Nephele was so close to breaking down, the only thing keeping her from doing so was seeing the anxiety and relief wracking C’Leena’s body. She was shaking horribly, but at least she wasn’t in danger of passing out. When she surged forward to kiss her, Nephele nearly tripped over her own steps in her rush to return the affection, her hands automatically gliding up to C’Leena’s face to wipe invisible tears.
However, Nephele’s tears weren’t ceasing. In fact, it seemed to have only gotten worse when C’Leena put the ring on her finger, and offered her the matching one. Wordlessly, Nephele huffed out a wet laugh, shakily moving to put the ring on C’Leena’s finger. She was eternally grateful that they were lowered onto their knees, Nephele automatically moving closer. Gods, how did this happen? She must have been a true hero in her previous life.
“Who in their right mind would say no to you?” Nephele managed after a moment of trying to slow her breathing, laughing with a brittle smile. She was probably going to be well and fully dehydrated before they left. C’Leena’s words to Rose were so sweet that Nephele audibly sobbed into her shoulder, digging her nails into the back of her shirt.
With a shaky, wet sniff, eventually Nephele lets herself be maneuvered to the edge of the roof, almost too reluctant to let go just yet. She lets C’Leena go though, hearing her words as she’s reminded of where they were. The effects in her eyes don’t stop, still warping as her mind surges through her emotions. Slowly, she brought herself to sit, still wiping her tears.
“Ah, you’re right,” Nephele sniffles, trying her damnedest to control her expressions. It was, unsurprisingly, not working. Thankfully though, C’Leena offered her an arm to hide under. She was practically curled up into her side. “I’m sorry I’m so gross.” She added, sheepishly wiping her face with her sleeve. “How could I forget?”
Nephele directed her gaze upward, staring at the stars. They almost looked unreal, like she could pluck one from the sky itself like it were an ornate ceiling. The constellations stretched for miles upon miles, all out of reach. Her face had been etched into a wide smile, her eyes unable to completely stay focused on the stars as she looked at C’Leena.
“…Thank you,” It was brief, a quiet scratch of the throat, “for waiting for me, even if it was only a couple of hours.” Nephele breathed in the smell of the air, it chilling her exposed skin and having her curl into C’Leena’s side tighter.
