Did you find what you were searching for?
The soft light of day was quite pleasant in amongst the hustling and bustling of the prime business district within the city. The salamander simply weaved in and out through the crowd quickly skittering and scuttering to evade being squished by feet stepping down over head. He managed to pull himself through a soft opening in the crowd and make his way slightly up a wall and panted slightly as he caught his breath. Once he finally managed to catch his breath, he noted a city guard coming by and managed to jump onto the man's armor in an attempt to hitch himself a bit of a safer ride through the district. He listened carefully to those speaking and minded himself to keep his mouth shut because he was at least vaguely aware a creature such as himself speaking could be concerning. His last wish was to catch the wrong person off guard and end up a puddle of goop. They finally reached his destination. They managed to make there way up to a bookstore and this was where he took his graceful exit from the town guard in order to make his way into the book store. He needed a map of the nation at this point so that he could make his way about more consciously. He had been to a few regions now, but catching hide and hair of this world was proving to be more challenging than he had anticipated.

Sarris dreaded this more than a cold water bath out in the courtyard of the Grey Citadel. It was a double dread, cold water was not her friend and well modesty. This was a much higher dread. Books with lots of words that she could not read.
Maybe she would find a few magic books written in Elvish. Those she could read and she was thinking that it was part of a curse on her being. The problem booksellers also knew that old Elven books were probably worth a coin or two more than the regular books they had. Like an entire month's wages worth of higher.
Sarris had a way of negotiating the price down to something more reasonable.
Her Grandmother had sent her on a mission to collect some books for the family library. This was Grandmother's way of sending a message that Sarris was being a bit too wild, running with Dragons and playing with Fae, even the Winter Queen. So far her Grandmother had not been told about her magical abilities or her shapechanging.
She watched a salamander head into the bookstore.
This could be interesting.' she thought.
Stepping in the door with Prince, her grey and black cat in her left hand. She reached down with her right palm down and open with the back of her hand against the floor. Speaking in Salamander she addressed the Salamander. "Come! come! We do not want anyone to step on you or have your head crushed by a book," She said as if this was a completely normal thing. For Sarris, this was a normal thing being a Druid. Bookstores were not. She accidentally hip-checked a patron. Well, he made contact while looking at her skirt-covered butt sticking up in the air. There were books knocked off a display and the man ended up on the ground. She hoped that it was not the shopkeeper. "And we do not want you to get pinched by the door," she added.

Do you remember?
His eyes were shifting about peering over the various spines of books. He had picked up reading relatively fine thanks to his ocean voyage and had some sort of idea what the map needed to look like to be directly of Charon. He was going about his merry way, leaving a gently slicked, but quickly drying trail about. Everything was fine and going well until someone approached him directly. He noted the hand was put on the floor, but what caught him by surprise was that he was spoke to in this form's native tongue. It took a grand total of half a second for the panic to set in. He had absolutely no idea what the other had actually said to him. He heard the sounds, felt in his heart that he should understand them, but he absolutely could no for the life of him. He gulped a deep gulp and his eyes dilated slightly in the sheer panic. He was trying very hard to maintain the idea that he was nothing outside of a plain lizard in a world that apparently didn't have many lizards to start with and he hadn't even considered the idea that he forgot the very language he should be able to speak just fine. His breathing picked up and certainly having absolutely no idea what he was being told to only increased his overwhelmed feelings. His ignorance did what flat ignorance often did to him, absolutely embarrassed him. This embarrassed him to the point that he possibly shifted a shade entirely and immediately panicked and ran. He was definitely discovered. Never mind the fact that he was a lizard in a bookstore. Never mind the fact that this person probably had no idea he couldn't understand what was said to start with. Who knew what kind of idea it would create in the individual. He skittered about across the counter top down the leg and then flurried under the counter breathing rather heavily still.

Prince did what all cats do when the Salamander ran. He coiled into a compressed ball, twisted then with all four feet shot out of Sarris’ hand Papers flew as the the cat was chasing the salamander up and over the counter.
In common she yelled at her cat, “Prince stop that!” It was about as useful as yelling at Nathander, Sarne, or even Ray.
She chased the cat around the counter to meet a clerk who gave Sarris a look that made her stop in her tracks. Prince on the other hand was more than happy to dodge her grasp and join the salamander under the counter.

"O-Oh my it does appear in my own discomfort I have caused a bit of trouble..." The salamander took this moment in time to attempt to slip his way out, but it did seem as though the cat weren't going to have it. He let loose a soft sigh that was way more human than salamander and maybe even actually audible over the bit of hustle and bustle at this point. He would await to see the results of this conflict, though the man now about to chastise them may be more curious about why there was sighing coming from underneath more than the trouble that had been caused.
How could he possibly manage to make up for this situation? He had yet again allowed his own ignorance to get in the way of a simple journey for a map. He could speak audibly at this point instead of just quietly cursing to himself, or he could hope that this cat would simply let him go and he wouldn't have to do anything outside of continue just acting like a plain old reptile.
"Uh.. excuse me.." He finally made his way out from under the counter to directly address the shopkeeper. "I'm looking for an updated map of Charon if you happen to have one." At this point, the shopkeeper would blankly stare at the lizard and rub at his eyes trying to make sense of why a lizard was speaking perhaps. "Apparently you don't?" The lizard would blink slightly waiting for the response.

Sarris reached under the counter and caught prince and pulled him back. The cat was not interested in eating the salamander, rather wanted to play. Without much thought, Sarris replied, “You want the cartographer’s shop a block down.” She talked to animals. None ever asked for a map before. “Why would a salamander want with a map? how would you pay for it? And where would you carry it?” Sarris asked. Prince gave her a “What kind of stupid are you?” look.
“Witchcraft,” the shopkeeper said looking the the Salamander that spoke to him.
“He could be someone’s familiar and that would allow the mage to talk through it…” she added before the conversation evolved in smashing send Salamander with something heavy like a heal of a boot.

"Witchcraft? What turned me into a lizard was. I am a victim not an aggressor. Well. At least. I'm not an aggressor here I suppose. Though if we're talking magic I did once upon a time have an intimate understanding. Perhaps even now I have a sense of it, but I just have yet to figure out how the connection works here. It is certainly different, yet it should theoretically be similar or slightly related." Ijin was going on with his analysis of what he had noted of magic in Charon so far. This was something he would need to do at some point without doubt in order to understand how he could grow more from where he was now, but as per usual he had perhaps chosen the worst possible time. The interesting part of this would be the resulting dodges coming from the salamander due to the stomping as he spoke and the complete disregard, he seemed to have for the shop keeper's seeming discomfort.
"Yes indeed. Magic here is quite different. Tell me, is witchcraft not something simply practiced here? Is it against the law or frowned upon? I used to live in a place like that long ago. A fear for progress is insulting you know. What if other people in this shop practiced magic and they were watching you stomp all about like a heathen? Please. Anyway, where was I?" Yet another dodge, stomp, dodge, stomp. "Ahhhh yes magic here is different. Quite different. Tell me do you happen to practice magic? With this he jumped onto Sarris. "What is it with magic here? Is it in you and coming from within you? Do you channel it from something else? Perhaps you can shed some light on my current conundrum. Where I came from, magic had a cost. Do you pay here too?"

Sarris listened and watched as the Salamander danced, dodged, and verbally sparred with the shopkeeper.
When the salamander jumped on her, she went into protective mode.
“A few practice the crafts and yes there is always a cost associated with its use,” she said holding out her aunt’s letter for the items she was to collect. Her movement indicated this was more than a request. “Witchcraft is about as popular as talking salamanders. It is the magus, the wizards, that normally get the respect,” she said is a slightly displeased tone.
She started to walk the aisles of the shop looking at some of the books as she spoke. “I am also a practitioner, but the title of witch has to be given by people. I ride a broom, I have a black and grey cat and a pet dragon. Everyone still calls me Sarris. Not mistress or even Witch,” she said indicating this has troubled her for a while. It was a touch subject But Kamille said that the title of Witch was given by others. So she could not lead people to calling her that.
She found an old geography book written in Elvish and pulled it from the shelf. She turned to the middle where an ornate map was. Pointing at the different areas she read the old elven names then gave the current region names.
“A newer map would probably benefit you more,” she said letting him look at the book.

The shop keeper clearly was more interested in the business than the lizard at this point which had caused him a gentle sigh of relief. He didn't really have the stamina to continue the jumping and dodging he had begun. The man was slow, but he could've really picked up the pace any time. As Sarris opened the book to the map, Ijin took silent note of the shape of the continent and a few points of interest as he probably would've with any other map.
"Hmm? A map is a map. I won't take too much heed into the cities, but generally the shape of a continent doesn't change. Tell me, when you say magic has a cost here, what is it?" If it were similar to his past world, he would've already been able to use magic. It wasn't similar to his past world. He needed more information and perhaps the only way for him to obtain it was to just practice until he didn't fail anymore. The idea wasn't too perplexing. It would be the same thing he had done in the past, but here there probably wasn't a clock ticking down like there had been there.

“The change a little. There are new mountains, rivers have carved different banks, and cities move,” she said. She pointed at on city on the map. “There was a war and the place was burned by the invaders so they moved the city to about here,” she said pointing at a different spot north and west. “You would only be about two days walk off when you got to the ruins.,” she said from experience.
She closed the book gently and placed it back on the shelf.
“As to magic, there is different types…” she said trying to explain. “There are mages that use books and scrolls. Others use potions, some rings and wands,” she said. “My magic seems to be connected with the Fae. I can listen to a wizard talk about a spell, then I have to experiment with it till it works for me,” she said.
She walked towards a window speaking quieter, “I was changed into a cat by a wizard when I was young and wanted to learn how to do that. I can change myself. The first time I changed into a big cat, I ended up killing a Carabou and eating part of it. It made me a bit sick,” she added.

"Hmm I see. So for magic of higher caliber, one requires a focus of sorts? That isn't too different. Hmmm. Perhaps I will just begin experimenting with my own power trying to find out what I can manage. It probably isn't much right now, but I can certainly feel something." With the brief analysis and her explanation of the book he made more mental notes. The first place he figured he would visit was the mushroom fields. Once upon a time he had been a potion maker, though he couldn't recall anymore whether he had been good at it or abandoned it in its' entirety.
"Oh my goodness. Imagine being turned into an animal, committing the acts of said animal, and then returning human. I'm sure there couldn't possibly be anything worse." His beady lizard eyes gently laid upon her, though if he were joking while staring what could only be described as into her very fathomable existence, he didn't show it at first. Then mere moment later he would let loose a whole-hearted chuckle and smile a small, but still notable lizard smile. "Forgive me my sense of humor is a little... rusty."
"Do tell, is there some sort of.. collegiate in this world for mages? I was a magic scholar at one point in time you see and I would like to revisit that here."

“My Mistress tells me it take practice and concentration that make the biggest difference. Foci sometimes let you cast more spells or more powerful spells,” Sarris said trying to explain.
“Oh, animals are normally fairly simple to understand,” Sarris said as someone with an affinity for animals. “When you are hungry and something runs you chase it,” she said only to find out he was joking.
“Yes, there is a Mage ‘ University’,” Sarris said in a tone of a teenage who is on the outside of the cool group. “It is full of books…” she continued. “You have to be a registered student to look at them,” she added. She had been caught a couple times when her cousin was studying there.

"I see. Perhaps I will take the time to give such a place a visit, though I imagine first I will have to reaffirm my own power before I can even try to set foot in such an establishment... hmm.. Do you know where in this place I can find a close connection with magic?" Ijin gave it some thought. If he could come closer to where magic flowed naturally here, perhaps he could come to find more of an understanding of it. He began to recall various theories of magical practice he had once again been blind to. He could hear lectures being resounded through his own memories. He pulled himself from his own mind before he was swallowed whole in thought.
"Tell me... what sort of magic do you do?" He looked eager to hear her response hoping that he wouldn't offend in some way. The intention to learn from her was genuine. He would take any knowledge of this new world he could get. The time was coming where he would need to begin to seek out his own magic practice and he had no idea where to begin forming a practice from anew. It would be an interesting challenge for the lizard probably.

“Everywhere is a close connection to magic,” Sarris said as that was her experience. She had not found a place where her magic did not work. “There are places though where the veil is weak, place where one can visit the Fae,” she added. These were nexus point connected to lay lines but this was not the language she knew. For her, they were places that she could cross over to visit the fairies. Though since she had met the Winter Queen and tricked, she had not visited often.
“I could bring you to such a place. Though it is not a nice place. The Wizard that was there was using her magic in bad ways,” Sarris said worried that the Salamander might become an evil wizard. That thought showed on her face.
She scratched at her head for a moment as the shopkeeper brought the books over for her to take to her Aunt. A “I could check with some others and see if there is a better spot. For some reason, mages do not like sharing that information. My places the only thing you risk is being hunted and killed by Fairies trying to increase their power,” she said that like it was not a big deal.

Ijin's head tilted slightly to the left first, then slightly once more to the right. It were as though in each tilt he shook the thought around in his mind. The idea of being hunted by beings that were known to possess a divinity of their own within where he had once been did not appeal to his rational brain, but to the side of his brain that wanted nothing more than to come and find the answers about the magic in this place it was sweet serenade. In his mulling over the current likelihood of his own survival should he run into a being interested in partaking in his own magic power, it would probably show on his face he didn't like the odds particularly.
"Perhaps at another date. Not now. I am afraid that now, I am too likely to be... well unable to defend myself properly. I will go, do some testing of my own, give careful consideration, gain a bit more power perhaps, and then at some point perhaps you and I may meet again to go to one of these places you speak of. It has been a pleasure, but I fear there is work to be done." With that, the lizard was on his merry way. "I can't write. So perhaps we'll run into each other if it is meant to be.. what is it witches said.. hmm.. So within, as without? No that doesn't sound quite right..." Ijin continued about his path perhaps now with a more clear idea on what it is exactly he hoped to accomplish in this world.
