The past year has been...something. Both a lot and nothing at all has happened. The world is changing, yet it all still feels the same. But maybe that's just because alcohol blurs everything together. Tsarra has found herself - on more than one occasion - in a complete drunken stupor. She's started and ended fights, gotten banned from half of the taverns across the continent, and continues to wander around with little to no purpose. Just what the fuck is she doing with her life? She doesn't know, and she's gotten to a point where she's stopped caring. Everything that she's tried has always blown up in her face, no matter if it was something well-intended, or pure selfishness. The constant slip-ups and failures have just left her numb and bitter. The only thing that takes the edge off is the bottle, but someone who is broke can't even lose themselves in that amber sea. So, that's how she found herself pretending to be a captain of a riverboat tour in the Crescent Isles. The increase in tourism makes for a quick and easy cash grab. Foreigners are gullible and so long as you don't swindle the wrong person or piss off any locals you can run a pretty shoddy operation for a good chunk of time before any word makes it back to the authorities. And shoddy is an understatement for the poorly conceived operation Tsarra has come up with. The raft she hauled out of the bottom of the river is patched together with whatever other discarded junk she could slap together. It's barely buoyant and only stays afloat thanks to Tsarra's magic keeping it from capsizing with people inside it. The seats are hard and uncomfortable, and there's no shade to keep the sun off one's head while they sit for hours listening to Tsarra bullshit her way through the tour. Half the information she can barely make coherent, while the other half she just makes shit up. If some poor sap wanted an educational experience, they sure weren't getting it from the fish woman. Even the most gullible folks who don't catch on to her BS still don't get away with an entertaining experience as Tsarra's bad attitude threatens to get them left stranded or dunked off the raft into the river should they say even the slightest thing to set her off. Even if someone was impressed by seeing her animal companions - one being a large eel-like dog with off-putting unblinking eyes and a gaping mouth and the other a brilliantly colored sea-monster with long ribbon-like fins that rail down its spine and tail - that's still not enough to distract from just how piss-poor of a business venture this is. The customer service is undeniably the worst in the land. She hasn't even been running her scam all that long and already there are rumors about a crazy sea hag running awful tours. Though for some that is more a draw than an actually competently run operation. Bringing PetsTitan the Tidal Serpent Slimly the Eel Hound Quest Name: River Tour Participants: Two or more Location: Crescent Isles Post Requirements: 5 posts per person, 200 words per post Reward: +1 Renown Description: The Crescent Isles are a beautiful, serene place to visit this time of the year, and one of the biggest attractions that draw tourist are its beautiful, twisting rivers that snake throughout the region and connect many of its bodies of water. It has become a favorite pastime of nobles and the rich to hire guides to take them down the river on a boat. Be a part of one of these river raft rides, either by acting as a guide for a visitor, or maybe going on a tour yourself! However, the trip is not going to be as calm and peaceful as expected. Rough rapids, rocky outcroppings, and unpredictable sea life look to bring disaster to your ride.

As soon as Hylltywyll heard rumors about a sea hag, he was exactly one of the people who wanted to see them for himself. That they were apparently giving boat tours was a little weird, but that just increased his curiosity. He followed along as a group traveled down a dirt path down to the riverbank where he could see something floating on the water.
When they finally got close enough to see it, the only thing Hylltywyll could say about the boat was that it looked like a real piece of shit. How these tourists didn't just turn right around when they saw it themselves, he had no idea. Maybe tourists really were just that stupid.
Well, the shotty boat aside, Hylltywyll was here to get a look at a sea hag. He looked around as the pack of tourists boarded the, for lack of a better term, "boat", trying to spot the rumored creature, until he spotted something familiar. A slack jawed eel hound with big, unblinking eyes that was slithering out of the water and walking up onto the deck. He recognized that dumb face! He looked around and finally spotted Tsarra, the fishy woman apparently running a fishy business out here in the Crescent Isles. He hadn't seen her in a while.
He immediately vanished and reappeared on top of Tsarra's head, pushing her hat down to cover her eyes.
"Long time, no see!" Hylltywyll greeted with a mischievous smile in his tell-tale scrunkly little voice that anyone who knew him would recognize. "New boat? Looks real... floating." He said, looking around and trying to think of the best non-lie he could say about the thing. There wasn't much good to say. He wasn't even sure if "floating" would be true for very long.

While the tourists haven’t turned tail and run. Yet. They do exchange some unsure looks between themselves when they realize just how much of a mistake they’ve made is. But either unbridled curiosity or just superior stupidity drives them to risk taking a swim in the river as they gingerly step onto the raft.
Slimy’s tongue lols out of the side of his mouth before he slathers his own eyeball in saliva. One of the tourists scoots away from the eel hound as its spittle showers their pant leg. The creature pays the tourists no mind and just stares unblinking at Hyll until he vanishes. Even then the eel hound continues to stare at the now empty space Hyll once occupied.
As Hyll noticed, Tsarra is not too far from the raft, having popped a squat on a barrel while waiting for her next group of suckers to arrive. She doesn’t really interact with them much, she’s more interested in what swill is left in the bottom of a green glass bottle she clutches in her hand.
Tsarra grunts as Hyll jumps on her head and pushes the brim of her hat down over her eyes. It's a good thing she's not so drunk to not recognize the little wonderling's voice. It's also a good thing that Hyll's probably the only person in the entire world that she actually gets along with.
"Aye, it's been a while. Would like to say it's good ta see ya too, but ya've gone an' made me blind."
If Hyll would allow it, she’d fix her hat and offer what’s left of the bottle to him. She’d then scoff and kick at the raft much to the unease of the tourists currently on it.
“Dredged it up from the bottom of the river,” she explains, ignoring the look of disgust on one woman’s face as she finds the rotten remnants of some poor fish that must have come up with the raft under her seat. “A sane person would 'ave left it there ta rot.”
She looks at Hyll, her expression tired and definitely drunk. “What’re ya doin’ out ‘ere anyway?”

Hylltywyll chuckled as he dismounted from the fish lady's head and perched himself on one of her knees while she fixed her hat. His nose wrinkled as he took a sniff of the offered bottle and stuck out his tongue with a disgusted face, refusing to take a drink. Ugh, alcohol. He didn't know why people drank such disgusting smelling, awful tasting stuff. Maybe it was just tasted bad to Fae or something, or maybe just to him. It seemed stupidly popular for something that tasted so bad. There were even bars and taverns basically devoted to serving alcohol to people. Weird.
He looked at the boat appraisingly, nodding along as Tsarra explained its origins.
"Hmm, it looks like it." He noted with a smirk. The boat definitely looked like it had seen better days, that's for sure. Hearing it had been found on the bottom of the river wasn't surprising at all. There was some rotted away bits, some holes that were probably the reason it had sunk in the first place, and what looked like attempts to repair it that had actually just done more damage. It was held together with some nails and a prayer and he was surprised anyone had been willing to step aboard.
"Heh, well, I never said you were sane." Hylltywyll remarked with a sideways glance at Tsarra before continuing to examine the boat. Yeah, a sane person probably would have thought this thing was a lost cause and left it there, but sometimes the most fun ideas were a little insane. This floating OSHA violation looked like it could be fun, until it decided to return to the depths from whence it came. If he used his magic, he might actually be able to fix it up to something less in danger of sinking at any moment, but that wouldn't be very exciting, would it?
"Oh, I heard some rumors about a crazy sea hag giving awful boat tours and wanted to see her for myself. Guess I can settle for you though." He answered Tsarra;s question teasingly with a shrug.
"Looks like all your other passengers are onboard." He said, pointing out the group of tourists that had all migrated to the deck of the boat, some of them looking a bit more concerned about the safety of the vessel than others. "Is there any room for me? I don't see any seats available... that aren't covered in something gross..." He observed with mock sadness, looking at Tsarra with pleading, puppy dog eyes. He could also clean the boat magically, but he thought the looks on the passengers' faces when they found something gross was too funny. And, he didn't want to just sit on a chair and go along for the boat ride like the rest of the tourists. "I can help. I can be your fist mate."

Tsarra scoffs and chugs the last few gulps of liquid from her bottle. “If there is some sea hage musclin’ in on my turf then I’ll need ya help to beat the shit outta ‘er.”
Clearly she isn't of sound enough mind to make the connection between the rumors and her own haggish behavior as of late. So evidentally Hyll's joke sails right over the fish-woman's head.
Some of the passengers definitely are starting to have second thoughts about this, but now they have the conundrum of risking the drunk fish's ire should they choose to bail out of the tour.
"Aye, course there's room of ya."
Tsarra then proceeds to step onto the raft and unceremoniously get one of the tourists to give up their spot near the front of the vessel for Hyll. She even takes off her coat and covers the damp wood with it for the wonderling.
Then Slimy decides to jump aboard the raft as well making it lurch from side to side precariously.
"Oi, Slimy! Get! Ya can swim, ya dummy!" Tsarra gives the eel-hound a little boot in the rear, her boot slipping harmlessly off the creature's slippery skin.
Once the eel-hound slides over the edge and into the river the raft has a chance to stop rocking back and forth. The tourists look terrified and are clinging to their chairs for dear life, but Tsarra hardly seems to care.
"Alright, time ta shove off. Keep ya hands an' feet inside the boat, don't touch nothin', and if ya whine don't come cryin' ta me when I toss ya overboard."
Before anyone can commit to jumping back on shore, Tsarra waves a hand and the water current holding the boat shifts and pushes it out into the middle of the river.[1] Slimy swims along side the raft with his awkward gaping mouth sticking out of the water while the other much larger Tidal Serpent lazily follows after the raft. The river currently slowly starts pulling the raft downstream while Tsarra collects her thoughts. What few there are considering her level of inebriation.
"So, this is a river. Water goes from there," she points upstream, "ta there," she points downstream. "All rivers drain towards the ocean yadda, yadda, yadda gravity."

Hylltywyll looked at Tsarra with a raised eyebrow, not sure if she really didn't get his joke or if she was making one of her own in response. She didn't really look like she was joking...
He was a little disappointed she glossed over his offer to help and just seated him in the first row next to a couple of other passengers who looked down at him and quickly scooted in their seats when he gave them both a look. He might be small and fuzzy, but they got a distinct sense that they didn't want to mess with him. He let out a small growl and the set of three seats suddenly became solely occupied by the tiny Fae, the two passengers finding new seats farther back just before the boat started to move and the river tour began.
And wow, what a tour. Hylltywyll could see why the reviews weren't very positive. Did anyone here actually need to be told that this was a river? Who didn't know water went from upriver to downriver? And every river leading to the ocean was just wrong. Some drain into lakes or underground.
Hyll also noticed there was just something off about Tsarra. She was slurring her words and moving funny. If Hylltywyll had to guess, he'd say she was under the effects of some kind of drug or poison. Unknown to Hyll, he wasn't entirely wrong. Alcohol is practically a poison, especially in too large a quantity. Also unknown to Hyll was just what Tsarra was trying to use that poison to kill.
The little Fae slipped forward off his seat while Tsarra was busy pointing out a very interesting rock in the water and gave her a tap on the leg, sending a quick pulse of a dull purple light across the fishy woman's skin.

Tsarra blinks as the magic takes effect and clears her system of the alcohol. She looks down at Hyll with a confused frown for a moment.
"What'd ya do that for?" She asks sourly.
One of the tourists raises their hand nervously. "Uhm, ma'am?"
"What?" Tsarra snaps at them.
"Are we supposed to be going this fast?"
Tsarra glances down at the current that definitely is growing rougher and pulling the raft quickly downstream.
"Aye, what of it?"
The passengers exchange a look of growing concern but are still more worried about pissing off the unhinged fish lady more than potentially going on an unplanned white water raft ride.
Tsarra takes her hat off and runs her fingers through her fins, clearly of clearer mind but now unable to hide behind the drunkenness. Her lack of concern about the tour quality hasn't changed in the slightest though, even as the water starts to splash up over the edge of the raft.
The two aquatic creatures in the water are equally unbothered, more than content chasing one another in the rougher waters.
The fish woman takes a moment to turn away from Hyll and the group, not wanting to break down ugly crying in front of anyone. She's fine after all. And people who are totally fine don't have a reason to cry. So she doesn't need to cry. Clearly.
Hiccup
Fuck.
She whips her eyes.
"Uhm, Ma'am???" The passenger pipes up again.
"Gods dammit, what do you want now!?"
They point at the river up ahead of them which twists and turns with rocks poking out between dips and peaks of raging water.

Hylltywyll looked up at Tsarra with a frown of his own. He could see she was clearly better now that he had removed the poison, but she was acting like he'd done something wrong. Her sour attitude irked Hyll. He used his magic to help her and this was how she was thanking him? By grumbling at him and getting snippy with another passenger?
Hmph. Another passenger. Right. He was just a passenger on this boat too because Tsarra ignored his offer to help and now she was acting like this when all he did was help her. Why was he even bothering? Fae didn't help people unless they got something out of it in a deal. He hadn't even asked her for anything in return. He was being nice and she was acting so unappreciative. Worse, she was acting like she didn't want his help.
"You were acting dumb and poisoned." He grumbled, his eyes narrowed.
He went back to his seat and sat down, arms crossed as he silently sulked. He didn't pay any mind to the panic of the other passengers who were grabbing whatever they could hold onto the avoid being thrown off of the boat as it rocked violently through the white waters. Knuckled were white as passengers gripped the sides of the boat, their seats, their neighbors.
The boat shook as a sound of cracking wood and grinding stone came from one side, the boat having scraped against a jutting rock in the water. Water started to slowly flow into the boat from one side, causing the passengers to lift their feet off the floor and onto their chair. Cries of distress sounded out and more and more passengers looked to Tsarra.
Hylltywyll sat on his chair, staring at Tsarra silently.
He could fix the leak in the boat easily, but Tsarra didn't want his help.

The passenger's panicking quickly starts to get to Tsarra and she clenches her fists as they freak out about the leak.
"If ye didn't want ta get wet, ye should've stayed on shore!" She snaps at them as she loses her temper and then pulls up a wave to bring the raft to a rough and abrupt stop.[1,2]
The poor passengers, victims of their own curiosity are unseated and tumble backward off the raft and into the water. They shout in alarm as they're quickly swept downstream, their little heads bobbing in the rapids until they eventually dip out of sight somewhere down the river.
Slimy pops their head up out of the water and clambers up onto the raft with no grace whatsoever now that there's enough room for the slippery pup to be on board. The Tidal Serpent stays alongside the still vessel by swimming upstream, diving in and out of the rapids like it's nothing.
Tsarra huffs and sits down on the raft and buries her face in her hands.
"I'm sorry..." she finally utters from behind her hands. "I don't know what I'm doin' anymore."
She knows she's been acting like a jerk and a fool. She knows Hyll is just trying to help. But dammit does it feel like the world is just falling apart all around her. She can't even say she's being dramatic when whole ass mountains have been wiped off the face of the planet within the past year.
She takes a moment to pull herself together, wiping more tears from her face and then looking over at Hyll. "Wasn't actin'...I just am dumb." She gestures to the hole in the raft. "I'm a wreck just like this damned raft."

Hylltywyll was a gifted magic user, a powerful Fae being, a master of light and dark. There were a lot of titles he could claim and be perfectly accurate. Therapist was not one of them. He had no idea how to deal with these kinds of feelings. He couldn't even say for certain he knew what she was feeling.
Hylltywyll leaned back with a bewildered expression as Tsarra began to cry, feeling an almost instinctual repulsion at the sight. He really didn't know how to deal with this. Why was she crying? It wasn't anything he'd done, right? He caused tears! He didn't try to stop them! What was he supposed to do when he didn't know the reason someone was crying?
"Uhh..." He let out a small sound of confusion as he glanced around and then tentatively reached a hand forward. Was he supposed to... pat her head or something? He'd seen people do that to comfort children he stole candy from. But, before he could touch her, he flinched and pulled his hand back as she looked up at him and spoke.
He looked over at the hole in the raft as she motioned to it. Water slowly leaked in, the boat very gradually sinking back down into the water it had been mercilessly dragged out of.
"Hmph. I already knew you were dumb." Hyll huffed as he walked along the seats over to the side of the boat to put a hand on it. "That didn't stop me from getting on the boat, or offering to help you."
With a slight purple glow from his palm, a bit of magic spread into the boat from the Fae. With a groan of wood, the hole in the boat, along with a few others that looked less than professionally repaired, began to close and reseal themselves back into solid hull. A little more magic and the boat looked almost presentable. It was still looking like something dragged out of the muck, some rotting bits here and there, but it couldn't be described as a total wreck anymore.
If most of the passengers hadn't already been sent flying overboard, they likely would have been relieve to see the boat looking a lot less like it could sink at any moment. The few remaining definitely did. Oh well. Hylltywyll didn't really care about any of them anyways. He was a little disappointed that there were a lot less to pickpocket now though.
"That looks better. Not such a wreck." Hyll said with a smirk, sitting in his seat and kicking his legs lightly in front of him, his hands planted on the seat at his sides.

When Hyll fixes the ratty raft, Tsarra wipes her eyes and gives half a laugh. “Thanks…”
“C-can we get off now?” One of the remaining passengers asks.
“Ye can get off whenever ye want, just gotta swim fer it.” Tsarra huffs with her top-tier customer service.
“Uh…” They look over at the tidal serpent that locks eyes with them. “Nevermind.”
Tsarra takes a few deep breaths and seems to calm down, collecting herself as much as an unstable, walking-talking typhoon can. She fiddles with her fingernails as if to distract herself from the storm of emotions swirling around inside her before she finally figures out what to say.
“Ye probably think I’m a right ungrateful jerk with how I treated ye…can’t say yer wrong.” She sighs and doesn’t meet Hyll’s gaze, definitely a bit ashamed of her behavior towards probably the only friend she has left…if she hasn’t already burned that bridge too. “I ‘ppreciate the help…been too drunk ta really say it properly.”
Slimy’s claws scramble across the wood as the eelhound slithers around and then flops down on its back at Tsarra’s feet and causing the raft to bounce on the bubble of current keeping it from going down the rapids. The slippery creature’s legs paw at the air as if demanding the fish woman’s attention.
Tsarra reaches down and starts giving the eelhound a belly rub. Slimy’s tail flicks back and forth, slapping against raft as it does.
“I uhm…haven’t had the best year. Guess it was gettin’ ta me worse than I’m willin’ ta admit. How about yerself?”

Hyll turned around and glared at the passengers that rudely interrupted their conversation while Tsarra scolded them. Why didn't these ones fall off too? He shook his head and turned back to Tsarra, the passengers staring at the tidal serpent slithering through the water, clearly not eager to join it.
As Tsarra tried to calm down and settle the swirl of emotions inside her, Hylltywyll felt the emotions in his chest grow tighter. More talking, about emotions, about problems. More emotions he just wasn't used to, that he couldn't handle. He didn't know how to respond. Weren't people supposed to say something comforting in this situation? He... didn't know how to be comforting. He was a Fae. He couldn't even tell an innocent white lie to make someone feel better.
"You were a bit of a jerk..." He mumbled, glancing away. That probably didn't help. "It's okay."
His legs dangled over the edge of his seat, kicking slightly just to have something to do as he watch Tsarra rub the eelhound's belly. It looked like the dumb thing with its glassy eyes and vacant stare was better at being comforting than him. Whatever. That was fine with him. He wasn't about to lay on the ground and let someone pet him.
"It's been... different." He answered Tsarra's question with a bit of hesitation. It certainly had been very different for him ever since he'd eaten that dumb frog and grown a gnawing hunger for mana. He'd gotten mostly used to it by now, but that did remind him of the last time he'd seen Tsarra. She had been there when he'd eaten the frog, and he remembered in that first, sudden hunger he had bitten her.
"Uh..." He started, a twisting feeling in his chest. Did he ever apologize for that? They had just awkwardly gotten out of that tunnel and split ways, hardly any treasure for their troubles, and a curse on him. That adventure had been a disaster.
"Why has your year been difficult?" He asked suddenly, not even sure why he'd asked. He was sure the question would lead to more emotions, talking about her troubles, more twisting in his stomach, but he asked anyways. If there was one thing that he was worse at than trying to comfort someone, it was saying he was sorry.

Tsarra makes a bit of a face, something like a grimace at the bad memories and all the mixed-up emotions causing turmoil within her. She takes a breath and tries not to let it get to her. If she cries anymore she'll shrivel up like a dried sardine.
"Probably been more than a year if I'm bein' 'onest. Ever since the crew I used to pal 'round with left me high and dry, everythin's been a mess."
She hates thinking about it. She hates having to be confronted with the reality that they probably left her behind because of how she treated them, and that everyone else she's met since hasn't stuck around because she hasn't learned a damn thing. She wants to keep being mad, to keep blaming anyone else besides herself for how things have turned out. But at this point, it's only the alcohol that can keep her stuck in her delusions. When she's sober, she's got no reason not to look in a mirror and be disgusted with herself.
She's the problem. She knows that. But she doesn't know how to even begin to fix herself. She's not even sure it's worth the effort.
"Guess I miss them...or maybe just miss havin' anyone 'round ta rely on when thin's are tough."
Slimy lolls his tongue out of his mouth as Tsarra keeps rubbing his slippery belly. If it weren't for the company of the derpy eelhound and the other critters she's managed to pick up during her travels, she's not sure where she would be right now. Not that this situation is great. Hungover, broke, homeless, and friendless is about as bottom of the barrel as one can get.
Though maybe she's wrong to say she has no friends aside from the fish she keeps company. Hyll's here after all...and he probably wouldn't tell her that 'it's okay' if he didn't care even a little bit. That's a sobering thought. And yet...
"Feels like nothin' I do is good enough sometimes. If people just leave in the end no matter how good you try ta be ta them, then why try ta be good at all?"

Ugh. If Hylltywyll thought he had even a chance of being able to help before, now he knew he absolutely couldn't. Being upset because people left. He just never felt that, never emotionally tied himself to anyone like that. Never had a group he belonged to that he cared about or thought cared about him. Never missed or relied on someone. It was practically an alien concept to him. How Tsarra was so upset by something like that baffled him, but he tried to understand.
He felt like he was getting a headache. He closed his eyes and shook his head for a moment before looking at Tsarra with one eyebrow raised.
"Why do you care about them so much if they left you? Why do you need to rely on other people? You have strong sea domain magic. I can see it. You don't need to rely on some dumb crew. Nothing you do needs to be good enough for anyone but yourself. You can rely on yourself, on your magic." Hylltywyll saidin a lightly scolding tone, a slight tinge of annoyance almost leaking into his voice.
It was annoying, having to teach someone something so basic. Why was she so attached to others? It made no sense. Relying on oneself and only on oneself was the only thing that did make sense to him. Being in a group was stupid. Fae didn't do it. Even the Court of Wonder didn't attach itself to any of its members, kicking them out and electing new ones every season. People only needed to make groups to do the things any of them alone would be too weak to do, like moving a ship across the water.

Hyll's disgruntled attitude towards this whole conversation goes right over Tsarra's frilly head. Admittedly, she doesn't know that fae are just built different and how they think is not very typical of other folks. She's never even thought about it, and still isn't. Hyll's just a little guy, a little guy who doesn't give a shit. So when he asks her why she cares so much, she doesn't think he's weird for asking or catch on that he just couldn't relate. In a way, it's gaslighting her into questioning herself more.
"I don't know..." she admits.
Because she misses them? Because they weathered harrowing storms together and were supposed to have each other's backs? Because she's scared of being alone and having to rely only on herself when she's proven others can't rely on her? There's a multitude of possibilities and a huge possibility that more than one of them are correct. As much as she tries to be tough on the outside, she's a bit more fragile than she'd like to admit on the inside.
Nothing you do needs to be good enough for anyone but yourself.
But that's the problem. She's not good enough for anyone including herself. If she was, she wouldn't still feel like such a failure a full year later when she should have moved on with her life already. She's barely accomplished anything she said she would when she was still angry about the rest of them leaving. She was going to show them, wasn't she? Get her own crew and ship and make a name for herself without them.
What progress has she made towards any of that? The only friend she has is Hyll, and he's got his own schemes going on. She supposes she has built a reputation in a way, but it's not one that has earned her any respect from even the common folk. All she's really done is waste the past year in a drunken stupor that only half-brained fish can stand to put up with.
She takes a long, deep breath.
"I don't think magic solves everythin'. It don't make them leavin' hurt less."
She doesn't want to think about it anymore. Standing up, she waves her hand and reverses the flow of the rapids around the raft so that it moves back towards the riverbank.
Neither her nor Hyll have to say a word to the other passengers in order to get them to jump ship. As soon as they're close enough not to get swept away by the current, they bail and flee the scene. They don't even demand a refund for their tour, which is probably a good thing if they want to remain at least a little dry.
Tsarra sits back down on the raft and runs a hand through her fins. "Guess I just don't know what ta do with myself."
