A swift gale blows across the frozen tundra of the Ice Fields as a large white steed pulls a lonesome ornate carriage. A dreary male dark elf sits atop the driver’s seat, holding the reins of the frozen beast with one hand as the other shields his eyes from the bright sun glistening overhead. A sigh escapes the man’s lips as an inane cackling rings out from the passenger window behind him. It was a rare homecoming for Ulmiyda, who so despised the frigid land of her birth. When Cervayhn had first mentioned returning to Frost Gale, the young girl’s protests resulted in an argument that spanned multiple hours; only ending when her retainer was finally able to state his mission. Reports of caravans disappearing in the Ice Fields had increased, and while normally such reports could be easily written off as victims of the cold or roaming predators, it was the additional notes that piqued the girl’s interest. Massive holes in the ice had been found along the caravans’ last known paths, causing many to speculate about their origin. While the Pale City’s finest investigators had proposed many hypotheses, Ulmiyda had already come to her conclusion. The ice was melting; Frost Gale had finally surrendered to the unyielding power of the sun. The young dark elf unleashes another hysterical laugh as she peeks her head out of the window, gazing upon the bright white snow as it shines in the sun's radiance. “Knock it off already. You’ve been laughing about this for hours.” Cervayhn barks in an annoyed tone as he notices his young master. Ulmiyda pauses her laughter, only to replace it with a smug grin as she looks over to her retainer. “You’re just mad that I’ve already won. Frost Gale will melt and there is nothing you can do will stop it. The future is now, old man.” Cervayhn’s face contorts as he feels a confused offense, taking his master’s comment seriously despite the inane ramblings surrounding it. He whips around, staring into the window with an annoyed expression. “What do you mean old? I’m not old! I’m not even middle-aged!” Ulmiyda ducks back from the window with a grin, clearly satisfied with her retainer’s reaction. With a sigh, Cervayhn turns back to the front of the carriage. “Settle down and keep your eyes open. We are almost to the base of the mountains, that’s where the majority of the holes have been sighted.”

"WOOOOOOOOH!"
Xalmann let out a sigh and placed a clawed hand on his face as the fire wisp was blown about in the harsh winds. If the spirit wasn't magical, it would have been no surprise if it was suddenly snuffed out. But, for some reason, it actually seemed to be enjoying itself as if being thrown around was some kind of fun ride for it. Xalmann wasn't enjoying the wind at all though. The harsh cold didn't bother him, but icy sleet was blown into his face by the winds, making him squint to keep it from hurting his eyes. The flowers that usually grew on his living wooden arm had all been ripped off in the wind, making his arm that looked like burnt, blackened wood appear even more dead than usual.
Trekking through the snow while Ash, the fire spirit that usually resided inside a hollow in the shoulder of his wooden arm, tumbled through the air around him. Xalmann left a trail of melted snow that refroze almost immediately behind him into a slippery sheet of ice on the ground. The Lizardman was only able to bear being in such a frigid environment thanks to the heat of the fire magic inside him. His cloak billowed out behind him, showing he hadn't even bothered wearing winter clothing, the red and pale yellow scales of his torso on full display, a glowing red mark like a claw slash across his chest.
In front of him, the massive mountains he was approaching loomed over the sheet of white all around him. He wasn't often one to go out of his way to do good deeds like looking into what was causing the disappearances of caravans in the area, but this was another opportunity to help clean up his muddy reputation. Whatever was digging these holes, he just had to kill it and then he could leave. Despite not feeling any of the cold, he still wasn't a fan of this place.
Between the whistles of the wind, Xalmann could hear something behind him. The sounds of hooves and wheels. He looked back to see an ornate carriage nearby, following a parallel path toward the mountain. Wagons and caravans were no surprise to see around here, travelling across the icy plains to save a solar on boat fare for greedy merchants, but what was such an ornate carriage doing around here?

It’s not long before the carriage stops near the base of the mountain. With a heavy sigh, Cervayhn hops down from the driver’s seat, his boots crunching into the heavy snow as he moves to open the passenger door. “Our best option is to ascend up the mountainside, that will give us a better viewpoint for spotting any holes in the ice. If we are lucky, we may be able to see one of these holes form as it happens.” As soon the door opens, Ulmiyda bolts outside, racing up the side of the mountain as she replies to her retainer with a simple “Got it!” The girl’s energy is short-lived however as she quickly realizes mountain climbing is not a skill in her repertoire. Her small frame quickly comes to a rest atop the nearest flat rock she can find. “I keep watch here; someone needs to keep an eye on the carriage after all!” The young girl yells down to her retainer, who was slowly but steadily making his after her. “I figured as much, just sit there and keep your eyes open for anything suspicious.” Her retainer replies with a less than amused expression. Minutes quickly turn to hours as the young absentmindedly stares off into the distance, finding little to stimulate her eager imagination. Her retainer had long since passed her, ascending to the point in which he was just within earshot of her. The girl’s eyelids just begin to betray when a glimmer downhill catches her eye. Ulmiyda’s weariness dissipates immediately as she immediately recognizes the light as flame, and by the way it was moving it was like some manner of living flame. If it hadn’t been for her high viewpoint, the girl would have likely been too entrenched by the flame to see the tall lizard beside it. Her eyes widen as she takes in the sight before she quickly maneuvers behind the rock, using it as cover as she further observes the reptile. They said you were dead, but I know they must be wrong! In a panic the young girl reaches into her satchel, throwing all manner of trinkets out of the fanciful bag before pulling out a small brown leather-bound notebook. Her fingers frantically flip through the pages as she searches for her recently written notes. A large smile creeps across her face as she begins to look between her writings and the reptilekin in front of her. Dragon? That looks like a dragon, just a little on the short side. ✅ Fire magic? That’s definitely some form of fire elemental by them. ✅ Creates plant life around itself? Well, that arm looks like a plant, just a little burnt, so close enough. ✅ The girl claps the book shut as she turns back towards Cervayhn’s direction. “CERVAYHN, I FOUND OUT WHY THE ICE IS MELTING!” The young girl yells with little concern for anyone or anything nearby. She aims a hand behind her, pointing an accusatory finger towards the red lizard. “IT’S VULCADREAUS!”

Xalmann walked toward the distant carriage, slowly trudging through the snow. It yielded in front of him as it melted to his heat, but it still made trekking through the area slow and arduous. Walking on top of it might have been faster, but he couldn't do that since it would just melt beneath him. Sometimes the heat he gave off was more inconvenient than he liked. The carriage had followed a nearly parallel path to his own, toward the base of the mountain, and stopped once it reached it. It took Xalmann a couple of hours to catch up to it. Ash, the little fire wisp being swept around in the heavy winds, didn't seem to mind. They actually looked like they were enjoying themself. At least someone was.
When Xalmann finally reached the foot of the mountain and the carriage, he looked up to see a young girl with a book in her hand looking back down at him. He wasn't very good with reading other people's expressions, especially from such a distance, but even from this far he thought she looked oddly... excited? Who the hell was she and why would she be happy, of all things, to see him?
“CERVAYHN, I FOUND OUT WHY THE ICE IS MELTING! IT’S VULCADREAUS!” Her words echoed down the mountain and left Xalmann stunned.
"Huh?" The normally stoic, emotionless Lizardman let out a sound of confusion that couldn't be heard as another sound filled the air.
The sounds of ice and stone cracking beneath them.

A deep cracking sound rings out from the mountainside as Ulmiyda finishes her sentence. The shaking causes the young girl to lose her balance, falling to her knees as she looks back down to the red lizard.
“Oh no, I’ve angered him! I didn’t know he had sensitive ears! His godly might is going to destroy this mountain just like Drakolt!”
A deep roar comes further up the mountain as snow begins to slide downwards towards her. The miniature avalanche is the least of the young girl’s concerns however as her footing begins to give out beneath her, causing large swathes of snow to disappear. Before the girl has any time to react, she finds herself plummeting into the dark void below.
“WAAHHHHH-” *poof*
The girl’s echoing screaming is cut short as she safely lands face first into a collected snowbank. The girl quickly lifts her head out of the snow, spitting out the cold mass that she had unfortunately caught with her screaming mouth. She looks upwards towards the hole in the rocky ceiling she just fell through.
“CERVAYHN! ARE YOU THERE? DID VULCADREAS GET YOU?”
The girl's questions are met with several seconds of silence before a low noise emerges, not from above, but rather from behind. It's a heavy growl, one that can only come from a creature much larger than her or her retainer. The young girl freezes, going silent as the sound of heavy footsteps upon gravel echos from behind her. The girl's adrenaline kicks in after the initial shock wears off, her hand reflexively moving to scabbard on her back. Her fingers wrap around the hilt of the blade and pull, causing a bright light[1] to emerge from the casing. Ulmiyda turns with her blade fully drawn, laying eyes upon a massive multi-legged reptile whose eyes quickly close due to its intensity of the blade’s light. As the beast recoils and shrieks, Ulmiyda spots a barely lit tunnel to her side.
“AHHHHH!!!” The young girl screams, taking off into the tunnel before the beast has time to recover.

Xalmann slid down chunks of collapsing snowy stone as the ground around him fell. It looked like that girl's shouting had caused an avalanche, and that, seemingly, had caused enough shaking to make some kind of hollow beneath the ground cave in, taking the rock above with it along with the two people standing atop it.
He did his best to remain oriented and prevent himself from being struck by the chunks of falling rock and snow. When he finally reached solid ground, he immediately had to dive out of the way as a huge chunk of rock fell down right where he'd landed. It only took a few seconds for all of the stone to finally settle, but it felt like it took forever, trying not to be bludgeoned on the head.
Xalmann looked around angrily for the girl who had caused this whole mess. Where had she landed? The ground collapsed beneath her too. Had she been buried? Glancing around, the ground was littered with large chunks of stone, but there was surprisingly a lot of open space and less debris than expected. He looked up at the broken edges of the former cave ceiling. Apparently, the top of the hollow had been very close to the surface. No wonder it was on the verge of collapse. The ceiling was only a foot or two thick. It was a wonder it hadn't collapsed already. How had a natural cave structure like this survived so long?
Unless it wasn't a natural cave structure, and hadn't been here for very long.
Xalmann looked around more and saw tunnels along the walls, leading off into the darkness. This had been dug out. Had they just fallen into some huge beast's burrow? Judging by the scream from the girl nearby, there was definitely something down here.
Looking in that direction, Xalmann saw a huge reptilian creature that was recoiling from a sudden flash of blinding light he'd thankfully been looking in the wrong direction to be blinded by himself. The girl was already running off down one of the tunnels to get away from it.
Xalmann stood up, his weapons at the ready, facing the creature. The creature recovered from the flash of light and looked off in the direction of the fleeing girl before noticing the Lizardman and locking eyes with him. Its eyes flashed with a blue light and Xalmann suddenly felt his body go stiff.
"Oh sh-" Xalmann just managed to say before his mouth was frozen in stone as he was petrified by the basilisk's gaze. Unfortunately, in the Marsh Flats, he'd never heard of basilisks before.
