There are a lot of hard choices that you have to make when you are broke. That’s the position that Shaa and Ray found themselves in as they prepared for their journey across the infamous lightning fields. It was three days ago when Shaa and Ray were gambling with a particularly skeevy group of merchants in a card game called Null. They had been at it for hours when it all came down to the final maneuvers.
Well my friends said the lead merchant it seems to come down to this. The merchants looked at each other with knowing smiles. Shaa and Ray checked their cards and looked back at the merchants. Well I wouldn’t be too sure about that. Could go either way at this point.
Could be, could be he said casually. But tell you what. Let’s make this a little bit more interesting. The merchants push all of their money into the center of the table. All or nothing. Shaa didn’t like the look of this. They had been up and down all day and an all or nothing bet might be their best chance. These guys were slimy however. He felt that they may have cheated, he just couldn’t prove it. He looked over at Ray who was solid as stone. Great poker face but not helpful at the moment. Fine, let’s go. He said as he mushed their pile to the center. On the count of three, they all flipped their cards. One. Two. THREE! NULL! The slimy merchants cheered. @#$&*
Hungry and broke, the pair find a trio of men looking to cross the lightning fields. Not a great prospect even to the most seasoned adventurer. However they needed the cash and these guys had plenty of it. All they had to do was get them across. What could possibly go wrong?

Ray had agreed to join Shaa for a bit of gambling, well agreed was a strong term, it was more true to say he had never heard of Null and found himself in a game of it... While Shaa strategized and attempted to look to Ray for hints as to his hand, Ray sat stone faced due to his complete unfamiliarity with the game. When Shaa pushed their pile of money into the middle of the table Ray felt sick to his stomach, he rarely had money and this was a lot to lose.
"Fear not Seeker, this is your path, good will come of it." Qil seemed to be stifling a laugh, almost taunting Ray with the loss he was to incur.
As the game ended and they found themselves the losers Ray simply sighed in resignation, despite being a bandit for decades he'd always avoided gambling due to his ineptness at winning card games.
They now found themselves speaking to a particularly odd group of merchants with an even odder request, to cross the lightning fields...
The merchants were 3 in total. A lizard man wearing intricate clothing and carrying the smallest pack seemed to be the leader of the group. He spoke with a lilt and a hiss to his voice that gave him an air of nobility. A large half-orc seemed to be the groups heavy lifter, he carried a massive pack and his eyes seemed shifty. He kept a particularly close hold on a small pouch tied tightly to his belt. The third of the group was a small gnome girl that seemed to be a scholar of some sort. She had a bag filled with various instruments, journals, maps, and a single large book tightly wrapped in protective cloth.
"Ahem, I asssume you ladss have a great knowledge of the area. We will pay handsomely when we are ssafely delivered acrosss. Be forewarned, our cargo is... preciousss, damage to it iss unaccceptable..." The lizard man motioned towards the half-orcs backpack, his eyes were piercing and intelligent as he sized up Ray and Shaa.
"Mhmm..." The half-orc sort of growled in agreement.
"We've made a few trips through the fields, almost died each time. Key word there is almost; that's a better record than you'll find with any other guide, because there are none." Ray wasn't lying, it was a dangerous journey and he was hesitant to undertake it. Shaa seemed his usual fearless self though, that was reassuring.
As Ray spoke the halfling girl seemed to shiver slightly as her breathing quickened. She began to fidget with a belt loop nervously.

Shaa finished some last minute pre travel stretching exercises. He casually evaluated the three clients while they covered the last minute details of the trip. If it was just He and Ray on this jaunt, it would be a piece of cake. They had both made the trip so many times that occasionally Shaa would even find some of his old hoof prints on the trail. It was adding the unknown elements that made the trip tricky.
All the lizard men that Shaa had ever known were tough on the inside and outside. They were survivors and that was always helpful in a situation like this. Of course, leaving your party to be eaten by monsters while you high tailed it was also a way of surviving, so that only said so much. It was a bit disconcerting that this particular lizard seemed to be the leader. They also seemed to be hiding something. Shaa wasn’t about to pry on their meal ticket unless it became an issue.
The half ogre was a different matter all together. For some reason, maybe something in his Minotaur bones, made him dislike ogres in all their varieties. They were mean, loud, obnoxious. Basically bullies with the muscle to back it up. This one didn’t seem much different. He was here to haul stuff and look ugly. Something this one seemed to excel at on both counts. Apparently Shaa had stared at this one a bit too long and the brute took notice.
What are you looking at cow face? Are you looking to be put on the spit tonight? Shaa stood up, walked casually over and stared him in the eye. It’s pretty dangerous out there puke sniffer. I would hate for something to make you even uglier. Might scare away potential game. The half ogre curled his wicked lip and started tightening his fists. The lizard man intercedes just in time. Stand down yess? No times for thissss. The ogre relaxes at the lizard man’s command. Catch you later…meat. The half ogre walks away to check his pack. The leader, whose name was Fazal, nods at Shaa and walks away. It’s good money…it’s good money…he mumbles to himself.
Shaa walked over to the final party member, a tiny gnome girl named Teeka. She was busy wrapping up some documents and looked just about ready to leave. Hey there tea cup! Whatcha up to? Shaa said with a smirk. For the last time, is TEE KA, not tea cup and I am busy….where did I put that….here’s the…..15 no 20 ….Shaa watched as the little gnome stressed about her items. Admittedly since they met, he had gone out of his way to mess with her to get her to rlelax. He had very little success.
Ahh come on tea cup! You are just so tiny and cute. Why are you so stressed.
I AM NOT TINY! I will have you know I am 3 cms taller than the average gnome. 3!
If I had one, you would fit in my pocket.
Irrelevant! Just because you are built like a house does not make me small. You are tiny compared to an average Baloth, does that make you tiny? Shaa had to admit that it was a good point. He liked her, she was scrappy. He would take extra care to make sure she wasn’t stabbed or eaten or anything. He held his hands up in surrender.
Shaa looked over at Ray who looked ready to roll. K man, I think we are ready. Let’s head on out.

Ray had expected nothing less of Shaa than to joke about the gnome, she was almost asking to be teased with her attitude and looks. The orc's quickness to jump to confrontation led Ray to believe he could be more dangerous than he first thought, not many were willing to lash out at Shaa without fear. It seemed like it would surely be a long walk, full of pleasant conversation...
"Agreed, let's get moving, weather could change any moment..." With that Ray motioned the travelers along and took up the rear, following behind Shaa.
It was not long before they left the safety of the town and the group tightened their hoods and cloaks to cover themselves from the cold of the mountains. A small path led around the foothills of the rugged mountains. The valleys below were barren wasteland made up of cold rock formations and sparse vegetation. Few living things roamed the surrounding lands yet it was still far more alive than the Lightning Fields. After a few hours travel they reached the expansive landscape that created a massive barrier between the Dragon's Cradle and the North Western portion of Charon.
Dark clouds rolled in the sky above the massive plain, black stone streaked with white scars of past lighting strikes stretched out as far as the eye could see. The nearby mountains caused unpredictable weather and the storm could grow excited and begin bombarding the land at any moment. Luck was a large factor in surviving this journey...
"Stick close together n' keep a fast pace. Shaa knows the way, it'll keep us away from the brunt of things if it gets bad." Ray said if but there was little doubt in his mind they would end up in the midst of a storm for at least part of the journey.
"This iss... incredible... just as the legendss tell..." The lizard man looked at the land not with hesitation or fear but awe and excitement.
"One moment, I-I need to capture this pattern." The little gone, Tee Ka was it, stopped to pull several complex devices out of her pack and dropped down to assemble them. Ray almost stepped on her as his eyes focused on the sky.
"Get up, gotta keep moving, only thing you'll wind up recordin out here is our cause of death." He nudged the gnome along with his boot.
"Back off cripple, we're payin you to guide not lead." The orc stopped and turned to Ray with a snarling glare.
"Eassy, Eassy, she will be quick! It is necessary, as much so as quick travelss." His words abated the orc who simply turned and began walking again.
Ray felt anger welling up at the term cripple despite its obvious accuracy. He often forgot how his missing arm changed people's perception of him until it was brought up by rude or ignorant folk. He waited impatiently, tapping his foot against the stone and eyeing the rolling clouds that seemed to grow more wild every moment as the gnome finished her task.
Tee Ka finished setting up the device and now held it in her arms as they walked. It appeared to be a large metal rod with multiple gauges and flasks attached at various points. Different colored liquids filled each flask, some calm and still and others wildly bubbling. It was obviously either magical or alchemical, yet Ray had no idea of its purpose. These travelers were going to be more trouble than he'd expected...

Shaa looked over at Ray who seemed to be pretty ticked off. It was probably over the stupid cripple comment. Shaa had to laugh to himself knowing Ray as one of the most capable travelers out there. He could do much more with one arm than most could with two. He was half tempted to say “ screw it”, put the moronic ogre in the dirt and call it a day. But, they needed the money. And Shaa had already decided to keep the gnome super alive with her funny little books and metal rod…wait.
Ummm Tea Cup? I’m no scientist but it’s probably not the best idea to be walking around with a big metal rod in the middle of a LIGHTNING FIELD!
Teeka scoffed and rolled her eyes. Well duh! This is not just a rod. THIS is a highly sophisticated instrument. You are more likely to get hit by lightning than I am tree trunk.
Shaa was starting to get agitated. I have survived out here because I am a high Terramancer. I stay naturally grounded and can sniff out a lightning strike from like a bajillion miles away. You need to listen to me so I can tell you “ I told you so” later to your face, not your super tiny memorial.
Do you have some sort of problem with gnomes? Teeka walks up to Shaa and pokes Shaa hard in the shin. She ends up breaking a fingernail. Aghhh what in the world are you made of? She asks rubbing her sore finger.
The stuff that’s going to keep us alive. Remember that. Shaa leaves Teeka to her thoughts and broken nail, and walks over to Ray.
So far so good man. According to my true north tattoo, we are making good time but we still have a long way yet. Fazal walks up to them annoyed. Let’s not staaay lonngers than needed yess?
Yessssss Shaa said mockingly under his breath.

It was a welcome break from the tension as Shaa and Teeka argued. Shaa seemed to favor the little one, it wasn't hard to imagine why. As the three of them went she was by far the most agreeable despite her current disregard for their advice. He could only hope she was right about the instrument not attracting lightning or they'd end up with a fried gnome despite their best efforts. As Teeka strolled along eyeing the various tubes and bottles on the apparatus Ray grew curious as to it's purpose.
"What exactly does that thing do?" He tried to observe it for a moment, but could see no pattern to it's activity.
"It would be hard to explain to someone lacking extensive arcane knowledge of a very specific variety." She said quickly in a dismissive tone.
Ray dropped his shoulders in response to what he perceived as an insult, stopping for a moment and rolling his eyes before continuing the hike.
"How would ya say it to a simpleton like me, then?" He said with obvious chagrin.
"Well... umm. Storms produce magic of a sort... kinda... and this tests the strength of it among other things. We're here to see if it can -" Her explanation, growing more excited as it continued, was cut off by Fazal.
"Teeka, enough. He'ss obvioussly not following, no wasste your breath." His abruptness faded as he tried to explain away his interruption. Ray could tell they were hiding something, and it had to do with this device in some way.
Before he could press the issue further the first flash of lighting lit up the sky as a boom of thunder echoed across the landscape. The lighting struck a boulder in the distance, only visible as a silhouette against the dark sky. It was far too close to the group for Ray's comfort, the storm was brewing right atop them and would quickly grow intense. Ray uttered a silent prayer to The Wanderer for protection and guidance as they continued on at a hurried pace.

As the group walked on, the lightning strikes seemed to be getting closer. Despite their protests, the trio seemed unconcerned with the situation. Shaa walks up to Ray. This my friend is why we should have been paid up front. At least half, am I right? Just as things were getting intense, the lightning suddenly ceased. Shaa looked around confused at the sudden and unexpected change in the weather. He noticed Teeka taking some furious notes. Shaa gives Ray a sideways glance and and tilts his head slightly towards Teeka. What in the heck is that all about.
As they contemplated the meaning of the events, the lizard man walks up to them. We are done here now. Let’s move along. Shaa didn’t like this one bit. They were hired for their expertise but it felt like they were being lead around by these guys. They had a direction but, despite the lizards haste, they didn’t seem to be in a hurry to actually get there. They were just in a hurry.yeah yeah man, we can get going. Is there anything we need to know? The lizard man rolled his eyes. Like what? I don’t know. I just feel we need to be on the same page and information keeps us safe.
And some information makes you dead. Your job isss to make roooaaadddss clear. That is all you needs to know.
He was about to object when Teeka runs up to them seemly very excited. Look look, we got it. We got it!

"Husssh! Don't trouble the brutes with thisss!" The lizard pulled Teeka aside as they walked and whispered to her with clear frustration.
The little gnome's look of excitement faded to seriousness as she clutched the device closely. The lizard though, seemed to be entirely smug, something on Teeka's device had been exactly what he wanted to see. Something about the way he was acting gave an ominous feeling to Ray. These travelers were definitely more than just that.
"I don't know... they're far too cozy strollin about out here." Ray said it in a hushed voice, he was particularly skeptical of the orc and lizard. Teeka had given him no reason to assume she was anything more than an unknowing victim to whatever sort of scheme they had cooked up.
"For now, let's just take this as a lucky break, that machine seems to have effected the storm for the better, for the moment."
Ray shook his head towards the clouds, nothing good could come from messing with nature in such a grand scale. It had a way of reminding you who was really in charge. His superstitions were reinforced as thunder and lightning were seen again, not close by but in the distance. What made it strange was the intensity, each direction seemed to contain its own storm with just as much intensity as the one that had first come upon them.
"Wanderer bless us, once this storm is upon us there's not much Shaa and I can do to protect you lot. Best move, and quickly."
He picked up the pace and watched as the storm seemed to rush upon them from all directions. Shaa would be protected, he could likely even provide shelter for someone, Teeka for certain. The others still seemed entirely unconcerned with the storm, the orc even rolled his eyes at Ray's warning. Qil seemed silent, like someone who was in on a joke and waiting for the punchline. It was far from a reassuring feeling to have.

As the storm rolled in, the hair on Shaa’s arm started to raise. Ray! We have got to get out of here, NOW! Shaa had to make a quick decision. Well he wasn’t going to be winning any popularity contests today. Maybe he could force some answers. With an abrupt turn, Shaa runs over and grabs the Gnome, stuffing her under his arm. What are you doing! Unhand me you brute! No can do Tea Cup. You may be brainy but my job is to keep you from being deep fried. Shaa takes off towards a large grouping of rocks. The half orc is not pleased. Get back here you idiot! Shaa flips him off with his free hand without looking back as he continues to run towards the rocks.
As Tee Ka continues to struggle futility, Shaa arrives at the rocks, winds still blowing fiercely. He can feel the electricity gathering in the air. Let me go, let me go! I will punch you! I’ll do it! As he looks around, he sees an entrance to a cave. He signals to the rest of the group who is already running after him for some reason. Quick, head down in here and we wait out the storm. Best place to be right now. The gnome protests vehemently. I am not going into some random hole! Ignoring the pleas, Shaa hops into the entrance and down into the darkness below. See? No problem.

Thank The Wanderer for Shaa's quick thinking, if they'd waited much longer this wild storm would've given them little chance of survival. As Ray followed after Shaa at a sprint he noticed that Fazal's face had turned into a scowl with teeth showing as he chased Shaa towards the cave.
"Stop you foolish brute!! You ruinsss it!" He shouted after them. The half orc seemed just as perturbed to Ray's bewilderment.
"Seeker, this is more than you see, more than a storm..." Qil's words confirmed what Ray had expected, something unnatural was brewing above them.
As they moved to the cave the storms seemed to chase them towards them, growing more excited all the while. Now whips of lighting seemed to strike the stone closer and closer, blasting up dust and shards of stone into the air as wild winds sent the debris flying about the group.
"Wanderer save us, this is the worst I've ever seen it..." His worries abated slightly as he reach the entrance of the cave and leapt down after the group.
Taking one last look to the sky before his descent he could see a break in the clouds as some massive thing's shadow became visible for a moment. Lightning seemed to burst from the shadowed form and whether it was his imagination or not he couldn't tell, but he swore a single large eye was looking down at him from whatever it was.
"What in the hells have you lot summoned!? Is this that machine's doing??" He was not heard over a loud argument that now filled the cave as the disgruntled travelers protested this interference in whatever they were planning.

Shaa dropped Tee Ka to the floor of the darkened cavern. She lands roughly but quickly stands up kicking Shaa in the shin. Shaa barely notices as she rubs her for in pain. Seriously, what are you??? Shaa is following Ray’s gaze into the sky from the inside of the cave. He notices the large form swooping through the clouds. I’m not sure what that thing is out there, but I am glad we are in here.
Shaa walked over and grabbed Fazal by the throat. Ok enough of this nonsense. Our job was to get you guys from point A to point B, not to be target practice for that thing out there. Just what are you jerks up to? Fazal choked a bit but stayed silent.
The half ogre, a cretin going by Skadd, grabs Shaa’s arm and tries to wrench him off of Fazal’s throat. Shaa gives him a steely glare. Unless you are looking to lose that arm, you need to back off. This is your only warning. Skadd, seeing that Shaa has a firm grip, let’s go and backs off a bit into the cave, pulling out a long dagger. The situation was escalating quickly. Tension was high in the cave. Some sort of crazy lightning spewing beast outside. Something or someone was going to break soon and they were right in the middle of it.
Shaa pulls Fazal by the neck to the mouth of the cave. You see that thing out there? The lightning fields are bad enough on their own. Unless you want an up close meet and greet with your buddy out there, you will tell us what’s going on and you are going to tell us now. Skadd started towards them with his dagger but Fazal waves him off. Can’t say…but you will see. You will see it all….

This trip didn't seem like it could get much worse. Massive lightning creatures chasing them in the sky, strange magical devices that seem dubious at best, being stuck in a cave in the lightning fields. Yet, it could, now Fazal was getting esoteric and Skadd had decided to draw a blade on them... With Shaa holding Fazal by the throat it seemed as if they would end up killing the travelers instead of escorting them. The storm outside only grew more violent as time passed, lighting struck closer and closer with higher intensity and frequency.
"Shaa, best let im go, if anything the fool's just going to get himself killed." Fazal seemed slimy, but he seemed more cocky and overconfident than truly dangerous.
Ray turned then to Skadd who held a dagger towards Shaa moments earlier.
"You though! How much is this man paying you that you're willing to draw a dagger on a minotaur. You're as stupid as Teeka is short! If you draw on us again, you'll find yourself missing an arm." His eyes took on the cold harshness that had worked so well in his bandit years.
Skadd simply looked at him and gave a grunt before turning and walking further into the cave. Fazal coughed under Shaa's grip as he was held aloft. Teeka despite the pressure filled situation still fiddled with the device, her eyes seemed to light up as she took a few steps after Skadd into the cave.
"This way! It's stronger than ever!" She rushed off excitedly, oblivious to the danger of her present predicament.
Ray looked to Shaa with a face of worry and confusion. Whatever Teeka was headed towards couldn't possibly be good if she was this excited about it.

Shaa could tell he wasn’t getting anymore information out of Fazal. If they wanted answers to what was happening, they would need to venture further into the cave. It was out of the way but at least there was no lightning down here. Shaa had excellent night vision so he was easily able to catch up with Tee Ka.
Hey there little bit. Slow down! Where are you going? Tee Ka kept pressing forward , deeper into the cave. How she knew where she was going was unclear.
Despite the unexpected departure, your irritating interference may actually be our boon! Do you see this? Do you see the gamma here? We are close. Closer than we have ever been. We could never find it. Who could have even imagined that it was UNDERGROUND.
Tee Cup. Tell me. What? What is here underground?
Tee Ka looks at Shaa bewildered. Can’t you see it? Can’t you feel it? It’s here! The answer to it all! I have worked so hard. Tee Ka stops where she is and starts crying in the corridor. Shaa holds up his hands, unsure of how to handle the situation. The rest of the group finally catch up to them.
What did you do to our scientist? Shouted Fazal, running up to Tee Ka. I didn’t do anything, she just started crying for no reason.
We are close Fazal. So close! It’s here I can feel it.
From further in the cave, a tinkling sound can be heard.

Ray followed behind the group as Teeka grew emotional and the rest seemed to calm. A new focus was all they needed, though as to what could be in this cave he had no idea...
"Qil, anything you can feel in here?" He asked in his head.
"This place is old, Seeker. I remember it well..."
Should've known better...
As the group trudged down the corridor the walls of rough stone began to show signs of ware. Bits of stone were worn as by hands rubbing on the surface as they passed by. It wasn't long before they wandered unto a set of stairs, leading further down into the earth. The tinkling sound grew louder and louder as they walked along. The stairs led to a wide hall of stone, carved into intricate scenes of nature and landmarks across Charon. The Dragon's Spines occupied the largest section, with gleaming gems inlaid at their peaks and a trio of dragons circling them from above. The image flowed into the lightning fields, in the center of which sat a large sapphire, with veins stretching out from it across the plains.
Ray could make no sense of it, but Teeka and Fazal couldn't get enough of it. They each stared in awe before looking to one another with faces of pride. Teeka again broke into tears, placing her hand over the gem.
"It's really here..." Teeka said through sobs.
"I'll finally have it..." Fazal spoke in a worryingly sinister voice.
A set of large doors stood between them and.... whatever they were after. Ray, fed up with the strange travelers, simply moved to one door and motioned to Shaa to get the other. It was time to find out what all the fuss was about.

Finally they were going to get to the heart of…whatever the heck was happening here. Shaa knew that Ray felt the same way. Looking at all of the intricate designs in the wall, Shaa could tell that this was no ordinary cave. He even noticed a little carved Minotaur. It wasn’t important at all but Shaa thought it was pretty cool.
Ray moves over to the large set of doors and motion Shaa to join him. Shaa walks up to the door on the opposite side of Ray and puts his hands into place. One, two…with a large push, the doors slowly swing inside. A large breeze wafts into the cabin. The air smells salty like the ocean. There is definitely a bit more moisture in the atmosphere as well. Shaa steps into the dark of the chamber. As he walks forward he can now hear the water splashing down and it was getting louder.
Shaa has taken the lead as the rest of the group is following behind him until…I knew it, I knew it! It’s here, it’s here! With her device in front of her, Tee Ka runs past Shaa and around a dark corner. Shaa jogs to catch up to her. Don’t go running off on you own. Shaa rounded a corner and stopped in his tracks. He could not believe what he was seeing. In the chamber was an absolutely massive chamber, going several hundreds of feet down. But that was not the amazing part. The amazing part was the gargantuan crystal tree that filled the entire chamber. All around the chamber, waterfalls were falling down, disappearing into the darkness below. What in the world are we looking at.
As the rest of the party entered the chamber, Tee Ka ran back to Fazal. It’s more beautiful than I could even imagine.
