This is by all means a terrible idea.
Cantio von Lumen is no adventurer; he is a minstrel— a humble musician— who dabbles in the arcane for his performances... but what had possessed him to reach out to the Mage's Guild? He is no mage, and yet, there is still something that resembles a letter of consideration in his pockets, folded instructions on his initiation, and now he is on a boat following their lead like a sheep to the slaughter.
Alone; because he hadn't wanted to burden his companions into something as silly as his own whim.
He knows deep down why he reached out to the Guild; his proclivity for the arcane grows little by little, and Solaria knows he's got no idea how to truly use it. No idea where it's come from. It's those little things that sometimes keeps him up at night, curious, while the light dances off his palm in the dark of a tavern's room— the feeling is so natural now that it doesn't garner from him a second thought.
But... maybe it should.
He was once told his line had demonic blood in it somewhere, so the idea of bending light... seems odd, doesn't it? It does to him; even his musical mentor writes it off as a blessing of some kind; but, why? His family doesn't have a history of the arcane— unless there's something someone hasn't told him. Plus, he... wants to learn to make use of it.
For his companions' sake, if not his own.
Feeling a burden and coward is a tiresome title to bear, truly.
It's the boat hitting the waves that knocks Cantio from his idle thoughts; he grips the rails to keep himself from falling overboard and blinks into the present. Fog and mist rolls low amongst the churning waves of the dawn; the pastel sky turned red by volcanic smoke as it billows high from mountains unseen beyond the caves. Shipwreck debris lie in the water; decaying boards floating beneath the midst. Jagged rocks rise from above the fog, and the captain, an elven woman who goes by the name of Brooke, has managed to navigate it all with ease... thus far.
"We're almost to your coordinates, minstrel!" she calls out from the helm; Cantio waves back, nervous, as the crew works around his presence.
"Thank you again for humouring me!"
It's a bit of a weird mix; the people on this boat are largely bounty hunters posing as pirates from the upperclass court of Thorock... apparently. He's not entirely sure if he believes them, but no one has stabbed him thus far while he's been on the ship— and the instructions given to him said he could trust her, so... given Thorock's reputation, he'd take a recommendation over his gullible sense of trust.
He assumes she could, maybe, be a part of the guild herself if they directed him to her for this initiation thing, but... he has no proof of that. He's not seen her wield magic past being a talented driver.
He looks out towards the shore, where a gaping cave yawns. Water laps into the maw from the Luna Sea, foaming and frothing around jagged teeth.
The ship stops.
Cantio blinks, looking towards a couple of crewsman as they dump an anchor overboard, then looks towards Brooke; once she's certain the anchor's been dropped, the elven woman trudges down the stairs towards him. "Well! This is it!" she remarks, gesturing towards the huge, dark maw of the cavern. He looks after her for a moment, brows furrowing beneath his mask, before looking back to her. She's stopped next to him, arms crossed as she looks out towards the cave.
"...So..." he remarks, offering her a sheepish side-glance. "Am I supposed to swim over there, or...?"
Captain Brooke looks thoughtful for a moment. "If we got any closer, we'd surely snag on the rocks; this is about as close as we can get, but I can send someone with a rowboat to get you into it..." she looks amongst the crew, pointing out a purple Tiefling from amongst them. "Hey, kid! Get the rowboat ready for drop, would you? Take our guest out to the Maw of the Dragon over there, and try not to beach the thing on the rocks, yeah?"
Cantio turns to look at the crew-mate, and bows his head thankfully— grateful for the help— even if the captain's demanding it from him.

Javal had somehow made it his goal to help this mysterious musician to join the mage guild. By some happenstance he was onboard the elf' brook's ship. She was a friend of his captain, Captain Wilford Wyther and she had reached out to him to go on a Maw of the Dragon to help a bard join the mage guild. This piqued Javal's interest surely a bard wanting to join a mage guild must be a very interesting person whoever they are so by that alone he was fully onboard with helping this guy out. As they had got closer to the destination Brook yelled for him to get down and accompany the stranger to the maw. He hurriedly sprinted over giving the stranger a wide grin, "Looks like it's time to have some fun, new friend". " He grabs the boat throws it over to the water and grabs the stranger easily and jumps overboard and lands on the boat. "Sorry for perhaps scaring you like that", Javal says, "I got really excited and got carried away". Javal sighs and says, "It seems introductions are necessary my name is Javal Zarrias former member of the Black Dragon Pirate Fleet. As you can see by my tail and blue tone I am a Tiefling I hope we can be friends".

Captain Brooke picks out perhaps the most enthusiastic of her crewmates— a blue-toned Tiefling that he's seen assisting the crew for the past day or so. Granted, he's been so caught up in his own thoughts about this whole endeavor that he's hardly had the energy to mingle with the crew, but; before he can really introduce himself, the stranger comes bounding up to him with a wide grin. Cantio smiles in return, "Indeed! Thank you for your he— oh, okay, we're going!" In all the man's enthusiasm, Cantio finds himself pulled along and practically thrown overboard with the crewmate when he jumps onto the rowboat. He manages to yelp behind him, "Thank you, Captain— we'll be back!" Captain Brooke laughs, clearly amused by Javal's enthusiasm. "Go easy on the cityslicker, boy! Try to be back before sundown, you hear?" she calls after them.
"Aaah...." Cantio hits the rowboat a bit awkwardly, flapping a bit to regain his balance as the rowboat rocks with their combined weight; once it's stopped, he freezes, statue-still until the displacement of water has fully calmed beneath them. He slowly eases back into motion, placing his feet carefully; he's been on plenty of ships before, but rowboats are something else entirely. He looks up as Javal apologizes, smiling sheepishly at him. "Oh, don't worry about it! It's a nice change of pace I'd s—" The rowboat tilts a little when he places his weight too heavily, and Cantio chokes on his words; he clears his throat, balancing himself carefully. "Y'know what? I'm— I'm just going to sit down before I end up tipping us over." The stranger introduces himself while Cantio cautiously sits down; able to displace his weight a little easier that way, and the bard smiles up at him as he folds his hands across his knees. "Javal Zarrias," he remarks, "My name is Cantio von Lumen; you may call me Cantio. I am a musician and a storyteller who hails from the city of Darkveil; it is a pleasure to meet you, and I am eternally grateful for your help in retrieving this artifact for the guild." The Tiefling lowers his head in as much of a bow as he can muster, given he's already seated. "And, it's always nice to meet a fellow Tiefling; I hope we can get along, as well!"

After introductions are made Javal grabs the paddles and started rowing as fast as he could making the rowboat go as fast as he could. After going so fast they ended on the island's shoreline he dropped the paddles and jumped off the boat. He stands up straight stretches his body and lets out a great sigh. The island before them was very wild like with a large jungle in the middle of the island. He then beckons Cantio forward it is time to investigate the strange island. He walked inside the jungle looking around lifting vines and leaves anything that he could find interesting. He stops after he spots it in the middle of the jungle lies a strange cave with some muddy footprints all over leading to stone stairs. He calls over Cantio in a whispered yell, "Cantio I found the cave". It appears that it was time to get the adventure under way.

Javal rows them out to the shoreline of the Dragon's Maw; and Cantio breathes a sigh, tail curling nervously over his shoes as he watches the ship become smaller and smaller on the horizon. He looks over his shoulder, to the ominous shoreline as it approaches— and hopes that this entire thing will not be a disaster. Eventually, the rowboat crests against the shallow shore, and Cantio stans; waiting until Javal beckons him, to hop out of the boat.
Cool water splashes at his leather boots as he wades to the shore to join him; inside the dragon's maw, it's... strange. Tropical, even; which seems odd for the Dragon's Cradle climate, but the cave is also quite humid inside... almost like they've truly walked straight into a dragon's maw. Like it's breathing; and he tries not to think too much about the details of what it might be like to walk inside a living creature's mouth.
"Well! Here we are," he sighs, his voice hushed as he runs a hand along the soft fronds of a nearby fern. "This is much more... lively than I was expecting, to be honest. It's kind of pretty, actually." He leaves footprints in the sand as he traces the outskirts, studying the foliage for anything, when Javal calls out to him. Cantio turns to look with a soft hum of, "Hm?" and moves to where the blue-toned Tiefling has pushed aside some of the foliage. "Oh! So you did— look at that..."
He peers into the darkness, extending a hand out; from his palm blooms a flower, seemingly crafted from light. The gentle glow illuminates the two Tieflings and the cave; the stairs, and... the footprints.
Cantio looks down, brows furrowing beneath his mask. "Oh," he remarks, soft and anxious. "We should proceed with caution from here, in case we're not the only ones who've come looking for something... Those look awfully fresh." He looks up into the maw of the cave that Javal has found, and takes a breath. There's a little flicker of anxiety in his core— a worry that perhaps... someone has beaten him to the punch.
He does not regret those few days he took with Ray to help rescue those dwarves in the mines, when he should have been here... but... no. No, he does not regret that; even if it costs him this initiation. He steels himself, patting Javal on the shoulder. "Keen eyes! Let's get going, but— quietly." he remarks, stepping forwards onto the staircase. "Careful, in case the mud's slippery; I don't see anyone ahead right now, but that doesn't mean anything." He makes sure to stay within Javal's range— the blossom of light in his hand providing a source of illumination for the both of them as they make their way down the stairs.
As they go, Cantio swings his hand from side to side, the tone of his skin turned orange in the soft glow of light in his hand; that's when he notices... engravings, on the walls. "Oh...?" he hesitates on the stairs, lifting the blossom towards the markings. "This isn't common, is it? They look like... hieroglyphs, almost... Hold on." he remarks quietly, narrowing his eyes as he traces the carved patterns. The Tiefling murmurs something beneath his breath; the man's eyes go glossy, glittering gold— a trick he learned from a friend. (1) From his perspective, he is able to read the hieroglyphs: he traces the images as he goes. "To enter the beast's maw is an act of foolishness; turn back or tread carefully, lest the mountain devour you whole."
Cantio frowns, blinking away the glass from his gaze.
"Well, I very much don't like the sound of that... It sounds like we should expect more than company ahead."

When Cantio confirmed his suspicions that they were not the only ones that were here on this island searching for the mysterious sol stone, Javal got excited a chance to beat down wicked fiend's for the sake of the world. As Javal grabbed his torch to shine around and walked throughout the underground tunnels he and cantio came across a a curious impasse. There are three tunnels to go through now which one is the question. They all looked exactly the same so Javal decided to take them through the first one, surely nothing bad would happen from the first choice, would it? As they went through the first tunnel there were runes and writings on the wall that Javal could not read or understand but Cantio stopped them in order to read them. As they both stood there standing Javal then began to hear a rumbling noise up ahead.

Cantio had barely finished reading the runes when the ground begins to rumble beneath their feet. The Tiefling blinks and perks up; a tiny sliver of terror and dread rises in his chest as he looks towards the farthest end of the hallway. The walls tremble and the floor shudders; pebbles, stones, and dust trickle from the top of the tunnel, bouncing on the stone below, as the rumbling intensifies.
"Oh— oh, that's bad— that's real bad news. We should turn back and try another—" Cantio turns around; but as he does, he realizes the tunnel behind them has been blocked off. The last sliver of light from the outside world vanishes behind them as a rock rolls obediently into a subtle groove in the earth— trapping them inside, and locking them into what Cantio can only presume is an incredibly trapped hallway.
"Why'd they warn us to turn back if they weren't even going to make it an option!?" he barks at the stone, pressing his hands against the cool surface with his tail flicking irritably; he sighs, worriedly looking towards the darkness of the tunnel behind them. It seems, for now, the source of the rumbling was the stone's movement, because it slowly starts to settle. He hopes that's all it was, anyways... but he can't be sure, because the world in front of them is dark.
Tiny pebbles drop from the ceiling, clicking and clacking against the tunnel floor as the world around them finally stops shaking. Cantio takes a deep breath, folding his hands in front of him. "Alright... Treading carefully, then, is our one option, until we can find the artifact and a way to get out." Right. This is fine. They can totally handle this.
"This whole place is—"
Light suddenly erupts from the end of the tunnel before he can finish, illuminating Javal and Cantio from the front; and with a realization of horror, Cantio realizes that it's a pillar of fire heading straight for the two— and they've been trapped in with it!
"Duck!" he yelps, swinging his arms forwards. Glimmers of light erupt from the earth, glistening in a golden, transparent wall before them. Cantio moves his hands down— touching the wall to the earth— and ducks behind it, hoping that Javal will follow suit. In seconds, the flames consumes the pair of adventurers; it crowds above and around the wall that Cantio put up, erupting with heat and ember — but the wall keeps them from falling victim to the deadly trap. It cannot get through.
After a few seconds of air, heat, and scorching temperature — the fire begins to die, leaving Cantio and Javal in a hallway scorched and blackened with ash.

Javal barely has to time to react as Cantio screams to "Duck!", he does of course. As he ducks he barely avoides the giant eruption of flame beam. He sprints behind Cantio as he casts a wall. Javal smiles a huge grin if this is it then he's happy. Happy that he was able to live a life that Captain Wilford would be proud of. He was a bit sad that Cantio wouldn't be able to join the guild but hey they did have a cool time. It wouldn't be all to bad, dying, maybe he'd meet his dad, the black dragon crew, and any other cool people in the afterlife that is if his dad and old crew were dead which hey they might not be in that case the afterlife may be lonely for Javal. As he is ready to accept his death nothing happens the wall saved them. They weren't going to die today not right now at least. Finally the wall is thrown down and the hallway that they were once in a few seconds again is totally changed ruined it is left scorched and black. "Well", Javal says, "let's continue, i thought we were gonna die so anyways let's continue". He begins walking ahead the scorched tunnel. This time Javal is carrying his sword out unsheathed just in case anything else happens.

The heat and wind begin to subside; and as the fire ceases, the remaining embers scatter above them. Sparks rain from the sky as Cantio lifts his head, shoulders quivering with the fright of very nearly being burnt to a crisp. "Javal?" he stutters, looking to his left towards the other Tiefling. He's relieved to see the young man is alive and well; in one piece, but perhaps just as shaken up as he.
Cantio clears his throat, hands shaking as he calls down the Wall of Light. It flickers out of existence, leaving behind harmless sparks, which fade away. "Goodness..." he laughs nervously, pushing himself up to his boots as Javal stands next to him. The rock walls of the tunnel are blackened with ash and soot, burned deeply by the trap. "Haha, well... almost die, but we're fine. I'm so sorry about that." Cantio apologizes, breathing a sigh as he catches up to Javal in a light jog. "Right, we should certainly carry on... Carefully."
Cantio takes a fan from his belt sash, unfurling it in front of his chest as they walk— just in case.
"I suppose, if nothing else... no one triggered that trap before us." he remarks, his voice still a bit shaky. "Which means our company most likely didn't come down this way. That could be a good thing." he keeps his voice hushed, just in case anyone overhears them; but he's nervous, and he tends to talk when he's nervous.
Eventually, the two make it to the end of the hall: where they discover the trap that had been set off. At the very end of the hall, sits an elaborately carved dragon statue; it's mouth is open, scalded at the edges by soot and ash— magically triggered to set off upon entry, it seems. The dragon is pointing in two directions, its claws intertwined. Cantio circles around it, tail flicking nervously. "Another intersection?" Cantio sighs, looking between the directions.

Javal approached the dragon statue behind Cantio with his katana out just in case. Javal gets into a stance charges his katana and brings it to the side cutting off the dragon head from the small pillar where it stood Javal then grabbs the stone head from the floor and takes it under his left arm. Javal says "We should go to the left side since the last tunnel we went through was on the right side so the chances of us dying this time may be lowered, although it was fun it would be better to get the job done safely". So Javal and Cantio head to the left tunnel as they do the both see runes like the previous ones on the wall. Cantio stops them to read them and says that it says that the relic should be three more tunnels from now. Up ahead the tunnel they hear people arguing Javal then puts his cool stone head trophy down on the tunnel floor and sprints ahead and says "Hello foul fiends my name is Javal Zarrias and I am strong. You are lucky that you have meet powerful people like me and my new friend cantio before you wicked life comes to an end". Javal stretches then stands up straight and gets into a stance with his katana and charges.

"Oh—" Cantio looks at Javal in surprise as the other man cleaves the dragon's head from the small pillar. He taps his fan against his lips, breathing a nervous laugh. "Goodness, that's quite a sharp blade, isn't it?" he remarks, watching the purple Tiefling tuck the dragon's head beneath his arm.
He wonders, distantly: what does he plan to do with it?
Javal speaks, and Cantio blinks; he nods, laughing a bit nervously, "Fun?" he repeats, "Well... I do suppose that's one way to look at it, but— yes, I would also like to get this done safely." He claps his fan in the palm of his other hand and nods to himself in confirmation. "So... yes. Let's go left." He gestures to the left tunnel with the fan in his hand and steps after Javal as they head into the left-side tunnel; he remains ever-vigilant for the possibility of further traps, but comes across more old language, instead.
He takes that as a good sign.
He pauses for just a moment to read it: it's a riddle that takes him a moment to figure out, but in the end he determines that the riddle is giving them the directions to the relic they're searching for. He tells Javal the directions that he guesses, and points them out as they approach more off-shoots and intersections.
Cantio is quite proud of themselves: they don't seem to come across anymore traps, which means, he likely interpreted the riddle correctly! This is quite the feat for someone like him, frankly; but the internal celebration does not last long, because they start to hear voices. Angry, arguing voices; and Cantio realizes that they are most definitely close by. He slows his steps, opening his mouth to tell Javal that they should remain quiet: when a blue blur sprints past him. "Eh? Hm??" He finds himself looking at Javal's back as he explodes out of the tunnel, introducing both of them loudly to whomever is in the room.
Oh dear.
The bard rushes forwards as Javal leaves the mouth of the tunnel and looks into the room.
There's three men— just as surprised as he is— surrounding something that resembles an old tablet on an altar. They're all equally as surprised as he is to see Javal charging towards them. The three stop arguing quickly, the largest of them snarling; a big, burly man with a warhammer; who charges back towards Javal with his hammer ready to slam forth. The other two retreat a little— one of them pulling out a bow and arrow, and notching it.
Cantio jumps out of the tunnel, heart fluttering in his chest as he lands on the rock below. The Tiefling extends a hand; light springs from his palm, illuminating the room. Like a snake, light slithers across the floor— shooting past Javal, and twisting around the burly stranger's legs— restricting how quickly he can move. "Be careful, Javal!" he calls nervously, eyes flitting to the man with the bow.
He gasps and ducks, just narrowly avoiding an arrow as it pings sharply into the wall behind him.

Javal was having so much fun. Almost being killed by a no good tricky blast of light was no fun, but battling against wicked fiends now that brought so much excitement to Javal's heart. In times like this there isn't any random puzzle to solve but just you, your allies, and your enemies. Javal was currently battling against a big burly lizardfolk guy with a Warhammer, man this was gonna be a bit tough. Javal and the lizardfolk danced around Javal knew he could take a maybe one hit but even so one blow by that hammer he'd be down and out so he made sure to put defense and dodging as his first priority. Javal knew Cantio would have his back and he was right cantio was right behind when he saw light pour from his hands trapping the big guy's movement began to slow down about while javal continued at his regular speed they kept going back and forth until Javal saw it, his chance. The big guy slammed his hammer into the floor where Javal stood and Javal dodged just out of the way then slashed his opponent through the chest slicing the reptile in a diagonal half. After that the other mysterious guy charges at him with a spear enraged at him killing his compatriot. As Javal dodged the blow he sees his new opponent is young dwarf looking fellow. All while this was going on he can barely sense Cantio battling against a sun elf looking fellow with a bow who was trying to hit him earlier.

Javal is far more attuned to combat than Cantio, for certain; while Javal seems almost thrilled to be in the pits of combat, Cantio is less so— at least, in regards to the combat part. It has been several months since Cantio accidentally took the life of a cultist on a ship to the Arcane Academy... but he's never entirely recovered from that distress; and since, he has preferred to do what he can to avoid actively participating in combat unless totally necessary.
Instead, he chooses to be a pain in the neck— and a support to his compatriots. So, had Javal not been here, he would certainly be at an incredible disadvantage.
Javal and the burly man engage in combat; Javal is swift, dodging the Lizardfolk's hammer as it cracks against the floor and slashes the reptile across the chest— but Cantio is busy, as well. He extends his hands, throwing up a wall of light, similar to the one he had earlier. (1) An arrow thuds harmlessly against it, and the Sun Elf scowls; it seems, then, he tries to change targets when he realizes it's useless— so he points his weapon at Javal, instead. Cantio snaps his fingers— unwilling to allow Javal to be harmed on his watch— and the Sun Elf jumps as a sharp ringing blares in his right ear. (2)
He unleashes the arrow by accident in his surprise— and the arrow pings harmlessly against the ground to the left of the blue Tiefling's feet.
"Listen, I actually don't want to fight." Cantio admits to the Sun Elf; he's dropped his wall of light, and the Sun Elf begins to back away— once again aiming his bow and arrow at him as he steps towards what looks like an exit in the back of the room. "I'm just here to recover some lost history; my friend, however, is very talented with a blade, and very eager to fight. Can't we come to some kind of truce?"
The Sun Elf fires at him yet again.
(1) Wall of Light — You throw up a transparent screen of yellow light, hanging in the air and glowing. This wall of light will remain for three post hovering in midair, and will protect anyone who stands behind it. This wall can be controlled by its creator, allowing you to push it forwards, backwards or side to side.
(2) Minor Trickery — You can draw forth a minor amount of magic to assist yourself, regardless of the job. This spell lets you interact with small objects and can do a variety of things. You can create noises centered on an area, even if nothing is there to make the sound. You can open or close unlocked doors and windows without needing to touch them. While effective at many things, this spell excels at being a distraction.

Javal had just finished killing the big lizard guy and now was facing against his new opponent a fierce dwarf fellow. Although the dwarf was way smaller than Javal that did not make him any less deadly than his compatriot his spear kept javal at bay not giving him the opening to deal a fatal blow. He both continued to clash katana to spear javal versus he dwarf. Javal can guess that the other guy cantio is facing is is beginning to aim his shoots at Javal. But that's ok because he trust in cantio to keep him safe. An arrow lands right next to Javal and he grabs it still doing combat with the dwarf and then he with one hand wielding his katana the arrow in his vest and his other hand outstretched summons a small snowball storm above the dwarf not doing any damage against him but distracting him enough to stab him the arrow his friend shot at Javal He unleashes the arrow by accident in his surprise— and the arrow pings harmlessly against the ground to the left of the blue Tiefling's feet. "You just..." he looks to his fallen compatriots, pursing his lips; Cantio misses a look of acknowledgement as the Sun Elf looks back to them, frowning. Slowly, he lowers his bow and arrow. "Fine. You want to know everything?" he growls. "The tablet here contains information that we need; a puzzle piece to a location of great significance and wealth." he laughs a little, his voice pitched nervously. "I mean, isn't that why you're here? After all, who doesn't want to make it big? Never worry about finances again? Live it up like those nobles in the upper level of Thorock?" He takes a hesitant step backwards, looking slyly between Cantio and Javal when— "Let's go!" Cantio realizes too late that he's made a fatal mistake; there was a fourth person in the room he hadn't seen. The Sun Elf was buying them time. He turns to look sharply, realizing the tablet is held by a young elven woman— who's running past the fallen, out through the exit.
"Wh—" The Sun Elf fires into the floor of the cavern; smoke explodes from the impact, creating a heavy smokescreen that fills the room and blinds the two Tieflings within it. Cantio coughs, covering his mouth as he steps away; he hears rapid footsteps as the two elves flee the premises.
Eventually, the smoke clears, and Cantio looks to where the tablet had once been in a mild panic.
It's definitely gone; taken right from under their noses.
