Humble Beginnings talesofcharon.proboards.com/post/3048/thread
Looting Mr. Chag's residence was unfruitful. Only remaining valuables were two forks and a spoon. But lucky: found two seemingly capable mercenaries. Adventurers? What's the polite term for them nowadays? Irrelevant. Will create dossiers. Convinced them to escort me to Gazablaak. Hopefully Ray will not be overly impeded by his injury. Much to carry: reagents and arrowheads would likely be the most easily bartered supplies. Will depart at dawn. No wagon. No horse. Won't travel well in the Marsh Flats. Much to do. If rumours are correct, the spirit could be the key.
Time is Money talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/883/time-money-private-closed
Trouble. Ran into a band of gnolls on the road. Leader (old electromancer named Yettz) was drugging subordinates to improve their productivity. ||||| claims the drug is otherworldly. Gnolls' actual operation unknown. Definitely small-time. Doesn't matter. Employees dealt with it easily. Took the drugs and two gnolls. Real problem: woke up in the morning, one vial of drug gone, rest neutralized. Both employees possible suspects. Shouldn't be too difficult to find out which was responsible. No confrontation until the job is done. That way, they won't realize that they're working for free.

Grabbing some Grub (the good kind) talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/999/grabbing-grub-good-kind-open?page=2&scrollTo=4538
Went to the "Safe Dry Sleep Eat Spot" in Gazablaak. Terrible name. Terrible food. Wouldn't be popular if there were any other options. Would open something there, but residents don't seem terribly wealthy. Met two interesting individuals there: Elquel Nosvlad, a "healer" and "traveler" that may or may not be a vampire; and Tatalia, an "explorer" and "scholar," but clearly a rogue. Couldn't tell much about the former. Latter obviously wanted business. She got offended when I refused. May've said too much; ran out of water. They pointed me to a shop where I can get new boots. Conversation implies future interactions. Not enough info yet to write dossiers.
Dead Men DO Tell Tales talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1056/dead-men-tell-tales-private?page=3&scrollTo=5514
Found and investigated a lead on the narcotic detailed in the Time is Money report. Heard a rumour from the cobbler that some mysterious folks sold a very similar substance to a lizardfolk tribe known as the 'Bloody Axes.' I went to their camp to see if I could haggle it from them. I could not. They put me in a cage. Fortunately, there was an unfortunate accident, and I was able to escape with the drugs.
Saw Elquel and Tatalia again, as well as some unusual, fuzzy creature named Hyllspickle. I think I have enough information now to create dossiers on the first two. Tatalia asked if I wanted to "talk" at the Sleep Dry Safe Place Eat Sleep Spot whatever it's called. I can't tell if she wants to talk business or something more personal, and I can't tell which I dread more. Still, worth following up on. Could get more information.
A Friendly Chat with Zero Shenanigans talesofcharon.proboards.com/threads/recent/1234
Success. I think. Blurry memories. But good memories. beneficial business opportunities. I hate alcohol. Never again. Maybe again. Undecided. Spoke with Tatalia about mundane, nondescript events that do not warrant mention here. Segued into a chat on the societal insustainability of adventuring as a concept. Started drinking with her. She saw what I was saying. She understood why things need to change. She's the only first person I've met who really believes in *heavily scribbled text* my plan. This could be the beginning of something. Above all, I need loyalty. Have I found it? Will have to see.
Swamp Fever talesofcharon.proboards.com/post/4152/thread
Got back to Thunderhoof. Finally. Mission partly successful: one third of the product was destroyed in an explosion. Explanation is warranted: encountered a group of mercenaries working under some sort of cult. Both ||||| and Ray were aware of the cult. History. |||| talked about something called a "Sol Stone." Might be worth looking into; found an encoded book that might act as a sort of communication system for the cultists. Was able to fend off the cultists, but they were a small threat compared to a strange creature that they created(?) with a potion. Looked like a combination of a fish, a man and a fruitfly. It beat both ||||| and Ray up badly, but Ray managed to blow it up with an explosive that the cultists had. Problem solved, but, as noted, we lost a third of our product. Substantial profit loss, but that no longer matters. Confronted ||||| and Ray. ||||| was the culprit, but Ray wasn't happy. He stormed off, but also said he was going to Skypeak Village (somewhere). Will need to follow up and ask him about some things. Conclusion: mercenaries are unreliable. Might see that inventor in Sol City.
Crag Over Troubled Water talesofcharon.proboards.com/post/3896/thread
Captured a water elemental with the help of two mercenaries named Cantio and Ulrich. Will add dossiers. Nothing more need be said.
It Lives talesofcharon.proboards.com/threads/recent/1364
Exceedingly bad morning. Woke up to a report that a new, top-secret Blixt™ flavour had somehow been stolen by a living slime. As if that wasn't enough, the bots malfunctioned, sending false pings of the research team as if they were bots. One of them was killed on the spot, while another was "repaired." Needless to say, the repair pods are not built for living beings. Dead. Third one vanished. No trace. Might've been killed by the slime-thing. Had the bots destroyed. Will need to report that to the gnome.
Slime escaped in a crate of Blixt™. Whoever opens that is dead.
Ambushed from Shadows talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1356/complete-ambushed-shadows-renown-merchants
Encountered Leni-Aura and her caravan in Moonveil. They were under attack from a pride blur blink pack of displacer beasts. We assisted her in driving them off, also aided by a strange girl named Vaera, who had her arm broken during the conflict. While we were successful, and while there were no organic casualties, one of the merchants (named Orym) was abducted. Rescue operation pending.
Into the Jaws of the Beast talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1420/private-jaws-beast-renown-merchants
Successfully rescued Orym from the displacer beasts' den. Fortunately, there was only one of them remaining to resist us. Unfortunately, it was the alpha (or whatever they're called). Shockingly intelligent for an animal, and even capable of wielding a degree of magic: a difficult opponent. Destroyed most of my bots, but we won, and there were no organic casualties.
Bottled Moonlight talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1450/bottled-moonlight-private?page=1&scrollTo=6923
Travelled to Moonglade in search of the fabled moonlight lily. Not entirely successful, but did find something far more valuable: a connection correspondence with a strange ordinary strangely ordinary witch named Kamille. She agreed to procure some samples of moonlight lily on my behalf in exchange for a brief service involving a troll and a reagent in Zeinav. Shouldn't be too difficult. Visited the witch in her shack. Unbeknownst to me, the rickety exterior hid a gorgeous foyer, like what you'd see in a miser's mansion in Sol. Became quickly clear that this was no ordinary witch; our conversations indicated that she has connections to nobility in Sol City. Further conversations also led to my business and, as a consequence, my mission. She was shockingly open to my ideas, though did disagree at times. Overall, the mission was a resounding success.
Moonlit Fright talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1514/moonlit-fright-campfire-story
Hell of a night.
Note to self: add Zarius to the bots' blacklist.
Cave in, cave out talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1833/cave-out-renown-closed?page=2&scrollTo=14015
Investigated the sudden loss of contact with the Dragon's Spine mining operation. They were trapped by a nest of burrowing kruthiks. Unfortunately, I also became trapped. Remained so for approximately 4 hours until the unexpected arrival of Zarius and Astrid. Apparently, Astrid wanted to investigate the reports and Zarius was just okay with that. Note: do not hire Zarius as a babysitter. Astrid is shockingly talented, both in combat and technology. She was able to create a hand-drill using only improvised parts scattered around the mine, and survived against a swarm of enemies that destroyed most of my bots. But the fact remains: she's far more valuable as an engineer than an adventurer. Not to mention that she's a child. Will need to find someone to take proper care of her.
Of Tricks and Treats talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1792/tricks-treats-private-black-harvest?page=3&scrollTo=12049
Caedes and Zarius??? Caedes and Zarius??? I never would have guessed, but evidence points toward hidden feelings. Kamille thinks so, too; I met her at the Marrowvanes' Ball, and we agreed investigate. Could be useful. For blackmail. Research. Mission was partially successful. Prospects seemed grim for a moment, but we otherwise succeeded in ||||||| |||| |||||||. Chances of ||||: ||%. Also spoke more with Kamille. She confirmed the rumours; she has ties to the court and, therefor, nobility. Also talked about more personal things. That's good; I think she's starting to trust me. Shouldn't have given away that much, though, it was uncharacteristically reckless of me. Something she said has been bothering me. Can't stop thinking about it. Distracting. Is this some sort of curse?
The Most Dangerous Game talesofcharon.proboards.com/thread/1846/most-dangerous-game-black-harvest
Played Truth or Dare at the Marrowvane Ball. Mostly underwhelming, but had a shocking development: Astrid dared Cantio to be her father and *he accepted*. Granted, the nature of the game demanded he accept, but it was shocking nonetheless. If he's serious, it could solve many problems relating to Astrid's safety and security. But really? Cantio? He can barely take care of himself. Then again, maybe that's exactly what Astrid needs. If someone tried to protect her, she'd just squirm and run away. But giving her someone for *her* to protect could give her an anchor, something to dissuade her from unsafe behaviour. Maybe. Will need to see. If it doesn't work, might need to have Cantio ||||||. Either way, they'll need someplace to stay. Have an idea. Expensive idea, but potentially lucrative. Math adds up. Will start immediately. One week.

Dossiers
-Astrid Stormstone: Half-blood of dwarven/? descent. Excellent fighter. Peerless electromancer. Prodigal smith and artificer. Little known history: neglectful dwarven mother, unknown father. Abandoned for unknown reasons, developed her talents on the streets, self-taught. Highly optimistic, but not free from insecurity and other symptoms of her age. Currently under the care of Cantio von Lumen (see dossier). Employee Rating: Platinum. While her combat potential (artillery and shock) are incredible for her age, her true value lies in her genius-level talent in metallurgy, artifice, armorsmithing and clockwork; all of which promise to become even more potent as she grows and matures. Her dedication is unshakable, her passion is admirable, she's surprisingly competent under stress, and her drive is exemplary. Despite her age, she has some of the most potential of any adventurer I've ever met. ||| ||| |||| |||||| she needs to be protected.
-|||||: [Redacted]
-Cantio von Lumen (Alias; actual name is Melos Duralli-Casthos): Tiefling. Bard. Healer. Excellent support capabilities. Personal accounts of his history are mostly falsehoods; actually comes from the Duralli-Casthos family of Sol City. Early career rife with catastrophic musical performances. Vanished at 18, leaving only a letter. Outwardly confident appearance hides a deep-seated fear of expectation, likely due to his negative relationship with his parents. Hopefully he doesn't take after them, as he's been put in charge of Astrid Stormstone (see dossier) as guardian. Employee Rating: Gold. Excellent magical capabilities could make him an exemplary employee, both in and out of battle, and insecurities can be manipulated for obedience. However, past disregard for his parents' wishes indicates a degree of rebelliousness.
-Cyran (formerly of Fenestra): Elf. Assassin. Shadowmancer. Lethal talents make it no wonder that he works as a hitman, and his nigh-undetectability has earned him the moniker of 'The Spectre.' His reputation precedes him, but what it doesn't precede is an empathy for the few that he cares about, as well as a specific sympathy for orphans and other downtrodden youths (as evidenced by that he owns an orphanage, called Shade's Valley Orphanage, in Darkveil). This seemingly uncharacteristic tenderness might arise from his past, as he was disowned by the Fenestra line following a violent dissolution of a political marriage of which he was a part (wife, Rowan, was killed in mysterious circumstances; son, Marlow, further raised by the Fenestras). The details of the conflict have been largely swept under the rug; it is generally accepted that Cyran killed Rowan, though disparate sources can't agree on whether it was self-defense or outright murder. Further investigation pending. Employee Rating: Gold. Talented and reliable, excelling in the fields in which he specializes. An effective operative, capable of performing flawlessly in a wide range of operations. However, familial connections (orphanage and apparent adoptive relations with an infeasible number of adolescents) might make his loyalty difficult to keep.
-Elquel Nosvlad: Possible vampire. Healer. Strong light magic; I've seen him bring the dead back to life. Thorough research revealed no history. Motivations unknown. Employee Rating: Unknown. Powerful healer and obvious asset, but unknown motivations.
-Gerhart Stanislav: Human. Talented Spellblade. Affluent combatant. Refugee from a Moonglade village that was destroyed by a werewolf massacre. Arrived in Eclipse City, where he was adopted by a bard called Arkmir Kymenos. Became a talented fighter over time, eventually taking on the role of an adventurer. Exact motivations are unknown, but his psychological profile indicates that they are probably not complex. Employee Rating: Gold. Talented and dependable, and seemingly selfless motivations can be easily directed.
-|||||/||||: [Redacted]
-Kamille, The Witch of Moonglade: Half-Elf. Witch. Spymaster. Widely considered to be one of the most powerful mages in Charon, with a particular love for the more dangerous and destructive spells. Despite this, she can be surprisingly discreet; daughter of Benethuil (former court wizard), Kamille is intimately familiar with the functions of royalty and aristocracy. When her father allegedly went insane, she was placed under the tutelage of the new court wizard, Valatar. Proved her talent for subterfuge when she solved the murder of a council member, but was still mostly used as a secretary. Today, she's become mostly detached from her place in court, instead having settled in Moonglade. Motivations are largely unknown; she's established connections, and assembled a small team of agents, but it's unclear why. Investigation pending. Employee Rating: Electrum. Magical capability is beyond compare, but also potentially beyond control. Motivations are unknown, and both her honesty and loyalty are uncertain. But I've shared part of my plans with her. She was hesitant, but supportive: a good reaction. Further evaluation pending.
-Kosoku "Socket" Hiraishin: Construct from an unknown region of the universe. Advanced beyond anything Charon has seen (design is several hundred times more complex than that of the Blixtbots™, and is capable of significantly more complex cognition (apparently including emotion)). Systems are capable of harnessing substantial amounts of mana into aeromantic and electromantic spells. Advanced design warrants study, but the construct's motivations are currently unknown. Employee Rating: Unknown. Capable mage, but unknown motivations.
-Leni-Aura Thunderpaw: Rabbitaur. Excellent spearwoman despite her diminution. Electromancer. Raised in the Thunderpaw Warren in Dragon's Cradle. Born unusually small for her kind, earning her the disdain of her father and much of her tribe. Her deformity was considered a sign of weakness in a largely war and survival-centric culture, making her a pariah. Exiled for failing to meet her teachers' standards, but managed to survive until she was found by a merchant caravan. Employee Rating: Electrum. Excellent warrior and capable mage, but she possesses an obsession with self-betterment that would be difficult to align with Platinum Corp's goals and could make her unruly.
-Ray Castien: Half-elf. Peerless Swordsman. Powerful Light mage (healing specialization, possible additional powers). History of banditry that ended with apparent religious conversion. Missing right arm. Whatever the opposite of a ne'er-do-well is. Worships deity called The Traveler, and gets power from a connection to a benevolent celestial entity called Qilin. Motivated by sense of virtue a need for redemption. Employee Rating: Silver. Talented spell blade, but religion makes him dogmatic. Effective, but disobedient.
-Sarris Olaric: Half-elf. Thief. Druid. Talented, but often overconfident and brash, owing to her age. Largely unknown history, except that she was born out of wedlock between the sun-elven Lady Ellarian Presrona and a human dockworker. Now apparently resides in the Gray Citadel, despite her job usually entailing some form of criminal activity. Employee Rating: Electrum. Talented, but brash and rebellious. Latter traits might be effaced as she matures.
-Shaa Rhuun: Minotaur. Terrifying hand-to-hand combatant. Shockingly apt strategist. Able terramancer. Raised by centaurs (true birthplace and parents unknown). Employee Rating: Platinum. Brute strength tempered by tactical wit, quick reflexes and powerful earth-magic, but requires additional magic support in order to combat esoteric threats (see report: Dropping In). This isn't a downside; I can lend that assistance.
-Sylva: Unknown species (refers to herself as 'y'livien orn,' apparently a sentient plant with a humanoid body and vaguely elven features, and is ancient). History and capabilities are all unknown. What is known about her can be condensed into three points: 1) She acts as an emissary for the Hauntwood, which is apparently sentient in its own rite; 2) Her home (and possibly she) is afflicted with a currently undiagnosed illness, possibly a curse, that appears terminal; and 3) She knows almost nothing about the world outside the Haunt, to the degree that she had to be taught how to order food at a cafe. Employee Rating: Unknown. Connections to the apparently sapient Hauntwood could make her a powerful ally, but what such an alliance would entail (and Sylva's own capabilities) are currently unknown.
-Tatalia: Goblin. Rogue. Peerless stealth abilities. Canny business mind. As a child, was sold by adventurers to a baron, who treated her as a slave. Slightly greedy and greatly passionate for history. Employee Rating: Platinum. Exemplary adventurer and cunning in mercantile. Believes in my cause and has agreed to help. Exactly the kind of person I want for my mission. All that's left is to commit her fully to my cause.
-Ulrich Ambriz: Human. Catastrophically powerful electromancer and peerless hand-to-hand fighter. Mother was a warrior, father was a painter and part-time explorer. Teachings from both combined to create a prodigal adventurer. Trained in both unarmed combat and sky magic by an unknown warrior from Starlight City. Laid-back, decent people-person. Employee Rating: Gold. Exemplary combat capabilities, but predilection for adventure could dissuade him from working consistently. Still, if he can be convinced of my plan, he can be a powerful ally.
-Vaera: Human. Able hand-to-hand combatant. Mage (space domain specialization). Bent on revenge for the destruction of her nomadic tribe. Employee Rating: Gold. Able fighter, and vengeful drive can be easily manipulated.
-Xalmann Dakarr: Lizardman. Capable pyromancer. Decent warrior. Came from a tribe called the Bloody Axes that was destroyed under mysterious circumstances. Obsessed with his mission to kill an otherworldly entity referred to as 'Dagon.' Employee Rating: Gold. All-around capable fighter and motivations can be easily manipulated.
-Zarius Rha'Oriyn: Tiefling. Excellent hand-to-hand combatant. Decent medic. Proficient liar. Works as an assistant for a researcher in Zeinav. Apparent story is mostly fabricated. Comes from an Ashlands syndic family, and appears intent on continuing the tradition. Employee Rating: Copper. Excellent fighter and tactician, but selfish ambitions make him utterly inviable for my mission. Additionally, he's shown himself to be capable of deceiving the bots' processing and protocols. I've added him to the blacklist, but he should still interact with them as little as possible, a recommendation which would be understandably difficult to abide if he worked for me. Not happening.
