Astrid looks at Everett with such an unimpressed expression when he challenges her ability to get down. Without blinking, a pair of wings unfurl themselves from beneath her cape.[1] “Aye, I can. Can you?” she challenges right back. Maybe Astrid expected a lot more of this guy for some reason, and then seeing him captured by the bandits just really threw her for a loop and made her lose whatever confidence she might have had in him. To be fair to Everett, Cypress didn’t tell her nor know a lot about him. Honestly, it’s a miracle they even found him this time.
That doesn’t mean she’s letting him take Cypress down to Arcus. Instead, Astrid offers up her arms to her girlfriend. Ultimately, who Cypress goes with is up to her. If Astrid wanted to be just a little more spiteful, she’d stash Arcus in his Pet Pocket and then the pegasus wouldn’t be a problem at all. However, Astrid does want Cypress to have a means of getting around. So, while Buttfellow is being an excellent distraction, Astrid helps Cypress onto Arcus.
“Look, Mister Everett, the plan was ta get captured so we could find their camp an’ destroy it,” Astrid finally explains. “Ain’t no use fightin’ a few bandits on the road. That don’t solve some a’ the root a’ the problem. Findin’ an’ destroyin’ their hideout, on the other hand, well, that’ll scare ‘em off at least.”
Behind them, the wooden bridge starts cracking beneath the golem’s feet, and the golem, with how few thoughts go through his metal head, thinks that maybe, just maybe, he should protect himself from the fall. Golden runes glow across Buttfellow’s form, taking on a protective aura[2] just in time for the bridge to completely fall out beneath him and what few bandits still remained. They all splash down in the swampy water below, and Buttfellow looms over them ready to deliver a few more knocks to the head.
Astrid watches this over her shoulder and then looks up at the fire catching on the buildings. “Ah. He’s fine. Won’t stay active like that fer much longer though. We should probably find yer stuff.”
