The battle in the fighting pits left Tatalia utterly drained. She'd never faced something so awful before, never had to contend with a beast like the giant owlbear. She still saw flashes of the carnage in her mind when she closed her eyes. It was haunting.
A whole night had passed since then. Tatalia awoke in one of the inn's shabby bedrooms upstairs, and stumbled up to peer into the cracked mirror on the wall. She looked... paler than usual, but she felt sick too, so that didn't surprise Tatalia much. The goblin also felt a bit itchy. That made sense, too, given the poor quality of the blankets.
Sighing, Tatalia just turned away from the mirror and got dressed for a journey. She stuffed her shoddy backpack as best she could, then gathered up her remaining supplies. She tugged on her magic gloves, tied her sheathed dagger to her belt, tugged her boots onto her feet and her goggles onto her forehead, then headed down the creaky, gray stairs of the Safe Dry Sleep Eat Spot toward the common room.
It was a misty, pale morning, and there weren't many people downstairs. Besides a human merchant, a lizardwoman, and Tiny Two-Toes himself, the whole place was empty, and the room was quiet. The merchant coughed quietly, and the sound carried through the whole room. So did each of Tatalia's normally silent steps across the floorboards. The young goblin made her way to the bar, and before she even arrived Tiny Two Toes was serving up a bowl of his infamous Pot Soup. The stuff slopped down into a bowl for Tatalia, and she accepted it with a nod. There wasn't a need to say anything else. She really didn't feel like talking, anyway.
Tatalia slurped little spoonfuls of her meal at her favorite seat in the inn, peering out a nearby window to stare at the marsh beyond. She had, at least, made a little money in the Fighting Pits, enough to pay for another expedition. But she'd need more still if she was to realize any of her dreams. Schools didn't build themselves, and neither did museums.
As she sat in the inn, a dwarf marched on in, his red beard studded with silver bands. He was another merchant, surely, and just as expected he sat before his human compatriot and the two of them began to talk. Tatalia found herself listening in.
"I've hired some porters to help us with the journey west," the dwarf began, adjusting his belt as he scooched his chair forward. "T'was a fair bit harder'n you might expect. If'n I had a coin for every sot what told me their brother or cousin'd already run off with another merchant, I'd be rich!"
"The ones heading out east, I take it?" asked the human with a distinctly Zeinavian accent, sipping idly from his mug of ale.
"The very same. Couldn't find any caravan guards, however, and I doubt the eastbound lads could find any either. These swamp folk aren't keen to leave their home."
"Well, let's hope they don't run into any monsters out there," mused the human, setting his drink down and sighing. "They were good fellows, and their leader made for a fine gambling partner. If they face even half the troubles we did, they'll wish they'd waited long enough to hire a few more caravan guards. I suggest we ourselves wait another day or two before heading off..."
The conversation was intriguing to Tatalia partly because she could very well imagine what a merchant caravan desperate for guards and out on the road already would be willing to pay. Heading east meant heading towards Kings Valley, and Tatalia wondered if perhaps a change of scenery would lighten her mood. As she pondered that, Tatalia noticed someone else had made their way into the common room without her noticing - someone she recognized!
"Excuse me," Tatalia began, standing up from her seat as she approached the bespectacled man, making nary a sound but her speech as she came up behind him. "Weren't you in the arena with me yesterday, sir? I never had a chance to properly thank you; that fight might have ended rather differently if not for your magic."

A pale morning full of mist greeted Ulrich as he slowly rose from the bed he slept on. The images of what he witnessed in the arena still fresh in his mind. He gave a sigh, running his hand through his messy bed hair. He grabbed his clothes and equipment, getting dressed himself for another day ahead of him.
He'd made his way down into the common room. He needed to let his mind start up for the day. He surveyed the room around him. There were not that many people in the common room at the moment; two merchants conversed at one of the tables, there was a lizardwoman, the Barkeep, and a familiar goblin woman who had taken a seat at the bar.
He smiled to himself, but then he remembered the horrors of the day before in the pits. He elected not to say anything to her, in case she'd want to forget about what happened.
He decided to take a seat himself at one of the tables. He would instead let his mind take the time to wake itself as he sat there.
He ordered a drink— which had gotten to him rather quickly— and as he took the first sips he overheard the conversation the two merchants were having.
Something about a fellow merchant caravan heading out, and maybe running into some trouble? Interesting.
His thought were interrupted by a familiar voice. He quickly turned around to meet the gaze of the goblin woman who was just sitting at the bar not too long ago. He hadn't even heard her footsteps approaching! She must be someone who was very light on her feet.
"Ah, yes! Yes, I was! No need to thank me, really! It was all of our efforts that brought it down. I should be thanking you— it was your resourcefulness that had a huge impact on our chances of survival."
He gave her a warm smile as he extended his hand out to her, "And no need for the formalities. I am Ulrich, Ulrich Ambriz."

"I suppose I'll take that compliment! I do pride myself on my resourcefulness," the goblin cheerily replied as she grasped the man's hand and shook it vigorously. Her accent was very, very different from the sort typically associated with goblins. "But, really, if I had half the capacity for spellcasting that you do, I think I'd have solved most of my problems very differently!
"Anyway, it's good to meet you, Ulrich! I'm Tatalia the Explorer!" The goblin withdrew her hand and bowed dramatically. Perhaps she'd been asked not to be too formal, but she performed the gesture with aplomb. "I'm scraping together whatever coin I can to fund future archaeological expeditions. I doubt I need to tell you how steep travel expenses can be these days!"
The goblin cracked a big, sharp-toothed grin up at the human. But as the adventurers spoke with one another, Tatalia couldn't help but overhear the conversation behind her continue on for a while yet. They mused over what sort of threats could be lurking in the swamp, what sort of fate might await the other caravan, and each time they did, Tatalia felt a little more guilty, as if she wasn't doing her due diligence. She was, after all, more than capable of guarding a caravan. Probably. Tatalia, at least, could fake it 'til she made it. And Ulrich... well, his prowess was without question!
A thought came to Tatalia's mind, then. The goblin peered up curiously at Ulrich, then tapped her chin.
"You wouldn't happen to be traveling eastward, would you?" she asked slowly, cocking an eyebrow up to comically lofty heights. "I'd daresay I hear the jingling sound of opportunity, and by the look on your face I'd wager you hear the same. And we're both capable enough warriors! Hmm...
"Perhaps this is a tad sudden, but I think it fortuitous we've stumbled upon each other! Wouldn't you agree, Mr. Ambriz?" Tatalia's grin grew all the wider, and she nudged the human in the leg with her elbow. "Between my good business sense and charm, your impressive magical powers, and our combined martial prowess, I believe we could bargain our way into the good graces of those wayfaring merchants and get paid twice the usual rate! Triple if they saw our fight in the arena!"
Tatalia laughed at the last part, though her voice cracked as she did. She did her best not to think about the details of the fight, though. The gore was... too much. Too much.
"Aaanyway! What do you say? Should be easy as beetle pie, right?"

"I am going to travel to the east today, in fact. I'm travelling back to King's Valley, and I thought that maybe I'd run into the caravan those two are talking about."
He rose from his seat checking his equipment.
"Oh, I quite agree," he responded with a smile. "Though I probably would have just ended up helping them if I was travelling back alone. It is nice to be paid every once in a while."
He brought his hand to his chin, a look of contemplation formed on his face. If he was to be paid for helping the caravan, he could leave some of the reward back home when he returned.
It seemed Fate decided to give him a bit of good luck today— as opposed to any other time she decided to intrude on Ulrich's plans. He was in good spirits after this thought, but Fate is a trickster, a comedian— at least when it came to Ulrich.
At the mention of their fight just yesterday, Ulrich's mind then flashed back yet again. He shook away the images in his head and looked back Tatalia with a smile.
"I will gladly join you in this venture, Tatalia!" He gestured for her to lead the way.

Tatalia smiled brightly across at Ulrich, pleased with his agreement. She nodded in answer, then marched out of the inn, eager to get back on the road.
"I can feel the riches in my hands already! Just you wait, Ulrich," the goblin declared happily, casting another grin over her shoulder at him. "This is going to be the easiest job ever!"
"This has got to be the worst job ever," Tatalia muttered as the sounds of strange, ethereal roars rose into the air all around them.
Catching up with the caravan had been a simple enough task. Sure, the swampy terrain was uninviting, but Tatalia was an experienced tracker1 and no stranger to the Marsh Flats. She led Ulrich through the swamp at a brisk pace, seeming to find exactly the right places to plant her feet, spotting shortcuts with her keen goblin eyes, and always finding traces of the caravan's passage when it was thought to be lost. Tatalia was very good at her job.
No, finding and catching up with the caravan wasn't the hard part. It was all the displacer beasts surrounding it.
"These tracks look strange," Tatalia had begun to say earlier. "They look like cat's paws, but there's strange trailing marks behind them, too. They also just... are spread out oddly on the ground. Perhaps some sort of magical beast?" Tatalia glanced over at Ulrich, shaking her head and standing up from the muddy ground, wiping her hands together to get the black stuff out from between her fingers. "I think some beasties are stalking our merchants, but they shouldn't be too difficult to handle. We'll probably even get a bonus if we help drive them off!"
Ten minutes later, Tatalia was eating her words. She and Ulrich stood on a hill overlooking the caravan, watching as a pack of displacer beasts - teleporting, tentacled, six legged felines - rushed about the hapless merchants. The heroes had arrived just a little too late to save everyone, as one merchant got dragged off and another got eaten right on the spot, torn to bits by three hungry displacer beasts. Tatalia felt like throwing up.
"Right! We need a plan," Tatalia muttered, thinking quickly as she said those words. The remaining merchants threw themselves into and onto their wagons, hiding from the monsters as best they could. Tatalia pinched her brow. Insight struck.
"Get their attention!" Tatalia commanded Ulrich, quickly dropping her backpack and removing several small magical devices from the pouches on her belt. "I'll set up an ambush; I just need you to bring the monsters towards us! And DON'T move in front of me!"
With that, Tatalia darted out in front of Ulrich, feet padding softly against the ground as she quickly set up her traps.
There wasn't time to get all her traps set up, so Tatalia went with the most basic. She planted a bead against the bark of a tree, pinched it, and watched as the enchanted bead drilled a hole into the tree. Tatalia then quickly inserted a thick, vicious dart inside the hole, pulled her hand away, and muttered a command word. The audible click that rose up told her the trap was set.2
Tatalia started reaching for the pouch containing her next trap when she realized her hand was sticking to the bark of the tree. She blinked, then looked back at her hand, realizing there was a bit of web clinging to her fingers. But there hadn't been web on the tree earlier...
That's when Tatalia realized the web was coming out of the underside of her wrist.
There were times to freak out and evaluate whatever was happening, but that time was not when displacer beasts were about to eat her, Tatalia decided. Having seen the web coming out of her body, Tatalia suddenly felt a muscle she hadn't felt before, and was able to release the web from her wrist. She laughed nervously, then found herself weaving the webbing into a nigh-invisible net,3 perfectly placed so that if anything tried to move through the spot she was in, it'd find itself caught in the webs.
Tatalia briefly wondered if she was experiencing some sort of weird second puberty, then promptly told her brain to SHUT UP.

"Understood," he replied to Tatalia as darted away to set her traps.
Wisps of wind started to gather and circle around him. He began to float upward into the air, angling himself towards the caravan, a blast of wind shot outward behind him. He launched through the air like a missile towards the caravan, slowing his speed as he approached.
It seemed as though the Displacer Beasts sensed him approaching— or maybe it was the subtle change in the air. He was using wind magic, of course. Who's to say that these beasts wouldn't be able to feel it. Their gazes turned to him as he circled above the caravan.
"Hello there!" Ulrich yelled down from above. He managed to gain their full attention, which was apparent by their snarls and growls.
"Now, I know these people seem tasty to you, but it just so happens that I've been tasked with keeping the rest of them alive!"
Some of the Displacer Beasts lowered their postures, readying to pounce at him.
"So, if you would kindly- WHOA!" Ulrich had barely managed to dodge one of the Displacer Beasts that teleported in front of him.
It wasn't long before the pack was now attacking him all at once, blinking in from every direction. He managed to recognize some of their attack patterns. As one of the beast teleported and lunged at him from the side, Ulrich quickly "teleported" upward out of it's trajectory. He threw his fist downward into the back of it's head with an audible WACK!
His attack connected, but being a bit inexperienced at dealing with Displacer Beasts, he'd forgotten to watch for the tails. He struck by on as the momentum of the beast shot downwards. It ripped through the fabric of his jacket and shirt sleeve underneath, drawing blood.
The beast collided with the ground with a boom. The others jumped out of the way of the small shock wave of dirt and debris generated by the impact. They looked up to Ulrich, anger in their eyes, and their noses wrinkled at the smell of the red liquid.
"Well, I think I'd say that I definitely have their undivided attention."

For a moment, it seemed that Tatalia had disappeared, nowhere to be seen. Somehow, the little goblin had just vanished, completely unheard1 and unseen.2 Ulrich was alone.
At least, he was alone floating in the air until the little goblin seemingly appeared out of thin air, dropping down from a tree and driving her sharp dagger into the head of the unfortunate Displacer Beast she landed on.
The blow was a ferocious one, enough to fell the creature immediately. Unfortunately, she was suddenly very near several very angry, very hungry teleporting tentacle panthers, and unlike Ulrich she was both very small and very much in reach. No teleporting was necessary to snatch her up. And so Tatalia exercised her most reliable tactic: running away.
The goblin made a mad dash away from the snapping jaws and raking claws of her pursuers. Two of the creatures gave chase while the remainder started climbing trees near Ulrich, clearly trying to find new ways to attack him besides just teleporting upward. One of the creatures teleported in front of the goblin, and she avoided becoming a snack by being ever-prepared: holding her dagger, the goblin shouted out, "Close your eyes!" And then her dagger flashed brightly, just as it had back in the arena.
The displacer beasts looking at Tatalia were all momentarily blinded. The teleporting one crashed onto the ground next to her, confused, and Tatalia darted past them. Still, they had a good sense of smell and hearing, so they gave chase... and ran right into the goblin's traps.
The teleporting displacer beast ran into her web, and it remained stuck in there since it had just used up its magic. The second rushed at the goblin and caught up to her, but not before getting shot with a dart in its side. It turned just briefly to find its new attacker, and as a reward got bludgeoned in the side of the face with a dagger pommel.
Neither of the two beasts was slain, but the tables had turned. It was Tatalia who was hunting them!

The Displacer Beasts were starting to use tactics now that they'd witnessed one of their own get pummeled out of the air. Tatalia had made her move, descending from the trees to catch another one off guard, and she'd run off with two beasts on her tail.
She'd yelled for him to shield his eyes, which he did abruptly. A flash had momentarily dazed the beasts, and she took the opportunity to lead them into her traps. Her resourcefulness was impeccable to say the least.
Ulrich wouldn't have time to finish his thoughts as more of the beasts snapped and clawed at him, hungering for the iron smell that traveled through the air. He weaved away from several of their attacks before he spotted a straggler making it's way towards the easier prey in the wagons.
"Oh no you don't."
He launched himself through the air straight for the Beast attempting to make a meal of the rest of the caravan. He landed a kick right into it's side with a sickening crunch of it's ribs. It rag dolled right into a tree, falling limp to the ground. That was another one of the pack down.
He landed gracefully and immediately assumed a defensive stance. The rest of the Displacer Beasts slowly marched back and forth in front of him in an arc. They were readying themselves to attack him with ferocity. He eyes narrowed, shooting them a look of challenge.
"Come on then. There's plenty of me to go around for you all."

Facing off against two displacer beasts with just a knife and no element of surprise was a daunting task, but Tatalia had a lot of practice fighting things she really wasn't supposed to while underequipped.
The goblin darted for the trapped feline first, knowing she would have the best opportunity to dispatch it while it was still trapped in the web. The moment it was able to teleport again, Tatalia's edge would be lost, so she had to act immediately. Unfortunately, the other displacer beast was still menacing her, so the goblin needed a distraction.
The free monster leapt, then teleported in the middle of its leap to catch the goblin by surprise! But she was expecting something like that; the moment it reappeared, Tatalia dug her gloved hand into a rock1 and threw her hand upward. Along its path formed a thin but solid wall of stone, just strong enough for the surprised to crack its muzzle upon. The beast crashed through the stone with a pained hiss and flailed uselessly as it sprawled upon the ground, and Tatalia was able to make it to the other, less mobile monster without further hindrance.
What followed was something resembling a prison shanking. Tatalia's dagger went in and out of the trapped displacer with several visceral and furious motions. It howled in rage, then in pain and fear, and then went still.
The other displacer beast, of course, was none too happy with what had just happened. It leapt once more, roaring vengefully as it spread its claws out, spiny tendrils ready to lash out... and Tatalia threw her dagger at it, planting the weapon right in its forehead.
The monster crashed into the goblin, sending her sprawling beneath its weight, but the two untangled moments later. Dirty and deeply scratched by the creature's claws, Tatalia considered the fact that she was breathing and it was not to be victory enough, and she staggered up to her feet, plucking her dagger back out of its skull.
"Ulrich!" the little rogue shouted. "I'm coming! Try not to die!"
And with that, Tatalia was rushing back toward the other adventurer's battleground, trying to find a good way to regain the element of surprise.
Abilities used: 1. Miner's Friends.

The Displacer Beasts hissed and roared at his challenge. One of the pack lunged at Ulrich, unable to contain itself any longer. Ulrich responded to its attack with a defensive move of his own. He spun on his feet, executing a spinning back kick to the beast's side. A crunch of bones could be heard as the Displacer Beast's trajectory suddenly shifted and it launched to the side.
Using the momentum, Ulrich spun until he faced the pack again, revealing that he had been charging a lightning within his fingers at the same time. The Displacer Beasts looked from their fallen pack member back to Ulrich, and their eyes grew wide. Some were able to teleport to safety, but one unlucky beast could not react fast enough.
As soon as Ulrich's foot landed regaining his footing, he pointed his fingers straight at the unlucky Displacer Beast. A beam of lightning quickly struck the beast1, shocking it until it fell limp where it stood.
Ulrich took the opportunity of their confusion and dashed forward. He began to step into the air as if there were stairs under his feet.2 Leaping into the air now, he angled himself towards another beast with his hands pointed into the air, opposite in direction to his target. A blast of air3 launched him forward, and he delivered a crushing kick to another beast's skull— driving it into the ground.
He did not have time to prepare for another attack though, as he was tackled to the ground by one of the beasts. The two tumbled on the ground, and unfortunately, Ulrich had been pinned to the ground by the beast. He held it back by the neck as it's jaws snapped and it's claws jabbed for his face.
"Gah! Yeah, I'm tr— I'm trying not to!" He yelled back in response to Tatalia.
He managed to kick the beast off of him. It flew the air behind him before it teleported itself to the ground.
He rolled away to safety, ending up on one knee, panting to catch his breath. Dealing with a pack of Displacer Beasts was proving to be a bit difficult. However, he thought he was doing well for his first time— probably.

Perhaps there were worse things to fight than displacer beasts, but Tatalia was really starting to hate them. Their erratic movements, their weird angles of attack, and their incredible evasiveness made them an absolute headache to fight. Tatalia felt dizzy just running in a straight line back toward Ulrich mostly because she could already imagine the ferocious felines fizzling out of existence only to reappear behind her. It was like seasickness all over again!
But... Tatalia did have the advantage of being the one in an ambush position. Ulrich clearly was still recovering from some attack, and the displacer beast that he had been watching teleported away again, probably preparing to make a new move from some new, hidden location. Finding it was a difficult matter... but not for Tatalia, whose keen perceptive skills1 told her exactly where the displacer beast was.
The creature was skulking behind a set of bushes. Pointing it out to Ulrich would've been easy enough, but Tatalia knew better than to do that; she'd give away her own position and the creature would probably just teleport away immediately. No, no; it was better to wait for the beast to make its move. So Tatalia crept on forth between the trees, staying low and getting closer and closer to Ulrich, the better to assist him when the monster made its move.
And so it did. The creature blinked out of existence, then reappeared above Ulrich, preparing to pounce upon him! But Tatalia was quicker than it was, and she waved her dagger upward, releasing a flash of brilliant light2, just as before! The once coordinated strike from the murder-cat turned into an undignified crash down onto the ground next to Ulrich.
The unlucky creature was promptly stabbed to death as Tatalia once again reenacted a prison murder in the woods.
The tired, weary goblin slipped her bloody dagger free of the big feline as it shuddered and then went still. She cast a lopsided smile up at Ulrich, doing her best to ignore the wet, red splatters on her face.
"That wasn't so bad, was it?" Tatalia asked with faux aplomb.

A long breath of exertion escaped him. His gaze fell down to the ground below, and he laughed.
"I suppose it wasn't, Tatalia! I guess I'll be better prepared the next time I find myself taking these things on— hopefully."
He took a quick look over his wounds. None of it was too grave for him. Nothing he wasn't used to with his nine years of experience out in the world. Taking on giant murder-cats though— He was a bit surprised to even come out of this situation as well kept together as he currently was!
He looked at their surroundings noticing that the attacks had stopped after his companion's sneak attack.
"It would seem that we've taken the pack out, right?" He said through a tired breath.
He slowly got up to his feet, dusting himself off a bit. His gaze traveled to the wagon that the merchants sought refuge in. It was left with rips and scratches from the claws of the Displacer Beasts. The beasts had left the wagon after Ulrich had managed to grab their attentions.
The sounds of the merchants could be heard as the wagon stirred. A sinking feeling hit him as a gale of wind passed through the both of them. A worried look in his eyes as he looked towards the sky in a sort of acknowledgment.
"Come on, Tatalia. I have a bad feeling about this."
