Javal had been hired as well as the rest of his team to work as security protecting the expedition towards Arid Mesa. It was a chance for many people to stake their claim on uncharted lands but they would have to deal with the dangerous beasts that lay within. And that’s what Javal and his company were here for as they set sail alongside the rest of the ships of the people who were coming to explore. The Sword of Abaddon followed the rest of the ships and stayed in the back to make sure no sneaky ambush attacks while at sea would happen.
After a few days of traveling the expedition had arrived and they had docked at the coast. Javal walked down the ramp of his ship followed by his retainers and pets he decided to take with him for this mission. He was followed by his two retainers Nadia Sadrine, Meryl Greine, and Karkino the Crab Apple. He then looked around to see what type of people he was in charge of protecting, spotting some merchants, arcane academy members, students, explorers, and even a handful of fighters from the Martial Academy. All and all a pretty big expedition to keep track of.
That’s when he spotted a familiar friend he hadn’t seen since the great battle against Vulcadreus, Lady Shitakibo, he jogged towards her and waved, “Hello Lady Shitakibo it's a pleasure to see you here as well? How’re you doing? What’ve you been up to? What brings you here today?”.
Quest Name: Emperor’s Favor
Participants: Two or more
Location: Arid Mesa
Post Requirements: 6 posts per person, 200 words per post
Reward: +1 Renown, Choice of 2 Common crafting materials
Description: A variety of operations have been launched since the chaos in the Arid Mesa, with all types of companies, organizations, and groups seeking to leave their mark on the mostly unexplored region. Because of this, the once abandoned coastlines have become riddled with camps, settlements, and docked ships, which are now disturbing the local wildlife who are used to quiet emptiness. While most passive species have just fled inland, the mighty Emperor Akhlut has decided upon another course of action. Packs of these odd coastal creatures have begun assaulting nearby camps and ships as they attempt to set up or offload cargo. A request for bodyguards has been put out, seeking help in protecting employees from these creatures while they try to do their jobs.

Keeping up with projects both home and abroad seemed to be a growing problem despite the winter taking hold, it meant there were many tasks to tend that were set aside in the chaos of busy seasons. Taki had found a great deal of difficulty juggling all that needed doing, until her companions all had grown concerned enough to set her down and talk with them. Together, they'd drawn up a plan to get the rest of the winter chores done near and afar. Taki would be spending the rest of the season traveling, while most or all of her companions would be resting and taking care of chores at home. While she did take time off, it rarely was more than a day or so... The pile of letters of request was dwindling, but always seemed to be a few more away from empty.
This particular expedition was another of the Drakolt Incident's aftermath. A large expedition had gathered from across Charon, members from Guilds, the scientific community and various merchants looking to settle the area. Ships had gathered from near and far to partake, weeks of preparation and planning coming together as the group set out across the shore towards the vast and largely unknown Arid Mesa. They set out on a three day trip across the sea, a convoy of sails, supplies and seekers of the unknown. The weather had proven to be amicable for a winter on the open water, only encountering light rain and waves along the way. While those moments were unpleasant for passenger and crew alike, the convoy managed to arrive rather uneventfully.
Taki had traveled as an envoy of the mage's guild, one of many requests that had found their way to her. She was here as both an escort for the protection of the research team, as well as a researcher of natural and biological phenomenon. Each ship had brought a plethora of crew, though everyone on this expedition worked towards a common goal of discovery and understanding. While many of the logistics and laboratory crew were setting up the camp, Taki wandered the area with many other adventurers and warriors. As she was finishing her rounds, a familiar voice called out to her.
“Hello Lady Shitakibo it's a pleasure to see you here as well? How’re you doing? What’ve you been up to? What brings you here today?” Called Javal, waving in his usual excited fashion. Behind him were his compatriots, no doubt here on another Security Detail.
"Good day to you as well Javal, I've been well. Traveling, training, growing... changing... learning new things about myself and life in general. I come here today in the Mage's Guild entourage, commissioned for both research and added security. Also, hello again to you all." Taki replied, waving to his other companions, while she herself was traveling without her typical cadre... zoo if you will...

Javal smiled as he listened to Shitakibo and how she was doing, “That is excellent to hear my friend. After all, as adventurers, we must travel, train, and grow. Oh, you’re in the Mage’s guild my friend I didn’t know that however it does make sense considering you’re such a skilled mage. I was thinking of asking someone to help me out with training my magical ability considering I’ve felt a bit stagnant as of recently".
Nadia bowed politely towards Taki, Meryl simply smiled and waved at the Orochi, while Karkino chirped away as it snipped its claws at the woman.
The bloodblood continues, “So Lady Shikibu have any idea of what we’re going to run into today? Hopefully, it’s another monstrous beast like we fought against last time. I've been itching to do some monster-hunting. Oh, I’ve been meaning to ask you but what do you think about the battle against Vulcadreus? Do you think it’s gonna have bad effects on Charon? Have you felt any ripples in the earth? I'm very interested in your thoughts considering you're so connected with the earth my friend”, he says in all earnest he honestly has a lot of respect for Taki and views her opinion in high regard. He had been very curious since the battle about how everything would change considering they had indeed killed the god of rebirth.

Smiling politely, she considered Javal's list of questions for a few moments. There were indeed mages of great skill who could share their wisdom and instill it in others... but it meant learning such magic in the ways of another, which could limit one's creativity or potential. As far as change went, well that was a constant in this life and there was little she could do to see beyond it.
"Seek a mentor if you feel you need one, but try not to be confined by their teachings. As far as the recent event goes... It will bring about change as all things do, each action we take and choice we make echoes through time... what becomes of that remains to be seen. Those stones are still being cast, albeit with much less ferocity."
She paused a moment, realizing she hadn't addressed his first statement.
"I am here on retainer for the Mage's Guild, they'd like me to do another report on any wildlife I might encounter. As far as what we might see, there's only so much one could guess. Be ready for anything, from an unseen disease to a monster of mythical proportion. If you'd like, I'm free of my obligations for getting this camp set up and could join you. I would like to see the sights, and perhaps we could catch up and keep the spooky monsters at bay."
Taki did her best to say that last part with a straight face, but the smirk crept up her scaled face anyway. The shaman had felt relieved as of late, unbound by emotions that had been a heavy burden that had grown slower than notice. Her home was cared for, her companions safe, and she herself had been undergoing immense personal growth. Some of this change hadn't been easy, but it had been liberating to the shaman's spirit. While she herself felt a stronger connection than ever to the spirit world, she worried for the collective hearts of those following the latest teachings of the Circles. Amongst other things, this trip hopefully would give her time to get used to all that was changing.

“Thanks for your wisdom Lady Shitakibo I shall keep it in mind going forward. I do feel as if I need one considering I kind of have felt lost in the way I use my magic. I haven’t been able to use much of my sea magic as of recently. I’ve found myself mainly focusing on my swordsmanship in battle but I do want to get better at magic. Having been so connected to the sea before not using its power in a fight makes me feel like I’m not as strong as I could be”.
He then looks a bit somber remembering the day that they all fought Vulcadreus; it was a hard-fought battle that took everything. He saw three people die right in front of him for some senseless ‘god’ to appear and try to end their homes.
He cheers back up quickly putting his usual smile on his face, “You’re right we can only wait and see what happens now just hope for the best. We’ve already seen the aftermath considering Mount Drakolt’s destruction. Speaking of that, what do you feel about that? It’s kind of weird to look at when I pass through there and think about how an entire generation will be without it".
He had an excited look on his face as Taki spoke, “It makes sense the Mages Guild has someone as dependable as you, my friend. I am ready and waiting to find whatever matter of danger we find here. For disease or monster, I’d fight both with my blade and my companions at my side. I’d love to have you join us in doing some initial look around the area and catch up. I look forward to working with you and encountering whatever matter of danger ahead”.
Nadia for a second looks confused as her master mentions fighting a disease with his sword and is about to speak up before deciding to keep that thought to herself. Knowing her liege him intent on fighting an intimate concept wasn’t very far-fetched considering she had seen him accomplish the incomprehensible and foolish.

Taki smiled at his zeal, the man if nothing else had a passion for life and lived for a good scuffle. She knew well he backed up those words with a graceful yet brutally efficient skill with the blade, and his companions were just as reliable. Whoever had chosen to hire his Company was betting highly on this expedition, though as to the benevolent entities responsible, there were too many to guess. She might could bother Keyke to find an answer, but that seemed like a poor use of a favor. Oh well, the day was young and the desert was vast, no time like the present.
"Let's take a stroll around the perimeter then. All our activities are bound to be noticed by someone, or something. It would be wise to ensure we had a defensible area when that time comes. Another prudent venture would be a list of natural resources and a simple map of the area's terrain. The waters are fine to fish, though we'll need to retool one of the medium to large vessels to go out very far. Beyond that, we could set up a simple series of trenches and barricades to give us some cover to work with. Any other ideas?"
While she had plenty of her own, Taki was keen to give Javal and his crew the chance to add their own skills and input to the planning stage. They'd fought many battles together, even crossed paths a time or two during the Vulcadreus Incident... though he'd been fashionably held up, his presence was no less important when it was needed most. Taki called her Spirit Guardians1, the pair appearing at either side as if stepping from behind a watery, unseen curtain. Their auras washed over the area as Keta walked over to the shaman and rubbed her spectral body against her side. She responded by petting the feline spirit down her back and rubbing behind the ears.
"Good to see you both are well."
"Of course Taki, have we arrived then?"
"We have, and the first stage is being set now."
"OOooo is it time to start exploring yet?"
"Not quite Keta, we've got to make sure things are safe for everyone first, then we can start venturing out."
"That's stage two, once the landing area is beginning to be built up into a proper port of call."
"Correct as usual Ryu, as always, there's still tons to be done between now and then."
"Ready miss!"
"Another fine day at the beach, thank you Taki."
She chuckled softly and made ready to depart with Javal and company, pondering what might be ahead. She looked up to see there were a handful of clouds in the sky, wispy trails of water floating on the currents. Eventually they'd either move back out towards the open seas to join their brethren en masse, or succumb to the relentless heat and dessication of the Arid Mesa. While they were here on the coast though, there was just enough cloud cover to make use of one of her newer abilities. One of her two eyes took on a spectral glow much like her guardians, and through that eye she could see from the perspective of a cloud2 floating high above.
Below, the construction was beginning, an army of workers milled about the area while a contingent of soldiers kept a tight perimeter on the open area. Several ships lined the shore to either side, in several sizes. They all shared two common traits, a shallow draft and a sturdy keel wide enough to support the ship being hauled ashore. Aside from that, they each were unique to the task at hand. Even the ship that was being dismantled to build the new Port had been carefully engineered for the task. She was vaguely aware of the project, having heard a few of the senior members of the Mage's Guild discussing concerns over material constraints. It was good to see that project hadn't vanished beneath the waves, as it would serve to be one of the unseen marvels of recent engineering.
Each ship had it's own similar accolades, from the full functioning research and analysis lab that the Consortium had funded, to the Mage's Guild's cargo barge that used a trimaran hull designed to keep pace with the convoy. The Fighter's Guild had somehow managed to float a veritable fortress, complete with much of the lighter security and most of the land vehicles and mounts. Three similar ships held expeditionary groups funded by merchants and nobles, wanting to establish towns, and lay claims where the Crown would give it. At the moment, nothing seemed out of place, but the shaman kept a watchful eye from above for any changes.

“Taking a walk around the perimeter sounds incredibly delightful my friend for it is wise to be alert and aware. Our homefront must be properly prepared and armed for if the Arid Mesa decides to fight back then we have no real option of attack. We must make sure we are set up properly and are ready if the time comes. Looking for a map, retooling a ship, and setting up the expedition to be safe sounds incredibly great”, Javal says with excitement.
Nadia herself is incredibly relieved as she takes a sigh of disbelief, she is amazed that for once she was accompanying someone so reasonable. For the last couple of missions, her liege and company had been so reckless and stubbornly straightforward almost getting themselves killed. She’d much rather take things slow and calculate the best outcome so Lady Shitakibo’s wisdom was such a welcome relief.
“We should focus on setting up defenses on the expedition’s coastal front first before anything. Another good idea I thought of maybe is to map some of the areas ahead after we set up everything at the camp”.
Javal then smiled as he saw the two familiar spirits that accompanied the orochi woman, “Hello there spirit friends it’s a welcome sight to see you two” he waved at them wanting to attempt a handshake but knowing his hand would simply phase through.

Keta bowed politely, as did Ryu, though the dragon spirit gave Javal a wary glance.
"We aren't expecting Basilisks again are we?"
"Wha... Oh... RYU!"
"Now now you two, Ryu means well, and no, we aren't expecting any cliff diving adventures or run ins with basilisks... not that we were then either..."
Taki muttered that last part quietly, drawing a glance of her own. She hugged the dragon with a pair of arms, prompting them to wriggle free and glare harder at the shaman. She could see their thoughts plain as day, how could Taki impose such indignity in a public setting. A sly grin crept up her scaly face as she stared back, barely able to hold in a chuckle. Keta meanwhile had noticed Javal's gesture and decided to take things a step further. She practically toppled him over as she rubbed her soft, silky fur against him.
As Taki turned away to see this, she finally burst out into a chuckle. She could almost hear Ryu's jaw hitting the floor over her shoulder as she watched. Keta was no stranger to playful affections, or a good tussle, and she apparently enjoyed the man's presence enough to show it. While this was going on, she walked over to Nadia and the others.
"Does anyone have a notebook handy? If so, I could draw a crude outline of the area I'd like us to inspect. While it might seem unusual, some of my recent training has given me a bird's eye view. With it, we can plan ahead for defenses as we walk and see what there is to be seen from down here."

Javal laughed heartily as he heard Ryu’s swords of concern, “I am not completely sure about that my friend considering the wild untamed lands that the Arid Mesa is. Although I cannot promise you that we will not come across another monstrous Basilisk, I solemnly swear that I and Shitakibo will make sure everyone is safe and protected. That includes you fellows as well as everyone else”.
Then as he stood holding his hand out waiting for a handshake from anyone at this point he noticed Ryu and Taki conversing. He chuckled as Keta almost made him fall over the spirit, an affectionate type rubbing her soft fur against him as he stood back up. He then held his hand out as he attempted to pet the gentle and playful spirit.
“It’s nice to meet you as well again friend Keta”, Javal grinned as he carefully put the spirit trying to be as careful and gentle as he could.
Meryl stood there holding her sides laughing as he found the sight of her boss getting toppled very amusing. While Nadia huffed at the other retainer bothered by the woman’s lack of respect towards their liege. Her attention then focuses on Lady Shitakibo as she joins them the two as well as Karkino who continues to snap his claws at nothing playfully, just scampering. Nadia then pays attention to Lady Shitakibo’s words before quickly reaching into her jacket pocket. She pulls out a single small notebook and hands out over to the orochi a look of self-satisfaction ever present on her face.
“I make sure to carry at least one of these in case I have to draw up a figure for our commissions, prices, and general good information. It comes in handy considering how forgetful and kind my liege is”, the moon elf sighs glancing at Javal as he continues cheerily playing with Keta.

Taki took a moment to make a quick sketch of the area in the notebook. It wasn't fancy, using boxes and ovals to represent the larger structures of the landing area but it did have a reasonably accurate layout of the terrain. This spot was chosen for it's access inland, distance from the Capitol, and the ability to easily sail ships up to shore. However, it also was fairly open and lacked much in the way of natural cover or places to set up defenses. One had stood out to her which she put a mark near, where the coastline met solid ground. There were three large rock formations, one of which looked like it might have some sort of cave or hollow on one side. Aside from that, the area was fairly flat and would need artificial defenses. Her work with the W.E.F. had brought about a greater appreciation for strategic architecture, so she wanted to lend that expertise here. She handed the notebook back to Nadia and thanked her for it's use.
"Shall we?" Taki said with a smile, her spirit guardians leaping to her side as she started off down towards the coast. While they'd only just landed, establishing a safe perimeter to work outward from would ease much of the tension building. As they were walking, the shaman would conjure Stone Creations from the sand and stone below the surface. Usually not terribly complex, these constructs were roughly caltrop shaped and static. It was still odd to her how effortless it had become, but she figured that learning the intricacies of the Formulae Arcanum helped that along immensely. As they neared the shoreline, she came to a sudden stop, her guardians tensing beside her.
While sandy soil often muddied the detail of Geomagnetic Sense, there was no mistaking the distinct feel of a large creature's heavy footfalls. It wasn't just one either, several were approaching from the coastline. A sly smile crept over the shaman's face as she looked over her shoulder at Javal.
"Looks like you're getting your wish Javal... Spread out everyone, this might get messy."

“No problem miss it is an honor to have you write in my notebook as such I have heard of your exploits. I thank as well for helping out my liege during that other expedition of shamans that we’d worked on before”.
“We shall indeed”, Javal exclaims as he catches up with the others as he walks he is impressed by Taki’s magic. It flowed so flawlessly and effortlessly it was something he wanted to be to do as well. Javal stopped almost running into Taki before Nadia pulled him back by the collar.
He felt that something was coming, something big and not alone, he smirked his heart beating with excitement, “Thankfully let’s just hope whatever’s coming that it’s strong enough to provide a challenge”.
Quickly Meryl and Nadia reach into Javal’s bag to borrow his equipment, Nadia takes out a ray bow, a familiar weapon that is honestly more to her than her liege considering he was no marksman and hardly used it. Meryl pulled out an ignis staff she liked the weapon especially when she used it to smash in foe’s heads. Nadia quickly sprints behind the group positioning herself to provide ranged support while Meryl moves behind Javal but readies herself to assist.
Javal takes out his blade from his belt and unsheathes it exclaiming, “Everyone get ready I can feel it they’re about to come out”.
And suddenly from the coastline surges a band of Emperor Akhlut menacingly glaring at the adventurers. An older looking one seems to be leading a group of younger ones. Squawking and laughing can be heard from them as they charge at the travelers ready to defend their land from newfound prey.

An impish grin crept across Taki's face. It was clear from their posture these Akhlut meant to fight, to feed if possible. Keta and Ryu moved forward, covering the group in their bolstering aura as the orca like creatures began their charge into the fray. Wide mouths of dagger like teeth, and long, curved bear like claws augmented their slick leathery skin. Their powerful limbs tossed plumes of sand and water as they tore loose from the shoreline. Roaring, chittering and squawking their displeasure at these strangers, they charged ahead in defense of their hunting grounds.
Taking a quick look around, Taki understood that she would need to be careful about using most of her spells. With an arcane gesture, five pillars of magical lightning appeared between the groups. Each emitted a field of sparks over a small area, shocking the first of the Akhlut as they reached the barrier. Letting out a wild battlecry, the shaman sprang forward to meet their charge. Her many limbs flexed as her claws extended, colliding with the first of the beasts in her path until the pair ground to a halt. Guttural grunting and posturing accompanied a flurry of blows from both sides.
Using her secondary hands to turn aside the Akhlut's blows, the shaman wore her opponent's body down methodically. Wild eyed, the creature's desperation became apparent as it switched to trying to bite off any of Taki's limbs it might get hold of. With a step back and using the creature's bulk to steady herself, she launched her body skyward as the Akhlut came down for another desperate bite. Her long, prehensile tongue shot out and wrapped around the creature's neck, pulling the shaman down on it's back. With the strength of a bull, and arms infused with the power of a Baloth, her claws dug into the leathery, blubbery flesh. Releasing the beast as it dropped to the ground, she scanned the surroundings looking for new prey.

The fellblood quickly surged forth trying to meet the Akhlut’s halfway not taking a second for worry or hesitation to enter his mind.
Nadia quickly has a focused expression on her face as she pulls back on the ray bow an arrow of light being created within its notch. She aims her shot straight at one of the young brash Akhlut’s heads and fires off the ray bow letting it fly through the air hitting its target in the head and making it stagger back in surprise. Meryl, seeking to clean up quickly, focuses her attention on the Akhlut that Nadia hit, taking advantage of its distracted mind to smash her burning-hot Ignis Staff and its head causing it to squawk in anguish.
Javal rushes forward and immediately looks for the biggest one and begins clashing with the elder-looking Emperor Akhlut who seems to be leading the rest of its kin against them. His sword’s tough steel was equally matched in strength by the fierce tenacity of the beast; its colossal size followed by its biting power and sharp talons gave Javal an incredibly difficult challenge. Javal struggles to even keep up with the leader’s speed as it dodges his sword slashes and follows up with attacks of its own. It manages to land a decent amount of damage on the man as bite marks and talon slashes are already starting to grow on Javal. The blue-toned man pushes past the pain and puts his energy into the next strike swinging his blade across the beast's chest (1) before opening his mouth and sending out a cone of ice (2) aiming it towards its feet.

Spotting another nearby, the shaman shoved her body skyward while spreading her arms ahead in a rough circle of claws, like one diving into an ocean of meat. There was a brief, brilliant flash of white-blue light and a clap of thunder1 that followed from the point where she was falling. A flickering trail of electric arcs and swirling air currents spanned the distance between where she'd been and the Akhlut's now bisected form. Some of the younger, more ambitious beasts halted their charge at the sudden sound and display. The older, larger members of the pod shared their displeasure with their own loud vocalizations.
The pod as a whole halted their charge, backing up towards the shoreline and regrouping. Taki's gaze followed the pack's layout, where she could just barely see the dorsal fin of a slightly smaller member surrounded by the five largest of the group. Probably the matriarch of the pack, the shaman wondered what their next decision would be. She could understand their plight, this was likely their hunting or breeding grounds. Such suitable places weren't easy to find for any group, but they needed to test the fortitude of the newcomers carefully based on the disparate numbers.
Another series of vocalizations passed through the group as they fanned out along the shore in twos and threes. A loud barking sound heralded their next assault, as the Akhlut spread out across the battlefield trying to flank the group from all directions. Taki laughed heartily as she stretched her body and started running for the point where the two groups would meet and complete the ring. About five steps in, the sand and stone in her path peeled away to form a sphere2 with the shaman inside. Using the enhanced strength of her limbs, she steered the growing armored menace over the sandy terrain. The last thing they wanted was to be surrounded, and Taki now had a very serious means of punching through their lines building around her. She'd only cleared about one third the distance, but already the sphere had grown to nearly ten feet thick.

The battlefield pauses for a moment as Shitakibo surged into the battle making everyone even the Drakon Security Company. The armored orochi barreled through the field with the same impact and strength she’d shown before. The battle raged on as Javal and Emperor Akhlut continued their bout.
“I give you this Sir Akhlut you truly are one of the worthiest opponents I have come across in my travels”, the young man shouted as he narrowly avoided a sharp fin to the face. The beast’s hide was rough and able to keep up with the fellblood’s blade. At the moment it felt like a contest of stamina and durability as for every katana slash and drop of blood Javal managed to get the Akhlut did equally as much if not worse. He takes a moment to smash his feet into the ground covering the area with a layer of ice (1). His body was beginning to tire as he smiled once more as the elder beast seemed to be moving slower than before. It truly was to be an endurance competition that the two’s fight would be about.
Over with Javal’s retainers, they managed to focus their attention on the same foe, an excitable young Akhlut that keeps coming for them no matter how many times the moon elf and sun elf land their attacks.
“Really?”, Nadia yells impatient, “Meryl be more focused and attentive your wasting the opportunity I gave you”.
“Shut up and let me just do my job”, the other retainer retorts back, annoyed as she continues to dodge away from the scruffy young Akhlut.
