Without her disproportionate strength, Astrid would not survive the ball with this costume. Luckily, she made it maneuverable enough to eat, drink, and take her helmet off to see and have conversations. She tried to use the lightest metals she could find, but light and sturdy metals aren't cheap. In fact, metal at all isn't cheap, and the amount of metals she needed for this costume certainly was not cheap. With Charles' help, she navigates the ball to a decent extent, finally finding an empty bench without a back for her to rest her weary feet. The nannybot walks behind her and lifts on the wings to alleviate the weight and give her a break while she has a bite to eat.
Eventually, she spots a face she recognizes in the crowd. A familiar red tiefling! It's been ages since she saw him, so she calls out. "Mister Cantio! Hi! Hey!" Luckily the half-dwarf in the bird costume is hard to miss. With each wave of her arm, metal clinks together. "Long time no see!"

Was someone calling his name?
Amongst the crowd, a red tiefling with a wine glass resting between his fingers, nestled in the palm of his hand, looks about with a mild befuddlement over the sound of— maybe— his name. There’s a soft murmur where he is— people talking with one another, mingling— the violin sings high over the people in a crescendo as the current sonata reaches its climax. After a moment of glancing about, his eyes settle quizzically on a tiny knight sitting on a bench.
She’s waving wildly at him, her costume adding to the… wait a second, that’s not just a tiny knight!
A pleased gasp crosses Cantio’s lips as his half-buzzed brain makes the connection; one hand rises to his mouth to hide a smile; before he raises it to wave back. It takes the tiefling little time to navigate through the crowd, heading towards the little half-dwarf with bright eyes. “Miss Astrid! My goodness, look at you!” he greets, his skirts swaying about his ankles as he stops in front of her with a warm smile. The tiefling, himself, is certainly decked out for the ball; looking more like a princess than anything else.
“Your costume is…”
How does he describe it?
“So elaborate! And very shiny; don’t tell me you made this yourself? It looks wonderful. How have you been, Astrid? I didn't expect to see you here! But I'm very glad to.”
He sweeps himself into the seat beside her, wine glass in hand as he crosses one leg over the other, and finally notices the bot hovering nearby. It looks a lot like… “Oh— and who’s your friend?”
Is Veliky here? Did Astrid come with her?

Astrid grins up at the red tiefling as he approaches. "My costume is elaborate?" she laughs. "You look awesome! I don't s'pose I ever imagined ya as a princess, but yer pullin' it off really well!" The armored girl sets her plate to the side, stacking it amongst at least four other plates then she stands up. Each movement clanks loudly, and once she's standing, she does a shuffling spin (an actual spin might cause her to tip over). "I did make it! It's not all that practical, and there's lot of weird stuff I hid, but I worked really hard on it cause I wanted ta make an impression!" She immediately begins to jabber about all the intricacies of the mechanics, designs she tested, and laughs anxiously about the cost. It's evident she maybe didn't eat full meals for a few days to make this happen.
"Who's my friend?" Astrid's pulled out of her rambling, and she follows Cantio's gaze towards Charles. "Oh, that's Charles! He's my personal Pawn bot! Ya remember when I first met ya, and Miss Veliky had a new prototype she was testin'? Charles is like that but new and improved and programmed just fer me! Charles, introduce yerself! This is Cantio von Lumen!" Astrid waves the BlixtbotTM over to the conversation.
Seeing that he's addressed, the metal humanoid turns its head mechanically to observe the situation before speaking. "Conscript von Lumen, greeting: Pleasure to make your acquaintance. I am a Type-I Pawn Model BlixtbotTM known as C.H.A.R.L.E.S. Mistress Veliky constructed me in order to keep watch over Mistress Astrid. I am a specially made Chasing and Herding Astrid Reactionary Legionnaire Encumbrance Specialization unit."
Astrid has a big grin on her face then some of that introduction actually processes, and she looks confused.

Cantio laughs softly as Astrid makes a remark about his costume; and, as usual, the tiefling decides to be a bit extra. He gives a twirl. His skirts billow out with the motion, and he holds the edges of his cloak when he stops, as if he were curtsying to her. “Well, thank you.” he chuckles, “I was a little worried it might not look well, but I've gotten a few compliments on it so far.” He lowers his arms, smiling fondly as he watches Astrid do her little shuffle to show off her outfit… he looks behind her briefly, noting the piles of dishes.
Boy, she… sure has a lot, doesn’t she? Did she eat all of that herself?
He looks back at the child as she continues to clank around, a smile returning to his face. “That’s incredibly impressive.” he remarks, watching the way her armour moves as she shows it off and explains all of the designs she tried out and tested. He has no idea what she’s talking about, which makes it all the more impressive, honestly. “That sounds like a lot of work! I hope you still, y’know…. Made sure to sleep and eat and such while you did all this work?” He looks quizzically at her, then looks towards the bot as she looks to it. “Charles?” he repeats, chuckling slightly over the name.
“I see…” He raises his palm to his chin thoughtfully; although, her announcement that Veliky was the one who gave it to her… is a bit unexpected… “Veliky gave it to you?” he asks— but Charles is already speaking. Cantio looks back at him, tail swishing slightly; habit kicks in, and he smiles back at the Blixtbot™, even though he’s pretty sure it doesn’t care. “Thank you, Charles— It’s nice to meet you too…” Cantio seems to let the meaning of his name sink in equally as slowly, and once it processes, he furrows his brows beneath the mask.
He clears his throat to hide a slight laugh; he didn’t realize Veliky even had a sense of humour!
“That is amazing!” he praises, clapping his hands together to draw attention away from Charles’ full name. “I know how much you enjoyed Veliky’s constructs when we were back in Dragon Cradle— it’s nice to see you with one of your own! Very fitting! Have you and Charles been getting along well, then? How has it been having him around?”

"Weeeeellllll," Astrid begins. "I wouldn't say 'gave' him ta me. More like a prize fer completin' a task. At least, that's what she said about it. He's been fun. Listens ta everythin' I've got ta say, carries me when I'm gettin' tired, carries all me stuff. It's awesome! I've always got someone around ta listen when I need ta rant or run my ideas past someone. He can even run a few calculations, which is helpful so I don't hafta go learn a bunch of extra arithmatic."
She goes on to tell the lengthy tale of her journey through the Lightning Fields with a fiesty rabbitaur and "some regular lookin' guy who is absolutely freakin' incredible with Sky magic!" She goes into great detail about their adventures and the dangers and how she got literally struck by lightning and somehow figured out how to use the cool magic the other two were throwing around.
To demonstrate, she holds her hands in front of her, palms facing, and little bits of electricity spark between them. Then she lifts up the helmet of her costume to proudly show Cantio the little arcs of electricity in the eyes. "It took me ages ta figure this out, and that's about all this can really do right now. On me next attempt, I'll do somethin' ta help me amplify the magic and send bad guys flyin'! ZZZZAP!" She laughs and sets the helmet down again.
"What about you? What've you been doin'? Still runnin' around makin' trouble? Rescuin' more kids from the streets?" The last sentence is an earnest jest, and she winks at him.

Cantio tilts his head as Astrid draws out her word, then breathes a soft laugh as she continues. “ Ah! She put you to work, then, didn’t she?” Yep, that sounds much more Veliky-like… although, he hopes whatever she had her doing wasn’t too terribly dangerous… He smiles as Astrid rattles about Charles; about what a good listener he is, and how he carries both her and her things, and something about math that he just sort of nods at. The princess listens happily to Astrid telling her lengthy tale; although his face does flicker to one of concern when she mentions that she journeyed through the Lightning Fields… but he’s relieved to know that she was joined by a talented company of other adventurers. Although, that guy she talks about sounds vaguely familiar to him… Doesn’t he know some guy with Sky Magic? Curious. Cantio’s expression turns from interest, to mild horror when Astrid says, very casually, that she was struck by lightning. “ You were struck by lightning!?” he stutters, golden eyes wide— but she’s fine! But heaven to Avasha above, she could’ve died! Still, he calms a little when she sets off electric sparks between her hands. His tail flicks back and forth anxiously, but he breathes a sheepish laugh. “ My goodness, you’ve been on some wild adventures, haven’t you?” he sighs; he feels tired just from hearing about her journey. “ But, that is amazing! I wish you... didn't have to get hit by lightning for that, but, I can’t wait to see you ZZZAP some bad guys!” The princess laughs cheerily, watching Astrid set her helmet down. “ Me?” he laughs softly, looking sheepish when she asks if he’s rescued more kids from the streets; he rolls his eyes. “ Well, no— but I am still causing trouble, yes.” he answers her question, poking his tongue at her between his teeth in a playful manner, before answering her question in seriousness. He leans his cheek against his open palm with a faint smile while he considers what he’s been up to since then. “Let’s see… I’ve played for a number of parties, big and small— in all kinds of different places— weddings, balls, galas, and casinos. I’ve been to the Ashlands, Zeinav, and I also traveled across the Lightning Fields recently, actually… with a couple of friends.” He looks a bit troubled as he considers that journey. “We were attacked by minotaurs, and all sorts of things out there… but, we made it to Frostgale fine, and I picked up some temporary work there… Awfully cold, that place… Ah— I invaded an auction with a friend of mine— some bandits stole something I was looking for, and I needed to get it back.” He breathes a little sigh.
“It was stressful, but… we got it in the end! And, I’m hoping to join the Arcane Academy with my findings, so I suppose we’ll see how that goes when I hear back from them.” The tiefling looks a tad sheepish as he mentions the last part.

Astrid nods along as she listens to Cantio tell her about his own adventures, interjecting with her own commentary. "Minotaurs in the Lightning Fields! We didn't run into those, but we did see these weird multi-legged salamander lookin' things! Tiny ones everywhere, and then the mama monster!" She explains that getting struck by lightning wasn't actually all that bad cause she made a friend during her travels who coughed up some armor that had some resistance to the lightning. She seems to literally mean "coughed up" but doesn't elaborate.
When he pokes his tongue out at her, she gives a goofy grin. Her legs swing under the bench while she enjoys his company and listens to his retelling of places he's been and seen and performed. She's never heard of the Arcane Academy though, so that piques her interest. "Arcane Academy? Ya like ta study, huh? What do ya need ta hear back from them about? Ya workin' on some sort of big project with magic? What's the Academy anyway?" She asks.
It occurs to her that she really doesn't know very much about Cantio or his abilities with magic, but she finds herself interested, especially since his magic seems tied to performance art. But she also just finds herself interested in Cantio himself. He's been nothing but kind to her since they met, and that's more than she can say about a lot of people.

Cantio seems surprised when she mentions the monsters that she faced in the Lightning Fields; a nervous, but polite smile remains on his face as she talks, but... at the end of the day, she's still here, right? He's grateful for the friends she'd made along the way, who'd helped her cross the fields. He nods along as Astrid explains something about her friend coughing up lightning resistant armour; he seems concerned, but smiles through it. Honestly, he's proud in a weird way; Astrid grins goofily at him while he jokes with her, and he smiles warmly in return while he continues his ramble.
She's come a long way, hasn't she?
She's all bright eyes; clothed in a glorious armoured fit she made herself; with multiple achievements stacked on her shoulders. Proud to relay her adventures, and all at such a young age...
He recalls Astrid from some months ago; lost and dirty on the street... at the store, tromping about in mismatched, ill-fitting clothes and goggles...
... and just look at her, now! How far she's come!
He chuckles to himself, fingers curling against his lips, as he looks back at Astrid fondly. She's asking about the Arcane Academy curiously; but she's bright and happy about it, and truly, he's glad to see her so. He laughs softly, "Well... I suppose studying it a necessary evil; I wouldn't say I like it, but.... the Academy is a place to study magic, which... I suppose I have some of. I didn't know about it until about a year ago." He smiles, crouching down in front of Astrid and extending his palm; an orb of light flickers, sparks like embers gathering around it; it warbles and shudders until the orb forms into a small songbird.
It tilts its head, chirping soundlessly as the bird hops to the edge of Cantio's fingertips.
"I use magic in my performances, sometimes; it makes things exciting." he admits, offering Astrid the ethereal bird to hold. "I don't know where it came from, or why, though... One day, I just noticed that the light was strange when I played my music... so I hoped the Arcane Academy might help me learn more about it. I'm waiting to hear back, to find out if they've accepted me into it."
He blinks, looking up at Astrid. "With your Lightning Magic, actually... maybe one day you might consider joining it, as well. If I'm ever to get in, I'd put in a good word for you."

Astrid seems surprised to hear that Cantio would suggest she study at the Academy as well. In fact, she seems unsure about it. She's not particularly well read though she can read. Books are expensive, and metal is expensive, and most of the time she chooses metal and meals over books. To learn by doing rather than reading is more her style, though she knows book learning has its place. It might even have its place for her learning magic.
"That might be fun. Maybe you and I can study together!" she suggests with a grin. Her eyes turn down to her hands. It seems they're fidgeting, the bits of metal on her gauntlets lightly clinking together. Why is she so nervous? Or maybe she's excited? There's extra energy there, she just can't place why. "So far, I've mostly learned things cause Mister Ulrich taught me a few of the basics while we were travelin'," she continues. "We were thinkin' I've got a bit of Sky magic since me last name's Stormstone and all. Makes plenty of sense ta me. I haven't had a chance ta really look into it much though. Been too focused on tryna make a name fer meself and make coin and make, well, this!" The armor-clad girl motions to her elaborate costume. "S'pose I always had an easier time learnin' by doin'. One time, me and Blue were trapped in a big sea monster, and I read a lot of books the sailors had on their ship tryna learn how we might get out. I know a lot about swim bladders and...um... boo-ee-ance-ee." She says all this to say she's not sure if she'd really fit in with a boook-learning crowd despite being genuinely interested in joining.

Uh-oh. Cantio’s polite smile doesn’t falter, but he recognizes the look in Astrid’s eyes far too well— not necessarily because he’s seen it on her before, but because he experiences it too much, himself. It’s a part of him he hides behind the mask, the bright colours, the flamboyancy, and the pretty smile. The way she looks at her hands, the way her fingers twitch, and the way she talks far too much… makes it sound like she’s anxious about the idea of the Arcane Academy. To be honest, so is he; he is not a mage, at the end of the day. He’s a musician. To say he frets and worries about not fitting in would most certainly be an understatement! He actually fully expects a rejection, which is, perhaps why he’s not worried about the Arcane Academy right now; that, and he got all of his anxious jitters out the first few nights he sent back his report. Cantio breathes a chuckle as Astrid gestures at her elaborate costume; although her next story takes him by surprise. He gawks when Astrid mentions being trapped in a big sea monster, then shuts his mouth with a couple of stunned blinks. “ I— goodness, well… I'm glad you're okay, but I guess I know who to go to if I ever need to know about swim bladders and buoya— boo-ee-ance-ee.” he chuckles softly, in good nature, then looks back at her. “It’s okay if you don’t want to right now, either, Astrid. It was just a suggestion!” he assures her with a soft laugh; and his smile is sympathetic, but warm. “You've got plenty of time to think about it; and if you do, you do. And if you’d rather practice magic on your own, that’s fine, too. I practiced mine by myself for a year; and Ulrich—” he stops suddenly. “Wait, you traveled with Ulrich?” He cocks his head, then shakes his head to get back on track.
“Ah, well… Anyways, Ulrich is a great teacher!” He nods to himself, “I’ve worked with Ulrich in the past, and he’s very talented at working with the sky domain… so, you’re in good hands with or without the Arcane Academy. Besides! If I get in, then I can teach you a few things I’ve learned next time I see you, and you’ll never have to pick up a book at all.” He winks playfully, “ And the Arcane Academy will never have to know you've been taught all their secrets.”

Astrid enjoys the conspiratorial nature of Cantio's suggestions. To learn the secrets of the Arcane Academy without ever attending herself, to learn one on one with someone willing to teach her? That sounds fun. She spent a not insignificant amount of time during her travels watching and imitating smiths from all around as they made even simple horseshoes. She quickly tried to jump right into making armor and failed enough to sit down and study the basics. Because of those experiences, she followed the approach of learning the basics first when it came to magic. She's only got bits and pieces, but bits and pieces that are good can make a masterpiece one day. She finds herself hoping Cantio gets into the Academy to pursue his studies and follow whatever dreams he has ahead of him. He seems really invested in it, and it draws her in too. Astrid always does find it more rewarding when others succeed too.
"Yeah, Mister Ulrich was a good teacher," she says nodding in agreement. "I thought he was gonna be kinda plain, but he was really awesome!" Long pause. "Wait, ya know Ulrich too?" She can't help laughing. "S'pose it makes sense fer a travelin' minstrel at a party ta know lotsa people, huh? I bet you could name half the people in this room and tell a story about each of 'em, couldn't ya?"

He turns his golden eyes towards the crowd, his skirts swaying with the motion of his body as he looks out.

He laughs softly, looking out amongst the crowd, “My favourite story?” he repeats, narrowing his golden eyes out at the sea of people; but then Astrid continues, grinning while she mentions the tea party. He grins back, “Well! We didn’t literally crash into the teaparty,” he answers, his tone bemused as he chuckles. "No flying ceramics, I'm afraid."
He clears his throat, clapping his hands together as he recounts the story.
“It was morning, in Sol City; I was out at the marketplace, when suddenly— a thief! His smile is warm at the memories. “Well, I was surprised, and so was she— but we got to talking, and it turns out we had a lot in common… but, she was much more mischievous than I could have ever bargained for. She suggested that we go and crash the teaparty of a lady, in the noble’s housing district… So we did!” He lowers his head, hushing his voice in a whisper, like it’s a secret. “We snuck in through the back garden, right into their kitchen, under their noses… and we mixed hot peppers into all of their snacks and drinks… switched the sugar to salt… and snuck right back out. It doesn't take long for Astrid to decide that she quite likes this story. The daring, the audacity! "Mister Cantiooooo," she sings through a conspiratorial grin. "I didn't take ya fer a prankster!" At this point, she's leaning in close, having a great time with the tielfing in the fancy dress. She's going to doodle this moment in her sketchbook later, she thinks. A memory to hold on to forever.
"That Kamille lady sounds like a real hoot! Will ya introduce me sometime? Maybe she'll take me out prankin' people! Maybe I can spook 'em with me horns." Astrid laughs again then drops her voice low to imitate an adult male as best she can. "Yer a real spooky demon child, ye are! Back! Away with ye, spawn of a devil!" Her voice returns to normal, and she makes claws with her hands. "And then I'll stalk towards 'em and scare 'em off with some of me new magic!" It sounds fun to her, honestly.
Then she starts up a story of her own. "One of me favorite pranks was this time one of the kids in Skypeak said they'd rather go on a date with a brick wall than this other kid. So I thought to meself, 'Well, that's certainly somethin' I can make happen!' So then I did! I found an old sheet and got a crate and some charcoal, I drew a face on the wall. I found a candle and everythin' and dragged 'em ta the alley and showed them their date with the brick wall! Only one of 'em thought it was funny." The rest of them? Not so much. Sure they called her names, said it was stupid, that she was stupid, but it was funny to her and the kid she played the prank on. That was all she wanted out of it.
