Rays of sunlight sprinkled through the canopy above, bathing the world beneathe in a faint shimmering luster that left it in a seemingly permenant state of twilight. Two young elven children played in and around several puddles left from a recent rain, oblivous to the hustle and bustle of the port only a stone's throw from them. Veran sat quietly on a bench magically formed from the roots of the tree whose leaves sheltered him from the bright light of the midday sun, content to watch the children play. On days like today with no clouds and the moisture from the ocean in the air the light of the sun seemed too bright to bear comfortably, somehow managing to hurt the paladin turned undead skeleton's "eyes" despite not physically having any.
The peace of the day was broken as the sounds of commotion approached, shortly followed by the appearance of gaurds escorting several prisoners all of whom save for one were struggling in their restraints. The sole prisoner not struggling acted as if he was trying to shrink and hide as much as possible despite being in the midst of this group of gaurds and prisoners. Not paying it much mind, Verna turned his skeletal head hidden by his weathered brown cloak back towards the children, content to spend his day watching such innocence experience happiness while at play. A gentle sea breeze ambled through, tickling at everyone's clothes, belying the peace that was about to be broken.
One of the prisoners started to jerk on his restraints, forcing the gaurds to have to turn to deal with him. While they were distracted, the one prisoner that had been trying not to draw attention to himself suddenly darted forward and snatched the sidearm from a gaurd before quickly plunging it into said gaurds side through gaps in his armor. The group exploded into a frenzy as the prisoners sprung into action, sensing freedom being potentially close at hand. One other prisoner, a large, burly and hairy type, freed himself from the group and rushed the elven children playing nearby, of which only one was quick enough to avoid capture; subsequently the other was quick to become a hostage as the prisoner began dragging the child away, running away with his bargaining chip should he need one.
This all happened in just a matter of seconds, as the situation absolutely devolved into a chaotic brawl and none of the gaurds seemed to notice the large prisoner with the hostage. Veran had sprung to his feet as all of this had started, and he moved to pursue the kidnapper, his progress slowed and hampered by having to try to maneuver around the rest of the group to get to them. Another prisoner jumped directly in Veran way, presumably thingking that Veran was someone else that could be used as a hostage. Or maybe not, as he attempted to plunge one of the gaurds' swords into Veran's gut; would have to, if Veran had any to stab. Taking advantage of the confusion his asssailant was experiencing, Veran grabbed the man by his wrist and swung his club in an upwards arch, uppercutting the prisoner square on the bottom of their chin, teeth audibly clacking as he lost his grip to consciousness. Letting go of the man Veran tried to finish pushing past the group to try to save the elven child being kidnapped, but the group continued to hamper his progress as the escapee continued to escape with his hostage.
