Meandering her way back from the Dragon's Cradle South was a fun little jaunt, in Izzy's book. Fun in the sense that it was fraught with danger, both environmental and personal, but it was also scenic. The mountains of the Devil's Ridge were a veritable labryinth, filled with people who would rather not be found and those who were trying to do the hunting. Izzy was already done her hunt, more or less. That was back North. Now she was headed back South to get to Zeinav proper, but that didn't mean she couldn't have a little fun now and again.
Sadly, a decent tavern-- hell, even a decent dive-- was pretty hard to come by in the mountains like this. Drinking spots were few and far between, unless one counted the dubious swill some of the locals tended to store in flasks that smelled more like fermenting sewer water than anything truly drinkable (she tried it to confirm; definitely would get you drunk, but also poisoned).
And so, Izzy was pleasantly surprised when she strolled into a small settlement of bridgands and generally surly folk and found a watering-hole of sorts, a place for these folk to hang out and drink stolen liquor to their heart's content. They eyed up the big, alabaster fellblood woman as she sauntered into the encampment with the suspicion and wariness of a group who knew what kind of harm a stranger could do; while they did not exactly welcome her, they didn't send her off, either. Or try to kill her.
They seemed on edge, all in all, as she settled against a rock with her cup of spiced Crescent Islian rum, but not because of her-- not any person, near as se could tell. Something in the way they glanced towards the hills as the faint grey sun that managed to cast pale light through the clouds of ash and smoke started on it's downward descent from the sky, in the way they froze when they heard a distant howl echoing from between the rocks. Weird, that.
Izzy kicks back against the rock as she watches, drink in one hand and cigar in the other, watching this group for signs of trouble. Or, whatever was troubling them.

Shaa had been walking for several days now, a crumpled piece of paper shoved hastily in his bag. There had been rumors at the fighters guild that a pack of unruly monsters had taken up residence in the area. Things had been pretty slow lately so it was decided someone needed to come over and verify if there were any truth to the rumors. They had all drawn straws to see who would be making the trip and somehow, Shaa had ended up pulling the shirt one. Fate was surely against him as he had actually drawn first. Annoyied that this trip may ultimately be for nothing, Shaa had determined to go and get back as soon as possible. He wasn’t sure how, but he had a feeling that someone had actually cheated.
As he walks down a seemingly deserted road, he catches a burr in his hoof that makes him pause. Son of a motherless goat! He groused, sitting on a rock and trying to pry out the burr with a random stick he found. As he worked on the problem, two men came walking around the bend. I’m telling you I heard them! Said the first one to his companion. You can believe what you want , but there are at least 4 of them, probably more. I’m not going back till Daggon takes care of it.
With a loud click, Shaa finally dislodges the burr. What are you guys talking about? He asks abruptly. Just a bunch of nonsense from a layabout if you ask me. Said the second man. Both men were wearing black leather armor with daggers and swords hanging of belts at their sides. The first man was younger, in his 20 s, with grey eyes and a mowhawk. The second man was a bit older and rounder in the middle. He was also missing several teeth with a wicked scar up the side of his face.
Says you! We come from up a small camp just up there. The rough and tumble types if you get my meaning. There was apparently some bounty put out on some beasts out this way but none of these shakers will get after it, and I don’t blame em! Not when you hear them….in the dark
Shaa thought that this had to be where all the rumors were coming from. I’ll check it out, thanks. The boggy man is like my best friend, I’m sure it will be fine. Suit yourself snarked the middling man. Big waste of time you ask me. Shaa took his leave and soon found the camp. It didn’t take long to find the local watering hole where he suddenly spots a familiar and welcome face among the rabble.

He is impossible to miss, nearly as impossible to miss as Izzy herself is. She didn't expect to see him here out in the middle of nowhere, of all places, but a bright smile splits across her face, flashing her too-sharp teeth as she pops to her feet, arms open, hands filled with cigars and drink.
"As I live and breathe, Shaa, baby, buddy, darling, pal!" she greets him warmly, invitig the big man into a hug. Still taller than her. That was fine, though, it was fiiiine, it was fine. Shaa was good people, he was allowed. "It's been far too long, gorgeous, how you been? What brings you all the way out into the middle of nowhere? Come, come, I got a spot right over here with your name on it!" She beckons him over to where she was sitting, so he can rest his feet for a bit, and they can catch up in softer tones. Those who lived at the camp in a more long term sense were quiet, listening intently to the lands beyond the camp itself.
"Buncha cagey sods," She mumbles as an aside to Shaa, regarding the group that they were able to look out on from the vantage point she'd been resting at when he'd arrived.

Izzy! Shaa says with a smile as the boisterous woman greets her friend warmly. Shaa was relieved that, even if this quest turned out to be a rotten potato, at least Izzy was here to keep things interesting. It was always nice to run into friends unexpectedly when you were shuffling out on the road. I’m glad to see you. When you engage in our kind of fun, I always wonder a bit. Shaa pulls up a stool and gets comfortable. Doing a quick check around the room, Shaa can see several sets of eyes staring at the pair. That wasn’t anything new really but it didn’t hurt to make sure someone wasn’t up to something.
I’m ok, working on the elementalist stuff. How about you? This place is a bit out of the way don’t you think? I wouldn’t even be here at all but I lost a bet back at the guild. He gives a half hearted chuckle and notes that a couple of the patrons shifted uncomfortably when he mentioned the fighters guild. It was mercs like this that the guild had to regularly contend with so they had a pretty mixed reputation with the cloak and dagger types. It usually wasn’t an issue but he was far from base and if there was trouble, he would be on his own. Or he would have been if he hadn’t run into Izzy. He knew that if something went sideways, she would have his back.
Shaa grabbed a somewhat dirty mug and tested the local fare. Well I’m here on a bet. Something about some troublesome monsters running around eating babies or some nonsense. What are you doing here?

"Oooh~, leave you wondering, do I?" Izzy releases the hug to waggle her eyebrows at Shaa, snickering around her smile as she reclines next to him, the very picture of casual familiarity, draping herself over whatever passed for furniture like she owned the place. Which, she decidedly did not. She draws a long puff on her cigar, listening to what Shaa had been up to last she'd seen him. Good to see him, too, in all honesty. In her line of work, more often than not, the folks you didn't hear from after a while wound up dead or imprisoned.
"Ooooh keepin' busy, doin' the private investigator stuff, tryna see about that new guild the uhhhh Wet... wait,no, not that one. It's theeee," she snaps her fingers a few times, as if trying to summon the word, before it pops back into her head. "Expedition Forces! That one. Elemetalist stuff, huh? That's the, uh... earth, water, fire, wind schools, yeah? I gotta say, your repetoire is pretty well expanded. I've gotten some good use out of this gorgeous thing," she grins and tilts her head down to tap against the still-bloodstained ring that Izzy wore as decoration around one of her gnarled horns. "Gotten me out of a couple of scrapes. Yeah, it's a bit out of the way, but the job takes me where the wind blows! And where the people need a little snoopin'." She cackles, puffs of smoke exiting the corners of her mouth. "Mostly, though. I'm just moving from one job to the next as I make my way back to Zeinav City."
Izzy reaches over to steer Shaa's hand away from whatever bilge-water was in a flask and direct him to the very much stolen Crescent Islian rum, which was less likely to give him botulism. Her brows arch, as Shaa again mentions losing a bet. "Pfff, what kind of bet did you lose?"
In the distance, as the grey sun begins to burn orange over the horizon when it sets, there's a peal of gutteral howls, a chorus that echoes over the copse of stone Shaa and Izzy find themselves in. The chorus sounds a ways off yet, but far closer than the other howls they had heard thus far. The rest of the tavern pauses and tenses up, looking grim. Izzy takes a look at this, and turns her gaze back to Shaa. "Whaaat was that you mentioned about some, uh, monsters?"

The hug makes him happy as most beings usually run away from or are crushed by them in general where he is concerned. It was nice having friends that could handle themselves and Izzy was no slouch. Shaa looks at the blood stained ring and smiles. I’m glad that you are getting more use out of it than it’s previous owner. He laughs a bit and happily takes the more appealing drink. He had a solid constitution for most things but no reason he should tax it if he didn’t have to. He takes a moment to explain about the mysterious rumor that came into the guild and how he got bamboozled into checking it out.
Between you and me though.. he goes on.. I’d rather be here with you chasing mystery monsters than back there doing paperwork and keeping rookies out of trouble. We have taken some pretty heavy hits recently, lost some good people. I’m trying to do everything I can to keep it together but… honestly I wish I could find Athena. It would make my life infinitely easier. She was always better at the guild leader stuff than I could ever hope to be. Shaa took a moment and stared at the mug, swirling the liquid around a bit, the waves in the cup chasing themselves in an endless loop. Psttt listen to me go on. Sorry about that. Anyway, I ran into some guys on the way over here that said that people around here knew something. That someone had gone missing. Do you know anyone here we could ask?

Izzy blinks, surprised, a little by Shaa's... what could you call it... sincerity. She had friends, sure, but it wasn't often someone said that they'd rather be in her presence, even if it was just for the fun and thrill of hunting down information, being in the wind and doing whatever the hell she wanted. And it sounded like Shaa had even more responsibilities on his shoulders than she had originally realized. It was a little shocking to see a man like him, someone she knew to be incredibly strong in more ways than one, to be so weighed down.
"Nah, nah, man, what's this about?" she tips foward again, relinquishing the relaxed posture for one of more interest. For once, the ever-present smile on Izzy's face is muted; still there, but softened with concern. [col=red]"You don't have to apologise to Ya Girl Izzy. Some shit's got you bogged down, obviously. I don't know a lot about this guild, but if this leader lady? Athena? Is missing, I will help you find her. Alright?"[/color] She gives his furry arm a pat and folds her leg under her, smoking thoughtfully for a second as she regards the slap-dash set up around them. Really more of a camp than a tavern.
"Mmm. Well, that guy over there?" She lifts her chin in the direction of a half-orc sitting with a group of people, all looking tense at the howls that had been reverberating through the canyon, though he himself seemed to be holding it together. "I haven't been here that long, but he's the one folks have been going back and forth between, especially when those howls kick up. Some kind of mercenary type. Hasn't been belligerent or anything."

Shaa looked over at the half Orc and considered the approach. He didn’t recognize him from anything which could be a good or bad thing but there was no point in putting it off. He wasn’t exactly getting any prettier. The half Orc was tall but slender, unusual for an orc. However Shaa noticed his body was full of scars and the tell tale signs of battle. He wore the black leather armor and had various kinds of knives stashed all around him. Not someone to take lightly by any means but he wasn’t exactly the careful type himself. Screw it.
As Shaa walked up to him , no one even bothered to look up or acknowledge him. They just kept talking to each other and eating as if they were the only ones in the world. As Shaa watched them incredulously, he decided enough was enough and he needed to, somehow, be even more obvious.
Shaa reaches over to one of the full mugs of ale and touches the side. The group looks curiously at him but continues their conversations. Soon stream is starting to rise from the mug as some of the group grow increasingly concerned. The mug then erupts violently spraying hot ale all over those around the table. The group jumps from the from the table and starts pulling for weapons. Ohhh so you guys can see me? I thought I had died and gone to the afterlife full of obnoxious bung holes. With a growl, one of the fighters comes after Shaa’s right side with a dagger. The wiley Minotaur steps back and grabs the fighters arm, yanking him forward over the table and onto the floor. A second fighter with a dirk takes a swipe at Shaa’s snout. He spins out of the way to dodge the directed blow. As he comes back around, Shaa grabs the back of the fighters head and slams his face into the table with a loud thunk noise.
The half orc slams down his hand on the table. ENOUGH! Knock it off before the Minotaur gets serious and actually tries to hurt you one of you morons. Sit down! The men immediately stop and return to their seats, several casting shooting looks at Shaa as they sit. Ok stranger, you have our attention, how can we be of assistance? Shaa watched as several of the men were still thumbing the pommel of their daggers. Funny. That didn’t seem helpful. I just need some information about the monsters that have been plaguing the area. Tell me, what do you know…

"Shaaaa. Buuud. What are yoooou-- oh, there he goes." Izzy watches the minotaur get up to go over to the group. He hadn't gotten around to responding to her query about helping him out with this Athena, whomst ever she was, but there were bigger problems at hand, of course.
Like Shaa introducing the table of mercenaries to a hot toddy of a sort. An impromptu one. Izzy bursts into raucous cackles as the fight breaks out and quickly comes to a stop, sliding off the rock she had used for a chair and sauntering over to catch what all this is, leaning her arm on one of Shaa's broad shoulders ever so casually, while she buffs her nails on her shirt. "Listen, you gotta hand it to the big guy, he's certainly unforgettable, wouldn't you say~?" She flashes the table a too-sharp smile, particularly those still with their hands on their weapons. "Though I've seen him hit folks hard enough to knock 'em back into next week. Word to the wise."
The half orc raises his brows, bemused. "And you are?"
"Issala Arodre, private investigator extraordinaire, at your service~. And this here's my partner, Shaa Rhunn. You might've heard of him. Sooo." Izzy arches her brow with a smirk, draping herself over Shaa's shoulders sinuously, as though she were a particularly strange feather boa. "What's the skinny on the monsters? And does it have anything to do with those howls out there?"

The half Orc looks at the pair and quickly decides that discretion is the better part of valor. He addresses Izzy directly , mostly to piss Shaa off further. Look look here…ummm Izzy was it? We are just here on a job, that’s it. Despite my friend…and if I may say so…your friends “ table manners”, you will find that we can be quite accommodating when we need to be. This guy was a lot smoother than Shaa expected. Yeah yeah, whatever you say buddy. I just don’t like being ignored. Turning to finally address Shaa. Probably not much of a problem for you I am sure. Why don’t you just apologize to my companions here, and we can all be friends. You want to be friends right? The half Orc smiled the kind of smile a Gnoll does right before he tries to eat you face first. Shaa kept his guard up.
Most of my friends try and keep the stabbing to a minimum. Why don’t you have your buddies apologize first for being rude and we’ll take it from there…. Buddy. The half Orc studied him carefully. Sure sure. My name is Leago by they way, as long as we are doing introductions. And this bunch of rowdy boys are the Iron Reavers. The Iron Reavers? Ugh, Shaa wanted to punch this guys face just on principle. You all are sorry now right? The fighter coos. Yeah yeah real sorry. The group half heartedly chants in unison. See now friends? Everyone is all good. Yeah we know about the beasts of the mountain. Even heard some helpful tips that we can share with….our friends. We just need your apology, what do you say?
Shaa looks over at Izzy who seems as calm as a summer breeze. What do you say Izzy? You want to be friends with these guys? Or do we show, them what happens to the rude and unfriendly. Some of the Iron Reavers shifted in their chair, waiting for her response.

Izzy cannot help but preen as the attention is directed to her, and she poses where she is draped across Shaa's shoulders like a misbegotten feather boa, as though for a painting, a la Sol City, one hand flung against her forehead as though swooning. "Accomodating, hmmmmm? I must admit, I do like the sound of that."
But despite the usual cavalier attitude and casual irreverence that exudes from her very pores, Izzy keeps a very close eye on this group. She doesn't trust them one litte bit, never mind their insincere and half-assed apologies for being so very rude to Shaa. They deserved what they got. The big guy, this leader of the Iron Reavers, was at least amicable enough... though he was smooth. Too smooth. Someone who was playing an angle, maybe, or just trying to save their own ass.
Maybe they could use that to their advantage.
At the very minimum, it was interesting. Izzy grins as Shaa turns his unbothered gaze her way, her smile full of knives and ill intent. It's a smile as slow and heady as molasses, sickly sweet and thick enough to trap the unsuspecting. "Aww, I think we can be friends! Just look at 'em; They don't want to pick a fight with the the pair of us, right?" she all but purrs, lifting a hand to drum her talons on the table.
Though her eyes slide over to Shaa, one brow lifting slightly to see what his vote was... but the true message was clear, in the sly lilt of her smile that touched her eyes with a predator's glint. 'Friends', until it became inconvenient. Friends, until they least expected it. Friends, until they got what they needed-- then? All bets were off.
"So, friends~," Her smile snaps back to boistrous and lazy, larger than life. "The job. The shindig. Gonna fill us in on the skinny?"

He had to do it, he had to. The difference between young Minotaurs and old Minotaurs were that if you even managed to make it to being old, you learned how to be shrewd, even if it was painful. It basically took every ounce of strength that Shaa had to fight against his Minotaur DNA and not make these guys eat their table. Ok friendo….I’m ….soooorrrryyeeeee….. Shaa said the words slowly and carefully as they felt like acid in his mouth. He had never actually eaten a crow before but, if the saying held up, he would be sure to pass if it ever came up.
Well now, see? Isn’t that a much better place to be in? Leago said smiling and casually waving his hands around as if he were conducting some sort of invisible orchestra. As for your question, it’s a bit of a story. The mercenaries all relaxed a bit as if they were about to hear something that they had heard many times before.
To really explain it correctly, we have to back about 20 years or so. Up the mountain a bit there is a certain small village. It’s so small it doesn’t have a name or anything, about 50 people, farmers, ranchers and the like. As the story goes, one of these farmers had a daughter. Marette. Piped up one of the mercenaries from the side. Yes I know, just calm down. Anyway, this farmer had a beautiful daughter named Marette. The story goes that she was so beautiful, the morning birds refused to sing until left the cottage.
When she was old enough, several suitors came and tried to court the farmers daughter. From all around they came. They brought all sorts of precious jewelry, art and riches to persuade the farmer to give up his daughter. The farmer however was greedy. He would take the suitors gifts and offerings but would never actually commit to any man the hand of his daughter. There was a murmur in the crowd as other people gathered to hear the apparently very popular story. The suitors started talking to each other and soon realized that they were being tricked. Having had enough, they came to the farm to force the farmer to make a decision or….get what they came for.
Now this farmer was no fool and knew his shenanigans would come to an end eventually. To prepare, he had purchased some of the meanest, ugliest most ill tempered puppies you could find and raised them as guard dogs. So when the men came for him, he was ready. He released the dogs and they tore into the suitors like a Gnoll into a chicken. The suitors all ran away in a panic, the vicious beasts behind them. All, but one. McCreedy. Oooooooo…The crowd hushed at the mention of the name. Victor McCreedy was the richest and most powerful of the suitors. While the dogs chased off the others, he had another idea. Waiting until it was all clear, Victor snuck around the back of the house…and set it ablaze. Ahhhhhhh! The crowd got loud at the mention. Despite being a slaad licker, Shaa had to admit Leago was a pretty decent story teller. Now seeing their master in trouble, the dogs all came back and burst into the house…but no one ever came back. Folks told stories later. Some say the farmer and the daughter got away. Some say Victor plotted the whole thing and they all left together. Others were sure they died in such a big fire.
Leago shifts in his chair a bit. But that’s all academic..until about 3 months ago when the howling started. People are saying that someone tried to rummage the remains of the house for the loot. When they did, the hounds showed up. Still there. Still waiting for their master. So there you have it. Some people are here for the hounds as the villagers aren’t exactly happy about it, others smell possible treasures. So tell me….why are you here? He asks with his cold smile.

Izzy can't help but snicker softly as Shaa does his absolute best to get the apology out. She pats his horn idly, and nods sagely. He did good. Now they could catch the group unawares if they needed to.
But the man did not appear to be as unaware as she had initially hoped.
While she listens intently to the story, she twists atop her perch of Shaa's shoulders, still draped there, her mind whirls with the possibilities. It was a decent yarn, and Izzy was a sucker for a good story. She was quickly enthralled with Leago's prose. And while at the end of the day, stories were stories, Izzy was all too aware that they almost always had a thread of truth that ran through them, a little silver glimmer of irrefutable fact. A warning, perhaps, such as she saw in Leago's cold smile as he looks at the pair of horned giants at his table.
"Lookin' for a friend of a friend, and passing through, by and large," The smile she levels back at Leago is, by contrast to his, warm, inviting... perhaps a little infernal, if looked too closely upon. And her answer, she hoped was true enough for him to take as fact; and it was true, Shaa's friend was missing, and Izzy had promised to help him find this Athena person. Leago didn't need to know names, though. "Me? I'm a private investigator. Getting information is kind of my job, and there seems to be a fair bit of that to be had here. Such as why did the whole thing with these... ah. Hell hounds, you called them? Make everything resurface three or so months ago? Why not sooner? If the legend has been around for some time, then people have doubtless been to the property before now. So what was different this time?" Izzy taps her chin thoughtfully, as she dangles upside down. "What do you think, Big Guy?"

Shaa rubbed his chin a bit as he considered the story. At least there were some things that were starting to make sense. Whenever easy money was an option, mercs like these were never very far behind. Ghost stories and monsters were a good way to keep away the curious while the more adventurous types went after the treasure. But the real question was, we’re there actually creatures running around up there? The guys from earlier certainly thought so and something was making all that noise. The only way to know for themselves would be to go check it out.
On the other hand, there wasn’t an actual commission attached to this. Was there any real reason that he shouldn’t just turn around right now and head on home ( other than not wanting to get back to the paperwork waiting for him, blerg) This should be a super easy call. This place was crawling with fighters, some hell hounds shouldn’t be an issue for fighters if this caliber. Wait a minute……THIS PLACE WAS CRAWLING WITH MERCENARIES! With so many fighters, why were they wasting time hanging out in a tent when they could all go up, kill the hounds right now, collect the treasure and call it a day. It didn’t add up. There was treasure, right there for the taking and all these mercs are not preparing to leave, they are just waiting.
Shaa braces Izzy a bit so she doesn’t fall and leans in a bit closer. That’s a nice story. Love, treasure, betrayal. But…I really don’t care about any of that. I’m just here for the monsters. I say we head up there right now and put the fire puppies down. If there happens to be anything else up there..well….finders keepers. I am curious however..you all look like you have been here awhile. Why haven’t a group of big strong fighters already gone and taken care of it..unless….you have already gone. Already gone and found something you couldn’t quite handle. Now your just hanging around seeing if someone can do your dirty work for you. Is that what you are. Bunch of scavengers looking for scraps. Leago’s face went slack. You don’t understand… No I understand just fine. You can wave your decorative swords and monogrammed towels as much as you want. You were here for easy money and bit off more than you could chew. Maybe…whoever summoned them in the first place. No greedy farmer I would imagine. Leago stands up from the table abruptly. Shaa had apparently hit a nerve. WHO THE HELL IS UP THERE LEAGO?! The half Orc, still standing, picks up a mug from the table and takes a takes a long pull. He holds the mug out a bit and swirls the liquid around, staring absently at the tiny whirlpool forming in his mug. Why don’t you…find out for yourselves, if you are so smart.
Shaa looks up at Izzy. Maybe we should….maybe we willl

Izzy wobbles a little as Shaa leans forward, kept from tumbling by the broad span of his large hand as he holds her still. Quickly regaining her composure, she resumes the faux-swoon across his shoulders while he handled things.
And then some. Izzy actually lifts her head to look at Shaa, impressed, as he comes to a conclusion about the group of mercenaries that she had suspected as a possibility, but had not yet pinpointed as a likely reason. Yet, Shaa had cut right through the bullshit, his years of experience with exactly this sort of person, these sorts of people, lending to him far more strongly than her own careful information gathering had within only a few minutes of interacting.
Her expression brightens further, especially as the half-orc stands up. Shaa never failed to dazzle. And with all eyes on him, it was all too easy so ooze off his shoulder to the ground behind him, in order to subtlely don a mask[1].
As Shaa looked up at her, Izzy was standing now at his side suddenly, her head bowed so the group couldn't quite see her face, as though she were inspecting the floor. "I think that's a grand idea. Better us to resolve it since these folks seem... incapable. Shame, though."
"Now just a--" one of the men at the table starts to speak up, beginning to rise-- and immediately falls back into his chair with a yelp of terror as Izzy's head snaps up towards him.
Her visage, wreathed by her halo of crimson curls, is of a skull in the midst of charring, fanged, cackling, mad. The stuff of nightmares, striking fear into the group who looked upon her. Now a demon in all but name, she chuckles, a low, throaty sound, as the group at the table scooches back and away from her almost in unison. "I thought people like yourselves were smarter than to play with fire. Such is the way of things, I suppose. Consider this your warning, then. This is no longer your domain."
She slides one talon along the surface of the table, leaving a deep gouge. Her flickering eyes dance with hellfire, and her unnaturally wide grin stretches.
"See you around. Friend."
And that was a threat if ever there was one.
She turns to Shaa, chipper despite the terrible visage she now wore. "Come on, Big Guy! We got some work to do."

And now, it was a threat.
