Sarris walked along the Alleyways of the shopping district. The merchants were hawking their wares and Sarris was trying to stay out of view of the thieves guild that ran the district. After her children had disrupted the pickpocket operation, she had been labeled a threat. She needed to come to buy a present for her Aunt’s birthday and some more fabric to sew clothing for the orphans.
Hand-me-downs were nice but not always warm.
As she walked she noticed a face that she had seen before, well, when she was a child.
She headed that way hoping to keep the thieves away.

It had been 4 months since Minora became a part of the mage’s guild in Sol City, she found it no different than the academy. Same brown noses and entitled morons just old wrinkled men and not her age. Even though her graduating class moved with her they all were positioned in different cities or jobs took them to amazing lands, because of her abilities and her photographic memory made her the prime mage to … watch over books. She’d read a small majority of the books in the library; there were so many that she’d have to live ten lifetimes to read them all, though the ones she was interested in were objects of power, old myths, psionic powers and the politics of the mage world. Those things told her nothing new, nothing that she didn’t already know. One book was missing though along with many scrolls with knowledge about old myths about magic and various magic practices that are ancient ,last taken out by High Mage Evia. She knew her old academy friend and one of the more wealthy noble houses, more than her family the Abies’. Also she happened to remember her being a stuck up spoiled brat, doubt she’d return the articles but something piqued her interest. Evia was smart, no denying that but in school she didn’t care for power, old legends or myths, so why was she keeping information on those subjects? The great library usually has old farts tending to it, guess their actual job is tardy book bounty hunters… What a lame job. Minora was just too curious though, guess she was book hunting, last known residence was Sol City off from the market. Big house can’t miss it.
A few hours later Minora walked around the market going into various stores but only looking, shifting her eyes staring at Evia’s estate. It certainly was… Modest, her eyes gazed at the castle-like exterior along with the large gate with armed guards and probably other ways mages protect their house. She noticed glyphs indicating a spell most likely an alarm, they can be broken without magic getting past those won’t be a problem but stealth wasn’t her strong suit. In her head she ran through 100s of scenarios standing there pretending to read a dusty old book she carried around with her.

As Sarris walked through the streets she too entered stores looking for the perfect gift to get her Aunt. She did not need clothes, they had a tailor. She did not wear a lot of Jewelry and what she did wear was very functional. She did need a sword or throwing knives. A cat or dog was right out of the question...
As she paced through one of the stores, Sarris noticed Minora acting like she was reading a book while watching something.
Minora was one of those really super smart girls that made Sarris feel like a tomboy. She heard that she had gone off to University to study. Her nose was normally in a book and she liked to talk about what she was reading. She might have an idea for a gift for her aunt.
Moving as quiet as a cat, Sarris moved. She approached Minora and when she got close she asked, "So what are you watching?" No hello. No nice to see you. No would you like help?
No point in giving up the annoying little girl persona. That was part of the joy of having Elven blood, she still looked like a young teenager. Prince popped his small head out of her pocket to take in the view.
Sarris walked around her after she had startled Minora. "You still have your nose in a book," she said in a teasing tone. "But the mage robes look good on you!" Sarris added.
Sarris leaned her riding broom against her shoulder. "I would not expect to see you down in the poorer end of town," Sarris continued. Her tone was not one of trying to be mean, but one of some concern. Mages normally had people that handled trivial things like shopping as they tended to be busy with other persuits.

Minora looked up from her book, almost annoyed that her surveillance was being interrupted. She was going to say something only to look upon Sarris, nice girl… half elf noble family ties, Sneaky. Being someone she knew even if it was through other people and at those stuffy parties, she had to keep up appearances.
“Hello Sarris, I’m not watching anything, just doing mage things… Now I'm very busy so if you don’t mind…”
Before finishing her sentence Minora stopped one word she thought played over in her mind SNEAKY, she had to face facts no way she was getting into a high mages house by herself she needed some help with the actual thief work. She also needed a fall person but not one connected to her so even if she did enlist Sarris’ help Minora couldn’t let her get caught it would just lead the guards to her.
“Hey Sarris, do you want to give me a hand with something? I’ll help you, maybe some magic lessons? Did your aunt send you shopping for something? Are you low on Solars?”
Sarris was a good kid, caring, has emotions and friends. Things she lacked, Sarris and Anoir would run around and play while usually Minora and Sarris’ cousin would have to talk and shake hands and perform like trained circus monkeys, showing that the noble houses are being headed by smart and graceful people.

Sarris rocked from her toes to her heal a couple time looking Minora in the eyes. Normally, Minora would have told her to go away in stronger terms or at least a threat.
Minora did not do petty things. Given a choice between goofing off and studying, she would study. So, Some something was up.
Sarris continued to play the young girl game, “It is not a boy! Since you did not blush when I startled you.” “So what would The Great Minora want with me? Need to turn some into a frog?” She asked
Crossing her arms, she said, “After the spicy horse reddish event, I want to know what before I agree to a price.”
Help with the gift, maybe a nice dinner. Putting a book in front Sarris sounded like torture.

“I told Aloin to tell you not to eat it, probably should talk to him about that one.”
Every so often Minora would look over at the estate, if she couldn’t enlist Sarris, getting those scrolls and books would basically be impossible for her. Through the rush of people in the market it was hard to keep track of the coming and going of people who enter the estate. She had been watching for at least a few hours and no one has left, only people she has seen are the two guards in plate mail out front but they almost seemed more like statues than actual people.
“No,men don’t interest me at this point. My friend who owns that house has been missing for a bit now and before they went missing she had taken some things from the library and never returned them. Unfortunately my job is to recover such things, knowledge should be for all with the temperance to control and learn from it.”
Great she started sounding like a mage, guess all that academy training brainwashes you a bit. She didn’t really want to lie but for her own lust for power she needed to keep what she was looking for a secret. She’d also like a little dirt on Evia if she could get it, anything to keep other mages in her back pocket.

Sarris laughed and took her by the arm as is the custom of young women. She took her to a food cart roasting meats, onions, and vegetables. “I am told that mage work is best done on a full stomach,” she said placing some coins on the cart to get something for the two of them. She took one of the skewers of meat and walked over to one of the street children and whispered something in her ear. The child was focused on the meat.. When she was done, the child took the food and took off running.
Sarris returned to Minora and gave her a wink. “We will have information about when the guards change and what is known about your friends house by dinner time,” Sarris said with some joy.
Sarris positioned herself some Minora could watch the estate without making a scene.
“I am guessing there are wards that will need to come down? I am going to guess they work on people going in but not out?” Sarris asked. She new little of wards and alarm spells. “I am guessing that the men in plate are golems of some form or really illusions,” Sarris said taking a guess.
“I am going to guess you can teach me how to break a ward? We will then retrieve the books…” Sarris said with an evil smile.

“Smart girl as always. The wards and alarms are of no concern, in fact I really don’t even need you to do much. I’m not good with locks nor am i very good at climbing, So i will see to the golems out front and teach you a little way around wards and magic traps. You climb up the house make your way in and simply unlock the door for me, whatever you want from the house is yours and i’ll even help you get it. I believe one of the spells she used was useful in the making of food out of nothing, well not nothing some materials would have to be gathered. I’m sure something like that would be useful for you and your friends. Anyway here is how you deal with magical wards, somewhere close to the focus point of protection will be a glyph.”
As she spoke out of a brown book sack she had which held the tome she was reading before she pulled out a piece of chalk and began drawing on the table a small symbol with intertwining lines. It seemed like a complex drawing but how she drew it made it simpler to redraw.
“Recreate that symbol next to the glyph and it’ll essentially allow you to enter that room without setting off the alarm, along with the following woods which should hopefully be easy Quaeila Tenmis it should be spoken with assurance and precise or you could end up…uhh evaporating upon entering said room. Don’t worry that’s only happened to like…7 or 8 mages. It's still kinda a new work around. We want to keep her glyphs intact or else she’ll know and well I'm sure she’s very busy with her research so I don't wish to disturb her.”
Placing the chalk down she continued eating her food, even keeping up appearances as she eat no matter how hungry she seemed. She ate in a polite way taking a bite, than wiping her mouth like she was brought up with manners and no other way.

Sarris listened and watched the explanation with some intrigue. Moria was a good teacher and Sarris understood bits and pieces of what she was saying. But Sarris was not a hermetic mage She fed Prince a bit of the meet from the stick. When Moria had completed her presentation Sarris looked at her and smiled. “Two questions, if I may. Will these wards detect animals trying to cross?” She asked this was her big question. “The second one is where would one disrupt the ward?” She asked. Every ward probably had a different command phrase but if a scratch through the sigel or chalk over a like could cause it to misfunction, that could be helpful.

“Animals? As long as they don’t go over a certain threshold of magic, say a familiar passes through a ward with poof and essentially sends them back till resummoned again. Normal animals should have no trouble, they themselves don’t set off wards cause then well you have to keep putting wards down and well they take time. Where you will be placing the symbol is actually quite easy, having your own magical ability you should be able to locate the wards glyph simply by focusing on the energy around you, sort of like how you cast a spell but without any words being spoken to actually use the spell. Anyway just locate it and draw this symbol over next to or really anywhere very close to the symbol, simplicity itself.”
She said placing the chalk back into her bag using a finder she lifted a few small pebbles occasionally throwing the pebble from an undiscovered location, every so often a little tap could be heard against the gate and house. The guards outside never reacted like they were made of solid stone though she didn’t feel any magic from them, if they were golems a certain amount of magic would be radiating off of them. Alas with the magic the house itself gives off with the wards all around it was hard for her to focus exactly what is giving off magical energy and what is not.
“Hmm Evia has always been pretty smart, she’s filled that house with things that would make it impossible to scry or for me to feel out what other obstacles could be in store. Other than the wards and those two guards I have no idea what she has put in that eyesore of a house of hers, so i say you go in, disable the glyphs and unlock the door, we go back in and both get exactly what we want.”

Sarris picked up Prince and said, “Here is who is going to open the gate for us!” She held the cat up with two hands and it gave Minora a “save me from the crazy lady look.”
“I am going to guess the stuff at the gate is intended to scare us and the stuff at the house will be much more lethal,” she said. “Leaving the guards standing will keep others away while we collect the books,” Sarris added still playing with Prince.
The cat meowed a few times and sneezed. “He is willing to walk the fence and jump on the gate handle,” She said. It meowed a few times and Sarris replied, “Five fried fish is too much for you at one time, how about two now and two later.” The cat meowed again and looked at Minora. “He wants your opinion on his being paid in fried fish,” Sarris asked Minora in a serious tone.
“He says if we could ask a squirrel to do it but it will cost us more,” Sarris said repeating his conversation with her.
Prince started to purr as Sarris petted him.
There was no magical bond between the two of them to be seen.

“So i’m trusting my future to a cat… Sure why not the kitty cat has a deal. If he does such a good job i’ll buy him all the fish his little kitten heart could ever want. Not squirrels… Little thieving bastards.”
She chuckled a bit thinking of the fact she hated squirrels calling them thieves and she was asking a cat to help her break into a house, though she had one final little test for the guards.
She placed some more solars down grabbing an empty bottle and grabbing a dark green cloak. She hunched herself over and began walking like she was drunk, messing her hair up and screwing with her makeup. Stumbling around she approached the guards no reaction from them she pretending to take a drink from the bottle and screamed about spiders and something else to sound crazy before throwing the bottle at the guards to those not magically inclined it looked as though the bottle missed the guards but before the bottle even reached the guard it evaporated. The guards however did not move nor did they speak, they were slightly moving though no actual reaction but subtle movements. She walked back into the crowd before popping up next to Sarris again fixing her hair.
“Not an illusion, not sure what type of magic this is. Can’t say i’m super studious in her use of magic or how she practices her type of magic. So sure send the cat in.”

“Wait! First it was book. Then it was books and scrolls. Now it is your future?” Sarris asked in a tone to make sure she understood what Minora was getting them into. “If we get caught both of our houses will pay for this,” she said.
“What type of magic was she studying?” Sarris asked in a serious tone.
The cat flopped down and meowed a couple times. “I am not saying that! But, yes investing in a bag of walnuts and having the squirrels test the fence might be a good plan,” Sarris said in a serious tone.
The street child came running up and told them when the patrols normally made their rounds. A servant woman went in once a week to clean and she had just come the day before. Sarris he’d up 5 fingers to the vender and paid for the skewers handing them to the child who ran off to eat.
Sarris headed off to test the fence with a squirrel. The squirrel did not explode or burst into flames. The ward made her hair want to stand on end as she approached it.
Now it was just time to wait for darkness

Idiot! She thought to herself why could she not keep her mouth shut sometimes? No matter, not like Sarris cares what happens in the mage world. She took a deep breath and continued to eat the meat placed in front of her every so often, staring at the house like she was analyzing it through and through.
“Well, Evia was always competent in magic that bends reality illusions a little more dangerous. Anyway the books and scrolls she borrowed contain myths and legends about certain artifacts that can be used to help bolster the potency of spells. Which is probably why the illusion is so damn convincing and she’s able to keep it up even if she isn’t in the city, she’d either be very exhausted seeing as we have been sitting here for a few hours and i haven’t once seen in wane or she has something helping her keep the spell up either way i don’t care about what she found i just need the books back. One information along those lines are dangerous for anyone one lone mage to hold on too, not to mention if a bandit or whatever finds one of these books. Two I could get in trouble if those books are just left out when they should be in the library for safe keeping. So you see it is a matter of job and future, getting caught isn’t a problem i’m good at talking with people.”
After her meal she turned around facing the house and in her hand three small rocks floated as she took out her old book and opened it, beginning to read it almost in a deep trance.
“We could be here for a while so I suggest finding something to keep yourself occupied.”

Sarris smiled as she said, “Things are always more complicated than they seem.” She shifted back in her bench slightly and tapped her chin with her finger for a moment. “You know I would help you anyway. It would improve my standing in the Silent Hand Guild and get me in trouble as It has not been approved. Only the senior members go after mage targets so this would be a feather in my cap,” she said.
She opened a blank book and wrote in Elvish, I was requested to help retrieve stolen books from Mage Evia for the Mage Guild’s Library on this day.
“If you you would be so kind as sign it. We will not be stealing but acting under authority,” she said with a wink. “This will cover both of us if we get stopped,” she added.
Sarris looked at Minora and asked, “Do you like robes with hoods or with out?”
When she got an answer she walked to her favorite store with fabric. She bought some heavy wool, two spools of heavy black thread, and a couple needles to sew with, and new scissors.
When she got back she went to work on sewing a winter mage robe for Minora. What she did not finish the House Fae would help her with. As long as everyone was sleeping.
When darkness fell and people thinned out Sarris looked at Minora and asked, “Are you ready?”
