“Oh, Warren… Darling. Look at this…”
Amelia looked over to her husband, holding a warm bundle, one that made a little noise, a sort of whimper one would expect of a newlyborn. Warren came over, taking the tiny little being in his arms. “Warren… Who does she belong to…?” “I do not know, Darling…”
The tiny thing had almost a full head of hair. It was so unusual, they could almost see tiny sparks floating off its head like it’s starting a fire. Beautiful, black, almost ash-dark hair, and eyes like glowing embers.
“I think… We need to keep her.” “Of course, Amelia… She has nobody else, it seems.”
Amelia and Warren Euanthe, two herbalists in a little oasis town in the middle of the desert, had come across the little being in the sands around their little village. She had seemed abandoned, so like any decent people, they had decided to take this little girl in together. They took her home, cleaned her up, and while musing for a name, had decided on a flower they had seen on the way home; a red azalea.
“Azalea~! Keep out of the observatory, my darling!” Amelia called, moving around her beloved husband, her hands gently keeping him in place with her hands on her hips. “OKAY MOMMY!” Azalea called, a little seven year old shutting the door behind herself as she stepped into the glass room, sunshine pouring in from the sunroof. Her breath caught in her breath for a moment. Gods, it was so beautiful. This was easily her favorite place in the world. Her mother always did warn her to never go in here.
Amelia and Warren were absolutely wonderful parents, and much to the annoyance of little Azalea, she was not their only child. Azalea had several siblings; Three boys and one girl. Kevin, Ralph, Daisy, and Remus. They all grew up very happy, and despite her being the eldest, the children did have to do quite a bit of protecting for both Azalea and themselves.
As every year goes by, and every year Azalea grew, the village around her and her family grew more and more concerned. Though they knew what she was, as a fire elemental in the desert was not all that unusual, one growing up with humans was… almost unheard of. She had already proven she was not a danger, as she did not have any abilities, but people often do not listen. Years and years went by, and eventually, the blooming flame had become a young adult. But the distrust around her had also grown.
“Oh Warren, this is such a mess. How does this happen? Nothing ever happens here!” “Amelia, darling. It’ll be fine…” It wasn’t long until the distrust bit her in the ass. The small village in the Zeinav desert never had anything interesting ever happen in it. No one ever went missing, nobody got hurt on purpose, until someone did.
The detectives came to their door in the morning, and pulled the girl from the observatory. She was sleeping there, having decided to sleep there after coming home late at night, having picked flowers out by the road the night before.
“What were you doing by the road so late at night?” The tall, burly man questioned. “Picking flowers! It's usually too hot in the daytime, so I like to wait until night…” “...You’re a fire elemental, don’t you like the heat? Anyways, we found… burn marks near the caravan…”
“You don’t think I did this, do you?” She scoffs. “I don’t even have abilities!”
The officers informed the Euanthe’s about the situation; A rather important caravan had traveled through the village, and there were remains and debris found on the road outside of the village. They had reason to believe it was Azalea, and so they were taking her in for questioning.
She didn’t see her family for days. It was terrifying for Azalea, really. She couldn’t give anyone the answers they wanted, but nobody really believed her. Eventually, Amelia and Warren got fed up, and they called in an expert, after getting some recommendations from their family in the city.
Izzy Arodre was supposedly someone they could trust, and was one of the best. So, with the money they saved up, the Euanthes paid her for her services. The officers agreed, as long as they could get some answers.
"Really? The kid?" She looks at Lea and then back at the group, grinning,"Oh yeaaah, wild beast this one, for suuure took out the caravan. Uh-huh. I'm shakin' in my boots. --You guys eat some bad bread lately? Got rye poisoning? Do y'all actually have any evidence for that or did the wind blow wrong and a hen crowed like a rooster, so you've got your underthings all bunched up the wrong way. A kid," She snorts derisively, snickering under her breath, and waves at the bars to open. "Let her out and leave the deduction to the professionals, will ya? I'm on the clock, so it's your dime I'm wastin' educating you."
Azalea was released, thankfully. At that point, the investigation was on. Azalea, of course, couldn’t help but feel like Izzy was doing this for her. She was the one who got her out after all. Plus, she couldn’t leave well enough alone. Azalea would follow her around like a puppy, simply begging her to let her help. It would have been annoying to anyone not as patient as Izzy, who would send her out on things that Azalea knew were wild goose chases. Nonetheless she persisted, and actually ended up being fairly useful towards the end. After all, when you leave on a wild goose chase and end up with an actual lead, sometimes people let you try out the real thing!
Izzy and Azalea solved the case together - Turned out to be some rascals in town who were aiming to just get rid of Azalea. Turns out they did exactly what they wanted, because Azalea begged Izzy to take her under her wing.
“I swear I’ll be useful! I'm nice to people and when you’re nice, people tell you things! Plus in the City I won’t be as off-putting to people, it's not like no one has ever seen an elemental before, right? Oh, Please, miss Izzy!” "Mmmmm," The big tiefling hums for a few moments before looking back at the village. This place didn't want the kid. Shame, that. She lifts one shoulder in a shrug and beckons Azalea to follow. "Why not. Sure thing, Sparks. Their loss is my gain."
Azalea is a ray of flowery, blooming, sunshine. She's like a thorn in the side of people she cares about, because sometimes her kindness gets her into way too much trouble, but she really truly does try her best. Despite her wishing the best she often sees the worst of people - She is a very optimistic person who does not let that blind her at all. Lea is very good at telling when people are lying, and even better at getting them to tell the truth, like a little tumor. But all of the optimism is how she survived, after all.
