Nax looked down at their now splintered sword, shocked and befuddled.
They had been practicing their super awesome seven-steps-down-to-hell-downward-strike maneuver on a small sapling, as they did every morning. It was a good workout, and they felt like they were getting close to mastering this new ultimate power move they had come up with by themselves. It had caused the downfall of many small hedges previously! They had felt that they were ready to practice on more sturdier prey and had chosen a young sapling as their worthy opponent. They were ready and prepared - the sword apparently was not.
The poor sword was broken just above the halfway point of the blade and the tip hung sadly by a small strip of fibers that refused to let go. Still in a bit of confused shock, Nax lifted and lowered the sword a few times, the loose tip bobbed up and down with the motion. Nax's tail flicked back and forth in irritation. That's not how swords were supposed to work! They growled deep in their throat and they bared their teeth, frustrated. Nax looked up into the sky, shading their eyes and gauging the position of the sun. It was still pretty early morning as far as they could surmise - still early enough to make a visit into the town. Nax did not enjoy visiting the town during the mid-day working hours. Too many humanfolk roamed around the streets and that made Nax nervous. They still weren't used to many people in one place. But early morning and late evening were perfect times for looting and pillaging!
Decision made, Nax quickly strapped the sword to their belt and scurried over to their cave-home. They grabbed their trusty pirate coat and shouldered it on, grabbed a handful of small knick-knacks from the jar behind the cot, positioned their hat just right on their head, then made a beeline for the village.
Just as Nax had hoped, there weren't too many humanfolk bustling around the village yet - most of them would either be out in the fields, gathering herbs from the forest, or doing housework and the like, according to Nax's earlier studies of the village. It was a perfect time to ambush the blacksmith! After all - according to the picture books, if there was a problem with your sword, you visited the local blacksmith! Nax used their ultra-sneaky stealthy step to slink around the buildings until they found the blacksmiths shop. They ran up to the shop to do a cool door slam entrance--
And smacked snout-first into the door. Closed? But why? The Blacksmith never kept the door closed during working hours. What a disgrace! Nax clawed at the door, trying to reach the door handle above their head and shouted out in a shrill, commanding voice, "Blacksmith! I demand you open this door at once! I require your services!"

Renard was getting adjusted to his visit in Moonveil, after leaving Captiol Landing a week ago for his pilgrimage of learning blacksmithing. He arrived to the small village to learn the basics from the smithy in the village who was his elder by, was it two or three centuries? It was one of the things he wasn't adjusted to learning from races who could age much longer than himself. The deal from the elven smith was that if he could help out with menial task's around the forge, he could stay in an inn that the teacher would cover for, however, he could only learn if he paid. The elf was willing to let him run the store while he worked on more inventory for a wage, and such, Moonveil became a new home, for the time being.
Today was meant to be a day when the shop was closed, the smith had to visit an business partner outside of the village and for that, the store was closed for a few days. He wasn't prepared when he heard a loud voice demanding the door to be opened. He stood still for a moment, his boss never told him about what to do in a situation like this. Thoughts raced through his head, but he considered that since the door wasn't being forced down, it wasn't a robbery. He walked up to a window to view outside and when he saw, what he assumed to be a child demanding the door to be opened, he walked up to the front door to answer and unlocked it to slightly open it so he can see out of it.
"I'm sorry but, Myrdin isn't here for today, and two days more.", He looked down at the floor for a moment before following up, "If it's a pressing matter, then I might be able to help, I'm not trained, yet, but I'll do my best."

Nax felt more than saw the door start to open and they prepared to walk in -- until the door stopped moving. They heard a quiet nervous voice mumbling words in their direction. But Nax was not listening - Nax needed in! They lifted a booted foot and firmly kicked the door as hard as they could. This was maybe more epic than what they had done before! Kicking in doors was cool! Nax weasled their way through the gap, keeping one hand on their hat so it wouldn't fall off.
In front of them was a human they didn't recognize. A lanky individual with unusually green hair and lots of brown dots on his otherwise pale skin. Not the built muscley human men in Nax's picture books. Maybe this human was underdeveloped? But one thing was for sure, this human wasn't the one they expected to see! Nax pointed an accusatory finger at the man, eyebrows furrowed as they exclaimed loudly, "You're not the blacksmith! ... You're a trespasser!"

The child managed to slink through the door he was holding despite his effort to keep the door closed just enough. When he turned around and was accused of a crime that didn't commit by this pirate. Now that he had a good look at him, he was a kobold, to which he assumed was a child in kobold terms. He took a short inhale in before composing himself. "I'm not the one trespassing but you. As I said before Myrdin isn't here, but I'm hired to look over his shop in his absence."
He made sure to speak louder than before and with a bit more strength in it this time, "Considering you managed to barge in, I take it you have a rather important reason being here no?"

Nax faced the tall lanky man and judged him with squinty eyes. He didn't seem much different from a tall young tree sapling. Small compared to other trees around them. Still springy, still bendy. Still needing so much growth. And much weaker than other trees around them.
Still, a sapling broke their sword..... Maybe saplings were still strong in their own way. Nax surmised they could get what they wanted, but maybe a healthy dose of caution would he good.
Nax pointed their sword at the man, the end of it still dangling stubbornly, almost comically, from the rest of the wooden blade. "You are not the blacksmith! The blacksmith is always here! But the great Pirate Captain Nax will forgive you of this if you will do the blacksmith's job and fix my sword!" Nax puffed out their chest as they introduced themselves, to seem more intimidating - despite the obvious height difference.

Renard didn't try to argue with the "Captain", Myrdin said himself he only leaves for an important reason whenever it comes, perhaps the recent word around the region reached him too. Despite the attempted intimidation, a patron of Mydrin's forge is still a patron. "Well, normally blacksmiths don't work with wood unless its an hilt. I can't say that Myrdin can help with this..."
He lifted up his right hand, and after noticing the sword in detail, he simply moved the loose part of the blade and held it in place to the rest of the blade before a soft glow came from his hand, and after removing it, the blade was melded back into place.
"I'm not a blacksmith, but I know my way around mending something broken."

Nax did not understand these words "blacksmiths don't work with wood". Didn't blacksmiths work on swords? Why would a sword that is wood be different from other swords? A sword was a sword no matter the material, right? And blacksmiths made swords! Nax doubted the skill of this new man. That is, until they saw the man's skill in front of them.
The man put his hand on Nax's sword and moved the dangling bit back into place. A glow came from his hand, soft and warm. Nax was shocked, not expecting this. Then they were transfixed. Nax's eyes dilated in undisguised curiosity at the glow from the man's hand. Where did it come from? What was it for? What was it doing. Nax's tail swished back and forth in interest as they watched. All too quickly, the light faded and the man removed his hand from Nax's sword - now back to one cohesive whole.
Nax stared at the mended sword in awe, their brain completely blank from the marvel of magic in front of them. Nax felt a small shiver of pleasure run down their spine, causing their scaled horn ridges to flex in response - a sort of rippling motion starting from the crown of their head and traveling down their spine to their tail. The tail in turn swished delightedly. After a minute, Nax looked back up at the man and thrust their sword back up at them, though not in a confrontational way. Their eyes still held a sense of baffled wonder. "Do it again!"

It was clear the Captain wasn't introduced to magic before, not to mention in a village like this? He didn't think much of it, but then the captain was asking for a encore. "Well, it's meant to help repair things that need it but..." He looked at the worn sleeve on his left arm, he must have forgotten to tidy it up lately. He took the Captain's blade and gave it a good look over, there were minor cuts and dents, but the magic worked for everything small.
He simply used his index finger to channel the spell, and as it started to glow he began to trace over the imperfections with it. It took a minute or two, but the sword was as close to pristine it could get. He handed it back to the Captain. "Looks like it's back to new. Captain Nex." He treated the honorific with the regard as his teacher, "I don't think I introduced myself. Renard Marten, Blacksmith in training, but an practitioner of Light magic."

Nax watched in fascination as the man took their sword and concentrated. The glow came back, albeit just in his finger, and went over the wooden sword with a practiced hand. Nax's eyes dilated again, their tail waved languidly, and a small purr of pleasure rumbled in their throat as they watched every small chip, ding, and scratch magically disappear. The sword was as good as new - better than new even! Nax was delighted as they took the sword again from the man - Renard.
Nax inspected the sword, more in interest than scrutiny. A small lopsided grin pinched their lips, showing off a few of their sharp white fangs. They looked back up at Renard, gears seeming to click in their mind. They pointed another accusatory finger at Renard, though more in acknowledgement than scrutiny. "You're a sorcerer!" Nax's visage had relaxed into something akin to a child discovering some new intriguing activity.

He saw the Captain lit up as he did his work and when he gave the sword back to him, he couldn't help but feel happy too. Though to answer his question, "In a way yes, I only know a single branch of magic as of late. I seek to learn all and learn blacksmithing as well. Combine the two and become a blacksmith worthy of respect! Though, I need to learn to walk before running, that's why I'm a tutor under Myrdin for that."
He still remembered the day his mother taught him the Mend Object. "Safe to say, that "sorcery" wasn't taught by him, and I wouldn't know who in this village could help you."

Nax listened absently to Renard as they gave a few practice swings with the newly fixed sword. There was no trick to the magic - the sword still swung like it used to! They continued to swing it around, doing a few jabs, slashes and downward strokes.
"Nax doesn't know any magic! Magic is only for sorcerers, and Nax isn't a sorcerer. Nax is a pirate!" They stopped for a moment, looking back up at Renard. "Do blacksmiths know magic too? None of the pictures showed blacksmiths having magic... Is this a prerequisite to become a blacksmith?" They sounded genuinely confused and curious, waiting to hear Renard's response.

"No, no, it's not at all needed to know magic to be a blacksmith, though knowing it certainly helps out for minor problems." he wondered if there was any stories about pirates within Moonveil but he couldn't remember, Mrydin didn't even mention anything about a kobold, but word was often about it from other villagers. "I would expect a pirate to be more out in the ocean, what made you want to be like them?"

Nax gave a little growl at Renard's comment. "Nax will sail the ocean! Nax will be the best pirate captain in all of Charon!" There was a brief pause as they continued to swing their sword. "...I'm just practicing in this area first. You know - don't want to look like a fool that doesn't know anything when I'm actually out pillaging on the high seas!"
Nax stopped swinging and looked over at Renard, their tail flicking slowly back and forth as they thought. "Pirates are fearsome! Pirates are brave! At least, that's what all of the picture books said. Kobolds..." They paused, looking back at their hands with an introspective stare. "...are not fearsome. And are not brave. Pirates get to sail to new lands and go on adventures - face worthy foes and make exciting tales! Kobolds stay in caves, and keep to themselves. Kobolds are not protagonists in storybooks." They were silent, contemplating their own words and their meanings.

Renard had to think for a moment to respond to that, the only relation to something like that is a class difference, not race. Still, he tried to help out Nax in a way he could. "Sometimes, you don't have to be what you read in the books, most of the time, they're about people who were, not will be." He knelt down, coming to head level with Nax. "Nobody can write who a person is, only the person themself is in the charge of their own story. You're already on the path to becoming a pirate already! All you need is to follow the dream you want to achieve, and soon enough, I think they'd be telling stories about the mighty Captain Nax!"

Nax looked at Renard, listening to what he said. There was a brief pause as the words sank in. Then Nax gave a mischievous lop-sided grin. "Yes, Nax knows this! I will forge my own destiny." Nax thrust their sword in the air with vigor, the grin widening into a confident smile and eyes to the sky. "And I will be what other kobolds have not been -- Someday, I will be the best pirate captain in all of Charon! I will be fearsome and I will be known!"
They turned their eyes back to Renard. "And Renard will become the best known blacksmith with sorceries! Fixing swords and casting spells!"
