Snow blanketed Moonveil forest that winter's eve as the sun began to fall beneath the horizon. Elves, humans, and other folk still retired to their homes, retiring for a good night's rest and for a chance to get away from the omnipresent chill in the air. Snow was still falling as the sun found itself tucked out of sight, and a half moon rose bright and proud into the night sky above, veiled behind puffy clouds, set against a background of black, violet and blue. It was a perfect night, a calm night, a peaceful night.
That of course meant someone had to go and muck it all up.
Enter Tatalia, scholar, historian, and explorer extraordinaire, now also a newly minted Red Rogue. She'd been on the criminal side of such affairs in the past, but never before in a costume. But a costume she wore this time! Warm red clothes, a pointed red hat with a white ball of fuzz at the end, and a red mask to hide her face from the world. There wasn't much use trying to hide her pointy green ears or her yellow eyes, however, for it was plain to see Tatalia was a goblin.
The little woman had a mission that winter night. She was careful to leave no tracks, leaping from treetop to treetop when none were looking,1 traveling with haste to her target, a proud manor atop a hill, its walls alabaster in hue, its towers tall and capped with azure cones that looked so serene that snowy night.
The manor's owner, Lord Silverbow, was throwing a fantastic winter's ball for his many friends. The party was the very picture of opulence and excess, with vast stores of foodstuffs presented to his guests upon only the finest of dishware. The cutlery was of exquisite quality and design; the wine bottles were enchanted to always be the perfect temperature; and the gifts, oh, the gifts that were brought for Lord Silverbow were rumored to be stacked so high that one could swim in them.
Unfortunately for Lord Silverbow, the Red Rogue was coming to relieve him of his food and his treasures. She knew where his fortune came from; she knew the nature of his friends. She knew much more than that, too, and the goblin had decided to take from him all that she could. She had very good ideas for how to use the bounty he squandered so.
Of course, Lord Silverbow's party was well guarded. The manor was situated on a tall hill, for one, and the forest thinned around it, allowing few opportunities for cover on the approach. There were guards posted along the walls as well, as well as patrolling within the estate. And given that the manor was more akin to a castle than a mansion, there were doubtlessly checkpoints and choke points manned by men with sharp spear points, and all the noble's guests would have guards of their own, and every last one would be ready for a Red Rogue. It would be foolhardy for any thief to target the gala.
But that was precisely why Tatalia would succeed. Who would suspect someone to actually raid Lord Silverbow's fortress?
The goblin slipped down gently from the tree she'd approached from, then tugged her camouflaged cloak about herself.2 She'd hide the red outfit while she made her approach. So, blending in with the snow around her, making no sound and scarcely leaving a footprint, Tatalia made her way toward the castle walls.
