curls are hardly transparent, but she can hear Shaa's faint growl of anger, and he doesn't sound nearby. Close, but not within reach.
She sighs, inwardly, limp in her chains. Well. Maybe she could cause a distraction. Make them pause long enough so she and Shaa could get a jump.
It doesn't take long before a plan forms in her mind. Izzy fingers twitch, ever so slightly, as she casts a spell[1]
Knock, knock, knock.
Sounding as though it came from upstairs, there was a distant sound of knocking. Like someone at the door. The Hell Hounds wheeled, snarling at the sound, and looking towards the stairs, wherever they were.

Shaa’s head was getting clearer by the moment and his mind was racing for a way out. He was never one who felt comfortable with confinement and this situation was getting more uncomfortable by the second. Suddenly there is a knocking noise from upstairs. Was there someone else there? The hell hounds definitely heard it and started shuffling around anxiously. This may be his chance to make a move and get he and Izzy out of there.
Did you hear that cousin? Could hardly miss it. Are you going to send the hounds.? No, it might be one of the nosier villagers. Best not to get anyone else more anxious than necessary. You go check the door and I’ll take the hounds out back. These two will be fine for now. Won’t you my dear Minotaur. Sure, you know, just hanging around. Prisoner jokes, you really are funny. But I swear, it won’t be long now and you and your friend can go your own way. Come now cousin. Yes, of course.
When the hosts departed and they found themselves alone, Shaa looked up to confirm they were good. Izzy! Hang on! Shaa saw the keys on the other side of the room. Shaa shots a small lightning bolt at them and magnetizes them. Soon enough, the keys start pulling themselves towards his chains. As they come flying forward, Shaa grabs them and uses them to free himself l he then runs over to Izzy to do the same. With a couple quick maneuvers, her chains are unlocked as he reaches out to steady her.
Come on. I don’t have a good feeling abut this ritual. We have to bail before… Before he could finish the sentence, a cloud of white smoke emerges from the center of the room. As the smoke starts to coalesce, he can see what looks like several pairs of yellow eyes shine through the mist. Yup, that’s our que. Shaa grabs one of the braziers and spills its burning contents on the floor. He hears some sort of hissing noise from the mist. Not wanting to wait around to see what was coming, Shaa bends to offer Izzy a shoulder to support their exit.

She listens, limp and unmoving, not even daring to change her breathing. Actively forcing herself not to even smile on the off chance it moved her ears slightly. Come on, come on, on with it already, she thinks in their general direction. Go take a little peek, have a look and see who knocked, it won't hurt you none, just goooo alreadyyyyyy.
At last, both of their captors decide to go, splitting up so they can cover more ground. Confident that their prisoners won't be going anywhere. As she hears the footsteps and the nails of the hellhounds fading from earshot, she allows herself that triumphant little grin as she lifts her head. "HAhahaA. I STilll gOt iT."
Though apparently not all of her faculties, just yet.
She reaches into her hair to try and find a pick, but can't seem to get the thing in the lock on the manacle-- her body is still wracked with the remnants of the spell, non-compliant with her request for dexterity. Thankfully, Shaa is at the rescue, quickly opening the door to her cell and snapping off the manacles with a deft pop with the key.
Released, Izzy attempts to stand, only to slump forward and against his chest for a second. "Oof." She allows him to steady her, giving him a wide, loopy smile. "Heyyyy big guuuy. 'm fiiiIiIiiineee, You okay?" She tries to reach up to his head while he talks, saying something that was undoubtedly important about getting the fuck out of here, but her still-addled mind wanted to make sure the minotaur wasn't concussed. He had fallen pretty hard.
It's then that the eyes appear in the mist. "Oop." she flings another counterspell[1] at the the mist and the eyes, hoping to stall whatever was watching them a little further, and perhaps prevent it from coming through. At least long enough for them to escape. "NoooOoOoo pEeKinGggG,," she titters, leaning gratefully on Shaa as she offers her his support so they can escape. Gods, her knees
"We gottaaa get m'stuff, gonna stab these... fuckinnn walnuts." she grumbles, patting down her pocket with her free hand. "If we find a door, I can get us out and back to my place. Just... where's that damn keeey..."

As Shaa helps Izzy over to the stairs, curiosity gets the best him. He stares into the swirling mist, his eyes blurry try to peer into the mass. The yellow eyes are now squeezing together and moving around franticly. Whatever spell that Izzy had managed to fling at it, was definitely doing something. At the moment, whatever it was, was still semi corporeal eyeballs so at least they had that going for them.
He tried to focus on escaping but…he couldn’t let it go, this whole thing just didn’t make any sense. Vampires summoning hell hounds, fine. Own house over generations. No problem. Even wanting a house away from the public. Made tons of sense. But them still being alive? The only thing that he could think of was that he and Izzy were not exactly plain Jane humanoids. Shaa had been referred to a monster/ beast/ creature on more than one occasion. Was it possible that the vampires were keeping them alive simply because they saw them as some sort of weird kindred spirit? Just a bunch of fellow monsters sitting around eating tapas and finger sandwiches like it was a regular ole day. Shaa felt kind of insulted but not really. It was one of the super rare occasions that being considered a monster was actually a good thing!
Izzy! Hang on, we are almost out. The two started up the stairs towards the door that led to the upper rooms. As weird as it may sound, we might not actually be in as much danger as I thought. I think these vampires might see us as like….for lack of a better term…. naughty pets or something. That’s the problem with these multi century guys, they always see regular creatures as children or pets or whatever. We literally got put in the corner…. But their version of the corner is a basement full of summoning creatures. Go figure.
Shaa stops on the steps. They were almost out. The smart rational part of him screamed “ hey dummy! Use their assumptions against them to bail, who cares if they see you as lesser beings?” The stupid irrationally angry violent Minotaur side of him, ironically the side that they were expecting, said “Hey Dummy. Go upstairs and tear those jokers limb from limb and make sure they know who they were messing with.” It did not escape him that both sides thought he was being a dummy. He was half drugged on a staircase at the moment so he didn’t exactly have any way of arguing the point. Big dummy.
Shaa looked over at Izzy. One of the best things he liked about her is that she was not afraid of the smart ideas or….sometimes the more Minotaurish ones. Erghhh I’m sorry. No escaping today. I have too much Minotaur in me to let this nonsense go. What do you say we turn this thing up?

"ShoOw me thE wAy to Go HoMee..." Izzy sing-mumbles to herself, still coming around to her more rational mind as she pats away at her many pockets, trying to find the right one that had the gods forsaken key in it--
Distracted immediately by Shaa's words, Izzy's head lists to one side, looking at him as they move up the stairs. Her brows arch upward. Like... naughty pets?
Her mind still wasn't all there yet, so she did not have the wherewithal to explore why she hated that idea more than being used as a sacrifice in some weird vampire ritual, but she makes a face. It was one thing to be thought a monster, one thing to be treated as Other by the people around you because you were unconventionally unlike the majority-- in fact, she had capitalized on it often, both with people who found her exotic or novel, and with people who found her outright terrifying. That, however, had been her choice to exploit those biases for her own benefit. This, on the other hand, stepped on their autonomy, the key ability to be free to make choices. Issala Arodre belonged to no one, and more importantly, neither did Shaa. Not without thier express consent, at least.
...Hearth's Day rings notwithstanding.
So when Shaa paused, apologising that he could not let this lie, he found her grinning back at him with dark glee. It seemed they were of a mind. "Aaah, Shaa. You always know how to show a girl a good time." she pats his shoulder and eases herself more upright. Legs were still a little wobbly, but her faculties were rapidly returning. "No such thing as 'too much' minotaur in my book. Though I think these mosquitoes are about to find out just how feral their little 'pets' truly were." The smile shifts, slightly. Less of a friendly, rakish grin, and more of a predator baring her teeth. "I'll follow your lead, Big Guy."

Shaa smiled like a displacer beast in front of a one legged bar be que salesman. Nope, there was no quiet slinking away from here. Regardless if his suspicions were correct or not, these jackwads were not taking him seriously. A mistake that others had made in the past and paid the price.
As they reach the top of the stairs, Shaa puts his broad shoulder to the door frame and shoves hard. The door strains under the pressure but stays strong. The big Minotaur grunts, grits his teeth and shoves hard again against the door. This time, the door groans under the strain and buckles noisily at the hinges.
As the two fighters push through the gap, they find themselves in a narrow hallway. The hallway is adorned with red wallpaper that was curling in places, obviously old. The walls were lined with small painted portraits. He thought he recognized one of them as their involuntary host. Just how old was this guy? Speaking of which, neither vampire is anywhere to be seen. The only thing there were the two groggy fighters and a pair of red eyes belonging to a noticeably chubby hellhound who was giving them the business.
With Izzy at his side, the two stared at the chunky beast in silence. Why was it there? Was it there to guard the door? Was he about to attack? To Shaa, it looked more annoyed than anything. Feeling the stalemate, Shaa decided that they couldn’t just stand there. He stamps hard on the ground and suddenly a line of giant thorns burst up through the floor making a bee line for hellhound. Despite its size, the beast hops backwards several paces until the thorns stop sprouting. He is not amused.
Shaa squints his eyes waiting for the creature to howl and call for backup. To his surprise, the beast doesn’t howl, only stares back at them menacingly. Ummm what’s up with this guy? The hellhound snarls and then jumps on the wall. He twists his body again and now he is hanging from the ceiling like a giant fiery bat. He then starts stalking them from the ceiling avoiding the thorns entirely. Shaa watches in disbelief. He was having a hard time reconciling his feelings of admiration for the beast with his feelings of also wanting to punch it in the face.
Shaa looks at Izzy and cocks an eyebrow. I almost hate doing this but… He reaches up and touches the ceiling as well this time , a mass of vines burst from the ceiling tangling the beast and hanging it like a cranky piñata. The hellhound growls and thrashes, entangling it further until it stops, exhausted. You were gritty and I respect that, so you can just hang out for now.
They take the hallway away from the mass of thorns back into the kitchen. He can hear voices but there is still no one in sight. The kitchen is fully stocked with various food and utensils.
