A swift gale blows across the frozen tundra of the Ice Fields as a large white steed pulls a lonesome ornate carriage. A dreary male dark elf sits atop the driver’s seat, holding the reins of the frozen beast with one hand as the other shields his eyes from the bright sun glistening overhead. A sigh escapes the man’s lips as an inane cackling rings out from the passenger window behind him. It was a rare homecoming for Ulmiyda, who so despised the frigid land of her birth. When Cervayhn had first mentioned returning to Frost Gale, the young girl’s protests resulted in an argument that spanned multiple hours; only ending when her retainer was finally able to state his mission. Reports of caravans disappearing in the Ice Fields had increased, and while normally such reports could be easily written off as victims of the cold or roaming predators, it was the additional notes that piqued the girl’s interest. Massive holes in the ice had been found along the caravans’ last known paths, causing many to speculate about their origin. While the Pale City’s finest investigators had proposed many hypotheses, Ulmiyda had already come to her conclusion. The ice was melting; Frost Gale had finally surrendered to the unyielding power of the sun. The young dark elf unleashes another hysterical laugh as she peeks her head out of the window, gazing upon the bright white snow as it shines in the sun's radiance. “Knock it off already. You’ve been laughing about this for hours.” Cervayhn barks in an annoyed tone as he notices his young master. Ulmiyda pauses her laughter, only to replace it with a smug grin as she looks over to her retainer. “You’re just mad that I’ve already won. Frost Gale will melt and there is nothing you can do will stop it. The future is now, old man.” Cervayhn’s face contorts as he feels a confused offense, taking his master’s comment seriously despite the inane ramblings surrounding it. He whips around, staring into the window with an annoyed expression. “What do you mean old? I’m not old! I’m not even middle-aged!” Ulmiyda ducks back from the window with a grin, clearly satisfied with her retainer’s reaction. With a sigh, Cervayhn turns back to the front of the carriage. “Settle down and keep your eyes open. We are almost to the base of the mountains, that’s where the majority of the holes have been sighted.”
Quest Name: Stone Cold Participants: Two or more Location: Frostgale Post Requirements: 6 post per person, 200 words per post Reward: +1 Renown, +1 Stone, +1 Crystal Eye Description: Traveling through Frost Gale for your own business has lead you across a field of ice. The ice however has unknowingly begun to melt, most likely due to the increase in temperature as a result of Mt. Drakolt. As you travel, the ice beneath you gives way, sending you falling into a dark, frozen chamber beneath the earth. This chamber is not empty however, and is home to three, large, very old Basilisk. The job is simply, survive the Basilisk and escape from your frozen prison.

"WOOOOOOOOH!"
Xalmann let out a sigh and placed a clawed hand on his face as the fire wisp was blown about in the harsh winds. If the spirit wasn't magical, it would have been no surprise if it was suddenly snuffed out. But, for some reason, it actually seemed to be enjoying itself as if being thrown around was some kind of fun ride for it. Xalmann wasn't enjoying the wind at all though. The harsh cold didn't bother him, but icy sleet was blown into his face by the winds, making him squint to keep it from hurting his eyes. The flowers that usually grew on his living wooden arm had all been ripped off in the wind, making his arm that looked like burnt, blackened wood appear even more dead than usual.
Trekking through the snow while Ash, the fire spirit that usually resided inside a hollow in the shoulder of his wooden arm, tumbled through the air around him. Xalmann left a trail of melted snow that refroze almost immediately behind him into a slippery sheet of ice on the ground. The Lizardman was only able to bear being in such a frigid environment thanks to the heat of the fire magic inside him. His cloak billowed out behind him, showing he hadn't even bothered wearing winter clothing, the red and pale yellow scales of his torso on full display, a glowing red mark like a claw slash across his chest.
In front of him, the massive mountains he was approaching loomed over the sheet of white all around him. He wasn't often one to go out of his way to do good deeds like looking into what was causing the disappearances of caravans in the area, but this was another opportunity to help clean up his muddy reputation. Whatever was digging these holes, he just had to kill it and then he could leave. Despite not feeling any of the cold, he still wasn't a fan of this place.
Between the whistles of the wind, Xalmann could hear something behind him. The sounds of hooves and wheels. He looked back to see an ornate carriage nearby, following a parallel path toward the mountain. Wagons and caravans were no surprise to see around here, travelling across the icy plains to save a solar on boat fare for greedy merchants, but what was such an ornate carriage doing around here?

It’s not long before the carriage stops near the base of the mountain. With a heavy sigh, Cervayhn hops down from the driver’s seat, his boots crunching into the heavy snow as he moves to open the passenger door. “Our best option is to ascend up the mountainside, that will give us a better viewpoint for spotting any holes in the ice. If we are lucky, we may be able to see one of these holes form as it happens.” As soon the door opens, Ulmiyda bolts outside, racing up the side of the mountain as she replies to her retainer with a simple “Got it!” The girl’s energy is short-lived however as she quickly realizes mountain climbing is not a skill in her repertoire. Her small frame quickly comes to a rest atop the nearest flat rock she can find. “I keep watch here; someone needs to keep an eye on the carriage after all!” The young girl yells down to her retainer, who was slowly but steadily making his after her. “I figured as much, just sit there and keep your eyes open for anything suspicious.” Her retainer replies with a less than amused expression. Minutes quickly turn to hours as the young absentmindedly stares off into the distance, finding little to stimulate her eager imagination. Her retainer had long since passed her, ascending to the point in which he was just within earshot of her. The girl’s eyelids just begin to betray when a glimmer downhill catches her eye. Ulmiyda’s weariness dissipates immediately as she immediately recognizes the light as flame, and by the way it was moving it was like some manner of living flame. If it hadn’t been for her high viewpoint, the girl would have likely been too entrenched by the flame to see the tall lizard beside it. Her eyes widen as she takes in the sight before she quickly maneuvers behind the rock, using it as cover as she further observes the reptile. They said you were dead, but I know they must be wrong! In a panic the young girl reaches into her satchel, throwing all manner of trinkets out of the fanciful bag before pulling out a small brown leather-bound notebook. Her fingers frantically flip through the pages as she searches for her recently written notes. A large smile creeps across her face as she begins to look between her writings and the reptilekin in front of her. Dragon? That looks like a dragon, just a little on the short side. ✅ Fire magic? That’s definitely some form of fire elemental by them. ✅ Creates plant life around itself? Well, that arm looks like a plant, just a little burnt, so close enough. ✅ The girl claps the book shut as she turns back towards Cervayhn’s direction. “CERVAYHN, I FOUND OUT WHY THE ICE IS MELTING!” The young girl yells with little concern for anyone or anything nearby. She aims a hand behind her, pointing an accusatory finger towards the red lizard. “IT’S VULCADREAUS!”

Xalmann walked toward the distant carriage, slowly trudging through the snow. It yielded in front of him as it melted to his heat, but it still made trekking through the area slow and arduous. Walking on top of it might have been faster, but he couldn't do that since it would just melt beneath him. Sometimes the heat he gave off was more inconvenient than he liked. The carriage had followed a nearly parallel path to his own, toward the base of the mountain, and stopped once it reached it. It took Xalmann a couple of hours to catch up to it. Ash, the little fire wisp being swept around in the heavy winds, didn't seem to mind. They actually looked like they were enjoying themself. At least someone was.
When Xalmann finally reached the foot of the mountain and the carriage, he looked up to see a young girl with a book in her hand looking back down at him. He wasn't very good with reading other people's expressions, especially from such a distance, but even from this far he thought she looked oddly... excited? Who the hell was she and why would she be happy, of all things, to see him?
“CERVAYHN, I FOUND OUT WHY THE ICE IS MELTING! IT’S VULCADREAUS!” Her words echoed down the mountain and left Xalmann stunned.
"Huh?" The normally stoic, emotionless Lizardman let out a sound of confusion that couldn't be heard as another sound filled the air.
The sounds of ice and stone cracking beneath them.

A deep cracking sound rings out from the mountainside as Ulmiyda finishes her sentence. The shaking causes the young girl to lose her balance, falling to her knees as she looks back down to the red lizard.
“Oh no, I’ve angered him! I didn’t know he had sensitive ears! His godly might is going to destroy this mountain just like Drakolt!”
A deep roar comes further up the mountain as snow begins to slide downwards towards her. The miniature avalanche is the least of the young girl’s concerns however as her footing begins to give out beneath her, causing large swathes of snow to disappear. Before the girl has any time to react, she finds herself plummeting into the dark void below.
“WAAHHHHH-” *poof*
The girl’s echoing screaming is cut short as she safely lands face first into a collected snowbank. The girl quickly lifts her head out of the snow, spitting out the cold mass that she had unfortunately caught with her screaming mouth. She looks upwards towards the hole in the rocky ceiling she just fell through.
“CERVAYHN! ARE YOU THERE? DID VULCADREAS GET YOU?”
The girl's questions are met with several seconds of silence before a low noise emerges, not from above, but rather from behind. It's a heavy growl, one that can only come from a creature much larger than her or her retainer. The young girl freezes, going silent as the sound of heavy footsteps upon gravel echos from behind her. The girl's adrenaline kicks in after the initial shock wears off, her hand reflexively moving to scabbard on her back. Her fingers wrap around the hilt of the blade and pull, causing a bright light[1] to emerge from the casing. Ulmiyda turns with her blade fully drawn, laying eyes upon a massive multi-legged reptile whose eyes quickly close due to its intensity of the blade’s light. As the beast recoils and shrieks, Ulmiyda spots a barely lit tunnel to her side.
“AHHHHH!!!” The young girl screams, taking off into the tunnel before the beast has time to recover.

Xalmann slid down chunks of collapsing snowy stone as the ground around him fell. It looked like that girl's shouting had caused an avalanche, and that, seemingly, had caused enough shaking to make some kind of hollow beneath the ground cave in, taking the rock above with it along with the two people standing atop it.
He did his best to remain oriented and prevent himself from being struck by the chunks of falling rock and snow. When he finally reached solid ground, he immediately had to dive out of the way as a huge chunk of rock fell down right where he'd landed. It only took a few seconds for all of the stone to finally settle, but it felt like it took forever, trying not to be bludgeoned on the head.
Xalmann looked around angrily for the girl who had caused this whole mess. Where had she landed? The ground collapsed beneath her too. Had she been buried? Glancing around, the ground was littered with large chunks of stone, but there was surprisingly a lot of open space and less debris than expected. He looked up at the broken edges of the former cave ceiling. Apparently, the top of the hollow had been very close to the surface. No wonder it was on the verge of collapse. The ceiling was only a foot or two thick. It was a wonder it hadn't collapsed already. How had a natural cave structure like this survived so long?
Unless it wasn't a natural cave structure, and hadn't been here for very long.
Xalmann looked around more and saw tunnels along the walls, leading off into the darkness. This had been dug out. Had they just fallen into some huge beast's burrow? Judging by the scream from the girl nearby, there was definitely something down here.
Looking in that direction, Xalmann saw a huge reptilian creature that was recoiling from a sudden flash of blinding light he'd thankfully been looking in the wrong direction to be blinded by himself. The girl was already running off down one of the tunnels to get away from it.
Xalmann stood up, his weapons at the ready, facing the creature. The creature recovered from the flash of light and looked off in the direction of the fleeing girl before noticing the Lizardman and locking eyes with him. Its eyes flashed with a blue light and Xalmann suddenly felt his body go stiff.
"Oh sh-" Xalmann just managed to say before his mouth was frozen in stone as he was petrified by the basilisk's gaze. Unfortunately, in the Marsh Flats, he'd never heard of basilisks before.

Ulmiyda sprints blindly through the tunnel, screaming all the way, before finally slowing to a stop due to exhaustion. As the girl catches her breath, she suddenly feels a rustling from within her satchel, eliciting the smallest semblance of relief within her. Her fingers begin to glow as a small ring of flame forms around her[1], illuminating the cloth bag on her side. As the latches on the satchel open, a tiny head peeks out at the darkness, glimmering as it drowsily looks from side to side. “Whatz all thiz racket for?” the small creature asks as they look up to Ulmiyda, its tiny eyes nearly indistinguishable from the gems adorning its head Ulmiyda's eyes brighten as looks down at the gemstone encrusted Earth Pixie and hastily tries to explain the situation.
“Isha, Isha, Isha, first there was Vulcadreus and then the mountain roared and then the ground gave out and then there was this eight-legged monster that roared and then I ran here and I don't know where Cervayhn is an-” “Calm, calm” the pixie replies as he cuts off the exasperated girl. “You zed that monzter has eight legz right?” “Y-yeah…” the young girl replies timidly. “Zoundz like a bazilisk. You can't look it in the eyez or you turn to ztone.” “How do you know this?” The young girl asks her companion cautiously. The earth pixie stays silent for a moment as it slowly rises into the air, completely ignoring the girl's question. “Zhut your eyez, I will guide you.” The pixie plops down on the girl's white hair, grabbing a clump of her hair with each hand. Ulmiyda winces in discomfort with each pull, still confused as to her pixie’s intentions. “What about you? What if the basilisk looks you in the eyes?” “I’m mostly ztone anyway, it won’t freeze me.”
“Okay… I guess that makes sense…” the dark elf replies, still unsure if the pixie's reasoning is sound. The pixie slowly guides the girl back through the tunnel, in spite of her discomfort, before suddenly pulling back on her hair, eliciting a yelp from the girl. “What was that for?” Ulmiyda asks in an annoyed whisper. “We are nearing the hole, I can feel cold air. The beazt iz cloze. Ztay quiet and follow my wordz.” Isha replies sternly. Sure enough, Ulmiyda feels the cold air slowly descending on her, telling her she was close to her point of entry as well as the awakened monstrosity. As the pair make their way to the open cavern, Isha spots the creature slowly climbing up a small snow mound, approaching a figure frozen in rock, likely to be the long-dormant beast’s long awaited breakfast. “Flare, forward!” the pixie barks as he pulls the right side of Ulmiyda’s hair upwards. The young dark elf winces as she tries to follow the pixie’s command, lifting her right arm straight out and firing off a bolt of flame [2]. Luckily for everyone, the creature’s large size means that accuracy matters little, and the flame impacts the beast’s backside despite the lack of aim on Ulymida's part. The attack does little more than annoy the beast, but it’s enough to turn its attention away from the statue for now. Eyeing up the small girl and creature adorning her head, the beast begins to slowly charge down the hill towards them, opening its wide jaw in eager anticipation of its meal. “Zword, peek, then Boomerz!” The pixie commands with the authority of an army captain. Ulmiyda withdraws her sword with her right hand, allowing the heated gleam [3] to temporarily obscure the oversized lizard’s vision as it charges. Squinting her eyes, the girl can just barely make out the large mass approaching her as well as the pink flesh of its open mouth. Her left-hand darts into her satchel, retrieving a pair of dark orbs [4] that she promptly flings forward as her eyes quickly shut again. Isha watches as the spheres fly forward, one of which crashes and breaks on the beast’s snout, while the other lands and cracks on the soft flesh of the creature’s mouth. “FLARE, FORWARD AND ZPREAD!” The Earth pixie orders as the beast draws near and near with each step. Ulmiyda tilts her right hand down, pointing the tip of blade towards the beast as yet another bolt of flame spawns from it [5]. As the flame flies, the young clenches her glowing left hand into a fist. As the bolt draws near to its target, the girl releases her fingers, causing the bolt to break into five pieces that spread the flames over a much larger area [6]. The Earth pixie’s strategy works surprisingly well, as the bolt successfully ignites both of the black powder spread across the monster’s snout as well as the glass sphere trapped near the beast’s tongue. The strategy is perhaps too effective as the blast is strong enough to cause the beast to rear up in pain, while also launching Ulmiyda backwards due to the close proximity. The basilisk falls to the side in pain, with a substantial portion of its jaw blown away and a portion of its face heavily burned, blinding one of its eyes. Ulmiyda clambers to her feet as she opens her eyes, looking upon the toppled beast with an adrenaline-fueled concern. “D-did we get it?” [1] Flame hoop

At the top of a mound of stone, the stone statue watched silently as the basilisk turned around and headed away to face the newcomer that it saw as another potential meal.
The Lizardman was petrified and unable to move a muscle, all of his flesh suddenly transformed into rock. All of his flesh, but strangely, the wooden arm attached to his left shoulder was unaffected. The arm moved around, feeling the stony visage and statuesque body, trying to make sense of the situation.
Xalmann had never encountered a basilisk before. He was unaware of the reptile's ability to turn anyone it locked eyes with to stone, and had been unprepared for this fight. He'd remember this. He was also unaware that he wasn't supposed to currently be conscious considering his brain was nothing but rock at the moment. It was a strange set of circumstances that made him not be completely defeated in this situation.
Firstly, his connection to the earth domain. Secondly, the arm that was rooted into him, fused into his being to be permanently part of him yet also a separate entity that was unaffected by the basilisk's petrification. The monster couldn't exactly make eye contact with a tangle of roots and vines. And lastly, though this one may or may not be truly a reason he managed to stay conscious, but Xalmann was too fucking angry to die so easily.
The basilisk's attention being diverted had bought him enough time to adapt. The roots of the wooden arm began to spread across the petrified Lizardman, weaving across his torso, up his neck, down his legs, and across his opposite arm until he was covered as if he was a statue that had been left to the elements for years, overgrown with black vines and charred roots.
Cracking sounds could be heard as stone joints began to bend, as Xalmann began to move. An orange glow emerged from the cracks and from the mouth and eyes of the stone Lizardman who began to walk forward. He felt heavy, and much slower than he was used to. His movements were also much less smooth. He started to run down the mound, toward the basilisk that was lying on its side after some explosion had hit it. He wasn't sure what had happened. His senses were dull, as if he was hearing everything from behind a thin stone wall and viewing it through a curtain of falling sand. It didn't matter as long as he could sense his target. His sight may have been bad, but he could feel through the ground where the creature was. All he cared about now was killing this damn basilisk and hopefully turning back to normal.
As Ulmiyda was looking at the fallen basilisk, its remaining eye suddenly shot open again. Thankfully, with one of its eyes destroyed by the explosion, it couldn't make eye contact with her. It snapped back to its feet, ready to lunge at the one who had caused it so much pain, but it suddenly felt a sense of deja-vu as another explosion of flame erupted over its back, making it let out another roar or pain.
Behind it, slowly, jerkily, with the sound of stone scraping against stone, the animated petrified Xalmann was running toward it with his axe in his hand and fury in his eyes.

“WEH!” Ulmiyda yelps as the basilisk begins to stir. In a panic, the young girl darts behind a nearby rock, rather than continuing to engage the beast. Crouched behind the small boulder the girl looks to Isha with an expectant gaze, hoping the pixie has some manner of plan. “What do we do? That thing is invincible!”
The earth pixie stares blankly at the child, wondering how she came to such an assumption after nearly blowing up both herself and the basilisk. Before the pixie can answer the girl, however, the sound of a rocky landslide reaches their ears.
Ulmiyda freezes in place, afraid that the massive, angry beast is rapidly closing in to finish her off. Seeing that the girl is in no state to take any action, pixie flies upward, peeking over the top of the rock to assess the situation. Holding completely still behind the boulder, all Ulmiyda can do is shut her eyes and wait for the inevitable. When the cacophony of stone finally ends, however, the young girl finds herself very much alive and also very confused. She quickly looks from side to side, before finally noticing Isha above her. “What happened? Are we dead?”
The pixie looks back down at the girl and bluntly replies. “The bazilizk is dead, ztone killed it.”
Ulmiyda peeks out from behind the boulder, spotting a figure of rock rising from the now-deceased basilisk. The sight immediately flips the girl’s mood and she takes off running to the figure with renewed vigor. Throwing caution to the wind, the girl grabs onto the statue’s hand, completely ignoring the axe it is holding. “WE ARE SAVED! I KNEW VULCADREAS WOULDN’T LET US PERISH! HE SUMMONED THIS GOLEM TO SAVE US!” the girl shouts in glee.
Isha follows suit, observing the moving statue with an unreadable expression beneath its mask of gems. Taking note of the taking of the stone’s bizarrely lizard-like shape, the pixie attempts to correct Ulmiyda. “I don't think thiz iz a golem. It'z more likely-”
The collected sound of multiple roars echoes from deeper within the cavern, interrupting Isha and frightening Ulmiyda once more. The girl turns, still gripping the rock lizard’s hand, and attempts to pull the statue away from the roars. Her legs run in place, as the child’s strength does little to move the axe-wielding rock. “We need to get out here! It's warmer this way, that must mean there is a way out!”

Xalmann extracted his axe from the skull of the basilisk by summoning the weapon back to his hand. He was glad being turned to stone hadn't affected that ability of his, or prevented him from using his fire magic. The monster would have been much more difficult to defeat without his magic, especially in this state.
Now, he just needed to figure out how to reverse the petrification. He looked at the basilisk. Would it have something in it to turn him back? He wasn't an alchemist, but he could guess something that could turn its food to stone might have a way of turning that stone back into food, right? Unless they actually ate rock... Fuck, he wasn't a basilisk expert either.
Fuck it. He'd just cut the thing open and hope there was something to help him inside. It's not like anything inside it could do something worse to him than turning him into stone, probably.
He was about to raise his axe and start dissecting when his hand was suddenly grabbed by someone. His senses were dulled by the petrification, but he could recognize her voice and appearance. This was the one who shouted something about Vulcardeus before the ice collapsed, and now she was shouting again. Did she just call him a golem? Did he look like a golem?
He tried to speak, but the sounds he made were like someone trying to half groan, half speak while they had their mouth gagged, filled with stones, and trying to be loud enough to be heard over the sounds of someone grinding a stone mill. It was absolutely unintelligible. As if his communications skills weren't already bad enough. Now this.
With the sounds of more roaring, he started walking, letting the girl hold his hand as he went. She was too weak to pull him along, probably even if he wasn't currently a walking block of stone, but she was hopefully guiding him toward an exit. Before walking too far, he used his axe to break off some of the basilisk's teeth and took them with him.
While he wanted to turn back to normal, the roaring didn't sound very far away and he wasn't sure he could handle more than one in a fight right now. Hopefully these teeth had something that could turn him back to normal. It was just a desperate attempt, if anything, but it was something. He wasn't going to chop off a hunk of bloody meat and leave a trail of blood for the monsters to follow, so teeth would have to do.

The sound of dripping water reaches Ulmiyda’s ears as the light at the end of the tunnel slowly grows, causing her excitement to build. The young girl rushes forward with an inhuman speed that only a child could muster, leaving the rocky figure’s side as she dashes towards the light. The tunnel gives way to a chamber far larger than the last. At the center lies a small hill adorned with grass and flowers, bathed in a light shining down from a growing hole in the icy ceiling; the source of the dripping water. A glimmer of light atop the hill catches Ulmiyda’s eye, drawing her towards the strange grassy knoll. Climbing over the flowers, the girl races up the hill, feeling a growing warmth with each step. What awaits her is a pitch-black stone, its surface gleaming as the sunlight leaks down upon it [1]. Ulmiyda's eyes widen as she slowly wraps her fingers around the stone, slowly lifting it as if the entire cavern may collapse around her from its absence. Luckily for her, the ice cavern's structural integrity remains intact as she stares deeply at the warm stone. With a beaming smile, the girl turns back to the tunnel she emerged from, holding the stone high above her head. “Mister Golem! I found what was melting the ice! We can use it to defeat those monsters!” she shouts, her voice echoing throughout the chamber. Whatever response the stone-encased lizard had, it was overtaken by a loud roar from deeper within the tunnel. “WEH!” The Ulmiyda yelps in response to the roar. She looks upwards at the pixie atop her head in a panic, hoping for some manner of strategy from the fae. “Isha what do we do? I thought we would have more time to prepare!” “Calm down. It’z your faultz for yelling.” The earth pixie replies sternly. “Firzt you needz to let the taller one know we are here.” They continue as they yank Ulmiyda’s hair, and eyes, upwards.
The young girl takes aim at the hole in the icy ceiling, before launching a bolt of flame skyward towards the sun[2]. The action does little to calm the girl’s nerves as she stares back to the pixie. ”How do we defeat them though? I’m out of explosives!”
“You need zomething big to face them. Focuz.” Isha calmly replies.
The dark elf begins to whisper as her eyes slowly close and her hands begin to glow. “Just like in the painting, make it real.”
The air a few meters in front of the girl suddenly catches aflame. The fire begins to slowly swirl into as it grows wider and taller, before a set of four legs extend outwards and scorch the ground. The flame isn’t finished however, as five more strands of flame extend out the front, slowly morphing into reptilian-shaped heads[3].
Ulmiyda’s widen as they reopen, reliving the hydra-like flame elemental she managed to create. “Haha, I did it, these creatures are good as cooked!” She exclaims, unaware of the growing frequency of the water droplets.
