The Black Dragon Pirates was once a notorious pirate crew in Charon who once sailed the seas. They were once known to be one of the strongest and most powerful crews in Charon even debated to be the strongest by many. The group was led by its powerful captain, Wilford Wyther a cheerful man with ambitions to explore the seas and have fun with his newfound family in his crew.
Wilford Wyther was a poor commoner born in Sol City the product of an affair between a noble and a lady of the night. Growing up, Wilford was told by his mom that his father would one day come back for them and they’d all live together happily in his estate, however, this was an obvious lie and Wilford knew that but his mom never stopped believing in it, always telling Wilford he’d come back. Wilford had to work to support his mother and himself as she grew weaker and sicker by the day (Wilford would later say his mother died of heartbreak). In a desperate bid to save his mother, he snuck into his father’s estate to plead with him to help him save his mother.
His father looked him straight in the eyes and said “Who are you? Even if you are my bastard why do you think I’d ever want to be involved with you or your mother? Leave my property and never return here again”.
His mother passed away soon after and Wilford was left to fend for himself. He spent his formative years as a child and teenager stealing anything he could in order to survive. This continued until he was 16 and he foolishly attempted to steal a traveling pirate’s treasure. He was caught obviously but the Captain of the crew saw the hunger and desire to survive in the kid's eyes and took him in as an apprentice pirate on the crew. This crew was known as the Cockatrice Pirates, a fearsome and infamous crew that rampaged all across the seas. Their goal was to place the entire seas under their control, they were so powerful and dangerous that they almost reached their goal.
However, their rain of terror was stopped by other powerful forces. Wilford managed to escape the crew's destruction and decided to start his own crew in search of a new family since his old one was either dead or laying low. Wilford founded the “Black Dragon Pirates” and they grew in strength and size, having 5 ships total under their pirate fleet. They scoured the seas, looking for treasures, battled against other pirates, and other pirate-y things.
Thirteen years ago, the crew docked at Thorock to get supplies and rest for a few months while they prepared for their next voyage at sea. It was in Thorock while getting drinks and food at the Indigo Inn, where they met Javal Zarrias a fellblood child working at his mom’s tavern and inn. He was a cheerful and playful kid who liked to play with and hear the stories of the pirates. He got to know them pretty well during this time and wanted to join their crew. Javal’s mom Paula told Wilford that she thought it would be a good idea for him to take Javal out to sea, especially since he had earned the ire of nobles and started to show dark impulses. Wilford thought about it and decided he was interested in having Javal as an apprentice pirate but he was too young and if he still wanted to join they’d let him once he’d turned thirteen. Once Javal turned thirteen he officially joined the crew as an apprentice pirate and sailed the seas with the Black Dragon Pirates. Javal was not the last apprentice pirate of the Black Dragons though, after Javal came four others around his age. Raoul Orel an Astralblood Dhampir, Nieven Oakenthorn a snobbish Sun Elf Noble, Sasha an Earth Genasi Half-Orc, and Vonoros a serene Triton. These five apprentice pirates would be trained under Captain Wilford and his commanders themselves, groomed into being the next leaders of the crew. Eventually, they would become strong members of the crew, holding a position only third to the commanders and the captain, as the “Dragon Princes”.
They were called this because each of them had an integral role as the next generation of the crew, each had a characteristic that made them worthy of this. It was even speculated that one of them would take the role of Captain after Wilford retired from a pirate’s life. It was always a debate as to who it would be even among the Dragon Princes themselves, however, most of the crew thought Javal would be the one to inherit the Captain’s position due to being so similar to him. Everything was fine for the next couple of years, battles with their rivals “The White Griffin Pirates”, finding lost treasure, and just generally having fun was their life until one terrible day.
After suddenly docking the crew back at Javal’s home of Thorock, the princes were sat down and told that the crew was going into a serious and dangerous battle against a huge threat and that the princes wouldn’t be joining them in it. All of them begged and pleaded with their captain to let them be there but Wilford wouldn’t change his mind he made them promise to stay under his last order as their captain. They all reluctantly accepted their captain’s decision and stayed in Thorock until they heard any news back from them, they had heard that the same thing happened to their Rivals the White Griffin pirates their rookies, “The Rising Stars”.
A month after this all went down, both the Black Dragon Pirate Crew and White Griffin Pirates fleet ships were found totally and utterly destroyed with not a single sign of any pirates on either side. No dead bodies in the sea or on the wreckages and no life were found. Most people since then have assumed that both crews took each other out in a final duel to the death and wrote off the disappearances as either dead or lying low. However, to the Dragon Princes and Rising Stars, it seems like there is more than that leading to both crew's absolute decimation.
