The sun beat down on her as she waded through fine sand to the meeting point. Mori walked diligently behind her, absentmindedly carrying the parasol about three feet from being helpful. Sweat dripped down gwendolyns face and mingled with the perfumed veil as she parsed through ways to remind the maid to keep her shaded, despite having done so several times along the journey already. The womans absentmindedness was becoming an issue to be sure. Not only that, but she seemed oblivious to the desert heat, despite being a half-tabaxi. Up ahead, shimmering in the middle distance, a small white tent began to make itself apparent. Above it waved a flag, A bold W.E.F. with a pair of wings behind it proved that it wasn’t a mirage. Finally! Gwendolyns pace quickened as Mori gave a surprised gasp and picked up her skirt to keep up. Sand kicked up behind her feet as the woman in burning armour almost began dashing towards the promise of shade. Quest Name: Prey or Predator

As Gwen and the half-catfolk approach the W.E.F. tent, it is not the only thing out of place in the expanse of sand. Lying down in the sand a few lengths from the tent is an adult storm drake, its silver scales shimmering in the sunlight as it basks under the blazing rays. The large creature opens one lazy eye and looks over at Gwen and the maid, a low rattling rumble rises in its throat in warning.
Poking their head out of the tent is a familiar face, the young dark elf that Gwen had met at the soiree in Bleak Fort, though she is not dressed nearly as fancily. Instead she wears light leather armor and loose fitting clothing in pale colors well suited to the intense desert heat. Her black and white streaked hair is tucked up into a hood helping to keep the sun off her violet skin.
"Easy, Indra," she says to the drake before squinting at Gwen. "Oh, Lady Gwendolyn. The fuck you doing out here?"
Zarius, who is inside the tent speaking to the W.E.F. representative, peers through the flap of the tent and smiles brightly at the noble woman as she dashes through the sand, her poor attendant trailing after her desperately.
This was certain to be a more interesting day now.

She panted as she reached the tent, taking a bit of a wide detour to try and avoid the silver drakes snipping range. Nodding only briefly at Shael with a quick and dry sounding “Shade” As she passed by. Throwing open the tent flap and entering Gwendolyn let out a long sigh, before collapsing in a small pile of cloth stacked in the corner. Mori pranced right by the drake as she entered, giving Shael a cheery smile as she rushed to her masters side, reopening the parasol and holding it above the sweating pile of Gwen. A moment after she caught her breath, and collected herself, she addressed the room. “Zarius, Shael, greetings.” She said between deep breaths. “Sir, pleasure to make your acquaintance. Gwendolyn, Lady Gwendolyn. This is my servant Mori.” Mori lifted a paw from the parasol she held to give a cheery wave to all in the tent. Gwendolyn watched her through the side of her eye and noticed the parasol indoors, and only shook her head. Not only that, but she was supposed to bow, not wave. Poor standards of training only reflected poorly on her, especially in front of this representative of one of the oldest guilds in Charon. “Lamellar.” He said, speaking through a thick white moustache. “Or loose chain. Plates no good out here. Too hot, you’ll die before fighting anything.” His big bushy eyebrows tilted to show his disappointment. He was old, very old, and his skin was wrinkly and tan. “Put on those robes you’re sitting on instead.” “Seriously?” She said with incredulity. Met with naught but silence as the man went back to his discussion with Zarius, she sighed and stood. Reaching out to Moris arm, she pulled the parasol downwards to block everyone’s view before unstrapping the Cuirass and quickly donning the white robe, now adorned with a sweaty imprint of her back. “There, happy? Zarius, It’s a surprise to see you out here. I don’t suppose the Consortium sent you like they did me?”

"Ah, I am not associated with the Consortium," Zarius corrects. "I am a member of the Fighter's Guild though."
The elderly man scoffs which draws the fellblood's attention.
"Is something the matter, elder?"
Shifting his weight, not uncomfortable by the question but more just some of the bunching fabric pinching funny beneath his wrinkly ass, the old man sucks on the end of his lit pipe and blows out a breath of sweet smelling smoke.
"Sharing our resources and knowledge with a bunch of children with more brawn than brains does not seem like the best course of action for the Winged Expeditionary Force. But I do not make such decisions these days, so I will relent."
Zarius frowns a bit. Being part of the Fighter's Guild as of late has really started to have more drawbacks than benefits. He was half considering leaving the guild due to its poor reputation. His brother, however, would never let him live it down if he did seeing as Shaa was Karize's first and best friend. The acting leader of the guild needed all the support and legitimacy he could get, and if Zarius could help provide that, then he supposes he owes it to the minotaur to weather this storm.
"I can assure you that the Fighter's Guild takes itself quite seriously, and though we may not play the part of an army following orders without question, we are quite capable and have good intentions."
The old man snorts a laugh of skepticism. "Believe whatever you will, actions speak louder than words. Just know the force does not need anymore loose canons."
"Like your current leader?"
He narrows his eyes sharply at the fellblood. "That is neither here nor there. You want into the guild, your initiation starts here. All these tremors across Charon have disturbed subterranean creatures of all shapes and sizes, driving them to the surface. Out here we have been getting reports of something beneath the sands ambushing caravans and travelers as they pass over them. It is near undetectable until it's too late. Track this creature and take it down. Do this and your request to join the force will be considered."
"And are you going to just sit pretty here?" Zarius asks, his patience with the man slowly starting to wane.
"No. I will accompany you to assess your skills." He glances towards Gwen now that she has dressed more appropriately. "Or lack there of."
Shael leans over to Gwen and whispers not so subtly. "What a wrinkly old fart."

Gwendolyn actually wasn’t that up to date for the goings on of the Winged Expeditionary Force. The Consortium representative that had tagged her for this mission seemed far more interested in rare creature components than any sort of revival of glory days for old farts. She made a mental note, and chuckled a little too loudly at Shaels comment. This gets them both a stern look from the man after he had just finished denigrating their supposed skills. “Heh, oh my apologies” She said, waving at her nose “Just choking on the fumes of dried plants” He takes a long drag off his pipe and blows the smoke back through his nose in frustration. “Let’s go, now that were all here, we’re burning daylight. Since this is an evaluation as well as a hunt, It is up to you to take the lead on this expedition. Remember, lives are at stake, and failure here means death for the next caravan to pass by our sun dried corpses.” Gwendolyn huffed a bit, hoping for a bit longer of a rest. This was indeed a rude old fart, he hadn’t even offered his name when she had. Small nuiscances she thought, mentally reminding herself not to get all wound up again. “Mori, let’s get going.” The cat maid popped to attention, rushing towards the tent flap to hold it open for her mistress. The blaze of the sun almost took the breath out of her after having spent only a few minutes in relief. Actually, in all honesty, it wasn’t as bad as before. The robes were surprisingly light and airy, thin enough to let in a small breeze that passed by. She took a few steps to the side, once more trying to avoid snipping range of the drake that lounged outside. Around them was sand, and the occasional obelisk from ruins long forgotten. In her mind, not the slightest clue as for how to start tracking.

Zarius also gives the two women a bit of a look, less stern and more pleading to not make this more of a pain than it already was. He follows after Gwen and her servant as they step back out into the exposed barren wasteland, the Sand Sea Pyramids were just distant shadows looming over the dunes.
The fellblood turns to his young elven companion. "What do you make of things, Shael?"
She was just tucking a few errant strands of her two-toned hair back into her hood when he asks the question. Thinking for a moment, she glances about the group as she responds. "Sounds like an ambush predator, which means it would position itself fairly close to anything someone crossing the desert would be headed towards."
Zarius nods approvingly. "Agreed, and it hides under the sands, so it will not likely be in the ruins."
He pulls out a map and lays it down on the sand at their feet, holding it still so it is not lost in the wind. The map is dotted with lines crisscrossing the desert between the Sand Sea Pyramids, the Oasis, and the City of Zeinav.
Shael leans over to look at the immediate area they're in while Zarius keeps an eye on her. This was also yet another test of the young drake rider's skills. As a previous member of the Ash Land Dvoryanin, she had grown up in these arid lands and spent lots of time racing across the dunes. Survival out here was not something that came easy, and those who grew up in the harsh conditions tend to have good insight on how things in the desert behave.
"Here." She points at a place where several routes all convene. "This is where lots of the paths join so the frequency of prey passing by would be more regular. If I was a big hungry worm or snake or whatever this is, that's where I'd sit."
"Worth a shot. That is not too far from where we currently are. Given out dear outrider here is also supposed to be tracking this creature, it stands to reason their quarry would not be far." He glances over his shoulder at the old man with a smirk. The dark elf wasn't the only one he was keeping an eye on and the old man had definitely tilted his hand a few times throughout the course of their earlier discussion.
The old man scrunches his face, displeased but not willing to criticize. Gathering information was an important skill to have for guild members, even if the methods are less than sportsmanlike.
Zarius rolls the map back up and tucks it away in his bag. "Well, let us be off then. Keep a keen eye and ear out for anything shifting under the sand."
Shael quickly hops up onto her storm drake's back and the creature rises to its feet, shaking off the sand that has gathered between its scales.
The old man opens his satchel and gives a whistle. His camp magically collapses and all the material is sucked up into the satchel for easy transport.
"So when we get into the guild do we get one of those?" Shael asks.
The gruff old man huffs and just starts tromping through the sands.

It was times like these that she missed her reindeer Albus. He had flown off in the midst of the races nearby after being dosed with Bull Strength, never to be seen again. Somewhere out in these dunes was a roided out reindeer, but that was someone else's problem now. “Mori, please, a little closer with the Parasol” She groaned, as Mori had gone back to holding the parasol just far enough away that nothing was actually covering her already burned skin. She reminisced quietly about the few minutes spent in the shade of the tent before being forced back out once more. The price of showing up late she supposed. After an hour or so, smooth tracks began to be made apparent in the sand. “Caravans?” She asked, only to be met with the squinted eyes of the Outrider. He was a tough nut to crack, that was certain. But she wasn’t a noble if she didn’t know how to bleed information from a stone. This old Coot was no different than the dwarves back home. Obstinate, until you let them talk about something they liked. She nudged Shael with a small elbow while the man wasn’t looking, and gave a quiet “Watch this” Gwendolyn turns around subtly, and holds a hand to her chin. “So, you’ve been part of the Expeditionary Forces for a long time right? What did you do the last time you encountered one of these things? (1)” His eyes shifted slightly, as if to recall his encounters. “The last Vorrapede eh… I reckon about fifteen years ago, there was one threatening these here trade routes just the same. We got our men together, made a bit of a decoy with an old cart and a thumper, drew the beast out like wolves to a rabbit. Bastard got away before we could finish it though.”1 Thank you for your Candor

Shael glances at Gwen and Mori as they trudge through the sand. She taps her knuckles against the scales of the drake and the drake responds with unfurl its wings to give some much needed shade to the groups as they walk. The drake isn't thrilled with the command, but obeys nonetheless.
Zarius meanwhile listens in on the conversation between Gwen and the outrider. He would give the woman this, she had an uncanny way of getting people to talk even if they would rather not. The idea of using a decoy wasn't a bad one, the fellblood was already thinking along those lines. The question was who would play the part of bait?
Shael and Indra had the most mobility at their disposal, especially in this terrain. That said, he wasn't too keen on risking losing either the elven teen or the storm drake.
The outrider wouldn't likely be willing to trundle on by himself while they stayed safely back, and Gwen's attendant didn't strike him as someone with any useful skills or monster hunting experience. Zarius wishes Snow had accompanied him on this venture, but the catfolk archer was off in Dragon's Cradle keeping an eye on the political situation there for him.
He still hasn't really seen what Gwen was capable of out in the field aside from their brief encounter on the beach in the Crescent Isles. Judging by her equipment, she was likely more of a defensive support rather than a skirmisher.
That only really left one good option in his mind, as much as he wasn't keen on taking on the task of playing bait for a giant insect.
"We do not have a cart at our disposal. I can move around unseen and unheard fairly easily which could work to our advantage. We need to make sure we find this thing before it finds us."
He looks back at Shael. "Once we get to the crossroads, I want you up in the air to watch for any movement."
Shael rolls her eyes. "Duh. No way am I staying on foot."
He ignores her attitude and looks at Gwen and Mori. "If you both go with Shael you can stay at a safe distance and get in close when it's advantageous."

Gwen perked up a bit after the decision was made. “Oooo fun! Looks like we get that joyride after all, huh Shael!” It wouldn’t be the first time she flew over the sands out here, not even the first associated with something Dvory either. Unfortunately that last time was also partially the reason why she was walking instead of blissfully riding along in a sleigh…
So, Zarius was volunteering to be the decoy. Brilliant, she was certain that any of her other adventuring partners would have volunteered herself for the position, so this was a nice change of pace. Though she was a little hesitant at the prospect of the lithe tiefling being able to outmaneuver a massive worm thing on foot. Their playful skirmish on the beach didn’t exactly put their full prowess on display, but she was sure he could handle his own if he wanted to.
Mori tilted her head a bit at the prospect of riding the drake, but maintained her absent, lackadaisical smile nonetheless. The shade from the drake was nice, and her master seemed quite relieved once it put it’s wings up. She sheathed the parasol, and skipped a bit faster to keep up with the moving pack.
The crossroads was pretty nondescript in the desert wasteland. Naught but a single lopsided and half-buried obelisk denoted anything of importance. Gwendolyn offered one wave to Zarius as she mounted the Drake before takeoff.
“You sure about this?”
The outrider waltzed over to the Obelisk, and pulled out a small mat to sit on from his pack. He plopped himself down in the shade, and began to write in his tiny little weathered notebook.
Mori offered a quiet "Oooohh" as they lifted off, Zarius and the Outrider shrinking in size as they climbed into the sky. The sun reflected off the sands surrounding them as they circled the crossroads. Tracks could be made out now from above, several intersecting caravan trails all meeting up around here and then dispersing towards the horizon in every direction. Every once in a while though, the trails would be interrupted by a patch of smooth sand, like someone had dragged an eraser across the canvas of the desert. Odd.

Zarius gives the outrider an unimpressed look as he made himself comfortable over by the obelisk, probably the only safe place to stand out amongst the dunes. He then looks at Gwen.
"I trust you to have my back," he simply states before tossing a round object to Shael as she climbs up on her drake. "You won't be able to see me, so relay anything you see from the sky using that."
Shael tucks the item away. "Yeah, yeah, I got it."
He shakes his head and steps back from the drake before turning invisible.[1] He moves quietly and quickly across the sand while Shael gets settled in the saddle and makes sure Gwen and Mori are holding on tight.[2]
She runs her nails across the drake's neck scales and the drake almost purrs in response. The drake then takes two bounds forward before leaping into the air and spiraling into the sky. Once they get to a decent height, Shael tugs at her scarf and pulls it over her nose to cover up even more of her face and protect it from the sun.
From the sky they could easily see across the dunes for miles upon miles. And they see a shit ton of nothing. No movement, no shadows, no specks. It's barren for as far as the eye can see.
Zarius meanwhile, scouts across the dunes, pausing at regular intervals to listen for any movement or feel any irregularities in the ground. It was tricky, as the sand shifts and moves under foot and who knows how deep this creature was below the surface.
As Shael's drake does lazy circles in the sky for the next half hour, Gwen would eventually catch sight of something snaking its way through a dune, heading carefully towards the obelisk.

Mori shakes Gwens shoulders and points off into the distance. A quick snap of a Seeing Salt vial saw her vision improve markedly, enough to spot what Mori was gesturing towards. It was like a dune, except forming far too fast for it to be made by the wind. It seemed to be almost… coming towards the Obelisk? “Shael, move us over there, to the right. Mori spotted something, it might be our target.” She said loudly, trying to be heard over the wind. It was definitely something big, moving an enormous amount of sand to make it’s way closer to the bait. A brief dip between two dunes saw the fleeting form of the massive creature. Only a carapace, but it was enough. Shael was already using the object to communicate back with Zarius. “Keep us above it, Once it breaks the surface I’ll drop down. Mori, you stay up here and cover us, you can handle that right?” Gwen asked, semi-seriously. The Catmaid gave a thumbs up, with her trademark absent smile offered in response. I guess that was better than a thumbs down she thought. If only Millicent were here… at the very least she could trust her give a half-assed “Sure” or something. Above her head, two weapons exploded into existence with a cloud of mist being quickly blown away. A large steel maul with a smoking trail billowing out from the head, and a massive collection of gilded steel rods all wound together around a central solid shaft. Activating them, the maul began to fume furiously, and gave off an angry red glow. The Arkanon’s outer rods began to glow a soft blue, rotating slowly in the air around the Drake. Aimed out in front of them, three blue shots rang off and dissapeared into the distance. “Just warming up…”Arkanon Aurelia Phase 1: 3 Shots

"You got it," Shael responds and taps her heel on Indra's side to guide the drake to hover over the creature hiding beneath the sand. She pulls out the little bauble and speaks into it. "We got eyes on the big creepy crawly over here. Don't get eaten."[1]
Zarius glances up at the sky and follows where the drake is headed and responds into the bauble. "On my way." He makes his way across the sands, careful not to disturb the dunes as much as he can, though his caution can only do so much as the grains shift under his weight.
Shael looks surprised by the sudden appearance of Gwen's weapon and watches as the blue shots streak across the sky. "...the fuck were you aiming at??? The giant ass bug below us isn't a big enough target for you?"
Meanwhile, on the ground Zarius sees the shots but doesn't let it distract him from where his feet fall. He then stops as he sees the dune shift and a cascade of loose sand slides down towards him. Jumping back quickly, he barely manages to avoid the massive vorrapede as it lunges forward out of the sand after its unseen prey.
Knowing the creature was still able to detect him despite his invisibility, Zarius drops the illusion and sprints across the sand as fast as he can to lead it around in a circle and keep it from having a straight shot at him.[2]
The creature twists and keeps hot on his heels, but for the time being it is exposed and unaware of the threat circling overhead.

She gave Shael a wide grin, shouting back above the wind. “Just warming up. Keep an eye on Mori! Make sure she doesn’t fall off or something” Gwen says, looking down to ensure that theyre over the target. Closing her eyes in prayer, a subtle blue glow surrounds her, pulsating with her heartbeat. (1) With that, all preparation was done. Gwendolyn slid off the side of the drake and began falling through the sky. Wind whipped the hair out of her ponytail and sent it sprawling wildly behind her as the veil around her face also flailed in distress. She opened her eyes, getting her bearings for a moment and finding the worm below. Shit the ground was approaching fast, no time to think. She summoned her maul, grasping it in a right hand, and began to spin mid-air for maximum momentum. Holding her left hand out, she activated the gauntlets air blast to add even MORE spin to the move.(2) Honestly, closing her eyes at this point because the dizziness was certainly getting to her. The Arkanon fell with her, spinning itself as it blasted six more shots directly into the Spindolyn, sending the blue glow surrounding her into fits of energetic spasms. (3) Eyes opened. Time to strike. The momentum of the Censer Maul Enlightened Redolence carried directly down towards the undulating armoured carapace racing through the desert. (4) A loud CRACK could be heard as the impact shattered the outer armour of the worm, leaving an impact crater like stone against glass. Gwendolyn bounced once, the impact absorbed by Alvina’s Blessing, and grabbed hold of a crack to stay for dear life as the worm reared it’s ugly head. 1 Divinities Blessing 2 Gauntlets of the Howling Gale 3 Arkanon Aurelia phase 2 (6 shots) 4 Momentous Cleave Divinities Blessing Charge: Massive Fall, Arkanon x6

Shael glances back at Mori then back at Gwen. "No promises."
As Gwen lands a devastating blow on the back of the vorrapede's carapace, the creature reels up and lets out a horrendous screech that pierces the air.
Zarius skids to a stop in the sand and turns back to face the creature. Its underbelly is exposed, but that wouldn't likely last. He sprints back towards it as its many legs scratch at the air.
The creature sways and thrashes in pain, trying to throw Gwen from its back. While it's distracted, Zarius closes the gap quickly and slams his fist into the softer underbelly, his knuckle knives ripping a gash through the exoskeleton. Comparatively, the damage he deals is nowhere near as extensive as what Gwen managed with her aerial attack, but damage wasn't really what he was going for. The blow knocks the creature back a bit and it twists in the air off balance for a moment.[1]
Seeing an opening, Shael has Indra swoop down and the drake's throat glows with blue light before a bolt of lightning bursts forth and strikes the thing in the head. A sharp crack of thunder follows as the drake swoops back up out of range of the vorrapede's lashing tentacles.
Not appreciating being attacked on all sides, the vorrapede dives down into the sand to try and gain some cover from the attacks from above.
Zarius sees the shadow of the creature looming above him grow as it dives forward. He ducks to the side but gets smacked with one of the many large articulating legs protruding from the giant insect's sides which knocks him across the surface of one of the dunes. Getting a face full of sand, he rolls up onto his feet and coughs before glancing about for where Gwen ended up.

As the drake dives, Mori stands herself up silently on the back, closing her parasol and aiming it at the worm. An undulating orb of black and orange fire erupted from the tip and exploded on the creatures back. A black scorchmark could be seen as the creature rears from the collective attacks. She plops back down seated backwards as the Drake pulls out of the dive, smiling absently as always. She lets out a soft “Weee!” and kicks her legs in apparent glee. Gwen is barely hanging on as the monster reared it’s ugly head. Her gauntlets slipped and she’s sent flying into the sand. Firebolts and Lightning, very very frightening she thought as she impacted the dune, slightly concussed. Unfortunately, the worm had already dived by the time her protective magics turned less protective, and a large explosion of light goes off around her harmlessly. The healing glow soothes her headache however, and she quickly stands back to begin running over to Zarius who seemed to be looking for her. Unfortunately, the combination of magical explosion and regular footsteps was like a Tracking Tag for the Vorrapede. It tunneled through acres of sand, swirling itself and finding the perfect moment to intercept Gwendolyn in her sprint. Shooting up from the dunes, it’s thousand toothed maw caught her mid stride and unaware. “SHIIIIT, HEEELP” she cried out as the worm took her into the air, crunching down and making deep gashes in Gwens abdomen. The Censer maul wailed itself quite fruitlessly at it’s armoured head, and the unaimed Arkanon only landed one shot of it’s volley on the creatures carapace.
