Fighting off a whole pack of displacer beasts wasn't enough. There was still more trouble to be handled.
The heroes had rescued the merchants from the monsters in the marsh, yes, but they hadn't rescued all the merchants. That much was made very clear to Tatalia and Ulrich.
"We're all certainly grateful for everything you've done," said the merchant standing in front of Tatalia and Ulrich, "but we can't leave without Gunnar! The biggest of the beasts took him. He's a good friend, the very best of us, and-"
"And he has our money," a caravan hand said firmly, folding his arms over his chest. "We can't pay you unless you rescue the sot."
Tatalia pointed out that Gunnar was probably dead already if he was stolen away by a giant displacer beast. The merchant pled for aid nevertheless. Tatalia acquiesced.
Truth be told, it wouldn't have felt right to abandon the man to his fate. Mounting a rescue was really the only bearable action to Tatalia. Still, she managed to negotiate a little extra hazard pay out of the merchants, though only on the condition that she actually brought back their paymaster from whatever grisly fate he had in store.
Following the displacer beast's tracks wasn't particularly difficult, at least not for Tatalia.1 They were cunning and intelligent hunters, but Tatalia was sharp-eyed and wood-wise, well suited for the trials of the marsh. Few were those who could track down a monster better than the goblin.
Unfortunately, it was starting to get dark out. Tatalia had good eyes for night travels2, but as dusk began to loom overhead, the goblin looked worriedly over toward her companion.
"It's not going to get any brighter," Tatalia warned Ulrich as the pair paused on a patch of dry ground beneath a tree. The murky marshlands around them looked bleak and reddish-gray as the shadows of the trees loomed ever longer. Tatalia wiped mud off her pants before continuing. "These tracks are very fresh, so I'd wager we're maybe twenty minutes out from our prey. That means we'll be fighting with barely any sun, and the displacer beast will probably be in a cave with the merchant. If you don't have a light source, it might be hard for you to fight."

Ulrich followed his companion further into the marsh. The light had been quickly fading, and it was only going to get darker. This was definitely a cause for concern on Ulrich's part. He didn't have anything that would enable him to see better in the dark passively. Although there was one solution, and if they'd found themselves in a cave, he'd have to make sure he was extra careful.
"It's alright, Tatalia. Don't worry too much about me. I may have just the thing to give me a bit of light."
He'd sounded confident, but there was a small part of him that worried. He had never really fought against Displacer Beasts like that. It was a new experience to him. He'd come out of it alive, sure, but he'd still gotten pretty cut up from the experience. Now they found themselves walking into the lair with the biggest of the beasts. This was not going to be an easy fight.
"I know your resourcefulness will help tremendously. I have high hopes that we'll come out of this alive. Maybe a bit banged up, but we'll be alive."
They followed the tracks, and they indeed lead to a cave. He took in a deep breath, readying himself for the fight to come.

Tatalia smiled slightly at the compliment about her resourcefulness. She did like to think of herself as resourceful. She'd said as much before already. The little goblin just hoped that quality would be as useful as Ulrich suggested, because sometimes raw fighting ability spoke a lot more loudly than cunning.
The cave was in sight before the two of them knew it. Tatalia gave her pouch of things a once over, taking count of her remaining supplies, and noticed out of the corner of her eye Ulrich starting to walk towards the cave's foreboding entrance.
Tatalia would have whispered something to tell him to stop or wait, but she wanted to stay relatively quiet. The less sounds the pair made, the better. So, instead, she quickly mixed some of the more volatile substances she had in her pouches together - a little flash powder, a little gunpowder, and some spherical glass bottles - and put them together to make a vicious little explosive cocktail.1 Only then did she dart forward to catch up with Ulrich, making nary a sound as she crossed the winding, twisting path between the long-armed trees to stand alongside the battle mage.
The little thief-turned-adventurer cast a glance up at Ulrich. He seemed so confident about the whole affair. He had to be, right, given the powers he wielded? Tatalia chided herself for not having that kind of courage. Sure, she acted brave; sure, she put on a brave face! The little tactician was plenty good at feigning fearlessness. Still, standing at the precipice of the cave, Tatalia sincerely worried whether indecision or cowardice on her part would ruin their attack. The smaller Displacer Beasts had been trouble enough on their own. Who knew how deadly the alpha would be?
Something snapped further inside. The goblin jerked, her sword pointing forward. Silence followed.
This is no time to be jumpy, Tatalia, the little rogue thought admonishingly.
Tatalia spotted many, many bones strewn about the floor of the cave. They were animal bones, mostly, but there were definitely some bones that had come from humanoids. The goblin's glowing eyes could see clearly in the darkness,2 and she could hear something breathing up ahead,3 but... she couldn't spot the creature that left such carnage. Tatalia swallowed silently. She pulled her goggles down over her eyes.
Danger was very, very near, but it wasn't going to come out and fight on the heroes' terms. It was going to let them come to it.
Without a word, the goblin stepped further into the cave.

Ah, the cave... As unsettling as it was, the two of them knew that they had to step inside. Somewhere within there was the sound of a snap, and Ulrich's eyes— although not able to see in the darkness— snapped up to scan their immediate area. A quick twitch in his hand as his training kicked in reflexively. Out of the corner of his eye he could see Tatalia jerk her body in reaction. He'd realized that even that small sound of movement had him on edge; holding his breath in response.
He let out a small breath slowly as he relaxed his nerves. There was definitely something waiting for them to step further inside and they both knew it. Standing there at the entrance, he could only look around at all the bones that lay across the ground. Some animal, some definitely humanoid. His jaw clenches; a bead of sweat rolls it's way down his temple. The pair step into the cave and it hits him immediately.
He could feel it. That ever so familiar feeling of someone— or in this case— something stalking, waiting for a lapse in it's target's defenses.
By all accounts, he could see that Tatalia knew of this fact as well.
He glances to her; not a word left his lips. The look on his face speaking for him, what do you see? How imminent is the danger? But she wouldn't have the chance to answer back.
There was a growl; deep and guttural, followed by the hiss of a large creature. His stomach sank as his eyes scan everything they can in front of the duo again!
This time he cannot fight the training, and his body reflexively sets itself into battle stance. He breathes through his nostrils slowly, calmly; stifling the panic slowly creeping into his lungs. He couldn't see the creature, and if he had been on his own, he'd definitely would've found himself in a bit more of a panic. Tatalia, however, was on this hunt with him as well, and he had learned to trust in her.
If they were going to make it out of this, they were going to have to work together.

The deep growl that echoed through the cave made it very clear that sneaking wasn't going to be an option. The beast inside knew its prey was near. It was the only warning the pair got before the Displacer Beast materialized out of thin air in the darkness, pouncing toward the pair with its claws extended.
Tatalia reacted as quick as she could. She thrust her sword at it, and then it vanished as she struck, reappearing behind her and knocking her to the ground with a swipe of its paws. She rolled across the cave floor and hit the wall with a slam! A burning pain was all across her back. The goblin rolled onto her feet, and she saw the beast was coming right for her again.
"Hammer and anvil!" the goblin shouted to Ulrich, desperately reaching for her belt pouch. "You're the hammer!"
There wasn't time to make a better plan. The beast descended on Tatalia with its jaws wide open... and it got a face full of spicy powder as Tatalia just threw her entire pouch of capsaicin at the beast.1
The creature roared, bouncing off to the side and clawing at its face, coughing and growling in a rage. Sure, Tatalia hadn't done any permanent harm to the beast, but the powder got in its eyes and mouth, buying the heroes a little time to act. It was mere seconds, but those seconds granted the heroes a chance to regain the momentum.
Tatalia, unfortunately, didn't realize how badly hurt she was. Her whole back was raked open, and blood was pooling on the ground around her as she stumbled toward the displacer beast. She was still the anvil. She had to keep it busy.
The goblin reached for another object at her belt - the makeshift bomb she'd put together - and hurled it toward the Displacer beast.2
"Flash!" she shouted to Ulrich. "Eyes!"

The creature would not give them time to even try and plan out an attack— or defense in this case! It had pounced on the two without hesitation! They were prey that wandered right into it's lair, after all.
It had blinked right behind Tatalia in a moment, and slashed right at her back! Ulrich just managed to roll out of the way before one of it's tendrils swiped at him simultaneously! The razors slashed at his coat, shredding part of the tail end!
Hammer and anvil? So that's the tactic we're going with, huh?
Ulrich crouches; readying his legs into a spring position to launch his attack! Then he sees Tatalia throw something into the beast's face as it's busy coughing and growling from her previous defensive powder!
A flash?!
He quickly shuts his eyes as well as he can! Through the darkness cast by his tightly close eyelids, he hears something collide and break onto the ground of the cave. The darkness clouding his eyes is lit up by the pinkish hue of bright light hitting his eyelids for a second! Then he hears the beast growling even more angrily as it swipes around itself!
Now's my chance!
He spots a large rock behind him and he flips himself backward on his hands to land his feet against it. Wisps of wind quickly gather at the base of his feet1; knees bending ready to generate the force needed for a springing motion! His cheeks puff up with air, and with a howling of wind, he's launched quickly off of the rock towards the blinded beast! He streaks through the air and manages to land a kick into the beast's side! This was not without it's consequences though as one of it's tendrils cracks him in the back from the whiplash of his attack!
Ulrich is sent flying off to the side; rolling continuously before stopping himself on his hands and knees. A burning sensation nags at his side as he spots the faint silhouette of blood trickling down onto the ground of the cave.
With it's blindness taken advantage of, the beast felt a massive amount of force collide with it's side! Pain took over and clouded it's senses as it flew straight into a group of stalagmites, shattering them into a cloud of debris. It fights through the pain in it's side as it slams it's paws onto the ground, and a roar of rage echoes throughout the cave!
Ulrich looks up with a grimace as he hisses through his teeth from the pain, "I give you an injury, you give me one back." He strains himself to stand on his feet, "I just have to make sure I take you down before you take us down."

Tatalia grimaced as Ulrich was struck by a flailing tendril. He'd managed to deal a pretty severe blow - with a kick, no less! - but the creature, injured though it was, seemed angrier than ever.
There wasn't much time to plan. The creature was still somewhat blind, dazed from Ulrich's attack, and wheezing from Tatalia's previous trickery. It was recovering quickly, though, and Tatalia only had a short window of opportunity to strike. The small adventurer took the opportunity without hesitation.
Darting across the floor of the cave without making a sound,1 her sword in one hand and her dagger in the other, Tatalia ran about to the creature's back. As it raged and flailed about itself, she got herself into position for a vicious strike. She'd only have one chance, but maybe, maybe she could finish it off! She'd need a little luck...!
There! Tatalia thought as the creature waved its tendrils in Ulrich's direction as the sky mage spoke aloud. It was focused on his voice. Its blurry vision was focused on him. She had her chance!
The clever goblin leapt across through the darkness of the cave and landed on the displacer beast's back. It started to phase, but it wasn't quick enough to escape a flurry of stabs straight into its back from both her blades.2,3 The result was brutal. Tatalia dug those blades in as deep and quickly as she could-
But it was not enough. The furious monster crouched down, leapt upwards, and then phased, teleporting Tatalia with it. It reappeared in the air near Ulrich, and crashed Tatalia into the ceiling with an audible crunch!
Pain coursed through Tatalia's veins like hot lightning all at once. Her whole body felt like it was on fire. She screamed.
The displacer landed on the ground on all fours. Tatalia landed with a crash, and her sword slipped from her hand. She reached out to grab it, but it was too far away. Pushing through the agony, she tried to stand, and- and-
"I can't move my legs?" Tatalia wondered aloud, confused at first. Then the shocking realization struck her, and she repeated herself with fear rising in her voice. "I can't move my legs! I can't move my legs!"
The goblin was panicking. She knew that. Elevated heartbeat; rapid breathing; that wasn't good. She focused, tried to calm herself, and tried to level her thoughts toward the goals at hand. It was hard, but she assessed the situation.
Her attack had worked. The displacer beast was bleeding heavily, and while it was still ready for a fight, its strength was starting to flag. Unfortunately, it was standing not too far from Ulrich, and was clearly ready to turn him into its next victim. But it had forgotten all about her... and she was still in reach.
Hammer and anvil, Tatalia thought to herself.
The goblin grabbed the displacer beast's tail and slashed at it with her dagger. She barely hurt it at all, but striking such a sensitive extremity made it yowl in pain, whip her with one of its lashing tendrils, then turn about to swipe at her with its paw. It knocked her aside like a cat batting a ball of yarn, and she smacked against the wall. Thankfully, it didn't do much more than daze her...
...but she had drawn its attention away from Ulrich, if only for a split second.

Panic and desperation. The air was supercharged with it after Tatalia's attack on the beast.
He'd watched with a pained expression as it retaliated in smashing her into the ceiling above with an audible crunch. His eyes widened at her horrifying realization.
She couldn't move her legs...
But now the beast's sights were set upon Ulrich, and without missing a beat, Tatalia had pushed her panic to the side and created another distraction! She could do nothing as the beast turned to bat her away into another wall!
Seeing his companion, as hurt as she was, being flung into the wall, triggered something. A sharp shock pulsed rapidly through his body; his eyes lit up with a faint blue glow as the rage boiled.
Oh no, you don't! He thought as his body charged forward towards the beast! It quickly turned it's gaze towards him with a growl; the tendrils on it's back quickly swiping at the human daring to challenge it! Bracing for impact, Ulrich's shoulder makes contact with the beast's side and it angrily yelps in pain as it was the same side Ulrich had managed to damage earlier! However, in a blink, Ulrich and the Displacer disappeared before Tatalia's eyes!
The mage reappeared in the middle of the cave; his momentum carried over in the blink cause him to lose his balance and roll across the ground! He quickly stops himself, shooting up onto his feet trying to get a bearing on his surroundings and where the beast was! It had not appeared there in that spot with him. It must have blinked again after dumping him in the middle. His eyes scan around in the darkness with little light poking through the ceiling. If he was being honest, the small rays of light reaching into the cave made it more difficult for his eyes to adjust!
The Displacer would take advantage of that fact as it blinked around the darkness surrounding Ulrich. He could hear it blink from place to place, but the reverberations all around him were disorienting! A growl comes from behind him, and there's nothing he could've done. It had struck him this time in the back! He felt the sharp searing pain on his back as the beast's claws shredded the coat on his shoulders! He yells in pain and rolls out of the way, twisting his body to face behind him, but it's gone in a blink again!
His eyes begin to scan around again as his breathing begins to speed up frantically.
Come on Ulrich, think! You can't see it so how in the hell are you supposed to hit it?!
Then the realization hits him...
You can hear it.
Ulrich takes a deep breath; calming the panic taking over his lungs. He brings his hands together in front of him as magic gathers into his pointer and middle fingers. Small bursts of lightning dance around and blanket his shirt and coat in blue flashes of light. He closes his eyes as he listens to the patterns of blinking that the Displacer employs. There's a slight twitch in his eyes and head as he recognizes a pattern, and in a blur of movement, his arm shoots towards a spot in the darkness!
A lightning bolt shoots from his finger tips1; illuminating the dark cave around it as it streaks through the air! Eyes and teeth light up as the streak zooms in just inches from the Displacer's face! He'd narrowly missed it as the bolt strikes the wall behind it with a small boom and dispersion! Ulrich quickly gathers more lightning magic into his fingers; ready to fire it at a moment's notice! He keeps his eyes closed listening to the blinking of the Displacer, and again he fires into the darkness and misses it by mere inches!
What was he trying to do? He couldn't really be hoping to hit it successfully like this, right?
Then he readies magic into his hand again, and the Displacer notices this! It knows that he can track it by sound, but the human's aim is off! If he is trying to hit it from afar it means that he's vulnerable up close! It blinks all around the human again in a bid to disorient him! It notices his eyes moving around behind the lids as his brows furrow in his struggle to figure out it's movements! Now is the time to strike! It blinks again near the human and lunges with it's claw out to slash across his chest!
Instead it felt a searing pain.
Ulrich hoped that his misfires would eventually train the beast to think that he'd been trying to keep it at range, and it worked! He heard it blink near him and pounce immediately! In an instant, the magic gathered into his hand formed into that of a sword made of lightning and wind!2 His right foot quickly steps backward; giving him the right footing to execute a lightning fast slash at the incoming beast! It connects with the beast's tendrils and part of it's back as it flew by Ulrich!
The Displacer slides across the ground as it digs it's paws in to stops itself! It growls in pain as it looks to it's back to see the searing flesh of it's tendrils and back! It's energy is starting to wane, and it looks back to the adventurers with a growl; a tinge of panic and desperation now gripping it.

For a while, there was little on Tatalia's mind but pain and dizziness. The feelings washed together into a general malaise, a vicious cocktail that pounded in her skull as she groped about the darkness for something to hold onto.
Unlike Ulrich, Tatalia was able to see perfectly well in the dark.1 But everything hurt at the moment. Her vision was foggy, her will was flagging, and her breathing was becoming harsher. Tatalia hadn't felt so weak in a very, very long time. Not since, well... She didn't want to think about it.
I'm okay, Tatalia thought to herself, balling her right hand into a fist so tight that her fingernails were cutting into her palm. I'm here. I'm alive. I'm okay. It's just a few broken bones. I'm alive. I'm okay.
Whether she was or wasn't, Tatalia found a chunk of rock tall and sturdy enough to pull herself up with her left hand. It wasn't easy since her legs weren't working right and she wasn't exactly built like a bodybuilder. She had to drag her legs across the hard stone floor, up across the jagged edges of the outcropping she'd found, all while listening to the crackling, roaring, and tumbling noises from the nearby battle, but Tatalia managed it... barely. Finally perched on something resembling high ground, Tatalia took one deep breath and forced her vision into focus.
Ulrich was letting loose bolts of lightning that lit up the room while the displacer beast nimbly avoided each of them. Though... Tatalia couldn't help but think that Ulrich looked very much in control despite the situation. Yes, he was discharging a considerable amount of energy, but his attacks were forming a pattern. It was hypnotic in a way, lulling the beast into a false sense of security. And Tatalia's hunch was right: right as the Displacer Beast made its move, the experienced lightning mage managed to deliver a devastating electric blow in melee, sending the beast skidding across the cave floor, its claws scraping on the rock like nails across a chalkboard.
It's flagging, Tatalia thought to herself. It's getting weaker!
But Ulrich was getting weaker, too. He'd been injured during the fight, and not from a blunt impact like Tatalia, either. She could smell his blood.2 That... was probably not a good sign. Tatalia needed to fight back somehow, and-
And the beast is looking at me, Tatalia realized.
"Flash!" Tatalia shouted in warning as she raised her dagger into the air. The gold colored jewel embedded in the blade glowed with a terrific light, filling the whole of the cave with a glow like the sun's.3 It was enough to daze the Displacer Beast, and that meant Tatalia had just enough time to hurl her dagger at the monster.
Tatalia was no markswoman, but with her foe so disoriented, she didn't have to be. The dagger did pirouettes through the air, glinting in the crackle of Ulrich's lightning. Then it buried itself in the Displacer Beast's chest, and the feline creature howled in pain, its tendrils whipping about in uncontrolled waves.
It was a short lived victory, however. Half-blind though it still was, the beast teleported again, reappeared in front of Tatalia, and swung its claws at her.
Tatalia acted on instinct. She thrust her right hand toward the side and a stream of webs flew out, clinging to the nearby wall. The goblin snapped away from where she was and toward the anchor point, the magical cat's claws tearing strands of her hair away as she just barely avoided becoming a corpse.4
Unfortunately, the impact Tatalia felt moments later made her wish she was a corpse. Her chest and legs crashed into the cave wall, and she let out a shout of pain as she fell back to the floor. That... That didn't feel so good.
The displacer beast growled. Tatalia looked up. Desperation and fear had only made it deadlier as it pounced at the crippled goblin, claws extended, ready to finish her off once and for all. Tatalia reached for her sheathed sword- but it was gone! Her dagger- no, that was embedded in the beast! The goblin fumbled about her belt and grabbed for something, anything she could use as a weapon, and...
Bag! A heavy bag. Tatalia didn't think; she just ripped it off her belt and threw it at the creature!
It wasn't the heaviest of bags, truthfully. However, it spilled open into a flood of caltrops as it met the monster, and sheer chance led to one of those caltrops rolling up its face and burying itself in the predator's eye.5
Tatalia didn't really see what happened next so much as she felt it. The displacer beast covered its face with its paws, distracted by the terrible pain it suddenly felt, and crashed into the goblin. Caltrops found their way into its legs and stomach, but it was still alive, still angry, still confused. Tatalia rolled out from underneath it, squirming just out of the feline's reach, and cupped one hand over her mouth to shout at Ulrich.
"Now! Finish it now!"
Tatalia hoped Ulrich had some magic left in him, because she was running short on pretty much everything, including blood. And she really hoped the mage didn't step on one of the caltrops before he finished the Displacer Beast off!

The attack had landed, sure, but the fight wasn't over just yet. Ulrich feel onto one knee as his fatigue and loss of blood started to creep upon him. He could see strands of red liquid trailing down the fabrics of his battle torn jacket and dropping to the cave floor. He sharply takes in a breath as he wills his senses to dull the pain of the injury across his back.
Just then he hears Tatalia shout something! He looks up in time to see her raise her dagger into the air again! He quickly shuts his eyes tightly as a flash of light tries to make it's way past his eyelids to blind him!
He opens his eyes; Tatalia's tactic had worked! The beast was blinded again— if only for a small amount of time! Though nothing would stop an angry cornered creature from attacking it's prey! Ulrich watched wide eyed as the beast blinked in front of Tatalia attempting to swipe at the goblin! His eyes followed as she'd managed to slip away just in time with what looked to be a stream of spider webs. Her injured body, however, had not allowed for her to safely make contact with the cave wall, and the beast seized it's opportunity yet again!
Ulrich struggles with the last bit of strength he can muster; his body shakes as he forces himself onto his feet. "Come on damn it! Get up," he says to himself in frustration. He has magic left in his body for at least two more spells. One of them being his last resort to ending a fight as it drains him of all his energy reserves. Ulrich takes in a deep breath and exhales slowly to calm the panic in his chest. He closes his fist tightly; lightning dances to gather into his fist.1
Tatalia manages something yet again using her bag full of caltrops to distract the beast! The goblin's resourcefulness never ceases to amaze the lightning mage.
This is their chance to finish it finally!
Ulrich nods; his eyes flicker with determination as they lock on to the Displacer Beast yowling in pain! He charges now; fist a light with streaks of lightning trailing behind him! As he closes the distance between them the Displacer Beast notices his foot steps through it's yowls of pain! It begins to turn it's body towards Ulrich, but the loss of the sight in one of it's eyes causes it to make a fatal mistake. It cannot judge accurately how far the mage is from it! With it's strength flagging it sluggishly continues to turn it's body until it gives him the perfect opening.
The lightning mage disappears in howling of wind and streaks of lightning!2 He reappears suddenly with his momentum carrying him quickly right towards the beast! His left foot plants into the ground as he twists his body to swing his punch with all the might he can! The howling of the wind distorts into that of a battle cry as Ulrich delivers the devastating blow to the Displacer Beast's rib cage with a CRRRAAAAAACCCCCKKKKKK! The Beast couldn't even give a yelp before it was sent flying into the wall with an echoing boom that reverberated against the cave walls.
Ulrich's legs give out and he ends up rolling across the ground; a pile of rubble bringing the weary lightning mage to a stop. He pants from the exertion and spares a look up to the wall. Clouds of obliterated rock fill the immediate area, and he swipes at the air to clear them. As it clears he can finally see the figure of the Displacer Beast lodged into the rock wall; it's ribcage shattered from the blow he'd been able to land on it earlier.
His head falls back onto the ground and he lets out a sigh of relief. The battle is over, they had done it. His eyes around as he tries to see if his companion is okay. "Tatalia! Are you okay," A wince of pain and exhaustion in between, "It's over! We did it! We won!"
