Well, this certainly reminded Gwendolyn of home. Thick plumes of smoke billowed from the nearby volcanoes, filling the air with the heavy scent of ash and sulphur. The near barren landscape was steep, treacherous, and covered in jagged rocks and boulders launched from eruptions both ancient and recent. Thunder rumbled through the plumes, the sharp arcs of lightning illuminating the clouds in deep reds and oranges. She stepped up atop a rock that gave her a good view of the area, looking back to ensure that Millicent was keeping up well with the luggage.
She found herself in the area at the behest of the Consortium. After returning from a terrible trip to the swamps, they had immediately sent her back out here to the Dragons Cradle for Static Roots. They had said to meet another prospective member out here on the Cape, liability and all that. She wondered what handsome rich noble would be waiting out here for her, fantasizing about being swept off her feet. Millicent's approach shook her out of her daydream, the smell of cigarette smoke wrinkling her nose.
"Put that out will you, we dont want to offend whatever noble is joining the Golden Consortium. A good first impression is a lady's greatest weapon Millicent." The maid with the large backpack took a long draw from her dart, before exhaling and flicking it to the ground. She extinguished it with her heel against a porous rock, before looking up and pointing out to the mid distance.

Astrid may, unbeknownst to her, nearly be a young dignitary, but she's certainly no noble. She quests and adventures for fun and for coin to afford her hobbies: eating and smithing. Her recent endeavors into alchemy may have started mostly on a whim and encouragement from a friend, but she aims to make interesting concoctions and protective potions for her friends and allies.
When she heard another prospective member would be in Dragon's Cradle close to home, she jumped at the opportunity to join them on a hunt for the Static Root. She thought perhaps the Lightning Fields would make for easier pickin's for the root, but she understands some people might not be comfortable with the dangers the Fields present. She's certainly no stranger to the danger. Storms swirl all around Dragon's Cradle, so perhaps they'll find a more interesting sulfuric version of the plant closer to the volcanoes of the north.
Her wings make for easier travel across the rocky terrain. They certainly beat climbing up a mountain and trying to search for her mission partner without being able to see over most rocks, dry trees, and mountain peaks. Aiding her overheard search is her motherly phantom companion, Melodia, who can fly and scours the mountain range for their mystery partner. The specter spots the duo of Gwen and Millicent and flies down toward them. She and Astrid aren't aware the girl will be meeting two people, so she decides to be sure that's who they're here to meet.
The sudden appearance of an elven ghost on an otherwise empty mountain might be surprising for some. Her blue tinged, translucent form manifests before Gwen and Millicent, and she smiles as warmly as a cold undead can.
"Hello there," she says in a gentle tone. "Sorry if I've caused a start. Might you two be the prospective members of the Golden Consortium? My-" Melodia struggles to find the right word to describe Astrid. "-ward and I are searching for you if so. I'll retrieve her if that's the case." The ghostly woman motions up to what looks like an oddly shaped bird flying high over the mountains.

Gwendolyn turned to see what had appeared at the corner of her eye, only to be met with an ethereal form before her, a disconcerting smile on it's face. Most concern for it's sudden appearance dissipated with mention of the Golden Consortium, and the fact that it hadn't outright attacked the pair in the first place. Only slight dissapointment crossed her mind with the mention of the words "ward", and "her". The "her" she could work with, as long as their social status were around her own, but the "ward" implied that they would be too young to sweep her off her feet here on this volcanic coastline after all. Though the flying blob hundreds of feet above her certainly did catch her attention.
"You would be correct, I am with the Consortium. Unfortunately, I seem to have left my ability to fly at home, as such we eagerly await the arrival of your Ward, spirit." The apparition bowed, whisking away in the fashion that only ghosts were capable of. This ward certainly must be significantly prestigious, to both be considered by the Consortium, and to have a better servant than even her. Millicent was great and all, but she certainly had habit's that grated Gwendolyn. She was almost certain that her father had placed them together just to spite her, knowing that Gwen could do little to actually discipline the maid.
Nonetheless, She lifted her veil a smidge to place another dab of parfume to her slender neck. First impressions are the most important after all, and who knows, maybe this partnership could be fruitful after all.

Trying to keep up with this woman's expectations, Melodia offers a slight bow in return, but before she goes, she smiles. "Oh, I assure you, such formalities won't be necessary. We'll return shortly." Then she whisks off into the sky. Something about the woman on the mountain seems familiar, but Melodia surely hasn't seen her before. Perhaps a description?
The specter meets back up with Astrid in the air.
"Oh, ya found 'em?" the girl asks, hovering in place with even flaps of her wings. Melodia quickly explains then leads her down to the mountain peak where Gwen and Millicent await them. When they get closer, Astrid recognizes Gwen, and a devious grin spreads across her face. "I thought I recognized that flamin' maul!" she calls before landing heavily in the snow, her armor rattling. Astrid folds her wings underneath her cape and pops one hip out.
"Good ta see ya again, Miss Gwen!" Astrid says with a grin. "Didn't know I'd be seein' ya again so soon. And searchin' fer plants fer the Consortium? Guess we're two hammer-wieldin' gals with similar tastes." She looks past Gwen at the woman accompanying her and offers a handshake, paying no attention to anything regarding status or otherwise. "Nice ta meet ya. I'm Astrid Stormstone! An' this is Miss Melodia!" she adds, motioning to the specter behind her.
After pleasantries are out of the way, Astrid steps back, hands on her hips, and looks at Gwen again. "So, how'd thin's turn out fer ya after our last encounter? Ya seem alright, if not a bit... miffed?" Astrid's not sure why Gwen seems miffed and decides that it's not because she's upset that Astrid's the one joining her for this mission. They've proven they work together just fine!
"So, Static Root! We're a bit far from storms fer findin' 'em, but there's a few clouds rollin' in just over there. If we can't find one on our own, I could just charge up the cloud a bit and make one happen!" How casually Astrid presents creating a lightning storm might be cause for concern, but she's not one bit hesitant at the idea.

Her heart skipped a beat or two both in dissapointment and surprise as the telltale childish brogue comes from the figure in the sky. "Astrid." The demon child from the docks. Insanely well-armed and armoured for her age, and out here at the edge of the world to pick flowers. The emotions she had to reconstruct to remain composed whilst the kid tucked her wings away was impressive to say the least. Gwendolyn despised being off her guard, and her childish fantasies had certainly emblazoned indescretion in her expectations for this encounter. Her cheeks flushed as she buried it all deeply within, wearing a slightly awkward smile instead of her usual resting bitch face. With a short breath to fully regain composure, she exclaimed with as much cheer as could be mustered. "A pleasure to see you as well, such a surprise that you've decided to join the Consortium." She gave a soft chuckle at the "Hammer-wieldin' gals" comment as Millicent politely shakes the young warrior's hand in return. Gwendolyn too flustered in the moment to really notice the interaction, and Milli too casual in her manner to make a large deal out of it. Her cold stare only alleviated slightly by a well-trained smile as they shook hands. "Millicent, a pleasure" Gwendolyn regards the aloof nature of the child and once more wonders how they had made up back on the docks. She relaxes a bit, trying to seem more natural and "Chill" before responding, and hoping that hey perfumed veil hides the blush she can feel in her cheeks. "Oh...It's nothing. Don't worry about it. Father sent a strongly worded letter once he heard word, and hopefully I wont be placed with that company anymore. Speaking of our last encounter, how is your...hellhound?" Truth be told she was grateful almost. Father would never actually discipline her more than he already did by expelling her from the estate. And wandering a smoky volcanic coastline was leagues more interesting than standing on some smelly dock watching sailors move boxes. Gwendolyn averted her gaze to look at the clouds about the area and the pluming volcano. What did Astrid mean when she said "make one happen" anyway. Did she intend to create a thunderstorm? Was that possible? Her pondering was interrupted by Millicent with a direct tone. "Pardon me, but are you versed in the Sky Domain? I've dabbled, but most of my knowledge comes from old books, where did you learn?""Millicent, don't be rude. We have work to do, shall we?"

Astrid giggles a little at the comment about joining the Consortium. "Aye, it's a bit of a surprise ta me too, if I'm rightly honest," she says. "I s'pose it popped up as somethin' fer me ta do after a bit of trainin' with alchemy and stuff. Figured I'd give it a shot, an' if it don't work out, then at least I tried. If it does work out, it could be a lot of fun!" To some, getting into the Golden Consortium is a great honor. For Astrid, it's something cool she heard about recently and decided to try. She can't say she didn't try something new!
After shaking Millicent's hand, Astrid steps back. "Good ta meet ya, Miss Millicent," she says through a gap-toothed smile before turning her attention back to Gwen. "Well, I'm glad ya didn't get inta too much trouble after alla that. That company kinda sucked anyway." The situation at the docks was messy at best, and considering the two of them teamed up to cause a lot of chaos in the area, she's genuinely glad to hear Gwen got off without too much hassle. Needless to say, Astrid had a good time despite the genuine moments of danger.
"Me hellhound? Oh, Spicy Pawsage's at home," she says, motioning in the general direction of Sky Peak Village. Somewhere south-ish. "Figured it'd be easier ta travel without him this time. Me da's probably feedin' him a buncha sausages. He's a real sucker fer puppy dog eyes."
As she takes a look at the weather around them, her attention turns back to Millicent with her question. "It ain't a problem. I'd say I'm pretty alright at castin' Sky magic," Astrid says, the grin still not leaving her face. This only makes the next words from her mouth seem even more deranged than they already are. "I actually found a connection with the magic after I got struck by lightnin' in the Lightnin' Fields a couple months ago. Me companions thought I died, but really it just stung a bit."
Behind Astrid, a big look of concern crosses Melodia's face. This seems to be news to the specter. "W-Wait... really?"
"Aye!"
Not sure how to process that, Melodia looks to Gwen and Millicent. "I think you'll all be quite alright. Please call upon me if you need me..." And with that, the phantom fades from view.

Looks of both shock and concern became apparent on both of their faces. Millicent because this child had been hit by lightning and not only survived but had become more powerful in the process. Gwendolyn because this child had just randomly decided to apply for a prestigious organization.... and they had let her. A few moments passed, Gwendolyn silently putting up a halfhearted hand to wave away Melodia, as the pair just stared at the girl. She just seemed so detached from the magnitude of her capabilities, too cheerful, it was almost scary. Gwen shook her head slightly, clearing her mind of all the wacky thoughts not associated with the task at hand.
"R- *cough* Right...Glad to hear you're doing well. Lets...Lets get going." She said, awkward smile on her face. Like Astrid had said, the storm was a bit aways from them, and the volcanic plume had shifted with the wind. It was becoming more apparent that either they would be walking all over this mountain range for hours, or they could try astrid's idea of charging up some of the closer nimbus's. "So, you said you could charge a cloud to locate some appropriate roots or something? If that's faster than walking let's give it a try. Millicent know's how to shoot a lightning bolt or something so let her know if she can help, i'm sure she would be thrilled. All this horticulture stuff isn't really my speed, kinda hard to spot things when ya can't see that well" Gwen stated, waving a hand in front of her eyes. The maid walked behind the pair about ten feet, hiding her intense interest in working with the Lightning Rod behind another roll of tobacco.

Astrid's eyes light up at the mention of shooting a lightning bolt. "Really!?" she exclaims, turning to face the maid. "I've learned lotsa spells that help me move around quick, but I ain't quite figured out the lightnin' bolt yet." Her footfalls are confident as she turns to walk backward so she can keep up eye contact with Millicent.
"If I'm bein' honest, I don't know if a lightnin' bolt of our own magic would make the root on its own if ya shot it at the plant. I guess we don't really know exactly how lightnin' makes the root in the first place... I'd love ta try it out though! Would be a bit too easy fer us ta just try an' point at the ground and hit a plant with a bit of lightnin', but then again, I don't s'pose many people can fire off the magic of the gods from their fingertips."
Astrid's hand comes up to drum her fingers against her chin thoughtfully. "As far as maybe... causin' a real lightinin' bolt ta strike... Well, I could fly ya up ta that cloud over there an' maybe we could charge it up with our magic and cause a storm ta happen naturally! Er, unnaturally, but we might get a proper lightnin' strike ta help us find one of these roots!"
Suddenly, it occurs to her that this might sound absolutely bonkers, and Astrid curbs her enthusiasm slightly. "I-I mean if yer interested in tryin' it... I know most folks don't like heights all that much, and it could be kinda dangerous." Not that she minds. Lightning courses through her veins at this point, and she doesn't fear the Lightning Fields below perhaps as much as she should.
Her next words come from a ponderous murmur, "...S'pose I could go try ta attract a lightnin' strike meself... Shouldn't hurt too much, right?" With Gwen and Millicent, there's at least someone around to make sure she wakes up.

This kid was actually insane. Controlling the very weather? It was not in the realm of things that Gwendolyn had ever considered herself capable of being a part of. Swinging a hammer was one thing... But actually? The more that she thought about it... Astrid had channeled electric magic through herself on the docks, And Gwen herself was capable of making superdense clouds like what she assumed thunderstorms were made of... Well, it wasn't like she would be able to find a root or make lightning herself. The Golden Consortium was a pathway to true nobility once more, and if this is what it would take, why not?
"You know, sure. Lets do it. Though, are you sure you can carry me? Catching me off a dock was one thing..." She looked up at the idle, innocent cloud that Astrid had referred to. "But that is quite the bit higher than I'd say I'm used too. I've also never flown..." Why was SHE embarrassed in this situation, It wasn't like the vast majority of Charonians had flown before. Maybe it was just her nerves, Steel yourself woman. Right.
"I guess I can make the cloud dense enough to hold a charge? I dont know much about electricity and stuff... but I think whenever it thunders the clouds are heavy enough for rain right? I can use my fog!""I will stay down here. If you give me a signal, I can make a conductive path from the ground to the cloud...Might help make a bolt more likely to appear." Oddly enough, Superconductive Plasmotic Pathways was something that Millicent had read about in an old journal hidden in the Mystwud estates. A crazy old wizard theorized that when an electric charge passed through air, it lowered the resistance of the air it had passed through enough to allow for stronger, repeated strikes. It was only theory, lunatic theory at that, but it wasn't like the young one would be bothered by whatever tiny volt she could cook up. Besides... She wanted to show off in front of the Lightning Girl.

The more Gwen speaks, the more Astrid realizes that she didn't clearly communicate what she meant in all her babbling. Really, she intended to carry Millicent up to the clouds to fire lightning into one and try to charge it up. But maybe Gwen has some skill with the Sky Arcana! Maybe Millicent is her apprentice! Of course, that makes the most sense!
A variety of minor expressions cross Astrid's face while she puzzle pieces things together, only to snap back to reality when she realizes she never actually answered Gwen.
"Oh, yeah! 'Course I can carry ya!" she says, dismissing her own muddled thoughts away with a nonchalant wave. Then she looks at Gwen. "So... yer gonna make the cloud thicker with me carryin' ya up there, and Miss Millicent will... fire a lightnin' bolt? Yeah! That sounds good! Exactly like we were talkin' about!" It's not. But it's close enough.
"Just don't get struck yerself, Miss Millicent," Astrid says, giving a vigorous, warning nod. "It don't feel all that great!"
Then Astrid rolls her shoulders and opens her wings again. The feathers transition into leathery wings like a bat, and she stretches them before sidling behind Gwen, hooking her arms under Gwen's as best she can, and lifting them both into the air. It takes a moment to get going, but her wings push air down enough to give them decent lift, and finally, they're fully airborne. Astrid heads right for the closest cloud so Gwen can work her (sky?) magic.

It was kind of weird to see the odd leathery wings unfurl from the young warrior, but all concerns were quickly replaced when the ascent began. The ground quickly dissapeared from under them, Gwendolyn had to pop a Seeing Salt to be helpful at all. A crack and a sniff of the vial only amplified the effect of the ground zooming away from under them. Millicent quickly shrank to the size of an ant as they soared up, higher and higher to the point where even with the effects of the Salts her maid could not be seen.
"SHIT SHIT SSSHIIIT WHOOOO THIS IS SO COOL" She shouted out as the wind rushed by her ears, the air itself cooling as they approached the cloudline. Her sightline made contact with the actual horizon for one of only a handful of times in her life. She could see the suns reflection of the water stretching out to the curve of the planet. It was beautiful. And then it was misty. They had entered a cloud nearby, eerily similar already to her incense magic. Immediately most of the clothes that she had been wearing became damp and cold with moisture as the ambient water permeated her being.
"IS THIS IT? IM GONNA GET STARTED" Awkwardly, maneuvering with the arms under her armpits, she brought her maul up and began a small chant. Smoke billowed outwards and made the gray of the cloud even darker with particulates of smoke and incense.

Despite Astrid's strength, Gwen's additional weight puts quite a lot of strain on the girl's wings. Nevertheless, she persists, flying them up, up, and up, far into the sky to reach the lowest hanging cloud. It's as if she ran a marathon directly into the sky. Her wings strain, so she pauses, gliding around and taking in the beautiful horizon of Charon around them. Mountains, volcanos, flashing clouds over the Lightning Fields, a blizzard covering the lands west in Frost Gale. It's not often Astrid just stops and admires the natural beauty of the world.
"Aye, it is, ain't it?"
Feeling reinvigorated, she takes Gwen up into the cloud, and the other mancer starts working her magic, adding density to the cloud until they're both blinded and soaked by the cold, wet air.
"Alright!" Astrid says. "Now let's charge this thin' up so we can find a root! Fire away!"

Fire away? Oh! She means light the fire to let Millicent know to hit it.
"Got it! Firing!" She slides the switch on Enlightened Redolence to turn on the small torchlight in its maulhead. The soft red glow only barely illuminated their surroundings. The energy died down for a moment after the awkward silence in which nothing happened.
"I don't think she can see it... What do we do now?" Gwen asks, the enthusiasm replaced with a bit of confusion as to how this plan was originally supposed to work. She turned her upper torso a bit to look at Astrid, and in the process, the grip on her maul loosened enough to drop it. The light from the head dissipated into the thick cloud of smoke and water, leaving the two in near darkness. Well, almost. The Seeing Salts power still worked so that Gwen could see her maul dropping down into the wasteland of volcanic rock and debris. Shit. Meanwhile, Millicent saw a small light reflect off the bottom of the cloud for but a moment. It had grown darker over a few minutes, she had assumed that was her masters handiwork. They hadnt really discussed a signal at all, and the cloud was pretty far. She shrugged, pulling out her spark lighter to aim at the shimmering glint dropping from the cloud, and fired.
The arc of electricity rushed through the air, striking the dropping lightning rod. It's mark hit, midair, and with nowhere to go, it leapt to the next nearest metallic source, the two women sitting in the cloud.

Astrid waits for something incredible happen. When it doesn't, and Gwen seems confused, the two exchange equally perplexed glances amongst the now red-tinted haze of the cloud.
"Um... Miss Gwen, d... D'ya not have lightnin' magic?" Astrid squeaks, realizing that she and Gwen definitely had a misunderstanding.
Gwen shifts in Astrid's grip to get a better look at the girl, giving her a expression full of disbelief. "Huh? No, i just use smoke and salt. Do I give you the impression of a magician?" her words come out harshly, maybe about as much as she intends them to. In what world does she appear to be a magician? Then again, the child before her doesn't appear to be one either, yet her appearance is certainly deceiving. In her surprise, Enlightened Redolence slips from her grip and plummets to the ground. "Shit!"
"I got it!" Astrid cries, diving through the cloud, able to see the maul's descent from the edge. She shifts her grip and manages to throw one hand out just enough to cast a spell on the falling hammer before catching the slipping Gwen and adjusting her hold. Astrid's magic takes hold of the hammer, and it halts its descent, suspended in place in the air as something that could easily be plucked and taken along again.
Breathing a sigh of relief, Astrid feels the strain in her wings. She's not sure Gwen's weapon would survive a several hundred foot drop. At least their misunderstanding is cleared up, so they can fly down, take a break, then bring Millicent up instead.
Or so she thinks. A flash of blue from the ground catches their attention, and panic swaths across Astrid's face. "Uh, ya don't happen ta have a way ta protect against lightnin', do ya??"
Gwen, recovering from the brief scare of nearly falling, manages to nervously respond. "Heh...he No... No! Thats why I'm up here? Astrid.... That's why I'm up here?! ASTRID!"
"S-Sorry 'bout this!"
A pulse of magic envelopes Gwen, and Astrid's hands release her. Gwen scrambles to grab Astrid, but the world moves in slow motion around her. A blue streak of energy courses through the sky, catching the hammer, and firing straight up into the cloud and toward the girl. The lightning bolt meets the cloud and sends a ripple of electricity through it, charging the air with a loud CRACK!

"WAIT WAIT WAIT NOOOOOOOO-" She screams as Astrid let's her go, scrambling to grab onto her gauntlets, her boots, anything. But it was as if she were in a dream, her movements each significantly slower as she falls away from her. The effect of the salts wear off as Astrid disappears into a cloud of fog and smoke, and Gwendolyn turns around to see the earth as she approaches. The moment she faces it, a pillar of blue white electricity surges past her and enters the miasma above. With sluglike speed, she reaches down to her waistband and withdraws her second Seeing Salts. Bringing it upwards to take the worlds slowest sniff. The effects took place and she quickly realized she had not fallen very far at all, she could still see the cloud about two hundred feet above her, electricity coursing throughout it's entirety. "Aaaassstttrriiiiddd gggeeeetttt oooouuutttt oooofffff tthhhheeeeerrrreeee" She yells fruitlessly at the cloud. It was hard to look around for her at this speed, and Gwendolyn had no idea if she had escaped before the charge. Could she really survive a direct hit of Avashas Wrath? Turning back, she could see her maul coming up, Its entire being wreathed in static. Reaching out to grab onto it only found the remaining charge channeled through her. The pain coursed through her body as her muscles screamed in a slow falling agony. Only moments later did the actual bolt come through however. The now discharged and suspended lightning rod of a maul stood ready to channel the accumulated energy of the nimbus.
A moment in time, experienced over the course of a minute. The bolt erupted instantaneously, coursing through the air to strike the hammer and crash into the ground with explosive force. Gwendolyn's breath was stolen from her as it passed mere metres from her body, the sound of a million glasses shattering at once splitting her ears. Excruciating was the only word for it as she continued her descent in agony.
