It was to be a joint operation between the military and the city guard to promote cohesion between the two different means of protection for Eclipse City. Cooperative training, they had apparently called it, Sable's captain quoting it directly from the notes they had taken themselves once they had all gathered for their own debriefing. It had been immediately followed by a chorus of groans that expressed both displeasure and disbelief that what would come of it would actually live up to the... vision of the higher-ups.
Sable had been... neutral, himself. He had no issue with the military, the organization, or the people within its ranks, but he was not blind to the tension that spanned between the two. Those that were within the military looked down on those who served in the guard, citing a number of reasons that stemmed from the belief that they were unwilling to put their lives on the line to protect the citizenry, preferring instead the safety of remaining behind the city walls. Something that was made obvious by remarks said just a touch too loudly—or pointedly when they were overconfident and outnumbered those they made their comments towards—leading to those within the city guard resenting the military for the air of superiority they toted around and tried to force upon them.
A problem without a solution, it seemed, and this was only the most recent of several failed attempts to remedy the... animosity between the two. Not that he was counting it as a failure yet, and he would certainly do his best to perform and work with the military admirably, but he wasn't deaf to the way more than a few guardsmen and guardswomen spoke of wanting nothing to do with this training, deciding already to do the bear minimum or simply leave with the first cutting words that came their way from the soldiers and scouts.
His only hope was that it wouldn't come to blows as it had several years ago. The court martialling that followed the incident along with the grueling shifts meant to serve as a punishment to the rest was still a vivid memory for him, one that refused to fall away as he stood within the jungle, waiting like many others for one of the officers to finally divvy them up into their assigned teams and explain what their goal was for the day.
