The finals of the tournament were upon them. With a picnic basket and a little luck, Shaa and Leandros had managed to survive a three way fight that left one fighter dead and a basilisk an entry on the list of things Shaa would rather not fight again. After winning their round, Shaa and Leandros headed back to Gazablaak to catch a shower and rest up for the fight.
There was a lot of money riding on the fight so the pair were accompanied by a pair of surly bodyguards. The official line was that the body guards were there to make sure nobody messed with them before the fight. The truth was that they were there to make sure they showed up for the fight with the pits latest plaything Sweeg the Undaunted. Shaa had never seen Sweeg personally but he had heard enough of the stories about him that he could have written a small book.
Sweeg had been the champion for the last three months. The story was broken but somehow went like he was recruited somewhere out of the crescent isles some months back. Half Orc half…something else… Sweeg had apparently been abandoned on a deserted island for years. He grew up there, fending for himself, fishing hunting. He eventually grew into a capable survivalist and fighter.
Eventually, a group of pirates found him on the island. They tried to kill him for his meager possessions. Much to their surprise, the wild man fought them back. The pirates were so impressed with his prowess, that they offered to make him a member of the crew and a trip home. He accepted the offer and sailed back the mainland. The pirates introduced him to the best fighting teachers. He became more and more deadly as time went on.
After he had finished honing his techniques, he took the advice of the pirates and came to the pits to make money as a champion l and he has been here ever since.
Shaa turned to Leandros. Sounds like a whole lot of Gnoll poop if you ask me. I’m sure he’s a good fighter, don’t get me wrong. If we should worry about anything, we should worry about Marvena. If this champion is her boy, that could be a problem. Marv himself would never allow favoritism like that, bad for business. But marvena is something else. If I know her, there is going to be some sort of wrinkle to this fight. She does have a flair for the dramatic as you probably noticed. Shaa pulled a bug gulp of his mug and looked over at their supposed body guards. The two kept their distance but Shaa could feel their eyes following them.
Anyway, one way or another, that will be the end of it. How are feeling?

Leandros had left with somewhat mixed feelings last night. It was hard to get your first booing, but it was quickly tossed aside. Thinking on Shaa's words helped him to see that it was just people bitter to be separated from their coin. It was unfortunately understandable.
Oh well, he wasn't going to dwell on it for long. The money he had made from that fight was donated as quickly as he could find a place. The knight didn't spend much of the rest of the night thinking about the fight or tomorrow.
The bodyguards were an annoyance, but once more it was chalked up to just another thing he would have to put up with. The charm of being a pit fighter, he supposed. He had his arms crossed over his chest as they sat and took in their breakfast.
"It's more interesting if he has some sort of story I suppose. A guy who's been fighting a long time is dull, but if even half that is true? That's exciting." The knight uncrossed his arms to take a drink.
"She was two people going up against one, I would not be surprised if there is some wrinkle intended to even the field so to speak." He looks over to the minotaur and shrugged. "I have not put much thought in to it, to be honest. It is another fight, I am prepared for whatever may come. I have to make it through to go home to my wife and I have to make sure you get home to join us for dinner, so our victor is already likely."

Yeah. He said while chewing slowly on some jam and bread. It’s a fight alright. To your point, she wouldn’t set it two against one without some other element to make it interesting. The question is …what? Shaa continued to gnaw on his breakfast and mull it over. He had been in so many fights at this point, it was hard to guess what she would come up with. If he was being honest, her dropping the basilisk in there still bothered him.
Despite the high risk of pit fighting, actual death was actually a bad thing from a business perspective. Death meant a loss of fighters to fight. Death meant family members looking for vengeance, questions of inheriting whatever weapons or items were left. Properly disposing of the body. It was a lot more hassle than jusy patching up your fighter , raking in the money and calling it a day. With all that in mind, a creature like a basilisk naturally comes with a high body count in most cases. Not to mention, if they had lost, someone would have had to go in and get it back in the crate. It was too much hassle to do, what was she thinking? It was looking at a puzzle with just enough missing pieces to only guess at the picture. It was maddening.
As the two finished up, one of the body guards walked over. The guard was a large older man in worn brown leather armor and a scar across his face. He had a scruffy goatee that encircled the smelly cigar he was smoking. The look from behind his cool grey eyes told Shaa that he knew what he was doing. Come now my little fairy princesses. It’s time to back to the castle. Your prince is waiting for you. Shaa rolled his eyes and took another pull from his mug.
Yeah yeah meat sack. We are almost done. You can tell your mama that she’s is going to get her fight today, no worries. The guard shifted in his feet a bit, boots scraping across the dirty wood slatted floor. As much fun as we have had babysitting you two, I am not looking for this to go any longer than needed. Shockingly, I have other things to do today. Let’s go. The man got a steely look on his face. Shaa exhaled with annoyance. Fine whatever. Lee, you ready to go out the hurt on this guy? Shaa tossed a piece of bread up in the air and missed it coming down, hitting his snout and falling to the floor. It left a streak of jam on his face which he happily licked off as he chuckled.

"Nothing is off the table, that is for sure. I wouldn't get caught up in the what-ifs though. Fear is the mindkiller, though I am not concerned about nerves getting to you."
Leandros smiles a bit and pats his shoulder as Lee turns back to finishing breakfast. It was obvious the knight wasn't blowing this off, but he had a confidence in himself that didn't leave much room for worry in these situations.
It probably helped that he was relatively unfamiliar with these situations. Knowing nothing about the fighting pits meant he didn't have knowledge of past tricks and bouts to even begin speculating on. It was somewhat freeing to just face the fight in front of you.
He ignores the guard as they are led in, no need to stoop to the man's level. There was a reason he was a bodyguard and not doing something more impactful with his skills. The man probably wasn't easy to take down, but he wasn't tough enough to not be a lackey.
"Let's go." He nods to the minotaur and sets his expression to a soft, but stern look. He was ready for this next fight whatever may come.....hopefully at least.

It doesn’t take long for the 44 men make the shirt trip back to the fight pits. Fed, washed and refreshed, Shaa is feeling good and ready to end this. As they come down the road, he notices that decorations have been added to flags down the road leading into the square before the pit. As the enter the square, several people are rushing around the gambling biard, talking about the coming fight. One conversation in particular caught Shaa’s attention.
Two goblins, dressed in work clothes and looking particularly ragged, were grousing with each other off to the side by some broken building material. Argh, we be working all night. Pay is good, but I is tired. The second goblin nodded in agreement. Yes , we work so hard. Dwarf boss is so mean. Yell at us all night. But we done. Yes done, now just the fight.
Shaa walks over to the two goblins. Hey you two. What kept you up all night? Aww we work hard and build big…. The goblin finally notices who he is talking to and immediately shuts up. A big what? Shaa presses. We can no tell you! You find out soon enough! You all die! Die! The two goblins get a nervous look on their face and take off down a side street. Well, that wasn’t encouraging. What in the world could they have been working on? The two bodyguards grunt a bit. Those two are lucky. Had they said anything, I would have snapped their necks. Cute. The two pointed towards the ramps. You guys head down there. There will be prep people waiting for you. We didn’t bet on you hahaha. Shaa turns to Leandros. Well don’t I feel like the prettiest girl at the ball? What does everyone else know?
As they head down the ramps that lead into the staging area, Shaa notices something. There is a very loud buzzing noise that is coming from the pit that he doesn’t recognize. One of the staging reps, a tall blonde woman, walks up to them with a glass jar in her hand. Gentlemen, welcome. This is the finals and there are some things you need to know. Will get started in about 30 minutes. Please take a seat. The staging area hasps more food, tables, chairs and several benches. Shaa chooses one of the benches and sits down, trying to ignore the buzzing sound and focus on what the woman has to say. Shaa also notices a small halfling with some papers standing off to the side.

He watches the goblins run off with a curious gaze, wholly unimpressed with the guard's threat of violence. Easy for men like that to pick on those beneath them, it was a truer sign of weakness than anything in Leandros' mind.
"Clearly something is going on, this looks more like a last meal than just offering food for the fighters." He looks around the room, not trusting anything in here in the slightest.
The knight does eventually come to take a seat near Shaa, looking towards the arena. There was a lot going on, definitely a lot more than yesterday. They clearly wanted to step their game up after yesterday, but what exactly was happening behind the scenes?
"If they were building something and given all the noise, I wouldn't find it impossible, perhaps they've built some sort of obstacles or hazards....I wouldn't be surprised if they try to hamper you the most. You have the larger reputation here and they know more about your fighting....Perhaps they hope if they hinder you enough I will somehow be caught off guard or too scared to fight....If that is the case, then this will be a lot easier than I thought."

Shaa stares at the woman with the jar curiously. What in the world was that loud noise? He was very familiar with the sounds of all sorts of crowds and that wasn’t it. It sounded like someone found a bunch of chalkboards and decided to rub them together all at the same time. It was starting to give him a headache.
The woman got close to them and handed the jar over to Shaa for closer inspection. Forgive the noise she said. I am not sure anyone has ever gotten so many of these things tighter in one spit before. Should be interesting. Shaa looks inside 5ge jar and sees 4 large black bugs with tough armor, large pincers and a large horn jutting out of their heads. What you are looking at are flesh beetles. Normally pretty tame, taxidermists use them to clean flesh from bone for preservation purposes. We took them and, with a little magic, made them a bit more aggressive than that. One of the beetles started tapping on the jar violently. Just adorable aren’t they?
The woman takes back the jar, gives it a shake and looks back at them. As you have probably guessed from the noise, the entire floor of the pit is covered with these little beautiful beasts from end to end. Anyone stupid enough to step in there will be stripped to the bone in minutes, we have already lost a couple of careless goblins from the crew. Oh! Realization crosses the woman’s face. Oh, pardon me, I got so excited I almost forgot. My name is Tetra, I am one of the chief animal handlers here in the pit. As it happened, Shaa had seen the woman hanging around before but had never had the occasion to meet her. It was starting to make sense. The basilisk, one of yours? She shakes her head a bit, tossing her blonde hair around. No no, I raise most of my babies, they only recently acquired that…creature. Well anyway, good luck you two.
The woman steps aside and the halfling steps up. He pushes his glasses back up his face, looking at them with a bit of a glare. I am Balfour, lead project manager for this debacle. The blonde woman laughs at the description. It’s not funny! These platforms weren’t supposed to rolled out for another three months. Three months! We tested them as much as we could last night but… Balfour got a distant look in his eyes as if he was thinking about something for the millionth time. It will be fine. It’s fine. He says to no one in particular. Then, turning back to the fighters, he clears his throat. You two. When the bell sounds, the doors there will open. You will have about 1 minute to get to the platform. Any longer than tha,t and the beetles will spill over and end the fight before it even starts. 1 minute to go, climb up to the platforms, got it?
He pulls out a cigar, lights it, and starts to work on it. So, you think you all are going to win? Of course you do. They always think that, if you die out there, don’t blame me ok? I don’t need any ghosts haunting my bodega. Any questions?

Oh great. Beetles. He sighs as the woman goes through her explanation about these bugs and then the halflings speech about the platform. There was the complication they were expecting. It seems they were betting on at least one of them falling in and dying to even out the score.
This also left them with an interesting predicament. Similar to the last bout do they focus on the obstacle or the real target? Shaa seemed resourceful enough that he wasn't worried about the minotaur, but the knight didn't have much to avoid falling.
"So, how are we attacking this? I don't have many aerial manuevers." He looked over to Shaa to see how he is feeling about this. Leandros looked over the ramp to see as much into the arena as he could to try and get a sense of this all.
After Shaa's answer he looks down to Balfour, "Is this to the death or do you plan on calling off the beetles if either this champion or both of us are knocked out?"
The answer wouldn't change his feelings about this fight, but it was important to know the stakes of this fight. It also let him know if he could offer mercy to his opponent should the opportunity arise.

Shaa chuckles a bit. How to attack this is the question isn’t it. They put in a set up that makes all of my Terramancy useless. I useually just bust through things but being reckless on rickety platforms.. Hey! Ahem, recently and quickly put together with care and skill platforms… Balfour puts some creases in his forehead. Would be problematic. Or, it would have been 6 months ago before I became an elementalist. I have lots of ways to avoid falling. You however…. Shaa thinks for a minute and pulls out a blue and white scarf from his bag. Here, I want you to wear this. Just till the fight is over. He holds out the scarf and offers it to Leandros. It’s magic. If you fall it will slow your decent enough for you to maneuver to safety…or for me to help. We will play it by ear.
After their discussion. Leandros turns his attention to Balfour who looks annoyed with the question. Noooo. He says with a grimace. The fights here are never to the death. Aherm! It is now Tetra’s turn to look annoyed as she coughs loudly at Balfour. Balfour rolls his eyes and tries his best to ignore the interruption. It’s never to the death FOR FIGHTERS. Killing off the creatures happens all of the time. And, of course, if someone dies in the act of fighting well…that’s just part of the risk of the sport isn’t it? He takes a moment to shuffle the papers in his hands that have come loose a bit. But to answer your question newbie, you just have to incapacitate him. Can’t move, goes unconscious, gets stuck, all counts. He pauses for just a moment considering his next words. Or ya know..dies. But again, death is NOT a requirement. A lot goes into these guys. Not that allllll people pay attention to that kind of thing. He shoots a daggery look at Shaa who decides to avoid his gaze by looking innocently at the ceiling.
Just then, two young goblins pop into the staging area and start waving at Balfour furiously. He takes a deep sigh and snaps at them. Now what? One of the goblins whispere something in his ear and he gets a pained look on his face like he just ate something really sour. Fine, fine, I’ll be right there. The two goblins run off and Balfour starts to walk away after them. I have some last minute business to address. You two wait here for the signal. Remember, Bell, one minute. Don’t mess around and you should have plenty of time to get up the ramp to the platforms above the pit. The fight starts when the bell sounds so whomever gets up there first will have the advantage. Good luck. With that, Balfour hot foots out of the staging area towards one of the audience stands.
Free flow Scarf:0 ( mystic archive) This accessory is remarkably adept at catching the wind quickly and reducing the speed of a fall to a safe velocity before the wearer has dropped more than ten feet. Leandros takes the scarf and nods, tucking it into his armor before looking out over the field again. Balfour sure used a lot of words to not really say anything at all. Sure, they may not make death a requirement, but they don't seem to take any big considerations into making sure no one days. Especially if you are going to cover the ground in these beetles.
The knight takes a deep breath to calm himself before exhaling slowly. He flexes and stretches a bit, just to get loose as the halfling keeps talking. Get to the bell.....fine enough.
"I have reach with my halberd, I can try and control this champion's position if you want to try and get in close...If either of us fall, let's work on getting the other out. I should have some time with all of my armor, but I would like to not rely on that."
He looks over to Shaa to see if this plan would be agreeable. As the crowd comes to life, he follows after the minotaur, ready for the next round of chaos they were sure to find."

Yeah, sounds good to me…it’s fine. Shaa’s mind was already starting to focus. He was there but not there as he does last minute stretches and checks to make sure he is limber and ready to go. Tetra waves at them as she exits the staging area. Shaa could hear the sounds of large chains being pulled from the other side of the heavy wooden door leading to the pit. It was only a matter of time now.
Suddenly, the sounds of the chains stopped and only the chittering sounds of flesh beetles and the din of the crowd could be heard. Shaa could tell the crowd was cheering and booing so they must be doing the introductions at this point. He hoped for Leandros sake that some people would cheer for them. As a Minotaur, playing the villain was second nature to him so the boos didn’t bother him at all. But, he had to admit, it was nice being the hero every once in awhile.
The crowd goes eerily quiet. He looks around the room to see if he’s missing anything. The only other things with them are the seats, the table and a small lantern that’s flickering in the distance. Lee…get ready…
Out of nowhere, a large bell rings and the wooden door flings open. As he saw it, Shaa could not believe that they had managed to build so much over night. In front of them was a wooden ramp that lead 30 feet into the air to a series of platforms high above them. The platforms themselves, a work of genius, where held up by a rope and pulley system meaning they could change hight at any time. Shaa only had a moment to marvel as he noticed the first beetle try to skitter up the ramp. Lee run!
Shaa takes off up the ramp praying that was as sturdy as it looked. He dared not try any speed boosting maneuvers with the slats being as tenuous as they were. They are halfway up to the first platform when he sees the platform start collapsing behind them. No doubt a safety feature to keep the beetles off the platforms, Shaa can here plank after plank folding behind him. He dares to put on a bit more speed when one of his hooves crashes through the ramp. Crap crap crap crap crap.
Shaa twists and wiggles a bit in an effort to break free. With a final yank, Shaa pulls his foot loose and makes a jump for the platform. He manages to grab the edge right befor the ramp collapses underneath him. With a quick pull, he gets himself on the platform and dusts himself off. Whooo that was close. Shaa almost relaxes until he sees their opponent staring at them from a different platform on the other side of the pit.

Boos or cheers don't really impact Leandros too heavily, being booed is a new and strange sensation, but with no expectations of ever coming back to fight in this place he didn't care about the reputation he had in here. He takes the slow walk up the ramp with Shaa, similarly impressed by the worksmanship of this place.
When the match begins and everything starts to happen, the knight splits off from Shaa to distribute their weight. He was light on his feet in his armor, but there was still a lot of mass moving around. Once he reaches a spot that's stable for a moment he lets out a breath and looks back to check on Shaa. Good, they both found a spot to stop for the moment.
Leandros gaze then reaches across the battlefield to their opponent. It was easy to tell this person wasn't entirely smoke and mirrors, the scars were proof of their battle experience. There is also a confidence to them that is almost certain of their victory already.
Slowly he starts to circle around and try to get over to the platform where this person is.
"I promise you won't die today, but your streak is going to be broken." Leandros calls out trying to get their attention and let Shaa do a bit of sneaking.
"BAH, you two puny weaklings don't have a chance. I can't wait to see the beetles carve you open like a can opener!" The boast is accompanied by a deep and rumbling laugh.

Shaa could hear the creak of the wooden platform under his hooves as he maneuvered to the other side. One of the things he missed about being a pure Terramancer was the feeling of stability that it provided. You were big, tough, unmoving. Up here, swinging above the chattering hoards of flesh eating beetles, nothing felt solid.
Swweg seemed to be having no problems at all with the situation. This was Shaa’s first time to get a really good look at him. Not ideal fight prep but you got what you could get. Sweeg was a bit like Shaa had pictured from the stories but with a couple differences. He had a striking green parlor with yellow eyes that Shaa could see even from this distance. He had several weapons and only light armor held together with leather straps. The half Orc was tall but he wasn’t bulky like Shaa. He was lithe and slender, like a ranger or an athlete. If Shaa had to guess what the other half was, maybe an elf? If he was half elf, that could be a problem. Light armor, slender frame, this guy was big but built for speed. With possibly an elf’s agility. Crap.
Being so high in the air, they were almost level with the audience. Shaa could hear all the noise and jeering in full stereo as he planned his next move. This is the end for you Bull Man. The monster is finally going down. Go Sweeg! We have 100 on you! Leandros looked to be getting the Champions attention but Shaa wasn’t stupid enough to believe he was going to catch him by surprise.
Trying to get a better angle on him, he hops to a smaller adjoining platform. As he does so, suddenly the platform drops beneath him and plummets 5 feet before coming to a stop. Shaa noticed as he was falling that another platform on the side raised by presumably the same distance. They weren’t just raised, some of them were on a pulley system. Before he could react, he watched as Sweeg, holding some sort of log, launches himself onto the corresponding platform he just raised. No no dang it! Sweeg comes slamming down on the raised platform. Shaa can feel his platform being pulled roughly upwards, launching him into the air vertically.
As Shaa comes down yet again, Sweeg ditches the log and bends his knees. As Shaa comes down hard on his platform, Sweeg uses his rising platform as a catapult, launching himself right at Leandros.

Sweeg does definitely strike a lot different of a figure than the knight was expecting. This made a lot more sense, someone quick against two bigger folk on unsettled ground did come across as a more fair fight.
Leandros steadies himself on the platform before moving to another one in an attempt to get close. He watches the display with Shaa with some concern. This man seemed to have a much better understanding of how this all worked. Was he fed information about this beforehand?
He has little time to consider that before the half-orc is flying at him. Leandros readies his halbed and brings it down hard, extending the reach to make sure he makes contact before the man does.[1] The hammer cracks into his head and knocks Sweeg towards the ground, but Lee's weight and force crumples the wooden tower.
Thanks to the scarf, he recovers and drifts to another platform, but the half-orc survives by grabbing on to a platform. He pulls himself back up with a flip, rubbing his head with a grunt.
"GONNA TAKE MORE THAN THAT TIN CAN!" He roars out as the crowd joins in on the roaring and cheering. The half-orc launches himself across the way, club brandished as he comes for Shaa while the minotaur is still regaining his balance.

Shaa blinks hard a couple of times and shakes his head to get himself right. What in Ginma’s green bushy beard was that!? Had he just? Did that guy just? Shaa wasn’t sure if he should be angry or just impressed. Would it ok to be both? Right off the bat, this island nobody from wherever just made the interim captain of the Fighters Guild look like a chump. He was just glad Athena wasn’t here to see this. Wherever she was.
So he was fast and agile. Shaa had already guessed as much. And apparently he was already super familiar with the set up or just had some crazy sick instincts. Knowing Marvena it was probably something closer to the former. Shaa wobbled a bit as he tried to right himself on the platform. Watching from a distance, he was too low to see Leandros but he could see the half Orc coming. The champion had the high ground. Shaa needed to change that and change it fast.
Shaa holds out a finger. As he does, it starts to sparkle and crackle with electricity. Sweeg can see it coming and he picks up the pace of his attack. He leaps after Shaa, club in his hand ready to strike. Instead of shooting the lightning bolt at Sweeg, Shaa quietly points his finger at Sweeg’s original platform and fires the bolt at one of the posts. When he does, Shaa vanishes from the lower platform and reappears next the post he fired at. As Shaa rematerializes, he can feel jolts of electricity build up inside his body.
As Sweeg’s strike comes down into nothing but empty air, he looks over at the Minotaur staring at him from his own platform. They said that you were kind of tricky. I would never have believed that a Minotaur could be anything more than a mindless feral beast. Shaa just shrugs his shoulders. You will never believe the kind of misconceptions that you’ve had once you live long enough to see them. I’m also one hell of a baker if you can believe that. Your buddy over there whacked me in the head. I’m going to take his just so you know. That one’s feisty, I wouldn’t underestimate him. I wouldn’t underestimate me. The fighter retorted.
Sweeg runs and jumps off the platform to a hanging rope that he uses to haul himself up to the main level. Shaa watches him carefully wondering what in the world he could be up to. Sweeg just smiles at him and let’s out a horrible scream. Wondering if he’s lost it, the spell hits him like a ton of bricks. Suddenly all Shaa can hear are loud screams and wails ringing in his ears. He tembers a similar spell from before. He tries hard to focus but finds it extremely difficult to think about his next move or anything else other than the incessant screaming. He manages to focus long enough to see that Sweeg has vanished.

Their hearing will instantly be filled with extremely loud howling, crying and screaming, making them unable to hear anything else for the next two post. They will also find it hard to focus, losing concentration while the screaming persist. This spell can be cleansed by a mind altering cleansing spell.
Invisibility You cause a shimmer to fall over your body as your entire person becomes invisible. You become transparent and incredible hard to see, both while moving or standing still. Anyone just glancing or looking at you will find it impossible to see you, however the more you move the more it breaks the effect, meaning attacking someone or casting a spell will cause you to become visible for a few moments.
