Marion had became- or at least, consider himself to become- much more used to the adventuring lifestyle, taking up odd jobs here and there, everything from delivering messages, searching for cats, to... well, this. Looking at the information that had been given to him- and the list of possible monstrosities that the fae may turn into- Marion began worrying if he had bitten off something quite out of his league with this.
But, then again, it is something that needed to be taken care of, urgently- and Marion was not that sort to sit and watch, not if he have the ability to help it in any way. The fae had proven itself to be horrendously malicious- even if himself usually would like to put conversation before violence, but... given that this creature have already had several murders under it's name, preying on travelers near the social hotspot that is the Oasis- even someone like Marion knew. Sometimes, the more pacifist approach is simply not an option.
There were only two of them for this mission- Marion signed himself up for it with the thought of his own ability to resurrect people in mind, that even if- unfortunately enough- his teammate died to the creature, he would be able to bring them back and be able to flee and re-group. That was the worst case scenario anyway, and Marion contemplated if he should say that to his companion's face- and thought, oh, he should introduce himself first, and then get to the it-you-die part.
"It seems like we would be working together for this time- my name is Marion Aurea, and hope is we would be able to resolve this- with minimal casualties."
The young elf held out a hand to shake, the other cradling his large staff of living wood, almost two heads taller than himself- a clear spellcaster, and his clothes were light. No armor.

It had been over a year since Taki had traveled last without her companions, so she was grateful for the wonderful gear she'd crafted. While it did little to quicken her travel, it at least kept her cool and hydrated across the arid, baking sands of Zeinav. The last several weeks had been a whirlwind of learning, training, and trying to push through the oddness. It took time, but she was getting used to new ways of tackling problems.
A dusty breeze drove sand from one side of the dunes, tumbling down the other in plumes. Taking a moment to stretch at the crest of a larger mound, Taki used large landmarks to ensure her route. Relying on the sun overhead or the local landscape would get you lost in the sands, if you weren't careful and knowledgable. Still, according to the message she received, there would be another adventurer en route.
Sure steps, patience, and a little effort saw the Oasis come into view over the tops of low dunes. A burst of greens, browns, blues and other vibrant colors on a mostly uniform background of earthy tans, it rose up like a shimmering mirage. There was no trick, no heat distortion, just the sights, sounds and smells of life defying the desert's harsh climate. A part of her wanted to shift her outfit to a lighter, more mobile one and go dashing down the dunes. While not the soft silty river banks, or teeming shores of the Isles, the scene had a certain nostalgia.
Chuckling to herself as she strolled down towards the lush banks of the Oasis, Taki could only wonder what their adventuring partner would think. Probably not much, she had on a robe similar to many of the nomadic tribes. Over this was a cloak of pattern woven silks, and clasped with a delicately carved stone broach. When she finally reached flatter ground, the Orochi got her first look at the mentioned adventurer. Not much taller than herself, the seemingly young elf stood comfortably with a large wooden staff in one arm as she approached.
"It seems like we would be working together for this time- my name is Marion Aurea, and hope is we would be able to resolve this- with minimal casualties."
The young lad stepped forward, offering a hand with a measure of confidence. It seemed she would be in good company for this occasion, so she figured she could introduce herself properly. Brushing her cloak back with one hand, Taki's outfit seemed to twist and coil about until the traveling robe had become something akin to a form fitting dancer's outfit. She took the proffered hand with one of her own three clawed hands and shook it, her prehensile tail uncoiling from about her waist to sway behind her slowly.
"A warm day to you as well Marion, I am Shitakibo. Taki, if you prefer. Resolving this situation as gently as possible is always a valid and relatable goal, hopefully we can achieve it. Have you done any scouting yet or seen signs of our mysterious friend?"

"To be honest... I do not have much experience in combat." Marion admitted thus, and quickly added.
"I am more focused on recovery spells- healing, cleansing poison, reviving, stuff like that. I've had Kweh do a fly-around to see if he could spot anything- the material given did say it should be near this area, at least, from the past patterns it had exhibited."
To be honest- the other's outfit fascinated him, and Marion looked on, quite amazed, as the fabric reshaped itself into a different fashion- is it an enchantment? What kind of magic is it? He would love to ask- and if it was under normal circumstances, the little elf would have. But this is serious business, he told himself, and it's very dangerous- it won't do to get distracted.
Above head the sunbeams shimmerd into a brilliant gold- and Marion looked up to wave the dragoonfly over, it's wings filtering light and tainting it his own colour like stained glass. The mothish creature landed a whiles off, and you saw Marion do a little trotting run towards it and the two seemed to have some kind of silent conversation between themselves, Kweh waving it's feathery antennae in certain manners, and Marion gesturing with his hands. He turned back to look at the other, and gave a smile- even if you could see how he was quite nervous, he looks to you with wholehearted trust already.
"He'd seen it. Something that is possibly it, at least- I don't think Cephaloclopses are common in this area?"

"No, no they are not... that would indeed be a fine starting place. The magics you speak of are familiar to me, though I am no longer a practitioner. I have seen my fair share of unsavory situations though, so if things get tough find some cover and keep your head down. Healing will likely be handy, but mind your position and try not to be out in the open when you're casting."
With her outfit in order, Taki gave herself one last gear check and took a swig of cool fresh water from a length of bamboo fashioned into a sealable container. It had a short spout and a smaller piece of solid bamboo carved down to a taper for a tight seal. Still about half full, she tucked the container away and walked over to Marion and their unusual mount. While she no longer could readily bond with such creatures, the Orochi could appreciate a caring and responsible caretaker.
"If it's not too much strain on your partner, perhaps the pair of you could keep overhead for this and help me track it if the dust starts flying?"
She posed the question for two reasons, the obvious being mobility, the other being slightly less so. Taki had spent the last several weeks training her body all over again, learning new skills, and how to move forward after she'd made a huge mistake. There had been no easy days, or answers, but she struggled on to the end. Despite this, she hadn't had a lot of experience fighting in groups since that training, and didn't want to endanger anyone recklessly. Hopefully, whatever this being was, they could have a civilized conversation instead of tearing into each other. It doesn't end well for either side, and Taki had seen enough tense stand offs.

"Mhn! It won't be a problem."
Having someone that have experience in these fields alongside- this offers much more reassurance. Marion wondered briefly what prompted the choice to change practice- but that curiosity, also, would be better suited in a later time.
"He can also spit amber to trap- I think we would be able to keep it from getting too far!"
Climbing ontop of the Dragoonfly, Marion gave the fur on it's back a little ruffle. Despite all the fur, it does considerably well in the sun, being cold-blooded and quite large in size- the boost in temperature helps it be much more active, with the addition of needing more food to sustain, of course.
"We'll guide you to it, now- you only need to follow the shadow he casts on the ground. And- " The elf seemed abit hesitant, but he seemed to decide to say it anyway.
"- I've got you. So, please go ahead with courage too- if you fall, we'll be there to catch you."
With that, the clear, gold-veined wings of the moth beat down, raising the sand around as it took off- and the bright shadow was cast upon the sands once more like a mosaic of light, gliding over the dunes.
——————————————————
It was not very far, but thankfully still a distance from the settlement around the Oasis that was not alarmingly close- and as Marion had classified, this current form of... a sphere of many eyes is exactly what it says on the tin. While with it's many eyes, it being able to spot the rather eye-catching colours of the Dragoonfly was mostly certain, but it did not seem interested enough in the creature to make any moves against it at the moment.

Taki nodded to the young elf, acknowledging their words as the mount ascended. As the pair turned and headed toward the creature in question, she followed from the ground. She raced across the sand, silently gliding over the shifting ground in the shadow 1 of Marion's mount. Even from his vantage above, the Orochi would be difficult to discern from the shadow speeding below. A few minutes later, rounding the Oasis' outskirts, they came upon the strange creature. A roughly spherical mass of leathery flesh with ten wriggling appendage. Each one ended in a bulbous, darting eye that could fire dangerous beams of magic. The main body had a singular, large eye and a wide, jagged toothed mouth as it hovered along above the ground. As Marion and Kweh continued, Taki stepped out of the speedy mount's shadow at the top of a small dune within sight. The sudden appearance caught it's attention, and it turned towards Taki while tracking her with it's many eye stalks. She faced it, two hands folded and resting against her waist while the other two were out to her sides with empty hands. "Good day to you, might you be inclined to have a conversation?" She did her best to use a pleasant and calm voice, though her own accent and annunciations muddled it. While she held her ground, there was a subtle tension in her body, ready to spring into action if it decided to turn hostile.
1: Pass without a Trace The shadow dancer has learned to completely conceal themselves while hidden, becoming one with the very shadows. While under the effects of a hiding spell or ability, or while concealed in a shadow, you can no longer be detected by any some of the mortal senses. You cannot be smelled or heard, preventing people with increased senses to detect you. For as long as you are concealed they can only find you by physically detecting you or removing you from the shadow. Your tracks also no longer exist, leaving no foot prints or indentations in the ground.

The large, dribbling mouth of the beholder only stretched into a very needly-teethy grin- too teethy, really, and it's form shimmered- rapidly changing and shifting as it pounced, and you can see how it morphed like liquid, eye moving to the front as it became a demon-shape, and then elongated into the lithe form of a Ziev's Sphinx. It is apparent how this creature only has the notion of toying with it's prey- there is a look of cruel glee in the sphinx's humanoid face, as it descended on you finally with claws extended to swipe.
Marion, circling above head upon Kweh and spotting the fae take offence, ushered the mount to dive down- and as soon as the are close enough for the dragoonfly to be able to take reliable aim, a glob of amber honey was spat out towards the creature. if it landed, then the goo would be able to trap the fae in it- for a little while, at least. Regardless of if the hit landed, the pair pulled up back into the air to avoid being targeted immediately- while fae are reputed to hold their grudges, Marion reasoned that they would still be distracted by people closer to themselves rather than ones that are out of sight... and possibly harder to get to. ———————————————————————————————————————— 1. spitting (Kweh) The Dragoonfly is able to spit a sticky substance similar to honey within a five foot radius, trapping anyone standing within it for one post

Watching the creature shift into a new form suited Taki's plans just fine. It charged without heed, a devious and cloying grin on it's elongated features. A huge claw came swinging down at the Orochi, who seemed to float across the sands like some ethereal stage. She weaved and tumbled1 as the shifting creature continued it's onslaught, swiping and biting in as many ways as it's form could. Above, Kweh's shot is much easier to make as the now-Sphinx was occupied with it's assault.
The gooey substance plopped heavily across the creature's 'tail', who slapped it against the ground. As the glimmering slime adhered, it held firm against heavy protest. That gave Taki the moment's reprieve she needed to respond to it's lack of communication, reaching into a pouch for a pair of new... tools. The first looked to be some form of hoof knife, with a metal ring for a handle. The second was a Kama, with a length of rope and a cylindrical weight attached. Before she'd readied the second weapon, the dancer spun on her heel with her arms tucked close. As she came around in the creature's direction, her arms snapped out like whips and threw the ringed blade2. One blade became four as it was leaving her hand, whirling through the air on an arcing path in an attempt to slice across the now-Sphinx's shoulder.
Changing again, the creature takes on a malevolent and demonic appearance. It's shadowy form shifted between solid and intangible, as a skull like visage turned toward it's partly adhered body and let out a menacing, grating roar as Taki's blade went spinning by. She recognized it loosely from books and stories as an Incarnation of Fear, though most were treated as the rantings of the craven and unwell.

Marion had little information on the elusive demon, and Kweh once again dived for a hit with its amber, but he did not account for the fae in the form can teleport- and that was it’s intention in the first place to escape the amber that had trapped it. The demon made a leering face as the amber missed it this time and laughed- it did attempt to target Marion this time with it’s ability to induce fear, but the golden laurels in his hair disperses the curse before it could touch him.
The elf thought to himself that it was incredibly lucky- as he quickly climbed altitude and returned to the air, now that the fae had taken note of him. But it proved to be more of a throwaway move for it, and seeing them fly off had assumed they have already been frightened, thus turning attention to the other one once again. it does seem to be the sort that resembles a cat, simply enjoying the sensation of flesh and bone breaking under it’s strength and hearing those screams- as it turned once again into another form to make a lunge. This time-as a full red dragon. ————————————————— 1. spitting (Kweh) The Dragoonfly is able to spit a sticky substance similar to honey within a five foot radius, trapping anyone standing within it for one

The spinning shuriken returned to Taki's hand, Marion's second pass distracting the creature once again. With a quick motion, she returned it to the pouch and retrieved a short bamboo cane in it's place. When the now-Demon teleported away from Kweh's second strike, the dancer launched the weighted end of her Kusarigama1 as it spun. The weapon seemed to fade in and out of sight, leaving a trail of after images that made it difficult to defend against.
As Kwen and Marion ascended once again, the now-Demon must have sensed the shaman's attack. Instead of trying to evade, it shifted forms again as the heavy weight was about to collide. There was a clear, metallic ring, followed by another as the crimson scales of the now-Dragon deflected2 Taki's strike. A flick of the wrist retracted the weight as it snapped forward with wide jaws, intent on making a morsel of her3.
As it's muzzle opened wide, obscuring view, Taki seemed to meld into the shadow4 beneath the creature. A moment later she appeared beneath it's softer belly, the sound of heavy jaws snapping shut making her grin. Gripping the cane between two hands, she gave the ends a twist and drew a pair of short swords5. She squat low, then launched at it's belly swords first, activating the swords' ability to dash short distances.

The fae's sadistic intentions proves to contribute to its downfall.
The swords sink into the scales- which are more like crocodilian skin on the belly side- and the blades ran down the length of its underside. Skin and tendon and muscle broke under steel and the speed behind it, and the dragon-shape roared in pain as it's abdomen had been split open like this, and blood and organs started to pour out of the wound. It is not dead, yet, but that is a pretty major wound.
It's form flickered, affected by the injury, as it tied to shift forms again- back into the safety of the semi-incorporeal Incarnation of Fear, but the gaping wound had proven to carry through transformations, the demon leaking a thick, dark mist from the gash- and it did not seem to be so pleased. Teleporting to a distance, the demon morphed into a Chthonian, and casted both grasping tentacles with intention to pin the dancer down, and then Psionic Blast.
In the air, as they had seen the fae pull distance- Kweh and Marion swiftly followed, and the dragoonfly once again dropped a glob of amber on the creature- now that it was much less mobile in this form, it should be an easier aim. Marion threw a Divinity's blessings on Taki while they were within range- he is not sure if she would be able to avoid the blast with the tentacles and all, might as well make some good out of it. ————————————————— 1. spitting (Kweh) The Dragoonfly is able to spit a sticky substance similar to honey within a five foot radius, trapping anyone standing within it for one 2. -(Light)(Mystical Archives) Divinities Blessing (Marion) You target yourself or an ally, coating them in a shield of divine protection. Rolling as she hit the sand, Taki was up on her feet again and moving. Whatever this thing was, it seemed to be subject to the injuries of it's form. It complained as it tried to shift forms, only to realize the wound wasn't going anywhere. The now-Demon teleported again as a dark miasma leaked from it's open gut, then took on a new and grotesque form. The humanoid figure gazed at them with a quartet of wriggling appendages ringing an otherwise smooth, grey face. Two bulbous, black eyes fixed their gaze before unleashing a torrent of attacks.
If it weren't for Marion's quick thinking, and exceptional protective spell, the dancing Orochi might have been caught by the assault. There was a seething, dark look in her eyes, one of knowing and pain and horrid memories. Hearing the heavy crash of the now-Flayer's simultaneous hits snapped Taki out of the moment and into action. Her tongue snaked out into a small pouch on her belt with three larger pills inside. Swallowing it, she felt a surge of energy1 as she gripped her weapons tightly and planned each movement of her strikes.
When the psionic attack passed, Taki dashed forward again with her twin blades2. Bringing them down in a crossing slash, the creature leaned back and off balance. Before her blades were ready to strike again, the Kusarigama3 did it's gruesome work. She cut across the opposite side of it's abdomen first, then pivoted and brought the weight around to swing towards it's knee. Lastly, she used the rebound of the weight to hurl a sweeping slash level with the creature's neck.
Each strike intensified her attack, until she was a blur of motion that seemed to be only semi-corporeal. As the rope in her hand goes taut, she launches forward again4, blades in hand and delivers a trio of simultaneous slashes across it's back.

Her speed did not allow any window for the fae to shift into it's incarnation of fear form as a defense- and with the dragoonfly amber holding it in place unable to doge out of the way, the mind flayer was as in as bad a situation as it could get when a spellcaster have been locked down by a melee fighter, unable to cast it's spells or morph as pain rained down- it had attempted to retaliate physically, but the wounds and blood loss made it much weaker than before-
And then, the Divinity's Blessing wore off- and the airborne pair descended once more, continuing to make sure the fae remained trapped with amber, and Marion twirled his staff around to point in a dipping motion towards it- and the Blessing's accumulated power went off, a brilliant light escaping from Taki and spreading out around her- while the light had left them feeling largely refreshed, it caused the Fae considerable pain, after all, it was indeed the equivalent of throwing its own spells against it
And at that, the shapeshifting broke completely. The fae was in no shape to maintain such a ability now, and it glared up at the pair resentfully- the fae's own shape looked like a humanoid but with flower petals extending from their skin and one too many insectile wings, and its face in an uncanny mix of features that somehow reminded you of felines, or owls, with dark glittery eyes- it would have been fair, if not for the vileness twisting it's expression, as well as the wretched state it had been beaten down into- and you could tell it was only so far away from disintegrating altogether.

As she felt her blades find their targets, a brilliant energy gathers before bursting forth. Marion's spell bombarded the creature as Taki slid across the shifting sands, pivoting to continue. The sight that greeted her filled the Orochi with a mix of disappointment and annoyance. The creature's facade faded to reveal a familiar, albeit warped, form. The sinister glee in the fae's expression left little doubt as to it's intentions, if left to recover. Stepping back from the creature, she let out a heavy, hissing sigh. Pulling a paper talisman from a pocket in her robe, Taki tossed it with a flick of the wrist 1. "May the flames cleanse the pain you have wrought. Give these tormented spirits peace in the next life they were denied, that they may bloom brilliantly."
She was solemn in that still moment as the talisman sailed through the air. As the inscribed strip of paper passed overhead, there was a sudden and shrill screeching. Blazing petals of flame expanded out in concentric circles, their wide teardrop 'leaves' erupting into rings of color. The outermost petals were a rich purple, then pink, white, yellow-orange, and finally a core of red. The whole affair spread out in a wide cone, engulfing an area of about twenty feet. As the Lotus of multicolored fire cleared, it left behind a scorched pattern and bits of fused sand that didn't quite get hot enough to turn to glass. Taking a moment to regain her composure, she signaled to Marion that it was safe to land. While not the outcome either had hoped for, Taki felt sure of her assessment of it's character. She took a deep breath, ready to face her adventuring companion and their potential emotions at the outcome. ______ 1: Scroll Arts: Fire Flower Scroll This scroll or seal tag can be placed and used remotely or used directly by the Oniwanban Shadow. When used or activated it releases a fan of fire balls that barrel forward in a twenty foot cone and burn anything in their path dealing moderate fire damage. Some say the fire itself looks like a budding flower as it moves outwards.

Oh, oh no.
Even if the sun was high in the sky, the brilliant flower of flames messed with Kweh's backlight directional sensing, and Marion was practically gripping its fur and yelling directions to it vocally to prevent the moth-like creature from tipping over sideways and circling into the spell- and it was such a relief when the fire went out. The pair circled back, and landed safely- Clambering down, Marion had a silent moment with the Dragoonfly just to make sure if it's alright, and opened the pet pocket space for it to rest temporarily in, the mount clearly still somewhat disoriented.
After that was said and done, The sun elf hugged his staff a he jogged forwards towards the charred ground, where the fae had used to be, and squatted down beside Taki, examining the sand before standing up again.
"I don't have much experience in this, but- I've heard that you usually loot the body, or harvest material from it. " He scratched his head, looking abit hesitant.
"Do we... collect the ash to bring back to report? "
Having to wrangle Kweh while the fae burned, Marion could not really even be sure which bit of half-melted glass was supposed to be it's remains... while this may sound quite disrespectful to the dead, Marion didn't seem to think anything odd of it.
