A long time have passed since she had last been to the Sol City, and the memory was still bittersweet. Kamille had met with Amílcar there, danced at the ball, and now... he was nowhere to be found. The Witch sighed, resigned with a sweet memory of the past, and the absence of the present. Kamille had hoped this would be an opportunity to find him, since this was a job requested by the guild, of which both of them belonged. But her hopes were quickly squashed as she learned she was to take on this quest alone.
Luckly, travel became much less of an issue once Kalaf agreed to travel with her. The drake couldn't land inside the academy grounds, but still it was much faster than traveling by boat or feet. And... it came as a surprise to her how much she enjoyed the flight. The cold didn't bother her, not for a long time already, and the feeling of freedom and detachment while guided by Kalaf's wings was... something she had never experienced.
Felt like there were things about herself she was yet to discover.
With Kalaf left behind in a small cave away from the main buildings, Kamille made her way to Arcane Academy. Once again. Early morning saw her walking the academy grounds while most were still gathering the strength to start their day, their mind still covered in a sleepy fog. Even so, here and there she noticed a glance of recognition, a few whispers and some excited gasps. Kamille was, as always, easily recognizable by the black feathers of her attire and the cawing raven on her shoulder, but she should have expected this would happen. The Witch had been recently attending Court meetings once again - even if this time it was Moonglade's Court. But she was not an apprentice shadowing an older mage anymore, and attended the meetings with her own interests in mind.
By the time she arrived at the library, she was already eager to go find what she was looking for and leave as fast as possible. Kamille approached the person that seemed to be the responsible one for the library.
"Good morning. Do you have something on the Sigil of the Black Sun?"

The day from the time Minora had walked into the library to set everything up, had been somewhat of a strange day. More people had come in then regularly come in, some seeking the same items “Dangers of aquatic plants” and “Advanced dangers of mighty invocation magics”. Probably one of the professors was doing some tests and had their students run for information on the subjects. After her morning rush Minora had time to rest, making herself some tea. She sat down and began reading her own book as an iron lantern consisting of a red and black flame zoomed around the library before coming back to where Minora rested.
“I switched all the C books with K books!”
Minora looked up from her book and sighed heavily before wondering if she could get some kinda refund for her companion, as she closed her book she spied someone she had not seen for a long while Kamille herself. She wasn’t that hard to point out of a crowd, just look to where the heads are turning and you’ll find her. Minora curtsied and spoke with a small smile on her face.
“Lady Kamille it’s so wonderful to see you again, we met at a party a few months back. It’s okay if you don’t recall, uhh Sigil of the Black Sun?”
Minora thought for a moment her memory was very good and she was trying to recall the book just in case she didn’t have a volume, not like something like that happened often but you never know. Minora’s eyes flashed purple and just moments went by before a black and gold tome flew from on of the shelves and landed lightly on the desk in front of her.
“Yes, I have one in stock. Ah, I know this one it’s of an Ashen Count from before the families made him a figurehead, though not by long if I recall correctly. What are you looking for? Most likely anything of value he would have would be in the possession of the families.”

With her head down as she was, Kamille was surprised to raise her eyes and realise she knew the person in front of her. Of course she remembered Minora! She might have been drunk when she met her, but... not that drunk! The Witch smiled at the other woman.
"Minora! Of course I remember you! How you've been? I shouldn't be surprised... Now I recall that you mentioned you worked at the library. How you've been since the ball?"
"CAWWW! My name is Mischief!"
As Minora brought in the book she had asked, Kamille shifted her focus to it. Despite not having attended the Academy personally, Kamille was a studious one, with the mannerisms and tics of someone who spent much time over great tomes of magic, granting them the respect they earned.
"Yes, that is the basic story everyone tells...... The Guild has told me they have enough to believe that there is a certain artifact that was buried with him, though. Some sources disagree on where he was buried, and while some say he was buried on the crypts dedicated to the Counts and noble families of the Ashlands, others say he had a mausoleum of his own on the family grounds... I need to set this information straight."
She turned the pages with the practice of someone who knew what she was doing, but something else tug at the back of her mind for a moment. Minora had felt very unhappy and dissapointed with herself when they first met, and although Kamille couldn't know if that was a conclusion her drunken self had drawn, it wouldn't take much to know the truth...
Kamille raised her eyes to Minora for a moment.
"How you've been hanging? Do you like this job?"

“Me? Well I finally got to leave the city and head to the moonglade, though i haven’t done too much since then. I do enjoy this job, I wish to test my abilities on more than just flying books around. I’m getting stronger without trying, I long for an adventure. That would be grand, unfortunately I can't just leave, who would organize the books, that old fossil?”
She nudged her head showing an old man sleeping in the corner, he had a bushy, long gray beard, he was starting to go bald dressed in a gray and blue robe. Minora stared at the old man. If she could she’d singe his beard but that would be impolite, also could get her fired plus in trouble with the school. She folded her arms and stared at the book that interested Kamille enough to come to the world's worst place to work.
From the elders who come in and treat her like a thing to fetch them tea or “oh Minora be a dear and smash this spider.” “Minora be a dear and pick up my quill I dropped it upon the floor.” The students who come in and act like somehow their time is so important. This library has over 2000 books she memorized almost all of them, and can even recite passages given some time. Occasionally she forgets things or gets a quote wrong but she is only human.
As she had this debate within herself becoming more angry as she continued to think, steam began to emanate off of her, she felt malice grow and quickly regained her control, she shook her head and sighed. Making peace that it might be a cruddy job but it’s something for her to do for now till she can apply for the guild.
“I dislike this job if i’ll be honest with you, i love books but i love reading them far more than organizing them. Here I wait though, my letter for the mages guild must not have been received. I guess I'll start working on the 7th one.”

"I long for an adventure." There was a time when she was the one to utter such words, pestering old farts like her former Master to let her out. Eventually, she was trusted with some basic monster hunting around Sol City, even if always chaperoned. But she knew how frustrating it could be to not be trusted bt the elders, and how infuriating their concern could be, even if it was coming from a place of care. An eyebrow was raised as Minora literally steamed, but as much fury as she contained, she kept it under control. Maybe that was a good sign. Maybe she should be learning how to channel that properly before it started to eat at her from the inside. For a moment, Kamille forgot about the book before her, as she stared at the woman. I long for an adventure. She looked around and lowered her voice, bending over just a bit. " Minora..... Do you think these old farts could miss you for a day or two? I could really use some help with this thing right here, but.... It does not come without some danger..." But she knew that, specially with a referral from herself, it might as well be the opportunity for Minora to enter the Guild. If she could help her find this artifact, of course...
"But only if you want it, of course. I need to find this."
Kamille searched in her satchel for something, only to take out a torn and crumpled piece of paper that she flattened up to show Minora: It looked like a big medalion, golden, with a black sun painted on it.
"If you really wanted... I could steal you away from here and they couldn't say anything, you know? Not to me."
Who would dare raise their voices to the Witch of Moonglade, after all?

“Not such an old fart that I can’t hear…”
A gruff grizzled voice came from the old man sitting in the chair, his brown eyes looking at the two women, he got up and bowed slightly toward Kamille. He cleared his throat to make the proper introductions.
“Lady Kamille, it's an honor, I am Master Arcano. We have met once before but you were younger then. I see time has been very kind to you my dear, as you are more radiant than ever. Although I wish against it, I can't actually keep Minora here. She isn’t a prisoner even if she feels like she is… Very well Minora go collect your things and little friend and i will have a few words with Kamille.”
Minora in her excitement quickly grabbed the floating lamp that now hovered above her head and ran towards the back of the library, not in fear but the excitement poured off of her the whole room could feel her energy as she left it.
“She’s special you know, her psychic abilities are second to none, that i’ve seen but she keeps those emotions bottled up instead till now i see anger and depression, i keep her here for her safety and our own. Through our talks it’s clear these emotions formed into another personality, she’s still Minora but… I’ve only seen it once and honestly i would not like to see it again not for our safety only but her own, the pain that radiates from the other personality is… unsettling.”
It only took a few moments for Minora to return in travel gear and a satchel strapped to her side as the little lantern with a comically cute face follows behind her it’s flame was a normal color as it danced around Minora happily, like it’s waited for this moment almost as long as Minora has.
“Minora mind yourself out there and remember”
“Yes yes, the world isn’t black and white it’s gray even for me. You worry way too much, it's bad for your health, you know?”
Minora bowed to Arcano and than turned herself towards Kamille, her green eyes looking intensely towards the door as if freedom and adventure was just footsteps away, she longed to learn from Kamille and to prove herself as a mage and a companion, she just had to make sure not to lose control and stay herself.

Despite being caught talking bs about them, Kamille didn’t seem to have enough shame to muster to color her cheeks even slightly. Instead, she offered Master Arcano an understanding smile. Kamille herself never actually studied at the Arcane Academy, but it wasn’t uncommon for her to take a trip there to fetch some tome or talk to someone on her Master's command. There was an upside of being the Court Wizard's apprentice, after all, or at least that's how she tried to frame it.
The idea that Minora had, as the elder said, some kind of dissociation was something new to Kamille, and she was grateful she was warned about it beforehand. There must be a great amount of pain bottled up to build up into another personality. Was Minora more than she could handle? She honestly hoped she could help the young woman, her excitement was contagious. And Kamille wouldn’t deny Minora reminder a bit of herself.
"I understand your concerns, Master Arcano. And I thank you for your warnings, I'll see what I can do about that.... If there is something to be done. Do you know what happens when you open the door of a house that's on fire?"
Why was she remembering that now? There wasn’t much time for her to answer, since Minora was already back. Kamille smiled at her, grabbing the book she had gotten for her to look at.
"Would you mind if I took this? I guess we'll need it. I'll bring it back later."
Kamille guided Minora out of the library, for a moment putting the book away. Once they were out in the gardens, Kamille turned to Minora.
"I guess I didn’t tell you much about my quest. The Guild is after this Sigil of the Black Sun, that belonged to one ancient Count of the Ashlands. Depending on how this goes, I'm quite sure Sor'Adien might be pleased to have a talented young mage such as yourself on the guild. Have you ever been out on your own before? And.... for the moment, more importantly...... Did you ride a dragon already?"

Walking with Kamille Minora felt like a whole new woman. She felt like she was actually going to make use of her tablets not just her mind but an ability to taste her magic, moving books though doesn’t count. She didn’t really see the moving of objects with her mind as real magic, just something she’s able to do. It took a few moments for Minora to actually leave past the front door of the library, once she took that step through the doorway there was no way of going back.
She turned back and to her eyes the library was empty and dark with a woman standing in the center, her appearance the same as Minora save for her black and red hair like a corrupted fire and bright pupiless red eyes. She trailed her fingers over the desk and looked at Minora.
“Second thoughts? Too late for those. I want to be free of this place. I want to run wild… Let me have a little more control. You get to impress Kamille and I get to hurt something, I call that a win-win.”
“Hurt something or someone? You wouldn’t do the right thing, you would do whatever you fancy without rhyme or reason.”
“Who do you think you are speaking to in that manner?! We have survived because of me! Remember it’s you who got us kicked from the house and our inheritance, you turned your brother…”
“Enough!”
Minora shook her head violently shaking away her thoughts and the voices that plagued her mind and stepped over the doorway and towards Kamille breathing a heavy sigh than smiling trying to keep up the appearance of her usual demeanor, the sound of Kamille saying she would be a part of the mages guild her heart soared something she’s been working toward getting into the guild. She wanted to be a part of the guild for so long but she never found anyone to teach her and at her current level she felt like she wouldn’t hold a candle to the others. The voice played inside her head instead of anger. It was as overjoyed as she was.
“Did you hear that useless!? Us in the mage’s guild! Let me loose, come on! Let me help you, i’ll be good…Wait did she say something about a dragon?”
Minora stopped staring off into space and then looked up at Kamille hearing the question but almost not understanding it, like riding a dragon was something she should have done at an early age.
“No, can’t say i’ve ever ridden a dragon before and as for traveling uhh i went to moonglade one time and uhh i guess that’s really it my parents never took us traveling, so Sol City has been the only location i’ve really been too.”

While she noticed there seemed to be a hint of hesitation on Minora's demeanor, she had no way of knowing of what was on her head, at least for now. But ever the patient one, she wouldn’t rush things. One step at a time.
Kamille would have to have a different approach to Minora than she had to Sarris, she wondered. Sarris, despite being constantly watched by Young Lord Sarne, would often have enough freedom to sneak around and do as she pleased from time to time. It felt as if Minora was much more restrained than that, specially by the way she was happy to accept her invitation so quickly. And while she didn’t want to start that relationship with a boring monologue, maybe Minora was due to some awakening.
"The world isn’t black and white, huh? That is true...... But that is easy enough to perceive, don’t you think? You know something that some people fail to realize? What comes hand in hand with freedom? What is the other aide of this coin?"
As they talked and walked down the halls, Kamille would lead Minora to the Academy's garden, that seemed a bit more lively than it usually was at that time of the day. Even before Minora could answer, a loud roar cut through the air, shaking the glass of the windows. As if to answer Minora's question, as they turned to exit to the gardens, the young mage would see a rather distinguished visitor lounging about the expanse of soft grass of the Academy: with black scales as polished as thousands of black mirrors, the drake stood for once at the might of his full height to roar at some student that had finally pierced through his shield of endless patience. Since he had arrived, the younger students had been trying to touch his wings and tail while he was asleep, and while the dragon was fairly patient, they were finally able to anger the old gentleman. The roar seemed to disperse the students like flies, suddenly leaving the garden more or less desert. He turned his gaze to both of the women, his luminescent scarlet eyes seemingly carrying the weight of several thousands of years. A small line of smoke rose from his nostrils as he glared at them.
"Minora, this is Kalaf. He is a friend of mine that I met at the Ashlands. Did you eat a student yet, Kalaf?"
The dragon growled softly at the remark, shaking his head and arching his back in a stretch, not unlike a cat would. Except this little cat was covered in scales, spikes and claws. Kamille chuckled.
"They are not hatchlings, they are people. Grown ups. Young, but still."
Kamille seemed to understand what the dragon was saying, even if for most it would look like a series of low growlings.

“To tell you the truth, I'm not sure. A long time ago an old witch told me, my freedom trail will be a long road to my apocalypse. Still don’t understand what she meant by that, i’m not sure what happens on the other side of the coin. Whatever it is… I want to learn how to deal with it to see what others can not. How do you see the world, Lady Kamille? If gray is a simple way to see the world, teach me how you see it.”
Minora continued to walk beside Kamille taking in the fact she wouldn’t have to see these school walls and rooms for a long period of time she hoped, if she was to be a part of the mage’s guild she would need to be better to change how she thought more than she already has, before working in the library she saw the world has black and white, if someone was bad they were bad forever and the same could be said of good people.
Master Arcano began teaching her that even bad people are capable of good and good people are capable of such destruction, so if the world is not black and white and gray is too simple to think of the world then she was lost as to what she could perceive the world as. Before Minora could press more questions a loud roar echoed through the gardens and immediately the source was seen a large black dragon. Minora eyes filled with wonder as she ran towards the dragon, stopping a safe distance away so as not to scare it or get eaten by it.
“This is amazing. I've only read about dragons in books. I can't believe you actually ride one, though it’s probably faster than walking. Here I have a friend for you to meet Kalaf…”
Minora went rotting around in her travel bag to pull out an unlit black iron lantern, along the cage house gothic designs. The wick lighted itself and grew till the lantern began floating on it’s own as the flame grew large enough to house a small cute face.
“Kalaf met Lucidum, my little helper.”
“Ahhh big scary dragon Master defensive mode i shall protect you!”
The little lantern began to bump itself softly along the stomach of the dragon making noises as if it was actually doing damage to the dragon. Minora placed her head in her hand and shook her head probably more embarrassed now than she’d ever been in her life.
“I am so sorry about him.”

Kamille chuckled softly as Minora took out her lantern friend, that immediately started to bump against Kalaf's scaly stomach. The dragon looked much more amused than annoyed, as if he was barely feeling a thing.
"Lucidum will probably hate Mischief... Or the other way around."
The raven was still on top of her shoulder, unusually silent for the moment, tilting its head at the weird lantern and strange woman. He recorded seeing this woman before, during the ball, so he was probably scouring his memory for her name. Kamille approached Kalaf, who promptly lowered his snout to her level, appreciating a gesture of affection.
"Responsability. That's what's at the other side of freedom."
Kamille picked up their conversation where they left it before being interrupted by their companions. While she had few information on Minora's past, she had a feeling she was a troubled young woman - and a prophecy by an old witch wouldn't do much to make it better.
"Freedom means being able to make your own choices, live your own life, trail your own path......... And pay the price for it. There is no one else to blame for anything you do but you. No past, no person, no circumstance. Only you. Everything comes at a price. Or a consequence, if you will. And when you're free - truly free - the consequences are dropped on your shoulders, and your shoulders alone. It is no wonder some people learn to love their shackles, for there are those who would buckle under the weigh of their own actions, knowing they have their life in their hands. With that in mind, I ask you once again."
Kalaf lowered a bit more, helping her hoist herself up the back of the dragon. The Witch, clawed hands and eyes bright with promises, extended her hand to help her up.
"So, I'll ask you one last time. Is this what you really want?"

The world became black once more and instead of Kamille on top of the dragon it was the other side of Minora staring at her.
“What's she on about anyway?”
“I think she’s saying that even if we are two sides of the same person we are both Minora, we are responsible for our actions while chasing our freedom… You like making deals so here’s one, i’ll let you out and listen to you more. You can even speak with Kamille if you like, in return work together with me and we can be something great. You can stay no more arguing for now at least.”
“We are weaker apart, Deal. No more interruptions, I'll merely speak to you in your thoughts instead of dragging you here. Besides, I think Kamille is starting to suspect that there might be two of us in this big head of yours.”
“Was that a compliment or an insult?”
“Yes.”
Like that in a snap the world returned to it’s natural colors with Minora staring up her emerald eyes looking into Kamille’s blue ones as she quickly took her hand and hoisted herself up on top of the large dragon before grabbing Lucidum and placing it back into her travel bag. She took a deep breath and suddenly the fear of how fast this dragon goes started to creep into her mind plus the sheer force at which it’ll travel would knock her off in a moment, she’ll fall and at that height and the force at which she would be thrown only caused her to think of the splatter she’d make on the ground.
“Uhh Lady Kamille, is this safe? I mean no one's fallen from Kalaf right?”

"Of course it's not safe!"
Kamille playfully chuckled as she grabbed Minora's hand and helped hoist her up the dragon. There was no saddle, but there was a spot in Kalaf's back that didn't seem to have much protruding spikes, which made it for a good spot for them to mount.
"I wouldn't know that.... Actually.... Kalaf, have someone already traveled with you like this before me? Have someone already ridden you?"
The dragon snorted with a puff of smoke, moving his head from one side to the other.
"Looks like we're Kalaf's first riders. Hold on."
Despite saying so, Kamille had clearly flown with Kalaf before, so she seemed already pretty confident when he stretched his wings and prepared for his leap. Kamille quickly put Minora's hands around her own torso so she could hold on, while she grabbed on a few spikes before her. The taking off was the worst part of it, as she pressed her legs around his back spikes for some more grounding, as well as firmly held onto his spikes ahead of her. The force with which he jumped forward towards the sky could be enough to have them thrown back if they didn't hold onto properly.
The giant leathery wings by their sides flapped on the command of powerful muscles beneath his obsidian scales. In a matter of moments, they took the skies; and while the first feeling of leaving one's gut on the ground was somewhat unsettling as Kalaf made his ascending movement towards the sky, once he leveled to assume a more calm pace, they were able to catch their breath.
Up there it was colder, but between the Pyromancer's warm aura and the fiery drake beneath them, it was hard to notice it. The wind washed away their worries and entered their lungs with a renewed chill that might have felt odd at first. Their hair whipped back, and once they were able to take a deep breath once again, it was clear it was not their guts that was left on the ground: it was their fears.
Kamille straightened up once Kalaf leveled on the horizon, turning to his homeland once again. She would want to take the time to talk about this whole mission with Minora on their way, since it felt like the perfect opportunity.
"So... About the Sigil of the Black Sun... Apparently what's out there is that the Sigil remained in the family, but...... It's not? No one can be sure if it was, at some point, actually in the family. The latest news is that it may have been buried with him. This is why I was after his burial site, which, strangely enough, is not his family's ancestral site of burial. Feels like he was disowned and didn't deserve to be buried alongside his family. I wonder why...."

“This might be a bit easier…”
The voice echoed inside of kamillie’s mind. Minora’s voice was as distant with a hint of an accent as her normal voice.
“I can send messages to people's minds and for a brief time I can hear them too if they allow it. Sorry if this is a bit weird, i just felt this was better than yelling over the wind and all. Anyway… Strange if he was disowned than why let him keep a family seal? Such an important moniker of the family. Why would He keep it? Maybe the split wasn’t on both sides… The family would have retrieved it by now… Maybe something with the sigil itself? Too many questions and no leads… Unless you have somewhere to start?”
Minora held on to Kamille as her eyes gave off a purple hue almost like she was in a trance as she focused in on sending a message, truth be told this distracted her that if she fell then she had no way to stop her descent safely. She’s too heavy to keep up with her telekinesis, using fire won’t do anything and she can’t move ground high enough nor make it soft for her landing. Even as her mental voice spoke to kamille the same indecision and second guessing could be heard in her voice. All this was a simple way that her brain distracted her from uncomfortable situations.
The majesty of riding on a dragon, the feel of it’s scales along her hands that it is a living breathing being with it’s own personality, an old being that allowed someone to use it for a ride. Minora would just read about them in books about how evil they were but that was just the story books in truth dragons were just as complicated as humans can be. Each breath it took made Minora feel a little calmer like she wouldn’t fall, still all she could think about was going splat on the ground below no matter how much she tried to reason it away. So she tried moving the topic to something still along with the mission.
“Are we going right to where the book said his burial site is or are we going to start by talking to the family and see if they will tell two strangers their family story? Maybe?”

Kamille chuckled, as her voice echoed in Minora's mind back to her.
I know the Message spell too. No need to worry.
There was no other experience that felt more like freedom than flying, even if Kamille was the first one to assume the experience was very new and intimidating to her at first. It helped the fact that she and Kalaf bonded fairly quickly, both of them creatures of the earth and fire, roots dug deep on the land but wings strong enough to the skies.
A travel that would normally take weeks was bound to take hours on dragon back, even less if the wind was kind to them.
I will want to avoid meeting the royalty of the Ashlands for the moment being. And I doubt they would give us willingly more information than we already have.
There was also the added factor she was allied with the son of an Ashen Father, but that was a talk for much, much later....
I'm guessing "let him keep it" is a strong expression... We're not even sure about what it does, to be honest. That’s one of the reasons the Guild is interested in the Sigil. So as much as we can work without the involvement of the family, the better......
It's been a long time since she last held entire, long conversations without uttering a word. Minora was good company, a fellow mage and eager to learn. It was going to be more pleasant than she assumed.
